RATING
Superb acting and sound.
It takes a little bit for the core mystery to arrive, but there's a feeling of something building from the start. The story unfolds in a series of recordings of the doomed crew of the titular Waystation and the voice acting is solid across the board. The sound design helps create a mood of isolation which serves the story well. There's a real sense of hopelessness that hangs over the crew even from the first episode that makes the show feel more like a tragedy than a mystery.
A podcast I feel is distinctly more than the sum of its already impressive parts. A bit slow to start, but very good at drawing you in, and well worth it. My only criticism is that it isn't longer; with such a full, rich cast and intriguing world, I feel we didn't get nearly enough time to appreciate them.
In what can only be described as hard-right propaganda, or perhaps a centrist’s wet dream, one of the main antagonistic factions in the story is a group of “protesters” (the protagonists utter the word like a slur) who regularly kidnap, torture and lynch civilians while also having the resources to wage guerilla warfare against all-powerful corporations. And of course, I’d be remiss if I did not mention the frenzied cackling and Machiavellian scheming, complete with a brief supervillain monologue to boot. This fascinating narrative choice didn’t so much age poorly as instantly ferment into a pile of stinky slop the instant it was made. Aside from that, the occasional awkward delivery and a few pieces of sub-par writing, it’s a mostly okay show. Can’t wait for the sequel where antifa supersoldiers conquer the universe and force everyone into a vegan, horizontally-structured existence of riding public transport and eating Marx’s bibliography for breakfast.
There is something I find so intensely terrifying about space, and this podcast triggered that fear in spades. Now when I say triggered, I mean that in the best way possible. This show does a great job of immersing the listener completely, and dragging them into the isolated setting. There is a real sense of building dread, which, I think, is far more effective at creating an emotional response, and it does it wonderfully. Great voice acting, and complimentary sound design. Waystation had me holding me breath at moments, as I just wait for what feels like the inevitable.
Investigation based on audio "found footage". Fast paced and easy to follow. Very well done.
A gem, totally awesome, 5* writing, acting & production.
The characters are compelling and the tale is a taut thriller. Hard work went into this one and it shows.
