This week on These Four Years, we draw parallels between Claire’s new favorite book (Iran Awakening by Shirin Ebadi) and our favorite show/book (The Handmaid’s Tale) and discuss why both teach us about the importance of defending democracy.

In politics, we discuss how the events in Charlottesville are deeply related to Reconstruction with special guest and friend of pod Emily Mennel.

We also discuss overcoming our anxieties about Charlottesville through constructive digital and in-person communication within our communities. Also concerning anxiety, we suggest conquering fear through research and with support.

Finally, we felt justified in spoiling the end of the Divergent series. Skip that bit if you’re offended but skip the movie if you know what’s good.
