1:17

and welcome to season 11 of the

1:19

Travel Diaries podcast. I'm your host Holly

1:22

Rubinstein and here each week I'll be

1:24

speaking to a very special guest or

1:26

in this case, very special guests about

1:28

the different chapters of their life's travel

1:31

diaries from the first place they fell

1:33

in love with and the place where

1:35

they learned the most about themselves to

1:37

their hidden gem and what's at the

1:39

top of their travel bucket list. We'll

1:42

be uncovering their adventures around the world

1:44

and the travel experiences and destinations that

1:46

have shaped their lives. Oh, well, it's

1:48

great to be back for a brand

1:50

new season. I'll be joining you for the

1:53

next few months every Tuesday with a weekly

1:55

dose of guaranteed wanderlust. Make sure you hit

1:57

2:00

the show on right now. It's free and it means

2:02

that you'll get each episode every week by doing

2:04

so. You're also really helping to support

2:07

the podcast. It has been

2:09

so great hearing about the places

2:11

that you've been travelling to since

2:13

we last spoke. Thank you for

2:15

all your messages on Instagram and

2:17

Twitter and TikTok. Speaking of Instagram

2:20

actually, I am running my biggest

2:22

competition yet this week over on

2:24

my account at Holly Rubenstein, giving

2:26

you the chance to win a

2:28

stay in a three-bedroom apartment at

2:31

one of my all-time favourite places

2:33

to visit in the UK. The

2:35

Lakes By You in the beautiful

2:37

Cotswolds. I'm

2:39

so excited about this. You've got a week to

2:41

enter. Make sure you check it out for the

2:44

chance to win a trip of a lifetime. I've

2:46

been away as well. At the start of the

2:48

year I was really grateful

2:50

to tick a destination off my bucket

2:52

list and headed to the

2:54

Dolomites, which is a destination that's come

2:56

up loads on the podcast. I remember

2:58

Michael Palin picking it as one of

3:01

his favourite places and although I'm not

3:03

a skier, my husband Alex says, I

3:05

knew that I would want

3:07

to see the spectacular scenery and

3:09

be in the beautiful mountain environment

3:11

and it completely lived up

3:14

to my expectations and more and proved to

3:16

me that you really don't actually need to

3:18

be a skier to have an incredible holiday

3:20

in the mountains. We stayed in

3:22

two different areas. The second I'll be

3:24

talking about on next week's Family Travel

3:26

Special of the podcast because it was

3:29

a hotel that was designed specifically with

3:31

children in mind. But this week I

3:33

just wanted to tell you a little

3:35

bit about my experience staying in Val

3:38

Gardina on the Alpe di Smithi, one

3:40

of Europe's most extensive high altitude plateaus.

3:43

Absolutely spectacular part of the Dolomites.

3:45

We stayed at a hotel called

3:47

Como Alpina Dolomites, which was

3:49

quickly anointed into the all-time

3:52

favorites list. I mean architecturally

3:54

as a first impression it

3:56

is spectacular. Give it a Google

3:58

Como Alpina Dolomites. It's this

4:01

circular modernist building which is enveloped

4:03

in these like really dramatic wooden

4:05

arches which mimic the mountains that

4:07

surround it and it's extremely

4:10

striking like something from a Bond movie. It

4:12

took ski and ski out to a whole

4:14

new level. Our room was directly next to

4:16

a piece and I would

4:18

literally be like in the bath or sitting

4:21

on the bed and see these skiers whizzing

4:24

past the window including

4:26

my husband who said that the skiing was some

4:28

of the best he'd ever experienced by the way

4:30

because it's part of the Dolomite super ski area.

4:32

But yeah, it was such a thrill to see

4:34

all these skiers go by and for

4:36

me it was really one of those

4:39

rare gem hotels that felt truly spoiling

4:41

and chic, stunning interiors, a vast spa

4:43

you know for many Komo, the Komo

4:45

brand there are other Komo hotels is

4:47

first and foremost a spa brand and

4:50

it was really big here and there

4:52

was an indoor outdoor pool looking over

4:54

the mountains. I loved being in that

4:56

like toasty warm water surrounded by snow,

4:58

but while being all of those things

5:01

it also really catered to families and

5:03

there was a lovely kids club they

5:05

provided all the gear that you'd need. There was

5:07

a playground there with one of the best fees

5:10

ever and an adorable ski school just

5:12

outside for tiny. So it's one

5:14

to add to your travel bucket

5:16

list for sure and to me

5:18

certainly I've also had lots of people

5:20

come on the podcast and talk about the Alps in

5:22

the summer and it would be a

5:24

place that I would love to go back to for

5:27

that because it is part of that big

5:29

plateau, that big meadowy plateau that's so high.

5:31

The hiking and the biking and the scenery

5:33

there would just be amazing.

5:35

So thank you Komo, our peanut Dolomites

5:37

for having us. It was a very

5:40

memorable stay. Okay, let's get on to

5:42

today's guests. Kicking off the season, we

5:44

are joined by a dazzling

5:46

duo who are set to waltz

5:48

their way into your hearts. Stars

5:50

have strictly come dancing and heading

5:52

into a second season of their

5:55

much-loved travel show Anton and Giovanni's

5:57

Adventures. It is none other than

5:59

Anton Dubéc. and Giovanni Panice.

6:01

I spoke to Anton and Gio

6:03

in London a couple of weeks

6:06

ago in person at a dance

6:08

studio which was

6:10

like something out of fame. It was

6:12

like all these sprawling little rooms filled

6:15

with people singing and whooping and there

6:17

was like music blaring from every corner.

6:20

So if you hear the odd vocal warm up

6:22

or some little echoey bits in the

6:24

background, that is why it wasn't

6:27

my normal setup. But it was

6:29

so fun to meet them both.

6:31

You'll instantly get a feel for

6:33

their cheeky energy and the banter

6:35

they have between them. Their friendship

6:37

is just so visible and lovely.

6:40

I've watched Strictly since season one. I don't know

6:42

about you guys, but can you believe that was 20

6:44

years ago? 20 years crazy.

6:47

And Anton's been a part of the show

6:49

since the very beginning. He's a seasoned dance

6:51

floor veteran first as a contestant and now

6:53

as a judge over the last few years.

6:57

And then Giovanni entered with a

6:59

bang back in 2015, reaching the

7:01

final three times and then winning

7:03

with EastEnders actress Rose Ailing Ellis

7:05

in 2021. Of course that really

7:08

memorable season and from Strictly, you

7:10

know, these guys are absolutely nonstop with

7:12

their own individual tours and joint tours,

7:14

Anton's writing books and of course Strictly

7:17

tours as well. And because there are

7:19

two of them, you know, I don't

7:21

normally do paired interviews. Actually,

7:24

the only other one I've done was

7:26

with the lovely Harry Biker's. So sad

7:28

about Dave Myers passing. What a lovely

7:30

man. Such an infectious energy and one

7:33

of my favorite episodes. But

7:35

because there were two of them today, I

7:37

didn't cover all seven chapters. I managed to

7:39

squeeze in six. So we'll have to find

7:42

a time to do a sequel sometime and

7:44

find out the first place that they fell

7:46

in love with Zed. But

7:48

with Anton being, you know, half

7:50

Spanish and half Hungarian and Giovanni

7:52

being Italian growing up in Sicily, travel

7:55

has obviously played a really important part of both

7:57

of their lives. And I really hope you have

7:59

a lovely day. with us on

8:01

this one. Let's use my seatbelts

8:04

and get started. Giofaro

8:10

Benice, Anton de

8:12

Bech. Welcome to the Travel Diaries

8:14

podcast, it is amazing to see

8:16

you both, how are you? Very

8:19

very, we're delighted to be

8:22

here because we were talking the other

8:24

day when we have a coffee and

8:27

I said to you what do you want to

8:29

do? And they say a podcast. Which one I

8:31

said and you said to me I want to

8:33

do the Travel Diaries and

8:36

I said we've never been asked and you went I'm

8:38

so disappointed. We're delighted to be here, thank you for

8:40

having us. Thank you my biggest

8:43

fan clearly. Obviously. We've

8:45

got a lot to cover today guys because we're going

8:47

through the six chapters of

8:50

your life travel diaries but

8:52

because you've travelled together a

8:54

lot, some of them are going to be individual and some of them

8:57

are going to be your joint chapters.

9:00

So I'm really excited

9:02

to uncover some of the destinations that

9:04

have shaped your life. Let's

9:07

kick off with chapter one. We're going to

9:09

picture, it's a rainy downside, we're going

9:11

to probably picture some lovely sunny lines.

9:13

Just for a change. We'll kick

9:16

off with you. Go ahead. Chapter

9:18

one is your earliest childhood travel

9:20

memory. What would that be? Oh

9:22

I remember when, well travel, we

9:25

say travel but it's very very

9:28

close to where I live. Actually

9:31

I told you this story with the women

9:33

in Sicily, Shaka. I used to remember all

9:35

gone holidays with my parents for the carnival

9:37

over there. It used to be a massive

9:39

massive deal for us going to the carnival

9:41

in Shaka which is only an hour and

9:43

a half really from where I live. But

9:46

I remember the whole family getting

9:48

together and trying to

9:50

find a costume to wear

9:52

for carnival and preparing was

9:56

a massive massive deal for us. And

9:58

you travelled a lot around the world. around Sicily,

10:00

obviously your home island, and then

10:02

you took Anton there. What

10:05

was it like taking your best pal over

10:07

to your homeland? Potentially the best thing I've

10:09

ever done in my entire life. Oh, love.

10:12

I mean, what's the success in every single

10:14

possible way? I showed my best friend when

10:16

I was born and raised and

10:19

had fun together and got paid for

10:21

it. So... He's a

10:23

better... All better. I

10:26

mean, Sicily's had a bit of a tourism renaissance,

10:28

and it has in it because of White Lotus,

10:31

the White Lotus effect, and everyone is flocking

10:33

there. Oh, is it? What are

10:35

you talking about? Yeah, and you guys, of course. I'm

10:37

lotus. So what's your favorite

10:39

destination within Sicily, would you say?

10:41

I do like, obviously, when I'm from Palermo,

10:43

but also like Tormino. Tormino was nice. We

10:46

call it the Central Bay of Sicily. There's

10:48

everything in there, literally. Everything,

10:50

it's a very, very remarkable place

10:52

if you want to go on

10:55

holidays, because the

10:57

beach is beautiful, because there's

10:59

a lot of luxury and the views, well,

11:01

the views when you're there was distracted because

11:03

I was looking at you all the way.

11:05

Oh, I'm blind. Yeah, I'm only human. But

11:07

I think Tormino and Palermo was the best

11:10

place to go in Sicily. So you do these kind of

11:12

road trips around the island with your family? Oh,

11:15

yeah, kind of. You know,

11:17

it's very small, Sicily. It's

11:19

very small. So once you've

11:21

done two or three times, you don't repeat

11:23

yourself. Yeah. So we were trying

11:26

to go a bit north with the family. By

11:29

now, you see, now I'm getting a bit older. I

11:31

want to go back to the roots myself. And I

11:33

realized that actually Sicily is a beautiful part of the

11:35

world. So we'll have to explore a bit more of

11:37

that. And how about you, Anton? Because

11:40

I know that kind of long, long drive,

11:42

long road trips also featured in your summer

11:44

holidays. Well, when we were young,

11:46

we used to summer. Sounds very glamorous,

11:48

doesn't it? Because my mum's

11:50

Spanish, my father's Hungarian. We would go back to the

11:52

family. So

11:56

we would, but we would drive. So

11:58

we would drive for two days across. Europe,

12:00

so we'd get the ferry over to

12:02

Calais and then in the car and

12:05

off we'd go, we'd drive either to

12:07

northern Spain in Galicia or across to,

12:09

down to Hungary. So that was

12:12

our summers. Yeah, that's a long

12:14

way to go. Long way. And

12:16

you and your siblings, like, all packed from the back of the car.

12:18

Yeah, but it was my sister and I at the time. But,

12:21

you know, old cars, like, you

12:23

know, no air conditioning. No seat belts, no air conditioning, wind

12:28

the window down. So, and we'd sleep

12:30

in the car and no luck from

12:32

the hotels and stuff. Sleep in the

12:34

car. Would you look forward to it?

12:36

Not massively. No, it'd be nice when

12:39

you got there. It seems

12:41

exciting now. It seems sort of romantic

12:43

now that you jump in a car

12:45

and you drive. I mean, imagine just

12:47

getting in the car and driving from

12:50

here to Spain or to South France

12:52

in a nice open-top, something nice.

12:54

No, in a voxel Viva. Some of the

12:56

romance is lost. And

12:59

did you prefer going to Hungary or

13:01

Spain? Well, you know, interesting.

13:03

Spain was better because we

13:05

had the seaside. We had

13:07

late Baraton in Hungary, but

13:09

that wasn't where we'd have to, that

13:12

wasn't where my father came from. He came

13:14

from the countryside. So it was

13:16

very rural. Both of them were very

13:18

rural parts of the world. But in

13:21

Spain, very different as well.

13:23

Oh man. But the Spain

13:25

was closer to the seaside. So we would go to

13:28

the seaside, spend a lot of time at the seaside.

13:30

Lovely. And then this time

13:33

that you spent in Spain

13:35

obviously inspired your forthcoming series.

13:38

All set in Spain. So it's a

13:40

good opportunity for you to tell

13:42

us a little bit about what we can expect.

13:44

Oh, you can expect anything and more from

13:46

that really. I mean, the most

13:49

important thing was the fact that

13:51

we were together. But what we

13:53

explore in Spain was not just

13:55

the beautiful places and the weather,

13:57

which was incredible, but food. Food

13:59

does well. well. And

14:01

we had also sort of fun

14:04

activities together, water

14:06

sports. Water sports. We're great at water

14:09

sports. You are not actually great at

14:11

water sports. I say great. I

14:13

respect you both to be because you're very nimble. Well,

14:15

no, we are nimble. And

14:17

we try once, I tell you what, we try

14:19

and see, we try to put a board. Paddle

14:21

boarding. And that one didn't go

14:23

very well. So, so clever people. I

14:26

don't know what paddle boarding is like to

14:28

go through because I never managed to get

14:30

on a board or paddle. Which you might

14:32

think would be fine for us because we

14:34

are dancers. Yeah, it doesn't work that way

14:36

too. No, it didn't. So we took a

14:38

lot of people, we tried putting a boarding

14:40

in Sicily, it didn't work. So we tried

14:42

to do again something else in Spain. And

14:44

that one didn't work either. Oh, did you do this

14:46

one? We did attempt

14:48

to surf. Surfing. Surfing. How

14:50

do you try before? No.

14:54

No, and it didn't go well. Where

14:57

in Spain were you trying that? Not that. Where

14:59

have you gone? North, north. In Balbac. In

15:01

Balbac, which is known for its surf. Yeah. So you

15:03

were going to go like one of the surfing capitals

15:05

of Europe. And one of the nudist

15:07

beaches of Europe. Yeah, surfing on

15:09

the nudist beach? Yeah. That's what we did. Well, we

15:11

surfed. That's why you didn't stay on the boards

15:14

too long because you toppled off. Too

15:17

much distraction. Who

15:20

stayed on longest? Well, I don't know because neither

15:22

of us got on it. Yeah,

15:25

let's really say. It's it

15:31

was super. It's a lovely.

15:33

Do you know what was really fun about Spain

15:35

and doing the trip in Spain? Was

15:38

that we did. We managed

15:41

to get up to where my mum comes

15:43

from and that part of in Galicia and

15:45

had a look around there and my family

15:47

came over and my mum came over and

15:49

we took Giovanni across there and showed all

15:51

that sort of stuff, which was lovely. But

15:55

the other interesting part was

15:57

that we went and visited sort of a lot

15:59

of undiscovered scene

16:01

that you know the touristy bit we

16:04

didn't really do well apart from one touristy bit we

16:07

started in Sevilla which is a

16:10

beautiful city so that

16:12

was a lot of fun and then we went across and

16:15

we went to Rhonda Rhonda and Granada

16:17

Madrid and we went up to Madrid

16:20

and up to Bilbao so that's the

16:22

best view. It was a really comprehensive

16:24

tour anyway. As we were

16:26

going across to Rhonda and Granada

16:29

we dipped into another sunny

16:33

part by the sea.

16:38

It was an experience.

16:41

It was less Spanish than my

16:43

mother. I would say I renamed

16:45

it the Dubai of Spain. The

16:49

Dubai of Spain. L'opéndant,

16:51

my water. Do you have

16:53

any full English's while you were there? Oh,

16:56

youicking it back more than bal revenues for?

16:58

We did have a lot of English. And

17:05

Galicia where your mom is from, yeah tell me a bit about that. It's

17:09

very very green, very leafy.

17:11

themefery very sunny sort

17:13

of quite it's

17:17

very lush. The food is incredible up

17:19

there, the produce is much. I think

17:22

it's the sort of number

17:24

one part of Spain for food and

17:26

produce. Yeah, actually we discovered that we

17:28

discovered the father we start from the south

17:30

and the food was getting better and

17:32

better. Better than the north of Spain.

17:35

In Spain, yeah. And

17:37

then turns back to Spain. It's

17:39

just the best. Do you know

17:42

the number one restaurant in the

17:44

world from a period of for

17:48

about 10 years, for 10 years,

17:50

so 8 out of 10 11

17:52

years the number one restaurant in

17:54

the world was El Bulli in Spain. Just

17:56

north of Bazaa, so towards and north of

17:59

Spain. It shut

18:01

down, it's become a food sort of school

18:03

if you like. But it was the number

18:05

one of all the cuisines around the world.

18:07

Yeah. And when it

18:09

wasn't that, El Soler de Canoroca in

18:11

Girona was... Girona, yeah, Girona, Spina

18:14

Zor. She said

18:16

that fantastically. I tried to

18:18

employ my Spanish A-level accent.

18:20

Tugo de Española? Yeah. Ooo,

18:23

porquito. Eso porquito. Eso

18:25

porquito. Eso porquito. Chavita. C'est

18:28

la ronde. Hey, gracias. And that's about it.

18:30

La ronde. Well, actually speaking about being learned,

18:32

Chapter 2 is the place where you guys

18:35

learnt the

18:42

most about yourselves. I want to ask

18:44

this separately. This place will be

18:47

back to my adolescence. Are we talking about that

18:49

or something else? Whenever

18:51

you had a profound moment. Well, I've had a

18:53

lot of that. Profound moment for me

18:55

was when I moved to Bologna actually. When I was

18:57

14 years old and I left home and

18:59

I went to Bologna to carry on dancing.

19:02

And that was the only time when I was living by myself. So

19:05

when you're a little teenager really and

19:08

you get to live by yourself is

19:11

the time when you really grow

19:13

up and get to learn more about yourself, you

19:15

get to learn about what you need in life.

19:18

So that was my profound moment as you

19:20

called it. Yeah.

19:22

I'd read that you left home at 14.

19:24

I mean, it's incredibly young. What

19:28

gave you that kind of incentive, that determination? I

19:30

mean, obviously I know it was to move to

19:32

dance. But

19:34

how did you have that certainty that you knew

19:36

that that was the right thing to do? And

19:39

Sicily is a very small island. So there's not much

19:41

going on there. And I wanted

19:44

to carry on to follow my dreams and

19:47

look around and see what Sicily

19:49

can give me, I think, opportunities.

19:52

And we're not much there. So

19:55

I just spoke to the family. Mum and

19:57

Dad always been supportive and they were supporting

19:59

me financially. and we all took the decision and the

20:02

third happened. It was 20 years

20:04

ago. When did you move to,

20:06

you went from Sicily to Bologna?

20:09

Yes. And who did you stay with in Bologna? On

20:11

my own. Did you stay with your own?

20:13

And you had a partner or did you? No, no, no, just on my own.

20:16

As a parent, I mean that seems like a good

20:18

thing. I can't imagine it, no, as a parent

20:20

I can't imagine it. I think about my, I think

20:22

about me at 14, I could not. I only just

20:24

started dancing. You say that, but if George

20:27

or Raua, what's her year? Dad,

20:29

I really want to do this. You will be

20:31

the first person who will support your kids. You

20:35

would be the person who would say, right,

20:38

okay, let's talk about this and we're

20:41

going to find a solution. Because if it's that way you

20:43

want to do, you personally, knowing

20:45

you, you will be the person who

20:47

really will make all of this

20:49

happen. So it's a difficult thought, but you will

20:51

be the person who will make that. It's an

20:53

extraordinary thing. I think about me. And it was the

20:55

right thing to do? It was the right thing to do? Oh, wait a minute.

20:58

Look at him now. Exactly, like you've done no

21:00

regrets. No regrets, actually I was very,

21:02

very, very lucky. I was very lucky to

21:04

take the decision really, to be honest. And

21:07

I was grateful to my parents to give me

21:09

the opportunity and the chance to... That independence. Very

21:11

bright. Yeah, that independence. And am I

21:13

right in thinking, Gio, that you used

21:16

to watch the original Strictly Come Dancing, Come

21:18

Dancing, and that kind of was what inspired

21:20

you to get to dance with me? The

21:22

old Come Dancing. We're in the lovely Angela

21:24

Reepan, yeah. Oh, yeah. I used to watch

21:26

all of it, and I did love the

21:29

sequence and the dance and the chemistry between the boys

21:31

and the girls. And I was like, oh, this

21:33

is like what I have to do for the rest of my life. And,

21:36

you know, and let's say... I never wanted to

21:38

be under control. Never go back. Yeah.

21:40

Never go back. Yeah, I mean, how then incredible

21:43

was it then when you kind of made it? It

21:45

was a proud moment, obviously.

21:48

But you say you made it, but I

21:50

don't think I still have made it anything.

21:52

You know, you live life every day as

21:54

you come. And,

21:58

you know, for me, it's not... live my

22:00

life not having regrets because you

22:02

know I always say the regrets that we have

22:04

today are the chances that we never took and

22:07

that's true it's true it really is true I

22:12

had today with the chance

22:14

I never took in Jockin

22:17

Zoo that's the

22:19

name of my show wow

22:23

jump about a strap line for

22:25

a show but it's

22:28

true we all should live our life

22:30

at full yes you know and take

22:32

chances and opportunities and that

22:34

chance of opportunity come to me and I took it you

22:36

never want to be lying

22:38

on your deathbed at the end of your life and somebody

22:40

says to you do you wish you'd tried a bit harder

22:43

you want to be able to go no no I couldn't

22:45

have tried any harder I tried my best yeah

22:47

all the time yeah there was no I

22:50

was redlining it every single minute of the day

22:52

there is no and to be

22:54

fair trying to get this interview in the diary

22:56

I know that you guys are doing that because

22:58

you are non-stop at the moment well that sounds

23:01

false to be honest because I always look after

23:03

him actually look at him

23:05

I say Romordo and he doesn't have a day

23:07

off so I said I have to be like

23:09

him because remember the regrets they have today are

23:12

the chances that we never took never took

23:15

and that's exactly how I

23:17

feel with that in mind then Adron, what's

23:20

the place where you learnt the most about yourself would

23:22

you say I had

23:24

a profound moment, well profound two strong words

23:27

really but I did have a moment in

23:29

Paris and

23:33

I was doing a competition in Paris

23:35

we did the French

23:37

national championship and

23:39

we did horribly like

23:44

awfully right down about they

23:46

did a thing called a repashage so what happens is you

23:49

do the first round of competition, it works like you do

23:51

a first round of competition and

23:53

then a bunch of people get through so they

23:55

don't have to dance again and then

23:57

they select a number of people have to dance

23:59

again in order to sort of

24:01

top up the ones that got through. So

24:04

if there were, let's

24:06

say there were 20 people, they

24:08

got 15 through, and then the rest

24:10

had to dance again for those five

24:12

extra places. They call it a

24:14

repashage. I didn't think for a

24:16

second that I wouldn't be all the way through into

24:19

the next round, and then onwards into the round after

24:21

that, and on we go to the final. I

24:23

end up in the repashage with my partner. With

24:26

Aaron? I think it

24:28

might have been with Aaron. In the early days of

24:30

Aaron. I was, I didn't know what to do. I

24:32

was so stunned by this. It

24:34

felt like a career-ending moment.

24:37

You know, I'm not sure it was him. I've

24:39

been before Aaron. But things weren't going to go

24:42

well. It wasn't, the doubt of the

24:44

task, terribly, the results have been awful. It's all

24:46

terrible. I didn't have a penny

24:48

to my name. I'm in Paris,

24:50

I'm lying in a bath. This bath

24:53

is the length of this table. It's

24:55

not even a full-sized bath. I'm lying

24:57

in this bath. My legs are up

24:59

against the wall. I'm having the,

25:02

and even the bath is too small for me.

25:04

This is a metaphor for

25:06

my life. It's all

25:08

horrendous. This is a disaster.

25:11

Everything was awful. And

25:13

I had this conversation myself. I went, what

25:16

is it that I'm wasting my life? This is a waste of time. I

25:18

should give this up. I said these two

25:21

voices, one of the angels on my shoulders. And

25:24

this bath. And even the water wasn't

25:26

that hot. And

25:28

I said, well, you're wasting your time. We give this

25:30

up. And then the other side went, oh, Robin, you're

25:32

gonna give it up. What are you gonna do? What

25:34

else can you do? Can I do anything

25:36

else? And I can't carry on doing

25:38

this. It's wasting my time. This is a disaster. I mean, I'm

25:41

in a repisharge. And I was like, well, you've left it a

25:43

bit late to start changing your mind now, haven't you? And

25:45

I'm having this huge internal

25:49

conflict in this half bath

25:51

of my legs up the wall with

25:54

the water going cold. And it was like a

25:56

moment where I had to either go, okay,

25:58

well, listen. give it up or

26:03

kind of harder. Yeah, you

26:05

don't have to work this out and Then

26:08

we then I came back to the UK

26:10

and thought sort of started again with

26:12

a renewed drive No, we just a route

26:15

would just I just change everything and went

26:17

okay We didn't have to do something different

26:19

here and I changed my I'm not even

26:21

sure I didn't change my partner but I changed my teachers and

26:24

Stuff, you know and then if they could see me

26:27

now So

26:30

everything changed, you know, and that was a big thing.

26:32

Yeah, that was my but it I don't know if

26:34

that was a profound moment But it was a moment

26:36

where I thought I went okay, which is quite interesting

26:38

It is absolutely and and I know you

26:41

don't like to especially dwell on the past

26:43

and I'm not going to either but you

26:45

have in terms of personal growth you have

26:47

spoken about you know having a Difficult relationship

26:49

with your father growing up and that

26:52

he had a very difficult relationship with

26:54

alcohol himself I don't think he had

26:56

a difficult relationship with alcohol. I think you had a

26:58

perfectly okay relationship It

27:00

was the relationship of him with alcohol

27:02

and me that caused the problem. Yeah,

27:04

sorry you're right But

27:09

what I did think was really Meaningful

27:12

was you you said in another interview that

27:14

it spurred you on to change your name

27:17

from Tony de Becqueville up on a council

27:19

estate to Anton de Becqueville the

27:21

showman and That

27:24

I thought well, I think that's all quite profound, but

27:26

I don't know I Okay,

27:29

that's fine. I'll move on one

27:31

thing I learned about you both during the

27:34

Sicily show was that

27:36

you are both amazing singers

27:43

We don't like to pray

27:45

so what I want to know is when is that

27:47

the joint album coming? We

27:51

don't thought about that. I think you for giving us an

27:53

idea. Yeah, please must see we come.

27:55

Yeah If

27:58

I could get a thank you in the in the

28:00

album. Yeah, and the album.

28:06

Watch this piece. We

28:09

should do that actually. Christmas, Christmas. I think we're going

28:11

Christmas cracker. Okay. Fantastic.

28:13

You've heard it here first. Anton and

28:15

Geo's Christmas cracker album. Run the fire.

28:17

Any favorite, any favorite tracks that you

28:19

dip into immediately? What are your favorites?

28:21

It was Ave Maria, wasn't it, that

28:23

we heard? It's not very Christmasy. Oh, it is

28:25

actually. It's not too bad. It's not too bad. Yeah, just

28:27

a bit of that. Yeah, I think we can do that.

28:29

Go on. No, not now. No, of course.

28:32

No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.

28:34

I'm not going to move up. But

28:36

I think that when you say amazing

28:38

singers, it's something that I need. The

28:40

thing is, I never had the confidence

28:44

to be on stage anything, but then we

28:46

did the shot together, me and him,

28:48

called him and me four years ago. Yeah.

28:50

Which was nominated for Olivia awards

28:53

as well. Just put

28:55

on that. Just say. Yeah. And

28:57

she's the one that said to me, give me the courage

29:00

to do it because you heard me sing in one. So

29:02

I was like, actually, it's good, it's good. And I was

29:04

like, no, come on. It's horrible. And

29:06

it's like, no, come on, come on. So

29:09

yeah. And now look at me. I'm about

29:11

to record an album, apparently. And

29:17

you're a pianist. Give me the dance.

29:19

Yeah. And a drummer as well.

29:21

And a drummer. Yeah. So you're going

29:23

to do all the music for the album as well.

29:25

Forget about the dancing. What instruments do you play, Anton?

29:28

Oh, I do the spoons. Very

29:31

good with the spoons. And the

29:33

triangle. Triangle, yes. I try on

29:35

the spoons. Rarely at the same time, though.

29:39

So you'll do the backing band. Yes, I do

29:41

the tracks. And then you can have

29:43

Dave Arch doing the recs? No,

29:46

we don't. No, we don't need any more. The guy's spoon.

29:49

The guy's triangle. That's what it is. Okay. So

29:53

we'll be on guys to chapter three. And

29:55

that is your all time favorite

29:57

destination. Oh. That's kind of the only thing

29:59

I can do. It be nice to find out

30:02

what he as a pair collectively maybe

30:04

found fence your respective trips together bad

30:06

lifted out individually also as. A good

30:08

good closer than been alive and of him

30:11

so much bus or would save time and

30:13

was a nice place to go more. Daves

30:15

was nice as well. threat to the borders

30:17

or this. I've never been to the movies

30:20

and are saying this because we should go

30:22

into animals do whatever we go together. Ladies

30:24

as so that series what's your save our

30:26

eyes on reserve said or job clutched of

30:29

butter some of them with this is it

30:31

I would pay the see in the budget

30:33

such. As

30:36

as as do others such as far as. A. Joke

30:38

a bomb? or do you have a sort of of

30:40

a bomb? Have a pay as well. Not the normal

30:42

ones, the ones that fit on of a bomb. Techs

30:46

I was above the tennis for where you. Thought

30:49

that lots of whether the things as hold

30:51

you. Feel one is

30:53

30:55

one of the was normal. But his mother's

30:57

30:59

31:01

31:06

31:08

hello? And

31:14

seventy get a start employing been canopy. So what?

31:16

I like fighting by a man with. A dirty

31:18

bombs or advice if you get his

31:20

ass signal mists oh geez for smash

31:22

your bottom is most of the day

31:24

and. What about you and some what's your all

31:26

time favorite essays and. Beaches ah that's

31:28

of the season isn't Sicily was

31:31

gorgeous. Tell me there is very

31:33

nice. I. Did lotto

31:35

mean upon them as nice

31:37

Poland says. And home. as

31:40

a fetters of interest from of the

31:43

boy and. His

31:46

mistress restaurants now I'm. on

31:49

it or do i did erm with

31:51

did mama we drove down from san

31:53

francisco all the way down to as

31:55

i saw last that but i'm the

31:57

the a one they call it a

31:59

big surf, what have they called it?

32:01

The Highway 101. That's the

32:03

chaffy. And we went to Carmel.

32:06

Have you been to Carmel? I have.

32:08

From the Monterey Peninsula. Yeah, beautiful Carmel

32:10

Valley. That's very beautiful. Now we like

32:12

that. That's such an epic road trip,

32:14

isn't it? It is, it's fun, it's

32:16

nice. Yeah, it's nice. Then we went

32:18

up to the Yosemite and all that

32:20

sort of thing. But do you know

32:22

a city I love? I love London.

32:25

I have to be honest with you. I do love

32:27

London. Oh, yeah. I love London.

32:30

Paris is nice, Rome is nice. But we

32:32

can't go all around the world. Wow. Well,

32:36

I'd love to know also though, on

32:38

this forthcoming series, where was your kind

32:40

of collective favorite Spanish destination you guys

32:42

went to? I think Bellatorme, Bellatorme

32:45

is how I went. Do you remember when you

32:47

were in the house? If we have to suggest to people where to

32:50

go, we'd definitely recommend it. So, I include all

32:52

the destinations mentioned today in the episode show

32:54

notes. So, if anyone wants to buy themselves

32:56

of your recommendations, I will make sure I

32:58

recommend it. Whereas Sevilla is

33:00

nice. Sevilla. Sevilla. Sevilla.

33:03

Sevilla. Yeah, which is

33:05

Seville. It's Seville. Yeah.

33:08

And we'd be debating if the people...

33:10

Bill Bowyer. It's called civilian. We

33:12

haven't figured out yet. Because if

33:14

you live in Seville, you're basically going to

33:16

Seville. Seville, I think that's probably the case. Yeah.

33:19

What if you were Bill Bowyer? Bill Bowyer. Bill

33:22

Bowyer. But not Sean. Yeah. Did

33:25

you like Bill Bowyer? Sean Sebastian. Go there. Sean

33:27

Sebastian is beautiful. Rhonda was nice. Rhonda.

33:30

Rhonda Madrid. Well, it's all right.

33:32

It's a bit city. Yeah, well. Well,

33:34

they're all city. But for us, for both of

33:36

us. That bridge in Rhonda. The Rhonda Bridge. The

33:38

Rhonda Bridge. Yeah, I have. The Rhonda

33:40

Bridge. We attempt to take a selfie in that bridge.

33:43

Yeah. Went very well, I thought. Like a picture

33:45

of a hat. Yeah. You thought that...

33:47

Your base in the life, that's good. Yes.

33:50

Oh yes, the Rickety Bridge. The one that you were

33:52

supposed to walk along with the mountains. You like that.

33:54

You love to be a hight. When I talk about

33:56

heights. It's not happening. But I think both of us,

33:59

we... We just had

34:01

a better dormitore for it. That's

34:03

right, that's what you're going back to. Got it. Hey

34:09

Dave. Yeah Randy? Since we founded Bombas,

34:11

we've always said our socks, underwear and

34:59

And what a great partnership. If you're

35:01

a long time listener of The Travel Diaries,

35:03

you probably know that we love to

35:05

put our home on Airbnb when we're

35:07

travelling. Like last autumn when we took the

35:09

family to Puglia, we put our house

35:11

on Airbnb when otherwise it would just be

35:14

sitting empty. Which meant that we earned

35:16

some extra money that went towards our flights.

35:18

And maybe some souvenirs too. Hosting on

35:20

Airbnb for us is also a family

35:22

affair. My mum is an Airbnb super host.

35:25

She regularly has guests stay in her little

35:27

chalet in her garden. And my dad, who lives

35:29

in France, has his home on Airbnb so that

35:31

when he comes back to visit, he

35:34

is earning some extra money while he's away. My

35:36

dad is 80 and he

35:38

only started hosting on Airbnb a couple of

35:41

years ago. So hopefully that shows you how

35:43

straightforward the whole experience is. He found it

35:45

so easy to list his house that I

35:47

think he's got all his pals finding up

35:49

now too. And it really is straightforward. You

35:52

can choose whether you want to rent out your entire

35:54

home or just some rooms. Alex

35:56

and I for example list our spare bedroom and

35:59

that works really well. The wealth I. Say.

36:01

If you have a trip coming up

36:03

and you want to earn some extra

36:06

money while you're away your home I

36:08

be worth more than you think. Find

36:10

out how much as Air Bnb.qaeda ek

36:13

36:15

eat a forward/host think he to air

36:17

Bnb. So.

36:20

Chapter four Than guys. There is your

36:23

hidden Chen. Said that is a

36:25

place that you love forces at. My

36:27

listeners might not know say much about.

36:33

The the stop the was like

36:35

rather would be mostly so you

36:37

could do. Better.

36:43

I think we always go around

36:45

the World series Buffy they may

36:47

have been gonna total loss due

36:49

to a little bit of have

36:51

a dog shows and movies when

36:53

when my also as a little

36:56

bit everyone on the comes as

36:58

the city that of beauty from

37:00

the employees. And co workers.

37:04

Do is Donna! The

37:09

Bush. Can

37:12

you tell me that more about why

37:14

you love? don't process the people? The

37:16

people from Northwestern. Ah. Very,

37:20

very generous. Shed very

37:23

kind and then. They're

37:26

very, very famous. I

37:28

didn't expect you to say that any.

37:31

What is it said to don't know

37:33

but I just don't Answer is very

37:35

refreshing brother to live other related. Definitive

37:40

They said he isn't. On

37:46

the web or abroad is

37:48

a with so proud of

37:50

our last Inverse is and

37:52

in Scotland Yard. Anywhere

37:55

or feels. A

37:58

bit and diseases. I don't know,

38:01

not in the UK. Yeah,

38:03

Cork is nice in Ireland. Cork,

38:05

I don't know. Cork, yes. Yeah, I

38:08

was not playing. And

38:10

then... They were very thinking. I thought

38:13

it, yeah, they're personal. It's

38:15

nice to present. It's nice to start. I

38:19

guess this is the benefit of going on all

38:21

these amazing tours, isn't it? Well, I

38:23

think it is giving you a little

38:25

venue rundown of the people in the

38:27

theatre. Yeah. And

38:30

it's not as all of those places are.

38:33

Is there somewhere... Why are you interviewing me? She's

38:35

interviewing me. No, because I've been treated as a

38:37

girl. Is there

38:39

anywhere else... Yes. That's maybe

38:42

not in the UK that

38:44

you quite like? Well, I

38:46

did love Bangkok. I

38:49

loved it, wasn't I? Is

38:51

that not you for me? Oh,

38:54

shit. Oh, fuck. Um...

39:01

Where is your jam? Where

39:03

is my jam? Yeah, where is my jam? Oh,

39:05

I see. I

39:10

have to be honest with you. I haven't got time.

39:12

I know it's rubbish. I can't think

39:14

of anywhere, really, that's a

39:17

jam. So it's been so lovely. I

39:19

think it's lovely, yeah. Which bit? To...

39:21

Coe Saint-Moury. No, that's... Coe Saint-Moury?

39:23

That's in town. I

39:26

went to the Africa, so the... Jesus, you were lost. And

39:31

you were... The Fari. Ah,

39:34

I've been to safari in South Africa.

39:36

Do you have to be? No.

39:39

No. I went to... Auckland.

39:42

I did well. I did well. I just kept out. No. Some

39:45

jams in South Africa? Yeah, South

39:47

Africa's like... I'm just trying to think of somewhere

39:49

else. I think I did like all the pictures

39:51

you did. Portofino. Ah, okay.

39:54

I found my love in

39:56

Portofino. To the very last

39:58

occasion. Thank you. about

40:00

tricky romances. What are

40:02

they to know is? Yeah. So,

40:05

it's really well-believable. Do

40:07

people acknowledge it? Do

40:10

people acknowledge it or do they... Does

40:14

everyone know it and not say it?

40:17

Intensive. Yeah, they say it early in

40:19

the day. Oh! They love these. Yeah.

40:21

Like, everyone knew that they were having

40:23

to make romantic love about it. Oh,

40:25

when you say... When you say everybody knew,

40:28

you mean you. Yeah,

40:30

sorry, I... That's not my answer. In your house.

40:32

Is that what you wanted? Yes, it is. Right,

40:34

yes, it is. I don't

40:36

think that it's anything wrong about

40:38

the strictly romance at all. It's

40:41

one of the things that, if you're funny

40:43

enough with the person you dance with, and

40:45

she's single or he's single, whatever, there's nothing

40:47

wrong with it. It's like going in the

40:49

office and turning along with the person who's

40:51

working in the same room with you. It's

40:53

just life. It's just life. Yeah, but I'm not

40:55

saying that there's anything wrong with it at all. I'm just

40:57

saying, can people... Do

41:00

you also get all the other girls to dance with you?

41:02

Oh, we've got guys. Oh, we have to... We've got way

41:04

too focused on what we have to do on the Saturday

41:06

night. The thing is, is that you're not in the same

41:09

room. Ed Duck. Ed Duck. Sometimes we only... You see people

41:11

only on Saturday. Yeah, exactly. Because

41:13

you're in the studio on your own, doing your own

41:15

thing and then coming together on Saturday and then you've

41:17

got the show. Yeah. And everyone's just a bit too

41:19

tense. And sometimes you're not even just in the same

41:21

studio. Sometimes we're different seated. Some people practice in Manchester,

41:24

but it's in London. So we see each other on

41:26

the Sunday... The irony is, is we don't see each

41:28

other. We don't see each other. That's the irony, until

41:30

the show day. That's why you're not so happy on

41:32

the show day because you're all together. Yeah, and then

41:34

all that sort of romantic stuff is all in the

41:36

press and on socials and stuff. And it's all just...

41:39

So press it to there to read it and stuff.

41:41

And it's a bit of a sort of people at home like

41:43

all these romance things and try to think,

41:46

what is it for, is it not? It's

41:48

fascinating. It's part of the fun of it,

41:50

really. Yeah. I think I've thought

41:52

in every season that somebody who has enough of

41:55

somebody. I'm invariably

41:57

in love with

41:59

people. I can't have myself, I'm just a

42:01

sucker for it. I love him, I love him.

42:04

I know this is a crime. I'll

42:06

wake up. He's getting

42:08

emotional at the moment. I think it's me age.

42:12

And I think it's me. Yes.

42:16

Right, stop the five. Mm. Mm.

42:22

Mm. Oh,

42:24

well, you're trying to get together. Together,

42:28

wherever we go. It's

42:30

what I pitched a card, isn't it? It's what

42:32

I pitched a card. Do you

42:34

know what's really interesting? This is

42:37

very, this is absolutely true. You

42:39

look at Giovanni, he's kind of

42:41

cool. Gives it a bit of

42:43

that. He's kind of stylish, just to get

42:45

laid back. Thank you. He gives it a

42:47

lot of that. Giovanni Benitez.

42:51

You move forward in love with me in 15 seconds. Look,

42:53

it has happened in 10 seconds. I'm

42:55

in the wrong place. And

42:58

I said, you want to, oh, let me drive. He said, no,

43:00

I drive. I drive the car. It's my city.

43:03

I drive the car in my country. And then I drove

43:05

the car. And I had to drive the car in this country.

43:07

I said, look, you drive the car, and we're going down the

43:09

road. And we tried

43:11

to turn around, and I said, don't, don't. Be

43:14

careful that you've got to put it in a ditch.

43:16

But he said, no, I drive the car. I drive

43:18

the car. And so he beaches the

43:20

car. Yes. He beaches the

43:22

car. And this, and this, and this. This was

43:25

the first time. I said, you've been to the

43:27

car. He's a nice man. I said, you've

43:29

been to the car. You know? This

43:31

is the first time I'd ever seen him get

43:33

up. He got anxiety. I do. He

43:36

got anxiety. He started to get a bit hot. And

43:38

all the time. He started to go. Even the accident

43:40

slipped. He went a bit down. He stumbled. It

43:43

was, I never thought, you know what? It

43:45

made me laugh so much. What

43:48

was about to come? It wasn't just

43:50

the kind of problem was listening to

43:53

him when they all speak. That

43:55

was the one you can draw. All the way.

43:57

Oh, but you're. Genuinely,

44:00

genuinely, genuinely. Absolutely.

44:04

It was a moment. And largely attacked. It was

44:06

very, very funny. And then of course I had

44:08

to get out of the car. And help. I

44:11

had to literally pick the car up

44:13

with Acculice, like a Kuleesh, and

44:15

then move the car back onto the road, and then

44:17

he drove off and left me. First time I'd ever

44:20

seen him lose any sort of...

44:22

Yeah. He was like, hey, that's my

44:24

call. Don't look me in the eye.

44:26

I even become bring. It's

44:29

not. Yeah,

44:32

what's my name again? Para-Cab.

44:34

Para-Cab. So enjoying being

44:37

transported all around around 50 years. Oh,

44:39

thank you. And the final destination

44:45

at the top of your travel back list, the top

44:47

of your travel wish list, where would you actually

44:49

be? Nothing to do yet. I want

44:51

to go to America. Yeah. And specifically I would

44:53

love to go to Argentina. That's like America. Yes.

44:57

South America. Oh, okay. And

45:00

the reason why, because I'm a fan of Argentina and

45:02

China. So I would

45:04

love to go and see where

45:06

everything started, really. There would be my

45:11

place to go. Oh, such a great choice. I so

45:13

long I'll go with Antoine. Very

45:15

well. Seriously. I've always wanted to go. I mean, we

45:17

talked about Maldives here. I've never been to Maldives. I've

45:20

never been to Maldives. But I think... The kind of

45:22

a serious one, Maldives. No, very interesting. I'd love to

45:24

go to... I've never

45:26

been, I know it should be surprising for you, but

45:28

I've never been to New York. I've never been

45:30

to New York. I'd like to go to New

45:32

York. America has always been my photo place.

45:35

New York, LA, Las

45:38

Vegas. Vegas. Never been to

45:40

Vegas. Never been to Vegas. Never been to Vegas.

45:42

But you know, I've never been to Vegas. I

45:44

went to LA. We dipped in for about four

45:46

days. Went to LA. But

45:48

didn't do much. New York. Didn't do much.

45:51

Broadway. Broadway, should be Broadway. We

45:53

should go to New York, really. We'll do a little thing

45:55

in New York. And then we'll go off

45:57

to Vegas afterwards. I think in a fact, do a

45:59

show. I'll do a show and then come back. No,

46:02

it's fine. Nice. And then pop down

46:04

to Buenos Aires and do a tango. There's a trip. To promote

46:06

the album. That's a trip. That's a

46:08

trip. To promote the album. Giovanni

46:11

Pannice, Anton Dubek, those were your

46:13

travel diaries. Thank you so

46:15

much. Thank you. Thank you. Oh

46:23

wow, a huge thank you to

46:25

Anton and Giovanni for

46:27

joining me on my first

46:30

episode of the season. It

46:32

was a real laugh getting to chat to them. Episode
