In the second half of the 20th century,
0:02
California not only seemed home to America's highest
0:04
concentration of cults, but also to
0:06
most of the nation's serial killers. We've
0:08
already covered so many of them here. Randy,
0:11
the scorecard killer Kraft, Richard,
0:13
the Night Stalker Ramirez, Ed,
0:15
the coed killer Kemper, MOTHER! Lonnie
0:18
David Franklin Jr., aka the
0:20
Grim Sleeper, the freeway killer William Bonin
0:23
old Billy Gutter Balls, the Golden State
0:25
Killer Joseph James D'Angelo, the dating
0:27
game killer Rodney Alcala and many, many
0:29
others. One lesser known Southern
0:32
California serial killer, with a higher victim count
0:34
than many of the monsters I just mentioned,
0:37
was a man whose names most of you are probably
0:39
unfamiliar with, William Lester Suff.
0:42
Suff targeted women in and around the
0:44
Southern California cities of Riverside and Lake
0:46
Elzenor. Investigators believe he started
0:48
killing women in 1986, not
0:50
too long after serving almost ten years in prison
0:52
in Texas for a murder over there. Earlier
0:55
his arrest in January of 1992, Suff was
0:57
connected to nineteen murders. Some
1:00
suspect that the number could
1:02
be much higher. Many
1:04
believe that Suff is virtually unknown due to
1:06
his victim demographic. Local
1:08
sex workers, many of whom, had criminal records
1:11
and were struggling with addiction. Bill
1:13
picked up these vulnerable women in his van
1:15
and murdered them soon afterwards. In
1:18
several cases, he remained at the crime scene to mutilate
1:20
his victims. By cutting their breasts
1:22
off, posing them in sexual positions, always
1:25
making sure to expose needle marks on their
1:27
inner arms, others replacing dumpster enclosures
1:29
as if the killer were telling the police exactly
1:31
what he thought of these women. To
1:34
most, for the entirety of his murder spree,
1:36
Bill Suff seemed like a normal guy. He
1:39
worked for Riverside County as a stock clerk, helpfully
1:41
delivered office supplies to law enforcement
1:43
members of the very task force
1:45
created to catch him. Sociopaths
1:48
can truly hide their real natures from
1:50
just about anybody. Behind
1:52
the mask of a sweet kind man was the
1:54
real Bill, a violent predator who
1:56
harbored a hatred of sex workers, hatred
1:59
of women in general, and a really a man
2:01
who is incredibly abusive to his wives and his own
2:03
children. Today we'll discuss life and
2:05
crimes of Mr. Suf, a man filled with
2:07
an incredible amount of rage, rage that only
2:10
his victims, children, or those unlucky enough to
2:12
date or marry him ever saw on
2:14
another true crime edition, but the first 2024 true
2:17
crime edition of time
2:20
sucks. This is Michael McDonald and you're listening
2:22
to time suck. Happy
2:37
Monday, meat sacks. Welcome to another installment of
2:39
the cult of the curious. I'm
2:41
Dan Cummins. Suck nasty. You're one and only
2:43
true twin flame. Don't let anybody tell you
2:45
different. It's guaranteed. A
2:48
divine masculine confused mind alignment
2:50
process intern. And you
2:52
are listening to time suck. Hail
2:54
Nimrod, hail this Fina. Praise be to good boy
2:56
Bojangles and glory be to triple M and no
2:59
announcements today. How about them apples? Uh,
3:02
ready to hear about a real, real naughty boy. And
3:04
I'm not just talking about some guys who just won't
3:06
go pee pee on a potty. Like a good boy.
3:08
This guy's a true fucking monster. Seems
3:11
like something snapped in this dude during his
3:13
teen years and he just
3:15
kept getting worse and worse and worse until they
3:17
finally pulled him away for good. Let's
3:19
meet him. Here's
3:26
how we're breaking down the sad, scary story of
3:29
the riverside killer today, very much a
3:31
forgotten killer from the late eighties and
3:33
early nineties. Despite committing crimes, just as savage
3:35
as much more notorious murders. I'll
3:38
start off with a brief overview of riverside
3:40
County, the central location of today's story, followed
3:42
by a full timeline of William stuff's life
3:44
and crimes, including the investigation that led to
3:46
his arrest and the trial that followed also
3:49
quick heads up. If randomly you
3:51
love to feast on a bowl of chili,
3:53
some hot chili while you listen
3:55
to time sucks, you might want to skip your
3:57
chili routine today. That'll make sense
3:59
before. this is all over. So
4:02
where is Riverside County? Riverside
4:04
County is actually located in hell.
4:07
It's literally one of the worst places to live on earth. If
4:10
not the very worst place, at least if
4:12
you're a light worker like myself. With the
4:14
current population of roughly 2.5 million people,
4:17
over 2.4 million of them are
4:19
confirmed as state level three or
4:21
higher demon zombies. The highest
4:23
concentration of demonic zombies in the US
4:25
and possibly the world. Not
4:27
all of the world's countries are taking
4:30
Chad Daybells very important true warnings regarding
4:32
demon zombie infestation seriously. So unfortunately we
4:34
don't have like you know demon zombie
4:36
census data from all the places we
4:38
should. And so there's a small chance some
4:41
other place you know could be worse. By
4:43
doubt. Based on current demon
4:45
zombie numbers Riverside makes Sodom and Gomorrah looks
4:47
like Jerusalem and Bethlehem. There's actually
4:49
a popular saying regarding all of
4:51
this in Riverside. Throw an
4:53
orange in any direction and a demon is bound
4:56
to catch it and they'll never give it back.
4:58
And now you have one less orange than you
5:00
had before you threw it and that's not like
5:02
the worst thing ever but it's still kind of
5:04
a bummer if you really think about it because
5:06
that might be the tastiest orange you were ever
5:08
gonna have. Now for the rest of your life
5:11
every time you eat another tasty orange you're probably
5:13
gonna think yes orange is tasty but I wonder
5:15
if it's as tasty as the one I accidentally
5:17
threw that stupid demon to Riverside. I
5:20
didn't say it was a good thing. It's just a popular one.
5:22
Riverside is also known for having a lot of really
5:25
bad too long why couldn't someone have edited that down
5:27
a bit. Sains. And I'm
5:29
of course about a bunch of nonsense. A
5:31
bunch of gibberish. Riverside County is located in
5:33
southern California east of Anaheim with
5:36
a current population of about 2.5 million people. That
5:38
part was true. It is the
5:40
fourth most populated county in California the
5:42
10th most populated county in the US despite
5:45
the eastern half of the county being
5:47
pretty sparsely populated with most
5:50
of the mystical Joshua Tree National Park falling
5:52
inside the county lines. Riverside
5:54
County is part of an area known
5:56
as southern California's inland empire defined
5:59
as a metropolitan area. polypen area or region inland
6:01
of an adjacent to coastal
6:04
Southern California. The county
6:06
spans from the east end of the greater Los Angeles
6:08
area all the way to the Arizona border, Coachella
6:11
of music festival fame and
6:13
Palm Springs of Gulf Spa
6:16
Resort and mid-century modern architecture
6:18
fame located in the
6:20
Coachella Valley region of Riverside County. This
6:22
county seat is the city of Riverside, 12th
6:25
most populous city in California, 59th
6:27
most populous city in the US with approximately 315,000
6:29
residents. Riverside also a principal city
6:34
in the nation's 13th largest metropolitan
6:36
statistical area. The Riverside
6:38
San Bernardino Ontario MSA with
6:41
a population of almost exactly 4.6 million people
6:44
as of the last census ranking just ahead
6:46
of Detroit, Michigan and just behind San Francisco.
6:49
Their MSA's city is named for
6:51
its location beside the Santa Ana River and the county
6:54
is named after the city. The
6:56
county's European origins date back to the
6:58
very end of the 18th century when
7:00
Spaniards first established the Mission San Luis
7:03
Rey de Francia at an indigenous village
7:05
in Tomesco June 12th 1798. Current church
7:07
built in 1815 the third church built
7:12
at that location. After the signing
7:14
of the Treaty of Cordoba in 1821 Mexico gained
7:16
independence from Spain a little over
7:18
a decade later after the Mexican government
7:21
passed the Mexican secularization act of 1833
7:23
California officials
7:25
were desecularized and became government
7:28
property and then a series
7:30
of land grants were issued throughout California.
7:33
Several massive ranches were established in Riverside County in the late
7:35
1830s 1840s. They no longer their town
7:39
of La Placita founded in modern-day
7:41
North Riverside in 1843. It was the first real
7:44
Mexican town of the area and for
7:46
a few years the largest colonial settlement
7:48
between LA and New Mexico. In
7:51
1848 the US took over California winning
7:53
it in the Mexican-American War. California's
7:56
first 27 counties established in 1850
7:58
same year California became became a state, Riverside
8:01
not amongst them, originally being part of
8:03
both LA and San Diego counties, later
8:06
being part of San Bernardino and San Diego
8:08
counties. California's 18th Governor,
8:10
Henry Markham, signed a measure to create
8:12
Riverside County, March 11th, 1893,
8:15
established with land from both San Bernardino and
8:17
San Diego counties, and the county
8:19
has expanded a bit since its initial creation. 57
8:23
years after its inception in 1950,
8:26
when Bill the Riverside Killer's self was born, the
8:28
county looks a lot different than it does today. Population
8:31
only around 170,000. County
8:34
population would not surpass a million people until 1990. Thanks
8:38
to so many less people, the area still
8:40
looked a lot like a bunch of different towns
8:42
and cities with orange groves inside them and
8:44
in between them, as opposed
8:46
to the western half of the county
8:48
today being best categorized as miles and
8:50
miles of congested urban sprawl. Miles
8:53
and miles of a steady rotation of residential
8:56
areas and commercial areas and industrial areas,
8:59
one city blending largely, indistinguishably
9:01
into the next. Speaking
9:04
of orange groves, Riverside County historically
9:06
probably most famous for being the
9:08
center of California's orange-based massive agricultural
9:10
boom of the late 19th and
9:13
early 20th centuries. Riverside
9:15
the city now has 24 nationally registered
9:17
historic sites, more than 100 city landmarks
9:20
that commemorate the city's citrus industry history.
9:23
In 1873, the US Department of Agriculture
9:25
forever changed the history of Southern California
9:27
when William Saunders, a horticulturalist
9:30
for the department, sent two small
9:32
Brazilian naval orange trees to
9:34
friend and Riverside resident, Eliza
9:36
Tibbetts, trying to seduce
9:38
her with some sweet, sweet fruit. Those
9:42
trees grown in ideal soil and weather
9:44
conditions produced an especially sweet and flavorful
9:46
winter harvest fruit. In
9:48
less than a decade, by 1882, there
9:50
were more than half a million citrus trees in California,
9:53
and almost half of those were in the area
9:55
around Riverside. The development of
9:57
refrigerated railroad cards, more modern irrigation
9:59
systems, made Riverside the richest city
10:01
in all of America in
10:03
terms of per capita income by 1895. It
10:07
was an amazing place to live. Ideal weather,
10:10
beautiful mountainous desert topography, some big
10:12
lakes, flowing rivers, lots of fresh
10:14
fruit, a lot of good jobs to go
10:16
around for a lot of people. Four decades
10:18
later in 1939, the city was still a prominent
10:20
place to live. The first screening of
10:22
Gone with the Wind took place at the
10:25
Riverside Fox Theater, one of the nicest, most opulent theaters
10:27
on the west coast at that time. Today,
10:30
still looked at as a nice place to live
10:32
by many, but not as opulent. No
10:34
longer a real prominent city. When I
10:36
lived in Santa Monica, talks of Riverside, you
10:39
know, usually framed as being shithole. I
10:41
don't think it actually is. Some LA snobbery going on
10:43
there for sure, but definitely no longer considered like, you
10:45
know, a place where the cool kids are living. Looked
10:48
at more as a place where, you know, you can live
10:50
if you want to be able to actually buy a house,
10:52
with a yard, for the kids, if you can't afford to
10:54
do that in the LA area. Western
10:57
half of the county, where today's story largely takes
10:59
place, now largely associated
11:01
with Southern California traffic. A lot
11:03
of people commuting west for work, and
11:06
also poor air quality due to high levels of
11:08
air pollution. So much smog, actually one of the
11:10
worst counties in all of America, as
11:13
rated by the American Lung Association in 2020. It's
11:16
a very racially mixed area. About
11:18
half the residents of Riverside, the city,
11:20
for example, identifies Hispanic, with 80% of
11:22
those residents identifying as Mexican
11:25
or Mexican-American, according to 2010 census data.
11:27
About 7% identify as Black, another
11:29
7% Asian, over half identify as
11:34
white, with some of those residents also
11:36
identifying as Hispanic. Today's
11:38
story takes place largely in two cities in Riverside
11:40
County, Lake Elsinore and
11:42
Riverside. The city of Lake
11:45
Elsinore, first established in 1888. The main
11:48
feature of the city is the lake it's
11:50
named after, largest natural lake in Southern California.
11:52
About 3,000 acres full of large
11:55
mouth bass, channel catfish, bluegill,
11:57
crappie, few rainbow trout, and other types
11:59
of panda. and fish. Lake Elsinore
12:01
started off as a little resort lake town, but steadily grew
12:03
into a city of 70,000 residents
12:06
roughly today. Back in 1950, when
12:08
South was born, just over 2,000 people
12:11
live there. And the city of Riverside, back when Bill was born
12:13
in 1950, had only about
12:15
47,000 people. So the whole area,
12:18
way more rural than today. Lots
12:20
of orange groves, good places to
12:22
hide bodies, still inside the city
12:24
limits. Poverty rate in Riverside,
12:26
12.9% compared
12:28
to a national average of 12.4%. 2019 per capita income rate,
12:30
$43,072, compared to
12:35
a national average of $56,490. So no more poverty on average than the
12:37
rest of the nation, but
12:42
also not as many affluent people on
12:44
average as the rest of the country. Very
12:46
middle class. Riverside, not
12:48
a hub, not a major hub for a
12:50
bunch of huge employers for some big economic
12:53
sector like big tech, pharmaceuticals or
12:55
something. Seems like it was also
12:57
very middle class when Bill grew up in the area. And
13:00
again, still very middle class when he went on
13:02
his murder spree many years later. Crime-wise,
13:05
sources were all over the place
13:07
when it comes to comparing Riverside crime rates with
13:09
the overall national rates. In
13:12
general, it seems like Riverside County has a slightly
13:14
higher rate of violent crime than the national average,
13:16
quite a bit more property crime than
13:18
the national average, but also quite a few less
13:20
murders than the national average. Bill
13:23
Suff would do his best to boost those stats
13:26
in 1989, 1990 and 1991. And
13:29
then just a tiny bit more now about the
13:31
Riverside area before jumping into Billy Boy's timeline. Journalist
13:34
David Lore, who wrote about Bill's crimes, had this
13:36
to say about him or about the county,
13:39
Riverside is a burgeoning urban sprawl,
13:42
which boasts a UC campus, Mount
13:44
Rubido and a county population growth
13:46
unmatched in any nearby region. Those
13:49
who have traveled through the area often compare the
13:51
trek towards the industrial area to that of the
13:53
entrance to Dante seven levels of health. A
13:56
thick veil of smog rests over the district and the
13:58
permeating smell which emanates the area. from many
14:00
of the local factories is something most visitors
14:02
care not to describe. So,
14:05
I guess my hell description,
14:07
earlier not that far off. At
14:09
least not according to David Lohr's assessment of the
14:11
area. I'm guessing he lives in the LA
14:13
area. Again, I don't think it's that bad at all. I think it's
14:16
actually a pretty nice place. So
14:19
why have you, unless you are a major true crime
14:21
fan who likes exploring lesser known killers, likely
14:23
never heard of Bill Suff? Well,
14:25
like a lot of serial killers who only target sex workers,
14:29
his crimes, they didn't really make waves. For
14:31
him, they didn't really make waves in Riverside when
14:34
they were happening. Back when Billy
14:36
was killing, because of who he targeted, the
14:39
overall population didn't seem all
14:41
that bothered about the murders. Not
14:44
a surplus of empathy back
14:46
in Riverside in the late 80s and early 90s. The
14:49
area sadly reflected a lot of the nation's collective
14:51
attitude towards sex workers at the time. They
14:54
were terribly immoral women who, you know, if they didn't
14:56
want to get murdered, well, they should
14:58
have had the decency to not sell their ass on
15:00
the street. And if they, you know, chose to do
15:02
that, well, then I guess they
15:04
deserved whatever terrible consequences awaited them. That really was
15:06
the attitude. Sex workers
15:09
were seen as subhuman in
15:11
a lot of places. Definitely seems like
15:13
they were viewed that way in Riverside. A
15:15
blight upon the moral fabric of the area,
15:17
a disease that needed treatment. And, you know,
15:19
one way to treat it was to remove it.
15:23
One restaurateur, Pat
15:25
Lovett, owner of Granny's Kitchen – it
15:27
was a downtown restaurant in Riverside at the time – interviewed
15:30
by a reporter for the LA Times for an article that came
15:32
out on February 8, 1991, said, if
15:36
it were a bunch of housewives getting
15:38
killed, or little kids, then
15:40
everyone would be running around with a gun like
15:42
vigilantes. But if it's prostitutes, people
15:45
figure it's no concern of theirs. You know,
15:47
it's just sex workers, so, you know, fuck them. If
15:50
they didn't want to die, well, they should have just
15:52
went back to school and made some of themselves, right?
15:54
They're not my daughters, sisters or moms, so why
15:56
should I care? Same
15:58
article. The sentiment echoed. by an unnamed
16:00
clerk at Elsinore office products. When
16:03
asked if she was worried about the murders and informed
16:05
of the new killing, she said, there was
16:07
another one? I'm not real concerned. It's
16:10
not the kind of people I have anything to do with. So I
16:12
really haven't given him much thought. Jesus.
16:14
And then one more for this article, the worst one.
16:17
A real estate agent who declined to give
16:19
their name because I'm guessing, you know, they
16:21
knew, they were being a huge piece of shit
16:23
when they said this, they noted that the
16:25
murders might scare away a few buyers or who
16:27
knows, maybe you'd make the area even more appealing.
16:30
Might be a good thing. He or she said,
16:32
but probably he. It's
16:34
not like we have a Hillside Strangler here. We have a
16:37
health nut. He's just cleaning up the
16:39
town a little. Jesus
16:41
Christ. He actually fucking said that in
16:43
the newspaper. Ah, look at
16:45
that. It's a killer. I see him as a health nut.
16:48
Just cleaning up the streets a little bit, right? He's not killing
16:50
people. He's killing sex workers. That's
16:54
the kind of comment I would feel like a killer would read
16:56
and use it as fuel to commit more
16:58
killings, right? I'm doing a good thing. Just
17:01
cleaning up the streets. What, why
17:03
are they trying to arrest me? I should be giving a
17:05
fucking medal. Key to the city, throwing a parade. Billsoft
17:09
knew that the majority of people living in
17:11
and around Riverside held real negative feelings about
17:13
sex workers. He spoke often during
17:16
his killing spree about how terrible they were. And
17:19
I bet he almost found a real receptive audience, you
17:21
know, for common teammate. Now
17:23
let's meet the man known as the
17:25
Riverside Killer or the Riverside Prostitute Killer
17:27
or the Lake Elsinore Killer in
17:29
the Times like Timeline after just a quick note
17:31
about names. Our main source
17:33
for the timeline and the best source out there about William South
17:35
from what we can plow is the
17:38
Riverside Killer written by Christine Kiers,
17:41
former Riverside detective and actually a member of
17:43
the task force that took Bill down. And
17:46
then true crime author, Dennis St. Pierre, and this book was
17:48
published in 1996. The
17:50
author has changed a lot of people's names for
17:53
privacy reasons, including the name of Billsoft's first wife,
17:55
the names of some roommates. We actually got his
17:57
wife's name for some newspaper articles. Changed
17:59
the name. We have names for most of the family members, you
18:03
know, where they were entirely omitted in the book. We
18:06
were able to find some names and other sources, but
18:08
not all of them. Showed up in old newspaper articles
18:10
and, you know, genealogy databases. So I just
18:12
want you to know that when we don't have names for some of the people here,
18:14
it wasn't due to a lack of effort. This
18:17
might be in a prolific serial killer who killed not that
18:19
long ago because, again, the only
18:21
target in sex workers, there just was not a
18:23
lot of interest in this bastard, not
18:25
a lot of investigative journalism done. Also,
18:27
it seems like most of his family went to great
18:29
lengths, greater lengths than a lot of the relatives of
18:31
serial killers, to not be interviewed
18:33
and not be associated with this dirty, dirty bird.
18:37
Okay, disclaimer done. Here we go. Crap
18:41
on those boots, soldier. We're
18:44
marching down a time suck
18:46
timeline. August
18:53
20, 1950, William Lester
18:55
Suff, born in Torrance, California. Torrance
18:59
is located in L.A. County, almost exactly 70
19:01
miles west of Riverside. Back
19:03
in 1950, the population there, about 22,000. Today it's about 150,000.
19:08
The city boasts a long list of associations
19:10
with notable people, including Chuck Norris. He
19:13
moved to Torrance when he was 12, actress-sex
19:15
symbol Bo Derek, filmmaker Quentin
19:18
Tarantino, spent a few years of his childhood in
19:20
Torrance. Bill was
19:22
the oldest of five children. His mother, Elizabeth,
19:24
later Elizabeth Meade, had four boys and one
19:26
girl. His biological father not named
19:28
at any source of the records we can find. So
19:32
I'd like to have some name to refer to him
19:34
when I talk about him, so I've just
19:36
made up a name at random, no relation to
19:39
any real living person. Just a
19:41
completely, totally random, made-up name, and
19:44
I'm just going to call him Pat Sayjack. Pat
19:46
Sayjack Huff, father of Bill. Bill
19:50
of siblings, Pat Sayjack, said it hits, who
19:52
did not grow up to also be serial killers. Born
19:55
in 1952, 1956, 1957, and 1958. One
20:01
brother's name was Kenneth. Kenneth later
20:03
told the Times that Bill was a typical
20:05
friendly older brother. We got into
20:07
fights like brothers do, but I never remember him being
20:09
violent or anything. Another brother was
20:11
Robert. Third brother's
20:13
name was Donald. Donald was arrested in 1994 for
20:15
molesting a girl under the age of 13. So
20:19
at least two
20:21
of the five of Pat Sajak's
20:23
kids are sexual predators. If
20:26
you take away nothing else from this
20:28
episode, let it be that
20:30
at least two of five of Pat Sajak's
20:32
kids are sexual predators. Bill's
20:36
parents got married November 26, 1949
20:38
in Virginia, moved to California before he
20:41
was born. Pat Sajak,
20:43
again Bill's father, moved to
20:45
take a job in the aerospace industry, but his true passion was, of course,
20:47
game show hosting. I mean, drumming.
20:50
More on that later. Pat's wife
20:52
Elizabeth has been described as
20:55
a strict, uncompromising housewife. The
20:58
Suffolk family moved from Torrance up north to Fresno in
21:00
central California. I don't know if that uncompromising part is
21:02
true, though. There's not some stuff that happens later. But
21:05
you did have to compromise. Suffolk
21:07
family moved from Torrance up
21:09
north to Fresno in central California shortly after
21:11
Bill's birth, where Suffolk siblings were born.
21:14
And Fresno, some existing marital problems apparently
21:16
worsened. In August of 1960,
21:19
the then 10-year-old
21:21
Bill's father, Pat Sajak's, filed
21:23
a divorce complaint, accusing
21:25
his wife of mental cruelty and associating with
21:27
men other than her husband. That's
21:30
a funny way of accusing her of maybe cheating on him,
21:32
associating with men other than her husband.
21:35
Do I know she's sucking other dicks, Your Honor? I
21:38
don't. What I do know is
21:40
that at the very least, she has been associating with men
21:42
other than her husband. And she's probably been
21:44
associating her lips right around the dirty, dirty wings.
21:46
I can't prove it, Your Honor. But come on.
21:50
Pat, surprising
21:52
considering what he'll do later, demanded full custody of the kids. Elizabeth
21:55
denied his accusations. Clayton, he was the one doing the cheating.
22:00
did not proceed past the initial complaint.
22:02
The subs were able to reconcile. Then
22:05
they moved to Riverside County, where they first lived
22:07
in the little town of Paris, about 3,000 people back
22:09
then, even though over 80,000
22:11
live there now, located
22:13
between Lake Elginor and Riverside. And
22:16
then they moved to Little Lake Elginor, which had a mix
22:18
of mostly middle class and low income families at the time.
22:21
And Lake Elginor, according to our main sources authors,
22:24
Kiers and St. Pierre, the
22:26
subfamily often teetered between two sides of the
22:28
community. The respected, hard working,
22:30
church going, family oriented side, and
22:33
the scandalous, impoverished, luckless,
22:35
narrow do well side. The
22:38
subs accrued more detractors than supporters.
22:41
So you know they sound like they were a little bit unstable. They'd
22:44
go to church for a while, try and
22:46
walk the straight and narrow, and then fucking
22:48
Elizabeth would start associated with some
22:51
straight cocks again, or Pat
22:53
Sajak would start flicking some straight
22:56
lady ween beans, and they're off the fucking rails.
22:59
Or that didn't happen. Something happened though. What did for
23:02
sure happen in Lake Elginor was Pat Sajak suddenly decided
23:04
he needed to pursue a career as a drummer, as
23:07
in right now. So
23:09
the father of five kids says
23:12
goodbye to a stable job with
23:14
good money and benefits and becomes a drummer for
23:16
a few local country western bands that aren't
23:18
doing anything other than playing some local gigs. And I'm
23:20
guessing singing some cover songs. And
23:22
this of course you know negatively affects the
23:24
family's finances very much so. Pat
23:27
Sajak being a little selfish. I'm
23:29
sure this decision led to a lot of fighting at home. Outside
23:32
of some financial troubles, Bill still seemed to enjoy
23:34
a pretty traditional 1950s, 1960s
23:37
suburban childhood though. When
23:39
the family was living in Fresno, the subs got really
23:41
into the Boy Scouts. Bill was a member. Mom was
23:43
a dead mother. Dad was a troop leader.
23:46
Lake Elginor, Bill and his siblings spent
23:48
a lot of their days playing in and near the lake and
23:51
in the Cleveland National Forest. Bill also
23:53
learned to play the trombone and the trumpet, later
23:56
participated in the band at Lake Elginor High School. Not
23:59
much is said about how Dad's treated the kids, no
24:01
mention of abuse. Although
24:03
she was not physically abusive, mom was said to
24:05
be very unaffectionate, not very
24:07
affectionate, a little cold towards her
24:09
kids. A lot will be made
24:12
by some psychologists studying this case later. Most
24:14
people interviewed in some docu- uh, doc- little documentary
24:16
episodes about this, who will say
24:18
that Bill desperately craved his mom's approval but didn't ever
24:21
feel like he really got it and
24:23
that this dynamic partially led to his
24:25
murdering ways later. I
24:27
don't know how much that's really true and
24:29
how much that just makes for good sound bites on
24:31
two crime docs. 1967,
24:34
when Billy Boy is still 16, the Suffolk family opened the
24:37
cafe as a source of income, and then one day, Bill's
24:39
father, fucking Pat Sajak, told
24:43
his wife Elizabeth he was, quote, going home
24:45
to change his clothes and he'd be back
24:47
at 3.30. But he
24:49
didn't come back at 3.30, he didn't come back at all. When
24:52
she went home after closing the cafe, Pat Sajak was
24:54
not there either. Dude just bounced,
24:56
ended up moving all the way across the
24:58
country to Flint, Michigan, to live
25:00
with his parents. Classic deadbeat
25:03
dad- classic Pat Sajak, really. Uh,
25:06
Mr. Suffolk claimed that his wife had begun
25:08
associating with another man, and that's
25:11
why he had to leave. Back in Michigan, he'll
25:13
remarry, have two daughters, then get divorced, then remarry
25:16
again when Bill gets arrested for numerous murders. And
25:19
it doesn't seem as if this fucking deadbeat dad had
25:21
any real contact with his kids, didn't really pay child
25:23
support, you know, didn't just get a divorce,
25:26
just abandon his entire family.
25:29
All five kids. See ya! It's
25:32
fucking crazy how often that happens. I
25:35
literally cannot imagine just abandoning all your responsibilities
25:37
like that, unless you're a sociopath,
25:40
you know? I would think that the guilt would eat you
25:42
alive. However, I've
25:44
learned here over and over that so
25:47
many of us meat sacks are so
25:49
good at rationalizing our terrible choices and
25:51
blaming everyone but ourselves when
25:53
it comes to us doing bad shit. Right?
25:56
I guess he just told everyone who would listen that
25:58
it was all Elizabeth's fault. She
26:01
forced him out. She left him no choice. He
26:03
had to go fucking drum in
26:06
Michigan and not live with this crazy
26:08
woman. She was so ashamed of all these dicks.
26:11
After the self-divorce was granted in
26:14
February 1968, Elizabeth would have to go
26:16
on welfare for herself and five kids to put
26:20
food on the table. So fuck Pat Sajak. And now
26:22
Bill takes on a paternal role with his siblings. Quote,
26:25
following the times in the strict critical
26:28
pattern his mother presented. That
26:30
didn't help foster a positive relationship with his siblings. Bill
26:33
apparently felt distant, separated from his brothers and his
26:35
sister, although he will still occasionally spend time with
26:37
them, or at least his brothers, when
26:39
they're all adults. And his sister's not really
26:42
mentioned. She might have been like, fuck that guy. Fuck
26:45
that creepy guy. He also supposedly was the
26:47
most responsible of the four soft boys when they were
26:49
young. He was actually the good kid. He
26:51
was the one who tried to keep his younger siblings out of trouble. Interestingly,
26:54
some of his brothers allegedly did shit like hurting
26:56
animals and starting fires, but not Bill. Not
26:59
really good boy. Internally, he
27:01
was clearly dealing with a lot of dark thoughts and
27:03
impulses based on his later behavior that
27:05
wouldn't take very long once he left the house to express.
27:09
Now attending Lake Elginor High School, Bill would
27:11
be a below average student. He'll graduate
27:13
87th out of a class of 144, but he did graduate.
27:18
His former vice principal described him as a
27:20
loner and said other students ignored him. He
27:23
called Bill likable, but quote, pathetic.
27:28
Pathetic is such a funny adjective. You
27:30
hear a lot of people, man, this guy's fucking
27:32
pathetic. It's
27:35
such a rough one. I'd rather
27:37
be called stupid and asshole, lazy.
27:39
Pathetic is – ooh, that one stings a
27:42
little bit more. Which I
27:44
knew why he used that adjective. Doesn't sound
27:46
like he was a big fan of Bill. Also,
27:48
how many of Bill's social problems were caused, at least
27:50
in part, by his dad just walking out
27:52
on him and his family when he was 16? Such
27:55
a sensitive and important age in
27:57
one's personal development. Why is it
28:00
that? has been around his entire life and then just sneaks
28:02
out. Doesn't in such a shitty way. Hey,
28:04
I'll see you. I'll be back at 3.30 at the cafe. I'll
28:06
see you in a bit. And then just
28:09
fucking leaps in the days
28:11
before cell phones, right? I'm sure for a while
28:13
there, they had literally no idea what
28:15
happened to them. It's like the classic, like, going out
28:17
for milk and cigarettes and they're just not coming home.
28:20
Just abandoned all his kids. That's got to do
28:22
with some serious psychological damage. Still,
28:25
Bill does not immediately become a delinquent. No
28:27
record of him being violent or showing any
28:29
real red flag behavior while in high school.
28:32
Despite being perceived by some as being a
28:35
pathetic loner, he was
28:37
involved in band, chess club. He attended
28:39
regular services with his family, the
28:42
Temple, Baptist Church in Paris. Also
28:44
enjoyed painting and music. As
28:47
soon as a young adult, Bill will become aggressive and
28:49
develop a disturbing pattern of violent behavior. Have
28:51
trouble keeping a job. Develop a pretty bad habit of
28:53
stealing or borrowing money from people without paying them back.
28:55
It is crazy how he goes from like, seems like
28:57
this pretty good high school kid, yeah,
29:00
a loner, but like involved in a lot of
29:02
things. Not the best grades, but getting good enough
29:04
grades to graduate and then just like
29:06
really goes off the rails a couple of years
29:08
later. We'll see
29:10
throughout the timeline, he was very good at compartmentalization.
29:13
Man, would only show the terrible side of himself
29:15
to some people. Maybe he was just
29:17
doing that in high school too. Maybe doing some sneaky shit I never
29:19
got caught for. To most, right
29:21
up until his arrest, he was able
29:23
to hide his true nature and come across a
29:25
pretty nice, helpful guy. And
29:28
now before meeting the first unfortunate love of his
29:30
life, before things get dark for
29:32
dear Billy, let's take the first of

34:32
Fresh, America's number one meal kit. I'm
34:36
back, hope you are too. Time to meet
34:38
Bill's first romantic interest, one of many, many people
34:41
who will very much regret ever meeting this dirt
34:43
bag. At the
34:45
1968 Rose Bowl game in Pasadena, January
34:47
1st, which Bill attended with
34:50
his high school band, a chance encounter
34:52
changes his life. He sees
34:54
a pretty girl, his twin flame, sitting
34:56
in stands who will later, again, very much regret
34:58
meeting this soon to be fucking
35:01
sociopath, psychopath. She was
35:03
wearing white jeans, they were dusty from the seats. He
35:05
let her know that the back of her jeans had
35:07
some dust on them, they started flirting. Then
35:09
he managed to talk to this girl, Terrell, into going on a date.
35:12
She reportedly liked his sense of humor. Terrell later
35:14
said that Bill seemed very
35:16
nice, good looking, pleasant. The
35:19
kind of guy a young girl would want to meet
35:21
because he seemed very sincere. Terrell
35:23
was just 15, Bill was not quite 18. After
35:27
the to date for most of 1968 with
35:29
no known incidents, following Bill graduating
35:31
from high school in the spring, in
35:33
January of 1969, still not sure what he wants
35:35
to do with his life, not sure where he
35:37
was working in the fall of 68, Bill
35:41
enlists in the Air Force. Also
35:43
proposes to Terrell and they do get engaged.
35:46
She didn't want to get married anytime soon, she promised
35:48
her parents she would wait to get married until she
35:50
graduated high school, but this plan will change. Bill
35:54
completed basic training at the Lackland Air Force Base
35:56
in San Antonio, Texas. He attended
35:58
drum and bugle school, spent. Six months
36:00
at the Shepherd Air Force Base in Wichita Falls,
36:02
Texas near the Oklahoma border, did some medical training
36:04
there, then assigned to the Carswell
36:07
Air Force Base in Fort Worth, Texas where he
36:09
worked as an aide in the pediatric ward of
36:11
the base hospital. Then
36:13
while in Carswell, Terrell called Bill, told him
36:15
she would have to end their engagement. She
36:18
had been the victim of acquaintance rape and
36:20
had become pregnant. She didn't want to
36:22
have an abortion for religious reasons as
36:25
she was a Jehovah's Witness and she
36:27
thought the right thing to do would be to put
36:29
the baby up for adoption and end the relationship. Bill
36:33
tells Terrell still wants to marry
36:35
her and he wants to keep and raise
36:37
the baby. Overjoyed thinking he is
36:39
such a good dude, she agrees. If
36:42
only she knew how complicated all this would get and how
36:44
Bill, you know, who was
36:46
really sweet right now, would reveal himself to
36:48
not be sweet at all very soon. This
36:51
incident maybe also changed him. Maybe he
36:53
blamed her for somehow allowing herself to
36:55
be raped, right? Just fucking old school shitty
36:57
thoughts about it. He certainly
37:00
will get very possessive and real abusive towards
37:02
her following this. December
37:04
13, 1969, Bill Terrell did get
37:07
married in Paris, California so she won't have to face
37:09
a social stigma at that time that
37:11
came with being unmarried and pregnant while still in high school.
37:14
But then Bill shares that now,
37:16
now he's having second thoughts about the baby. You
37:18
know what? He actually doesn't want to raise it. He
37:21
and his family convinced Terrell that she is too young to
37:23
take care of a baby and now once again she plans
37:25
to give the baby up for adoption. Bill
37:28
returns to Texas, promises to have his new
37:30
bride come live with him after she has the baby. But
37:33
then in order to be back in California for the
37:35
birth, Bill gets the emergency
37:37
leave he needs by telling his commanding officer
37:39
that his baby had unexpectedly passed away. So
37:42
he tells his big lie. Then when he
37:44
arrives back in California, Terrell tells
37:46
Bill she now is having second thoughts about giving
37:48
the baby up for adoption. She wants to keep
37:50
the baby. Bill is not having this. He
37:53
tells her that he had lied to get emergency
37:55
leave and that they will both go to
37:57
prison if the military finds out. He
38:00
tells her that she simply cannot come live with him in
38:02
Texas if she brings her baby. Terrible
38:04
leaves him about the possibility of her
38:06
also being arrested, even though that's a bunch of bullshit. She would
38:08
have never gotten in trouble for any of this. And
38:11
now she gives the baby to Bill's mom,
38:13
Elizabeth, who has just remarried. And
38:15
Elizabeth and her new husband take custody of the
38:17
little girl who is named
38:19
Dina, and they decide to raise her as
38:22
Bill's sister. So this is all
38:24
pretty fucking weird. Right? Weird
38:26
that they're going to raise her as Bill's sister.
38:28
Weird that they don't plan on ever telling her
38:30
that her sister-in-law is actually her mom. And
38:33
Bill showing some major manipulative tendencies here. Telling
38:35
a big lie to his commanding officers, followed
38:37
by another big lie to his new wife.
38:40
Terrible pressured into signing adoption papers, does so
38:43
in April of 1970, before
38:45
then going to live with Bill in Texas after
38:47
she graduates high school. Down
38:50
in Texas, Bill and Terrible almost immediately began
38:52
to have marital problems. Bill extremely
38:54
insecure and a jealous young man. And
38:57
just starts doing some crazy shit right off the rip. During
39:00
one argument about his controlling behavior, Terrible tells him
39:02
that she was a woman and not his possession.
39:05
And she responded with, no,
39:07
or I'm sorry, she said
39:09
he responded with, no, you're my wife and
39:11
that's all. She was
39:13
his possession in his eyes, as you'll see. And
39:17
Terrible here, she does remind me a
39:19
lot of my wife, Lindsay. Consistently
39:21
refusing to submit, to be subservient. It's
39:25
amazing to me that her disobedience and insistence on
39:27
exercising her own free will has
39:29
not led to me becoming a serial killer. Especially
39:32
since it's, you know, my dad and all, probably my DNA.
39:35
That running gag, by the way, I've had here with me
39:38
joking about Lindsay,
39:41
is something I've been doing privately for most
39:43
of our marriage. When I want to get a quick rise
39:45
out of her, I love to say stuff like, I
39:47
just want you to know you're a good wife. It's been
39:49
a, it's been a real pleasure owning you. You
39:52
are definitely one of my favorite pieces of property. And
39:54
even though she knows I'm joking, it fires her up so
39:56
much. It's so fun. Since I don't
39:58
live near my little sister, Donna. and
40:00
I don't get to still torture her on a regular
40:02
basis psychologically, this is the next best thing. Scratch
40:05
is the same of noxious older brother itch. And
40:07
don't feel bad for Lindsay. She
40:10
has an older brother who also isn't around
40:12
to be constantly harassed, so she does that to me.
40:14
Constant mockery in the common tone. Okay,
40:18
refocusing on the actual subject today. Echoing
40:20
Bill's own parents' relationship problems, both he
40:22
and Terrell now accuse each other of
40:24
cheating. They're both associated with other
40:27
people. Not
40:29
sure about Bill's accusations, but Terrell's accusations
40:31
based in reality. According to
40:33
interviews with her years later, when Bill first brought
40:35
her to Texas, he told
40:37
her that he got himself a girlfriend, got him some side
40:39
action, just tells her this, while he's waiting
40:41
for her to move in with him. And
40:43
he actually asked Terrell to cut and color
40:46
her hair to match this
40:48
supposed now former girlfriend, ballsy.
40:52
Lindsay might literally fucking murder me for
40:54
doing something like that. When Terrell
40:56
refused to grant this ridiculous request, she
40:59
said that Bill threw her across the room. So
41:01
cheating, physical abuse, and
41:04
they've just begun their marriage. Cheating physical
41:06
abuse after Bill lied to her about wanting to keep and
41:08
raise her baby. After lying about how she
41:10
couldn't bring the baby to Texas, because she'd go to prison.
41:13
So many red flags telling her
41:15
to get the fuck out now. But
41:18
Terrell is very young. She's
41:20
already lived through the stigma of being pregnant in high
41:22
school, or pregnancy from being raped back when people
41:25
less likely to believe rape victims than
41:27
they are now. I'm
41:29
guessing her self-esteem, not great. And
41:32
that she would not get a lot of social
41:34
support for becoming a woman who has had a
41:36
baby and a divorce before the age of 20.
41:38
So she stays. And
41:40
of course, as they pretty much always do in
41:43
these situations, things get worse. Bill
41:45
quickly becomes unhappy with her sex life now. He's
41:48
demanding that Terrell allow him to tie her up during
41:50
sex. She's not into that. So
41:52
he now rationalizes his cheating as being her
41:54
fault. They're having sex
41:56
problems because she is frigid. So
41:59
get divorced. Right? You married too
42:01
young. You're not right for each other. End it. But they
42:03
don't. Bill fucks around
42:05
while also becoming insanely possessive of Terrell, which
42:08
is a fairly typical pattern for assholes like this. Bill
42:10
was so controlling that he didn't even allow Terrell to
42:13
go grocery shopping alone. He would
42:15
call her several times a day to check on her while
42:17
she was working at a restaurant as a waitress, making
42:19
sure she's not sneaking off and fucking somebody,
42:21
not associated with other men, who are her
42:24
husband, like father, like
42:26
son, perhaps here, maybe a chip off
42:28
the old Pat Sajak block. Terrell
42:30
will tell authors, tears, and St. Pierre, Bill
42:33
could be very quiet and very wussy, wimpy.
42:36
He could also be very strong and domineering, depending
42:38
on what he thought was needed at that moment.
42:40
So, you know, he's super manipulative. That
42:43
sentiment will be echoed by others later. One
42:46
day, Terrell threatens to leave Bill during another argument. She
42:48
still worked as a waitress, and Bill would accuse her
42:50
of cheating on him, even if she came home late,
42:52
even if it was just like a few minutes, just
42:55
enough time to associate a dick right into
42:57
her mouth. Bill would tell her shit
42:59
like how, you know, she wouldn't survive without him. Terrell
43:02
shouted at him, after this one time she comes home a
43:04
little bit late, that she would make it on
43:06
her own, even if she had to, quote, be a
43:08
prostitute. And following that comment, Bill
43:11
slaps her so hard he knocks her across the
43:13
kitchen. The abuse is escalating,
43:15
as it almost always does in
43:17
these situations. Terrell will leave Bill twice while they lived in
43:19
Texas, the first time she left for a week. She
43:22
called her mom for advice, and her mom told
43:24
her she should go back and work
43:26
things out with him. Of course. Right?
43:29
Unfortunate sign of the times. Who
43:32
cares if he hits you? Calls your names. Accuses
43:34
you of cheating constantly. He's your husband.
43:37
Best you just figure out what you're doing to
43:39
make him want to hit you and knock that
43:41
off. This, this right
43:43
here, one of the reasons why it's so
43:45
important to talk about mental health, domestic violence,
43:47
women's rights. If people hadn't talked about
43:49
shit like this the past half century, if
43:52
the feminists that the incel community
43:54
so despised for fighting for women's
43:56
independence hadn't have fought for that,
43:59
this could- easily still be the social norm today.
44:02
December of 1970, Bill, just 20 years old now, discharged
44:06
from the Air Force despite signing a four-year
44:08
contract two years earlier. His
44:11
records about the discharge were sealed. He'll
44:13
later testify that he was honorably discharged, but one
44:15
of his brothers told authors cures in St. Pierre.
44:18
Not true, he was dishonorably discharged. Another
44:21
source indicated to the authors that he was discharged
44:23
because he could not function in a military environment,
44:25
whatever that means. What did he do? Well,
44:28
probably never know. But clearly young
44:30
Bill, struggling in various aspects of his
44:32
life, personal and professional. Over
44:34
the next few years, Bill will struggle to
44:37
stay gainfully employed, so abusive and fucking lazy.
44:39
He's quite the catch. He
44:41
and Terrell struggle to make ends meet. Terrell
44:43
continues to work as a waitress, will also work
44:46
sometimes as a telemarketer. Bill
44:48
will work short stints as a fry cook,
44:50
delivery truck driver, ambulance aid, warehouse worker, and
44:52
parking lot attendant in Texas. And he'll lose
44:54
nearly all those jobs by getting
44:57
fired, as opposed to quitting. He's
45:00
not only fired from his job as a parking lot attendant, also
45:02
arrested and convicted of auto theft. So
45:05
not doing great. Suff's future
45:07
defense attorney in his murder trial, the
45:10
trial about the murders he committed, John L.
45:12
Gamboa said, it probably troubled him
45:14
deeply to be an intelligent,
45:17
extremely manipulative man, obviously
45:19
not reaching his potential. He felt like
45:22
he was dealt a bad blow in life, just one of those
45:24
people who just didn't seem to fit in. Playing
45:26
the victim, classic loser move. I
45:29
like how even his defense attorney refers to him as being
45:31
not just manipulative, but extremely
45:34
manipulative. Bill continues
45:36
unsurprisingly, being jealous and controlling of Terrell.
45:39
One day when Terrell was about nine months pregnant with
45:41
her second child, she and Bill walking home from the
45:43
movies, when a group of guys whistled at her, cat
45:46
called from their car, Terrell
45:49
told Kiers and St. Pierre, Bill went
45:51
absolutely apeshit over it. He
45:53
started screaming at them, then screaming at me. Who
45:55
are they? I said, hell, I don't know.
45:58
Then he was chasing down the street. ready to kill them.
46:00
I said, Christ almighty, Bill, I'm pregnant. How sexy
46:02
can I be when I'm almost nine months pregnant?
46:05
He calmed down after that, but it was kind of unnerving. Couples
46:09
first child Pat Sajak Huff named after his
46:11
grandfather, born November 27, 1971. He was
46:16
not named Pat Sajak. He was named William
46:18
Lester Suft Jr. And poor
46:20
little Billy, not born into a happy or safe
46:22
home at all. Bill Suft
46:24
easily one of the worst dads we have come across
46:26
here. He always seemed to
46:28
have a variety of mysterious bruises on his body, starting
46:30
when he was just a few months old, little Billy.
46:33
Those bruises consistently would show up after
46:35
Bill had been watching him. So weird. Bill
46:38
will tell Terrell that he was injured by things like, you know,
46:40
the knob on the cradle, you know, just
46:42
fell down. Then Terrell saw Bill slap little
46:45
Billy in the face because he was fussy
46:47
due to teething. Literally
46:49
slapped a fucking baby in the face. A baby
46:51
about three or four months old when this
46:53
happened. She told Bill to
46:55
never do that again. He responded that Billy needed
46:57
to learn to stop crying when he told him
47:00
to. Yeah, dude, that's not
47:02
how fucking babies work. Their brains,
47:04
much like yours, not fully developed. Bill
47:07
just keeps establishing himself as a bigger and bigger piece
47:09
of shit, right? Couldn't hack it in the military. Can't
47:12
hold a job. Beats his wife,
47:14
beats his baby. Pathetic loner in high
47:16
school. Good thing
47:18
he didn't try and raise Terrell's first baby.
47:20
If this is how he treats
47:22
his own son, how would he have treated a
47:24
baby that was not his? Speaking
47:26
of babies, March 10th, 1972, little Billy goes
47:29
to the hospital for severe bruises
47:31
across his face, abdomen and back. Jesus
47:34
Christ. Bill claimed, you know, he hit himself
47:36
with a rocking crib. How
47:39
many times Bill? Little Billy was transferred
47:41
to child welfare, but the case
47:43
worker could not keep him in state custody
47:45
for an extended period of time without further,
47:48
you know, legal action. Something fucking red tape
47:50
bullshit. He goes back to his parents. Back
47:53
home, Bill's violence does not stop with his wife and
47:55
child. It extends to family pets as well. One
47:58
day, a new family kitten. was standing
48:00
in the doorway, meowing. After
48:02
screaming at it to shut up, Bill
48:05
shoots the kitten in the head with a BB gun and
48:07
kills it. Terrell freaks out
48:09
and then he tells her it was just an accident. He
48:12
was just trying to scare it. Bojangles
48:14
actually thinks this part of the story is
48:16
pretty funny. Bad Bojangles, bad dog.
48:19
Despite all the abuse, Terrell
48:21
stays and gets pregnant again. And
48:24
on July 20th, 1973, Bill
48:26
and Terrell's daughter, Dejanay Jean
48:29
Suff is born. And she is
48:31
quickly nicknamed Dee Dee. And
48:33
Bill, right from the start, does not give
48:35
a fuck about Dee Dee. Does not want
48:37
her. Starting to seem like
48:39
this guy just hates women in general, probably hates mama,
48:41
hates his wife, now hates his infant daughter. He
48:44
straight up tries to give Dee Dee away to the neighbors,
48:47
but they refuse to take her. Then
48:49
when she is just a month old, Terrell
48:52
starts to notice bruises on Dee Dee's body. Bill
48:55
tells her that little Billy is the one causing the bruises. You
48:57
know, he's just hugging Dee Dee too hard. He
49:00
insists that he knew what he was talking about here because, you
49:02
know, he used to work at the pediatric ward at the base
49:05
hospital, you know, before the army kicked him out for being a
49:07
piece of shit. I wonder what the fuck
49:09
he did to the kids under his care there. Did
49:11
he sneak in some abuse? Was that why he was discharged?
49:13
I would not be surprised. A
49:16
few weeks later, after more mysterious, but not really that
49:18
mysterious bruises show up, on the night of September 24th,
49:20
1973, two month old Dee Dee starts vomiting. Terrell wants
49:22
to take her to
49:25
the hospital. Bill says it's not necessary.
49:27
You know, he brings up his experience at the pediatric ward.
49:29
He's like, nah, I got this. Very
49:32
next day, Terrell's at work now. Bill's
49:34
at home watching and beating the shit out of the
49:36
kids. Calls his wife at
49:38
noon saying it's Dee Dee come home quick.
49:40
When Terrell gets home, Bill's crying. Then
49:43
he says some weird shit. He says, please don't
49:45
hate me for leaving her. Please don't hate the
49:47
world. Hate the world? What's
49:49
he talking about? Terrell now sees that
49:51
her bruised daughter is not breathing. She calls 911.
49:53
Dee Dee is pronounced dead on arrival
49:55
at the hospital. Bill told the
49:57
police he was cleaning the living room while Dee Dee was in the bedroom.
50:00
When he went to check on her, he said he found
50:02
her face down on the floor, not in her bed, didn't
50:04
detect any vital signs, and then ran to a
50:06
payphone. Not to call the ambulance, but to call Terrell. After
50:10
the police left, Bill tells Terrell a
50:12
different story, a ludicrous, outrageous,
50:14
get the fuck out of here, that did not happen
50:16
story. Bill
50:18
explains to her that he was not a member
50:20
of the Air Force. He was a
50:22
– that was a cover. That was a cover story for
50:25
his real job as a CIA operative. Of
50:28
course, he was a big time, elite
50:30
CIA agent, cream of the crop, super
50:32
spy. Very important man, everybody.
50:35
He told her that he had briefly gone outside
50:38
and that while he was out, someone else
50:40
from the CIA snuck into their apartment, killed
50:42
Dee Dee, as a message
50:44
to stay quiet about something. But
50:47
that seems reasonable. But Terrell knew
50:49
that Bill had told the police he didn't know who
50:51
had killed Dee Dee, and he said that little Billy may have hurt
50:53
her while he was out using the payphone. And
50:56
then the autopsy report comes back, and you might want
50:58
to hit the skip button for this next
51:00
part. Just skip 30 seconds ahead.
51:03
If you don't want to hear how Dee Dee died – I know we talk
51:05
about a lot of brutal shit here, but we
51:07
tend not to talk about it being done to babies.
51:10
This is fucking brutal. But
51:12
here we go if you're still listening. Dejan
51:14
Asuf died from a wild amount of
51:16
physical abuse. Bill had
51:19
ruptured her liver. Medical experts
51:21
later testified that extreme force is necessary to
51:23
rupture her liver, that it literally wouldn't be
51:25
possible for little Billy to apply that kind
51:27
of force. Later assumed that
51:30
she had been punched in the
51:32
liver very hard by her
51:34
monster of a father. Dee Dee
51:36
also covered with bruises, had serious injuries that were
51:38
two to three weeks old. This is
51:40
a barely two month old baby. 13
51:44
broken ribs, broken arm, dislocated
51:46
shoulder, palm print shaped bruise
51:48
on her fucking face, those
51:51
not even the most disturbing injuries. Also
51:53
had adult bite marks on
51:56
her forehead and stomach. Finally
51:58
worse one, cigarette beer. burn on the bottom
52:00
of her foot so severe it went down
52:02
to the bone. This
52:04
two-month-old child was fucking tortured. Her
52:07
whole very short life. Fuck
52:09
Bill Suff. And honestly, fuck
52:11
Terrell too for not grabbing
52:13
her kids and fleeing before this happened. Her
52:16
baby wasn't maybe being abused. She
52:19
knew. There's very obvious
52:21
bruises, bite marks, and she
52:23
still left the kids with him. I don't
52:26
think we should give even other abuse
52:28
victims when they're adults, a moral pass
52:30
for not doing shit to
52:32
protect the helpless baby. Two
52:34
days after the police found little D.D. dead, September 27, 1973, 23-year-old
52:36
William Lester Suff charged
52:41
with the murder of Dejan A. Suff. Little
52:44
over four months later, February 5, 1974,
52:46
Terrell Suff also charged with her murder, an
52:49
intentional affliction of injury thanks to Bill doing
52:51
everything he could to blame her
52:54
for the abuse. Both
52:56
Bill and Terrell will go to trial in April of 1974. Bill's
52:59
attorney, John Gamboa, tried to find mitigating
53:01
factors for the defense. Bill
53:03
refused to talk about his parents or siblings, which
53:05
is interesting. What may
53:07
have went on in his childhood that he just wouldn't address,
53:11
neighbors, home visitors, landlords testified about
53:13
Bill's violent behavior and various incidents
53:15
of abuse involving his children, arguments
53:17
with Terrell, unwillingness to work, other
53:20
incidents of problematic antisocial behavior.
53:23
Bill's defense tries to portray him as a
53:25
loving father and a former Air Force corpsman
53:28
too medically dedicated to
53:30
even consider inflicting harm on another
53:32
human. Terrell testifies that
53:34
Dejan A. may have died due to little
53:36
Billy loving and hugging her. She probably
53:39
just wanted to believe that to alleviate her own guilt.
53:42
Also testified that she had not witnessed any child
53:44
abuse, which is not true. She'll admit that many
53:46
years later. Bill gets
53:48
on the stand, denies any responsibility for the murder.
53:51
April 11th, 1974, both Bill and
53:53
Terrell convicted of murder. Both
53:56
received 70 year sentences and
53:58
then Bill gets another three years. on a separate theft
54:00
charge. Then
54:03
on January 21st, 1976, the
54:05
state court of criminal appeals upholds
54:07
Bill's murder conviction but reverses Terrell's
54:09
conviction. The appeals court found that there
54:11
was no evidence Terrell had been involved in
54:13
the murder of her child. So
54:15
Terrell now begins divorce proceedings. She
54:18
tells Bill, I just want a divorce. I just want
54:20
my maiden name back. I don't want anything from you.
54:22
I just want out of the marriage. What?
54:25
I thought there were twin flames. Guess not.
54:28
Bill wrote her a letter that said, he
54:31
is such a piece of shit. This is
54:33
what his letter said. I'm surprised and very deeply
54:35
hurt. Why, oh why,
54:37
are you filing for divorce? That's
54:40
a very wicked thing to do. What's
54:42
more, it doesn't sound like the devout Jehovah's
54:44
Witness you profess to be. Well,
54:47
if that's what you really want, I'll not contest
54:49
it in any way, shape or manner. Let
54:51
your conscience be your guide. The
54:55
fucking nerve of
54:57
this baby torturing, wife beating piece
54:59
of shit to talk
55:02
to anybody about their conscience. Fuck this guy.
55:05
Why would he be murdered in prison? Come on Texas.
55:07
This is Texas in the 70s. Disappointed
55:11
in the Texas penal system for not accidentally
55:13
letting a prison gang have unsupervised access to
55:15
Bill for, I don't know, five, 10 minutes.
55:19
Just enough time to beat that sick fuck to death. Time to
55:21
rupture his liver. Put some cigarettes on him
55:23
and shit. Bill even
55:25
wrote a letter to Terrell's mother trying to
55:27
blame her for the murder. He wrote
55:29
that he was religious enough to forgive Terrell
55:32
and would still love her. Oh
55:34
my God. He claimed that he had passed two
55:36
polygraphs but Terrell had refused three times to take
55:38
one. What did he make of that? Huh,
55:40
huh, huh. Part of the
55:42
letter stated, quote, only Jehovah knows who
55:44
caused the death. Well, the fucking
55:47
jury knew you piece of shit. Only
55:49
Jehovah knows who caused the death and can judge
55:51
the guilty person or forgive that person. All
55:54
I can do is forgive and ask Jehovah's blessing for
55:56
those that have done me wrong. Right,
55:58
Terrell? and praying for
56:00
Jehovah to bless and forgive Terrell for
56:03
any thoughts of divorce she may have in her mind.
56:05
I've already forgiven her. God,
56:07
he's so noble. He's so righteous. He
56:09
ended with if, and I have
56:11
to say if, because I do not know if
56:14
Terrell is responsible for Dejanay's death.
56:17
I have to forgive her for that too. I
56:19
know that I didn't hurt Dejanay
56:21
and so does Jehovah.
56:25
In this moment, I hope that hell is real and
56:28
I hope he's burning alive there. The divorce, I guess he
56:30
couldn't be burning alive because he's not dead, but I hope
56:32
he's going to be burning alive there. The
56:34
divorce finalized February 25th, 1976. Around
56:38
the same time, little Billy diagnosed with intellectual
56:40
problems due to the physical abuse he suffered
56:42
at Bill's hands. So before being
56:45
arrested, he beat one kid to death, left
56:47
the other kid with brain damage. Terrell
56:49
and Bill both relinquished their parental rights
56:51
in October. Good. And
56:54
little Billy's adopted. According to Cares and St. Pierre,
56:56
he was able to grow up normally with almost
56:58
no symptoms of his original problems. Luckily, the brain
57:00
can largely heal itself sometimes,
57:03
especially when the abuse happens when someone's very young.
57:06
Meanwhile, Bill is a model prisoner. He,
57:09
of course, you know, lied to other inmates. You
57:11
know, he said he was in prison for attacking
57:14
his wife's lover. To be
57:16
that someone familiar with what he really
57:18
did didn't leak that accidentally to
57:20
the other prisoners. One of the
57:22
many reasons I could never be a correctional officer. I don't
57:24
think I'd be able to help myself. Hey,
57:28
Jack. I seem to spend a lot of time
57:30
with the new guy, Billy. I'm
57:32
surprised. I didn't take you for a
57:34
guy who'd like to get friendly with, you know, baby killers. Oh,
57:36
no, no, yeah. No, he beat his daughter to death. Courtier, too. In
57:40
a situation like that, I would lie. I would make
57:42
up some other shit, too. Yeah, I mean, he probably
57:44
molested her. I mean, he definitely molested some other kids, definitely raped
57:46
him. You know, some of the neighbor kids. Brutal
57:48
stuff. Almost raped him to death. Anyway,
57:52
have fun with your new pedo baby killing buddy. Guess maybe
57:54
you're one of those guys. And then maybe I'd accidentally drop
57:56
a shiv on the ground. What'd you look at that? Anyway,
57:59
take care, Jack. Do the right thing. While
58:02
in prison, Bill the Human turd participated
58:04
in the prison band, even
58:06
got his bachelor's degree in sociology in
58:09
1980. That's cool. He'd make
58:11
a great social worker, clearly. March
58:13
of 1984, after serving just nine years and nine months
58:15
for torturing and beating his fucking baby to death, he's
58:18
paroled. What's the fucking point
58:21
of giving somebody a 70-year sentence, actually 73 years with the
58:24
other charge, if they can just get
58:26
out in less than 10? It's a stupid little game. Why
58:29
has anyone ever released, ever, after beating
58:31
a baby to death? I feel
58:33
like that specific crime should always carry at
58:35
minimum a life sentence with no possibility of
58:38
parole. You should pass a new national law.
58:40
If you abuse a child to death, there's literally no
58:42
chance in hell you ever go free again.
58:45
We could call it the Fuck You Forever Baby Killer law. Also
58:48
maybe with that law, you get baby killer fucking tats on your
58:51
forehead. Baby killers should be given the least
58:53
amount of freedom while in prison. There
58:55
should be special cells for baby killers. They're like
58:57
three foot by three foot. Guards,
58:59
how am I supposed to ever lay down?
59:02
That's not my problem. Baby killer, how about you go
59:04
fuck yourself? Guards, my
59:06
back is killing me. I had to
59:08
see a doctor. No, no you don't. Not
59:11
going to happen. Tough shit, baby killer.
59:14
If you want to get your back to feel better, well, you probably need to
59:16
invent a time machine. What? Well,
59:19
you know, so you can go back and not kill
59:21
a baby, you piece of shit. If you can go
59:23
back in time and not kill a baby, well, your problems will be
59:25
solved. First fuckers released
59:27
because prisons and texts at the time were overcrowded
59:29
and he was classified as a low risk offender.
59:32
You know, I feel like a better way to deal with
59:34
prison overcrowding would be to just execute baby killers. We
59:36
start with baby killers, then execute
59:39
pedophiles and rapists and murderers with
59:41
multiple offenses. And
59:43
as the prison is still crowded, now we
59:45
execute and like just quickly pedophiles
59:47
and rapists and murders with single offenses. I
59:50
mean that would really cut down at overcrowding. Oh,
59:53
and also maybe more importantly, we release everyone in
59:55
prison for nonviolent drug offenses. Now there's so much
59:57
room. So much room for the worst of the
59:59
worst. Easy peasy problem solved. Bill
1:00:03
wrote in his residence plan that he wanted to
1:00:05
move to California, officials in Texas and California approved
1:00:07
the plan, and now he's paroled to Riverside County.
1:00:09
I should have denied him. What
1:00:12
do you want to do? Move to California? No.
1:00:16
Why not? Well, because you're a baby killer. So,
1:00:18
you know, fuck even what you want to do forever. Nice talk.
1:00:22
Bill the baby killer, son of Sajak, now
1:00:25
moves back in with his mother and her second
1:00:27
husband to Riverside County's Sunset City. Which
1:00:30
was at this time a retirement community developed in 1962 for seniors 55
1:00:32
and over. Bill's
1:00:35
stepfather described as being very strict,
1:00:37
critical and demanding. A male
1:00:39
counterpart to the tough maternal influence in the
1:00:41
household. Bill and his stepdad
1:00:43
disliked each other. I bet they did.
1:00:46
And now his stepdad was super thrilled about
1:00:48
a fucking baby killer coming to live with him. That
1:00:50
would be a deal breaker for me. 100%. Yeah,
1:00:53
no, your shitty son can live here. But
1:00:55
only after, you know, you and I get a divorce and I'm not
1:00:57
living here. Bill's
1:00:59
sister, Dina, Terrell's daughter, only 13 or
1:01:01
14 now, also disliked him. Terrell
1:01:04
told Cures and St. Pierre that based on her conversations
1:01:06
with the girl, she didn't like
1:01:08
Bill at all and argued with him a lot. She
1:01:11
said she tried to avoid him as much as possible.
1:01:13
Sometimes he would search her out, start to argue with
1:01:15
her. Then she would say, get
1:01:17
on my face, leave me alone. I don't
1:01:20
know why she didn't like him. She never said she just
1:01:22
didn't like the way he acted. How
1:01:24
did Terrell feel about the man who killed one
1:01:26
of her kids, beat another into intellectual, intellectual
1:01:29
disability, living with her remaining child?
1:01:32
How does she not try and stop him from living there? How
1:01:34
is he allowed to live in a home with any children?
1:01:36
And it after what he did, why is she talking to
1:01:39
the girl she gave away that's supposed to
1:01:42
be, you know, like Bill's fucking sister? So
1:01:44
many questions. Soon
1:01:46
after moving in with mom, Bill borrows a large amount of money
1:01:48
from her claiming he needed it to pay for a divorce. What
1:01:51
she didn't know was that Terrell had already
1:01:53
paid for the divorce. So
1:01:56
the low risk release immediately gets back to some of
1:01:58
his old manipulative tricks. Elizabeth
1:02:00
finds out the truth about her son when she talks to Terrell on
1:02:02
the phone. Bill also shortly after
1:02:04
making it to California tries to contact Terrell by
1:02:07
leaving a message with her roommate that he'd been released
1:02:09
from prison. Terrell told authors
1:02:11
again, Cures and St. Pierre, he
1:02:13
said he knew where I was and
1:02:15
if he couldn't have me, no one would. So
1:02:18
you know, real nice guy. A low threat. You
1:02:20
know, it's not like he's immediately threatening his ex-wife the second
1:02:22
he gets out of prison. Maybe,
1:02:24
after maybe working things out with mom and giving her money back, it's
1:02:26
never made clear if he did that or not. He
1:02:29
probably didn't give all of it back if he gave some, just
1:02:31
based on who he is. Bill gets a job
1:02:33
for a couple months doing data entry at
1:02:35
a local computer company before getting fired. No
1:02:37
surprise. Bill
1:02:40
would live with his family until the summer of 1984. After
1:02:42
his data entry job, he works at McDonald's for six
1:02:44
months before probably getting fired, doesn't say. Following
1:02:47
moving out, he'll stay in touch
1:02:49
with his brothers, not sure he sees mom or
1:02:51
sister or stepdad very often, if at all. Parole
1:02:55
officials will check in on Bill monthly for the first
1:02:57
three years following his release. In
1:02:59
1987, Texas will then relax Bill's
1:03:01
parole status and he'll only have
1:03:03
to report to his parole officer once a year now.
1:03:06
And he'll only do that once. No
1:03:08
one will notice when he stops checking in with his
1:03:10
parole officer in subsequent years. That's cool.
1:03:12
Texas only realized he hadn't been checking in when he was
1:03:14
later arrested again in 1992. For
1:03:18
fuck's sake.
1:03:20
Our Bill now meets his next twin flame. Time
1:03:23
for our second of two mid-show sponsor breaks.
1:03:26
And I'm back. Time to meet
1:03:29
the new lucky lady. Backing
1:03:31
up to July of 1984, Bill
1:03:34
now 33 meets an older woman named
1:03:36
Bonnie Ashley. His one true twin flame. Sources
1:03:39
don't reveal her age. She just listed as being older. For
1:03:42
fun, let's pretend she's somewhere between 90 and 100.
1:03:46
They'll have an off and on again relationship for the next five years.
1:03:49
Bill will soon move into Bonnie's home in Lake Elginor
1:03:51
and freeload like the fucking bum he was. Authors
1:03:54
Cures and St. Pierre wrote that
1:03:56
Bill might have been attracted to Bonnie because he was
1:03:58
reaching out for an affectionate mother. Maybe
1:04:02
she was quite a bit older, probably not 90, maybe
1:04:05
in her 50s. Let's pretend that she was in her 50s but
1:04:07
looked like she was between 90 and 100. Bonnie
1:04:10
will later say that Bill was never abusive or violent
1:04:12
towards her and that he never even shouted at her.
1:04:15
Well, he found a meal ticket. She was actually doing
1:04:17
very well for herself. She was a successful real estate agent and
1:04:20
he didn't want to fuck it up. He'll take his aggression
1:04:22
out towards other women. Bill
1:04:24
and Bonnie were at least, according to Bonnie, happy together
1:04:26
for a few years. They once
1:04:28
went on a trip to Kings Canyon National Park
1:04:30
where Bill purchased some t-shirts as a souvenir. This
1:04:33
detail about the t-shirts will later turn out to be
1:04:35
an important piece of evidence against him. Early
1:04:38
in the relationship, Bill spent a lot of his
1:04:40
free time driving around to learn shortcuts, scenic routes,
1:04:43
which will come in handy when he needs
1:04:45
places to dispose of victims. I
1:04:47
imagine he was already planning murders shortly after these
1:04:49
two started dating, or perhaps
1:04:52
already committing murders he was just never caught for. Our
1:04:55
lead appeared as if Bill decided to turn over a
1:04:57
new leaf in California. To most people,
1:04:59
he came across as kind and helpful. But
1:05:02
of course, he usually had ulterior motives when he was
1:05:04
being nice. He would win a lot of people over.
1:05:07
It would seem mostly so he could ask them for
1:05:09
small amounts of money that he would never repay. He
1:05:12
also helped Bonnie take care of her home and
1:05:14
other properties she owned, and even helped
1:05:16
take care of her elderly mother, wondering how much
1:05:18
he fleeced from her. Bill's brother Robert
1:05:20
will later remember how one day when he and Bill
1:05:22
were cleaning up in Bonnie's yard, Bill made a comment
1:05:25
about how much he hated prostitutes. He
1:05:27
said it was strange because he said it was zero prompting.
1:05:29
They weren't talking about prostitutes. It just kind of came out
1:05:31
of nowhere. Bill had actually
1:05:33
been paying sex workers already at this
1:05:36
time. He'd been paying them since he first
1:05:38
moved back to California. Those poor women. But
1:05:41
he frequently professed publicly against things like
1:05:43
drugs, alcohol, and sex work. According
1:05:46
to one anonymous sex worker, who was a
1:05:48
regular, Bill was a regular client of hers,
1:05:51
Bill was real into bondage and whips. He
1:05:54
liked to hurt people. Also allowed her to
1:05:56
use his apartment to do drugs. Bill
1:05:59
engaged in some serious complaints. departmentalization now already living
1:06:01
two separate lives. In
1:06:03
April of 1985, Bill is offered a position to
1:06:05
work at a computer store in Lake Elsinore. Before
1:06:07
he's hired, Bill had stopped by often
1:06:10
to talk with the owners and I've done an unidentified
1:06:12
married couple. He and his the
1:06:15
owners, the husband and wife complained
1:06:18
about how Lake Elsinore's main street had declined
1:06:20
because of sex work and drugs. Couple
1:06:23
talked to Bill about a revitalization campaign for main
1:06:25
street to get rid of the sex workers that
1:06:27
were starting to frequent the downtown area in recent
1:06:29
years. Bill hung up
1:06:31
posters with them advertising their campaign repeatedly
1:06:34
expressed how sex workers disgusted him. Wonder
1:06:37
if any of the sex workers who you know,
1:06:39
he had hired saw him do this. Like if
1:06:41
you're a sex worker, and you see a client
1:06:43
of yours doing something like that, maybe avoid that
1:06:46
conflicted fucking maniac at all costs going forward.
1:06:49
Just a thought. Now the
1:06:51
couple eventually offered Bill a sales job. Bill
1:06:53
was to be paid in commissions, but he
1:06:55
failed to sell literally anything for
1:06:57
six months. Because you know,
1:07:00
he was a lazy worthless sneaky pile of shit.
1:07:02
The owners now paid him to babysit their kids or
1:07:05
help out around the house because they felt bad for him and
1:07:07
they had no idea that he'd been arrested
1:07:09
back in Texas. Right? He would
1:07:11
routinely lie about stuff like that on job
1:07:13
applications. This couple became friends
1:07:16
with Bill to the point that they even offered
1:07:18
him a room in their house. Terrifying. But
1:07:21
Bonnie did not approve of that because the husband was often
1:07:23
out of town. She didn't want her precious
1:07:25
Billy boy to be alone with this woman. She
1:07:28
told Bill that told Bill that they were over if
1:07:30
Bill moved in with his couple. So he chose to
1:07:32
stick with his meal ticket and he reduced contact with
1:07:34
a couple after that. June
1:07:36
of 1986 Bill now gets a new
1:07:38
part time job and appliance store and Lake
1:07:40
Elsinore owned by an elderly couple. They
1:07:43
thought Bill was very reliable. In
1:07:45
reality, he was stealing money from their cash register
1:07:47
to pay sex workers. This guy is such a pile
1:07:49
of shit. He has no redeeming qualities. The
1:07:52
owners usually would leave Bill alone in the store on Sundays
1:07:54
when they go to church and while they were at church,
1:07:56
he would bring women into the store, locked
1:07:59
the store up so no actual paying customers
1:08:01
should come in and then have sex in the
1:08:03
back room and then take money out of the
1:08:05
Register to pay them pay the women he
1:08:08
supposedly hated and looked down upon When
1:08:10
the couple finally found out that he was stealing money
1:08:12
He confessed promised to pay them back and for some
1:08:14
reason these people too kind He was
1:08:16
so manipulative they forgave him and he would keep that
1:08:18
job until the until April of 1989 worked
1:08:21
there almost three years Never paid
1:08:23
the couple back any of the money
1:08:25
he stole Should have taken out of
1:08:27
this fucking wages, but they didn't Backing
1:08:30
up to October of 1986 when bill was
1:08:32
still working at the appliance store He also started working
1:08:34
part-time for Riverside County as a stock clerk at
1:08:37
the county warehouse a job that would bring
1:08:39
him into close contact With law enforcement his
1:08:41
main duties were filling orders for office supplies and
1:08:43
furniture Bill again lied
1:08:46
on his about his criminal record on this
1:08:48
job application No one around him
1:08:50
other than his family knew back when background checks were
1:08:52
harder to perform than now That
1:08:54
he was out in parole for killing his own child And
1:08:57
he had his family convinced or at least like partially
1:08:59
convinced that somebody else Beat
1:09:01
his daughter to death and you know he took the
1:09:03
fall for it probably mom probably
1:09:06
peril Bill enjoyed his
1:09:08
job at the warehouse. He was social with everybody
1:09:10
well-liked amongst his co-workers He even
1:09:12
participated in the employee bowling league and
1:09:14
organized the first chili cook-off At
1:09:17
the annual County employees picnic a
1:09:19
cook-off he would win several years in a row So
1:09:22
I guess he does have one redeeming quality. He
1:09:24
can make a mean bowl of chili How
1:09:26
good would that chili have to be by the way for
1:09:28
you to keep eating it if you knew that the
1:09:31
cook was a baby killer Like
1:09:33
hopefully you really hate baby killers What
1:09:35
if you also really love chili? And
1:09:38
he makes literally the best chili you've ever had by a long
1:09:40
ways. It's the best food you've ever had by
1:09:43
miles Do you take a moral
1:09:45
stand and avoid everything he has anything to do with or are
1:09:47
you like? I'm gonna tell that guy to go fuck himself As
1:09:50
soon as I figure out how to make this chili god damn it's really
1:09:52
good Few years
1:09:54
later while the serial killer task force is an operation
1:09:56
They'll need a lot of office supplies and bill will
1:09:58
sometimes deliver supplies to the very officers trying to find
1:10:01
him and discuss the case
1:10:03
with those investigators. He
1:10:05
once told the deputy that the killer
1:10:07
was murdering sex workers, you know, to
1:10:10
clean up the street. Kind of doing a good thing. If
1:10:12
you think about it, he must have
1:10:14
loved feeling like he's outsmarting them, feeling powerful,
1:10:17
right? These pathetic dipshits always do. His
1:10:20
old vice principal was right. He is pathetic. Those
1:10:22
kids back in high school, correct, to ignore this twisted
1:10:25
loser. Bill also
1:10:27
showed off his helpful side by participating in a
1:10:29
ride share program, with fellow county employees. He
1:10:31
actually drove his coworkers around in the same van he was
1:10:33
using to pick up and kill victims. Had
1:10:35
them fooled. Most of them. Not
1:10:38
everyone thought Bill was a stand-up guy. Bill
1:10:40
was known for making a lot of sexual jokes
1:10:42
at work, which made at least one of his
1:10:44
female coworkers uncomfortable. But whenever she would
1:10:46
complain, you know, her complaints would be brushed off. I
1:10:49
hope she, after he was arrested for being a serial
1:10:52
killer, at least had a real good, I fucking told
1:10:54
you guys moment, you know, with her
1:10:56
coworkers. A few
1:10:58
coworkers also complained he spent a lot of time
1:11:00
bullshitting instead of working. Bill was hyper,
1:11:02
easily distracted, used more sick
1:11:04
leave than any other employee, claimed he couldn't do
1:11:07
heavy lifting because of a back injury from a
1:11:09
motorcycle accident, but man, never had trouble lifting something
1:11:11
if it was like, you know, served him in
1:11:13
some way personally. Bill also
1:11:15
often borrowed gas money from coworkers,
1:11:17
didn't pay them back. He sounds like
1:11:20
a fucking piece of shit. Just even,
1:11:22
you know, outside of the crimes he's committing.
1:11:25
He also probably started killing by now. He
1:11:28
first expected, his first suspected victim died the
1:11:30
same month Bill was hired at the
1:11:32
warehouse. October 30th, 1986,
1:11:35
the body of 23 year old Michelle
1:11:37
Yvette Gutierrez found in the
1:11:39
Rubido industrial area near the city of
1:11:41
Riverside, California. Body is found
1:11:43
near Aquamanza Road and Market Street by
1:11:46
a man who was out searching for aluminum cans. Found
1:11:48
Michelle's remains in a drainage ditch. She
1:11:51
was laying on her back, her blouse and shorts shredded.
1:11:53
She was covered in blood. Her genitals had been
1:11:56
quote, mutilated. So
1:11:58
much rage. ran to
1:12:00
a nearby factory to find help. Michelle's autopsy found
1:12:02
that she suffered massive trauma to both the anal
1:12:04
and vaginal areas, also stabbed
1:12:07
multiple times in the face, chest,
1:12:09
and buttocks. Had
1:12:11
ligature marks on her neck, suggesting strangulation.
1:12:14
Raped, tortured, strangled. Bill
1:12:16
would do this to a lot of women. They
1:12:18
would never be charged with this murder due to less
1:12:21
forensic evidence than will be present in multiple other area
1:12:23
murders, but as we'll see, it definitely
1:12:25
at least partially fits his M.O. A
1:12:27
month and a half later, December 11th, 1986, the
1:12:30
body of 24-year-old Charlotte Jean Palmer found
1:12:32
near Highway 74 in Romoland, census-designated
1:12:36
place south of Paris, about 25 miles
1:12:38
from the Gutierrez site. Charlotte's
1:12:40
body badly decomposed. The coroner could not
1:12:42
determine a cause of death. Bill
1:12:45
will be charged with this murder, but the charge later
1:12:47
dropped due to a lack of evidence. As
1:12:50
is often the case with serial killers, when they
1:12:52
have enough evidence to firmly convict someone of enough
1:12:54
murders to make sure that they're never gonna walk
1:12:56
free and they generally don't pursue expensive additional cases
1:12:59
that will be harder to prove in court. Six
1:13:01
months later, May 2nd, 1987, the dead body
1:13:03
of a 27-year-old woman, Martha
1:13:06
Best Young, found in Riverside
1:13:08
County in some hills east of I-15,
1:13:10
not far from Lake Elsinore. Her
1:13:12
body left naked in a spread eagle position.
1:13:15
Martha originally from Albuquerque, New Mexico. She had
1:13:17
a long history of sex work. Drugs were
1:13:19
found in her system. She'd
1:13:21
been reported missing the previous week, April 27th. She'd
1:13:24
actually been dead for about three weeks. Her
1:13:27
exact cause of death never determined due to
1:13:29
decomposition. Thought she died from
1:13:31
a combination of a fatal dose of methamphetamines and
1:13:34
strangulation. Bill suspected of
1:13:36
committing this murder, but again, not
1:13:38
charged. Early 1987, Bill
1:13:41
moves out of Bonnie's place after some type of
1:13:43
argument. Even though there were twin flames, in
1:13:46
June, he gets into a motorcycle accident. He
1:13:49
sadly survives. He's hospitalized for
1:13:51
three days. Bonnie takes pity on him, invites
1:13:53
him back so she can take care of
1:13:55
him. Twin flames reunited. January
1:13:58
18th, 1988, body of 20. 21-year-old
1:14:00
Lisa Lasek found at the bottom of
1:14:02
a cliff in the Manzanita
1:14:04
Flats area of the San Bernardino
1:14:07
National Forest. Unlike
1:14:09
most of the other victims who were white, Lisa was
1:14:11
black. She had been dead anywhere from two
1:14:13
to five days. Investigators could
1:14:15
not determine if she had been raped or strangled, but suspected
1:14:18
it, definitely stabbed in the
1:14:20
abdomen with a serrated knife, which was her
1:14:22
official cause of death. She
1:14:24
had repeatedly stabbed that same spot three to four
1:14:26
times, and also cut
1:14:29
off her right breast completely. Hopefully
1:14:32
she was dead when that happened, but sadly I doubt
1:14:34
it. Flashbacks for me
1:14:36
of the Chicago's Ripper crew. Lisa
1:14:39
had two sons who were just five and six years old when
1:14:41
she died. Lisa had another
1:14:43
one of the early victims. The bill is suspected of
1:14:45
killing one of the only victims whose body was found
1:14:48
outside Riverside County. He'll never be charged for or never
1:14:50
be convicted of this murder. When her
1:14:52
killer saw Lisa Lasek, she was standing on
1:14:54
the corner of 8th and 8th Streets in
1:14:56
front of a convenience store in San Bernardino. Lisa's
1:14:59
friend Connie also worked in there looking
1:15:01
for work. She spotted Lisa at the store, went over to say
1:15:03
hello at the same time a Dodge van pulled up next to
1:15:05
her. Connie took a look at the driver. He was
1:15:08
in his 30s, heavy set, stubble,
1:15:10
brown hair. Bill was
1:15:12
37 at this time. Brown hair did
1:15:14
typically have stubble on his face, was overweight.
1:15:18
Something felt especially off about this man to Connie. If
1:15:21
Bill was the killer, and he probably was, he had intentionally
1:15:23
driven an hour away from Lake Elsinore so
1:15:25
no one would recognize him. He offered Lisa
1:15:27
$100 for sex. Lisa
1:15:30
told Connie about the offer before she got into the van. She
1:15:32
thought it was too good to be true. Lisa said she was
1:15:34
going to the Palm Hotel with the guy. Connie
1:15:36
tried to remember the license plate as they drove off, only
1:15:39
got the last three numbers and would never see Lisa
1:15:41
again. April 29th, 1988. The
1:15:45
dead body of 37-year-old Linda Ann Ortega
1:15:47
found on a dirt road in Lake
1:15:49
Elsinore. Linda's found naked,
1:15:51
had been mutilated, and had been dead for
1:15:53
at least three days. Her autopsy found
1:15:55
high levels of alcohol and cocaine in her
1:15:57
blood. Again, Bill suspects that she was in the
1:15:59
van. Never convicted. These
1:16:02
are those three numbers, by the way, would
1:16:04
match three on his license plate though. From
1:16:08
the witness earlier, about nine months later, January
1:16:11
of 1989, sex worker named Rhonda Jetmore victim
1:16:13
of a violent attack. She was lucky to
1:16:15
survive. Bill definitely guilty
1:16:17
of this. He'll later be convicted. Bill
1:16:19
was cruising down Main Street in Lake Elsinore and
1:16:21
Bonnie station wagon. When he saw Rhonda, Bonnie
1:16:24
was a local again, real estate agent, her
1:16:26
vehicle, easily recognized around town. He
1:16:29
picked up Rhonda Jetmore in it, offered her 20 bucks
1:16:31
for sex, went to a vacant house down
1:16:33
the street that had no lights. When Rhonda
1:16:35
held out her hand for payment, Bill hands her a
1:16:37
single dollar because he's a piece of shit. When
1:16:40
Rhonda tries to protest, Bill attacks her, starts
1:16:42
to strangle her. Rhonda manages to
1:16:44
fight him off, run away. Two of her friends happen to
1:16:47
be driving by when she runs out of the vacant house.
1:16:49
One of them shoots at Bill. When he tries
1:16:51
to chase her, good on them. Hail Nimrod. Then
1:16:54
as he ran to his vehicle to drive off, they continue
1:16:57
to shoot, but no one hits him. That's
1:16:59
a bummer. The police never contact Bill
1:17:01
about his incident despite Rhonda making a report
1:17:03
to a sheriff's deputy and identifying the vehicle.
1:17:06
So fucked up, right? The complaints of
1:17:08
sex workers historically not taken very seriously,
1:17:10
unfortunately. Rhonda said
1:17:12
the man who wore metal glasses and
1:17:16
also wore a belt buckle that said Bill.
1:17:19
This combined with Lisa Lasek's friend Connie getting
1:17:21
those three digits off Bill's license plate could
1:17:23
have been enough to locate, catch him, excuse
1:17:25
me, convict him
1:17:27
for attempted murder and at
1:17:29
least one murder. A few
1:17:31
weeks later, local sex workers will tell the Riverside Sheriff's
1:17:33
Office that Rhonda was also the best friend of a
1:17:36
recent murder victim and likely the last person to
1:17:38
see that woman alive. The deputies were
1:17:40
instructed to direct her to call the sheriff's station in
1:17:42
Lake Elsinore for a phone interview. It was at the
1:17:44
end of her interview that she described how she was
1:17:46
attacked a couple weeks earlier. She thought
1:17:48
the assailant could be the person who killed her friend. The
1:17:51
deputy conducting the interview put her report into
1:17:53
two paragraphs at the end of a two-page
1:17:55
report and considered Rhonda's
1:17:57
statement quote off the subject.
1:20:00
worse. Another woman
1:20:02
said he was always offering to babysit and
1:20:04
was really careful and good with him. My
1:20:06
oldest girl would crawl to him the minute
1:20:08
he came in and she called him, hunky
1:20:10
bill. Struck me his odd that a
1:20:12
single man would do that, but
1:20:14
he told me his baby had died and I just assumed he meant by
1:20:16
crib death or that it was stillborn. My
1:20:19
God. Well, my kids were little. If
1:20:21
some single guy would have kept offering
1:20:23
to babysit, not a fucking chance in
1:20:26
hell. There was a chance in hell
1:20:28
that any single guy was going to babysit my kids. Yes,
1:20:30
women do horrible things to kids, you know,
1:20:32
as well, but statistically not fucking
1:20:34
nearly as often as dudes, like not
1:20:36
even close amongst people
1:20:39
convicted of committing sexual crimes against children, depending on
1:20:41
what data set you're looking at, you will find
1:20:43
that between 95 and 99% of
1:20:46
them are dudes or cock
1:20:48
walkers. Uh,
1:20:51
Bill would even occasionally babysit for local sex
1:20:53
worker named Darla Ferguson, who will be
1:20:55
one of his victims June 28th,
1:20:58
2009 same month, Bill and Bonnie breakup. Kimberly
1:21:00
little dead body is found near Cottonwood
1:21:02
Canyon in Lake Elsinore. It was
1:21:05
the day after her 28th birthday. Bill
1:21:07
had actually tried to start a relationship with Kimberly, but
1:21:09
she was not interested. Told Bill she had
1:21:11
a boyfriend and it seems that
1:21:13
Bill's response to this rejection was
1:21:15
to rape and strangle her and leave
1:21:18
her body in a desolate area covered by a bath
1:21:20
towel after dressing her body in one of his t-shirts.
1:21:23
Also exposed one of Kimberly's arms to reveal
1:21:25
her needle tracks. He'll expose
1:21:27
the arms of nearly all his future victims in this
1:21:29
way. One of his signature moves, right?
1:21:31
Like he's somehow proving that these fucking junkies
1:21:34
deserve whatever they got. Uh,
1:21:37
out of town papers picked up on the case
1:21:39
after Kimberly's murder. They connected her killing to some
1:21:41
of the other recent killings of sex workers that
1:21:44
I just went over. The press now nicknames the
1:21:46
possible serial killer responsible for these crimes as the
1:21:48
Riverside prostitute killer or the Lake
1:21:50
Elsinore killer. After murdering
1:21:53
Kimberly, Bill next tries to date a woman named
1:21:55
Joanne who had been court ordered
1:21:57
for some weekender duty. Uh, weekender
1:21:59
duty. allowed people to do work release instead of paying
1:22:01
a fine or serving jail time. And
1:22:03
part of Bill's current duties with the county now
1:22:06
was supervising these weekenders, which is insane.
1:22:09
He was working for the county in a law
1:22:11
enforcement adjacent manner no one figured out he had
1:22:14
served a decade in prison recently for
1:22:17
killing his baby daughter and also no
1:22:19
one aware that he's no longer meeting with his parole officer.
1:22:23
Bill offered to drive Joanne home every day. He told
1:22:25
her he was divorced because he caught his wife cheating
1:22:28
and that his ex-girlfriend recently thrown him out of her
1:22:30
house. Joanne later recalled, quote,
1:22:33
he said all he has been is
1:22:35
hurt by women. I
1:22:37
wonder if he counted his infant daughter, you
1:22:39
know, that he beat to death in that assessment. Like what's
1:22:42
her constant crying part of the hurt that
1:22:44
women cause him. Joanne
1:22:46
got a job at a local Circle K
1:22:48
convenience store. Bill started showing up during her
1:22:51
shifts, helping her stock products, claiming he was
1:22:53
a security guard, even put up posters, presenting
1:22:55
himself as a security guard. I
1:22:58
don't know what he means by that. The source doesn't really make it clear.
1:23:00
I wish I could see one of those posters. The
1:23:03
way the info is conveyed in the source, it makes it
1:23:05
seem like he was putting up posters of himself announcing
1:23:08
that he's a security guard. I
1:23:11
doubt he was doing. I mean, maybe that's fucking weird. Funny
1:23:13
if he actually did that. It
1:23:15
makes me pictures the kind of pictures the kind of posters I
1:23:17
had on my bedroom wall as a kid of like
1:23:19
my favorite basketball players, right? Carl Malone, Michael
1:23:22
Jordan, or posters of my
1:23:24
favorite wrestlers like the ultimate warrior. Very
1:23:27
funny to me to imagine those same posters, like
1:23:29
that style, but of random security guards. Just
1:23:32
this lineup of posters, you know, one's like
1:23:34
fucking Carl Malone, fucking viciously dunking on some
1:23:36
dude. Next one's Michael
1:23:38
Jordan, tongue out mid-flight after jumping
1:23:40
from the free throw line to dunk. And
1:23:43
he got the ultimate warrior, fucking roided
1:23:45
out, flexing his massive biceps. And
1:23:48
then, just a chubby, goofy looking,
1:23:50
dead-eyed motherfucker, you know, Bill Stuf,
1:23:52
security guard. A little taser
1:23:54
in one hand, maybe a thumbs up in the other hand.
1:23:58
Creepy Bill also met with Joanne's mother to try
1:24:00
and convince her to have Joanne
1:24:02
date him, which is super weird. She
1:24:06
knew her daughter had no feelings for
1:24:08
Bill. He's about to turn 39 and
1:24:10
he's doing that. You really are
1:24:12
fucking pathetic. Don't do that, by the way. Anybody listening,
1:24:15
if someone doesn't want to date you, don't
1:24:17
like go to their mom. Like, hey, can you
1:24:19
try and like, you know, just let her know that I'm a fucking cool guy.
1:24:21
That's so weird.
1:24:24
That's so sad. Bill was
1:24:26
persistent, but eventually, you know, he moves on, leaves
1:24:29
Joanne alone. However late was she when
1:24:32
she later found out who he really was. November 11th, 1989,
1:24:34
the dead body of 36 year
1:24:36
old Judy Lynn Angel turns up
1:24:38
near Tomesco Canyon Road, northwest of Lake Elsinore.
1:24:41
Judy found with no clothing, gashes
1:24:43
on her hands that were thought to be defensive wounds.
1:24:46
She suffered blows to her face. One
1:24:48
blow so serious, it was, you know, it
1:24:51
caved her head in. She was badly beaten. Estimated
1:24:54
that she had died within a day of the discovery of her body. Judy's
1:24:57
cause of death, blow to the head with a
1:25:00
blunt instrument. Police initially thought
1:25:02
she had been shot in the head because
1:25:04
she had such a large wound between
1:25:06
her eyes. My God. Judy, another
1:25:08
suspected but unconfirmed victim. Just
1:25:10
a month later, Bill kills again. For
1:25:12
sure. This next victim, the first of the
1:25:15
final 12 murders, Bill will be tried for. Previous
1:25:18
victim, Kimberly Little being the 13th conviction or,
1:25:20
you know, 13th murder he's tried for. December
1:25:23
13th, 1989, the body of 23 year old Christina, known as Tina
1:25:27
Lille, found on a dirt
1:25:29
road in the Quail Valley area of Riverside County. Found
1:25:32
by a couple looking at property sites. Tina
1:25:34
identified by her tattoos. She
1:25:36
had not been reported missing because her family law saw
1:25:38
her on the evening of December 12th or
1:25:40
since her family law seen her then. When investigators
1:25:43
came to identify her body, they discovered Bill's most
1:25:45
brutal crime scene yet. Tina
1:25:47
had been redressed after death in men's
1:25:49
clothing. Her clothing was missing. She
1:25:52
was wearing blue jeans, gym socks, a muscle
1:25:54
shirt with a map of Kings Canyon National
1:25:56
Park on it. Right. The
1:25:58
very same type of shirt. well the exact
1:26:01
shirt actually that Bill had bought
1:26:03
when he traveled there with Bonnie, right?
1:26:05
As I got that shirt as a souvenir, Tina is
1:26:07
now wearing this. Her
1:26:09
arms tucked inside the shirt, Tina
1:26:11
was beaten so badly she was found
1:26:14
quote bleeding from all facial orifices. She
1:26:17
only weighed 86 pounds, was intoxicated at
1:26:19
the time of her death. Investigators wonder why
1:26:21
the killer felt the need to attack her so viciously. Tina
1:26:24
had a rope burn on her neck, her cause
1:26:26
of death, a combination of ligature strangulation, four stab
1:26:28
wounds to the center of her chest, which
1:26:31
were not discovered until the autopsy. And
1:26:33
now for some especially brutal details. After
1:26:36
her death, her killer cut
1:26:38
off her clitoris and her left nipple and
1:26:42
stabbed her vagina multiple times, savage
1:26:44
attack. Then after death
1:26:46
inserted a large 95 watt
1:26:48
light bulb into her vagina.
1:26:51
It was found fully inside of her and still
1:26:53
intact, which means she must have spent
1:26:55
quite a bit of time with her dead body to
1:26:57
get that in without breaking it. So why the fuck would
1:26:59
he do that? Pubic
1:27:01
hairs, fibers removed from Tina's body, they
1:27:04
would be matched to hair and fibers found at the
1:27:06
Kimberly Little crime scene. As
1:27:08
mentioned earlier, Bill murdered and acquaintance he occasionally
1:27:10
babysat for 23 year
1:27:13
old Darla Ferguson and her body will be found next.
1:27:16
January 18th, 1990, woman's body
1:27:18
found among trees near a dirt road south
1:27:21
of Canyon Lake and Cottonwood Canyon. Mother
1:27:23
and son were out looking for firewood when they found
1:27:26
her. The boy told his mom he saw some legs in the
1:27:28
bushes. She backed up, saw the body,
1:27:30
they leave, called the authorities. Darla
1:27:32
Jane Ferguson publicly identified about a week later,
1:27:35
lasting alive 11 a.m. January
1:27:37
17th. Bill had strangled her with
1:27:39
his hands or some kind of soft material. The
1:27:42
strangulation so severe, Darla
1:27:44
almost completely bit off her tongue. Darla
1:27:47
also had ligature marks on her wrist. He then covered the
1:27:49
top half of her body with a trash bag. According
1:27:51
to investigators, he did this as if to
1:27:53
emphasize his opinion of her as a piece
1:27:55
of garbage. She was found about
1:27:58
a mile from the Kimberly Little crime scene. Investigators
1:28:00
also found tire tracks in the scene that were
1:28:02
matched to other tracks and other crime scenes in the
1:28:04
area where bodies of sex workers have been found. Bill
1:28:08
will kill another woman less than a month later.
1:28:11
February 8th, 1990, the body of 35-year-old
1:28:13
Carol Lynn Miller found in a grapefruit
1:28:17
orchard in Riverside County.
1:28:19
Carol has been missing since January. She
1:28:22
died from multiple stab wounds to the chest
1:28:24
and asphyxiation. This guy fucking loved to strangle
1:28:26
and stab. He wanted to
1:28:28
be up close and personal with these women when
1:28:31
they died, feel, watch the life, leave their bodies,
1:28:33
also inflict so much brutality upon them while they
1:28:35
died. Carol also had
1:28:37
a wound near her right nipple. Pubic hair
1:28:39
is found on her body that matched pubic hair
1:28:41
found in other crime scenes. This
1:28:44
dude's not even trying to hide forensic evidence, not at
1:28:46
all. Around the
1:28:48
time Bill also started dating a teenager named
1:28:50
Cheryl, his new twin flame, who
1:28:52
worked at the Circle K where
1:28:54
his former love interest, Joanne, still
1:28:56
worked. Bill is 40 years old and
1:28:59
he's dating a team. So that's, you know,
1:29:01
fucking great. Even the non-illegal stuff he does
1:29:03
is so creepy. Cheryl
1:29:06
had moved out of her family home, was
1:29:08
living with the store manager. Bill started, you
1:29:10
know, is still visiting the store almost daily.
1:29:12
Cheryl, excuse me, was described
1:29:14
as both extremely naive and slow.
1:29:17
She will say she was swept off her feet by
1:29:19
Bill. Oh boy. Bill
1:29:22
was living in an apartment in Lake Elles
1:29:24
North this time where he had another teen
1:29:26
girl living with him, Christina Seger. She'd
1:29:29
been kicked out of her house by forgetting pregnant. Christina
1:29:31
will later recall Bill frequently ranting against sex
1:29:34
workers. Despite seeming to
1:29:36
have such high morals when he first let
1:29:38
Christina move in, Bill once snuck into the
1:29:40
bathroom while Christina was taking a shower, took
1:29:42
some photos of her when she stepped out.
1:29:44
She tore the photos up, threw them away. Bill
1:29:46
acted like he was just playing a joke. It's
1:29:48
just a joke. It's just a
1:29:50
funny joke. Just sneaking in, taking nude pics of some
1:29:52
teenager crashing with you when they step
1:29:55
out of the shower. You know, okay, now
1:29:57
I have to admit that Pat Sajak's son had
1:29:59
at least two redeeming qualities. He
1:30:01
made a mean bowl of chili and a pretty
1:30:04
wonderful endearing sense of humor. Christina
1:30:07
will claim she never had any romantic relationship with
1:30:09
Bill and that she soon invited her boyfriend to
1:30:11
move in with them and
1:30:13
the three of them would live together for a
1:30:15
little while. March 17th, 1990, Bill
1:30:18
marries his teenage girlfriend Cheryl, who
1:30:21
also may have been intellectually
1:30:23
disabled. In Las Vegas after just
1:30:25
one month of dating, everyone can
1:30:27
only imagine the horrors she was subjected to on her wedding
1:30:29
night. Christina and her boyfriend
1:30:31
will move out a week later, left the
1:30:34
newlyweds, enjoy each other. Right before they left,
1:30:36
they overheard a heated argument, saw Cheryl leave
1:30:38
the bedroom with a red mark on her face. Cheryl
1:30:41
told them Bill had slapped her, right? Same old shit.
1:30:44
Soon after this, Bill is kicked out of his apartment for
1:30:46
failing to pay rent. Sounds like Bill,
1:30:49
blowing his money on sex workers that he also often
1:30:51
kills. Now the
1:30:54
couple moves in with Cheryl's parents and Rialso
1:30:56
in the adjacent San Bernardino County. Cheryl's mom
1:30:58
thought Bill was quote, all right, but very
1:31:00
temperamental. And she didn't understand
1:31:02
why he wanted to marry her young daughter. I
1:31:06
feel like Cheryl's mom may have also been intellectually
1:31:08
disabled. What do you mean? You
1:31:10
didn't understand why he wanted to marry
1:31:12
your young daughter. He
1:31:15
wanted to do that for the same reason I imagine
1:31:17
a lot of if not most older men married teenagers,
1:31:20
because they know that women a lot closer
1:31:22
to their ages with more life experience and
1:31:24
fully developed fucking brains will see
1:31:26
through their bullshit and how fucked up they are.
1:31:29
He wanted someone to control, right? He wanted
1:31:31
a warm female body to sexually use how
1:31:33
he wished who had not learned yet what
1:31:35
healthy boundaries are or what her sexual
1:31:37
rights are. But if my fucking
1:31:39
teenage daughter brought home a 40 year old, God, it
1:31:42
would be hard to not immediately violently assault him.
1:31:46
Also, what the fuck is going on with Cheryl's dad or
1:31:48
stepdad? Why are they allowing this? Bill
1:31:50
promised he would not marry Cheryl until she finished
1:31:52
high school. Also promised he's gonna
1:31:54
pay for a big wedding. He will do neither.
1:31:57
Bill did often borrow gas money from Cheryl's parents.
1:32:00
What? Even
1:32:02
without the abuse and killing, he's just such a skeevy loser.
1:32:04
And of course, he does not pay them back. Bill,
1:32:07
uh, controlling of Cheryl, uh-huh, verbally
1:32:09
abusive, in addition to hitting her,
1:32:11
no surprises. He would tell
1:32:13
her shit like she was too fat, never did anything
1:32:15
right, leave for hours late
1:32:17
at night, claim he was visiting friends or teaching
1:32:19
earthquake preparedness classes as part of his work with
1:32:22
the county while he's out, you know, with sex
1:32:24
workers. Cheryl's parents came to
1:32:26
dislike Bill so much they kicked a couple out
1:32:28
of their house in November of 1990. And now
1:32:30
the couple moves into a different apartment complex in Rialto.
1:32:34
Bill will wait several months before he kills again, and
1:32:36
then once he does kill again, he'll, uh, go on
1:32:38
a terror and kill three in three months. November
1:32:41
6, 1990, the body of 33-year-old
1:32:43
Cheryl Coker, found next to a dumpster,
1:32:46
excuse me, in an industrial complex in Riverside.
1:32:49
An employee was looking for a wood pallet near the
1:32:51
dumpster enclosure when he found her. Thought
1:32:53
he saw a mannequin's foot in a pile of debris. When
1:32:56
he touched it, the foot was soft. Uh,
1:32:58
now I realized obviously this the woman, uh, looked like
1:33:00
the woman's throat had been cut and one of her
1:33:03
breasts was again gone. Cheryl
1:33:05
was found naked lying on her back buried under
1:33:08
a pile of branches and gardening trash overflowing from
1:33:10
the dumpster enclosure. The wound
1:33:12
on her throat was so deep, it looked like
1:33:14
her throat had been cut, but actually it was
1:33:16
caused by strangulation with a rope. Uh, Cheryl also
1:33:18
had bruises, uh, other plates on her neck.
1:33:21
The killer made sure to pose her that she had, so
1:33:23
she had one out, uh, excuse me, one arm, you
1:33:25
know, out, face up, you know, palm, palm up, uh,
1:33:28
you know, just showcasing the needle marks. Cheryl,
1:33:31
uh, first victim found in the city of
1:33:33
Riverside. Two Riverside PD homicide
1:33:35
detectives independently decided to check out the
1:33:37
scene. Christine Kears, co-author of our main
1:33:39
source today and, uh, Mike Hearn. The
1:33:42
detectives noticed a used condom near the victim's feet.
1:33:44
A vice detective at the scene
1:33:46
suspected that the victim was Cheryl Coker. She'd
1:33:48
been reported missing three days earlier. Cheryl's
1:33:51
friends were worried because she had never disappeared before.
1:33:53
They claimed that Cheryl and her husband got into
1:33:55
a violent argument before she left. A
1:33:58
detective then found Cheryl's breast. about 50 feet
1:34:00
away on a sandy plateau, the
1:34:03
killer had removed it and then just fucking through it,
1:34:05
quote, like a frisbee, according to
1:34:07
one source. According
1:34:09
to authors, Keirah and St. Pierre, Cheryl killed November
1:34:11
4th, Bill left to use
1:34:14
condom at the crime scene. He had blood
1:34:16
in his semen because he had an STI
1:34:18
at the time. Something I'm sure he
1:34:20
brought home and infected his wife with and then probably blamed
1:34:22
her for that and beat her. Bill's
1:34:26
stepdad died around the time of Cheryl's murder. Bill
1:34:28
attended the funeral, but did not linger to spend time with
1:34:31
the family. He told them they had to leave because Cheryl
1:34:33
was pregnant. Did I mention that Cheryl was pregnant? Oh
1:34:35
yeah, Bill's gonna be a daddy again. What great
1:34:37
news. Hopefully, third
1:34:39
time's a charm and he changes up his parenting style
1:34:42
to include a slightly gentler
1:34:44
method of discipline other
1:34:46
than punches, torture, and murder. Bill
1:34:48
and Cheryl are still experiencing, of course, a lot of
1:34:51
marital problems. The main one was
1:34:53
that Bill was a psychopath. Also,
1:34:55
Bill was flirting with a bunch of women at their
1:34:57
apartment complex while at the same time being very controlling
1:34:59
of Cheryl. Bill was now
1:35:01
forbidding Cheryl to wear makeup or even curse. He
1:35:04
picked the clothing she wore, not allowing her to
1:35:07
wear red at all, because he
1:35:09
said it, quote, "'reminded him of all the blood he witnessed'
1:35:11
when he worked at that pediatric ward." Mm-hmm.
1:35:14
Bill continued disappearing late at night using the
1:35:16
excuse of teaching earthquake preparedness classes. Another
1:35:19
one of the strange activities was giving away random
1:35:21
women's clothing, jewelry, and purses to Cheryl and his
1:35:24
female acquaintances. Not suspicious
1:35:26
at all. They didn't
1:35:28
know this clothing was stolen from murder victims. Bill
1:35:31
will tell Cheryl that he either found the clothing or
1:35:33
that a coworker gave it to him. Bill
1:35:35
wasn't just taking clothes from victims. He was also collecting little
1:35:38
trophies. He would keep his
1:35:40
victim's driver's licenses and random papers found in their
1:35:42
purses. He would store jewelry and
1:35:44
purses taken from victims in cardboard boxes and
1:35:46
leave those at the workstation in the warehouse.
1:35:49
Sometimes officers would come to his workstation, choose
1:35:52
his phone, ask for his help, and
1:35:54
they would stay just a few feet from
1:35:56
evidence they were looking for to find the killer they were
1:35:58
tracking. Levin little sick

1:37:21
Did have a bruise on one side of her neck which
1:37:24
point to strangulation. Vice detective
1:37:26
brought books containing pictures riverside sex workers and
1:37:28
determined that the body mass to picture of
1:37:30
Susan Stern Field and then she was official
1:37:32
identified by her fingerprints. December.
1:37:34
Twenty Four Seasons Autopsy would confirm she
1:37:37
died of manual strangulation. According
1:37:39
to Cares and St. Pierre structures deep inside
1:37:41
the neck were crushed and hemorrhaged was required.
1:37:44
A large amount of pressure on the part
1:37:46
of the same. The
1:37:48
take appears mention the similarities in the two cases
1:37:50
to some of her coworkers. A patrol officer noted
1:37:52
their front of the Riverside Sheriff's office told him
1:37:55
they were working on a couple recent murders involving
1:37:57
sex workers as well. Here's. advisors
1:38:00
about the four recent sex worker homicides in
1:38:02
Riverside County. She was assigned to
1:38:04
contact the Sheriff's office to compare notes and
1:38:06
was then assigned to work all current and
1:38:08
future murders involving sex workers in their jurisdiction.
1:38:11
They didn't have a task force yet officially,
1:38:14
but headed in that direction for sure. January
1:38:17
7, 1991, Detective Kiers meets
1:38:19
with Detective Robert Creed from the Riverside Sheriff's
1:38:21
Office, the county sheriff's office. She
1:38:23
now learned that the RSO was working eight
1:38:25
sex worker homicides from the past few years.
1:38:28
Their most recent victim was Carol Miller, found
1:38:31
on February 8, 1990. Still
1:38:33
not enough evidence to conclusively determine the serial
1:38:35
killer was involved in these murders. The
1:38:38
suggestion that a serial killer was
1:38:40
responsible was actually rebuffed by Christine's
1:38:42
superiors initially. Still,
1:38:44
Detective Kiers and Creed request the
1:38:46
criminalists at the State Department of Justice Crime
1:38:49
Lab to compare trace evidence to
1:38:51
see if the victims are linked. RSO
1:38:53
had also reached out to Washington to see if
1:38:55
the victims might be connected to the Green River Killer
1:38:57
up there. Early suck
1:38:59
subject Gary Clean, Wayne Ridgeway, still
1:39:02
about a decade away from being caught. Excuse
1:39:07
me. January 19, 1991,
1:39:10
the body of 42-year-old Kathleen Leslie Puckett,
1:39:13
found near a major freeway seven
1:39:15
miles north of Lake Elsinore and an illegal dump
1:39:17
site off a dirt road. Bob
1:39:20
Creed from the RSO responded to this crime scene.
1:39:23
Kathleen had needle track marks on the backs of
1:39:25
her hands. She had a bruise on her forehead
1:39:27
and post-mortem abrasions on her heels and buttocks, likely
1:39:30
caused by her body being dragged. Cause
1:39:32
of death? Not obvious. Investigators
1:39:34
noticed that a tire track was found near her body.
1:39:37
An autopsy soon determined Kathleen died from
1:39:39
strangulation and asphyxia. There were signs
1:39:41
of manual strangulation and a sock had been stuffed into
1:39:44
her mouth blocking her airway. Kathleen
1:39:46
went by the names Kathleen Meline and
1:39:49
Carol Kathleen Swenson. Over
1:39:51
the past two years, Kathleen had
1:39:53
been charged with prostitution, possessing a
1:39:55
hypodermic needle and being under
1:39:57
the influence of a controlled substance. did
1:40:00
sex work in the University Avenue area.
1:40:03
Despite being a known drug user, had no
1:40:05
drugs or alcohol in her system. Kathleen,
1:40:08
seen at her sister's home in Riverside
1:40:10
on January 18th, told her sister
1:40:12
she was going to find a ride to go visit her kids in
1:40:14
Whittier, and she was last
1:40:16
seen on University Ave. about 10.30 p.m. January
1:40:19
19th, 1991. Now the Riverside Police
1:40:22
Department decides to mount a major effort to find
1:40:24
whoever is killing these women. Detective
1:40:26
Kiers recommends that the RPD
1:40:28
conduct surveillance on University Ave,
1:40:30
the primary sex worker hangout in the area. Detectives
1:40:33
would use unmarked vehicles and wear plain
1:40:35
clothes to observe sex work activity. Christine
1:40:38
approached sex workers, told them that she was
1:40:40
a homicide detective, needed their help with the
1:40:43
investigation. Many seemed willing to provide
1:40:45
information about suspicious clients and accepted her card
1:40:47
to call her if they saw her heard
1:40:49
anything else. This first
1:40:51
stakeout will last for two weeks, but no leads will
1:40:53
pan out from it. Around
1:40:55
this time, the State Department of Justice completes
1:40:57
a profile which analyzes what the Tina Leal
1:41:00
case revealed about the suspect. The
1:41:02
profile stated that the killer has a high degree of
1:41:05
self-control and a willingness to take the
1:41:07
required time to perform the mutilations. The
1:41:10
Tina Leal murder was methodical,
1:41:12
time-consuming, painstaking, and a
1:41:15
precise exercise in post-mortem mutilation
1:41:17
and the insertion of a foreign object. It
1:41:20
was done not only to humiliate and degrade
1:41:22
the victim, but also to shock and offend
1:41:24
those individuals who would discover the body. Okay,
1:41:28
I did not think of that angle with a lightbulb. It
1:41:30
might not have been done to satisfy any of
1:41:32
Bill's sexual urges. It was done, you know, probably
1:41:35
mainly to fuck with, to horrify, whoever
1:41:37
found the body. He just loved to
1:41:39
hurt whoever he could. Would
1:41:41
he have still done this type of shit if,
1:41:43
you know, Pat Sayjack would have stuck around?
1:41:45
Was it inevitable? Or did his
1:41:47
dad abandoning that family just break something inside of him? How
1:41:50
much this blood's on your hands, Pat Sayjack? March
1:41:54
2nd, 1991. State Department
1:41:56
of Justice criminalist Steve Skakovsky announces
1:42:00
comparison between the Cheryl Coker and
1:42:02
Susan Sternfield crime scenes. There
1:42:04
were similarities in carpet fibers and paint chips found on
1:42:06
the bodies. And he had
1:42:08
a potential tire match from the Coker crime scene to
1:42:10
the Kathleen Punkett crime scene. March
1:42:13
4, 1991, Detective Bob Creed and
1:42:16
Detective John Davis are designated to lead a
1:42:18
task force to catch the Riverside County Prostitute
1:42:20
Killer. So the task
1:42:22
force is formed. Why not Detective Christine Keir's
1:42:24
though? Alright, she was the one spearheading this shit, wasn't she?
1:42:28
Lucy Bida thinks some bullshit may have went on. Or
1:42:31
she wasn't the lead on the task force
1:42:33
because the Riverside County Sheriff's Office had
1:42:36
assembled the task force and Keir's worked
1:42:38
for the Riverside City Police Department. You
1:42:40
know, maybe that. At least there
1:42:42
is a task force now. Detective Keir's will be a big part of
1:42:44
it. March
1:42:46
27, 1991, Department of Justice
1:42:48
Criminalist Steve Skakovsky reports that trace evidence
1:42:50
and tire tracks linked more cases together.
1:42:53
Darla Ferguson, Tina Leal, Carol Miller,
1:42:56
Cheryl Coker, Susan Sternfield,
1:42:58
and Kathleen Puckett. Same
1:43:00
tire tracks found at these crime scenes. April
1:43:03
17, 1991, Detective from St. Croix,
1:43:05
Wisconsin calls the Riverside Sheriff's Office
1:43:08
to report that an inmate there had info about Carol Miller's
1:43:10
death. Some Sheriff's
1:43:12
Office task force members now fly out
1:43:15
to Wisconsin. They failed
1:43:17
to notify the Riverside Police Department about the development
1:43:19
until April 22, at which
1:43:21
point Detective Keir's flies out to join him. The
1:43:24
inmate was named Alex. He was in jail for a
1:43:26
felony weapons charge and was facing two eight-year enhancements to
1:43:28
his sentence. And he was hoping that by helping out
1:43:30
the investigators, you know, maybe they could knock some time
1:43:33
off of that sentence. He
1:43:35
knew Carol Miller by the name Carol Hanson. The
1:43:37
two have been arrested for burglary together back in 1988. He
1:43:41
learned about her murder and other murders while he
1:43:43
was drinking with Carol's ex-husband weeks earlier. Claimed
1:43:45
that there were actually two killers, but he only knew one.
1:43:49
He told investigators that Carol's ex-husband was a
1:43:51
long-haul trucker and would have been able to commit the
1:43:53
murders in Riverside County. And
1:43:55
he had a history of physically abusing Carol. Alex
1:43:58
had such specific knowledge about the murders. and
1:44:00
crime scene that the police thought he was the
1:44:02
second killer. Alex told
1:44:04
the police that a peeled, half-eaten grapefruit had
1:44:06
been found in the orchard beside Carol's body.
1:44:08
Only the killer, law enforcement, and the coroner's
1:44:11
office knew that because the records had been
1:44:13
sealed. The task force
1:44:15
obtained a warrant and Carol's ex-husband
1:44:17
was arrested now April 25th. Investigators
1:44:19
asked him how he would know about the grapefruit
1:44:21
if he wasn't the killer. He explained that he
1:44:23
called the coroner's office, identified himself, then
1:44:26
asked for info, and someone mailed him a copy
1:44:28
of the report. Whoops, sorry about
1:44:30
that. And then he had
1:44:32
talked to Alex about all of this shit at the bar. So
1:44:34
damn it, all the details Alex knew were found in
1:44:36
the report. He was full of shit. Carol's
1:44:39
ex-husband passed a polygraph, Alex failed one,
1:44:42
and now he'll receive an extra 10 years. That
1:44:44
had to do with sense for trying to
1:44:46
frame Carol's ex-husband over some bullshit in an
1:44:48
attempt to reduce his sense. Holy backfire. April
1:44:53
27th, 1991, 24-year-old Cherie Michelle Passour
1:44:55
is found dead outside the Concord
1:44:57
Family Bowling Center in Riverside. Seemed
1:45:01
like the killer had read a newspaper article about
1:45:03
a trip to Wisconsin by investigators, and
1:45:05
the next day reacted by leaving a body in a very
1:45:07
public place. I would have
1:45:09
thought Bill would have been relieved to
1:45:12
think investigators were barking at the wrong tree. But
1:45:14
I guess that didn't fit into his little game like he wanted.
1:45:16
Didn't stroke his ego the way he wanted. Cherie
1:45:19
was found completely naked with no purse, no ID,
1:45:22
she was placed on her back in a flower bed on the back
1:45:24
wall of the bowling alley. Arms
1:45:26
were at her side, her palms, you know, face
1:45:28
up to expose needle marks on her arms. She
1:45:30
had a few scrapes on her backside and a small
1:45:33
bruise, otherwise no injuries. There were
1:45:35
shoe prints on the ground, some from the killer, others
1:45:37
from a crowd of 40 or so people who gathered
1:45:39
outside the bowling alley to check out the body. Some
1:45:42
automatic sprinklers had washed away evidence, but investigators
1:45:44
still found tire tracks at the scene, and
1:45:46
seaming from two men was found inside Cherie's
1:45:49
body. The killer had not mutilated
1:45:51
the corpse as he had in other cases, probably because
1:45:53
it was such a public place. The
1:45:55
pathologist listed the cause of death as undetermined because
1:45:57
there was such little trauma. Sherry
1:46:00
Passour, almost completely deaf, because her
1:46:02
mom contracted rubella during pregnancy. She
1:46:06
wore hearing aids and communicated through sign language and
1:46:08
was recognized by a local police officer. She was
1:46:11
well-liked, she was a loving, kind person, no known
1:46:13
enemies. Detectives looked for
1:46:15
a suspect among her associates but found none, which
1:46:17
reinforced their belief that she was another victim of
1:46:19
the serial killer. Bill
1:46:22
Suff had a disturbing connection to Sherry. He
1:46:24
had met Sherry's mother, Joan Passour, when he
1:46:26
was assigned a weekender duty. Bill
1:46:29
approached her at the county building and asked if she wanted to
1:46:31
work with him once they got to the warehouse. Joan
1:46:34
thought Bill was friendly and happy-go-lucky. Bill
1:46:37
also liked to get gas at the gas station near
1:46:39
the Concourse bowling alley, which was also where he did
1:46:42
bowl, where he participated in the bowling league with his
1:46:44
coworkers. And I bet he loved going
1:46:46
there to bowl after her body was found to
1:46:49
hear, you know, people talking about her murder. July
1:46:51
4th, 1991, the body of 37-year-old Sherry Ann Latham, now
1:46:56
found in a desolate area overlooking Ners
1:46:58
815 in Lake Elsinore. Sherry's
1:47:00
found naked, partially decomposed, and some weeds just
1:47:02
off Grape Street. Location was
1:47:04
within eyesight of two earlier crime scenes.
1:47:08
There was no visible trauma, but her cause of
1:47:10
death was determined to be manual or soft strangulation.
1:47:13
And so violent with some victims, not
1:47:15
nearly as brutal as others. Clearly
1:47:17
had some triggers that really set him off from time to
1:47:19
time. Sherry was a sex
1:47:21
worker from San Bernardino. She had a drug and
1:47:23
prostitution charges on a record, outstanding arrest warrants at
1:47:25
the time of her death. During
1:47:27
the final months of her life, she lost a significant
1:47:30
amount of weight due to drug addiction, also dyed her
1:47:32
hair because she was hiding from the police. Sherry
1:47:35
was known for wearing bright makeup, which earned her
1:47:37
the nickname of Rainbow. After
1:47:39
the murder of Kathleen Puckett back in January, Sherry
1:47:41
is one of several sex workers who spoke to
1:47:43
the Californian in Lake Elsinore. Sherry
1:47:45
said she used the buddy system. We
1:47:47
take care of each other here. If we're gonna
1:47:49
go off somewhere with a date, we make sure to let someone
1:47:51
know. Sherry's boyfriend told the
1:47:53
police that she was always cautious. She
1:47:55
had him watch the cars she got into, and normally took
1:47:58
her clients to the same place. She
1:48:00
disappeared on July 2nd. She was picked up by a stranger
1:48:02
who drove off in the opposite direction she usually went. And
1:48:05
that was the last time her boyfriend saw her alive. He
1:48:07
provided a partial description of the driver and a description
1:48:10
of the vehicle. The task force would
1:48:12
do more surveillance work now based on these details for
1:48:14
the next week. They established
1:48:16
two dozen serious potential suspects but
1:48:18
Bill Suff not among them. Just
1:48:21
24 other pieces of shit who also hated
1:48:23
women. What the task force
1:48:25
didn't know yet was that Sherry hung out near that local
1:48:28
Circle K. And Bill, son
1:48:30
of Sajak, likely met her
1:48:32
there when he was hanging around the store.
1:48:34
Sherry had scratched Bill's face and arms during the attack
1:48:36
and his associates noticed he looked beat up when he
1:48:38
showed up to work. Bill said
1:48:40
he got scratched when he broke up a
1:48:42
fight between two dudes, fucking big muscular dudes,
1:48:45
and some woman at Kaiser Hospital. He
1:48:47
claimed he was just there for some allergy medicine or
1:48:50
sometimes he would say back depending on who he's talking to. He said
1:48:52
that when he accidentally pushed one man down, you know,
1:48:54
fucking he didn't even know his own strength. You know,
1:48:57
easily push one guy down and then the
1:48:59
guy's wife jumped on him and scratched his face up. Not
1:49:02
the worst cover story. Maybe pick allergies
1:49:04
or back though. Stick with one. Always
1:49:07
amazed at how some of these guys who are so sloppy with
1:49:09
their murders and lies take so long to get caught. There
1:49:12
are some new developments in Bill's personal life this month.
1:49:14
Two of Sherry's friends had moved in with the
1:49:17
Suffs, Terry and Jeremy. Sherry
1:49:19
met Terry at work. Terry told her that
1:49:21
Jeremy lost a job. They were considering moving out of the
1:49:23
state to live with his family. Sherry invited them to come
1:49:25
live with her instead and said Terry could
1:49:27
help her take care of the baby. July
1:49:30
26, that's right, there's a baby.
1:49:32
1991, Bridget and Suff is born.
1:49:34
Bill's third child, Cassine,
1:49:36
his wife, coworkers, and friends didn't
1:49:39
know about the previous two, or at least not the truth. Bridget,
1:49:42
nicknamed Breanne, was a fussy baby, cried through
1:49:44
the night. Father of the year,
1:49:46
Bill, would become frustrated by the
1:49:48
baby's crying and would often get up in
1:49:51
the middle of the night and carry her into the living room
1:49:53
and just leave her there until the morning. Terry
1:49:55
and Jeremy thought he was rough with her
1:49:57
and soon they started to notice bruises on
1:50:00
her face. So much for Bill changing
1:50:02
up his parenting style. Terry and
1:50:04
Jeremy also felt like Cheryl didn't seem to know what
1:50:07
to do with the baby. Bill
1:50:10
will kill another woman less than a month after
1:50:12
his daughter was born. Not going to slow him down.
1:50:14
August 16, 1991, body
1:50:17
of 27-year-old Kelly Marie Hammond found in
1:50:19
a gravel alley in Corona, California. The
1:50:21
Corona police thought she might be one of the serial killer
1:50:23
victims, so they called in the task force. Detective
1:50:26
Christine Kears recognizes Kelly right away as a
1:50:28
sex worker she had talked to from University
1:50:30
Ave. Kelly had recently been attacked
1:50:32
by a man with a fucking hammer in another
1:50:35
incident. God, the lives
1:50:38
these poor women lead, right? No moral
1:50:40
judgments and having sex for
1:50:42
money. Just pity that they encounter some of
1:50:44
the worst, biggest, most cowardly woman-hating piece of
1:50:46
shit on the planet. Kelly
1:50:49
was found naked. She was posed in a kneeling
1:50:51
position that exposed her genitals. One of her hands
1:50:53
was positioned palm up to expose her inner arm
1:50:55
like with so many other victims. There was no
1:50:58
obvious signs of violence on her body. Detective
1:51:00
Kears went back to the University Ave to
1:51:02
find a woman named Kelly Victoria Jewel Whitecloud,
1:51:05
who was Kelly Hammond's friend, and Kelly
1:51:07
W. would claim that she had interacted
1:51:09
with the possible killer. Kelly W. said
1:51:11
that she and Kelly H. had been working on
1:51:13
University Ave the previous night. Kelly
1:51:16
H. was intoxicated to the point that she could barely
1:51:18
walk, also was sick with the cold.
1:51:20
Around 10 p.m., a gray van pulled up next to
1:51:22
them. The driver was a chubby man, about 40, light
1:51:25
brown hair, small mustache, stubble,
1:51:27
metal frame glasses. He
1:51:30
immediately started talking about how he was mad at his
1:51:32
dad, how he'd abandoned him, how
1:51:34
his dad was the reason he could never watch Wheel of Fortune. Or
1:51:38
that never happened. Instead, he quickly offered Kelly W. $20
1:51:42
for sex. $20 again. That
1:51:44
seems low for sex. That feels very
1:51:46
low. Kelly W. agreed, got into the
1:51:48
van, which had a gray interior and two captain's chairs
1:51:50
up front with a thick black book,
1:51:52
looked like a Bible on the center console. Kelly
1:51:55
asked him to buy her some food at a nearby
1:51:57
McDonald's before they had sex. He agreed, started driving there.
1:52:00
Kelly been kicked out of the same McDonald's before for
1:52:02
doing drugs in the bathroom In
1:52:04
the drive-through this time she said she emphasized
1:52:06
her abrasive personality and was rude to the
1:52:09
employees and this seemed to embarrass the
1:52:11
driver Once he got to the
1:52:13
parking lot He told her that now it wasn't fair for him
1:52:15
to pay 20 bucks for sex since he had spent four dollars
1:52:17
on her food And he was now
1:52:19
only going to pay her ten dollars I
1:52:22
think you might have saved sixteen dollars right bill. That's a
1:52:25
fucked up math you're doing He's such
1:52:27
a cheap Weasley fuck on
1:52:29
top of all of his other terrible qualities Kelly
1:52:32
refused to accept that price also said that they could go to
1:52:34
her house if they were gonna have sex Man
1:52:36
said he didn't want to go to her house He
1:52:38
wanted to have sex in his van near the University
1:52:40
of California Riverside campus Kelly was
1:52:42
also starting to get creeped out by this guy now. He
1:52:45
was starting to give off bad vibes She was worried about
1:52:47
what he really wanted to do so she
1:52:49
tells him she's not gonna do the date for ten bucks Gets
1:52:51
out of the van the man after calling
1:52:53
her some names now drives across the street to Kelly
1:52:55
H Kelly W calls out to Kelly
1:52:57
H not to get in the van with this guy because
1:52:59
he's a fucking creep and also only gonna
1:53:02
pay Ten bucks Kelly H who
1:53:04
is pretty hammered right just smiles waves at her gets
1:53:06
into the van and they drive off Kelly
1:53:09
W continued working until midnight then
1:53:11
goes home even though Kelly H still hadn't showed
1:53:13
back up very unusual 90
1:53:16
on the next morning. She goes looking for Kelly H in a
1:53:18
field at 6th Street in Park Ave Where
1:53:20
Kelly lived on the street in a
1:53:22
fucking cardboard box with her boyfriend Russell
1:53:25
Russell said that Kelly hadn't come home for the night. This
1:53:28
is also sad Kelly W
1:53:30
now goes the detective cures to some different car lots try
1:53:32
and find a van that looks similar to the one she
1:53:34
saw The suspect driving it they know the one she got
1:53:36
in she thought the van was a Chevy
1:53:38
Astro She also worked with a
1:53:40
police sketch artist and detective cares attaches the
1:53:43
composite drawing to a flyer Was
1:53:45
Kelly's information that they now hand out? Meanwhile
1:53:47
bill continues to kill September
1:53:50
13th 1991 the body of 31 year old Catherine or Catherine Excuse
1:53:54
me Annette McDonald found in
1:53:56
a developing residential area of Lake Elsinore
1:53:59
near Railroad Canyon Road road and Summerhill
1:54:01
Drive, about a mile and a half from
1:54:03
the Sherry Latham crime scene. Catherine
1:54:05
found naked and she had been mutilated. Police
1:54:08
found footprints and tire tracks and the dirt near her
1:54:10
body. Like some other victims, Catherine
1:54:12
stabbed in the center of her chest, stabbed
1:54:15
five times in the outer pubic area as well.
1:54:18
Her right breasts missing again, not
1:54:21
found at the crime scene this time. There
1:54:23
were no tracks to indicate that an animal had dragged it
1:54:25
away, which meant the killer probably took it with him. Catherine's
1:54:28
cause of death, same as many
1:54:30
other victims, was multiple sharp object wounds
1:54:32
and compressions of the throat. Unlike
1:54:35
other victims, Catherine was 12 to 13 weeks
1:54:37
pregnant when she died. She
1:54:39
was also black, which scared more women in the
1:54:41
area since a recent newspaper article included info
1:54:43
that the serial killer only targeted white women. A
1:54:47
psychological expert now expressed the opinion
1:54:49
that the killer was reacting to that newspaper
1:54:51
article. He wanted to make sure
1:54:53
that no woman in the area, at least no woman working
1:54:55
in the streets, white, black, or otherwise was going
1:54:57
to feel safe. On the
1:55:00
day Catherine's body was found, two task force members came
1:55:02
to the county warehouse to pick up supplies. They
1:55:04
needed to use the phone at Bill's workstation.
1:55:06
He then watched them as they were ordered
1:55:09
to respond to his crime scene in Lake
1:55:11
Elsinore. Ah, he must have been so excited. Now
1:55:14
this is the fucking, this is a crazy detail from the story.
1:55:17
Remember when I told you that you didn't want to be eaten
1:55:19
chilly when you were listening to this episode?
1:55:22
Next day, September 14th, Bill attends the annual
1:55:24
county employee picnic and participates again in the
1:55:26
chilly cook off. Members
1:55:28
of the serial killer task force attend this
1:55:30
cook off and eat his chili. Now
1:55:33
fucked up is this, two top
1:55:35
people involved in the case, according
1:55:37
to our main sources authors believe
1:55:40
that Bill put Catherine's missing breast
1:55:42
into the fucking chili. This
1:55:45
motherfucker may have actually
1:55:47
fed some of the detectives working on his
1:55:49
cases, some of the meat from one of
1:55:51
his victims. Got
1:55:53
new chili ethical dilemma question. Let's say that you
1:55:55
have a real more problem. Let's hope
1:55:58
that you have a real more problem with eating chili. made
1:56:00
with a murdered woman's breast meat. But,
1:56:04
best fucking show you've ever, the best show you've
1:56:06
ever had by far. Would you still?
1:56:08
I'll stop. Uh, I
1:56:10
wish I knew if he won that year with that recipe. He
1:56:13
probably did. He won several years in a row. That might have been another one
1:56:15
of the years he won. Oh my God. October
1:56:17
11th, 1991. Department of
1:56:19
Justice criminalist, Faye Springer, called
1:56:21
to inform the task force that the light brown and
1:56:23
blonde hairs found on Catherine's body most likely came from
1:56:26
the killer. Two weeks later,
1:56:28
October 25th, Springer determines that the same
1:56:30
type of hairs found on enough victims
1:56:33
were able to be, you know, for him to conclude that
1:56:35
they belong to the same serial killer. Right?
1:56:38
Same hair found on multiple bodies. As
1:56:40
investigators are getting closer and closer to catching
1:56:42
their killer, Bill finally is put on law
1:56:45
enforcement's radar, but sadly, not
1:56:47
for something to do with sex workers. More
1:56:49
infant abuse. Send law
1:56:51
enforcement to chat with this walking pile of
1:56:54
shit. October 25th, 1991. Bill
1:56:57
and Cheryl's baby, Brianne, is screaming and
1:56:59
crying uncontrollably. Cheryl demands that Bill drive
1:57:01
them to the hospital. Bill
1:57:04
tells the doctor he thinks Brianne probably was cold,
1:57:06
rather flu. You know, he used to work with kids a lot. He knows. The
1:57:09
doctor initially thinks probably an ear infection. So
1:57:12
he draws blood for further testing. And
1:57:15
then the test results reveal that
1:57:17
Bridgette, quote, was suffering from such
1:57:19
severe child abuse that
1:57:21
she probably would have died if not hospitalized
1:57:23
and treated that very day. Motherfucker.
1:57:28
Brianne had severe brain damage, blood
1:57:30
clots in her brain, bleeding inside
1:57:32
her eye, bruises on her head,
1:57:34
four broken ribs, and
1:57:36
a broken left leg. How
1:57:39
did the doctor not immediately notice that shit
1:57:41
before the blood test? She
1:57:44
was diagnosed with shaken baby syndrome. Did
1:57:46
you just find out that you hate this guy even more than
1:57:49
you already did? I didn't think it was possible
1:57:51
before that detail to hate him more, but I hate him more now.
1:57:54
Like I literally wouldn't fucking care if this
1:57:56
guy was taken out of prison tomorrow and
1:57:58
just taken out of the desert. where he was
1:58:00
held down and somebody with a fucking
1:58:03
spoon just carved out both his eyeballs.
1:58:05
Then a bunch of fire ants poured
1:58:08
into his eye sockets, along with some sugar
1:58:10
to feed him so they can live in there for a while. And
1:58:12
a gauze taped over his eyes, or what
1:58:15
used to be his eyes, to keep those ants inside of his
1:58:17
head. Then his dick
1:58:19
is cut off. The wound is cauterized and
1:58:21
his dick is shoved into his mouth. Luckily
1:58:23
it's real tiny so he won't joke. Then his
1:58:25
mouth is taped shut so his dick has to stay in there. He
1:58:28
can still breathe through his nose. Then, balls
1:58:31
are cut off, shoved up his ass. Still
1:58:34
not done. Nipples are cut
1:58:36
off next. Big metal hoops are inserted into
1:58:38
the wounds, like around a rib, so he
1:58:40
can't rip out the hoop. A
1:58:42
chain is attached to the hoops, anchored to the
1:58:44
desert floor, and now finally,
1:58:46
maybe like a thousand scorpions are
1:58:49
placed all around him. Did I mention he's naked? He's
1:58:51
naked for this. And because of the chain, he's stuck
1:58:53
with the scorpions. And these scorpions, they're
1:58:55
not the most venomous kind, so it's going to take a
1:58:57
lot of things to kill him. Like he might live like
1:58:59
that for a few days. I
1:59:01
know that was a lot. But I really
1:59:03
feel like if someone deserves that fate, it's him. At
1:59:07
this time, Cheryl's friends Terry and Jeremy, still
1:59:09
living in the apartment, everyone denies abusing Brianne
1:59:11
or seeing any abuse when they're first questioned
1:59:13
by the Rialto police. Bill,
1:59:16
that fucking weasel, says
1:59:18
in his police statement, I'm
1:59:20
not saying that Cheryl has
1:59:22
never shaken the baby. I've
1:59:24
never seen her do it. Like he immediately starts trying to throw his wife
1:59:26
under the bus. Bill
1:59:29
turns around, convinces Cheryl that he thought
1:59:32
Jeremy was probably the perpetrator because
1:59:34
he didn't feel comfortable around him. Terry
1:59:37
now admits that she did see Bill lose his temper with
1:59:39
Cheryl and the baby and that she had seen him shake
1:59:41
the baby before. Bill tells
1:59:43
the police he had waited 41 years to
1:59:45
have a baby and he would never hurt his baby.
1:59:49
So he agrees to take a polygraph. It comes back
1:59:51
inconclusive. And then the Rialto police end
1:59:53
their child welfare investigation with no charges
1:59:55
filed. What the fuck? criminal
2:00:00
records of these fuckheads and
2:00:02
find out if, I don't know, one of them had already spent
2:00:04
a decade in prison for beating a baby to death. Even
2:00:08
though the technology was there in 1991 to do
2:00:10
that, your arrest record in one state could not
2:00:12
unfortunately be real easily accessed by law enforcement in a
2:00:14
different state and a lot of times they just wouldn't
2:00:16
look. Which I guess
2:00:18
is the person's line, you know, it's tricky to like assume that
2:00:20
they were in these other states. Just
2:00:23
frustrating. The stuffs now kicked Terry and
2:00:25
Jeremy out. They were frustrated. They were being
2:00:28
blamed for the abuse but, you know, couldn't convince Cheryl. It
2:00:30
was actually Bill that did it. Breanne,
2:00:33
baby Breanne, thank God, not sent back
2:00:35
home. It's one good thing that comes out
2:00:37
of this. She put up for adoption. No
2:00:39
one knows where she ended up or if she recovered, right,
2:00:42
from the brain damage. Aye,
2:00:44
aye, aye. October 30, 1991, the
2:00:46
body of 35-year-old Deliah Zamora Wallace,
2:00:48
Bill's next victim, found across the road from
2:00:50
a park and ride close to Highway 60,
2:00:53
east of the Riverside San Bernardino County lines. She
2:00:56
found at 7.15 a.m. by a guy driving to work. Deliah
2:00:59
found fully clothed, investigators,
2:01:02
and I don't think it's Deliah, Delilah, the
2:01:04
way it's spelled. Deliah
2:01:06
found fully clothed, investigators theorized the killer
2:01:09
hadn't first noticed the park and
2:01:11
ride lock, then probably panicked when commuters started
2:01:13
to show up. Deliah's right
2:01:15
arm pulled out again, you know, palm up,
2:01:17
exposed to a show of needle marks on
2:01:19
her inner arm, indicating she was a
2:01:21
victim of the same serial killer. This
2:01:23
detail still had not been mentioned in the newspapers. Excuse
2:01:27
me, she had bruising on the front of her neck, no signs
2:01:29
of trauma, Deliah identified by her
2:01:31
fingerprints, a resident of Riverside, and
2:01:33
a mother to five kids. While
2:01:35
the investigation of the park and ride lock not
2:01:37
fruitful, the task force learned that
2:01:39
the shoe prints from the Catherine McDonald crime scene
2:01:41
had been identified, and they
2:01:43
were an athletic shoe called Pro Wings, only
2:01:46
sold at Payless. So the serial
2:01:49
killer, not just a dirtbag, he's
2:01:51
a stylish gentleman. Sorry,
2:01:53
uh, Bill had murdered Deliah on October 29th
2:01:55
in the middle of the fucking child abuse
2:01:57
investigation into him. During one
2:01:59
hot visit show question bill about a denim handbag
2:02:02
in his van. He said his boss gave
2:02:04
it to him and he was gonna give it to her. Cheryl
2:02:06
saw that the bag contained a wallet,
2:02:08
a phone book, makeup, and personal papers.
2:02:11
Pretty fucking odd things to be in there for a gift. Unfortunately
2:02:14
she does not notice that the driver's license and the
2:02:16
purse belonged to Delia Zamora. Bill
2:02:18
also had new scratches on his face. His
2:02:21
roommate Terry questioned about it, you know, before he
2:02:23
gets kicked out. And he said,
2:02:25
you know, he scratched his face on a wooden
2:02:27
pallet at work. It's so clumsy. This
2:02:30
fucking moron just keeps getting away with murder literally.
2:02:33
December 23rd 1991, the stuffs move
2:02:35
into a new apartment in Colton, San Bernardino County.
2:02:37
While packing, Bill and Cheryl got into a fight.
2:02:39
He slapped her in the face. She
2:02:42
told him she wanted a divorce and her brother picked
2:02:44
her up and took her to her, their parents home.
2:02:47
Bill asked Cheryl's parents to convince her to
2:02:49
come back and those fucking idiots told
2:02:51
their daughter to try to work things out with the man
2:02:54
they knew had possibly, if not probably, beat their
2:02:56
grandchild so badly. Right? The
2:02:58
kid who ended up with brain damage was taken away by the state.
2:03:01
It doesn't feel like there are a preposterous amount of
2:03:03
idiots in the story. Okay,
2:03:06
you know, maybe, maybe Bill just
2:03:08
really was such a highly skilled
2:03:10
manipulator. You know, these slimy sociopaths, they can trick the
2:03:12
best of us. But my God, December
2:03:15
4th 1991, Bill gets into a traffic accident,
2:03:17
which dented the passenger side of his murder
2:03:19
van. Bill was at fault, was
2:03:21
driving without a current license, registration or
2:03:23
insurance, but still this does not put him
2:03:25
on police's radar. December
2:03:28
23rd 1991, the body of 39 year old Eleanor Ojeda
2:03:31
Casares founded an Orange Grove
2:03:33
in Riverside. Around 1 20 p.m. Detective Christine
2:03:37
Kiers gets a phone call requesting her to respond
2:03:39
to the Orange Grove's off Victoria Avenue, which was
2:03:41
just a few blocks from her house. And
2:03:43
she worried now that the killer was taunting her, trying
2:03:46
to send her a message, but put her down to hopefully
2:03:48
just being coincidence. A worker found
2:03:50
the body while he was driving on the service road bordering
2:03:52
the Orange Grove's body only about 10 feet
2:03:54
from the road. The victim lying spread eagle
2:03:56
in the middle of four of the four or
2:03:58
a bro four excuse me of the orange groves.
2:04:01
She was naked, but a black coat was covering her
2:04:03
face, her right breast again
2:04:06
gone, cut off in the same manner as
2:04:08
other victims, and she had a stab wound at the
2:04:10
center of her chest. There were shoe prints and
2:04:12
tire tracks from two types of tires around her body.
2:04:15
The severed breast was found two rows over with
2:04:17
no footprints, indicating the
2:04:19
killer had thrown it. No
2:04:21
chili cook-off to prep for this
2:04:23
time, I guess, or maybe he saved some meat from
2:04:25
the last breast to use for his
2:04:27
next batch of award-winning chili. When
2:04:30
the coat was removed from the victim's detective,
2:04:32
Cares recognized her as Eleanor Cazares, a woman
2:04:34
she had befriended during the investigation. Eleanor's
2:04:37
face had been badly beaten. Eleanor's sister told Christine
2:04:39
that she had last talked to her sister about
2:04:42
11, 11.30 a.m. Eleanor had asked to borrow 10
2:04:44
bucks, said she would go to work around
2:04:47
7 p.m., return them with the money then. She
2:04:49
told Eleanor she would loan her the money, but she
2:04:51
would have to come get it. Eleanor
2:04:53
said she'd get a ride, but then never showed up.
2:04:56
In the past, Eleanor told her sister she had a
2:04:58
feeling she knew who the killer was and she was,
2:05:01
quote, working on it. Damn it. Eleanor's
2:05:04
cause of death, manual strangulation and a stab wound
2:05:06
to the heart. Also had abrasions on
2:05:08
her mouth, face, neck and wrists and
2:05:10
contusions on her shoulder, chest and hip. Those
2:05:13
were defensive wounds. December 23, Bill's
2:05:15
wife, Cheryl, wakes up between 12.45
2:05:17
and 1 p.m. because she worked a
2:05:19
late shift the night before Bill was off
2:05:21
work for Christmas. Yeah, these two
2:05:23
are back together. Good job, Cheryl's parents. Cheryl
2:05:26
noticed that Bill had even more scratches, so many scratches
2:05:28
lately on his face and
2:05:30
he claimed one of their cats did it.
2:05:33
Cheryl has given Bill a new pair of Converse two
2:05:35
weeks before the murder and instead of pro wings like
2:05:37
the previous crime scenes, Converse shoe prints found
2:05:40
at this new crime scene. Bill
2:05:42
had also purchased two new uniroil tires for
2:05:44
his van, but the other two tires still
2:05:46
Yokohama brand during the investigation task force received
2:05:48
news that the tire tracks from the McDonald
2:05:51
crime scene were Yokohama tires. Christmas
2:05:53
Day 1991 now, apartment manager
2:05:55
Rebecca Rob host a party in
2:05:57
her apartment, which Bill and Cheryl attend. group
2:06:00
decides to watch a Christmas movie, silence
2:06:02
of the lamps. That
2:06:05
is what they watch. Bill randomly said that girl was
2:06:07
stupid for getting in the van and everyone present thought
2:06:09
it was strange for him to say that, but
2:06:11
didn't make too much of it at the time. As a fan of
2:06:15
that movie, that girl was stupid for getting in the van. I'm
2:06:18
guessing millions of people had that same thought,
2:06:20
but I guess the way he said it struck him as weird.
2:06:23
January 8, 1992, a local
2:06:25
paper dedicates a front page article to
2:06:27
the murders featuring a statement from Riverside
2:06:29
Police Chief, Linford L. Sunny Richardson. Sunny
2:06:32
stated that Riverside shouldn't add to the
2:06:34
current reward fund because it would appear
2:06:36
desperate and lessen the importance of other
2:06:38
murder investigations. Detective Keers now
2:06:40
thought the killer might take that as an insult to
2:06:43
his intelligence and could react by killing
2:06:45
another victim. Christine believed they could
2:06:47
catch him if they sent out police units with
2:06:49
her flyer, the flyer that she had done up
2:06:51
of the composite drawing of his face, and
2:06:54
now Operation Apprehension is
2:06:56
launched and will run for up to
2:06:58
two weeks. The way this operation
2:07:00
worked was that any vehicle seen picking up a
2:07:02
sex worker would be followed and stopped away from
2:07:04
University Ave. If the driver did
2:07:07
not resemble the composite sketch, he would be released. This
2:07:10
operation thankfully will be successful. Between
2:07:13
8 and 10 p.m. January 9, 1992, Bill Suff goes
2:07:15
to a dance
2:07:17
club in downtown Riverside to visit his brother. Another
2:07:19
one of his brothers also there. The three speak
2:07:21
for about 45 minutes. He
2:07:23
tells them another body had been found near his house,
2:07:25
complains about sex workers, says he had to go to
2:07:28
the hospital in Riverside to pick up some allergy meds,
2:07:30
but he actually goes to University Ave looking for a
2:07:32
new victim. He speaks to a
2:07:34
woman named Roberta first, but she tells him, nah, she's
2:07:36
going home, and he moves
2:07:39
on to approach another woman. Around
2:07:41
945, motorcycle cop Frank Orta is driving
2:07:43
towards University Ave after doing some patrols.
2:07:46
At the intersection of Victoria Avenue, he sees
2:07:48
a young woman walk up
2:07:50
to a gray van with a white male driver. He'd
2:07:52
seen the flyer, she's immediately suspicious. Orta
2:07:55
circles the block to see if the driver picked up the girl, but
2:07:58
she noticed him when he drove past and walked away
2:08:00
from the vault. Orda now goes further
2:08:02
down the road, does a U-turn so he'll be
2:08:04
in the right lane to follow the van when the driver perhaps
2:08:06
tries to pick up somebody else. The driver,
2:08:08
who saw the cop behind him, turns
2:08:10
right at a red light without coming to a full stop, which
2:08:12
now gives Orda a reason to pull him over. He
2:08:15
notices the driver has brown hair, heavy
2:08:17
set, has stubble, wearing metal frame
2:08:19
glasses, just like the description. Name
2:08:22
on his license, William Lester Suff. His
2:08:25
photo resembled a composite drawing, his
2:08:27
original address listed in Lake Elsinore, but it
2:08:29
was crossed off. There were two more addresses
2:08:31
on the back, one in Rialto, also crossed
2:08:34
off, current one in Colton. Orda
2:08:36
also noticed a California Highway Patrol cap on
2:08:38
his center console. William Suff told
2:08:41
Orda he didn't have his registration with him.
2:08:43
When Orda runs his plate, he learns
2:08:45
that Suff's license was suspended, and his registration
2:08:47
tags belong to a different vehicle. So this
2:08:49
fucker looking more and more suspicious by the
2:08:51
second. Now he
2:08:54
can impound the vehicle, which
2:08:56
will give the police time to search it for evidence. Orda
2:08:59
radios about his stop. Soon two
2:09:01
corpals from Operation Apprehension arrive, Don
2:09:03
Towley and Dwayne Beckman. William
2:09:06
Suff agreed to have photos of himself and his van
2:09:08
taken, but he complained he was cold asking the jacket.
2:09:11
Orda offered to get it for him. Corporal Towley
2:09:13
starts searching the driver's side of the van, which
2:09:15
was out of view of Suff and Corporal Beckman.
2:09:17
Inside the van he finds pieces of natural fiber
2:09:19
rope, thick black schedule book, and
2:09:22
a kitchen knife tucked inside a metal track
2:09:24
of the driver's seat. Positioned in
2:09:26
such a way that one could easily grab
2:09:28
the handle. Towley sees blood on
2:09:30
the blade. Under the seat he finds a .357 revolver.
2:09:34
Towley holds up the weapon where Orda could see
2:09:36
it. Now orders Beckman to handcuff Bill. Orda
2:09:39
thought that Bill might have asked for his coat as
2:09:41
a cover to grab the revolver. Towley,
2:09:43
who is still out of Suff's view at this point, now
2:09:45
comes towards him and asks, you know what
2:09:47
this is about, don't you? Bill nodded, and
2:09:49
then his knees buckle and he drops to the ground.
2:09:53
When Towley holds up the revolver, Bill seems
2:09:55
relieved, tells officers it's actually just a
2:09:57
pellet gun. And it was a
2:09:59
pellet gun, but his reaction was highly suspicious. Bill acted very
2:10:01
defeated like a guy who knew he'd just been caught for
2:10:03
something serious. Beckman
2:10:05
and Talley continued searching and found a parole
2:10:07
ID card. Bill said he was on parole
2:10:10
in Texas for 10 years for assault. Or
2:10:13
he had been in, yeah, on parole
2:10:15
in Texas for 10 years for an assault. Said he
2:10:17
injured someone who was having sex with his wife. Finally,
2:10:21
a lie that now might actually catch up with his fucker. On
2:10:24
one wall in the ceiling of the van
2:10:26
is a dry red stain. Looks like blood.
2:10:28
This idiot never even bothered to clean out his murder van. A
2:10:31
request was now sent out for a police unit with a better camera
2:10:33
to respond to the scene. And Detective Christine Keers
2:10:35
from the task force has called in. Christine,
2:10:38
when she gets there, notices that Bill's 1989 Mitsubishi
2:10:40
van looks a lot like a Chevy Astro. She
2:10:43
checked out the interior, saw that red stain. She
2:10:45
actually thought it might be a sauce, maybe chili.
2:10:48
Still, she knew this was the serial killer's vehicle. The
2:10:51
van also had different tire brands. Same brands
2:10:53
found at the Cazares and McDonald crime scenes.
2:10:56
Christine found even more evidence inside the van. She
2:10:58
knew that gray, red, white, blue, gold, green,
2:11:01
and natural rope fibers found on some of
2:11:03
the victims. The van had
2:11:05
gray carpet and upholstery. There was a blue
2:11:07
and red sleeping bag with white stuffing poking
2:11:09
out, a gold pillow, a colorful Afghan, a
2:11:12
green blanket, and a rope in the van.
2:11:14
It's all pointing towards him being the murder. She also saw
2:11:16
the schedule book, which looked like a Bible. Everything
2:11:19
lining up with the crime scene evidence
2:11:21
and Kelly Whitecloud's statement about the suspect.
2:11:24
Detective Keers tells Bill that she needs to ask him some questions
2:11:27
down at the police station. Bill
2:11:29
was taken to RPD headquarters where he agrees
2:11:31
to do an interview. She
2:11:33
calls in criminalist Steve, Steve
2:11:35
Sakosky. Oh, Polish name, still
2:11:37
get me. Asked
2:11:39
him to go to the impound warehouse. He determined that
2:11:41
the van belonged to the Riverside serial killer. Christine
2:11:44
started off Bill's interview by asking him about his background.
2:11:47
He said his name was Bill Lee Suff. So
2:11:49
even lies about his middle name. His
2:11:52
first name was just, you know, just Bill. His
2:11:54
family called him William, but it's just Bill. Okay,
2:11:56
cool. We'll file that under who gives a shit.
2:11:58
He claimed that sex workers had a... approached him
2:12:00
without his permission and that he
2:12:02
had never paid them. He had no reason to
2:12:04
because he had a wife, gosh dang. He
2:12:07
agreed to share samples of the saliva, blood and hair, which
2:12:09
is weird. What's he thinking there? Bill
2:12:11
said he had been a medical corpsman in the Air Force, had
2:12:13
worked in the pediatric ward of a hospital, that
2:12:15
he'd earned a BA in sociology and social work, left
2:12:18
out the part about earning that degree in prison. He
2:12:20
said he'd only spent a week and a half in prison for beating up a
2:12:23
man who he caught having an affair
2:12:25
with his first wife. He
2:12:27
discussed his relationship with Bonnie, how he was a member
2:12:29
of the First Southern Baptist Church in Lake Ellsworth, so
2:12:31
he couldn't have done it. It's
2:12:33
impossible for someone who's a member of that church to commit these
2:12:35
crimes. Kiera Zincen-Pierre wrote about
2:12:37
the interview. As Chris listened, she
2:12:40
realized he was steadily building a portrait of
2:12:42
himself as a kind, caring, religious person who
2:12:44
loved children, medicine and his fellow man. At
2:12:47
one point in the interview, Christine asked Bill, did
2:12:49
you think you were doing a service to the community
2:12:52
by cleaning up these sluts out there in the boulevard? And
2:12:55
Bill quickly answered, murder is wrong. Oh,
2:12:57
he's such a good boy. When
2:12:59
asked about the knife, Bill said he used it to slice some
2:13:01
fat off of some ham and some other
2:13:05
stuff he had bought from the store. And he claimed
2:13:07
he cut his finger a couple months ago. That's probably the source of
2:13:10
the blood. He agreed to let
2:13:12
the police search his apartment, but asked that Cheryl be present.
2:13:15
Cheryl asked two of Bill's brothers to come over and help. All
2:13:17
three of them would help the police search the house for evidence
2:13:19
against Bill. Does he
2:13:21
actually still think he might get away with everything? I
2:13:24
mean, he's been given Cheryl's clothes, Cheryl
2:13:26
clothes that have been taken from victims. Christine
2:13:29
has Cheryl, his twin flame, now
2:13:31
brought to the station and she talks about all these
2:13:34
gifts she's been receiving from Bill. Bill
2:13:36
said he got them from yard sales and swap meets. Bill's
2:13:40
real criminal record is now faxed to the station,
2:13:42
which proves he had lied during the
2:13:44
interview. Bill admits to lying
2:13:46
and Christine confronts him. She now
2:13:48
tells Bill they knew he was at the
2:13:51
Orange Grove where Eleanor Casares' remains were found
2:13:53
because his tire tracks were found there. Bill
2:13:56
admits he was there, but he was just picking some oranges, you
2:13:58
know, just stealing a couple oranges. Dean
2:14:00
told him that there was something else in the groves, asked him
2:14:02
what it was, and Bill was like, yeah, there
2:14:04
was a dead body there. Okay, yeah, I did
2:14:06
see a dead body. He claims that
2:14:08
he saw the body, walked around it, had
2:14:11
no idea who put the woman there. Bill
2:14:14
suggested that he wanted a lawyer now, saying,
2:14:16
I better get a lawyer, because you think I
2:14:18
did it and I didn't. But
2:14:20
then they keep talking, and he adds that he
2:14:22
wants to clear some things up. He says, I want
2:14:24
to make sure you end up knowing I didn't kill her. I
2:14:27
took the clothes, because they were lying nearby her,
2:14:29
and that's it. Who the fuck does
2:14:31
that? Who the fuck doubles upon a freshly dead body, and
2:14:33
there's some clothes next to him, and thinks, oh man, what
2:14:35
a great opportunity to get my wife some new clothes. I
2:14:38
mean, I won't say anything about the body. Just leave the
2:14:40
body there, and you know, that couldn't possibly get me in
2:14:42
trouble to take her clothes. Bill
2:14:45
was asked about the bloody knife, again, the one found
2:14:47
in his van, and now he says, okay, yeah, I
2:14:49
did find it on the ground by the body. When
2:14:52
pressed further, he admitted, okay, yeah, the knife was sticking
2:14:54
out of her chest, in the middle of her chest.
2:14:57
And Christina asked him, well, what did you do with it? And he says, I
2:14:59
pulled it out. You know, again, as
2:15:02
one does, if you see a knife
2:15:04
sticking out of a murdered person's body, you don't
2:15:06
call the police. No one does that. Everyone
2:15:09
just thinks, oh cool, free knife. And
2:15:11
they just toss it in their van, and don't wash it. Detective
2:15:15
Davis now jumps in, tells Bill, Bill, you're fucking idiot.
2:15:17
Come on, buddy, come on, better stories. No.
2:15:20
He says, Bill, the police have found your tire
2:15:22
tracks, and footprints, and other crime scenes. And Bill's
2:15:24
like, I don't know how, I don't know anything about those murders.
2:15:27
And now he abruptly ends the interview and
2:15:29
insists, I will need that lawyer. Five
2:15:32
days later, January 14th, 1992,
2:15:34
Steve Sakovsky,
2:15:37
fucking skis, informs Detective
2:15:40
Kears that trace evidence from
2:15:42
Bill's body in the van has matched
2:15:44
to McDonald and Casara's crime scenes. Same
2:15:47
day, Bill is charged with both those murders. Before
2:15:50
that, he was being held without bond for his Texas
2:15:52
parole violation. So it's nice that that came in handy.
2:15:55
After Bill was arrested and charged with murder, his
2:15:58
mother, Elizabeth, I love this, was so angry. She
2:16:01
started speaking to the prosecutors instead of his attorney
2:16:04
and made the comment that the state, quote, should hang him.
2:16:06
Kind of love it
2:16:08
right now. She knew that fucker
2:16:10
beat her grandbaby to death, and now he's done this. She
2:16:12
does not doubt his guilt
2:16:14
for a second. She also writes her
2:16:16
son Bill a letter saying that she doesn't blame
2:16:18
herself for how he turned out. She
2:16:21
did the best she could, raising him, and taught all her
2:16:23
kids good morals. I
2:16:25
like that sentiment. I mean, I mean, did she
2:16:27
raise him really well? Cures and St. Pierre noted
2:16:30
that one suff brother had a history of drug-related
2:16:32
crimes. Another had a record for robbery, and the
2:16:34
third had been arrested repeatedly for sexual assault, including
2:16:36
sexual assault of a minor. I mean,
2:16:39
she wasn't deadbeat. She wasn't a deadbeat. She wasn't
2:16:41
Pat Sajak, but maybe not the best mom
2:16:43
either, or maybe just got real unlucky with
2:16:45
her brute. The task force now
2:16:47
had a list of 19 murder cases from
2:16:49
1986 to 1991 they thought Bill was involved
2:16:51
in, but there wasn't enough evidence in six
2:16:54
of those cases to assure a conviction. The
2:16:56
DA's office said that some of the evidence in the
2:16:58
six cases was lost due to preservation problems in the
2:17:00
passage of time. A few experts
2:17:03
also concluded that at least two of the six
2:17:05
murders probably not committed by Bill. Bill's
2:17:08
arraignment for the first two murder charges took
2:17:10
place February 28, 1992. He pled not guilty. On
2:17:15
July 28, 1992, the DA's office announces that 12
2:17:18
more charges will be filed against Bill Suff. A
2:17:21
county grand jury hands down the indictment on July 24.
2:17:24
The grand jury viewed evidence of tire impressions,
2:17:26
shoe prints, bodily fluids, fibers, head and pubic
2:17:29
hairs that linked Bill to over a dozen
2:17:31
crime scenes. Bill also
2:17:33
charged with the attempted rape and murder
2:17:35
of Rhonda Jetmore, the one that got away. Despite
2:17:37
all the evidence against him, the California court system
2:17:40
was so backed up it will take three years
2:17:42
for Bill to go to trial. February
2:17:45
16, 1995,
2:17:47
a judge dismisses one count against Bill
2:17:49
for the oldest murder case, 1986 murder
2:17:52
of Charlotte Jean Palmer. Charlotte's
2:17:54
cause of death was undetermined. Hair is found
2:17:56
on her body, similar to Bill's, but testing
2:17:58
was not quite conclusive. Trial
2:18:01
finally started March of 1995. Local
2:18:03
news outlets did cover it, but overall, like
2:18:06
I mentioned, didn't receive much media attention. The
2:18:08
OJ Simpson murder trial, you know, happening in
2:18:10
LA at the same time, certainly not helping
2:18:12
this case get a lot of coverage. And
2:18:15
also just a general president's prejudice
2:18:17
against sex workers. Riverside
2:18:20
County DA Paul Zellerbach, prosecutes the case
2:18:22
according to Keers and St. Pierre. He
2:18:24
often said that if the victims had been housewives instead of
2:18:27
hookers, everyone would have been bending over
2:18:29
backward to help solve the case. The
2:18:32
defense tried to use the victim's line of
2:18:34
work to influence the jury. Bill's attorneys protested
2:18:36
when Zellerbach asked to present a poster board
2:18:38
of family photos of the victims rather than
2:18:40
using mug shots or similar photos. Zellerbach
2:18:43
prosecuted the case by himself. So
2:18:46
he agonized over the trial because his main goal was to
2:18:48
prove the murders were connected. In other words,
2:18:50
he had to prove Bill was a serial killer. He
2:18:52
was disorganized at the start, but
2:18:54
as the trial continued, he presented a strong case. He
2:18:57
presented a mountain of evidence from the
2:18:59
crime lab, fibers, head and pubic hairs,
2:19:01
tire tracks, shoe prints, DNA testing of
2:19:03
semen, leftover chili, maybe not that part.
2:19:06
Bloody knife found in the van also
2:19:09
had some of the victims property found in Bill's possession.
2:19:12
Opening statements delivered March 27th, 1995. The
2:19:15
LA Times reported that the prosecution's
2:19:17
opening was dispassionate and plotting ouch.
2:19:21
Zellerbach told the jury all the implements of Mr. Zellerbach's
2:19:24
trade were in the back of his van that night. The knife,
2:19:26
the rope, the sleeping bag. Bill
2:19:28
was represented by Randolph Driggs, former
2:19:31
Riverside County deputy DA and Frank
2:19:34
Peasley. The defense wanted to prove that
2:19:36
not all the murders were linked to Bill. They
2:19:38
wanted to portray him as an average common man
2:19:40
who was a victim of circumstance. OK.
2:19:44
Frank Peasley said in his opening statement that Bill did
2:19:46
not excuse me, that Bill did
2:19:48
employ prostitutes, but treated them with respect and
2:19:50
was good to them. Why
2:19:52
are you doing this, Frank? Do you hate women, too?
2:19:56
One big blow to the prosecution was at the
2:19:58
critical portion of Bill's interview when he admitted to
2:20:00
pulling the knife. knife from Eleanor Cesarres's chest and
2:20:02
taking it and her clothing with him
2:20:04
could not be admitted in court because it occurred
2:20:06
after he first asked for a lawyer. The
2:20:10
prosecution presented the murders in chronological order. Most of the
2:20:12
trial details will not be discussed because we've already covered
2:20:14
the evidence, linking Bill to the different
2:20:16
crime scenes. Cares and St.
2:20:18
Pierre wrote about the trial. The trial
2:20:20
itself was often tedious, laborious, and very
2:20:22
technical. It seemed a torture
2:20:24
for many to sit through, especially during the
2:20:26
scientific evidence and DNA discussions, which seemed too
2:20:28
many to be endlessly
2:20:31
repetitious. Both sides expressed
2:20:33
concern that jurors might be getting lost or
2:20:35
bored to inattention by the subject matter. Following
2:20:38
our highlights of some of the most important testimony, Zellerbach
2:20:41
told the jury that shoe prints from Cheryl Coker's
2:20:43
crime scene had the same tread pattern as a
2:20:45
pair of pro wings owned by Bill. Seaman
2:20:48
found in the condom at the crime scene matched the
2:20:51
DNA. The defense argued that the cat hair found
2:20:53
on Cherie Passour's body was consistent with Bill's
2:20:56
cat, but that animal hairs, not
2:20:58
as unique as human hairs, and one cannot reasonably
2:21:00
conclude that the hair came from Bill's cat. Because
2:21:03
another man, Seaman, was found in her body, the
2:21:05
prosecutors couldn't make a definitive conclusion that Bill was
2:21:07
the killer also. Riverside
2:21:09
Detective Mike Hearn testified that he
2:21:11
found two oversized GE Meiser 95-watt
2:21:13
light bulbs in Bill's apartment, which
2:21:16
matched exactly the light bulb found inside
2:21:18
Tina Leal's vagina. Neighbors
2:21:21
and associates testified about how Bill hated sex workers.
2:21:24
Dr. Harold Dedmon identified the blood on the knife
2:21:26
found in the van as belonging to Elinor Cesariz
2:21:28
and the semen in
2:21:30
some of the victim's bodies as belonging to Bill
2:21:32
Saff. Defense argued that if
2:21:35
Bill was responsible for any of the
2:21:37
murders, it was likely unplanned acts of
2:21:39
violence that occurred because the victims tried
2:21:41
to rob or cheat him. Get
2:21:43
the fuck out of here. Zellerbach responded to that
2:21:45
by saying, it is amazing how inconsistent the defense
2:21:47
can be. Mr. Peasley says Mr.
2:21:50
Saff did not commit any of these crimes, none,
2:21:52
but if you think he did, it's just a spur
2:21:54
of the moment ripoff second degree murder 13 times.
2:21:57
There's no way in God's green earth that you
2:22:00
can have a spur of the moment ripoff killing 13
2:22:03
times over three years. Exactly.
2:22:06
March 28th, Rhonda Jettmore testifies as the first
2:22:09
witness of the trial. Zellerbach
2:22:11
asked Jettmore if she saw the attacker in
2:22:13
the courtroom. She identified Suf, said, that's the
2:22:15
man who attacked me. Rhonda
2:22:17
testified that her attacker said his name was Bob,
2:22:19
but was wearing a belt buckle that said Bill.
2:22:22
She described the attack in court saying that she noticed Bill
2:22:24
only paid her $1 before
2:22:27
they were supposed to have sex. She said
2:22:29
before I could say anything to him, he grabbed me around
2:22:31
the neck and pushed me back on the bed while he
2:22:33
was choking me. I had the opportunity to look at him,
2:22:35
to look at the expression on the man's face. I was
2:22:37
struggling, but I couldn't move. He was strong, I was scared.
2:22:40
She fought him off by hitting him in the head with a
2:22:42
flashlight, fucking awesome. Ran and screamed for
2:22:44
help, but Bill chased, grabbed her by the ankle before
2:22:46
she got to the door. He
2:22:48
tried to take her clothes off. Bill's glasses fell off
2:22:50
during the struggle, and now he agreed to let her
2:22:53
go if she would help him find his glasses. What
2:22:56
the fuck? One second he's trying to literally kill
2:22:58
her and rape her. And the
2:23:00
next she's like, hey, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, wait, hold
2:23:02
up, hold up, hold up, hold up. Can you help
2:23:05
me find my glasses? It's super hard for me
2:23:07
to see right now. There's no way I'm gonna be able to strangle
2:23:09
you if I can't see you clearly. As
2:23:12
they were, she starts helping him look
2:23:14
for his glasses. What
2:23:16
is happening? As they're looking for his glasses, she
2:23:19
calls him Bill, he responds, and then
2:23:21
she escapes when he goes to grab the glasses that she
2:23:23
spotted. My God,
2:23:25
Bill's ex-girlfriend Bonnie Ashley testifies April 24th,
2:23:27
1995. He testified
2:23:29
that Bill occasionally drove for a white Toyota station
2:23:31
wagon. Earlier, Ron DeJetmore testified
2:23:33
that the attacker was driving a similar vehicle.
2:23:36
Bonnie testified about her relationship with Bill, said
2:23:39
she normally went to bed between eight and ten. She
2:23:41
would not have known if Bill was taking her vehicle out at night
2:23:43
after that. Bill initially told her that
2:23:45
he worked at a Texas prison, but
2:23:47
his parole officer later forced him to tell the truth.
2:23:50
He convinced Bonnie he was innocent of murder and his
2:23:52
daughter said that his wife or one of the neighbors
2:23:54
must have done it. Bonnie
2:23:56
testified that the police almost mocked me when she told
2:23:58
them that Bill was not violent with her. Bonnie
2:24:00
testified, the person I knew was extremely kind to help
2:24:03
with my elderly grandmother. When nobody
2:24:05
else was there, he was there. He was
2:24:07
helpful in the church. He was helpful to me. He
2:24:09
took care of me when I was sick. He wasn't mean. I mean,
2:24:11
he loved little animals. And
2:24:13
I thought he loved children. He never hit me. He
2:24:15
never swore at me. Whenever he would get mad, I couldn't find
2:24:17
my watch. I'd walk around. Where's my watch? And
2:24:20
my watch would end up in a shoe
2:24:22
or something like that. Okay,
2:24:25
he kind of lost me with the watch stuff, Bonnie. Maybe
2:24:28
Bonnie was between 90 and 100 years old. Seemed
2:24:30
to kind of go off the rails a little bit at the end there.
2:24:34
Bonnie confirmed that she and Bill went on a
2:24:36
trip to King's Canyon once, right? In important detail
2:24:38
because the defense argued that the King's Canyon shirt
2:24:40
found on Tina Leal, not Bill's, but she was
2:24:42
like, no. No, he did buy that shirt.
2:24:45
Bill's wife, Cheryl Lewis, his twin flame, testifies
2:24:48
May 3rd, 1995, speaking about the times he
2:24:50
claimed he was teaching earthquake preparedness classes at
2:24:52
night. Also
2:24:54
spoke to his abusive nature and his loathing
2:24:56
of sex workers. Closing
2:24:58
arguments started July 10th. July
2:25:01
11th, Randy Driggs said outside court that he expected
2:25:04
Bill to be convicted of, you know, five or
2:25:06
six murders, adding, that's my realistic belief. That
2:25:09
feeling has been more solidified during the trial. The
2:25:11
case went to the jury, July 12th, 1995. July
2:25:16
19th, the jury finds Bill guilty of
2:25:18
12 counts of first-degree murder. The
2:25:21
jury was deadlocked for almost a week regarding
2:25:23
the 13th murder, that of Cherie Passour. One
2:25:26
juror refused to change her decision, and a mistrial was declared in that
2:25:28
case. Bill also found guilty
2:25:30
of the attempt to murder of Ron Jettmore. Bill cried after the
2:25:33
verdict was read. Oh, poor baby. Afterwards,
2:25:37
Driggs read a shitty statement from Bill to the
2:25:39
families, said, Bill wanted me to express some sentiments
2:25:41
to the news media, especially to Mr. Little.
2:25:45
He was very, very sorry for the deaths
2:25:47
of anybody, but he wasn't responsible for them
2:25:49
totally. He never beat his
2:25:51
daughter to death, never killed any of these women. DA
2:25:55
Paul Zellerbach said after the verdict, I'd be upset too if
2:25:57
I was on my way to the gas chamber. All
2:26:00
hand him a tissue when he's walking into the gas chamber.
2:26:03
Hell never mind. Fuck it. Love it, Paul. You
2:26:05
know I should have drinks. Penalty phase started July 24,
2:26:07
1995. For the first
2:26:10
time, the jury now heard about the murders of
2:26:12
his infant daughter, Dejanay Suff, and Lisa Lasek. The
2:26:14
defense tried to imply the bill's first wife, Terrell, may have been
2:26:16
the killer, and then they were reprimanded for
2:26:18
the judge, or by the judge, for saying that shit.
2:26:22
Zellerbach also testified about the abuse of Bill's
2:26:24
other daughter, right? Bridget Suff. She'll
2:26:26
return to give testimony about that abuse. The
2:26:29
victim's family spoke in court, gave impact
2:26:31
statements that humanized the victims, showed how
2:26:33
they were beloved family members. Then
2:26:36
Randolph-Riggs said in the defense's opening statement of
2:26:38
the guilt phase, I want to
2:26:41
talk about Bill Suff as a human being, the
2:26:43
side you haven't seen before. And
2:26:45
the defense presented some character witnesses, including Bill's mother.
2:26:47
They didn't have very many witnesses. She
2:26:50
was the only family member who would testify, and
2:26:52
she was not the best character witness as she still hated him.
2:26:56
Elizabeth Mead would testify August 8, 1995.
2:26:59
Again, only family member who testified. Talked
2:27:01
about how her husband left the family, never sent any money,
2:27:04
so Bill got a job to help out. That part was
2:27:06
nice. But then said that when
2:27:08
she read about how Bridget was abused, made her doubt
2:27:10
that her son was innocent in Dejanay's case, as he
2:27:13
claimed. Bonnie next testified about how
2:27:15
Bill was kind and caring, but he also
2:27:17
stole 900 bucks from
2:27:19
her grandma's caretaking account. He
2:27:22
said he took the money to pay himself for the
2:27:24
work he did for her without asking. She negotiated a
2:27:26
lesser payment, then asked Bill to get the fuck out.
2:27:29
And then when he left, he took all the jewelry he'd
2:27:31
ever given her with him. So,
2:27:33
you know, not the most glowing character
2:27:35
reference. That was a defense witness. Randy
2:27:38
Driggs asked the jury to consider life without parole
2:27:40
rather than the death penalty, and said that Bill
2:27:42
would be a marked man in prison because he
2:27:44
was a child killer. Mr. Suff
2:27:46
will be living on the edge of the seat for the rest of his life. He'll
2:27:48
be worrying about his next step, his next move. Who's
2:27:50
behind him? August 17, 1995, the
2:27:53
jury votes for the death penalty. It
2:27:57
took them a whole 10 minutes. to
2:28:00
reach that decision. I love it. Some
2:28:02
jurors later said they were hesitant to sentence Bill
2:28:05
to death during the, this
2:28:07
penalty phase until they saw a
2:28:09
photo of dead, child
2:28:12
Dejanae Suff. Then it was full
2:28:14
on, can he maybe be taken out to the desert
2:28:16
to have his eyes carved out with a spoon and ants put in
2:28:18
his head and now the other shit dance head? October
2:28:21
26, 1995, judge, a judge officially sentences
2:28:24
Bill Suff to death. At
2:28:27
the sentencing hearing, Bill, poor, good boy, can't catch
2:28:29
a break, Bill, quote,
2:28:31
delivered a long rambling lament about
2:28:35
his innocence and unfortunate situation.
2:28:38
Bill said about himself during this fucking rant,
2:28:40
quote, I'm a caring, loving and helpful person.
2:28:42
Ask anyone close to me. I
2:28:44
gave people I barely knew money and food. Ask the kind of
2:28:46
person I am. The prostitute killings
2:28:48
went on before I came to California and
2:28:50
they continued after my arrest. The
2:28:53
responsible parties are still out there killing. He
2:28:55
said that the evidence against him was planted to
2:28:57
find someone, anyone, killed you the murders. Oh,
2:29:00
Billy boy. Also said he
2:29:03
was a hopeless romantic and
2:29:05
lamented that women would no longer want to be
2:29:07
with him. I
2:29:09
hope he's receiving some romance in prison right now,
2:29:11
like some very fucking rough, violent romance. He
2:29:14
specifically brought up the murder of Kimberly Little arguing that he gave
2:29:16
her food and money and invited her to live with him. He
2:29:19
said, I couldn't have killed Kim. I care for her too much. No
2:29:22
one seemed to give a fuck about what he would say, not even mama. Two
2:29:26
years after being sentenced to die in 1997, Bill
2:29:28
Suff will work with author, Brian Allen Lane,
2:29:30
for his book, Cat and Mouse, Mind Games
2:29:32
with a Serial Killer. This
2:29:35
book contains not only crime scene photos and details, fucking terribly
2:29:37
disturbing photos. I didn't even realize they were in there. I
2:29:39
was looking for some other stuff. I was like, son of
2:29:41
a bitch. I can't even see that. Also
2:29:45
contains some original short stories and
2:29:47
a poem written by our sweet, sweet Bill. And
2:29:50
yes, I would like to share some of his work with you. This
2:29:53
is his poem. It's
2:29:56
so bad. Called, That
2:29:58
Forever Tier. And
2:30:00
I'd like to read over some ragtime music to
2:30:02
make sure that no one likes it. And
2:30:05
loving you with my heart. I'm
2:30:09
holding you so close to me and
2:30:11
marvel at the sight I see. You're
2:30:14
beautiful beyond compare. I
2:30:17
reach for you, but you're not there. It's
2:30:20
just a dream I realized. And
2:30:23
once again, tears fill my eyes.
2:30:27
I have this dream most every night. I
2:30:29
reach for you and hold you tight. But
2:30:32
come to dawn, you'll disappear. And
2:30:35
again, I shed that forever tear.
2:30:40
Wow, what a great literary work for
2:30:42
a guy in his mid 40s. So complex and
2:30:44
nuanced. It definitely doesn't sound
2:30:46
like a 12 year old wrote that shit
2:30:48
in fucking 10 minutes for an
2:30:50
in-class assignment that they didn't really care about. I'll
2:30:54
spare you the short stories. They're very long
2:30:56
and fucking suck. April
2:30:58
28th, 2014, the California Supreme Court upholds the
2:31:00
death penalty for Bill Suff. But
2:31:03
then March 13th, 2019, California Governor Gavin
2:31:05
Newsom signs an executive order placing
2:31:07
a moratorium on the death penalty in the
2:31:09
state of California. Not a fan
2:31:12
of that decision. I do get
2:31:14
protecting people who are innocent on death row. Could
2:31:16
be innocent, possibly, small
2:31:18
chance. But in cases like this,
2:31:20
get the fuck out of here. No
2:31:22
one in the US history has ever
2:31:24
been falsely convicted of a dozen different
2:31:27
murders, from what I can tell. Come
2:31:29
on. Last thing, as of
2:31:32
today, Bill Suff, 73 years old, inmate
2:31:34
number J83402, he's in
2:31:36
San Quentin. Sources
2:31:38
don't say that he and Cheryl ever got
2:31:40
divorced during the last 30 years. But it's
2:31:43
not a mention of them still being married. I'm gonna assume that
2:31:45
they're divorced. I'm gonna assume that his
2:31:47
twin flame filed divorce paperwork once
2:31:49
he was sent to death row. Yeah,
2:31:52
still incarcerated on death row at
2:31:55
San Quentin despite the moratorium. Where
2:31:57
sadly, I guess he comes across as a real gentle soul in
2:31:59
cable. of her to fly and is
2:32:01
well liked by many of the guards and
2:32:04
other prisoners. Good
2:32:07
job soldier you made it
2:32:10
back there. Bill
2:32:18
stuff the Riverside Killer, what a monster suspected
2:32:20
of at least 19 murders between 1986 and 1991
2:32:25
convicted of 12 of those murders almost convicted
2:32:27
of 13 sentenced to death he
2:32:30
did kill at least 13 people he
2:32:32
was convicted of beating his two-month-old daughter to
2:32:34
death before these final convictions little Dijonay Jean
2:32:36
Suff nearly beat two other
2:32:38
children to death as well when
2:32:41
he wasn't beating the shit out of his babies or any
2:32:43
woman he was in a relationship with Suff targeted sex workers almost
2:32:46
all of them in Riverside County, California. He
2:32:48
was a cowardly predator who preyed
2:32:50
on vulnerable people two teenage brides
2:32:53
three babies women struggling
2:32:55
with drug addiction and or homelessness many of
2:32:57
them very physically small women. I would
2:33:00
fucking love to see him get a taste of his own
2:33:02
medicine right get left in his cell with someone so much
2:33:04
bigger and stronger than him someone who hates
2:33:06
him as much as he hates his victims like
2:33:09
many most I think of these dirtbags he
2:33:11
just will not admit what he's done and who he
2:33:14
really is to this day probably gets
2:33:16
off and feeling like he's tricking all the stupid people around
2:33:18
him who fall for his gentle nice guy act. I
2:33:21
hope that at least he can't trick himself. I hope
2:33:23
deep down in his private moments of which he has so many now he
2:33:25
does really truly know who he is and
2:33:28
I hope he fucking hates himself for who
2:33:30
he is. At the very least I hope I
2:33:32
hope he hates knowing that he will die in prison. He'll
2:33:35
die not having known freedom since January of 1992 over 30
2:33:37
years ago. Also hope he checks
2:33:40
out this episode. I mean he's probably allowed to listen to the podcast.
2:33:42
I hope it makes his blood boil. You
2:33:45
sad little clown Billy those kids
2:33:47

2:33:49

2:40:50
now let's check out this week's Time
2:40:52
Sucker updates. It's
2:40:58
your Time Sucker updates. Today's
2:41:01
first update comes in from a
2:41:03
sweet sack named Floyd, writing in
2:41:06
with a subject line of Vata's Big Deal about
2:41:08
IBLP. Greetings
2:41:11
and salutations, Master Time Sucker, prophet of
2:41:13
Nimrod, and favorite chew toy Bojangles. I
2:41:15
guess you could be Lucifina's favorite chew
2:41:17
toy as well. I don't know. I'm writing
2:41:20
for you for two reasons. One, because
2:41:22
you finally covered IBLP in the Duggar Dark
2:41:24
Secrets episode of Time Suck. I
2:41:26
wanted to write in and suggest covering Bill Gotthard,
2:41:29
as we called him back in the day, but I'm
2:41:31
still cashing up to current date episodes after starting
2:41:33
the episode 1 last year. I'm
2:41:35
currently at 145, but
2:41:37
I had to skip ahead to listen to the one
2:41:40
about IBLP, mainly because my family
2:41:42
was deeply involved in it during the 90s to early 2000s. I
2:41:45
personally met with old Billy Boy multiple
2:41:47
times, attended the first years of their
2:41:50
fake college, and
2:41:52
even unwittingly smuggled 20,000 of cash into Russia for them.
2:41:55
Yay, cult shenanigans! You
2:41:58
definitely only scratched the surface of a very deep, subject,
2:42:01
not to mention the paramilitary group called Alert
2:42:03
that still runs out of their headquarters in
2:42:05
Big Sandy, Texas, ironically on the
2:42:07
campus of a different cult that went defunct a while
2:42:09
back. Thankfully, my siblings and
2:42:11
I are completely out and enjoying life like
2:42:13
normal people. Any chance I
2:42:15
get, I will decry the madness of
2:42:18
religious extremism and dangers of high control
2:42:20
groups like IBLP. If
2:42:22
you haven't seen the docuseries, Shiny Happy People,
2:42:24
yet I highly recommend it, I might have
2:42:26
been in it. As
2:42:28
kids, we would never have been allowed to listen to
2:42:30
anything as worldly as your comedy or podcast. What I'm
2:42:32
proud to say is that I'm hooked after my brother
2:42:34
harassed me into listening. He's a badass
2:42:37
vet, awesome brother-in-law. If you can give a shout
2:42:39
out to Ryan, Motherflipp, and Yancey, I'm sure you'd
2:42:41
make a damn day. But none
2:42:43
of that is why I'm writing today. I'm currently on
2:42:45
episode 145 and for nearly a
2:42:47
goddamn hour, every time you reference a
2:42:49
venomous snake, you call it poisonous and I'm losing my
2:42:51
mind. Obviously, if you
2:42:53
didn't read it, obviously you didn't read
2:42:56
any wisdom booklets, IBLP,
2:42:58
shitty homeschool materials, or
2:43:00
you would know the difference. There were plenty
2:43:02
of examples given of God smiting some unworthy
2:43:04
sinner with venomous snakes and that shit sticks
2:43:06
with you. An easy
2:43:09
way to remember it is if you bite something
2:43:11
and you die, then it is poisonous. If
2:43:13
it bites you and you die, then it is
2:43:15
venomous. Being a
2:43:17
mush mouth does not adequately explain this simple gaffe
2:43:19
as my sister would say, do better. Thanks
2:43:23
for what you do. The coach that curious is grateful.
2:43:25
Please keep on sucking, Floyd. Floyd,
2:43:27
I love this message. Big thanks
2:43:29
to Ryan, Motherflipp, and Yancey for dragging
2:43:31
you into this weird little world. Yeah, I
2:43:34
did eventually learn as you're probably hearing already on
2:43:36
some old updates, the difference
2:43:38
between venomous and poisonous. But
2:43:40
I didn't get that awesome example. If you
2:43:42
bite it, it's poisonous. If it bites you, it's
2:43:45
venomous. Venomous. Yeah,
2:43:48
that's awesome. And I did
2:43:50
watch that doc, Shiny, heavy people. So I
2:43:52
did probably see you. And yeah, we
2:43:54
barely scratched the surface of the IBLP. The
2:43:57
paramilitary group they have is fucking bonkers.
2:43:59
Truly. thinking they can with God's help,
2:44:01
of course, actually take over the world. Scary.
2:44:05
Luckily, they are currently a bit outmatched by our
2:44:07
military. Let's hope it stays that way. Hope
2:44:10
you enjoy the rest of this ride. You got some
2:44:12
wild episodes and a little bit of drama
2:44:14
ahead of you before it fully caught up. Next
2:44:17
up, probably small-headed and tiny-wristed
2:44:20
sack Tony P. Writes in
2:44:22
with no subject line. Says,
2:44:24
hey, Dan, I've been a big fan of yours for many
2:44:26
years. I absolutely love TimeSuck. I've listened to almost every single
2:44:28
episode. I wanted to talk to you about the episode that
2:44:30
you most recently did about incels, because I
2:44:32
used to be an incel. The
2:44:35
only thing that really separated me from the entire
2:44:37
incel ideology was that I understood that you can
2:44:39
always change things about yourself and make yourself better.
2:44:43
And that's exactly what I did. I work
2:44:45
out every single day. I take Brazilian jiu-jitsu classes.
2:44:49
I read every book I can get my hands on.
2:44:51
I'm just doing things to improve myself as a human
2:44:53
being. And I'm happy to say that now I have
2:44:55
a girlfriend and we've been in a very serious relationship
2:44:57
for what's going on three years. And I couldn't be
2:44:59
happier. Hail Nimrod, hail Isafina, glory be to triple
2:45:01
M. I have a theory
2:45:03
about incels. You see, I myself
2:45:05
have Asperger syndrome, and so did Elliot Roger.
2:45:09
I don't have any data to back all this up, but
2:45:11
I'd be willing to bet you any amount of money that
2:45:13
if there was ever some kind of mass psychological study on
2:45:15
incels, we would find out that
2:45:17
the vast majority of them are on the autism spectrum.
2:45:21
I say this largely because people like myself with autism
2:45:23
struggle with really anything that involves anything that has to
2:45:25
do with interacting with other human beings. People
2:45:28
with autism have very little understanding about how relationships
2:45:30
work. I certainly was this way for many, many
2:45:32
years, which is why you
2:45:34
have this entire incel ideology trying to explain away the reasons
2:45:37
for you not getting late. Anyway,
2:45:39
Dan, I absolutely love all you do. Keep on sucking. I'm looking
2:45:41
forward to listening to time suck episodes for many more years to
2:45:43
come. Yeah, I hope so. Tony
2:45:46
P, did you just dick-mog me? I
2:45:49
think you might just verbally dick-mog me. Or maybe
2:45:51
you info-mogged me. You definitely didn't school-mog
2:45:53
me. Not with this Frankenstein head. Thank
2:45:56
you for writing in. Good for you. Live
2:45:58
in proof of how continually we... working on
2:46:00
yourself can, you know, almost
2:46:03
always lead to good things. I would
2:46:05
say always to some degree, uh, enjoy
2:46:07
your Lucifina, treat her so much better
2:46:10
than our Billy today, William stuff would, uh,
2:46:12
and regarding the autism spectrum, uh, yeah, I bet you're
2:46:14
right. You know, it would be cool
2:46:17
if high schools had classes, uh,
2:46:19
for people who do struggle socially on things
2:46:21
like how to respectfully and successfully date,
2:46:24
right? You know, uh, those classes would be
2:46:26
great for, you know, kids who don't have parents at home guiding
2:46:28
them in the, in that way. I think
2:46:30
it's kind of weird that we don't have that. I mean,
2:46:33
dating is such a big part of life for so many
2:46:35
people, most people, almost all people, and
2:46:37
you know, most of us, uh, get
2:46:39
no real education and the basics of how to do
2:46:41
that. I'm sure those classes would piss
2:46:43
off some parents, but I also think if done right, they
2:46:46
would lead to so many people being so much happier.
2:46:49
Uh, thank you again, Tony. Uh, don't break me with an arm
2:46:51
bar or some shit if we ever meet. I'm
2:46:54
a bigger guy. I look like I can probably take some
2:46:56
damage, but I'm very stiff and breakable. Uh,
2:46:59
our next update comes in from super
2:47:01
thoughtful sack Sophie are, uh,
2:47:03
writing him the subject line of thoughts
2:47:05
on insulin and isolation. A lot of
2:47:07
cool info coming your way now. Uh,
2:47:09
dear suck master just got done listening to your
2:47:12
in the cellosphere episode, I was so excited to
2:47:14
see you. We're covering this topic as studying the
2:47:16
manosphere in cells and adjacent online
2:47:18
communities was pretty much all I did the
2:47:20
last two semesters of my undergrad years as
2:47:22
a sociology student. I ended up
2:47:24
submitting a thesis research proposal on suicidal
2:47:26
ideation within in-cell communities, and it was
2:47:29
approved. Unfortunately, it was not
2:47:31
submitted for full research as I had to
2:47:33
transfer universities due to life circumstances changing still
2:47:35
have it saved on my hard drive since erasing over
2:47:37
20 pages of research is too much for my ego.
2:47:40
You and your team did an excellent job researching
2:47:42
the topic and covering the origins current state and
2:47:45
ongoing evolution of the in-cell community. I was also
2:47:47
really impressed of how much with how
2:47:49
much of the vernacular and pseudo science theories you
2:47:51
covered that in cells using site, I'll
2:47:54
never forget trying to dissect the dense
2:47:56
mind bending Lee of two scientific theories
2:47:58
that in cells would regularly. post on chat
2:48:00
rooms and message boards and trying
2:48:02
to figure out how I could possibly
2:48:05
explain terms like foreskin mogs and forehead
2:48:08
cell in my research without signing off
2:48:10
my rocker. I did want to
2:48:12
touch on one thing that I found in my own research that
2:48:14
I wanted to tack on to your conclusions for consideration. I
2:48:17
do apologize for the length of the email, but I feel there are too
2:48:19
many things I can't leave out. I
2:48:21
would undoubtedly classify incel ideology
2:48:23
and manosphere beliefs as extremist
2:48:25
and incredibly dangerous. While
2:48:28
it's easy to get lost in the ridiculous labels,
2:48:30
jargon, lack of reason present within the incel community,
2:48:33
the biggest thing I was alarmed by
2:48:35
was the readiness and propensity for violence
2:48:37
against themselves and others, primarily women, as
2:48:40
well as the act of encouragement to
2:48:42
isolate, insulate, and alienate themselves from quote
2:48:44
normies, and the pressure
2:48:46
present to allow themselves to be indoctrinated
2:48:48
by manosphere ideology. Therapists
2:48:50
were often compared to KGB
2:48:53
agents, seriously, and therapy
2:48:55
was referred to as psychological occupation. Most
2:48:58
incels I came across were very suicidal and
2:49:01
would actively encourage other incels to
2:49:03
harm themselves or take their own
2:49:05
lives, sometimes labeling these posts as
2:49:07
rope fuel. They
2:49:09
would often tell other incels to post their
2:49:11
suicide or self-harm online for proof of their
2:49:13
devotion to the cause, fuck, even
2:49:16
saying that this is how you achieve true martyrdom in
2:49:18
Elliot Rogers' status. I know that the
2:49:20
logic of this doesn't make any sense, but as you
2:49:22
discovered in your episode, not much of their logic does
2:49:24
make sense. It's all an
2:49:26
incredibly slippery slope towards actively planning and
2:49:29
seeking out physical revenge towards women and
2:49:31
others in society they think have inflicted
2:49:33
forced celibacy upon them. While
2:49:36
it's easy to say that the Earth would be better off
2:49:38
without these people and call it a day, I would argue
2:49:40
that the insulation and alienation of this group is what makes
2:49:42
it so dangerous to the general public, even
2:49:45
comparable to terrorist groups in some circumstances. As
2:49:48
you discussed, many voiced that they are willing to hurt themselves
2:49:50
and take others out with them to inflict as much damage
2:49:52
as possible. It's close
2:49:54
to impossible to tell if this language is ambiguous
2:49:56
for shock factor or if they are actually planning
2:49:58
attacks. I recall
2:50:01
one source I used in my own
2:50:03
research comparing incel tactics of isolation, indoctrination,
2:50:05
and suicide to ISIS in
2:50:07
its intensity and fervency. And
2:50:10
I can't say I disagree. The media only
2:50:12
tends to focus on incel violence after it has
2:50:14
happened, not so much on the build up and
2:50:16
how that incel got to the point of extremism
2:50:18
that they kill others and themselves. But
2:50:21
what are we to do when incels are actively encouraging
2:50:23
themselves and others to not seek outside help and
2:50:26
to not seek psychological intervention? Well,
2:50:28
I wouldn't say that full-on incel
2:50:30
dumb is super common, sympathy of,
2:50:32
and justification of incel beliefs absolutely
2:50:34
is, and that's where it all starts. Many
2:50:37
incels do not actively voice their beliefs outside
2:50:39
of online forums, as they know they will
2:50:42
be shunned and shut out by others. But
2:50:44
it's this isolation and echo chamber effect that
2:50:46
allows extreme ideologies to grow and fester unchecked
2:50:48
and unchallenged. I implore anyone and everyone who
2:50:50
might even think that their loved one or
2:50:52
friend is sympathetic to incel ideology or
2:50:55
is starting to slip into incel dumb to please,
2:50:57
please, please reach out to them, have a conversation
2:50:59
about why they believe the things that they do,
2:51:02
as factually and calmly as you can. More
2:51:05
often than not, incels have an incredibly childlike,
2:51:07
immature sense of emotion and view of the
2:51:09
world, and their views have not been challenged
2:51:11
or contested by others. This
2:51:13
also comes along with perceived victim complexes
2:51:15
that are intensified within these echo chambers.
2:51:18
Even when it seems to be pointless and you're not getting through to
2:51:20
them, keep pressing. Obviously,
2:51:23
the views that incels hold are disgraceful,
2:51:25
abhorrent, and are usually mind-numbingly infuriating to
2:51:27
listen to. Many people don't want
2:51:29
to expose themselves to the shit that is spewed by
2:51:31
incels and the natural reaction is to get as far
2:51:33
away from that person as possible. I also
2:51:35
realize that this is not realistic in every
2:51:37
and all interactions with incels, as some are
2:51:39
just too hateful and rage-fueled to be reasoned
2:51:42
with, like your former friend you mentioned. But
2:51:44
I promise, if you are the reason
2:51:46
why even one would-be incel questions or
2:51:49
stops themselves even a little bit from
2:51:51
diving deeper into the manosphere, you are
2:51:53
helping prevent further indoctrination and isolation within
2:51:55
these fucked-up communities and potentially saving innocent
2:51:57
lives later down the line. We assume that this is a real
2:51:59
and real thing. cannot just stand by and let it
2:52:01
all go unchecked. And we cannot and should not
2:52:03
wait until in-cell related violence has already occurred to
2:52:05
try and put a stop to it. And
2:52:08
if you feel that your unfriendly neighborhood in-cell
2:52:10
is a threat to themselves, you or others
2:52:12
don't hesitate to report them. Make
2:52:14
it your business. Make it your problem. I
2:52:16
cannot say how many in-cell attacks could have
2:52:18
been prevented if authorities had been involved sooner
2:52:20
and if someone had just said something. I
2:52:23
could honestly keep writing about this topic and I know there are
2:52:25
a lot of important arguments and aspects I left out like
2:52:28
freedom of speech argument, intersection with
2:52:30
white supremacy, lack of moderation within
2:52:32
online forums, etc. But I wanted to
2:52:34
try and condense it as much as I could. I think
2:52:36
it's something we can't gloss over when discussing insulin and
2:52:38
the dangers that come with it. Keep
2:52:40
on sucking. Don't stop doing what you're doing. It's more important
2:52:42
than you know. 3.5 out of
2:52:45
5 stars would highly recommend Sophie
2:52:47
R. Well, Sophie, holy shit, you're a great
2:52:49
writer. So much awesome information packed
2:52:52
into a few paragraphs. I hope
2:52:54
your research helped you get into grad school or whatever you were hoping
2:52:56
it would do for you. I think
2:52:59
you might be able to school Mogme if
2:53:01
your school size is a reflection of your powerful
2:53:03
brain. Please don't school Mogme. He'll give
2:53:05
me a headache. But seriously, thanks for showing
2:53:07
how we should not get distracted by all the silly terminology
2:53:09
to the point that we don't see it as a big
2:53:12
problem. Yes, talk to
2:53:14
people who have these beliefs, challenge them, reason
2:53:16
with them, try and get them to take
2:53:18
the Tony P route, leave these echo chambers
2:53:20
and focus on personal improvement. Fucking
2:53:22
rope fuel. That is dark. One
2:53:25
more update now. Quick one. Silly
2:53:28
one coming in from dried
2:53:30
up sacks KB. No subject
2:53:32

2:53:36
disease where a symptom is vaginal dryness. And
2:53:38
