This marks ONE YEAR of homeschooling. I’ve had many reflections and clarity the last couple of weeks that might be helpful to any of you who feel lost or are making decisions out of FEAR.

I’m not proud, but similar to my first year of BUSINESS, decisions in my first year of homeschool were mostly made out of fear.
🙀 will my kids be socialized enough? So to make up for this insecurity, let’s sign them up for every co op we can find🤦🏻‍♀️
🙀will Charlie be more triggered to scratch at home if bored? Let’s overbook ourselves so she is so utterly distracted and exhausted she won’t think to scratch.
🙀let’s make homeschool JUST like school. This lead to unnecessary pressure for me to get everything perfect.
🙀let’s let kids be kids and we’ll figure it out together. At least in our home, this didn’t work. Our kids need BOUNDARIES and to know mom and dad are the ones in charge. This provides SAFETY for my kids.

Just a reminder….I’m still only one year in (but do tend to learn life lessons at an accelerated process so wanted to share my reflections).

I knew just a few months in that what we were doing was NOT working, but I was afraid to admit it to my kids, my husband, and others, so I rolled with it. Until during the holiday break it began to feel smothering knowing we’d need to get back to the grind. I was afraid to admit it to anyone, especially letting my kids down. But what I realized was that as parents we need to model REAL LIFE for our kids. To show them that when things are no longer in alignment, we need to step away. That it’s okay to have commitments, friends, and experiences that work in one season and in the next, feel OUTGROWN.

The reason we homeschool is to NOT conform to this world, to live differently than others. I felt freedom when it clicked that my kids are RESILIENT and that we need to model to them that in life you will continually outgrow circumstances. And you will ALWAYS have the power to PIVOT.
