2:51
about this next one Marvel and Hasbro
2:53
are teaming up to bring Marvel characters and stories
2:56
to what magic the gathering I
2:59

3:07
reminds me of like rainy and stormy

4:07
because I have a big green monster deck and it's
4:09
all about just like Smashing
4:12

4:16
white deck where you're impossible to kill
4:19
cuz you just keep Proliferating

5:09
gonna have to put on top of the bookshelf cuz he's too
5:11
tall All
5:14
right Ladies are in the house.
5:17
Yeah, I feel like it's like ladies night The
5:20
girls are are in the pod today.
5:23
Um, so let's talk some women of Marvel and
5:25
of course I'm talking women of Marvel rogue
5:27
our pals Ellie and pre-the over at the women
5:29
of Marvel podcast love rogue So
5:32
much so there is a very long
5:34
episode coming for you. It's jam-packed with
5:36
conversations about You
5:38
know our favorite comic book couple rogue
5:41
and gambit. Well, maybe not Ryan's Ryan
5:44
and his opinions of gambit are
5:47
not here on the show today Yeah,
5:50
for now. We embrace love And
5:52
they talk with writers Kelly Thompson and
5:55
Alyssa Whitney about writing
5:57
rogue in the comics and in prose and
6:00
They also talk a lot about X-Men the animated
6:02
series with writer Julia Leewald and
6:04
the voice of Rogue herself, Lenora Zahn. Plus
6:08
they ask real couples therapists
6:10
what she would do if Rogue and Gambit sat down
6:13
on her couch. I can only
6:15
imagine, it's like find a new boyfriend,
6:17
whatever, husband, whatever, it's fine.
6:21
But TBD on that, definitely go check
6:23
out this episode wherever you're listening
6:25
to this episode, wherever you get your podcasts.
6:28
Yeah, you know I like that you asked
6:31
this idea of what if
6:33
being on that couch because we have another
6:35
what if that's what if Wanda Maximoff
6:38
and Peter Parker were siblings.
6:41
This is actually a novel, not a comic book,
6:43
so I'm really excited about this. Wanda
6:46
and Peter Parker embrace great responsibility
6:49
in their next adventure of an epic
6:51
multiversal series that reimagines
6:56
iconic Marvel origin stories. Okay,
6:58
so the question
7:01
is what if Wanda didn't have to suffer her
7:03
grief alone? What if she had
7:06
Peter Parker? So in this novel
7:08
all Wanda has known is her friendly
7:10
little neighborhood in Queens. As
7:12
an infant after her parents have died she was
7:14
adopted by Aunt May and Uncle Ben, the two
7:17
best parents ever, and as siblings
7:19
with her idiot brother Peter
7:22
Parker. Two things hiding
7:24
a spider bite, joining a secret
7:26
fight club, and becoming a superhero
7:28
or somehow good ideas. I love
7:30
how this is a completely different perspective
7:33
on your life choices Peter Parker
7:37
are suspect. Yeah,
7:40
also Peter Parker is a sibling, super
7:42
interesting because like he is a
7:44
strong only child by 100%. But
7:48
now you add in Wanda's powers, blood,
7:51
chaos, suspicion, all the things
7:53
that come with Wanda as she
7:56
harnesses her powers under the guidance
7:58
of Doctor Strange. because New
8:00
York, Peter
8:02
is then standing by her side in the sanctum
8:05
centorum. And as they try to protect
8:07
New York, the Parker
8:08
siblings, oh, it's so good, learn
8:10
that with great powers, there must
8:12
also come. Tacos.
8:14
Great responsibilities. Oh,
8:16
I'm so close. Yes, always tacos.
8:19
But unfortunately, greater loss. So
8:21
much like
8:22
Star-Lord dropping his taco.
8:24
All right, so those of you who love What If,
8:26
and you're like, I need more of this, this is actually
8:28
the second What If novel, following
8:31
What If Loki Was Worthy, and Loki and
8:33
Valkyrie story by Madeline Rue. And
8:36
I gotta say, I'm very excited
8:38
because this particular one, What
8:41
If One and Peter Parker Were Siblings, was
8:43
written by Seanan McGuire, friend of the show,
8:46
and is publishing in July, 2024. Heck
8:50
yeah, check it out. All right,
8:52
Angelique, straight up, you work on Marvel's Voices.
8:55
Is it true? And there's
8:58
a new Marvel's Voices Legend anthology
9:02
coming July 31st. It's a beautiful
9:05
one shot. You do phenomenal work on
9:07
these with the team. What is it
9:09
about? So I love it. So Marvel's Legends
9:12
is gonna be celebrating Black History Month.
9:14
We're really excited because if you've
9:16
not seen this, incredible
9:18
cover, it's so good. It's
9:21
featuring Misty Knight, Patriot, and
9:23
also has a little shout out to Ghost Light
9:25
on the cover. It's gonna be on sale January
9:28
31st, just in time for Black History Month. And
9:31
as usual, it's our special one shot. We
9:34
also get an Elijah
9:37
Eli Bradley story, AKA Patriot.
9:40
It has been written. I've actually kinda
9:43
seen some of it by David Walker,
9:45
an artist, Eter Messiah. It
9:48
is gonna be, I'm really excited
9:50
about this because we're also celebrating Misty Knight's 50th
9:53
anniversary. And for those who don't know,
9:55
like Misty Knight is actually
9:57
the first Black soup woman. superhero
10:00
in Marvel Comics
10:03
and the first interracial kiss
10:06
with her boyfriend, Iron Fist, at the time. So
10:09
we're celebrating her 50th anniversary. She was also a style
10:11
icon, let's be very clear,
10:12
with writer Justina Ireland,
10:16
who just a dope, speculative
10:18
fiction writer. And you've been
10:20
waiting for it. It's going to be a Daughters of the Dragon
10:22
adventure. And then
10:24
TV writer Ezra Clayton Daniels makes
10:27
his Marvel Comics debut alongside
10:29
artist Sean Damien Hill, who
10:32
did Bishop War College, but was also
10:35
in the very first Marvel's Voices
10:38
with a Michael Collins Deathlock
10:41
tale. So really excited about that. Also,
10:43
you should check out, we've got Marvel's Voices
10:45
Avengers number one coming out very,
10:48
very soon this year. So we've got so much
10:50
goodness coming. Yeah, we love it. Speaking
10:53
of some goodness, let's dive
10:55
into some Marvel Studios Loki season two.
10:58
No spoilers, but episode four is out this
11:01
week. It is a doozy. The
11:04
timelines are time lining. The
11:07
things are happening. Victor, timely
11:09
miss minutes. There's a lot. It's a lot. It's
11:12
a lot. It's a lot. It's all converging
11:15
together. I can't
11:17
wait for you guys to watch episode four. It's phenomenal.
11:20
Go check it out. It is now streaming right now
11:22
on Disney Plus. But
11:24
there is more for the timeline. Yeah. Oh
11:27
yeah. The Marvel Cinematic Universe
11:29
and official timeline is out now. All
11:32
of your questions will be answered
11:34
in the MCU, which is vast
11:36
and incredibly varied and richly complex.
11:39
It'd be different worlds, different timelines, countless
11:41
characters. All of the fights you've had with
11:43
your friends, you now have a guide
11:46
to this universe and is created
11:48
in close collaboration with Marvel Studios. It
11:50
will answer the biggest questions. What happened?
11:53
When? Where? And
11:56
why? Also, Flurkin's. The entire story
11:58
of the MCU from before. the Big Bang
12:00
to the Blip and beyond. And
12:03
stay tuned because we actually have an interview with
12:05
the writers in just a few minutes.
12:08
That's again Marvel Studios, the Marvel
12:10
Cinematic Universe, an official timeline is available
12:12
now wherever books are sold.
12:15
Hey now, settle some
12:17
arguments amongst the kids. And
12:20
speaking of fans of all ages,
12:22
we have got some phenomenal
12:25
stuff over on Disney Plus as well. Lego
12:27
Marvel Avengers Code Red. It's
12:30
a new original special. It's now streaming
12:32

12:34
like you put Lego with anything.
12:36
You put Lego with anything and it
12:38
becomes magic. It
12:40
is the cutest. All
12:43
the Lego specials are so fun. Definitely
12:45
don't want to miss the Lego Marvel Avengers Code
12:47

12:49
superheroes in Lego brick form.
12:52
There's Iron Man, Captain America,
12:54
Black Widow, Thor, Hulk, and you
12:56
know what? As usual, they're going
12:58
to come together. They're going to save the day. The code
13:00
is going to be red. The Collector
13:03

13:25
All right, so for those who love Star Wars,
13:28
The War of Stars,
13:29
we've got Star Wars Thrawn Alliances
13:32
adaptation by Timothy Zahn with
13:34
writer Jodie Houser. Who
13:37
knows Star Wars better than Jodie Houser?
13:39
An artist Andrea DeVito and Star
13:41
Wars Mace Windu written by the Mark
13:43
Benardin, like the nerd nerds,
13:48
and drawn by Georges Genti.
13:52
Star Wars Jango Fett by Ethan
13:54
Sachs and artist Luke Ross. Yo,
13:58
this is so good. All my friends. That's
14:00
so exciting, right? Literally,
14:02
I'm reading these names like, oh, I know
14:04
that person. Oh, that person's dope.
14:08
For a special sneak peek at the series
14:10
and more, pick up Star Wars Revelations
14:13
2023 number one in December.
14:16
December is gonna be loaded. Heck
14:20
yeah. Definitely
14:22
go check it out. Put it on your pull list. Also for
14:24
your pull list coming in February, the
14:26
edge of Spider-Verse is back, baby.
14:28
February 22nd. It's
14:31
now a perennial spider hit. It's
14:33
back. It's building to
14:35
the biggest Spider-Verse epic in Marvel
14:37
Comics history. You're welcome. It
14:39
is, as I said, launching in February and
14:42
the series is gonna take readers to the bleeding
14:44
edge of the Spider-Verse, reacquainting
14:47
you with some old faves, introducing
14:49
you to some important web-slinging
14:52
heroes. Maybe you haven't met yet. Because
14:55
we know we love the edge of Spider-Verse.
14:57
It is where we meet some incredible characters
15:00
and this time will be no different. Edge of Spider-Verse
15:02
number one is gonna kick off with a first appearance
15:04
of Weapon 8 or
15:07
the 111. The exciting
15:09
comeback of the tech-savvy Spider-Bite. So
15:14
we all know Weapon X, obviously, but who the
15:16
heck is this Weapon 8? We're gonna find out in
15:18
that story. It's by Colin Kelly and Jackson Lansing
15:21
of Captain America fame as well as artist
15:23
travel foreman. And in this
15:25
universe Weapon X escapes that
15:27
facility. You might remember that. He
15:29
does do that in the comics. And then
15:32
they call on their greatest previous success
15:34
to get him back. So do not
15:36
miss it. Come in in February.
15:38
It's just the start of the saga
15:41
that's gonna set up that next Spider-Verse-al
15:44
story. So you're not gonna
15:46
want to miss it. And also, you know, the
15:48
first issue of a new Spider-Character, you gotta get it.
15:52
But we've talked so much about comics coming up.
15:55
We gotta talk about comics that are out this
15:57
week. That's right. It is time for our
15:59
new-
15:59
comics pics whoo
16:02
heck yeah it is a it is
16:05
a jam-packed
16:06
violent well
16:09
it is almost Halloween so
16:12
we have to choose we
16:14
have to choose Marvel zombies black white and
16:16
blood number one it's giving
16:19
black and white and red just as it
16:21
said heart-wrenching there the
16:23
art is phenomenal it's all black and white with splashes
16:26
of red you know the splashes we're talking
16:28
about it's not for the kids but it's for
16:31
us we love it I mean
16:33
listen there are three different stories in this undefeated
16:36
hope and deliverance they're all phenomenal
16:38
Garth Ennis is doing his zombie thing
16:41
he knows a zombie moment Ashley
16:43
Allen is doing some phenomenal writing and their beautiful art
16:45
by all the artists thought Fernandez
16:48

16:50

17:18

17:20

17:23

17:26
another story that is just phenomenal so
17:29
beautiful this issue Jean Grey

17:33
course I would expect nothing less from
17:35
the icon Louise Simonson
17:38
oh yeah who is writing this series gorgeous
17:41
art by Bernard Chang unreal there
17:44
is this like beautiful one
17:46
page that is like a big
17:49
sort of collage of
17:51
all of these really iconic Jean moments it
17:53
kind of reminds me of that that
17:56
really iconic Jean image where she's like flaming
17:59
out in the middle and then there's like the fractals
18:01
of her life. Very similar to that but
18:04
following more of like her dark
18:06
descent. But those are comics for this week. Go
18:09
get them. They're out and available for you now.
18:11
And you can check
18:12
out more comics that are out this week on
18:14
marvel.com.
18:14
Yeah and coming
18:17
up soon we've got Ellie Pyle as she chats with
18:19
Anthony Bresnikan, Amy Ratcliffe and
18:22
Rebecca Theodore-Vachon about Marvel
18:24
Studios, the Marvel Cinematic Universe
18:26
and Official Timeline. We'll be right back
18:28
after this.
18:39
You're listening to This Week in Marvel. I'm Lorraine
18:41
Cink. And I'm Angelique Roche. And
18:44
we are getting into
18:46
that interview as promised with Anthony Bresnikan,
18:49
Amy Ratcliffe and Rebecca Theodore-Vachon
18:52
talking all about that beautiful Marvel
18:54
Timeline. Hello
18:58
everyone. So before we dive
19:00
in, a question that we ask all of our guests
19:03
is what is your Marvel origin story and
19:06
how did you first get into Marvel? And
19:08
why don't you introduce yourselves as well
19:11
as you give us your origin story? Oh sure.
19:14
I'm Rebecca Theodore-Vachon and
19:16
my Marvel origin story started
19:18
when I was about 11 or 12. I
19:21
had my best friend, her brother, collected
19:23
comic books. And I believe
19:25
the first Marvel comic book I ever read
19:27
was Uncanny X-Men 167.
19:30
And that was the
19:33
storyline with the Brood. It was part of the Brood saga.
19:35
And that was when Professor X had been
19:37
taken over by the Brood. And
19:40
they basically had to give him
19:42
a new cybernetic
19:43
body. And once
19:45
I read that, I was hooked. And I
19:47
became a Marvel fan after that. That's
19:49
awesome. Amy, how about you? Sure.
19:52
I'm Amy Ratcliffe. And I didn't
19:54
grow up with comics. That just wasn't
19:56
something that was in
19:57
my world. I'm from a very small rural
19:59
town. I don't even know where
20:01
I would have gotten them, thinking back. But
20:04
I knew the X-Men animated series. Once
20:06
you say those words, that theme song is just in
20:08
your head for the rest of the day, and I'm okay
20:10
with that. And then, you
20:13
know, several years after that, when the X-Men
20:15
movies started coming out, I
20:18
just kept leading into the X-Men and being really excited
20:20
about them without ever connecting that there were
20:23
comic books. So it took
20:25
a while for me to get
20:27
into comics, probably around the time the MCU
20:29
started to get to Marvel. And
20:32
I started with X-Men because
20:35
I'd spent so much of my time with them and
20:37
got lists from friends and they're like, okay, just
20:39
read Days of Future Past, read the Dark
20:41
Phoenix saga. And I'm
20:44
so glad I did. And the comics
20:46
world really opened up from there. And I discovered
20:48
Captain America and Daredevil. And
20:51
there's so many comics, did you know?
20:53
So many Marvel comics.
20:56
There are so many
20:58
comics. There are so many.
21:01
And our Marvel origin stories are actually
21:03
very similar, Amy. So I
21:06
appreciate yours on a very
21:08
personal level. Anthony, how
21:10
about
21:12
you? Yeah, hi. My name is Anthony
21:14
Bresnikand. I'm a film journalist,
21:17
television journalist, all sorts
21:19
of different kinds of entertainment, books, movies,
21:21
TV, you name it. I've been doing
21:23
it for probably 20 years.
21:26
I've been covering the Marvel Cinematic Universe
21:28
from the very beginning. So
21:31
my Marvel origin, I would say,
21:33
it was pretty loose. I was never
21:37
someone who followed every
21:39
issue religiously and followed
21:42
the connectivity of the comics. I know that's one of the
21:44
great joys of the comic books
21:46
and something the MCU emulated. I was
21:49
much more of like, hey, you've got the flu. Here
21:51
are some comic books from the 7-Eleven. And
21:55
I would read those. I read a lot. I was
21:57
really into cartoons and toys. So
22:00
the G.I. Joe and Transformers comics
22:02
that Marvel created, the Star
22:04
Wars comics that they created. I was super
22:06
into those. But again, it was much
22:08
more of like drop in and drop
22:11
out. It wasn't until I got
22:13
older and was like a teenager that
22:16
I really began reading like the
22:18
X-Men comics of the 90s that I really
22:20
loved, that everybody really loved. I
22:23
think it was Secret Wars, one of my favorites. And
22:25
I know it's one of my brother's favorites too. And when
22:28
he brought it up, I was like, oh my God, vividly
22:30
remember that issue. And it was
22:33
a Secret Wars issue, I think
22:35
later in the series, if memory serves,
22:37
where Dr. Doom is like burned
22:41
and decaying. And it's this really
22:43
striking scary image on the cover
22:45
of a comic book. And that, I've
22:48
always been a big horror fan too, so that kind of drew
22:50
me in. But I'm much more immersed in
22:52
it now as an adult, which is totally fine
22:54
by me.
22:56
All right, so speaking of continuity, you
22:58
all are the writers of the
23:01
Marvel Studios, the Marvel Cinematic
23:03
Universe, an official timeline. And
23:05
this is something that fans have been asking
23:07
for, for what feels like centuries.
23:11
So tell us how this book came
23:13
to be.
23:14
Yeah, so I got a call one day
23:16
from DK Publishing and
23:20
they said we're putting together a team.
23:23
We're putting together a group
23:25
of writers to tackle
23:28
the timeline of the MCU.
23:31
And first person I
23:33
called was Amy to say, what's
23:35
it like working on these books? Because this is the first one I've
23:37
done and she's done many of them. And
23:40
then when it came time to finding
23:43
co-writers to work with, she
23:46
was already on DK's list, she was on my
23:48
list and I added
23:51
Rebecca to that list as well, because
23:54
I know her work covering
23:56
the MCU, she's fantastic, we've
23:58
never teamed up before, although. I've
24:00
tried a bunch of different times and
24:02
she has too, but they're both wonderful
24:05
writers and it was a real pleasure to just
24:07
put this book together, look at the movies,
24:11
any of the background material that Marvel
24:13
Studios could provide us. So
24:16
our job was to find what in
24:18
the movies is hard and fast.
24:20
Where is there a date on a newspaper, on an email,
24:23
on a television screen? When does somebody mention
24:25
a date, mention a holiday, mention
24:28
this or that? Anything where you could orient
24:30
yourself in the chronology
24:33
and then use those to sort
24:38
of place
24:40
the other events that don't have like a hard and
24:42
fast date associated with them. They
24:45
don't have any documentation, right? But you know relatively when
24:47
they happen in relation to these other events. But
24:50
I would love to hear from
24:52
Rebecca and from Amy about their experience
24:54
putting it all together too.
24:56
I will kick things off and say,
24:58
and I'm sure you ran into this Rebecca
25:00
Anthony too, like what a joy it was to go
25:02
back and rewatch things and also what
25:04
a curse in some ways because
25:06
you'd be like, I just need to rewatch these
25:09
few scenes about the Battle of New York and
25:11
I'm just going to take notes. And then next thing I know,
25:13
I have watched all of the Avengers
25:17
and that happened repeatedly.
25:20
How many times did you all rewatch
25:22
these movies? A
25:25
lot. Yeah,
25:28
even before I got the project,
25:30
I mean, especially once we were in lockdown because
25:33
of the pandemic, I was visiting these movies
25:35
at least once a month. So just like,
25:37
and all of them are in Disney Plus, which is great.
25:39
That did make it very convenient. I'm like, I don't
25:41
have to get up and get out my various Blu-rays.
25:45
And especially when you're like, you know, because some of our inner
25:47
stiches, it would be about like I had one that
25:50
was about Nebula and Gamora. So it was very
25:52
easy to go to very like the various scenes
25:54
that were key to their relationship and pivotal moments.
25:57
And it was really like. the
26:00
best part about this
26:01
and it's like in addition to it being Writing
26:03
about Marvel and NCU is like kind of digging
26:06
into the character like the wise behind
26:08
things and how things play such a net People
26:10
and things play such an important role
26:12
So did you divide up your rewatching
26:14
based on like the specific pages
26:16
you were each working on there was this master
26:19
Excel sheet and then I
26:22
think we only had like
26:23
One zoom meeting when the
26:26
three of us met together and we were just basically
26:29
Parceling out like oh, I'll I'll do you
26:31
know Someone will do battle of New York.
26:33
Somebody else will do battle of Wakanda
26:35
and I had suggested Doing
26:39
a section on the friendship between
26:41
Hawkeye and Black Widow So that's
26:43
pretty much how that went and and just
26:46
for me it was I really
26:49
There were specific characters and locations
26:52
and storylines that I did want to Cover
26:54
and then there were some that were maybe a little
26:56
bit out of my comfort zone that I decided
26:59
like hey Let me do that to kind of challenge
27:01
myself. Like I did the whole section on all
27:03
of the spider-man suits
27:05
From the spider-man truly
27:08
the the latest spider-man trilogy with Tom Holland.
27:10
So that was a lot of Okay,
27:13
I was gonna say my challenge like of those
27:15
things was like I'll do the Iron Man armors were anything
27:18
related to like super Like detailed like
27:20
that or like tech. I'm just like it's a cool outfit,
27:22
right?
27:23
But there are so many different
27:25
versions and they all do different things. So
27:27
that one was a good challenge So
27:30
we've talked a lot about the various challenges that
27:32
you all faced in working with this What are you most
27:35
proud of in terms of how this book turned
27:37
out? It's just so comprehensive I
27:39
think everyone
27:40
here
27:41
Anthony and Rebecca and are
27:43
so some knowledgeable about the MCU
27:46
and have written about it, you know since it started 15 years
27:50
ago, so to be able to bring
27:52
all of that to go through so many so
27:54
many hours of stories and Capture
27:58
them in this way that is exhaustive
28:02
and is beautifully designed and very,
28:05
it's very accessible. And
28:07
you know, you're not reading
28:10
Wikipedia pages for the MCU.
28:13
And it just, I think is a beautiful
28:15
resource for hopefully
28:18
the storytellers, for fans,
28:20
certainly in my day job
28:23
as an entertainment reporter, like, I
28:25
would have killed to have this over the years.
28:28
And I think it's, I think fans are going to
28:30
be so excited to have it all laid out officially
28:33
like this. So I'm proud of just how
28:35
it came together, ultimately. Well,
28:38
agreeing with with Amy and I think
28:41
just
28:41
revisiting all of these characters
28:44
and stories. On
28:46
one level, I think the book is great
28:48
for people. I, you know, I talked to a lot of people,
28:51
you know, who have an interest in Marvel,
28:53
but then they're just like, oh my God, all these movies
28:56
are interconnected. Like, you know, I've
28:58
never watched, you know, I didn't watch Iron
29:00
Man one or two, do I need to watch, you
29:03
know, Captain America versus Avenger in order.
29:05
So I think with this book, it's
29:07
really a way to introduce people
29:10
who may have an interest in the MCU, but
29:12
may feel a little intimidated, like, oh, this is overwhelming.
29:14
Do I have to watch all of these movies?
29:17
And this is a great guide, you know,
29:19
like, I told someone, like, besides, you
29:21
know, being a great
29:21
Christmas gift for people who are MCU
29:24
fans, if you're someone who's new to the MCU,
29:26
you can like literally watch all these movies
29:28
with the book, you know, it's kind of like
29:30
a companion piece, which I think is great.
29:33
And, you know, and also
29:35
I think with the book, working
29:37
on this book, just realizing that
29:39
it's more than just like these plot
29:42
points, and it's more than just like, oh, he
29:44
has a cool costume, or these cool powers
29:46
is that these characters are
29:48
very human, and very
29:51
flawed and very complex. And, you
29:53
know, a lot of these
29:54
storylines were just really reflective
29:56
of the time, like, I remember watching WandaVision,
29:59
and we were like in what year two
30:01
of the pandemic,
30:03
and just that whole overarching
30:05
theme of grief
30:08
and pain. And
30:10
so many people had lost loved ones to
30:14
the coronavirus and everything. So it was just interesting
30:16
to see all these parallels or watching Falcon
30:18
and the Winter Soldiers
30:19
and this conversation
30:21
about patriotism and racism and
30:24
in real time and seeing BLM. And
30:26
it was just like, wow, this
30:28
was written before these things were happening. You
30:30
know what I mean? And so it's just really interesting
30:33
to see like how the MC kind of has the
30:35
pulse of what's going on and with social
30:37
issues and what's going on in our personal
30:39
lives as well. We can see a lot of ourselves
30:42
reflected in these characters.
30:46
I think for me, the
30:49
part of the process that was the most enjoyable
30:51
was rewatching everything with
30:54
my wife and my two kids. They're
30:58
gonna grow up fast. And as the MCU shows
31:00
you like 10 years plus
31:02
now can go by really quickly. And so
31:05
we've watched a lot of those movies together and
31:07
it was really fun to just revisit
31:10
them all. Like as opposed to every now and then
31:12
we would pop it and say like, let's watch Iron Man again or let's
31:14
watch Guardians again. But to just have
31:17
to go back, it was like the best homework
31:19
in the world. Just like, okay, we've
31:21
got to get about nine months to
31:23
write this. So
31:26
it wasn't one of those like smoke up Johnny things
31:29
where like, oh, I'm so sick of watching Marvel movies because
31:31
we could spread them out. And
31:33
we didn't watch them in like any chronological
31:36
order. The book was written
31:39
in chunks because I think
31:42
the first section I did was
31:45
the Guardians just as like
31:47
our test thing because those
31:49
two movies happen like right on top of each other.
31:52
And so there isn't a lot bleeding
31:54
into them. There isn't a lot happening elsewhere
31:56
in the MCU during those times. It was like those
31:58
two movies really stand.
31:59
alone,
32:01
for the most part, at least,
32:03
at least we thought so. Later
32:05
on, we may have figured out every now and then you'd figure out
32:07
like, Oh, no, this happens during that time. So we've got to
32:09
like, squeeze it in. But like, I would write sections
32:12
of the book based on the number
32:15
of movies that overlap with each other. So
32:17
I couldn't really write Civil War,
32:19
the Civil War recap blurbs without
32:23
also having my notes ready on
32:26
Black Widow because Black Widow takes
32:28
place for the most part right
32:30
after, right in the
32:32
midst of the events of Civil
32:34
War. So those had to had
32:37
to weave together. And that happened
32:40
really frequently. So I did all of that,
32:42
first, I would find like, and I would have to write David like,
32:45
Oh, I'm not ready to send this
32:47
section in yet for your editing because I
32:49
have to watch another movie because I know this fits
32:51
in here. And I'm gonna
32:54
end up changing it around anyway. So let me, you
32:56
know, figure out what, which
32:58
movies overlap with each other. And,
33:01
and then occasionally, they're sort of like breaking points, often
33:04
Avengers movies where then, okay, now
33:06
a new set of storytelling begins. And
33:08
then within all of that, the last
33:11
thing that was written was the the
33:13
early parts of the book, the pre history, because
33:16
every movie includes a mention of this
33:18
happened a million years ago, this happened 5000 years ago, this happened 600
33:20
years ago. And so all
33:26
of that stuff, it was important to have those
33:28
notes ready and then construct the pre history
33:31
and then and a lot of that is so vague
33:33
that you're really just placing it in relation
33:36
to each other rather than at a specific time.
33:39
But that was also a lot
33:41
of fun to put together and just try
33:43
to figure out where the legends
33:45
fit in where the
33:48
sort of vague descriptions of the origins of
33:50
the universe and the celestials fit in.
33:52
But but for me, that
33:55
was the most fun, but the proudest part, I think
33:57
you asked about, you know, what made us proud.
34:00
And I'm going to embarrass my co-writers,
34:02
Rebecca and Amy here by saying, I think just
34:05
working with them and we didn't,
34:07
we were like passing our copy
34:10
back and forth to each other. They did their things. I
34:12
did my things. David wove it all together
34:14
ultimately, but just seeing their
34:16
sections come in and being so
34:20
impressed by their writing and the
34:22
soulfulness and attention to detail that they
34:24
put into it, that really made me proud. We
34:27
all three know each other from like
34:30
social media and covering comic
34:32
book movies over the years, but we've never
34:34
worked together, but the two of them
34:36
are really good friends and they're amazing
34:39
journalists. And we were sort of like
34:42
superhero war correspondence together, all
34:44
covering different sections of the universe,
34:47
but contributing back to the same, it was like
34:49
working at the same newspaper. I love
34:51
that.
34:52
I love that. I love that. Well,
34:54
thank you all so much for coming to talk
34:56
to me this afternoon. I am so excited
34:59
for folks to get to read the book and have
35:01
all of their questions answered and maybe discover
35:04
some questions they didn't know they had. Thank you.
35:07
Thanks for having us, Ellie. Yeah,
35:09
thank you.
35:12
That was our
35:13
friend, our colleague, the
35:16
amazing Ellie Powell talking to Anthony Brezvacan,
35:18
Amy Radcliffe and Rebecca Theodore Vachon
35:21
about their brand new book, Marvel Studios
35:23
and Marvel Cinematic Universe, an official timeline
35:25
which is available now wherever
35:28
books are sold. So go check that out.
35:32
All right. You know what time it is.
35:34
It is time for some community.
35:37
It's this week in messages.
35:40
So our guest next week is the multi
35:42
award winning British composer Natalie Holt,
35:45
who's going to join us to chat about her work on
35:47
Marvel Studios, Loki and how its score
35:49
has evolved throughout its second season.
35:52
The series is phenomenal. Can't wait for that. But
35:55
until then, we want to know what
35:57
is your favorite score with in
36:00
the Marvel Cinematic Universe, you know,
36:02
that beautiful backing music that makes us
36:05
feel all of the feels.
36:06
Oh, I already know this answer.
36:08
There's so many good ones, but personally,
36:11
just like the Avengers theme. It's
36:13
so iconic. Like you just can't argue
36:16
it. I would have to say it's
36:20
Marvel Studios Thor Ragnarok. I
36:23
like it. It is just enough
36:25
and a second winner
36:28
up would have to be Marvel Studios Gardens
36:30
of the Galaxy Volume 3. Oh,
36:32
the music. All my feelings. So
36:34
good. All my feelings. But of course, tell us what's
36:36
your favorite.
36:37
page at Facebook.com
36:39
slash This Week in Marvel. Just read the
36:41
show. I'm going to read the show. I'm going to
36:43
read the show. I'm going to read the show. I'm going to read the
36:45
show. I'm going to read the show. I'm going to read the show.
36:48
I'm going to read the show. So, last week's question
36:50
of the week, favorite era on the
36:52
MCU timeline. And
37:07
y'all
37:07
have some answers.
37:09
Heck yeah. First up, we got Airbay Dorothea
37:12
at Airbay underscore Excelsior, who said, My
37:14
favorite era in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is Fury's
37:17
big week in which all the heroes come
37:19
band together to stop Loki, assemble
37:21
the Avengers for the first time during the Battle of New
37:23
York and save the day. Hey, sometimes
37:26
you just can't argue with the classics. Yeah, no,
37:28
that's simple, straightforward. And
37:31
it's that moment. It's that moment when it all begins.
37:33
So we have Super Seven Five
37:36
at Super Seven Five. My favorite
37:38
era of the MCU
37:39
is World War II. I love
37:41
the
37:41
foundation set in Cap, first Avenger.
37:44
My favorite MCU movie. And
37:46
although it's set in an alternate reality, I was so
37:48
happy to revisit that era in the Captain
37:50
Carter episode of What If.
37:52
Oh, it's such a good episode. Love
37:55
that.
37:56
We also got an email answering
37:58
last week's question. Question of the Week. Hi,
38:02
all three of us share the same joy from
38:04
NYCC News. Two words,
38:07
infinity, pause. Chewy,
38:10
lucky, alligator, Loki, and Jeff?
38:13
So glad we're on Marvel Unlimited.
38:16
Yours, Heather, Fiona, and
38:18
Nolan. Aw, thank y'all.
38:21
It's so lovely to hear from your little family. It's
38:23
been a minute since I've been on the show, and it's so
38:25
nice to hear from you guys. It's always nice to
38:27
hear from everybody, and it's so nice
38:29
to be back. It's so nice to have you back.
38:33
I'll be in and out on the show popping in from
38:35
time to time to say hello and hang out with
38:37
Ryan and Angelique. So I'm glad
38:40
to be back. Come say hi. But
38:43
until next time, this episode of This
38:45
Week
38:45
in Marvel was produced by
38:46
Jasmine Estrada, Isabelle Robertson, Lorraine
38:49
Cink, Ryan Penagos, and Angelique
38:51
Broché. Our senior manager of
38:53
audio production and development is for pal
38:55
Fred Barton. Emily Godfrey is our
38:58
production manager. And special thanks
39:00
to Jeff the Landshark. Hey, a shark
39:02
with legs? What's next? So like, that's
39:05
it. I'm Lorraine. I'm Angelique.
39:07
And this is Marvel.
39:07
Your universe.
