Hello Marvelites! You're listening
1:13
to This Week in Marvel, episode number 617. I'm
1:16
Ryan Penagos, aka Agent M. And
1:18
I'm rolling solo this week, giving
1:21
love and shouts to our pals Angelique
1:23
Roche and James Monroe Iglehart. They
1:25
couldn't be with me, but the show goes
1:28
on because this is the official Marvel podcast where we get
1:30
to talk about all things happening this
1:32
week in Marvel. That's right, we're going to
1:34
talk about games, comics, movies, books, TV. We
1:36
also
1:38
have a Marvel Insider Code. But
1:40
most importantly, this
1:42
week we are talking to the
1:44
co-writers of the upcoming Ms.
1:47
Marvel, the new mutant comic, Iman
1:49
Vellani and Sabur Perzada. It's
1:51
a good-ass book, y'all, and you're
1:53
going to hear that full interview in just a little
1:55
while. Right now, though, let's get into
1:57
some news.
2:02
First up this week is the launch
2:04
of Marvel Snap on PC. It's
2:06
official, it's here, it's happening. You can download
2:08
it now, you can play it like everybody
2:11
on mobile's been playing it to their hearts
2:13
content for such a long time. Some
2:16
very cool stuff. There's some other
2:18
fun stuff going on for Marvel Snap this week
2:20
because it's Gamescom over in
2:22
Cologne, Germany. I know Ben
2:25
Brode, who's the big creative lead
2:27
on the project. He's out there. Some fun
2:29
stuff. It's real cool.
2:31
This month is also, this whole season has been
2:34
the quote unquote big in Japan
2:36
season, which is really mostly just like tied to
2:38
Wolverine. So we've had great new characters like
2:41
X 23, Lady Deathstrike, Silver Samurai. It
2:44
is super fun times right now. So
2:46
of course, download Marvel Snap on
2:48
PC now.
2:51
Speaking of awesome things
2:53
that you can download, Marvel Move
2:56
is launching next week, you guys. I know
2:58
you've heard it. August 30th is when you will
3:00
be able to download Marvel Move on
3:02
iOS and Android. I will
3:05
be talking about it next week with writer,
3:07
Teenie Howard, who is the writer of our big
3:09
giant amazing X-Men
3:12
series. We'll talk about it a whole bunch more
3:14
next week. Again, Marvel Move launching August
3:17
30th.
3:17
Now let's get into some comic book news,
3:20
starting with Spider-Gwen smash.
3:23
This was previously announced at San
3:25
Diego Comic Con as Spider-Gwen on
3:27
tour. This is the series written by Melissa
3:30
Flores with art by Anid Balam
3:32
and covers by David Nakayama. It's
3:35
a four shoe limited series in which Gwen,
3:38
our favorite Spider-Gwen, she's
3:40
on her Earth 65 and her native
3:42
universe.
3:43
And she's going out on tour with
3:46
the Mary Janes. It's going to be big. It's
3:48
going to be fun. We actually had a conversation with
3:50
Melissa coming up for you in the next couple
3:53
of weeks, which was really
3:55
delightful. This is going to release this December.
3:57
So you got a little ways to go, but.
3:59
excited.
4:02
Another thing you should get excited about is Star Wars Visions,
4:05
Peach Momoko. It's a new
4:07
number one and it's going to let
4:09
Peach just go ham on
4:11
the Star Wars universe. Is that a term? Yeah, that's a term,
4:14
going ham. This is coming out in November
4:16
and it's going to be three one shots
4:19
where we get to see Peach
4:21
do her amazing storytelling, really
4:25
vivid, beautiful imagination, doing
4:27
different tales, utilizing
4:29
the Star Wars characters
4:32
and universe, but totally making it
4:35
very much her own. So this brings a whole bunch of
4:37
new characters and a whole different
4:39
vibe to Star Wars. It's
4:42
going to be very cool. Again, Star Wars Visions,
4:44
Peach Momoko, number one on sale November
4:47
15th.
4:48
More Star Wars news for you. Star
4:51
Wars High Republic phase three. This
4:53
is just like sort of following up
4:55
on what's going on. We are bringing
4:57
back Star Wars, the High Republic. This
4:59
is going to start with a year after
5:02
the destruction of Starlight Beacon. You've
5:04
got March in Row and the Nile
5:06
standing victorious. Dun, dun, dun. The
5:08
galaxy is in turmoil. The once mighty
5:11
Jedi are outclassed. The Republic is
5:13
on its knees. You've got
5:15
Jedi Master Kiv Trennis leading a desperate
5:18
assault against
5:18
an invading force. The odds against
5:20
her, but a Jedi always clings
5:23
to hope. Dun, dun, dun. Some
5:26
fun twists and turns coming with this one. Star Wars,
5:28
the High Republic, number one, beginning of phase three,
5:31
written by Kevin Scott with art by Ariel
5:33
Anandito and covers by the
5:35
goat Phil Nodoh coming this November. All
5:38
right, more comic stuff because Blade co-creator
5:40
Marv Wolfman is returning to Marvel Comics
5:42
horror in What If Dark? Tomb
5:44
of Dracula number one. I saw this come
5:46
through. I got hella freaking excited.
5:48
This is coming out in November. You got Marv
5:51
Wolfman along with artist David Cutler doing
5:53
a new What If Dark tale where
5:56
Blade gets transformed by
5:58
Dracula.
5:59
Of course, you've
6:02
got Marv Wolfman, who just did such
6:04
incredible work on the tomb of Dracula
6:06
years ago. He introduced Dracula to the
6:08
Marvel Universe, co-created Blade, and
6:11
the daughter of Dracula, Lilith Drake.
6:14
Now we're decades later from that, he's
6:16
coming back to this work with this
6:18
new story that asks the question,
6:20
What if the legendary Dracula
6:22
transformed Blade the Vampire Slayer into
6:26
a vampire? Look,
6:28
I'm a sucker for a good what if. I
6:30
love a good what if question. Everything
6:32
hinging on that stuff. This is
6:34
gonna do it. We got a beautiful
6:37
main cover by Giuseppe Comiccoli. What
6:39
if Dark Tomb of Dracula coming out November
6:41
8th? It's gonna be super
6:43
cool to have Marv Wolfman coming back to tell
6:46
more stories with these characters.
6:48
Now, do you like books? Do
6:50
you like art? How about art books?
6:53
Because the Art of Eternals is out now. If
6:55
you are a fan of Marvel Studios Eternals, you can
6:57
get the whole behind-the-scenes visual development smorgasbord
7:01
of the film in Marvel Studios
7:04
Eternals The Art of the Movie, which is on
7:06
sale now. It's got tons and tons of exclusive
7:08
concept artwork, in-depth interviews
7:11
with a creative team. It's
7:14
just gorgeous. Seeing the concept
7:16
art of Celestials,
7:18
The Eternals, sort of the big scale and
7:20
scope of that film
7:23
is really, really wonderful. You can get a preview of
7:25
the book over on Marvel.com, and
7:27
then you can check out your copy of Marvel
7:30
Studios Eternals The Art of the Movie from
7:32
wherever you get fine books.
7:36
Here's a piece of news that surprised
7:38
and delighted, I think, a ton of people
7:41
this week because Marvel Studios
7:43
WandaVision and Marvel Studios Loki season 1
7:46
coming to 4k Ultra HD
7:48
and Blu-ray! This is super
7:51
cool. These two awesome series from Marvel
7:53
Studios are going to be available on collector's edition 4k
7:56
Ultra HD and Blu-ray, which
7:59
is really cool. Everybody I think a lot more
8:01
people are getting into having physical tangible
8:04
media for the shows that they love and these
8:06
are gonna have really cool steelbook packaging
8:09
concept art cards and Never
8:12
before seen bonus features Those
8:14
are all wonderful reasons to go out and pick this up each
8:16
title will be available nationally on blu-ray
8:19
steelbook with cohesive and collectible
8:21
brand-new box art designed by
8:23
popular artist Attila Zarka and
8:25

8:28
and you won't have to wait very long for
8:30
either of these Marvel Studios Loki the complete first season
8:33
Releases September 26th of this
8:35
year and Marvel Studios Wanda vision the complete series
8:37

8:40
of them will be available for pre-order next
8:42
week. That's Monday, August 28th. Get ready Make
8:46
sure you secure your copies of those
8:49
You know what you should also do secure your copies
8:51
of some great new comic books There are some there
8:54
are a lot of really good books this week So new
8:56
comics on sale at your local comic shop or
8:59
through I find digital retailer
9:01
that you may may use I
9:04
Look, I'm alone. I'm picking five books.
9:07
Nobody can stop me Captain America finale
9:09
number one wraps up the big amazing
9:12
storyline by Jackson
9:14
Lansing and Colin Kelly and Carmen Carnero.
9:16
It is It's wonderful. It
9:19
just wraps things up It gives you a lot of Steve
9:21
and Bucky and other big feelings
9:24
It's got a kitty cat going wild
9:26
not the first time a kitty cat will go wild this
9:28
week. It is Terrific. We've
9:31
got Deadpool number 10 this week, which is
9:33
the final issue by
9:34
Alyssa Wong and Luigi Zagaria Which
9:37
is it's a little bit of a heartbreak
9:39
a little bit of a big rara Hoot
9:42
and holler and fun times. There's a
9:44
lot of really filthy like
9:46
Subtle jokes in here that I
9:49
absolutely loved it is laugh out loud
9:51
funny. It is a great romance book It is
9:53
exceptionally violent one of our favorites.
9:55
This tennis you run has been one of my all-time favorite
9:58
Deadpools I put it up there with some
9:59
Jerry Duggan written Deadpool. So that's
10:02
saying a lot. Then
10:04
another pick is Immortal Thor, number
10:07
one. This is a banger of
10:09
a first issue written by Al Ewing, with art
10:11
by Martin Coquillo and colors
10:13
by Matthew Wilson.
10:15
Al has a little letter at
10:17
the end about how he first got into
10:19
Thor as a kid, and he'd like to see Thor
10:22
smile, which I think is such a cool thing.
10:25
We've gotten all these broody,
10:28
dark, very intense Thor stories. This is
10:31
very intense. There's Thor fighting something
10:33
bigger than most things.
10:35
It's like giant planet-destroying
10:38
level type things. But he's
10:41
happy, and he's reveling in
10:43
the possibility of goodness, even
10:46
despite the face of
10:49
all the terror and the hardships he's come
10:51
across. There's some gorgeous big,
10:53
big double page spreads, full page
10:55
spreads by Martin in this issue.
10:59
If you liked Al Ewing's Immortal
11:01
Hulk, you are going to love Immortal
11:03
Thor. That is almost
11:06
a promise. I don't promise anything.
11:08
We've got Jean Grey, number one, which is one of
11:10
our fall of X titles. I heard much
11:13
love about Jean Grey from numerous people,
11:15
and it lived up to it. There's kind of a
11:18
sort of almost what if vibe
11:20
to it, but it's not a what if, and it
11:22
sort of goes in different directions and it opens
11:25
up a lot of questions. It is written by Louise
11:28
Simonson, one of the greats,
11:30
which is really cool. It's art by Bernard Chang,
11:32
colors by Marcelo Maiolo, and
11:35
it is beautiful. There's this double page spread early
11:37
in the book
11:38
where just scenes of Jean's life
11:40
that I stared at for quite a long
11:42
time. I don't want to give anything away
11:45
because this is a fall of X title, but this
11:47
does have a lot of twists and turns
11:50
in it. But yeah,
11:52
it's really good. Also, the new Jean Grey logo
11:54
that's on the cover is a banger.
11:57
It's really, really nice. Go check that out. The
11:59
big. surprise. The one that I did
12:01
not know was going to be one of my favorite
12:03
comics of the year is Marvel Unleashed
12:07
number one. If you are a fan
12:09
of the Pet Avengers, this is not the Pet Avengers,
12:12
but it
12:13
lives in that spirit. This is written
12:15
by Kyle Starks with art by Jesus Rivas
12:18
and colors by yeah, Nitro. And
12:20
this brings together a bunch of animal
12:24
characters. So in that Pet Avengers vibe,
12:27
going on an adventure, essentially. And
12:29
this issue opens with Lockjaw getting
12:32
captured by Craven the Hunter and it
12:34
spins out from there. We are introduced to a
12:36
new character named D-Dog.
12:38
I would do anything for D-Dog.
12:40
My favorite new character. She is incredible.
12:43
This book made me laugh out loud numerous
12:45
times. It literally made me cry.
12:47
I've lost two cats to
12:50
bad illnesses in the last year
12:53
in like two months. It
12:54
destroyed me.
12:56
But at the same time, I like one page before I was
12:58
laughing out loud. One page later I was laughing out
13:00
loud. It is everything
13:03
I want out of a wonderful comic.
13:05
It has got beautiful characters.
13:07
Redwing in here, the Falcon or Captain
13:11
America's Falcon is
13:15
incredible. Incredible.
13:17
And you've got Chewy, the Flurken,
13:19
you've got D-Dog, you've got a whole bunch of other characters.
13:22
Lucky, Pizza Dog, and many,
13:24
many more. Honestly, my
13:26
hands down my number one pick
13:28
of the week. Said it. Can't take it back. That's
13:32
that. That's too many picks of the week, but whatever.
13:35
Also, a couple other things to note. Contest
13:37
of Chaos continues in the Fantastic Four annual.
13:40
Invincible Iron Man has lots of Tony Stark and
13:42
Emma Frost, which sets up the big wedding stuff
13:44
coming really soon. And in Amazing Spider-Man,
13:47
stuff is popping off. If you are excited about
13:49
Craven and want to see
13:51
a different side of Spidey, that's the issue to
13:53
check out in Amazing Spider-Man number 32. So lots
13:55
of great comics this week, but we've
13:57
got to talk about another great comic coming.
13:59
next week very soon as we
14:02
talk with Aman Vellani and Sabir Perzada.
14:04
We'll be right back.
14:09

15:46
Hey, we're back. You are listening to This Week in
15:49
Marvel. I'm Ryan Penagos. I'm
15:51
alone this week, but not for long
15:53
because coming up, we have the co-writers
15:56
of the new Ms. Marvel, the new
15:58
mutant series, Emon Valas.
15:59
and Sabur Prazada. Let's talk
16:02
with them about getting into comics, writing
16:04
this new chapter for Kamala Khan and
16:06
so much more. ["The
16:11
New Mutant Hi,
16:17
I'm on. Hi. And Sabur
16:19
Prazada, hello, Sabur. Hello. Very
16:22
exciting. Got a lot to talk about. But first things first,
16:24
what are your Marvel origin stories? How
16:26
did you first become fans of the Marvel
16:29
characters? Iman, let's start with you.
16:31
Oh, god. Where
16:33
to begin? I mean, I have an older
16:35
brother, and he likes to take credit for
16:37
everything that I do and have interest in. But
16:40
I will not give him that pleasure. I
16:42
like to think I just strolled into a comic
16:44
bookstore one day and fell in love with
16:46
these characters. I mean, obviously, the MCU had a big part of
16:48
it, and I had a huge crush on Robert Downey
16:51
Jr. And I was like, I need more Iron
16:53
Man. And then I accidentally picked up Iron
16:55
Heart.
16:56
And then I fell in love with
16:58
Bendis. And then I saw Kamala in one
17:00
of the covers, and I fell in love with her.
17:03
And then I just read every single issue
17:05
I can get my hands on. I dressed up as her on
17:07
Halloween. That was like a
17:09
very big part of my life. And I protected this character
17:11
with everything I had because no one
17:14
knew who she was. And so,
17:16
yeah, now I'm here three years
17:18
later. And life is a little crazy. And
17:21
I get to write characters I fell in love with. So
17:24
how cool is that? It's frickin'
17:26
cool as heck. Cyber, how about you?
17:29
So the first comic
17:31
I ever read was a Marvel comic. And it was
17:33
a team up between Spider-Man, Storm, and
17:35
Luke Cage. And the villain
17:38
was named Smokescreen. And
17:40
the message of the comic was, don't smoke.
17:42
And I never have. It just really made an
17:44
impression on me. It was my introduction to both
17:47
Marvel and comics and was the beginning of a
17:49
lifelong obsession, which I sort of built
17:52
on when I visited my cousin in India
17:54
when they had rolling blackouts there in Mumbai. So
17:57
there was really nothing to do but read his comic
17:59
book.
17:59
He had all these amazing Silver
18:02
Age comics and so I dug into all
18:04
of those and then probably started
18:06
my own collection after that.
18:07
That is awesome. So in the 12 years
18:10
I've been doing this show, the 17 years
18:13
I've been at Marvel, you're the first person
18:15
who said their introduction to Marvel was
18:17
one of our PSA comics because we did a ton
18:20
of those. Spider-Man tries to tell
18:22
you not to like walk on the railroad tracks
18:24
or like eat glass or whatever it is. We
18:27
have a ton of those. So bless you for
18:29
bringing that to the show. I love that. So
18:33
you two are obviously huge fans and you're engulfed
18:35
and now you're in the Marvel universe working
18:37
on these characters in the comics. What
18:40
are you guys currently reading? What are your go-to books,
18:42
your
18:42
stories, the things that like, you know, either
18:44
it's a comfort thing or like you got to be
18:46
there to get it when a new issue comes out?
18:49
I mean, my like
18:52
comfort story is right now our Silver Surfer,
18:55
that whole parable
18:56
omnibus is like kind of awesome.
18:59
Heck yeah. Yeah. Yeah.
19:02
A lot of good Steve Engelhardt. Outside
19:04
of Marvel, Paper Girls started
19:07
that. Pretty good. Yeah. Real
19:10
good. For me, it's anything X-Men. I'm
19:12
there. Kind of always been there. That
19:14
was sort of the first major obsession I
19:16
had within the Marvel universe. So
19:19
I mean, I think you guys
19:21
are in a good spot then telling Ms.
19:23
Marvel's story as she enters mutant kind.
19:26
So I'm on you're obviously like a giant
19:28
fan of comics and of Marvel prior
19:31
to this professional experience and when you were talking about you were checking
19:33
out these books and your brother was that
19:35
fandom a solitary thing? Did you have
19:37
a broader community? Was it you and your brother? Was
19:40
it your family, your friends? Like
19:42
what is that building? Because obviously
19:44
comics is such an important part of our community. Yeah,
19:47
my brother never read any comics. So that's all
19:49
me. But no,
19:51
my high school is right across from a comic shop
19:53
and my parents would give me like $20 allowance
19:56
every month and so I would spend them on trades and
19:59
I don't know. I don't know, I just became
20:01
pals with the guy who runs the store
20:04
and he's been my biggest cheerleader. He's
20:06
the best and so enthusiastic
20:09
about me doing this and we have wonderful
20:11
chats about all things comics. And so
20:13
he was kind of catalyzed
20:16
a lot of my
20:18
comics journey for me and then
20:21
read it. But yeah,
20:23
that's a big part of it too, just online
20:25
discussions and kind of finding
20:29
people who enjoy the same books that I do because
20:31
no one in my real life
20:33
outside of the people at the comic book
20:35
store read comics and none
20:37
of my friends were into Marvel or Heroes
20:39
at all. And so I felt very
20:41
much like this was my own thing and it's the
20:43
only thing I would talk about in school and I know
20:46
people just hated me for that.
20:48
Like I would not shut up. And it
20:50
was like, I was like that person after watching any
20:52
MC movie like, did you realize, did
20:54
you notice, did you see Easter egg number 28? It's
20:58
the worst, but I think all that work
21:01
paid off now.
21:02
So yeah. Yeah. Like
21:04
I think about some of our people who are editing
21:06
our comics and people who are like vice
21:09
presidents in our publishing division. They started out
21:11
as interns. They started out as fans who were
21:14
the same as you, who are like finding the
21:16
tiniest little things and like digging
21:18
into those. So for anybody listening,
21:20
your career can start by just reading
21:23
the comics. It's a beautiful thing. Sabra
21:26
you've been working in writing in Hollywood for
21:28
a bit before writing comics for Marvel, but your overall
21:30
comic work goes back well before
21:32
that, right?
21:33
Yeah. So I actually tried my
21:35
hand at breaking into comics writing before
21:37
I tried TV writing or anything else. So
21:40
I was finding artists online
21:42
that I could hire to sort of work with and illustrate
21:45
some of my scripts and try to put
21:47
pitches together to publishers that accepted
21:50
that type of creator own work. And
21:53
it took a long time to get those things together. I was trying
21:55
to pay my way through it by being on like a writer's
21:57
assistant salary when I was working.
21:59
in Hollywood. And so, as you can
22:02
imagine, it didn't pay very well, so I could
22:04
only really afford to pay an artist to do one page a month.
22:07
So my first graphic novel was a 66-page graphic
22:09
novel. It took me years and years to make. So
22:12
it was a long time coming. And then as I started
22:14
to find work with Marvel Studios, all
22:17
the stars sort of aligned to sort of open up the door
22:19
to show the independent work that I had done
22:21
to folks at Marvel Comics. And that opened the door for me
22:24
to write some comics for Marvel.
22:25
Wait, what was your first book? It
22:28
was a graphic novel that I
22:30
published digitally on Comixology. It was called Violence.
22:33
And it was about a magic flower
22:35
that whoever you give it to will fall in love
22:37
with you. And
22:40
then dark, bad things may happen from there. And
22:42
so that's sort of what it was. And very
22:44
few people read it, but one of them happened
22:46
to be an editor at Marvel Comics. And that was
22:48
the start of my relationship with Marvel. BRB,
22:50
going to go find it right now. So
22:53
as someone new to writing Comix,
22:56
what sort of challenges did you face? How much did
22:58
you talk to Sabra about like the
23:01
just like getting started on the page?
23:04
Yeah,
23:04
I mean, I was
23:06
terrified. I had to do a lot of
23:08
I wasn't okay. The X-Men part of things
23:10
scared me the most. I
23:12
did not read a lot of X-Men in high school. In fact, I
23:14
did not read any X-Men in high school. And
23:17
when I first approached Sana about writing
23:19
a comic,
23:20
and we got the go ahead to do
23:22
it, she calls me before my meeting
23:24
with Marvel editor. Oh, she's like, by the way, they're going to tell you they're
23:27
killing Miss Marvel, which is coming back as a mutant. You have
23:29
to deal with the aftermath. And I was like,
23:31
no, I screamed into a pillow and
23:34
just picked up Jonathan Hickman's X-books. And
23:37
that was my textbook for this entire
23:39
process, because we we basically
23:41
started I think it was beginning of March, Sabra
23:44
came on board. And then by the end of the
23:47
month, we had to have a draft ready.
23:49
So it was a very quick turnaround.
23:51
And I was just absorbing as much content as
23:53
possible. I literally had the 90s cartoon
23:56
playing in the background while reading Hickman's round. And then
23:58
on my laptop, I had Grant Morrison's new X-Men.
23:59
and I was just absorbing as much information
24:02
as possible. And then we also had, the
24:05
entire ex office is a great resource. Jerry
24:07
Duggan was awesome in kind of like answering any
24:09
questions that we had. But
24:12
yeah, I mean, I'm
24:13
very grateful
24:15
to Savar. He's a fantastic writer and easily
24:18
one of the most generous collaborators. I think, you
24:20
know, he really gave me the upper hand in
24:23
kind of driving the narrative and getting all my wishes
24:25
answered. We literally made a wish list at
24:27
the beginning of this whole thing of like, everything
24:30
we wanted to see, jokes we wanted to have, stuff
24:33
we wanted to tell. And so that was kind of fun. And
24:36
anytime we came across any speed bombs
24:38
or continuity issues, he would be the first one
24:40
with like 20 ideas on how to, you know, solve
24:43
the problems and
24:44
get to tell the story that we wanted to tell the way
24:46
we wanted to tell it. And, you know, I probably
24:49
learned the most from him, not even directly,
24:51
but like through your emails, dude, like, communicates
24:56
and integrates editorial notes and just pages
24:58
coherently and effectively and communicates
25:01
opinions if we don't necessarily agree with anything.
25:03
So I probably would have been a lot more reluctant
25:06
for this whole thing if I didn't have a solid
25:08
co-writer because it was scary.
25:10
Like I didn't even realize they were gonna say yes to letting
25:12
me do this in the first place. So.
25:16
I forgot about that wish list. Now I wanna go back
25:18
and look at how many of those things can we cross off. I know.
25:20
We're still editing number four. We can go back on it. So
25:23
we have another couple more in there. I was gonna ask
25:25
how that wish list is fair, but also I was thinking, you know,
25:27
like, having the co-writer starting that way is
25:30
such a wonderful thing to do. I think
25:32
about Grant. Grant Morrison and Mark Miller
25:34
started out as co-writers on a lot of stuff and then
25:36
look at them now. You think about Jonathan Hickman
25:39
worked as co-writer for a lot of people like Matt
25:42
Fraction and Brubei, like a lot of some of the
25:44
greatest comic book writers of this generation had
25:47
to work with someone else to figure out the
25:49
nuts and bolts of this. So good
25:52
job, you too.
25:52
That's it. Yeah, I just wanna say Imana has
25:54
been a total pro at this. You would never guess
25:57
this is her first comic. Like she really understands
25:59
the language.
25:59
of comics and how to use this medium
26:02
to tell a story effectively. So
26:04
I'm really excited for the world to see what a fantastic
26:06
writer she is.
26:07
Ah shucks. I mean I really wish
26:09
I had a crash course at the beginning of all this of
26:11
like because a comic book script
26:13
is also so different from a movie script like you're
26:16
writing page one panel one describe everything
26:18
that's in the panel you know how are you gonna
26:20
split your dialogue between what panels to tell
26:22
the story effectively it's like
26:24
so much and I think like I've definitely
26:26
progressed from issue one to now issue four. And
26:29
our poor assistant editor Lauren Amaro she
26:31
like she inherits the different formatting
26:33
that Iman uses that I use and she's got to
26:35
put it all together and make sense out of it
26:38
before it gets turned around to the artist art team
26:40
so that's not an easy task. Thank
26:42
you Lauren. Let's talk
26:44
about that art team you have amazing artists in
26:46
Carlos Gomez and Adam Gorham
26:49
the two of them and then and they're working
26:51
on the book are they taking any specific parts of each
26:53
issue how is that working with having two
26:55
artists
26:56
yes they are taking specific parts it's
26:58
it's actually story driven why each
27:00
of them is doing their respective
27:02
sections are we allowed to talk about why what do you
27:04
think I don't know how
27:06
about how about we'll
27:09
maybe we'll continue our conversation in
27:12
another part after the first issue releases
27:14
and then we can talk a little bit
27:16
about how their art splits.
27:19
Wonderful. That's a tease for everybody
27:21
to come back for our second part of this
27:23
conversation next week.
27:26
So as we get ready to go on
27:28
to thinking about the the next part before
27:30
we do that I got to ask though
27:32
the first time you saw
27:35
art come in Iman that is based
27:38
on something you'd written and helped create
27:40
four Marvel comics what's that feeling like what's
27:42
going through your head paint that scene a little bit.
27:45
It's probably the coolest
27:47
part of the whole thing receiving sketches
27:49
from both our artists like it's
27:51
it's so fascinating to see how they respond to the material
27:54
that we give them and interpret it in their
27:56
work like
27:57
sometimes it's super validating as a writer
27:59
when when they draw a page exactly like how
28:01
I pictured it. And other times it's more
28:03
of a learning opportunity, I would call it, to
28:06
make sure I clarify details in my panel descriptions
28:08
in a way that's like,
28:10
you know, more comprehensive for the artist. And
28:12
I mean, I'm just like unlocking so
28:14
many new communication skills throughout
28:16
this entire thing. So I love
28:18
it. It's great.
28:20
But yeah, it's super surreal. Like
28:23
just seeing the cover art come in and then seeing
28:25
like our last names on the corner, like I
28:28
freaked out and I still can't get over
28:30
it. So
28:31
yeah. I should have warned you, it gets very addictive
28:33
to like start your day that way and wake up and
28:35
see what the artist has put in your inbox.
28:38
It's my favorite part of my day.
28:40
And I wake up at noon, so I get to
28:42
see a lot of emails in the morning. Oh
28:45
God. It's great. But you know
28:47
what? We're gonna talk a little bit more about
28:49
Ms. Marvel, the new mutant, her costume,
28:52
the status quo she's coming into in
28:54
this book in our next episode.
28:56
Thank you both so much. Thank you.
28:59
Thank you. Yes,
29:02
that was Iman Valani and Sabra Perzada.
29:05
You heard it there on the chat. We
29:08
are going to be talking with them again next
29:10
week because Ms. Marvel, the new
29:13
mutant written by them is
29:15
coming out and we're gonna chat with them a little
29:17
bit more about the book. Maybe go a little
29:19
behind the scenes on that first issue. So make
29:22
sure you pick up Ms. Marvel, the new mutant, number one
29:24
out August 30th, and then come back for
29:26
us next week to talk about it with the
29:29
co-writers. It is now time
29:31
for the community section, AKA this week,
29:34
messages and thinking
29:36
about next week. Now again, we are gonna have
29:38
Iman Valani and Sabra
29:41
Perzada on to talk about Ms. Marvel, the new
29:43
mutant, but we are also
29:45
gonna be talking with Teenie Howard, who
29:48
is the writer of our big X-Men
29:50
story for Marvel Move. Again,
29:53
is this interactive-ish
29:56
storytelling, audio experience
29:59
where you can see the movie
29:59
you will be part of a whole bunch of stories
30:02
featuring Marvel superheroes and supervillains
30:04
and action and adventure. And
30:06
you get to go on these cool
30:08
stories. We were going to have
30:12
Thor and Loki. We'll have Daredevil,
30:14
Hulk. We're going to have the X-Men
30:17
and more. And so I was thinking,
30:20
which Marvel characters would you like
30:22
to go on a run or walk with? Or
30:24
you can answer, whose fitness goals do you aspire
30:27
to? So maybe you don't necessarily
30:29
like to run or
30:29
walk, or maybe you like to cycle.
30:32
Maybe you like to just get swole
30:35
and clang
30:37
and bang a bit. But
30:39
you can answer that either way. Really, we just want
30:41
you to get fit with us with Marvel Move.
30:43
It's a lot of fun. I
30:46
think I'm torn because I
30:48
hear all of our stories in Marvel Move.
30:51
I absolutely love our Thor and Loki. I think they
30:53
are the most fun. But I also
30:56
love being told by Wolverine to start running,
30:58
bub. It is
31:00
very inspirational to
31:02
have Wolverine in your ears, basically
31:05
picking you up by the scruff of your neck and getting
31:07
you to keep running because sentinels are basically
31:10
blasting at your feet. But
31:13
Jasmine, our producer, has just reminded me of
31:15
the correct answer, which is D-Dog,
31:18
star of the new Marvel Unleashed book. Holy
31:20
moly, that would be so fun. Anyway, those
31:23
are some answers for me. Wolverine, Loki,
31:25
Thor, and D-Dog. Let us
31:27
know which Marvel characters you would like to go on a run
31:30
or walk
31:30
with, whose fitness goals you want
31:32
to aspire to in the Marvel universe. You
31:34
can tweet your answers using hashtag ThisWeekInMarvel.
31:37
Email them to twimpodcast.marvel.com
31:39
or send a message to our Facebook page at facebook.com
31:42
slash ThisWeekInMarvel.
31:44
Please make sure to tell us it is OK
31:47
to read TWIM on the show so we can
31:49
just do that. We can read it on
31:51
the show. Let's get into answers for last
31:53
week because our question of the week from last week was,
31:56
with Ms. Marvel back and part of the X-Men, what
31:58
Marvel characters do you want to see?
31:59
her team up with. First up is
32:02
braces and glasses at Bay Area Kidstorm
32:04
who said my Ms. Marvel team up would be with
32:07
her and the Hulk. She would make the solid walls
32:09
and Hulk would smash them with people behind them. Oh
32:11
the fun with that. That's a great answer
32:13
braces and glasses that's I think more
32:15
MCU style which totally acceptable
32:18
and we love it and that
32:20
really would be a ton of fun. I also would
32:22
love to see her with She-Hulk
32:24
like MCU Ms. Marvel and MCU
32:27
She-Hulk.
32:29
I'm just I have to stop thinking about that or else I will
32:31
get distracted. Let's get back to the comments.
32:33
DolphinPants at DolphinPants underscore tweeted
32:36
I would love to have Kamala find herself accidentally
32:39
joining X-Force and then somehow
32:41
convincing them to stop their ways to try a more
32:43
peaceful approach. Holy cow DolphinPants
32:46
that would be so fun to like
32:48
try to convince none of them to stab
32:50
everyone to try to convince Kamala trying
32:52
to convince Omega Red not to use
32:55
his death powers on someone.
32:57
I need it. Alan
32:59
John Wilkinson at Cassius335 tweeted Molly Hayes
33:01
any excuse to see
33:04
what the runaways are up to to be honest yes
33:06
yes yes yes yes and yes.
33:09
Karras Pollard at A. Karras Pollard
33:11
tweeted I have a perfect answer Namor
33:14
they're both mutants but with other strong communities
33:16
slash responsibilities and heaven knows
33:19
Namor could do with a bit of Ms. Marvel to guide
33:22
him. You
33:22
know what?
33:23
Karras has the perfect answer.
33:26
As usual thanks Karras. We got
33:28
an email from Paul Warren. Paul said I
33:30
would pair Ms. Marvel with Sabertooth reluctantly
33:33
bringing out his paternal side that we saw
33:35
in Age of Apocalypse and Exiles.
33:38
I also thought about the Avengers squad question from
33:40
a couple weeks back instead of the big three of Cap Stark
33:42
and Thor.
33:43
Old slash future Dorian Green, Iron
33:45
Lad and future Danny Cage with Mjolnir.
33:48
Then they'd pick up Victor Mauncha, Hasmet, Gabby
33:50
Kinney, Sherry Wong, Superior
33:52
Spider-Man and Titania. Basically
33:55
you're doing an Avengers forever type story
33:57
here and I am
33:59
all for it, Paul. Very,
34:02
very good. We got a message
34:04
to Facebook from Ricky. Ricky said,
34:07
I'm going to cheat a little bit here since I don't know a
34:09
lot about the many characters in the comics.
34:12
I'm going to go with MCU Yelena Belova
34:14
because I think that Ms. Marvel, being a super
34:16
hyper teenager who gets overexcited
34:18
by just about anything, would be hilarious to
34:20
see working alongside Yelena. Yelena
34:23
would say all her funny little comments while being slightly
34:26
annoyed of Kamala's giddiness. Plus, now
34:28
Yelena could be the big sister slash mentor
34:30
type that Kamala could benefit from. Thank
34:33
you, Ricky.
34:33
I like that. And you know what? We love answers
34:35
that cover the MCU or the comics or whatever.
34:39
And as mentioned earlier in the show, our
34:41
Marvel Insider code for this episode is
34:43
mutant, M-U-T-A-N-T. Head
34:46
over to marvel.com slash insider.
34:48
You'll see the activity pages
34:50
and just find the This Week in Marvel activity.
34:53
Put that in there, and you are good
34:55
to go. Please tell your friends, listen to the show,
34:58
and also, you
35:00
know, do all the other activities there. You can get
35:02
points that you can use for all kinds of stuff
35:05
through Marvel Insider. Of course, Marvel Insider
35:07
is open to US residents.
35:09
Only 18 plus, you know the deal. And
35:13
that is it for us this
35:15
week. Action-packed next week, going to be even
35:18
bigger. Thank you all for sticking with us. And
35:20
this episode of This Week in Marvel is produced by Jasmine
35:22
Estrada, Isabel Robertson, and Ryan Penagos. Our
35:24
senior manager, audio production and development, is
35:26
Brad Barton. Jill DeBoff is our director of audio.
35:29
And this is her last week, so thank you to Jill.
35:31
This is also last week to former This Week in
35:33
Marvel producer, Zachary Goldberg. Thank you to
35:36
Zachary. Best
35:38
of luck to both of them as they go on to new
35:40
endeavors. Special thanks to
35:43
D-Dog for making
35:46
the Marvel Universe a better place. Truly, everyone,
35:49
honestly, go read Marvel Unleashed
35:52
right now. I'm Ryan, and this
35:54
is Marvel, your universe.
