I've lived and worked in authoritarian states on and off where things just work, and the wealth and safety are awe-inspiring. Then you get back to the democracy you were born into and sometimes, secretly wish, that you'd be able to go back because you just felt safer, and had the impression that the system you were in just feels better thereby contributing to your overall well-being.
