(Trigger Warning: sexual assault and street harassment) Rebecca Chiao is the Co-Founder of HarassMap, an online tool that pinpoints incidents of sexual violence throughout Egypt, which in turn makes the streets safer for people of all genders. Harassment was not something residents really talked about when she moved to Cairo in 2004, but because of tools like HarassMap, the ideas surrounding sexual assault and harassment have since changed. She has helped open up a discussion of what, exactly, constitutes harassment and how everyone in a society can create an environment that has zero tolerance for sexual harassment and assault. Listen to the episode to learn more about the history of Egypt (did you know harassers used to be chased down the street and have their heads shaved?!), how HarassMap works, and what kind of change she’s made since first introducing it.
