1:08

Hello, Marvelites. You're listening

1:10

to This Week in Marvel, Episode Number 622. I'm

1:13

Ryan Penagos, a.k.a. Agent M.

1:15

And I'm Angelique Brochet. What's going

1:17

on, Agent M? You're listening to This

1:20

Week in Marvel, the official Marvel podcast

1:22

where we get to talk about all

1:24

things. Games and comics and books and toys

1:26

and movies and TV and

1:29

whatever we're excited about. That's

1:30

right. This week, got

1:32

a lot to get excited about, some fun stuff. But

1:34

later on in the show, we're going to be talking to writer,

1:36

artist, and creator of the Mutz comic

1:38

strip Patrick McDonald about the latest

1:41

Marvel Arts graphic novel. That's our collaboration

1:44

with Abrams. Wonderful, wonderful stuff. It

1:46

is called The Superhero's Journey. You can

1:48

hear that full interview in just a little while.

1:51

I'm

1:51

excited. Also, we're going to be talking about

1:54

a Marvel move. That's right. There are

1:56

brand new episodes of Marvel Move

1:58

that are available.

1:59

Trappin'.

5:59

to

6:01

why each card is what it is.

6:03

So if you're into Terra, you're

6:05

gonna love these. If you're not into Terra, do

6:07

it, get into it. It's on sale

6:10

right now, and what I love is that it takes

6:12

Marvel's most iconic heroes,

6:15

which is a lot of iconic heroes, and

6:17

villains, and they're gonna come from

6:19

the pages of the comic into the world

6:21

of Tarot

6:23

in this enchanting take on a

6:25

traditional 78-card tarot deck.

6:27

Now, as everybody knows, each

6:30

deck has got a amazing

6:33

author and artist. This one is

6:35

written by Sydney Barwick and illustrated

6:37

by Lily McDonald. The Marvel

6:40

Tarot deck and guidebook re-imagines

6:42

your favorite Marvel characters as tarot

6:45

archetypes, with characters

6:47

ranging from Ms. Marvel to Daredevil

6:49

to Black Panther and more, which

6:51

is so cool, because when you think about the idea

6:54

of the major and minor arcana

6:58

in the different deck, it's amazing, like

7:01

this deck is really stunning. It

7:03

comes with its own instructional book with explanations

7:06

of each card's meaning and

7:08

unique tarot spreads, because

7:10

as you know,

7:10

depending on if you get it

7:13

on the upside,

7:14

or it's upside

7:15

down or the right side up, like this

7:18

is kind of

7:20

a mystical science, one would say, and

7:22

this officially licensed tarot deck

7:25

is packaged in a sturdy, goal-folded

7:27

decorative gift box, and honestly,

7:30

I'm gonna get one for myself, but

7:32

it's pretty much the perfect gift

7:35

for anyone who loves

7:37

Marvel and anyone who loves

7:39

tarot.

7:41

I have no, like tarot is a thing I

7:43

don't

7:43

know anything about.

7:44

Really, I have a deck. We can totally

7:47

go do this. Yeah, yeah, when you visit, bring it up.

7:49

I think we should actually do, I think we should do

7:51

a reading when we get the deck.

7:53

Oh, Ryan, we should get the deck and do it. Look,

7:56

I am so geeked

7:58

over this,

7:59

There's been

8:01

so many beautiful decks. And the thing about

8:03

tarot is that people who read

8:05

tarot, the deck is like really calls

8:07

to them. It means something to them and

8:10

they kind of put a lot of energy into it. So

8:13

can you just imagine a Marvel fan who's

8:17

also a tarot fan?

8:18

Yeah, I'm looking at her.

8:20

Hi, it's me.

8:23

I'm very

8:25

excited. This is going to be dope. Folks who definitely go

8:27

out. The Marvel Tarot Deck and Guidebook

8:29

is on sale right now wherever

8:32

you purchase

8:32

books. Go get it. All right, let's

8:34

move on, talk about the new

8:37

episode that we have this week for the Women of

8:39

Marvel podcast. It's episode four all

8:41

about Ghost Spider, all

8:44

about Gwen Stacy really. Our

8:46

hosts, Ellie and Preeti talk about how

8:48

incredible she is with writer Shauna

8:51

McGuire. Yay, Shauna, love Shauna. Just

8:53

Jody Nishajima and folks from Marvel

8:55

Spidey and his amazing friends. Ooh, I

8:58

gotta get, we just gotta listen to this one with

9:00

my daughter. She loves Ghosty. Plus

9:03

they explore how Gwen's hobbies like drumming

9:05

and dancing help her be a better superhero.

9:08

I love that. Also like one,

9:11

shout out to Shauna McGuire because the way she loves

9:13

Gwen Stacy is real and

9:16

I am so excited because

9:18

we're going back

9:21

to the future. We're getting more Miguel

9:23

O'Hara, we're getting much,

9:25

much more of him. So there's a new five part

9:27

horror series releasing weekly throughout

9:29

January 2024 by writer Steve

9:32

Orlando and art by Dev Malia Pramonic,

9:35

Michael Dowling, Jason Murr,

9:38

Chris Campania and Stefano

9:41

Raphael. Miguel

9:43

teams up with the 2099 versions

9:45

of Blade at Moon Knight

9:48

among others to battle 2099 versions

9:51

of Marvel Zombie, Dracula,

9:53

Werewolf by Nod, Terror Incorporated

9:56

and Man Thing. So

9:59

good.

9:59

So good. So

10:03

instead of celebrating the new year, we're going

10:05

to ring in the new year

10:07

with some horror and I'm okay with that.

10:10

I really am. This is going

10:12

to be good. Some creepy stuff is good

10:14

all year round. We're very much okay with

10:17

it. We're also okay with Spider-Man India

10:19

and issue four is out this week and

10:21

we have a special guest here on the show

10:24

talk about how this run of Spider-Man

10:26

came to be. It's writer Nikesh

10:28

Shukla.

10:29

So Spider-Man India came to be

10:32

because of the

10:34

kindness of strangers on the internet. I'm

10:37

a novelist and a screenwriter and

10:39

I was just in a really bad place during

10:42

the pandemic, but I'm also like a lifelong

10:44

Spider-Man reader and

10:47

I never thought it'd be a job. I never thought I

10:50

could ever write a Spider-Man comic. And

10:52

one day when I just had

10:54

fallen out of love with writing and being a public

10:57

figure, I just tweeted one day, I want

11:01

to write a Spider-Man comic. And

11:03

Jamie McElvey, the awesome artist

11:05

and writer Jamie McElvey, he got in touch.

11:08

He DM'd me and said, do you want this to happen?

11:10

I can make this happen for you. And I was really

11:12

skeptical at the time. I was like, Jamie,

11:14

that's very kind, but like whoomst

11:17

at math was going to take any

11:20

interest in some rando

11:22

from the UK writing a Spider-Man

11:24

comic. And Jamie was

11:26

like, look dude, let me just put you in touch. And

11:28

when he put me in touch with Nick Lowe, the

11:31

executive editor at Marvel of

11:33

all things Spidey, I thought,

11:35

you know what? Nick probably has a lot of people

11:37

in his inbox saying, hello,

11:38

please Mr. Lowe, please

11:40

may I write a Spider-Man comic? And

11:44

I thought,

11:45

you know what? I'm going to just pitch you

11:47

something. I'm going to pitch you a specific idea

11:49

and I'm going to pitch you something that A, you

11:51

probably don't get pitched very often and B,

11:54

I would like to personally see. And

11:56

so I just messaged him and said, it's

11:59

been over the years. 20 years since we saw Pavitha

12:01

Prabhakaras while in India actually has

12:04

a storyline. We don't know anything

12:06

about this dude, please can I do another mini-series

12:09

and bring him up to date a little bit.

12:11

And he replied and was like, you know what, funny enough,

12:13

this feels like a good time to do this. And

12:15

for those who are fans of Pavitha Prabhakar's

12:18

new series that's been going on, be sure to look

12:20

out for issue number five of Spider-Man India

12:22

hitting stands in October

12:24

as he dons a brand new costume

12:27

which was designed by my

12:29

friend Dwali.

12:31

All right, so you know, I love some good Spider-Man,

12:33

but

12:35

Spider-Man's

12:36

Spidey's Spider-Peeble? Spider-Man.

12:38

Spider's Man. I like

12:41

it. Like Captain's America, you have Spider's

12:43

Man.

12:44

Captain's America. All

12:46

right, I learned something new every- Thank you, Ryan

12:48

Panagas. You're welcome. We are launching

12:50

a giant size celebration for the 50th

12:52

anniversary of giant size

12:55

storytelling. For those

12:57

who like, love the very

13:00

special, amazing, and sometimes

13:02

iconic giant size comics,

13:07

it's coming to you. So for those who

13:09

don't know, throughout Marvel's historic bronze

13:11

age of the 1970s, there were tales

13:15

so ginormous, so

13:17

grandiose, adventures so big

13:20

in battles so large

13:22

that they could only be told in a special

13:25

giant size issue.

13:28

Now 50 years later, giant size is

13:30

back and more pivotal than ever because

13:32

we got a lot of big stories. And

13:34

throughout 2024, Marvel will celebrate the milestone

13:37

anniversary of the very first giant

13:40

size comic with an all new spectacular

13:43

set of one shots featuring your favorite

13:45

heroes, starting with January's giant

13:48

size Spider-Man, a number one

13:51

by the one, the only, the

13:53

zigzag, Cody Ziegler

13:55

with art by Yvonne Coiello. And

13:58

that's all because in December, Marvel will be back. Marvel proudly

14:01

represents the very

14:03

first

14:04

giant-sized title ever,

14:06

giant-sized superstars number one

14:09

in a special facsimile edition. You can

14:11

experience one of the all-time great Marvel

14:13

comic books from industry legends

14:16

Jerry Conway and Rich Buckler.

14:17

Yeah, so that one

14:20

is Hulk versus Thing in a Fight

14:22

at Madison Square Garden.

14:24

It's a classic. It's super fun.

14:27

So it's literally giant-sized is what you're telling everybody.

14:29

That was the first one. But contextually,

14:31

if

14:32

both don't, because we don't use giant-sized too

14:34

much anymore, but like those 70s giant-sized

14:37

issues, that was like giant-sized X-Men was the all-new,

14:40

all-different thing. Everything.

14:43

Because

14:43

you knew when you saw giant-sized, something

14:47

was about to go down.

14:49

Yeah. There was the wedding

14:51

of Vision and Scarlet Witch,

14:53

Spider-Man versus Dracula, the

14:55

first appearances of Multiple Man, Lilith,

14:58

Korvac, Tigra. So

15:01

many things happened in giant-sized issues. It's so

15:03

cool. And then this new one that

15:05

Zig and Iban are doing

15:07

is going to have Miles versus

15:10

Venom, aka Dylan Brock, in a big

15:13

story that feels like it's going to

15:15

mean a lot. So those

15:17

comics, let's go start in January. But what

15:19

about this week? We have plenty

15:22

of new comics out this week, and let's start off with our

15:24

picks of the week. First

15:26

up, Blade number three.

15:28

You had me at Blade.

15:29

I know. Brian Hill wrote

15:32

it with gorgeous art by Elena Casagrande

15:35

and Valentina Pinti. And it's

15:38

Blade fighting like this tentacle

15:40

demon monster thing

15:43

and just throwing quips, being

15:46

badass, walking away while the thing

15:48

explodes behind him. Just

15:50

the coolest dude ever. Being Eric.

15:53

Yeah. This is the Blade that

15:55

we need. There's

15:59

also mystical stuff and like ninjas

16:01

and all kinds of wild stuff and a very perturbed

16:05

Stephen Strange. It is, this book is so good.

16:07

It's so, so freaking good. I mean,

16:10

is there ever a time that Stephen Strange

16:12

is not perturbed?

16:13

I guess not. I

16:16

feel like he just doesn't like being bothered.

16:18

And so he's gonna fix it. But like,

16:21

why did you break it?

16:23

Fair. There.

16:24

Then we've

16:26

got Invincible Iron Man number 10, which we talked about a

16:28

bunch last week. Oh man. Now it's out.

16:30

Written by Jerry Duggan, art by Juan Fregari. It

16:34

is The Wedding of Tony Stark and Emma

16:36

Frost. And it all happens.

16:39

But there's a lot of lock, a lot going

16:41

on. Juan's art in here. So

16:43

good. The way he draws like the,

16:47

the kind of attraction,

16:50

but really just hatred between

16:52

Tony and Emma. Revulsion. The

16:54

word you're looking for is revulsion. Yeah.

16:57

He draws a mean Sandman too. Sandman

16:59

shows up in here. It's a cool way. Pha

17:02

Long just being a jerk. He got Wilson Fisk

17:05

in this one. There's a lot of machinations, a lot

17:07

of like building of what's to come

17:09

and really seeing how, how

17:11

the hell Iron Man gets out of his

17:13

predicament and the X-Men get out of theirs. This

17:15

feels like such a crucial part to it all. There's

17:18

a part in the issue where Tony's like, she's

17:20

gonna break my heart. Even though they're

17:23

not like in it to like for realsies,

17:25

he's like, she's still gonna break my heart.

17:27

I mean, because. Tony, Tony, Tony.

17:30

It's

17:30

Emma. And also I think deep

17:32

down inside Tony's just a hopeless romantic

17:34

who tries to play it off because

17:36

you know, he's got

17:39

daddy issues.

17:40

He's got a lot of issues. Third

17:43

pick of the week was Ultimate Invasion number

17:45

four wraps up this limited series

17:47

by Jonathan Hickman and Brian Hitch. I

17:50

mean, come on, it opens

17:52

up a lot of questions. It opens up a ton

17:54

of answers. It sets us forward in November, we're

17:56

going to have that big Ultimate Universe one

17:59

shot and then. we talked about recently.

18:01

We know that we're going to be

18:03

a national hero comic con. Really, we're

18:05

going to get some details about the actual

18:07

new ultimate comics that are coming out,

18:09

Spider-Man and other stuff. So

18:13

get excited for all that. This one is

18:15

big, like it is a big

18:18

juicy boy of a comic. It

18:20

is long. It's Kang versus

18:22

the Maker. There's giant battles. It's

18:24

huge and wide screen. It is Brian Hitch

18:28

reminding us he's one of the greatest

18:30

of all time as an artist. It

18:32

is. It's cool. It's fun.

18:34

And it's like there's a lot of thinky bits

18:39

throughout all this too, as I like to call what Jonathan

18:42

does. Thinky bits.

18:42

Wow, thinky bits. You mean exposition?

18:45

No, just like thinky bits.

18:47

All right, coming up is our conversation

18:49

with Patrick McDonald about the latest

18:52

Marvel Arts graphic novel, The Superheroes

18:55

Journey.

18:55

We'll be right back.

19:19

Hey,

19:23

I'm Prince EA, the host of the Sauna Sessions

19:25

podcast. Deep dive with me and the

19:39

legendary Tony Robbins. You got to think about

19:41

what is controlling the quality of your life.

19:43

And the answer is your emotions. The

19:45

meanings you give things. If I'm being abused,

19:48

you're in one feeling. This person is challenging

19:51

me. That's a different feeling. This person is coaching

19:53

me. I'm not even going to say that. But this person is loving me. That's a

19:55

different feeling. This is happening because God

19:57

is punishing me. This is happening because

19:59

God is a bad This is happening because God

20:01

is challenging me. This promise here is a

20:03

gift from God. Unravel empowerment,

20:06

resilience, and the keys to

20:08

personal growth. Listen to

20:16

Whether you're making the same breakfast that you

20:18

have every day or baking a cake for an extra

20:20

special day, eggs are a staple in our

20:22

diets. Eggland's best eggs

20:25

are nutritionally

20:25

superior to ordinary eggs, containing

20:28

six times more vitamin D and double

20:30

the omega-3s. Not only are

20:32

they better for you, but Eggland's best eggs

20:34

taste better too. There's a reason that they're

20:36

America's number one eggs. Visit

20:39

egglandsbest.com

20:39

for additional information

20:41

and delicious recipes.

20:49

All right, y'all, you are listening to This Week in

20:51

Marvel. I'm Ryan Penagos.

20:53

And I'm Angelique Roche. Yeah.

20:56

All right. So, Angelique, you

20:58

got to talk to Patrick McDonald. Tell us a little

21:00

bit about this.

21:01

Okay. So, I love people

21:04

who love comics. I don't know if that is a secret,

21:06

but Patrick is just so

21:09

delightful, so fun, and

21:11

truly understands the

21:13

relatability of characters. And

21:16

so, he is the latest

21:19

book coming from Marvel

21:21

Arts,

21:21

which is a collaboration between Abrams

21:24

and Marvel. And it is just

21:26

so cool that he's been able to bring together

21:29

his love of comics, his love of

21:31

being a cartoonist, the relatability

21:33

of this, but also his love of Stan Lee

21:35

and Jack Kirby into

21:37

this book. I mean, there's collages.

21:40

There are pieces

21:42

that he actually painted in real

21:44

life that are in there. It's dope.

21:47

That's awesome.

21:49

So, let's hear that interview right now.

21:54

So, I feel like you touch a little

21:56

bit about your own journey

21:58

into loving Marvel.

21:59

Marvel throughout the book.

22:02

Without spoiling the book and

22:05

what readers are gonna get the chance to see

22:07

once they pick it up, can you give

22:09

me a little bit or tell us a little bit about

22:11

how you got into

22:12

the Marvel Universe?

22:14

Yeah, yeah, no, I don't think it'll spoil the book. Although

22:17

the book is a lot about my

22:19

childhood and my love

22:22

affair with Marvel Comics. But

22:24

for me, you know, I had two

22:27

brothers and a sister and

22:30

we came from a kind of an artistic family.

22:32

My mom and dad met at Cooper Union Art

22:34

School so we were always encouraged to

22:37

make art. And

22:40

I was a big comic strip fan. I loved

22:42

peanuts but then as I got a little older we

22:44

started buying comic books. It was

22:47

probably my older brother that bought the first Marvel

22:49

comic book and I think it was a Captain

22:51

America. And

22:53

I do remember my, it's

22:55

funny because I had an older brother, he

22:58

was in charge of what me and my younger

23:00

brother could collect. So he

23:03

gave me the X-Men

23:05

which I was very grateful for because

23:07

the X-Men were my was my comic and I

23:10

loved the X-Men. I mean we shared, we

23:12

all got to read each other's books but the

23:14

one that I collected and paid for was the X-Men.

23:16

So my first X-Men

23:18

comic was X-Men number 11.

23:21

I was very young and

23:23

probably didn't understand the story. It's a really

23:26

strange great story with the stranger. And

23:28

then after that was the juggernaut.

23:31

And you know so it's

23:33

just

23:34

great great Kirby stuff.

23:37

So

23:38

yeah we were all hooked. We used to just

23:40

doodle our own comics, draw

23:42

all the Marvel comics. It

23:46

was a big big thing in our house.

23:49

And you and your brother started

23:51

your own mini comic book imprint right?

23:52

Envoy Productions.

23:59

Yeah we were so in love. with the Marvel Comics that we

24:01

all drew that we thought we'd put

24:03

our own line of comics and it

24:05

was online paper and

24:08

each one of us made up different characters

24:10

and we would do like little three-page stories

24:13

and staple them

24:14

and collect them. We weren't reading

24:17

each other's comics and

24:19

I had a character named Changeable Man

24:21

who would could change his body into different

24:24

things and

24:26

yeah and actually

24:30

I was even thinking of calling the book Changeable Man

24:33

about how comics change us but

24:35

we went with this superhero's journey instead.

24:37

How

24:38

does it feel for you having this

24:40

out in the world? I'm

24:43

done. I can't say this has been the most fun

24:45

book I've ever worked on and I'm really excited

24:48

by it. So

24:49

for you you've

24:51

been in the field. Yeah

24:52

for a while. You've done some other work.

24:54

People always kind

24:59

of throw different titles around illustrator,

25:02

cartoonist, letterer, penciler. You've

25:04

had this journey

25:07

as a cartoonist.

25:10

For those who may not understand that

25:12

subtle difference in

25:14

that because they do cross over a lot. How

25:17

would you describe your work?

25:20

I tell stories with words

25:22

and pictures

25:26

and hopefully stories that are

25:28

uplifting. I try

25:30

to promote compassion

25:33

and empathy

25:34

and and

25:36

you ever put a smile on somebody's

25:38

face. Basically

25:40

trying to give back all the joy that

25:42

comics I read as a kid. Peanuts

25:45

was so important to me and

25:48

Jack Kirby, Marvel comics were

25:50

important to me. So I feel like if I can give back

25:52

any of the joy I got from reading those I'm

25:55

doing my job.

25:56

I love it. And so

25:58

on this journey because you've had your own journey. to

26:01

the superheroes journey. You know,

26:04

how do you get from work like Mutz

26:07

to this?

26:10

Like for people who are like

26:12

actually in the field trying to like

26:14

navigate it

26:15

as a career.

26:17

Well, I would have to, you know,

26:20

I did a 25th anniversary

26:23

Mutz art book with Abrams, and

26:25

I was trying to figure out what do I do after

26:28

that? What's the next book?

26:30

And Charlie Kochman from Abrams

26:33

comic arts

26:34

approached me and he let me know that

26:37

he had a new line of books curated

26:39

by Alex Ross called Marvel

26:42

Arts, and they were looking to do new things.

26:45

And he was just curious if I want to play with

26:47

the Marvel characters.

26:49

And it took me no

26:52

time at all that says, are you kidding? Sure. That

26:54

was a

26:55

dream come true. They get to play with the Marvel

26:57

characters. So, you

27:00

know, originally Charlie thought maybe I would do a

27:02

children's book also, but I thought no,

27:04

I'd rather do a graphic novel.

27:07

And I wasn't

27:09

sure what the story was going to be, but I knew I wanted

27:12

to do as many characters as I could.

27:15

And I just wanted

27:17

to capture

27:19

the fun and energy of those early books,

27:22

and also capture the wonder

27:24

and love I had for those early books. So I knew

27:26

it might be partly memoir. And I

27:28

also thought it would be really, really fun to

27:32

have my art play along with Stan

27:35

Lee and Jack Kirby and Steve Ditko. So

27:37

I wasn't sure where it was going to go, but I knew I was

27:39

going to try to mash all that up. You

27:41

know, the books I grew up, those 60 books didn't

27:44

have a lot of humor in them and

27:46

fantasy. And

27:48

I thought I could be

27:50

part of that world or try to be part of that world.

27:53

You know, for a lot of people who don't know

27:56

about Marvel Arts, it

27:58

is that opportunity to give

27:59

folks that may not

28:02

be doing your week to week. They may not

28:04

be doing She-Hulk or

28:07

they may have a different perspective

28:09

or a different story and to get them

28:11

in but

28:12

you know I can't look over the fact you're like and

28:14

Alex Ross is the editor.

28:16

Okay, you

28:18

get overlooked that seems

28:20

like a dream come true.

28:22

Yeah, it is. I

28:27

mean

28:27

his first book

28:29

was amazing and Full

28:32

Circle. I

28:34

have it on my bookshelf. Yeah

28:37

and so this one I'm proud to be the

28:39

next in line. This one comes out

28:41

in September 26 and will be the next

28:44

one and I kind

28:47

of know some of the other ones that are coming

28:49

out. I don't think I'm allowed to say what they are but I

28:51

think it's gonna be an amazing line of books.

28:54

Yeah, they're doing some really

28:55

fun stuff

28:58

over there and I can't wait and again

29:01

kind of this idea is like this book does explore

29:03

the characters but also

29:05

in a wide range of styles right. There's

29:08

these gorgeous slash pages. Talk

29:13

to me a little bit about how

29:16

do you attack this? Like how do you

29:18

decide what feels

29:20

right and giving it that kind of diversity

29:23

or were

29:25

you just did you just kick it off and just like

29:27

kept going? Like what was your attack plan?

29:30

That is a lot in

29:32

the Marvel Universe to dive

29:34

into. I think

29:37

it's what you just said. I just kicked

29:39

it off and kept on going. You

29:43

know I

29:45

had a basic idea what one of my inspirations

29:48

was the Fantastic Four annual

29:50

three where Reed and Sue get married

29:54

which as a kid was just like the greatest

29:56

book in the world because it had every Marvel character

29:59

you could imagine.

29:59

than every villain you could imagine. It was

30:02

just like a treat for the eyes. The

30:04

great thing about wedding is

30:07

everybody that

30:09

you didn't want comes to the world. So

30:14

I mean that kind of inspired the

30:17

book and

30:19

I knew I wanted

30:21

my drawings to have the same energy

30:24

and excitement I had as drawing as a kid.

30:26

So I really didn't pencil

30:28

anything. I just went for all the

30:30

art, just went for it and

30:33

combining it with the Jack Kirby stuff

30:36

and the Steve Ditko stuff and the Don Heck

30:38

stuff. I was a little concerned

30:40

how that was going to work but somehow I

30:43

think it flows. I mean you see my

30:45

stuff and then there's stuff but you just, you

30:48

know the story keeps it going and

30:50

even though the characters

30:53

aren't drawing the same, I think there's

30:55

still this like fun energy that you just

30:57

believe in the characters and you just go with them.

31:00

And then there's some

31:02

big paintings I included in the book.

31:05

During the pandemic I started

31:07

painting and I did some Marvel

31:09

paintings and you know

31:11

a few of them just fit in perfectly with

31:14

the story. So it's a combination

31:17

of you know the Marvel, the beautiful

31:19

work of Kirby and Ditko and

31:21

my

31:22

drawings of my paintings and a lot

31:24

of collage stuff. You know Kirby

31:26

was great with collages so I had to throw

31:28

in a collage here and there and

31:32

somehow it all works.

31:33

At least I think it all works.

31:35

Well and I love that because I

31:36

am a photographer so I always love this

31:39

idea that

31:42

mixed media gives texture

31:45

to the work.

31:46

And I love

31:48

the way you mentioned that. You brought in this

31:51

mitch mash up

31:53

of a lot of different styles are

31:56

all kind of like

31:57

in there but that's what creates

31:59

the

31:59

beauty of the art, right? It turns

32:02

into this

32:02

whole different

32:03

compositions. You know, there's

32:05

gonna be somebody out there who's like, so are these from

32:08

the original panels? Are these copies?

32:11

Did we cut books? Like what? Like what

32:13

were...

32:13

You

32:16

know, I would have loved to actually use

32:18

the original comics, but I think that would have taken

32:20

so long to do. I got

32:23

all the files from Marvel

32:25

and it's the original art. And

32:27

you know, the crazy thing is

32:29

the dialogue is like 99%

32:32

of it is the original dialogue. I think

32:34

if I've changed five words and

32:37

that's true of all of it and

32:39

the art, you know, the art I might

32:42

have gotten rid of something in the background

32:44

that was confusing, but the book's

32:46

really bad art verbatim and somehow

32:50

was able to weave my story with their

32:52

stories without really changing anything.

32:54

So I hope people do realize that their reading

32:56

Stan Lee. Every time you see the

32:59

old comics, you're reading pure Stan Lee

33:02

and you're looking at pure Jack Kirby and

33:04

Steve Ditko. I barely changed anything.

33:08

I used to paint in college and ever since I've been

33:10

doing a daily comic strip, it's hard to

33:12

find time to do outside projects.

33:16

But during COVID, there was plenty of time and

33:18

I started painting again and I started

33:21

just doing, you know, during

33:23

a little daily comic strip every day, you

33:25

know, like three little panels and pen

33:27

and ink. So I really wanted

33:29

to explore working bigger and sloppier

33:32

and just having fun. So I started

33:34

with abstract paintings, but then I started adding some.

33:36

I could help myself. I actually started

33:39

with adding Ernie Bushmiller's

33:41

Nancy into all my paintings. And

33:44

then I started adding Marvel characters.

33:46

And then I started doing my kind

33:48

of abstract versions of actual

33:51

Jack Kirby panels and covers.

33:53

And I just

33:54

just love doing them. And

33:56

then Charlie came along and asked

33:59

me to try this. And I said,

34:01

man, I'd love to figure out a way to get

34:03

some. And Charlie knew my paintings and really liked

34:05

my paintings. So, you know,

34:07

because I was doing a story about kind

34:10

of heroes fighting each other, I did a

34:12

lot of paintings with heroes fighting each other.

34:15

So I think we got a total

34:17

of six or seven of them in the book. And

34:20

I think they're nice. They're

34:22

most of them are done as double page spreads.

34:24

So they're nice little parts

34:27

of book where you could just stop and just be

34:29

there with them for a while.

34:33

And they really helped tell the

34:35

story. I

34:36

love it. Well, and one of the things

34:39

I think is

34:40

really dope,

34:43

for lack of a better word about

34:45

the book,

34:45

is that there's a marvel of it all,

34:47

right? You take these big

34:50

themes, and yet you make them so

34:52

small and tangible

34:54

in

34:55

your other work. And

34:58

now talk to me a little bit about what

35:01

your goal is, taking that background

35:04

of what you do and what you have

35:06

done in all of your different work previously.

35:10

How do you take that into this book, into

35:12

the superhero's journey? And

35:14

what do you hope folks take away?

35:17

Well, you know,

35:20

in all my work, I think it's a lot

35:22

about compassion and empathy

35:25

and love. I

35:27

think that's the undercurrent of all the Marvel

35:29

superhero books. And

35:34

I had just finished the book with the Dalai Lama.

35:37

So spirituality was definitely

35:39

on my brain. And

35:41

so I knew it was going to be

35:43

a spiritual journey with the watcher. What

35:46

a great character, you know, that

35:49

he watches and doesn't interfere with.

35:51

I mean, I think, again,

35:53

Jack Kirby was an amazing

35:56

person. And the book starts with

35:58

a powerful Jack Kirby. quote,

36:00

and ends with a powerful Jack Kirby quote.

36:03

And those two quotes, I knew were going

36:05

to be in the book, they were kind of where the Kickstarter

36:08

for the book. And those two books

36:10

are powerful spiritual quotes. I

36:12

knew the book would have a spiritual

36:15

theme. I mean, it was a superhero story.

36:17

I don't want to get people the wrong impression. It's

36:20

still a fun superhero story

36:22

with plenty of action. But,

36:25

you know, I say

36:28

it's finding the spirit, the super

36:30

being in the soul. It's a spiritual journey

36:32

and trying to find the super being that is

36:35

in the soul.

36:37

I love it. I can't wait for folks

36:39

to get their hands on this. It

36:42

is out right now. So make sure you go pick

36:44

up your copy. And thank you so

36:46

much, Patrick, for taking this time

36:47

to talk. Thank you. Thank you,

36:50

thank you.

36:53

That was, of course, Patrick McDonald. You can

36:56

pick up your copy of the latest Marvel arts graphic

36:58

novel, The Super Hero's Journey today,

37:00

right now at your local comic shop, your bookstore

37:03

or wherever books are sold.

37:05

Go check it out.

37:07

Yeah. And now

37:09

it is time for Ryan and I's favorite

37:11

parts

37:12

of the show.

37:14

This week in messages.

37:19

All right. So like we start

37:21

off every single week, we are going to give

37:23

you the question of the

37:26

week. That's right. We're going to give you

37:28

next week's question before we get

37:30

to your answers. So next week

37:32

on the show, we have

37:35

writer

37:36

Jonathan Hickman. That's right. Jonathan

37:39

Hickman is going to be on the show to talk God's,

37:42

maybe a little ultimate universe, potentially

37:45

soccer.

37:45

Look, I every time I've talked to Jonathan

37:48

soccer will like eventually come into it because he

37:50

just loves soccer or he'll be like doing

37:52

an interview and also watching soccer. So I

37:54

love your favorite

37:55

team. Now I need to know. I don't know. I

37:57

don't know. It's not men's Saturday night and it doesn't matter

37:59

anyway. So we shall see

38:01

and Ryan's gonna find out

38:04

who his favorite team is. So I will either

38:08

love Jonathan Moore or just slightly

38:10

less. The

38:11

South Carolina

38:14

Bucketheads.

38:16

Wow. Now I

38:18

want that as a comic book. But next week

38:21

is also the launch of Marvel

38:23

Studios. Loki season two is

38:25

gonna be streaming exclusively on

38:27

Disney Plus Thursday, October

38:29

5th.

38:31

So ready.

38:33

Yeah, so I was thinking our question of the week could

38:35

be more Loki themed.

38:38

So what or who or

38:40

when are you most excited

38:42

to see in this new

38:44

season of Loki? It's hard for

38:46

me to answer this question properly, but Angelique,

38:49

what about you?

38:50

Well, since it's on the internet, I guess I can say

38:52

what I'm most excited about. I'm

38:55

really excited about the Chicago

38:56

World Series. Oh God,

38:59

I'm really excited to see

39:01

a World's Fair and

39:04

for people who may not even know what a World's

39:06

Fair is anymore

39:08

to get to see how

39:11

amazing and important they were.

39:13

What, who or where, when do you

39:15

wanna see? I think it's just a very

39:17

broad thing because there's so much

39:19

in here.

39:21

Yeah,

39:23

there's a lot of wild stuff

39:25

in this season,

39:26

as you'd imagine.

39:27

Episode one of season two launches

39:29

Thursday, October 5th, exclusively on Disney

39:31

Plus. Now you can tweet your answers to

39:34

us using hashtag This Week in Marvel. Email

39:36

them to twimpodcast.marvel.com. Send

39:38

a message to our Facebook page at facebook.com

39:40

slash This Week in Marvel. Please, as

39:42

always, make sure to tell us it is okay to read

39:45

Twim on the show so we could read it on

39:47

the show.

39:48

All right, so let's get started. We have a question

39:51

from last week. Last week's question

39:53

of the week was, which Marvel character would you like to

39:55

get the comic strip treatment?

39:57

And y'all had some

39:58

answers. Yeah, there were a bunch of.

39:59

Kit answers which I grabbed from Twitter at

40:02

Jessica Drew SW said Jessica

40:04

drew the original spider woman that could be

40:07

super fun I would see a comic

40:09

strip featuring her that

40:10

would be great

40:11

scruffy-looking nerd at scruffy

40:13

underscore nerd Deadpool Deadpool

40:17

that's it no that was it no reading

40:20

just Deadpool

40:20

boom just like that then

40:24

overlord of underscore evils just said

40:26

Ben Yurick which that's a cool idea

40:28

like a little journalistic vibe

40:31

to it that could be super fun

40:33

I like it and then we got sore at Orlando

40:35

eight zero zero two zero nine two eight

40:38

Angela

40:41

oh I was like oh that's a cool

40:43

one someone said

40:45

a strip about the adventures of Captain America

40:48

shield okay

40:49

40:52

40:53

41:22

in and said hi to him crew in response

41:25

to this week's question about the comic strip treatment

41:27

for a Marvel character respectfully

41:29

there is only one right answer Garfield

41:32

with Chewie or goose in

41:34

the MCU devouring lasagna

41:36

with his flurken tentacles throwing

41:38

Cosmo as

41:39

Odie and Jeff the Landshark as

41:42

Nirmal who is

41:42

always getting mailed somewhere else maybe

41:45

have Doreen Green as the John Arbuckle

41:47

character taking care of them all love the

41:50

show thank you Ben we

41:52

love that email that is truly

41:55

a very inspired I

41:56

love both Nirmal and

41:58

Jeff the Landshark and an equal

42:00

amount

42:01

of squee, it's ridiculous.

42:04

Whether in person or remote, open

43:17

communication with your doctor is key to managing

43:20

any condition, including heart failure.

43:22

How have you been feeling?

43:23

Um, I'm okay. Both

43:26

are great options to continue having open

43:28

conversations with your doctor about how you're feeling.

43:30

I've had less energy. And when you speak

43:33

openly with your doctor, they're better equipped to help.
