The Ford F-150 truck drives smart design

0:02

forward. The standard 12-inch productivity screen helps

0:04

you get what you need done too.

0:07

And the available Pro-Access tailgate improves access

0:09

to bed and cargo and utilization of

0:11

the bed, including when towing a trailer.

0:14

Together with a wider bumper step, it's easier

0:16

to access the bed and load in tight

0:18

spaces. An available Pro-Power onboard

0:20

serves as a mobile power source, providing up

0:23

to 7.2 kilowatts of power to charge a

0:25

bed full of electric dirt bikes or run

0:27

an entire job site worth of tools. I'm

0:30

still driving my 2016 F-150 truck and 90,000 miles in. As

0:34

long as I keep it clean, it honestly still looks brand

0:37

new. I've taken it down snow-covered, forest-service

0:39

roads, taken it out camping, put a ton

0:41

of miles on it on the freeway, had

0:43

five adults in the cabin for long trips,

0:45

and it's been great everywhere. Super dependable. I

0:47

still love the way it looks, nice and

0:49

rugged design, but with a super comfortable interior.

0:51

And I'm still very happy with the quality

0:53

sound system and heated seats. And since I

0:55

bought my 2016 F-150 truck, the

0:59

list of standard amenities that make a truck

1:01

feel like a luxury vehicle have only grown.

1:04

1:42

Joseph Paul Franklin was a complicated

1:45

guy. He was smart enough to escape

1:47

from an interrogation room after being arrested for a

1:49

double murder in Utah, smart enough

1:51

to continually avoid capture, or even identification

1:53

for up to 21 murders committed across

1:55

11 states over three

1:57

years. He continually changed identities.

2:00

carefully planned numerous attacks and once even

2:02

escaped from authorities at the courthouse while

2:04

he was on trial by quickly MacGyvering

2:06

his way into a locked elevator. And

2:09

yet, he was also dumb and

2:11

delusional enough to think he could single-handedly spark a

2:13

race war, similar to the

2:15

apocalyptic and insane helter-skelter scenario envisioned

2:17

by Charles Manson. Franklin

2:19

was an American serial killer convicted of murdering eight

2:21

people in five different states during a three-year murder

2:24

spree that took place between 1977 and 1980. Franklin

2:28

targeted Jewish people, black people,

2:30

interracial couples, and young white

2:33

women who he found out had previously dated

2:35

black men. Yeah, he was that

2:37

racist. He also shot a black

2:39

civil rights leader from being publicly seen with

2:41

white women, a white porn mag publisher who

2:43

dared to publish a sexual pictorial of a

2:45

black man and a white woman together, and

2:48

two black children who were just walking to the store to

2:50

buy some candy. Joseph Franklin typically

2:52

killed his victims in sniper-style shootings, hiding

2:54

out in a concealed spot shooting victims

2:56

from a distance where they could not

2:58

see their deaths coming. He was inspired

3:00

by terrible people like Adolf Hitler and Charles

3:03

Manson, and deplorable hate groups like

3:05

the KKK and the American Nazi Party. He

3:07

became interested in white supremacist ideologies when he

3:09

was a confused and angry teenager looking for

3:12

a group to belong to and a cause

3:14

to believe in. He

3:16

would leave every white supremacist group he joined. They

3:18

were never serious enough about

3:21

their racial hate for his liking. Joseph

3:23

Paul Franklin was the rare white supremacist

3:25

who disturbed most other white supremacists by

3:28

essentially being too racist. He

3:30

didn't want to just sit around and talk about

3:32

how much he hated non-whites. He wanted to take

3:34

action against them, deadly action. He

3:37

committed his first known racially motivated attack in September of

3:39

1976. When he sprayed

3:41

an interracial couple with Mace, just a

3:43

year later in 1977, he began

3:45

his series of cross-country murders, funding

3:48

his violent crimes mainly through bank

3:50

robberies and paid blood bank donations.

3:53

His final arrest kicked off a series of

3:55

numerous trials across several states and led to

3:57

a huge battle between the Missouri State Department

3:59

and the United States. Department of Corrections, the

4:01

American Civil Liberties Union, and the

4:03

European Union when it came to which

4:06

drug could and would be used to lethally

4:08

inject him. This week

4:10

we discuss the life and crimes of Joseph Paul

4:12

Franklin looking into how he went from a lonely

4:14

abused boy into a still lonely hate-filled killer in

4:16

a true crime serial killer race is

4:19

just an illusion and we are

4:21

all on the same human meat sack team whether

4:23

we want to accept that or not addition

4:26

of TimeSuck. This is Michael McDonald and

4:28

you're listening to TimeSuck. Happy

4:44

Monday. Once again welcome to the Cult

4:47

of the Curious. I'm Dan Cummins,

4:49

Sir Sucksalot, blood atonement arbiter,

4:51

possible son of perdition and you are definitely

4:54

listening to TimeSuck. Still

4:56

not quite ready to discuss the recent

4:58

controversial episode about one of the most heinous

5:00

serial killers I've ever heard of, Richard Byrd,

5:03

Las Vegas Strip Strangler. Be sure and

5:05

check that out if you haven't already. Like

5:07

I said last episode, wow,

5:10

just wow. And

5:13

that's it, no announcements. We're just going to hop

5:15

on the wild ride that was the

5:17

chaotic life of Joseph

5:19

Paul Franklin. Today,

5:27

going to lay this out by beginning with a

5:29

brief introduction of Joseph Paul Franklin and his

5:32

racist beliefs which were the primary motivation for

5:34

his murder spree. Then jumping

5:36

into the timeline, we'll try and understand how the

5:38

hell he became the monster he became by examining

5:40

his timeline which as you are probably assuming was

5:43

far from ideal. Didn't

5:45

have the best childhood and the timeline will

5:47

continue until he is eventually executed by the

5:49

state of Missouri after a very prolonged battle

5:52

between the government, prisoner advocacy

5:54

groups, international pharmaceutical companies

5:56

and even the European Union.

5:59

Interesting insight. to how complicated carrying out

6:01

a death penalty can be in modern times. Here

6:04

we go. Joseph Paul Franklin was

6:06

a, you know, a supreme being,

6:09

superhuman, smarter, stronger,

6:11

handsomer, talenteder than

6:14

most of us could ever hope to aspire to be thanks

6:17

to superior Aryan genetics. He

6:19

was one of the select members of the master race, a

6:22

demigod, walking amongst us mere

6:24

mudblood mortals. Or,

6:27

either that or, he was a mentally

6:29

ill victim of extreme abuse as a child

6:32

who wanted to finally feel superior because he

6:34

had long felt so inferior and when he

6:36

was introduced to, you know, white supremacist ideology,

6:38

it spoke to him. It allowed him to

6:40

embrace a bunch of twisted, fabricated victim mentality

6:42

bullshit. Some, you've only been

6:44

labeled a loser and feel like

6:46

a loser because your white birthright

6:48

was stripped from you by a

6:50

leftist, anti-white, pro-inferior race agenda bullshit.

6:53

It made him feel strong. It made him feel

6:55

like a hero in his life story instead of

6:57

as a victim or villain. It made him

6:59

feel like he was an important revolutionary. Instead

7:02

of what was the truth, he was a cold-blooded

7:04

killer of innocent men, women, and children who were

7:06

only guilty of being born from a lineage not

7:08

as European-centric as his own. He was

7:10

a monster. At the

7:12

age of 27, this confused and delusional mess of

7:14

a meat sack, this man with a dangerous hornet's

7:16

nest of a mind, began a series

7:18

of murders that lasted from 1977 to 1980. Killed

7:22

at least 15 people in 11 states according

7:24

to the FBI, more likely 21. Joseph

7:26

Paul Franklin truly was so confused about who he was,

7:29

he even changed his name thanks to

7:31

struggles with his identity. He was not

7:33

born Joseph Paul Franklin. He was

7:35

actually born James Clayton Vaughn, Jr. He

7:38

would later change his name to show his admiration for,

7:41

not a combo I expected. I don't think this is a combo

7:43

anyone would expect. Benjamin Franklin

7:46

and Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels.

7:50

Okay. So, here's a video of him

7:52

being a racist. Was Benjamin Franklin racist? Well,

7:55

he was a white dude, born in Boston in 1706, so, you

7:58

know, yeah. However,

8:00

he evolved greatly over the course of his life.

8:02

The sounding father of America, while he owned slaves

8:04

as a young man, spoke out against the practice

8:06

of slavery later in his life, which was not

8:09

typical for those times. Joseph

8:11

must have not been a great student in history. Yes,

8:13

he wasn't familiar with Benjamin Franklin's connection

8:15

to the Williamsburg Bray School in Williamsburg,

8:17

Virginia. It was a school for

8:19

both free and slave black children founded in 1760 and opened

8:23

at Franklin's suggestion. And

8:25

it was open because previously Benjamin's wife, Deborah, encouraged

8:27

her husband to visit a new school for enslaved

8:29

and free black children in Philadelphia. And after his

8:32

visit, Franklin admitted that while he

8:34

had previously held a low opinion of the natural

8:37

capacities of the black race, upon

8:40

observing the children at school, it had proven

8:42

his prejudices wrong. He now knew

8:44

that they were, quote, in every respect equal

8:47

to that of white children in

8:49

every respect. Once he

8:51

challenged his ignorant prejudices with some empirical observation

8:53

as an intelligent man, he realized the

8:56

error of his ways. That guy, not

8:59

a good counterpart for Joseph Goebbels.

9:03

Goebbels was one of Hitler's closest, most rabid

9:05

devoted followers. He was the right minister of

9:07

propaganda from 1933 all the way until his

9:09

death in 1945. He never evolved, held

9:13

deeply rooted racist beliefs. No one pushed harder

9:15

for the Holocaust, for the final solution than

9:18

that guy. He was so racist that the

9:20

day after Hitler killed himself in his bunker,

9:22

Goebbels and his wife also took their own

9:24

lives right after he conspired to poison all

9:26

six of their kids because he would rather

9:28

see them dead than live in a world

9:30

where Jews and other minorities were treated as equals.

9:33

So again, the pairing of Benjamin Franklin and Joseph Goebbels,

9:36

that makes very little sense. But are

9:38

we really surprised that a white supremacist who went

9:40

on a killing spree to start a race war would

9:43

make choices that were not logical? This

9:45

guy's entire adult life was one illogical choice

9:48

followed by another. Joseph

9:50

Franklin was first drawn to white supremacist groups when he

9:52

was a teenager. Started associating with

9:54

white supremacist groups and became increasingly

9:56

confrontational towards minorities in the teens

9:58

according to the FBI, who

10:01

also writes on their website, by

10:03

the mid-70s, he had rejected even the most radical

10:05

hate groups because he didn't think they took their

10:07

hatred far enough. He wanted

10:09

to attack, not just sit around complaining. His

10:12

self-directed mission, he later suggested, was

10:14

to incite his fellow supremacists to

10:16

action. That's fucking

10:18

crazy. To be at a

10:20

KKK meeting and be frustrated that

10:22

they're not racist enough. Come

10:25

on, guys! Fuck

10:27

are we doing? Are we gonna go to

10:29

war? Are we just gonna sit around and wear funny hats? Only

10:33

thing you fuckers seem interested in is lynching,

10:35

grocery store donuts, cheap coffee, and

10:38

another thing before I leave. Some of

10:40

you fuckers need to stay out of the sun a lot more than you've

10:42

been doing. Do you want to be white? Or do you

10:44

want to look like the Mexicans and Italians and

10:46

shit? We're supposed to, you know, be hating.

10:49

Surprised you fuckers don't want to

10:51

hold meetings at some goddamn taco Tuesday. Yeah,

10:54

Franklin didn't want to talk. He wanted to do. Start a

10:56

race war by targeting Jewish people, black people, or

10:58

people in interracial relationships. At least

11:01

that's what he claimed. Southern Poverty

11:03

Law Center writes, although he didn't use the

11:05

term, his crimes were what other racists would

11:07

come to call acts of Phineas priests. Yeah,

11:12

Phineas priests based on the Bible story describing Phineas

11:14

killing of a man and woman of different tribes

11:16

who were having sex. Many

11:18

white supremacists see this story as proof that God approves

11:21

of murdering race mixers. Franklin's

11:24

racially motivated crimes would attract the attention of the

11:26

FBI. He was the one of the first serial

11:29

killers caught in part thanks to some new procedures

11:31

they were developing. A

11:33

little bit. They definitely worked on some

11:35

stuff with him. I don't know how much it really helped

11:37

a little bit. FBI decided to use

11:39

a new approach of criminal profiling to try and

11:41

capture Franklin at the very end. The

11:44

FBI's Behavioral Science Unit had been created in 1972. The

11:47

BSU began profiling serial killers in 1976. Douglas's

11:51

three-year murder spree began in 1977. And

11:54

the FBI's new behavioral analysts

11:56

profiled Joseph Paul Franklin and shared their

11:58

profile with law enforcement. and the public,

12:01

again, at the very end, like in the last few

12:03

weeks when he was on the loose. There were two

12:06

important details that made public. A description of Joseph's tattoos

12:08

and a habit of going to blood donation banks to

12:10

make a little extra money to

12:12

fuel his crimes. Former

12:14

FBI unit chief John Douglas and

12:16

his partner, Agent Bob Ressler, pioneered the behavioral

12:18

research program. We talked about that in the

12:20

BSU suck a while back. Within the

12:22

FBI, with the help of Dr. Ann Burgess, who

12:25

is currently still a professor at Boston College at

12:27

the age of 87 years young, they

12:30

began compiling the database of information about serial

12:32

offenders. They interviewed serial

12:34

killers like Ed Kemper and

12:36

mentally disturbed killers who also

12:39

thought they were important players

12:42

in the impending race war like Charles

12:44

Manson to understand the minds of

12:46

these killers, what motivates them and thus how to catch them. Douglas

12:49

wrote about how the FBI profiled Franklin in

12:51

his book, The Killer's Shadow, the FBI's hunt

12:53

for a white supremacist killer, published

12:55

in 2020. Douglas

12:58

wrote that this case marked a turning point where the

13:00

FBI started to consider the interview program as a tool

13:02

that could help them identify suspects. Douglas

13:05

said, most of my cases

13:07

were unsub cases, unknown subject

13:09

cases. Now here is a known person who

13:11

just escaped from prison and no one knows where he is in the United

13:13

States. So is there anything that

13:15

I've learned from these other cases that I was working and doing

13:18

interviews with that I could possibly apply to this case? Douglas

13:21

predicted that Joseph Franklin would go back to areas he

13:23

felt familiar with, like Mobile,

13:25

Alabama, and Franklin was seen in Mobile

13:27

shortly before he was captured down in

13:29

Florida. A few weeks later, a blood

13:32

bank operator in Florida after he was in Mobile

13:35

contacted the FBI because he had seen a man

13:37

matching the description they suggested sending out. Following

13:40

his arrest, Franklin was transported across the

13:42

country for the next two decades to

13:44

face murder charges in multiple states. He

13:47

would be convicted of both the state and federal levels. Regarding

13:49

what he learned about Franklin's motives, John Douglas said the

13:51

victim could have been anyone. Well,

13:54

kind of. He targeted interracial couples, Jewish people,

13:56

black people. Just his attitude alone was

13:59

disturbing. As many of the murderers I've interviewed,

14:01

there's usually a sexual bent to their crimes. Sometimes

14:03

they'll show emotion even if it's bullshit, but

14:06

he was a different animal. I was hoping for

14:08

a faint glimmer of remorse. Instead, he was always

14:10

bragging, boasting, even trying to educate us on how

14:12

he planned all his crimes. Now,

14:15

he was real proud of himself. About

14:17

to jump into the timeline now. Before I do real

14:19

quick, I found it interesting that this dude was so

14:21

racist. Even

14:23

the white supremacy community in America was divided over whether

14:26

or not this guy was a hero, a

14:28

brave martyr for their cause, or a lunatic who took

14:30

shit too far. Yeah, the dude so racist

14:32

he made other white supremacists cringe. I didn't think that was possible. After

14:37

Franklin's execution, there was an intense

14:39

debate on stormfront.org, a popular white nationalist

14:42

web forum launched in 1996, described

14:45

as a neo-Nazi internet forum, and

14:47

the web's first major racial hate site. Stormfront

14:50

Formax is one of the largest online

14:52

gatherings of racism for the Holocaust denial

14:54

of the world, with threads on

14:56

this theme gaining hundreds of thousands of views. And

14:59

Stormfront was founded by Don Black, former

15:01

Alabama KKK leader, man

15:03

so racist the UK banned him in 2009 from ever

15:05

entering their country again. He once

15:08

told an Italian journalist in 2008 that

15:10

Stormfront was the new KKK. And

15:13

this guy wrote about Joseph Paul Franklin saying,

15:15

I've been contemplating how my life would have

15:17

been different had he remained the only

15:19

white nationalist I'd ever met. I'd

15:21

have quit and discussed. Ah,

15:24

Franklin was too extreme, too racist for a

15:26

guy not allowed to visit the UK ever,

15:28

specifically for the racist views he espouses. Most

15:32

other white nationalists seemed to love him though. And

15:35

still do William Pierce, who founded the National

15:37

Alliance, a neo-Nazi organization in 1974 and

15:39

would lead it until his death in 2002, greatly

15:42

admired Joseph Paul Franklin, Southern

15:45

Poverty Law Center, or SPLC,

15:47

wrote that the National Alliance was for decades

15:50

the most dangerous and best organized neo-Nazi formation

15:52

in America. Explicitly genocidal in

15:54

its ideology, any materials call

15:56

for the eradication of the Jews and other races and

15:58

the creation of the Jews. of an all-white

16:00

homeland. Pierce attempted to

16:03

immortalize Franklin by dedicating his 1989 novel Hunter

16:06

to him. William Pierce

16:08

wrote in his dedication in Hunter, dedicated

16:11

to Joseph Paul Franklin,

16:13

the lone hunter, who saw his

16:15

duty as a white man and did what

16:17

a responsible son of his race must do, to

16:20

the best of his ability and without regard for

16:23

the personal consequences. I

16:25

got acting like what this dude did

16:27

was righteous, just responsible, fucking outrageous. William

16:30

Pierce never did any of this shit.

16:33

Both William Pierce and Don Black, by the way, had

16:35

children who would both grow up to hate and speak

16:37

out against them. Pierce's son,

16:39

Pierce's son Kelvin co-authored a book published

16:41

in 2020 called Sins of My Father

16:43

Growing Up with America's Most Dangerous White Supremacist.

16:47

Apparently, in addition to being a racial hate monger, Pierce

16:49

was a woman beater. Kelvin said he

16:51

was emotionally and physically abusive to his mom, the

16:53

first of his five wives. The

16:55

last three of his wives were all male-order brides from

16:58

Hungary. The first two left him

17:00

for being such an asshole, and the last one who

17:02

stayed with him the last five years of his miserable

17:04

life reported being miserable living with him the entire time

17:06

and only stayed to get her citizenship. He

17:09

lives down to supreme. His

17:11

supremacists never do. Pierce

17:13

wrote his novel Hunter under the pseudonym

17:15

Andrew McDonald, and Hunter depicts a serial

17:17

killer similar to Joseph Paul Franklin, who

17:20

targets government officials and interracial couples. We've

17:23

talked about Pierce before. He's also the guy who wrote the

17:25

Turner Diaries, published in 1978, also

17:27

under the pseudonym Andrew McDonald. That

17:30

book depicts a violent revolution in the US, which

17:32

leads to the overthrow of

17:34

the federal government, a nuclear war, and ultimately

17:36

a race war, which leads to

17:38

the systematic extermination of non-whites and Jews. All

17:41

groups opposed by the novel's protagonists, Earl

17:43

Turner, including Jews, non-white people,

17:46

liberal actors, and politicians are murdered

17:48

in mass. The Turner

17:50

Diaries was described when it came out as

17:52

being explicitly racist and anti-Semitic by

17:54

the New York Times and has been labeled the Bible of

17:56

the racist right by the FBI. That shitty

17:59

book has been very influential in shaping recent

18:01

decades of white nationalism and the later

18:03

development of the white genocide conspiracy theory

18:05

that claims a secret global Jewish cabal,

18:08

you know, been puppet masters,

18:10

pulling the strings on an in-progress genocide

18:12

of us whites through forced assimilation. We're

18:14

being brainwashed into having sex with so

18:16

many sexy non-white Taylor Safeeda. They're

18:19

so fucking hot, I mean, horrible. And

18:21

our race, which is not really a race at all, just

18:24

a skin color that many races share, is being eradicated

18:26

through mass immigration that will eventually lead

18:28

to a true violent genocide.

18:31

This book has inspired numerous hate crimes and acts of

18:33

terrorism, including the 1974 assassination of

18:36

a Jewish radio host out of Denver, Allen

18:38

Berg, who openly mocked white

18:40

nationalists, the 1995

18:42

Oklahoma City bombing masterminded by former

18:44

suck subject Timothy Noodle McDry-Ween McVey,

18:48

and the 1999 London nail bombings that

18:50

killed three people and injured 140, four of

18:53

whom lost limbs. This one book

18:55

is estimated to have greatly influenced perpetrators and over

18:57

200 murders. I'm

18:59

sure Franklin was familiar with it. Likely

19:02

read it during his murder spree, found it tremendously

19:04

inspiring, I guess, a reminder that he

19:06

was good and brave in righteous. Just

19:08

like that hateful dumb fuck book continues to

19:10

inspire ignorant, savage thugs like Franklin, now his

19:13

story also inspires others. Still

19:15

today, there are many people who believe that

19:17

Joseph Paul Franklin was doing something good by

19:19

targeting black people, Jewish people, interracial couples. There

19:22

are still many who hold anti-Semitic beliefs, other

19:25

racist beliefs who do not approve of

19:27

interracial relationships. With that

19:29

primer complete in our narrative this week framed, let's

19:31

get into the weeds. Try to

19:33

understand how James Clayton Vaughn Jr.

19:36

transformed into Joseph Paul Franklin in

19:38

today's time suck of his life and crimes.

19:43

Trap on those boots soldier, we're

19:45

marching down a time suck

19:47

timeline. James

19:55

Clayton Vaughn Jr. was born on

19:57

April 13, 1950 in Mobile, Alabama. From

20:00

the very beginning, he would be called Jimmy. Jimmy!

20:03

And Jimmy was the son of a World

20:05

War II veteran who became a butcher, James

20:07

Vaughan Sr., and Helen Rao, who most frequently

20:09

worked as a waitress. His

20:11

father will spend his final years in a psychiatric

20:13

hospital in Biloxi, Mississippi. He suffered a

20:16

head wound from enemy fire in Iwo Jima, left

20:18

him with convulsions, speech impediment, and the need to use

20:20

a cane to walk. Helen

20:22

was the daughter of Nazi-supporting German

20:25

immigrants. After growing up, his

20:27

mentally ill father would frequently beat his

20:29

very racist mother to the point of

20:31

causing at least one miscarriage, and then his mom would beat

20:33

the shit out of the kids. Jimmy grew

20:35

up in a shift storm. He also grew up

20:37

very poor. When he was born, his family was living hand-to-mouth.

20:40

We're living in a recently integrated,

20:42

formerly white-only, low-income Alabama housing project

20:44

directly across the street from a

20:46

black nightclub, cue a lot of

20:48

racial tension. Jimmy

20:50

will later claim that the family was so

20:53

poor, they often went hungry, and he felt

20:55

that malnourishment adversely affected both his physical and

20:57

mental development. Jimmy was one

20:59

of four kids. Age is not listed in the sources,

21:01

but Jimmy is described as having been second to the

21:03

oldest. He had two sisters, Carolyn and Marilyn. Carolyn

21:05

was the oldest child, and then he

21:07

had a younger brother, Gordon Vaughan, and of course, Marilyn,

21:10

his younger sister. James Sr.

21:12

lost a job soon after Jimmy was born, as

21:14

far as being a butcher, seemed to focus mostly

21:16

on drinking after that, drinking and beating his wife.

21:19

Carolyn said in a 1980 interview that their father

21:21

was arrested many times for public drunkenness, became a

21:24

severe alcoholic, who was sometimes home, often

21:26

night – often not, excuse me, would

21:28

leave the family for various lengths of time they wouldn't know when he was

21:30

going to return. Then he finally left for good

21:32

when Jimmy was eight. Once his dad was out

21:34

of the house, it sounded like Helen abused the kids more than ever. One

21:38

family friend described Helen as a full-blooded

21:40

German, a real strict, perfectionist lady. I

21:42

never saw her beat any of them, but they told me stories.

21:45

A lot of the stories would focus on Jimmy. Jimmy,

21:47

from what his sisters would later say, would take the brunt of the beatings.

21:51

Jimmy's sisters recalled that he was a quiet

21:53

boy who stayed close to home. He enjoyed

21:55

drawing, music, was very interested in

21:57

religion, didn't have a lot of friends, didn't

21:59

play sports. sports, was

22:01

kind of so unmemorable as a kid that

22:04

interviewed years later his old teachers wouldn't even

22:06

remember him. Sister Carolyn

22:08

said that her brother, before he dropped out of

22:10

high school and would leave home for good years

22:12

later, developed a severe hatred for their mother. Jimmy

22:15

would later elaborate on his mother's childhood and share

22:17

some examples of abuse in an interview with the

22:20

Chattanooga Times Free Press, an interview he gave not

22:22

long before he was executed for his confessed

22:24

crimes. He said, my

22:26

mama was the one abusing me because she was abused by her

22:28

own mother. She told her that

22:30

Mort, she told her that Mort used

22:32

to beat her, told me, I think he meant to say.

22:35

She called her Mort for some reason or another, her mother.

22:37

She told us one time that Mort was beating her really

22:39

bad and she was crying and yelling. And so Mort stuck

22:42

a piece of cloth down in her mouth to stop her

22:44

from yelling when she was beating her. And the cloth got

22:46

stuck in her throat and she almost strangled. Her

22:48

mother used to beat her and she was returning the favor

22:50

on her own children. And she, for

22:52

some reason, loves to beat her children. She

22:55

would walk up behind you when you were eating and with

22:57

a big hand slap, a big hand slap you in the

22:59

face. It would almost knock me off the chair. She'd

23:02

go, sit up there and eat that right. Like

23:04

I was doing something wrong while I was sitting there eating breakfast in the morning.

23:07

Kind of made you real nervous too. She was

23:09

always yelling, you know, it seemed like she didn't want to give

23:11

anybody a moment's peace. She didn't want anyone to

23:13

relax at all around her. She always wanted to fight.

23:17

Yeah, imagine he's, okay, let's take it, let's say he's being

23:19

honest here, not exaggerating because it's toward the end of his

23:21

life when he's trying to get out of a death sentence.

23:24

But imagine that's your mom. Just

23:27

walking around, tossing out insults, fucking slapping you

23:29

out of nowhere, just for funsies. Like

23:32

you don't have to do anything wrong and you just get hit

23:34

hard in the face. Why? Because

23:36

mama's an angry human being. What

23:39

a pile of shit. I hate bullies. And that's

23:41

what child beaters are, right? Bullies. And

23:43

I like it when they get a taste of their own medicine. She

23:46

knew better, you know, getting beat like that than

23:48

dishing out on your kids. That's

23:50

somehow worse to me than doing that when

23:52

you weren't beat as a kid. Right?

23:55

I hate it when the bully becomes the bully. Helen knew

23:57

how it felt to be treated like that. Knew how scared

23:59

she was. was the physical and emotional

24:01

pain, but she did it anyway and

24:04

apparently enjoyed it. If you believe what

24:06

he's saying there. Joseph would later tell the

24:08

St. Louis Post-Dispatch, my mother was full-blooded German who

24:10

was five foot nine with about 170 pounds. She

24:12

could hit really hard with her hands and

24:14

she liked to beat us with her hands, slap us, hit us with

24:17

switches or belts. One time she took

24:19

a long stick two and a half feet long about two inches

24:21

in diameter. I'd gone into the fridge and

24:23

taken some milk out to pour into a dish for a

24:25

cat I brought home and when she found

24:27

out she took that stick and started hitting me as hard as she could.

24:30

All the kids were punished physically and

24:32

frequently and like that saddled story

24:35

the man beat his wife and then his wife beats the kids and

24:37

then the kids beat the dog and then the dog beats the cat.

24:39

How violence creates more violence. Some

24:42

of the children including Jimmy would deal with

24:44

their feelings of being powerless victims of abuse

24:46

by feeling powerful abusing others. Carolyn

24:48

said that both her brothers took pleasure in abusing

24:50

cats such as by hanging

24:52

them by their tails from clotheslines. So

24:55

fucked up. Carolyn from the sounds

24:57

of a few interviews and other sources seems to

24:59

have raised her other siblings more than her mother

25:01

or father did. When Jimmy was

25:03

seven he suffered a significant injury that made him lose

25:05

most of his vision and his right eye. This would

25:08

alter his life trajectory a bit. Accounts

25:10

differ on what caused the eye injury. One story is that Jimmy hurt

25:12

his eye when he crashed a bike. Another story

25:15

is he was injured when playing with the BB gun with his

25:17

little brother. Jimmy's eye injury seems

25:19

to have been made significantly worse at least he believed

25:21

it was made worse by his mom refusing to take

25:23

him to a doctor after it happened. FBI

25:26

profiler author John Douglas will state it

25:28

only made him despise his mother more. He

25:31

ends up dropping out of high school. He wants to

25:33

become a police officer but he can't. So he's

25:35

feeling inadequate and is filled with rage. He

25:37

can't become a police officer because of his eyesight. He

25:40

then becomes gravitated towards extreme groups like the

25:42

American Nazi Party and the Ku Klux Klan

25:45

before he decides that's not enough wants to take

25:47

matters into his own hands. That was the birth

25:49

of a lone wolf. I'm

25:51

getting ahead of myself a bit with that quote though. Backing up to

25:53

when Jimmy was eight now he and the

25:55

family moved to Dayton, Ohio then to New

25:57

Orleans before they returned to Alabama. No

26:00

real details about why they moved or where exactly

26:02

they lived. Because their

26:04

childhood was so shitty, his older sister Carolyn would later

26:06

write in a statement seeking

26:08

clemency for Joseph, always on death row,

26:11

that their parents cussed at them, shouted at them, beat

26:13

them, and knocked us around unmercifully. She

26:15

wrote that they were psychologically damaged due to their upbringing. She

26:18

wrote that their brother Gordon had been in and out of

26:20

mental institutions his entire adult life. Carolyn

26:23

and her sister Marilyn also struggled with mental illness.

26:25

As for herself, she wrote, as

26:27

mentally ill as my siblings are, I do not

26:29

remain unscathed. I know that I have

26:31

post-traumatic stress disorder. Just writing about

26:33

our childhood has caused me an undue anguish and tears untold.

26:35

I have been depressed most of my life. I

26:38

have undergone psychiatric treatment for these things.

26:42

Yeah, again, terrible childhood, which

26:44

is usually as we know how it happens, how these

26:46

monsters are born. Moving

26:48

into his teen years now, the abused malnourished

26:50

loner gets real interested in religion. Sister

26:52

Carolyn said when he was about

26:55

16, he went through the Mobile phone book, making

26:57

a list of every church in Mobile and

26:59

visited every one of them. Imagine that,

27:02

going to every church in the city. He

27:05

so badly wanted to find a

27:07

purpose in life to know why

27:09

his life was shit, why his dad left him, why did

27:11

his mom seem to hate him, why was he suffering

27:13

more than so many others around him? How sad, right? If

27:16

the right person would have found him while he was doing the

27:18

searching and helped him make him feel safe and

27:20

loved, understand how his lot in life

27:22

was not his fault, how he would be on his

27:24

own soon, and could build himself a new family of

27:27

his own choosing, well over a dozen people, around

27:29

20 people, might still be alive

27:31

today. He was briefly

27:33

a member of Garner Ted Armstrong's Church of

27:35

God. Garner Ted Armstrong, a popular

27:37

evangelist. When Jimmy was young, a man who

27:39

would carefully step down from the pulpit for a time in

27:42

the mid-90s after being accused of a sexual assault. While

27:44

denying the assault, he admitted infidelity. As

27:47

a teen, Jimmy also briefly became a health food

27:49

fattest, looking for secrets to a

27:51

better life, to various health and fitness trends and

27:53

gimmicks. He would get into weightlifting and eat pretty

27:55

well in his pre-prison days. Jimmy

27:58

was a seeker. a time sucker, a

28:01

member of the cult's the curious, someone who

28:03

desperately wanted to find a greater purpose in life than

28:05

just getting a job, getting married, having a house in

28:07

suburbs, you know, pumping out some kids, paying

28:09

taxes, cheering for the favorite sports team and then

28:11

dying. Not that there's anything wrong with that, right?

28:14

That life works great for many people, but not for

28:16

Jimmy. He wanted something more. He wanted

28:18

to be part of some kind of mission to feel

28:20

important. And he found his meaning

28:22

and purpose in just about the worst possible place. He

28:25

turned from Christianity to white supremacy teachings,

28:27

to Nazism. Some point

28:29

in the mid 1960s, Jimmy stole a copy of

28:31

Mein Kampf from the Mobile Public Library.

28:34

And he was fascinated by the book, according to

28:36

FBI agent Douglas. When

28:38

he was a teen, he was quote, inspired to start a

28:40

race war. After reading Mein Kampf, he would later say, I've

28:43

never felt that way about any other book that I read. It

28:46

was something weird about that book. No,

28:49

it wasn't something weird about that book, Jimmy. There was something weird

28:51

going on with you. It was

28:54

so angry and broken, looking for someone to

28:56

blame, constantly feeling less than

28:58

inferior, rejected. And that book, you

29:00

know, I bet as a young put upon white kid, better

29:02

bet you feel strong, gave you an enemy, an

29:05

enemy you were already familiar with, thanks to

29:07

your pro Nazi grandparents. And I bet your

29:09

mother was racist as fuck. This book reminded

29:11

you, you know, which boogeymen to blame for

29:13

your mistreatment and shortcomings. Over

29:15

20 years ago now, in another life when I was

29:18

a new staff counselor at this crisis residential treatment center

29:20

in Spokane, Washington, I remember being

29:22

alarmed at how many teens in the area living

29:24

on the street had white can or had connection,

29:26

excuse me to white supremacist groups. Another

29:29

guy, Roger, a veteran staff

29:31

counselor there, good smart dude. He

29:33

told me that those kids weren't drawn to those groups

29:35

because they were racist, like I assumed

29:38

they were they were drawn because they were white, they were living

29:41

on the streets, almost always had been

29:43

physically and sexually abused and made to feel less

29:45

than their whole lives often bullied in school, you

29:47

know, growing up jealous of what other kids had

29:49

that they didn't growing up feeling so goddamn alone,

29:51

no one protecting them, no one seeming to give

29:53

a shit, whether they live or die, no one

29:55

seeming to love them. And

29:57

recruiters for the white supremacist groups,

30:00

they find themselves in, the most

30:02

important recruitment tactics they employed were

30:04

like love, inclusion, acceptance,

30:06

safety. You know, these recruiters

30:09

gave them a family, a group to be a valued

30:11

member of. You know, they weren't white trash.

30:13

They were members of a master race. They

30:15

were poor by design, thanks to international Jewish

30:18

bankers pulling the strings and seeking to destroy

30:20

the non-Jewish white race. Jewish

30:22

Illuminati members who would rather bestow opportunities on the

30:24

black man because he was easier to control, easier

30:26

to turn against the whites. That's the kind of

30:28

bullshit they were fed, fed by people

30:30

who gave them a place to stay. Gave them

30:32

friends, gave them titles and

30:34

responsibilities, gave them fucking high fives and hugs.

30:37

I'll never forget Roger talking to me about all that and

30:40

how it clicked then. I understood that these kids,

30:42

you know, or understood them a lot better than

30:44

I did before and replaced a lot

30:46

of my disgust with them with at least some empathy. Jimmy

30:50

Clayton Vaughn, Jr., he was

30:52

one of these kids. He could have

30:54

been saved once before he became a bigger monster than

30:56

the ones who tormented him. Before

30:59

jumping back into his timeline now since I've already popped

31:01

this out for a bit, let's

31:03

use this spot for today's first of two mid-show

31:06

sponsored breaks. This

31:08

show is sponsored by BetterHelp. How

31:10

is your social battery right now? Charged?

31:13

Always charged? Drained? Always

31:15

drained? I'm doing good because I've been

31:18

working out of the house and out of the office more

31:20

lately and getting the alone time to make me so much

31:22

better to be around when I'm not alone. What's

31:25

the right amount of socializing for you and how do

31:27

you recharge? Maybe you thrive around

31:29

people or maybe you need some alone time. I'm

31:31

actually pretty introverted. I like to share

31:34

stories with people and I do like to hang

31:36

out with people, but not all of the time.

31:38

My battery does not recharge ever around a lot

31:40

of people. This is something I've

31:42

been talking about with Debbie, my BetterHelp therapist. She's

31:44

helped me feel not guilty about wanting to be

31:46

alone for at least a few hours a day.

After years of fine print contracts and getting

32:25

ripped off by overpriced wireless providers, if you've

32:27

learned anything, it's that there's always a catch.

32:30

So when you hear that Mint Mobile wireless plans

32:32

32:37

there isn't one. They cut out

32:39

the cost of retail stores and pass those

32:41

sweet savings directly to you. Mint

saving money, like over a 50% price

33:03

drop from what I was paying before,

33:06

the network quality in my experience is

33:08

a bit better than it was with my

Do you love bread? I mean, really, really

34:49

love bread. Who doesn't? Is there anyone? I

34:51

love bread, but I hate worrying about busting

34:54

my belt with all the extra carbs and

34:56

also feeling like I need to take a

34:58

nap 20 minutes after eating it.

35:01

Enter hero bread. Hero bread

35:03

takes the fear of carbs out of bread,

35:05

but still leaves you with that delicious bread

35:07

taste. Hero bread has zero

35:09

to one grams of net carbs, zero

35:12

grams of sugar, and it's high in

35:14

fiber. It's delicious and flavorful, the soft

35:16

fluffy experience you love when enjoying a

35:19

savory breakfast burrito or mouthwatering cheeseburger. There

35:21

is something for every craving, including sliced

35:23

bread loaves, buns, and tortillas. And there

35:26

are monthly small batch drops of indulgent

35:28

favorites like the two grams of net

35:30

carbs, hero croissant, or the

35:32

one gram of net carbs, hero cheddar

35:34

biscuit. My wife, Lindsay made

35:36

chicken enchiladas with green sauce last week, and

35:39

it was delicious. And I had

35:41

no idea she used hero tortillas with zero net

35:43

grams of carbs per serving until after I'd already

35:45

eaten them and told her how great the meal

35:47

was. Don't give up on

35:50

being a breadhead. Hero bread is offering 10% off

36:11

And now back to the mid 60s as

36:13

we continue to examine how Jimmy

36:15

evolved into Joseph. Jimmy's

36:19

best friend in the high school encouraged him to join

36:21

the Nazi party according to his sister Carolyn. She

36:24

told the FBI he was looking for something before the

36:26

Nazi thing. He attended again almost every church and mobile.

36:29

Fascinating with religion, searching for the meaning

36:31

in things. Joseph now started

36:33

subscribing to white supremacist publications wearing

36:35

swastika armbands, which I imagine

36:38

probably didn't make him more popular at school.

36:41

Not totally sure he wore that shit at school though. 17-year-old

36:44

Jimmy dropped out of school before graduating in 1967,

36:47

claimed he wanted to join the Marines. Go

36:49

fight in Vietnam. But he was not eligible

36:51

for the draft again due to that vision loss in his right

36:53

eye. Why mother? Why

36:55

would you not take baby boy to the eye doctor? He

36:59

was able to join the Alabama National Guard though. 1967,

37:03

but was discharged four months later for lack of attendance

37:05

and possession of a handgun whose serial number he had

37:07

filed off. What a dipshit. He

37:09

joins the National Guard but then barely shows up. And

37:12

when he does show up, brings an illegal weapon. It's

37:14

a fucking mess. After dropping out

37:17

of high school, getting booted from the Alabama National

37:19

Guard, Jimmy begins getting into frequent scrapes with the

37:21

police. He'll be arrested for

37:23

assault, carrying concealed weapons, disorderly conduct over

37:25

the next few years. Some

37:27

articles have stated he served some jail time with these

37:29

offenses but couldn't find his actual

37:31

arrest record for any crimes he may have

37:33

committed before the eventual arrest that would

37:35

send him to prison for the rest of his life. In

37:38

February 1968, still 17-year-old Jimmy met a

37:40

new girl in town named Bobby Louise

37:42

Dorman, who was 16. They

37:45

were married just two weeks later and they would

37:47

live happily ever after. Just like all people,

37:49

17 and younger, who married two weeks after meeting typically do.

37:53

Now they were divorced in 10 months. Bobby

37:56

was later interviewed by People Magazine a dozen

37:58

years later, November of 1980, and she said... It

38:01

was just one of them things. He was real

38:03

kind and gentle at first. He said he was going to take care

38:05

of me. And for a few weeks it went

38:07

okay. But then all of a sudden he changed

38:09

like night and day. Something was bothering him a

38:11

lot and he never told me what. He turned real cruel

38:13

and violent. Several times he beat me so hard I

38:15

was afraid he was going to kill me. He

38:18

said Jimmy started experiencing severe headaches. Bobby came

38:20

home twice and found him crying like a

38:22

baby. I never dared

38:24

ask why. Again, a lot of mental illness

38:26

in this guy's family. He was clearly mentally

38:28

ill on some level himself. 1968,

38:31

the Substitze housing project in Mobile, Jimmy and Bobby

38:34

lived in, was integrated. Just like

38:36

his childhood housing project had been. Led

38:38

to a lot of tension. A

38:40

notable upsurge and planned another segregation to sentiment according

38:42

to that same November 24, 1980 People Magazine article.

38:47

During their brief marriage, Bobby found Joseph practicing Nazi salutes

38:49

a few times in the mirror and she saw that

38:51

he had a swatch gassone into his work shirt. She

38:54

said he had a lot of fantasies. He

38:56

used to fantasize that he was a hell's angel. You

38:59

know he had the jeans and the jacket and he carried a

39:01

knife but he never owned a bike. It looked

39:04

like James just wanted something to belong to, something different. I

39:06

guess the Nazis were about as different as you could get.

39:09

Yeah, okay, a couple things here. First,

39:12

where the fuck was he working? Where he felt

39:14

comfortable sewing a swastika into his work shirt. Sources

39:17

don't say. I want to assume that he sewed it

39:19

into a place that was not visible or

39:22

he was promptly fired, I hope. I

39:24

know this was quite a few years ago but I'm having

39:26

a hard time thinking of a place that would require a

39:28

work shirt but also just like ahh, swastika, whatever. Second

39:31

thing, I love that he dressed like he was a member of the

39:33

Hell's Angels but didn't have a motorcycle. Can

39:35

we all please believe that he rode a bicycle

39:38

with his get-up on? And not like a cool street bike

39:41

or a mountain bike, not like a Huffy, like a Huffy

39:43

kids bike. And the job he had

39:45

was a paper route. His

39:47

work shirt was a knock-off Hell's Angels

39:50

MC cut with a swastika patch. Both

39:52

the toughest and fucking saddest looking paper boy

39:54

of all time. September

39:57

18, 1970, Joseph was photographed in a

39:59

Nazi uniform. during a demonstration at the White House.

40:01

It was protesting along with other

40:03

members of the American Nazi Party. The

40:05

fact that Gold of my year, it was Israel's

40:08

first and only female prime minister, was visiting the

40:10

White House. I'm sure the US

40:13

government took their protests very seriously.

40:16

I'm sorry I missed my year, but the US will

40:19

not be working with Israel again in any way

40:21

in the foreseeable future. Mr. President has been forced

40:23

to capitulate to the demands of

40:25

a dozen or so white trash lunatics led

40:27

by that angry skinny guy in the Hell's Angels jacket right in the huffy. He

40:30

doesn't feel comfortable, angry, and many further.

40:32

They're too powerful. Now

40:35

they're ignored. Also by 1970, when Jimmy is

40:37

20, he starts to really become a drifter, moving

40:39

around a lot. Even he

40:41

won't seem to recall later exactly where he was at any given time.

40:45

But he did seem to spend most of the time in Arlington, Virginia,

40:48

headquarters of the American Nazi Party, Atlanta, Georgia,

40:50

Washington, D.C., and Mobile, Alabama. The

40:53

American Nazi Party, formed in March of 1959, is

40:56

still around. How pathetic. Today they're

40:58

called New Order. And

41:01

New Order's Chief of Staff since 2014,

41:03

Martin Kerr, claims that the group is no longer a

41:05

white supremacist group. They just focus

41:07

on advocating in favor of white people, not against

41:09

– this is his words – not against other

41:12

races or ethnicities. We consider the

41:14

white people of the world to be a gigantic

41:16

family of racial brothers and sisters united by ties

41:18

of common ancestry and common heritage. Being

41:21

for our own family does not mean that we hate other families. Let's

41:24

get the fuck out of here. I've talked about this before, but

41:26

it's been a while. There is no racial

41:28

unity. I wish everyone had

41:32

to sign up for a service like 23andMe and

41:34

find out where their expressed genetic traits actually

41:36

come from. How many people are

41:38

all Irish or all Scandinavian?

41:41

How many people are 100% European even? I

41:43

bet at least a quarter of all white supremacists

41:46

aren't even quote white. Not 100%. And

41:50

what the fuck does it even mean to be white or black? Is

41:52

it how you looked? What

41:54

if genetically you're 80% European? 10% African? 10% Pakistani?

41:58

But you look quite a bit like a white person. Does

42:01

that mean you are black? What if

42:03

you're 60% African, 40% European,

42:06

but you look white? Are

42:08

you white? This is why

42:10

racism on a scientific label is so fucking stupid. We're

42:12

all mixed, especially if you go back far enough.

42:15

European ancestry doesn't begin in Europe,

42:17

begin in Africa. Today,

42:20

most scientists I can find who study genetics

42:22

and the origins of our species believe that

42:24

the very first Homo sapiens, common ancestors to

42:26

everyone alive today, first walked in Africa. To

42:29

quote the website of the UK's Natural History

42:31

Museum, scientists are sure that Homo sapiens first

42:34

evolved in Africa, and we know that every

42:36

person alive today can trace their

42:38

genetic ancestry to there. Jimmy's

42:41

brother Carolyn would say that her brother's hatred

42:43

for minorities deepened significantly after he

42:46

joined the American Nazi Party. That makes sense. That

42:48

tracks adds up. Carolyn

42:50

also said that the very last time she saw her brother

42:52

was 1973. He came

42:55

to visit her, learned that their mother had died the

42:57

year before. She said Jimmy

42:59

was gone. We didn't know where when our

43:01

mother died in 1972. A

43:03

year later, he went back to our house, asked where the lady was who

43:05

had lived there, and a little boy told him she was dead. That's

43:10

a crazy way to find out that your parents died.

43:12

What a fucking weird life moment. Carolyn

43:15

also said he was really changed. He

43:17

was wearing a white karate suit, and

43:21

he got upset when he saw I had a black mate. We

43:23

fought about it. I told him he could leave if that was

43:25

how he felt. Can

43:27

we talk about him showing up in a white karate suit for a

43:30

moment? A gi? How much do

43:32

you want to bet he was wearing a black belt but

43:34

hadn't earned a black belt? This

43:36

again shows clearly that Jimmy wasn't just racist. He

43:38

was fucking nuts. That's some crazy shit to do.

43:40

Show up at your sister's house out of the

43:42

blue at 23 years old wearing a fucking karate

43:44

suit, especially as a

43:46

white supremacist. Did he not know that

43:48

karate did not originate in Germany but

43:51

in Okinawa? That shit cracks me

43:53

up about racists. Wouldn't want their kind to associate

43:55

with, say, Mexicans. But have no problem.

43:58

Heading to a Mexican-owned restaurant and grubbing on some dick. Overall,

44:02

they're just a real nonsensical, not real bright

44:04

bunch. Not long after

44:06

seeing his older sister for the last time, Joseph spent

44:08

some time in Marietta, Georgia, just northwest of Atlanta, where

44:11

he'd earned his GED. I hope he's wearing his fucking karate suit while

44:13

he got that in December of 1974. March

44:16

of 1975, he was still living there, and

44:18

he enrolled in DeKalb Community College, also joined

44:21

the National States Rights Party. The

44:23

National States Rights Party was, of course, a

44:25

white supremacist political party, formed in

44:27

Knoxville, Tennessee by a 26-year-old chiropractor,

44:30

Edward Reed Fields, who

44:32

had been involved in white supremacist groups since high

44:34

school and still is today at

44:36

the age of 91. 91 years on

44:38

Earth, and he's still fucking dumb. So

44:40

that's a long time to go without learning much.

44:42

He's a real diehard, never-going-to-change piece of shit. This

44:45

particular party of his, one of a few

44:47

he founded, was dissolved by 1987, and at

44:50

the height of their membership, only had about

44:52

100 dipshits, one of which was our

44:54

boy Jimmy. His younger sister Marilyn told the

44:56

FBI that Joseph said he'd joined the National States Rights

44:58

Party because someone in the American Nazi Party, which

45:01

he was now no longer a member, was conspiring against him.

45:05

This is going to be a pattern with Jimmy. He's not a group guy. Diehard

45:08

white supremacists who could not get along with

45:10

anyone for very long, not even other white

45:12

supremacists. He'll just leave one group after another,

45:16

also dabble with the KKK while he's in Georgia. Well,

45:19

with the National States Rights Party, Joseph sold

45:21

the party's newspaper called The Thunder Boat because

45:23

they were super fucking cool out on the streets of Atlanta

45:25

like the crazy person he was, probably wearing a karate

45:27

suit. He was that guy, the

45:30

guy out of the corner pushing a paper in your face, if

45:32

you look white enough to him, talking about big

45:34

events, big

45:37

stuff coming down the pipe. You got to get ready.

45:39

War's coming. Be scared, be afraid,

45:41

get informed, prepare for the revolution. Soon,

45:44

though, he grew tired of the NSRP. They

45:47

didn't take the action that he was craving. He didn't

45:49

want to sell newspapers. He wanted to do shit that

45:51

would get him written up in the paper. He moved

45:53

to Washington, DC, earned a blue belt in karate, which

45:56

is actually not very impressive. And

45:58

he lives in an abandoned office building. where

46:00

he worked as a maintenance man. That's how you know

46:03

you're a fucking supreme when you have a blue belt

46:05

in karate and you live in an abandoned office building

46:08

where you work as a maintenance guy. Typically

46:10

a blue belt is just one belt above white belt. And

46:14

he just got that belt, you

46:16

know, a year or three after showing up at a sister Carolyn's

46:18

house in a white karate suit, which means she was about as

46:20

good a karate as he was at

46:22

understanding how dumb racism is. 1976,

46:25

Jimmy's younger sister, Marilyn, moved in with him for a while while

46:27

he was living in that abandoned office building

46:30

in Washington suburb of Hyattville, Maryland. She

46:33

said, if he ever saw a white and black together, he'd

46:35

go right up and say, that's disgusting or something like

46:37

that. Lots of people don't like the

46:39

color, but he was one to let you know it. She

46:42

also sounds super fucking racist. He

46:45

got that blue belt confidence. See,

46:47

it was not a huge dude. He did get bigger towards, you

46:50

know, over the years, but no, he's 5'11". I

46:52

think he's still pretty thin at this time. I'm guessing

46:54

he was not approaching any large black men dating

46:57

white women. I bet he was approaching the occasional real

46:59

small timid looking kind of nerdy dude who

47:02

wasn't anywhere near that many other

47:04

black people. I bet Jimmy

47:06

was very selective when it

47:08

came to who he approached to speak his mind

47:10

to, as opposed to

47:12

what Marilyn said. He told her

47:14

he was done with the states rights party and

47:16

the KKK, so after she started to live with him, claimed

47:19

that he left the KKK due to FBI

47:21

harassment, but also they weren't dedicated enough. Joseph

47:24

said he joined a new radical right wing organization, but

47:27

Marilyn couldn't remember which one it was. He

47:29

also told his sister that he had shot a black man in the

47:32

chest, managed to escape a police roadblock

47:34

after he did it, didn't say when or where

47:36

the murder occurred. She didn't know if he was telling

47:38

the truth. Marilyn later told the

47:40

FBI, she didn't think her brother was capable of killing,

47:42

at least not at that time. She also

47:44

said she didn't stay with her brother long because she started

47:47

dating a Hispanic guy. She would later marry. She

47:49

was scared of how her brother would react to be found out

47:52

because, you know, he wouldn't consider her husband white. So

47:55

let's notice how he started to refuse to

47:57

eat in restaurants if they employ black people.

48:00

He's doubling down more and more, getting more and more

48:02

racist. He goes further to this fucking

48:04

rabbit hole of his. September

48:06

8, 1976, Joseph is arrested for

48:08

assault and battery in Maryland, just outside of Washington, D.C.

48:11

The day before, September

48:13

7, the 26-year-old karate

48:15

legend, uh, maced

48:17

an unnamed interracial couple. He probably didn't fucking

48:20

credit chop him. Probably forgot how. He

48:22

maced this interracial couple. He followed from the Kennedy Center in D.C.

48:24

to a location 10 miles away in Montgomery

48:26

County, Maryland. Trapped him on a dead

48:28

end street, sprayed him. The male victim, Aaron Keith

48:30

Miles, who was black, got his license plate number, reported him

48:32

to the police. Uh, Jimmy

48:35

then did not appear for his trial in December, and a

48:37

warrant was issued for his arrest. Uh,

48:40

but he would never go to trial for those charges. Just

48:42

before that incident, he had applied to legally change his name.

48:45

He also told the court clerk when he

48:47

handed in his paperwork that he had plans to

48:49

immigrate and join the armed forces of Rhodesia. He

48:52

said he's a fucking tough motherfucker. Rhodesia was

48:54

an unrecognized state in Southern Africa that

48:56

existed from 1965 to 1979, about the size of Zimbabwe today. It

49:01

was attempting to be a successor state to the

49:03

British colony of Southern Rhodesia. And along with

49:05

South Africa, it was one of two independent states on

49:07

the African continent where a teeny tiny minority

49:09

of white people, uh, you know,

49:12

people of primarily European descent and culture,

49:14

were ruling over a massive majority population

49:16

of those of primarily African descent and

49:18

culture. By 1976, the

49:20

white Rhodesian government had been battling black insurgent forces

49:22

for years in what became known as the Rhodesian

49:25

Bush War. And Jimmy, of course, was

49:27

considering heading to Africa to help

49:29

violently suppress the black population. Jimmy's

49:32

petition to change his name was approved two weeks after

49:34

he made such an interracial couple, and the name change

49:36

helped him avoid arrest because now his warrant was no

49:38

longer in his name. Now

49:40

Joseph Clayton Vaughan Jr. had

49:43

become Joseph Paul Franklin, Karate

49:45

Master! Around this

49:47

time, Joseph, can we call him Jimmy Joe? I

49:49

like Jimmy Joe. Uh, he had

49:51

a Grim Reaper tattooed on his right forearm. It's a

49:53

symbol of the mission, formulated in his mind now. One

49:56

he's almost ready to begin with. All right, killing

49:58

minorities, bombing synagogues. in a delusional

50:01

hope that this was one of the side they made your race for. He

50:04

also asked the same tattoo artist to write Helter

50:06

Skelter on his other arm. Tattoo

50:08

artist said no. So he didn't get

50:10

that one. I love it. What? Helter

50:13

Skelter. The Charles Manson race war shit? Nah

50:16

dude. Get the fuck out of here with that shit. Remember

50:19

what Manson's Helter Skelter was? So

50:21

crazy. He thought he heard secret messages

50:23

because he was out of his mind. In

50:26

the lyrics of the Beatles song Helter Skelter, which was

50:28

featured on their white album, an amazing album,

50:30

came out in November 1968. Manson

50:33

was listening to it within a month. He listened

50:35

over and over again. He became obsessed with it

50:37

and he started to believe, being because he was

50:39

out of his mind, that the Beatles were sending

50:41

messages specifically to him through their songs. They

50:44

were telling him that a race war was inevitable and that he

50:46

would play a major role. And on

50:48

New Year's Eve 1968, he presented his vision of

50:50

Helter Skelter to his followers, his family at Myers

50:52

Ranch near Death Valley, California at that time. He

50:55

was to create another album and this

50:57

album would have more messages in it and it was

50:59

to inspire millions to take up arms in an apocalyptic

51:01

struggle. In his vision, America's white women

51:04

would join up with his family in such numbers

51:06

because he has such charisma that black men would

51:08

no longer have access to them. There would be

51:10

a fucking shortage of hot white women and

51:12

then sexually frustrated that they could no

51:15

longer get to fuck their hot hippie

51:17

white ladies. They'd start to lash

51:19

out and commit violent crimes against us whites and

51:21

the violence would lead to more violence,

51:23

back and forth, retaliations, uprisings, police and

51:25

military crackdowns, riots, whites attacking

51:27

blacks, blacks attacking whites, backs and forth until

51:30

eventually all white people were dead except Charles

51:33

Manson and his family who were hiding

51:35

during this race war in a secret underground

51:37

fucking city. Yes, underneath Death Valley that they

51:39

accessed through a cave. Once

51:43

the war was over, they climbed back up and

51:46

the Manson family, they come back up and

51:48

the black victors not realizing

51:50

they weren't capable of running a government

51:52

now, frustrated that they didn't have white people to run a

51:54

government, would turn to them and put them

51:56

in charge. Yep, that was

51:59

the whole plan. And

52:01

if you don't think that

52:03

makes any sense on any level, yeah,

52:05

you're right. He doesn't. But

52:07

Manson and a few strong members of the family did,

52:09

and later Jimmy Joseph Franklin did, or

52:11

at least he liked the basic premise. 1977

52:15

was the year Franklin's murder spree began. If

52:17

he didn't shoot that unarmed black man in the chest like he claimed

52:19

to his sister, that might have just

52:22

been fantasy, build himself up, preparing to do it for real. Joseph

52:25

would now spend the next three years wandering

52:27

across the South and Midwest, primarily, employing at

52:29

least 18 pseudonyms, changing cars and weapons frequently,

52:31

dying his hair so often it came close

52:33

to falling out. Along the way,

52:35

he killed at least 13 people.

52:39

Numbers vary from source to source. He

52:41

probably killed 21 in a frenzied one-man

52:44

war against minorities. Joseph Franklin

52:46

was 27 years old when he started his killings free, and he'd

52:48

rob up to 16 banks along the way to fund it. On

52:51

July 25, 1977, his first true act

52:54

of war, he detonated a trunk

52:56

load of dynamite. Outside

52:58

the Rockville, Maryland home of Morris

53:00

Amite, a pro-Israel Jewish lobbyist, the

53:02

executive director of the American-Israel Public

53:04

Affairs Committee. While the

53:06

home was very badly damaged, Amite

53:09

and his family were thankfully able to

53:11

escape unharmed. Joseph was never

53:13

arrested for this crime or even a prime suspect. He

53:15

would later confess while in prison, as

53:17

is the case for most of his crimes. Amite,

53:19

his wife's three children, were asleep in the home when the

53:21

explosion went off at 3.20 in the morning. The

53:24

police found a 400-foot extension cord running from the back of

53:26

the house to a nearby street where the bomb had been

53:28

detonated. The blast was so

53:30

powerful, it literally lifted part of the

53:32

roof off of the house next door

53:34

and shattered their windows. In fact, homes

53:36

five blocks away would have broken windows.

53:40

Sadly, the family's beagle puppy was killed

53:42

during the explosion. Well, Jangles

53:44

already hated this guy. Now he for

53:47

sure wants him to die. I

53:49

wonder if Jimmy Joe felt bad about killing the puppy. Or

53:51

since the puppy belonged to a Jewish family, did he believe

53:54

that the puppy was Jewish? Like,

53:56

how do white supremacists feel about the pets of

53:58

minorities they hate? Like does their hatred extend

54:01

to them as well? We need

54:03

to kill all the blacks and the Jews, we all need to

54:05

kill their black and Jew dogs and cats. If

54:07

not stopped, these black and Jew dogs

54:09

and cats will fuck all the white

54:11

out of the world's pure Aryan. White

54:13

dogs and white cats. The

54:16

Illuminati doesn't want to only eliminate white

54:18

people, they want to eliminate white in

54:20

all forms. No more white

54:22

dogs and white cats. No more

54:24

Aryan goldfish. Aryan gerbils,

54:26

white snakes and parakeets. White

54:28

chinchillas, horses, ratchets

54:31

and cockatiels. Japanese white

54:33

fighting fish. Is that a world you won't live in? What

54:36

were your white children? Can our gaze

54:38

upon the white Japanese fighting fish whilst

54:41

repenting their white bunny rabbits and daydreaming

54:43

about adding a white bearded dragon to

54:46

their Aryan reptile collection? Slide

54:49

29, 1977, the best Shalom

54:51

synagogue in Chattanooga, Tennessee, destroyed by another

54:54

bomb. Joseph would also later confess

54:56

to this crime. Stephen Drysdale from

54:58

the Chattanooga Jewish Welfare Federation told the

55:00

Jewish Telegraph Agency that the

55:02

explosion was apparently premeditated. Wires were found leading from

55:05

the synagogue to a motel a hundred yards away.

55:07

The explosion completely destroyed the synagogue and the blast

55:10

was heard all over town. Fortunately

55:12

again, no one was harmed. Congregants had been

55:14

gathered, excuse me the synagogue, for

55:17

evening Shabbat services prior to the explosion but

55:19

they left early due to a poor turnout.

55:22

Drysdale said that they normally would have still been

55:24

at the synagogue at 850 when the explosion happened. The

55:28

synagogue was the only synagogue for Orthodox Jews

55:30

in Chattanooga. The explosion damaged the inner

55:32

structure of the synagogue, collapsed most of the

55:34

wall on the frame building and blew off the roof.

55:37

Blast was centered in the kitchen area. Eight

55:39

men had been present about an hour before the blast but

55:42

left because they needed 10 people present to have

55:44

their meeting. Had just two more

55:46

people showed up that night. Jimmy

55:48

Joe would have likely have killed all of them. Less

55:51

than two weeks later he does kill. August

55:54

7th 1977, Joseph Franklin shoots and

55:56

kills 23 year old Alphonse Manning,

55:58

a black man, and 20. 23-year-old Tony

56:00

Schwinn, a white woman for being an

56:03

interracial couple in Madison, Wisconsin. Joseph

56:05

shot Alphonse and Tony just after he robbed a bank in the

56:07

area. The murders occurred after an

56:10

altercation in a shopping mall parking lot. Alphonse

56:12

backed his car up in front of Mr.

56:14

Franklin's, momentarily blocking him from leaving and that

56:17

pissed him off enough to pop out of the car and shoot him.

56:20

Joseph will confess to these murders February 17, 1984. The

56:24

prosecutor and his trial for these killings called the murders the

56:26

closest thing to killing for sport he had ever seen. Two

56:30

months later, almost to the day, October 8, 1977, Joseph killed again.

56:34

Now he murders Gerald Gordon at the

56:36

Brits Shalom Knesset Israel congregation, a

56:38

synagogue in Richmond Heights, which is a suburb

56:41

of St. Louis, Missouri. Joseph

56:43

shot at numerous people that day, only

56:45

killing Gordon, a 42-year-old Jewish father of

56:47

three who worked as a salesman for

56:49

a packaging materials supplier. Joseph

56:52

wouldn't confess to this murder until 1995. Joseph

56:55

picked the synagogue where Gerald was killed simply by looking

56:57

through the St. Louis Yellow Pages. He

56:59

spent that morning planning his attack. Then he hid in some

57:02

tall grass behind a telephone bowl outside the synagogue waiting

57:04

for people to exit. On this

57:06

day there was a bar mitzvah. 13-year-old Ricky Kalina's bar

57:08

mitzvah began with a beautiful ceremony

57:10

ended with him seeing a family friend get shot

57:13

dead and two others wounded. Joseph

57:15

shot at the group of people exiting the synagogue five times.

57:18

About 200 guests were present in total that day. Gerald

57:22

Gordon was killed directly in front

57:24

of his wife and his three young kids. Gordon

57:28

died in the hospital about two hours after he was shot. Another

57:31

victim was 30-year-old William Lee Ash, hit in the

57:33

left hand and hip by the same bullet. He'd

57:35

lose two fingers but survived his injuries. Final

57:38

victim was a man named Steven Goldman who was

57:40

shot through his suit coats but not seriously injured

57:42

because the bullet just barely grazed his skin. Investigators

57:46

later found that the sniper made a stand to hold the

57:48

rifle steady about three to four hundred feet away from the

57:50

parking lot by driving two spikes into a telephone pole. A

57:53

semi-automatic rifle with a telescopic sight was found at

57:55

the foot of the telephone pole with five spent

57:58

shells. scene

58:00

so he wouldn't be witness walking around with a sniper rifle.

58:03

An empty five round clip was found in the rifle

58:05

and police found a black guitar case most likely used to

58:07

carry the gun to that location. The

58:09

serial number had been scratched off so investigators could

58:11

not trace the weapon to jail.

58:14

William Ash's wife recalled that she initially thought the shots were

58:16

firecrackers until she saw that her husband and Gerald, you

58:18

know, were shot, you know, were bleeding. Her

58:21

husband shouted at her to grab their child after he

58:23

had been shot. Love that so much and she grabbed

58:25

their two year old son and ran back inside. Hail

58:28

William Ash, you tough motherfucker. Gerald's

58:31

wife Sheila was standing next to their car. You're about to get

58:33

in and drive home and she saw her husband fall back under

58:35

the pavement. Other guests exiting

58:37

the bar medsva stayed inside thanks to some kids

58:39

running into the auditorium screaming, they're shooting people, they're

58:42

killing people. A St. Louis

58:44

County helicopter crew did see a man later believed to

58:46

be the sniper running across the pedestrian overpass but

58:49

obviously not identified or captured. For

58:51

almost 20 years none of the

58:53

people shot at would have any idea who had done the

58:55

shooting. Had they been, you

58:57

know, targeted for, you know,

59:00

some specific reason. Had the shooter been caught for

59:02

other crimes? Had they died? Were they local? Would

59:04

they come back to do it again? Four

59:07

months later, February 2nd, 1970, Joseph Franklin

59:09

shot a young and a racial couple in Atlanta.

59:12

22 year old black man, Johnny Brookshire and his 23

59:14

year old white wife, Joy Williams. Johnny

59:17

was killed and Joy was paralyzed from the waist down. She

59:19

was also pregnant at the time of the attack. For

59:22

over 20 years, Joy would have no idea

59:24

who killed her husband, who shot her, why

59:26

they did it. Joseph won't

59:28

confess to this murder until late October of 1999. He'd

59:33

say he shot at Johnny and Joy because he

59:35

didn't like them walking down the streets together. Just

59:37

didn't like the way it looked. That's

59:39

it. He gave his confession to Atlanta homicide

59:41

Sergeant Keith Meadows and Detective Tony Volkaday. Meadows

59:44

told a local news reporter he knew facts about the

59:46

murders that only the murderer could have known. He

59:48

was able to tell us exactly what the victims were wearing at the

59:50

time the shooting took place. Gerald

59:52

would choose to, uh, uh, or

59:55

Georgia, excuse me, would choose not to have him transported for

59:57

a trial since by 1999. It was clear that due

1:00:00

to all his other convictions, he was never getting out

1:00:02

of prison. And he'd already

1:00:04

tried to escape prison and escaping would be

1:00:06

easier if he was transported. A

1:00:09

month later, March 6, 1978, Jimmy Joe shook up

1:00:11

his style a bit and shot at a white

1:00:13

guy on purpose. He

1:00:16

shot Hustler magazine publisher, 35-year-old

1:00:18

porn provocateur Larry Flint and

1:00:21

his lawyer, 47-year-old Gene Reeves

1:00:23

in Lawrenceville, Georgia, after they

1:00:25

exited a popular restaurant where they'd had lunch

1:00:27

following Flint testifying that morning in an obscenity

1:00:30

trial against him. Reeves would nearly

1:00:32

die. He would spend 26 days in the hospital.

1:00:34

He'd been shot in the arm, rushing to Larry after Larry had

1:00:36

been shot. The bullet went through his arm and to the side

1:00:39

of his torso. Larry Flint was shot

1:00:41

in the stomach and the bullet damaged his spine, permanently

1:00:43

paralyzing him from the waist down. The

1:00:45

attack would leave Flint in chronic pain that would lead to

1:00:48

an addiction to opioid painkillers until his

1:00:50

nerve pain was dead and following several

1:00:52

surgeries. His opioid addiction would then lead

1:00:54

to a stroke caused by an overdose that left him

1:00:56

with slurred speech for the rest of his life. And

1:00:59

Joe targeted Flint in retaliation for Hustler

1:01:01

publishing photos of an interracial

1:01:03

couple. Franklin said about the December

1:01:05

1975 issue of Hustler, I

1:01:08

saw that interracial couple he had photographed

1:01:10

there having sex just made me sit.

1:01:13

I think whites marry with whites, blacks with blacks.

1:01:16

I threw the magazine down and thought I'm going to kill that guy. I

1:01:19

did some research to track down those photos. Thank

1:01:22

you, random internet perverts for uploading them. Hail to

1:01:24

Safina. Spready's, it's

1:01:26

fucking crazy. You can look up any

1:01:28

old like porn magazine and if

1:01:31

you do enough specific searching, you'll find the photos.

1:01:33

The Spready's talking about this picture of a black

1:01:35

man named Butch Williams who

1:01:38

had a 14 inch

1:01:41

dick, a 14 inch third leg pretending to be

1:01:43

a penis and a

1:01:45

petite white woman only identified as Peaches,

1:01:47

assuming that's not a birthday. The

1:01:49

pictorial was titled A Black Stud in his Georgia

1:01:51

Peach and much tamer

1:01:54

than today's porn by the way. And

1:01:56

any pic where you can see Butch's massive dick, it

1:01:58

is limp. There are picks where it

1:02:01

looks like they might be having sex, but

1:02:03

also just could be faking it, no penetration shots.

1:02:06

The raciest pick is one where Butch is going down

1:02:08

on peaches and squeezing her breasts. And he

1:02:10

might just have his face down there. You don't even know if he's doing anything.

1:02:13

I wonder, was Jimmy Joe really mad

1:02:15

about the interracial sex, or

1:02:17

was he mad that this beautiful young white woman

1:02:19

seemed to really be enjoying the presence of Butch's

1:02:22

14-inch monster cock? Guessing

1:02:24

that Jimmy Joe was packing a little

1:02:26

bit less than that. Maybe like

1:02:28

12 or 13 inches less. He

1:02:31

does not come across ever as a dude with a lot

1:02:33

of big dick energy. Investigators

1:02:35

later found 44 Magnum shells, not condoms, at

1:02:38

the crime scene. Jimmy Joe had used

1:02:40

a .44 caliber semi-automatic rifle. Larry

1:02:42

and Jean would have no idea who had done this to them for the

1:02:44

next six years. Danny Porter,

1:02:46

Gwinnett County District Attorney, said that several years

1:02:49

after Larry Flint's shooting, they received a letter

1:02:51

from Joseph Paul Franklin from Marion, Illinois, where

1:02:53

he was already incarcerated. It

1:02:55

read, My name is Joseph Paul Franklin. I

1:02:57

shot Larry Flint. If you bring me

1:02:59

to Gwinnett County, I'll tell you about it. He

1:03:02

just wanted to fucking get out of prison for a little bit. Initially,

1:03:04

Joseph told the police that the letter was just a hoax, but

1:03:07

he eventually cooperated and the Georgia police believed he was telling

1:03:09

the truth after some interviews. Joe

1:03:11

was able to describe the abandoned building he shot from,

1:03:13

his escape route, the vehicle, and where he drove. He

1:03:16

was indicted in 1984, but they didn't pursue a trial, because again,

1:03:18

they had enough other stuff on him. Porter

1:03:21

told the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, we're sort of

1:03:23

at the end of the line because he's facing murder in

1:03:25

every jurisdiction but ours. If you

1:03:27

give him 20 years max, I'm not sure that would

1:03:29

be a good use of the taxpayers' money. And I'm

1:03:32

not in a hurry to bring Larry Flint and the

1:03:34

rolling circus he brings with him back for trial. Oh,

1:03:37

not Larry Flint and his circus. He'll

1:03:40

bring women who have shown their bodies for

1:03:42

money. Oh dear. What

1:03:45

might that do to the moral fabric of

1:03:47

the air? Mother, sisters, daughters might rip off

1:03:49

their clothes and run through the streets. They

1:03:52

might have sex with black men. We're

1:03:56

moving on to Jimmy Joe's next nonsensical attack. Time

1:03:59

for the second of our time. to mid-show sponsor breaks. If

1:07:40

I'm back. We

1:07:44

return to the summer of 1978 for Jimmy's next

1:07:46

shooting. And this time two people will

1:07:48

die. Almost

1:07:51

five months after his attack on Larry Flint and his lawyer. On

1:07:54

July 29, 1978 in a Pizza Hut

1:07:56

parking lot in Chattanooga, Tennessee, Joseph Franklin

1:07:58

now shoots 20-year-old Bryant Tatum. Black

1:08:00

student at the University of Chattanooga and

1:08:02

18 year old Nancy Hilton a white woman who worked

1:08:04

a pizza hut the two were dating Bryant

1:08:07

was killed, but Nancy would survive Joseph

1:08:10

shot Brian and Nancy from a patch of tall grass near

1:08:12

the parking lot and he would not admit to those

1:08:14

killings for almost 20 years not until 1995

1:08:17

Brian answer leaving the pizza parlor shot if they were getting

1:08:20

into Brian's car Tim Carroll

1:08:22

the original investigators in 1978 Chattanooga shooting

1:08:25

Told local 3 news that he received a phone call from

1:08:27

Joseph Franklin in 1995 I asked

1:08:30

him I said so okay your call why now

1:08:32

he said I want to have the most death penalty

1:08:34

cases pending against anybody That's currently in custody. He

1:08:37

said I've killed several people What

1:08:39

a weird pathetic thing to want how sad

1:08:42

is your life? That's what you want. That's

1:08:44

some strange death row bragging rights. Oh You

1:08:48

have a death sentence so what motherfucker?

1:08:50

I should be on death row

1:08:52

in six states right now six If

1:08:55

the governor here commutes my sense Well

1:08:58

take me to a different death row you lucky son of

1:09:00

a bitch good thing you're not as evil and

1:09:02

tough as me You know candy ass death

1:09:04

row. Oh you really have something to worry about

1:09:06

if you had six not just one Like

1:09:09

a fucking little bitch death row sentence Carol

1:09:11

drove to st. Louis talked to Joseph about the

1:09:14

murders Jimmy Joe told

1:09:16

him that his purpose in coming to Chattanooga was to find

1:09:18

interracial couples And he first spotted

1:09:20

Brian Tatum and Nancy Hilton leaving the movies

1:09:22

together holding hands kissing looking in love not

1:09:24

do anything wrong How dare they? Fall

1:09:27

down to Pete's that parked his car on the road left the hood up

1:09:29

to make it seem like the car was broken down Then

1:09:31

hid in the grass behind his car shot at a

1:09:33

couple as he left He bragged in 1995

1:09:35

confession saying with pride I hit him square

1:09:37

in the chest The

1:09:40

spring of 1979 Joseph takes a break from

1:09:42

killing and he gets married again Oh,

1:09:45

yeah, then 29 year old

1:09:47

marries Anita Carden Cooper who

1:09:50

was just 16 years old I would like

1:09:52

it what a lucky lady or lucky kid Jimmy

1:09:54

Joe like a lot of almost 30 year olds

1:09:57

trying to fuck a kid met Anita at an

1:09:59

ice cream parlor This one was

1:10:01

in Montgomery, Alabama. Dairy Delight. And,

1:10:04

naturally, it was white-owned ice cream

1:10:07

parter that only served vanilla ice

1:10:09

cream! No French

1:10:11

vanilla! Frog shit! Neither! Oh,

1:10:13

fuck no! No, this is real

1:10:15

pure, Aryan vanilla ice cream made

1:10:17

from white, master-race milk.

1:10:20

It comes from an all-white

1:10:22

Aryan cow. No brown spots, motherfucker!

1:10:24

Milk by a white farm hand

1:10:27

whose pure Aryan ancestry can be

1:10:29

traced back to medieval Germany. Churned

1:10:31

into cream, white cream, by another

1:10:33

white of equal pedigree. Frozen in

1:10:35

an all-white, not cream-colored freezer, stored

1:10:38

in an all-white container, driven to the ice cream

1:10:40

shop, in an all-white truck driven by an Aryan

1:10:42

man in a pure, untainted white milkman's outfit. It

1:10:45

wasn't even called Vanilla Ice Cream, it was called White is

1:10:47

Right! How Hitler Cream! I

1:10:50

have no fucking idea what kind of ice cream they served. Anita's

1:10:52

brother, Don, later told the Birmingham Post Herald that

1:10:55

when things were good, Joseph was generous. He

1:10:58

bought Anita a stereo, bought Don a motorcycle,

1:11:00

but then also just up and left with no explanation after

1:11:03

several months. Probably took her

1:11:05

that long to figure out that the name

1:11:07

Anita is of

1:11:09

Spanish origin. It means

1:11:11

grace or unguided. What

1:11:14

it doesn't mean is white power. You probably

1:11:16

figured out who the fuck she really was, how she

1:11:18

tricked him when she made like tacos or something

1:11:20

for dinner one night. Oh, tacos, huh? Okay, all

1:11:22

right. How fucked do you know how

1:11:25

to make tacos, Anita? And then she'd probably

1:11:27

be like, I don't know, I just make them like

1:11:29

my mama taught me. And then he felt sick, he

1:11:31

felt dizzy, and he flashed on being in her mama's

1:11:34

house, and it all came together. And he saw a

1:11:36

picture on the wall of her great-grandpa, a man with

1:11:38

a thick, dark mustache and pretty tan skin. Almost

1:11:41

like a Spanish level of tan, maybe

1:11:43

Argentinian, maybe Chilean, perhaps Mexican.

1:11:47

He shuddered. Then he remembered over here Anita talked

1:11:49

about how she'd like to learn how to salsa

1:11:51

dance someday. And how she loved to

1:11:53

watch I Love Lucy with her mom. And who is

1:11:55

Lucy Mary doing on that show? Fucking Ricky Ricardo! Desi

1:11:58

or not. Fucking Cuba. One

1:12:00

of those island Mexicans destroying the purity of

1:12:03

the mass of race by fucking white women.

1:12:05

And he just screamed, Oh my God! Why

1:12:08

would you take me like this? And he ran

1:12:10

into the bathroom and started vomiting. He threw up

1:12:12

and he brushed his teeth and tongue and he

1:12:14

washed his mouth out. Thinking about the times he

1:12:16

kissed her Spanish lips, both sets. And he scrubbed

1:12:19

his wing clean, throwing up again. Thinking about how

1:12:21

it had been inserted over and over into her

1:12:23

very clean, warm, tight, moist Spanish vagina. And

1:12:25

he smelled so good. And then he scrubbed his butthole.

1:12:28

Thinking about how many times she had pegged him

1:12:30

with her giant ribbed Spanish dildo with no lube

1:12:32

as he had demanded. And then he came hard

1:12:34

thinking about that which made him throw up again

1:12:36

and he hated himself for how much he liked

1:12:38

it. And then he jumped on the motorcycle. He

1:12:40

gave to her not white Spanish brother after he

1:12:43

thoroughly disinfected it. And then he

1:12:45

rode off into the night like a strong white knight

1:12:47

he was in his fucking karate gi, never

1:12:49

to return. This will be his

1:12:51

last long term romantic relationship. At

1:12:54

least during the not incarcerated period of his life. I think

1:12:56

the last one period. No mention

1:12:58

of him getting busy with any ladies while

1:13:00

in prison. Any conjugal

1:13:02

visits. After he left, Anita

1:13:04

Bonita. Whoo! Embacador

1:13:06

Mejicano! If you can believe Jimmy Joe. He

1:13:10

had many relationships with different women. Like short

1:13:12

ones. Sexual ones. I doubted that when I

1:13:15

first read it. There's later photos.

1:13:17

Oof. Do they not scream ladies, man?

1:13:21

They scream fucking crazy weirdo out in

1:13:23

the cabin who all women are afraid of. I

1:13:26

thought he looked about as handsome as Richard Byrd.

1:13:28

If you recall that ugly devilish

1:13:30

bastard. But young Jimmy Joe, while I hate

1:13:32

to say it, was actually a somewhat handsome guy. Who

1:13:35

didn't look like he just crawled out of a meth lab

1:13:37

almost before it exploded. During

1:13:39

his murder spree he got into bodybuilding. He was eating really well.

1:13:42

No longer really skinny. He was fairly muscle bound. Also

1:13:44

the girls he was dating like his wife were

1:13:46

teenagers. So different standards. He

1:13:49

preferred teens which speaks a lot to his

1:13:51

lack of psychological development. Jimmy

1:13:54

Joe, again according to Jimmy Joe, changed

1:13:56

identities as fast as he changed women. Aw,

1:13:59

he's a fucking stud. He moved around

1:14:01

the south, Midwest, usually 17 different aliases,

1:14:03

dyed his hair, so much started falling out. Young

1:14:05

Anita never knew much about her husband, according to an

1:14:07

interview, featured again in a big article about Joseph Franklin

1:14:10

in People Magazine in November of 1980. Anita

1:14:13

thought she was married to a guy named James Cooper,

1:14:15

a plumber. She said Joseph told

1:14:17

her he was responsible for 12 murders before bank

1:14:19

robberies, though. Okay, that's why – that's a hell

1:14:22

of a plumber. What a catch. July

1:14:24

12, 1979, 27-year-old Harold

1:14:26

McIver, a black Taco Bell manager in

1:14:28

Doreville, Georgia, northeast suburb of Atlanta,

1:14:31

is fatally shot through a window at Taco

1:14:33

Bell by a somebody 150 yards away. It

1:14:36

was another killing Jimmy Joe would not confess to for over

1:14:38

20 years. He confessed to this murder in 1998.

1:14:40

He was indicted, not tried. He would

1:14:43

say that he killed Harold because Harold was, quote,

1:14:45

in close contact with white women, and

1:14:48

he believed he was probably hitting on them. Jimmy

1:14:50

Joe didn't even want black and whites to make chalupas,

1:14:53

gorditas, Mexican pizzas together. Also,

1:14:56

anyone else surprised to hear that there was a Taco Bell in

1:14:58

1979? I thought there were more reasons than that. Yeah,

1:15:01

they opened their first store in 1962 down

1:15:03

in California. I might have covered that a long time ago,

1:15:05

but I forget. Just two years

1:15:07

later, 1964, they were already opening more franchises.

1:15:10

By the time they went public in 1970, they had about –

1:15:13

not about, they had exactly – 325 locations. Their

1:15:18

growth almost as explosive as a diarrhea, but

1:15:20

often directly follows eating their delicious food. Back

1:15:23

to Harold, that poor bastard got gunned down while working at Taco Bell

1:15:26

on a day he wasn't supposed to be there. It was a day

1:15:28

off. But he came into fixing

1:15:30

the issue with the cash register, and he got shot

1:15:32

because he left the store. Five

1:15:34

weeks later, August 18, 1979,

1:15:37

Joseph kills again, 28-year-old Raymond Elton Turner, a black

1:15:39

man, the night manager at Burger King. It's

1:15:42

really fucking going after the fast food people. And

1:15:44

Falls Church, Virginia, suburb of Washington, D.C. Man,

1:15:47

shooting unarmed people at Taco Bell Burger

1:15:50

King Pizza Hut. What a brave revolutionary.

1:15:53

Joseph again won't confess this killing until about two decades

1:15:55

later. February of 1997,

1:15:58

Joseph Franklin will be interviewed for Inside Edition. And that's

1:16:01

when he'll admit to shooting Raymond. Turner

1:16:03

was sitting at a table near an exit. Bullet

1:16:05

went through the window, hit him in the chest. The police

1:16:07

speculated the shooter was about 15 yards away. Excuse

1:16:10

me, Joseph called the murderer a lucky shot. He

1:16:13

gave no motive, just told reporter Janet tomorrow.

1:16:16

They've named me as a suspect, but I've never confessed to

1:16:18

it. So you're the first reporter I've confessed

1:16:20

to. Janet was

1:16:22

at the time an attractive 35-year-old television

1:16:24

journalist, and her looks matter here. After

1:16:27

his arrest, detectives will learn that if they really wanted

1:16:30

to get Jimmy Joe to admit to something, their

1:16:32

best chance by far was to send in a pretty girl. A

1:16:35

pretty white girl. He loved getting attention

1:16:37

from attractive white women. A

1:16:39

week after he guns down the innocent manager of

1:16:41

Burger King, just reading black, Anita

1:16:44

gives birth to her and Joseph's daughter, Lori. Unclear

1:16:46

if he and Anita are still together at this point. By

1:16:49

the following fall, they'll have definitely separated. Two

1:16:52

months later, October 21, 1979,

1:16:54

Joseph shoots and kills 42-year-old Jesse Eugene

1:16:57

Taylor, a black man, and 31-year-old Marion

1:16:59

Vera Brissett, a white woman in

1:17:01

a grocery store parking lot in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma. They

1:17:04

were boyfriend and girlfriend. Jesse was shot three times.

1:17:06

Marion was shot once. Joseph killed them

1:17:08

because they were an interracial couple. They

1:17:10

lived together, worked at the same nursing home. They'd stopped

1:17:13

at the grocery store to buy apples. After

1:17:15

coming back from a fucking hula hoop contest at

1:17:17

a park, could they be more

1:17:19

wholesome? Marion's three kids waded in

1:17:21

the car while she and Jesse went inside. Jimmy

1:17:24

Joe hid behind a row of trees 75 to 100 yards away. Didn't

1:17:26

give a shit that the kids were there. Jesse

1:17:29

was shot three times. After he walked back to the car,

1:17:31

Marion shot once as she ran to help him. Most

1:17:33

witnesses thought the gunshots were a car backfiring.

1:17:36

One store employee said he heard Jesse say, Oh

1:17:39

my God, after he was shot the first time.

1:17:42

Richard Brissett, got to

1:17:44

get at least one dick in here, Marion's

1:17:46

son, who was just 10 at the time,

1:17:48

later told a reporter for the Oklahoman, we

1:17:50

was yelling at my mom, get down, get down, get

1:17:52

down. Even though we were little kids, we knew

1:17:54

what was going on. He

1:17:57

also said they didn't see their mother get shot because

1:17:59

Jesse's blood. covered the window. Man,

1:18:02

what a horrible life moment. One

1:18:04

I imagine would flow back up in your mind over and over,

1:18:06

probably when you at least wanted to for the rest of your

1:18:08

life. The children were

1:18:11

unsurprisingly extremely traumatized by this

1:18:13

shooting. Further victims that Jimmy

1:18:15

Joe never got properly punished for hurting. Marion's

1:18:18

daughter, Candy Moreno, said that she

1:18:20

became addicted to drugs at the age of 12 and

1:18:22

that even though she was white, she hated white people for a

1:18:24

long period of time. Richard

1:18:27

went on to attempt suicide. Marion's

1:18:29

younger child, Doug Brissett, did either take his

1:18:31

own life or died of a drug-related accident.

1:18:34

He was found with a bag over his head in 1995, probably

1:18:36

put on to help him get high sniffing some glue or

1:18:38

freon. Joseph

1:18:41

left behind the casings of a high caliber rifle and a grove of a tree

1:18:43

75 yards away. A family would have to wait

1:18:45

years to know who did it. In

1:18:48

1991, Joseph would be charged with two counts of

1:18:50

first-degree murder in Oklahoma. After his cellmate told police

1:18:52

he confessed to shooting a

1:18:55

white woman with a black man in a parking

1:18:57

lot in Oklahoma. But then the case was dropped in

1:18:59

1983 after prosecutors learned a key

1:19:01

witness was paid a $15,000

1:19:03

reward for his cooperation. So Jimmy Joe

1:19:05

got away with that one. Seven

1:19:07

weeks later, December 5, 1979,

1:19:09

Joseph shoots and kills one of

1:19:11

his white teenage lovers, 15-year-old Mercedes

1:19:14

Masters in DeKalb County, Georgia. Unlike

1:19:17

the other victims, she was shot at close range. Her

1:19:19

body was found on December 25, Christmas Day, near

1:19:21

Lathonia, Georgia, a little town on the edge of

1:19:23

the eastern edge of the Atlanta suburbs. She was

1:19:25

found in the backyard of an abandoned house by some prospective

1:19:28

land buyers and shot in the back of the head execution

1:19:30

style. Franklin later confessed

1:19:32

that he spent several days with Mercedes after picking

1:19:34

her up while she was hitchhiking, romancing

1:19:37

it up, then decided

1:19:39

to kill her after he learned that she'd had sex with

1:19:41

black men. Probably couldn't stop

1:19:43

thinking about that hustler spread with Butch and

1:19:45

Peaches and Butch's 14-inch meat sort. This

1:19:48

was another murder that took nearly 20 years to solve.

1:19:51

Joseph admitted to the murder to an assistant district

1:19:54

attorney, March 26, 1998. He

1:19:56

was indicted for that murder but never tried, like I

1:19:58

mentioned, with another murder. already had enough on him at

1:20:00

that point to keep him off the streets forever. The

1:20:03

beaten boy becomes the killer. So calm with

1:20:05

these fucks. The victim becomes the worst

1:20:07

victimizer that anyone who had ever harmed him. Found

1:20:10

out some young girl was dating a black

1:20:12

man at one point and killed her for

1:20:14

that 15 year old. Months

1:20:18

later around 11pm January 12 1980

1:20:20

Joseph now fatally shoots 23 year old Larry

1:20:22

Reese, Lawrence E. Reese, young black

1:20:24

man who was standing in line inside a

1:20:27

church's fried chicken in Indianapolis waiting

1:20:29

for a late dinner. Larry was

1:20:31

shot once in the back from an estimated distance of

1:20:33

150 yards pronounced dead hours later at

1:20:35

the Methodist Hospital. Charges will

1:20:37

be filed in this case the following year but

1:20:39

no long wait with that one. Just

1:20:42

48 years, 48 years, just 48 years

1:20:44

later, just 48 hours later 19 year

1:20:47

old Leo Thomas Watkins, young black man, a

1:20:49

teenager, a kid, was

1:20:51

killed on January 14 1980

1:20:53

Leo working as a pest exterminator with his dad and the two

1:20:55

had been called in for a job at the quick pick market

1:20:57

grocery store inside an Indianapolis

1:20:59

mall. Leo and Larry, previous victim,

1:21:01

did not know each other, didn't have any known

1:21:04

enemies. Police initially were looking for a connection. Police

1:21:07

now worried this knife was an unbalanced person shooting

1:21:09

at random. Bingo! Asterix.

1:21:12

Shooting at random people of specific races

1:21:15

or people who had sexual relationships with people of

1:21:17

the non-white variety. Leo

1:21:19

was with his dad Tom that day, a single gunshot,

1:21:22

shattered the store window and his son, you

1:21:24

know hit his son, Tom would later say, I just

1:21:26

stood there and watched my boy die. Holy

1:21:29

fuck that would haunt you forever.

1:21:32

Shot came from a clump of trees about 100 yards away

1:21:34

Leo shot with a 30 caliber rifle, same

1:21:37

kind that killed Larry Reese. Nearly

1:21:39

four months later May 3rd 1980 the dead body

1:21:41

of a young white woman 20 year old Rebecca

1:21:43

Bergstrom found in Mill Bluff State

1:21:45

Park near Camp Douglas out in the middle of

1:21:47

nowhere rural central Wisconsin, far from Georgia,

1:21:50

far from Indianapolis. She even shot twice in

1:21:52

the back, once in the back of the head. Two

1:21:55

teenagers found her bodies of a hiking trail, the coroner

1:21:57

who examined her remains Gary She

1:22:00

could have been dead for up to two days. Spent shells

1:22:02

were found at the scene, and the sheriff said Rebecca

1:22:04

was apparently shot by a handgun. Evidence

1:22:06

indicated she was shot by someone she knew or someone she had

1:22:08

hitched a ride with. Rebecca

1:22:10

was the daughter of two hog farmers attending vocational

1:22:12

school in Madison and working full time. Her

1:22:15

passport was found in her body, which made it very easy to

1:22:17

identify her. Rebecca was supposed to pick up her car, head home

1:22:19

to spend the summer working on the farm and at a nearby

1:22:21

bank. Joseph confessed to the

1:22:23

Bergstrom murder three years later in 1984. Said

1:22:26

he picked her up while she was hitchhiking. Said

1:22:28

he killed Rebecca because she told him she had dated

1:22:30

a Jamaican man while she was on spring break a

1:22:33

few weeks earlier. Jimmy Joe hated

1:22:35

it when black men dated young

1:22:37

attractive white women. Never killed any

1:22:39

black women. It's for dating white men. Was

1:22:42

this really about a race war or did some

1:22:44

black guy take his girlfriend at some point when he was

1:22:46

living in one of those recently integrated housing projects? Did

1:22:49

they date several girls that he longed for who were not

1:22:51

interested in him? Is that the real reason

1:22:53

he was so furious? Did he actually have a really tiny dick? Was

1:22:56

he still painfully insecure? He just

1:22:58

couldn't get past the thought of a black man having sex with a woman. He

1:23:01

was sexually interested in pleasing her more than he ever

1:23:03

could. Less

1:23:05

than a month later, he's back in Indiana. May

1:23:07

29th, 1980, Joseph shot at civil

1:23:09

rights activists, then president of the

1:23:11

National Urban League, Vernon Jordan Jr.,

1:23:14

a black man after he saw him with a white woman in Fort

1:23:16

Wayne, Indiana. National

1:23:19

Urban League, formerly known as the National League

1:23:21

on Urban Conditions amongst Negroes is a nonpartisan

1:23:23

historic civil rights organization based in New York

1:23:26

City that advocates on behalf

1:23:28

of economic and social justice for African Americans

1:23:30

and against racial discrimination in the US. This

1:23:32

is the oldest and largest community based organization

1:23:34

of its kind in America. 44

1:23:37

year old Vernon Jordan was shot in the back at 2

1:23:39

a.m. as he got out of a car in the parking

1:23:41

lot of the Fort Wayne Marriott Inn. Vernon

1:23:44

Jordan was in Fort Wayne for an Urban League speech. President

1:23:47

Jimmy Carter said he believed Jordan was a

1:23:49

target of an assassination attempt. FBI

1:23:51

director William Webster said that agents

1:23:53

believed Jordan was a target of a conspiracy

1:23:55

and the shooting was the work of apparently

1:23:57

more than one person in a premeditated act.

1:24:01

Martha Coleman, the white woman he was with when he was

1:24:03

shot, was an urban league volunteer who took

1:24:05

Jordan back to the hotel after she had – the two

1:24:07

had went out to get a snack. Jimmy

1:24:09

Joe never suspected this crime at the time. Law enforcement still

1:24:12

didn't have a clue who the dude was, and

1:24:14

he was helped by a car full of other assholes

1:24:17

that night who shouted racial slurs at Vernon as he was dropped

1:24:19

off at the hotel. Little Garretys also

1:24:21

hurled at Martha regarding her being a white woman

1:24:23

with a black man. Fort

1:24:25

Wayne, racist as fuck apparently,

1:24:28

back in 1980. At

1:24:30

11.30 pm, June 8, 1980, cousins,

1:24:33

a couple kids, 14-year-old Darryl Lane,

1:24:35

13-year-old Dontae Evans Brown, walking

1:24:38

to a convenience store in Bond Hill, Cincinnati to get

1:24:40

some candy. Both shot with

1:24:42

a .44 caliber rifle by a sniper perched

1:24:44

on a nearby railroad trestle. Boys

1:24:47

were walking down Reed Road to buy again some candy.

1:24:49

Joseph Frank was, of course, a sniper hiding on the

1:24:51

top of that train trestle. Said

1:24:54

he planned to shoot the first black man he saw with a white woman, and

1:24:56

then he literally just got bored. Got tired

1:24:58

of waiting for an interracial couple to show up. Just thought,

1:25:00

I don't know, fuck it. Why not kill some kids instead?

1:25:03

He would later say he didn't realize Dontae and Darryl were kids.

1:25:05

Bullshit. He sure

1:25:07

as shit did not seem remorseful when he said it. Darryl

1:25:09

died right there in the street. His

1:25:12

sister heard the shots, would testify that she ran

1:25:14

down the street, saw him being put into an

1:25:16

ambulance. Dontae will die three days later after fighting

1:25:18

for his life and briefly regaining consciousness in the

1:25:20

hospital. Dontae's mother, Abby, got the

1:25:22

call that her son had been shot and was in the hospital when

1:25:24

she was at a graduation party. Decades

1:25:28

later in 2013, she'll say, they

1:25:31

were working on him when I got there. I thought, who would

1:25:33

do this to him? They said he was in bad

1:25:35

shape and I fell in the hallway. Days

1:25:37

later, Darryl's funeral, she got another call to get to the hospital

1:25:39

if you want to see your son alive again. She

1:25:42

said, I went in and seen all these tubes. He was trying to

1:25:44

say something. I just put my finger to my mouth. It's

1:25:48

devastating. It's a void. You never get over it. So

1:25:50

much unnecessary pain caused by a dude who

1:25:52

knew what it was like

1:25:54

to feel so much unnecessary pain. Carolyn

1:25:57

Brown, the boy's grandmother, Told

1:26:00

a Cincinnati Post about how she found one of the boys on the

1:26:02

street. She said, I heard some shots and I grabbed my shoes and

1:26:04

ran. When I got there, he was lying on the street. Darryl

1:26:07

had been shot in the heart, Dante had been shot three

1:26:09

times. Chest, stomach, and knee. Police

1:26:11

couldn't find the exact spot where the sniper hit

1:26:13

initially but theorized. He could have shot from

1:26:15

a railroad trestle above Reading Road, 50 feet from the boys.

1:26:18

Darryl lived with his grandma, Carolyn Brown. Carolyn said they were

1:26:20

watching TV at home. Darryl and his cousin Dante said they

1:26:22

wanted to go out of the store, about two blocks away.

1:26:25

She told him to hurry cuz it was late. A

1:26:27

couple minutes later, she heard gunshots. Cincinnati

1:26:30

police would start to suspect Joseph Franklin finally

1:26:32

within a few months of the shootings, but

1:26:34

initially they were clueless. There were

1:26:36

no witnesses and Franklin had sold the rifle.

1:26:38

Rifle that couldn't be found despite newspaper ads

1:26:41

offering a reward. While law

1:26:43

enforcement and victims' families struggle with more

1:26:45

inexplicable killings, Joseph Paul Franklin killed again.

1:26:48

I said a few months, about almost a year later

1:26:50

when they started to suspect Joseph for

1:26:53

those killings. Just

1:26:55

a week after killing two children on June 5th, 1980, Joseph

1:26:57

fatally shot 22-year-old Arthur Dale Smothers,

1:27:00

a black man, and 16-year-old Kathleen

1:27:02

Mikula, his white girlfriend, another interracial

1:27:04

couple. Shot them from a wooded

1:27:06

area near a railroad overpass. Arthur

1:27:08

and Kathleen were walking across the bridge

1:27:10

into downtown Johnstown, Pennsylvania,

1:27:13

little over an hour east of Pittsburgh,

1:27:15

and they were hit by five bullets. Kathy

1:27:17

died within three hours of surgery. Arthur lived two more

1:27:19

hours. Civic leaders worked to

1:27:22

avert the flood of anger that they feared might

1:27:24

lead to more killing. Few people

1:27:26

believed the police's statements that the murders were

1:27:28

not necessarily racially motivated. For

1:27:30

the most part, people in town accepted this

1:27:32

couple's relationship. But a few weeks

1:27:34

earlier, they had been accosted by a group of

1:27:36

white people. And six weeks earlier, Arthur was assaulted

1:27:38

by two white men with a fucking stick. Someone

1:27:42

had also slashed Arthur's tires and put sugar in

1:27:44

his gas tank. All

1:27:46

that, just for interracial dating. And not in

1:27:48

1950 or 1910 or 1860. The

1:27:52

shit went down in 1980. Arthur

1:27:54

and Kathy had taken just a few steps onto the bridge.

1:27:57

Arthur shot in the back, bullet went through his chest, also

1:27:59

hitting the groin. right ankle, exactly hitting

1:28:01

the right side in the back. Unfortunately,

1:28:03

a thunderstorm passing through the area just following them being

1:28:05

shot washed away a lot of the evidence, but police

1:28:07

still found four 35 caliber cartridges

1:28:09

and two words written in some nearby dirt,

1:28:12

white trash. So witnesses

1:28:14

also reported seeing a car driving up a seldom used

1:28:17

steep and rutted road that winds up the hillside from

1:28:19

the street before the shootings. Joseph

1:28:21

was driving a dark green Chevy Nova at that

1:28:23

time. Other witnesses saw a similar looking

1:28:25

car, you know, driving from this road

1:28:27

after the shootings. Police also found

1:28:30

fingerprints on a fast food cup near the

1:28:32

sniper spot. Larry McCoolah, Kathleen's

1:28:34

brother said that they were never told if the prints

1:28:36

belong to Franklin or not. He was in

1:28:38

the area that day to rob a bank. Despite

1:28:40

this evidence, Joseph would not confess to the

1:28:42

smothers and McCoolah murders for almost 20 years,

1:28:44

not until 1998. Although there was

1:28:46

some evidence against him like fit in the profile, there was

1:28:48

never enough to make an arrest. The confession

1:28:51

was obtained by Cambria County, ADA,

1:28:53

Kelly Callahan and Johnstown detective Janine

1:28:55

Guido's in Tennessee to attractive

1:28:57

white women. His

1:28:59

favorite people, the kind of people Jimmy Joe enjoyed confessing to

1:29:01

the most. Callahan

1:29:04

later said about the interview, it was eerie. I don't

1:29:06

think I'll ever experience that again. It was literally

1:29:08

like you could get into the mind of a serial killer. Cambria

1:29:11

County chose not to prosecute him for the murders because

1:29:14

like I mentioned before, the risk of moving him was

1:29:16

too high and he already had a death sentence against

1:29:18

him according to Callahan. By

1:29:20

the summer of 1980, Franklin was killing more frequently

1:29:22

than ever. And on June 25th, a mere

1:29:24

10 days following his previous murders, he

1:29:27

now kills two more white women, 19 year

1:29:29

old Nancy Santamero and 26 year

1:29:31

old Vicki Durian in Pocahontas County,

1:29:33

West Virginia. The two

1:29:35

girls were out hitchhiking on the way to something called

1:29:37

a rainbow gathering. Their unsolved murders

1:29:39

would become known as the rainbow murders. The

1:29:42

women had left their Iowa City home heading for a

1:29:44

rainbow gathering of the rainbow family in

1:29:47

Menonga, Menonga, Hala National Forest, West

1:29:49

Virginia. And what

1:29:51

the hell is the rainbow family you might be wondering,

1:29:53

per the website for a 2022 gathering in Colorado. Some

1:29:57

say we're the largest non organization of non members in

1:29:59

the world. We have no leaders and

1:30:01

no ordination. To be honest, the rainbow family means

1:30:03

different things to different people. Many

1:30:06

of our traditions are based on Native American traditions and we have

1:30:08

a strong orientation to take care of the earth. We

1:30:11

gather in the national forest yearly to pray

1:30:13

for peace, celebrate our interdependence

1:30:16

and share food, knowledge, music and inspiration.

1:30:19

Probably quite a bit of drugs. We

1:30:21

gather to celebrate life, love, freedom and our

1:30:23

own interconnectedness with the spiritual universe, with

1:30:25

the national environment and with each other. So

1:30:28

many of us are capable of surviving everywhere on our own.

1:30:30

We come together to celebrate the joy that

1:30:33

comes from being with others and sharing love,

1:30:35

wisdom, ideas, dance, yoga, theater, acoustic

1:30:37

music and drumming, probably a fucking ton of

1:30:39

drugs, all without electricity and usually in a

1:30:41

remote national forest where our cell phones don't

1:30:43

get any signal freeing us to actually be

1:30:45

here now with ourselves, our friends and new,

1:30:47

interesting people we may only chat or dance

1:30:49

with for a moment or

1:30:51

who may become lifelong friends. Okay,

1:30:54

yeah, I'd probably go. These gatherings began back in 1972. They

1:30:57

used to hold something where I grew up in Rigans, Idaho. Pop

1:31:01

Ward hated them. He thought there were

1:31:03

a bunch of dirty hippies who

1:31:05

gathered in the woods, mostly to do drugs and have sex and he

1:31:07

was not wrong. But that sounds like a lot

1:31:09

of fun. They've also sadly become notorious

1:31:11

for leaving a bunch of trash all over the forest

1:31:14

when they leave, even though they're supposed to be there

1:31:16

to celebrate the earth. The group's

1:31:18

original idea or ideal has

1:31:20

become hijacked, it seems, by a lot of people just want to

1:31:22

fuck around and get high and people who care

1:31:24

less about community or the environment. It reminds me

1:31:27

of Burning Man. Joseph will

1:31:29

later in 1984 confess this crime during the investigation of

1:31:31

another case. He said he picked them

1:31:33

up because they were attractive but then killed them after

1:31:35

one of the girls said she had a black boyfriend.

1:31:39

Yep, that tracks. A local

1:31:41

West Virginia man named Jacob Beard will be falsely

1:31:43

convicted of these murders. Despite Franklin's confession in June

1:31:45

of 1993, in 1999, the trial judge will review

1:31:47

Joseph Franklin's

1:31:49

confessions and order a new trial. And

1:31:51

then on May 31st 2000, Jacob Beard will be found

1:31:53

not guilty of the murders. And

1:31:55

then we'll get a $2 million settlement in

1:31:57

a wrongful conviction suit. I

1:31:59

bet he would. trade it, give that money back to get

1:32:01

seven years of his life back. Less

1:32:04

than a month later, Jimmy Joe kills again. Again,

1:32:06

he kills a pair of victims. August

1:32:09

20th, 1980, 10 days after

1:32:11

arriving in Salt Lake City, Utah. Joseph

1:32:13

killed 20-year-old Ted Fields and 18-year-old

1:32:16

David Martin. The two young black

1:32:18

men had been out jogging at Liberty Park just outside

1:32:20

of downtown Salt Lake City, beautiful park

1:32:22

actually, with two young white women. And

1:32:24

they were leaving the park or as they were leaving

1:32:26

the park, seven shots rang out and the

1:32:28

men were hit multiple times from roughly

1:32:30

four yards away. Joseph's car

1:32:32

at this time, a 1975 Chevy Camaro with a

1:32:35

Kentucky license plate was seen leaving the scene. Joseph

1:32:38

shot and somebody dig his license plate. Thank God. Joseph

1:32:40

shot at Ted and David from Tall weeds in a

1:32:42

vacant lot. He had seen them jogging with two white

1:32:44

girls in a park. He said, I intended

1:32:46

to shoot an interracial couple coming out of a

1:32:48

convenience store. Then I saw two interracial couples

1:32:51

jogging through Liberty Park. I swung the

1:32:53

rifle around real quick to my left. I was

1:32:55

able to get a shot off real quick and drop one of the blocks. My

1:32:58

God. Frank said he was shot. Then

1:33:00

instead of running away, the group now grabbed the man's

1:33:02

arms, tried to pull him away. How crazy. They

1:33:04

were trying to save their friend's life. He said,

1:33:06

I couldn't understand that. You know, in

1:33:09

a way I get it. I highly doubt Jimmy Joe ever

1:33:11

had anyone who did that for him. He

1:33:13

then shot the second black man saying, I then emptied the gun

1:33:15

into both guys while they were lying there. I figured I should

1:33:17

complete the job. God, this guy is such a

1:33:19

piece of shit. One of the girls who was

1:33:21

there, Terry Mitchell, was left with a scar from a bullet that

1:33:23

went through one of the men ricocheted off the pavement. She'll

1:33:26

later say that she forgave Franklin, but still wanted him

1:33:28

to be executed to put him out of

1:33:30

his lifetime of suffering. 10 days

1:33:33

before he was finally was executed, she

1:33:35

sent him two books about spiritual healing

1:33:37

and forgiveness and agreed to talk to him over

1:33:39

the phone. Mitchell said, he said he

1:33:42

was glad he didn't kill me. He said

1:33:44

he was sorry for the incident. The

1:33:46

incident is what he called what he did. Joseph

1:33:49

called her two days before he died. He sounded scared

1:33:51

and seemed afraid of dying. Good. Yeah,

1:33:53

I hope he was scared. I hope he was terrified. Excuse

1:33:56

me. Mitchell said in her interview, he

1:33:59

is as remorseful as he is capable

1:34:01

of being. He said he is so grateful he didn't

1:34:03

kill me and that he was mentally ill when he did it. I

1:34:05

had made peace with that information. Joseph

1:34:08

also told her that he experienced incredible neglect and

1:34:10

abuse during his childhood, but nothing he

1:34:12

said changed her mind about his execution.

1:34:16

Despite witnesses getting a good look at him in his car,

1:34:18

that motherfucker is still roaming around

1:34:20

out there. However, following shooting those

1:34:22

two young men in the park, Joseph Franklin will finally

1:34:24

be arrested in Kentucky on September 25th,

1:34:26

19th, just over a month after these park

1:34:28

murders, and the way he got

1:34:30

arrested is so random, so ridiculous.

1:34:33

Police were not looking for him, not what I

1:34:35

expected, and very avoidable on

1:34:37

Jimmy Joe's part. I love

1:34:39

these weird little moments in these stories. At 2.10

1:34:41

a.m. that day, police in Florence, Kentucky, part of

1:34:43

the Cincinnati metro area, they received

1:34:45

a report of a robbery at a gas station. The

1:34:48

attendant described a getaway vehicle as a silver

1:34:50

and maroon 1975 Chrysler with Indiana plates. The

1:34:53

car was found across the road at the Scottish Inn. It

1:34:56

was registered not to Jimmy Joe, but

1:34:58

to 19-year-old Gary R. Kirk, and Kirk

1:35:00

was arrested on suspicion of robbery. Jimmy

1:35:03

Joe just happened to be staying in the motel

1:35:05

room next door to Gary Kirk, and

1:35:07

when the cops came to arrest Kirk, fucking Jimmy,

1:35:10

this is outrageous, fucking Jimmy Joe, called

1:35:13

the motel front desk and complained about all

1:35:15

the noise that the cops were making,

1:35:18

that they were keeping him up. Then

1:35:20

when the motel clerk told him there wasn't shit he could do about it,

1:35:22

it's fucking cops. He now calls

1:35:24

the Florence Police Department, and that arrogant

1:35:27

moron complains to dispatch. He

1:35:29

claimed that one of, that Kirk's Chrysler was blocking

1:35:31

his car, now he couldn't leave, he

1:35:33

was trapped, and he couldn't sleep because of all the noise. Dispatch

1:35:36

tells him they'll see what they can do, but

1:35:39

then nothing happens, and Jimmy Joe gets more annoyed.

1:35:42

And then when the car still hasn't moved out for a little while, and there's

1:35:44

still police out there making noise, this fucking

1:35:46

idiot goes full Karen, calls

1:35:48

back dispatch, demands essentially to speak to the

1:35:50

manager. I

1:35:53

love it so much, eventually the chief of

1:35:55

police gets on the phone and

1:35:57

explains this fucking idiot that

1:35:59

they can't move. the car. They're investigating a robbery. It's going

1:36:01

to take a little time. And then

1:36:03

this gets better. As officer Dennis Collins, an

1:36:05

officer at the motel investigating the robbery was getting

1:36:07

ready to leave the scene, the motel clerk tells

1:36:09

him about this crazy man in the

1:36:12

room next door to the suspect who won't stop

1:36:14

calling him and complaining. Officer

1:36:16

Collins now agrees to go to Franklin's room and talk

1:36:18

to him about Gary Kurtz's car. Hey dude, fucking calm

1:36:20

down. We're gonna move the car soon. You

1:36:23

know? And then

1:36:25

as he now walks over to the

1:36:28

room, he looks at Franklin's Camaro parked outside his

1:36:30

room and he sees a revolver just laying openly

1:36:32

on the front seat. And he gets

1:36:34

a bad feeling in his gut about this hot head with

1:36:36

the fucking revolver laying on the seat who won't shut the

1:36:38

fuck up about the crime scene. So he

1:36:40

calls in this guy's license plate number for a check, finds

1:36:43

out that the car matches the description of a

1:36:45

vehicle connected to a double homicide in Salt Lake

1:36:47

City. And Franklin, when he talks

1:36:49

to him, matches the description of the alleged shooter.

1:36:52

This moron. Backup is

1:36:54

now called in and a team of officers arrest Joseph Franklin. And

1:36:56

Franklin in his room. How random

1:36:58

is that? After getting away with

1:37:00

murder after murder for three years, Jimmy Joe basically

1:37:02

arrests himself. He doesn't

1:37:05

think about how maybe he should hide his

1:37:07

gun before going full Karen

1:37:09

on the police, especially since he's killed a lot of people over

1:37:11

the last three years. For a guy

1:37:14

who's been so good at evading law enforcement, this was quite

1:37:16

the mistake. However, in a

1:37:18

criminal sense, Jimmy Joe will quickly redeem himself.

1:37:21

Within an hour of his arrest, he escapes. A

1:37:24

lot of weird shit going on this day. He sneaks

1:37:26

out a window in an interrogation room in Florence when

1:37:28

an officer steps outside for a few moments. What

1:37:31

if that guy got fired? They don't say. And

1:37:33

then he was just gone. Just split

1:37:35

quick. Police later that morning will

1:37:37

bring out bloodhounds, search the local woods, they'll go door

1:37:39

to door, hand out flyers, put the word out via

1:37:42

local news, local radio. Nada. He's

1:37:44

a ghost. He's

1:37:46

also still making dumb choices though. So

1:37:48

shortly after his escape, he calls his ex-wife Anita Cooper.

1:37:51

And he mentions that he's heading out to Florida. He's

1:37:53

going to sell his blood, make some

1:37:55

extra cash. Now the FBI gets word out

1:37:58

to blood bank centers all across the nation. especially

1:38:00

in Florida. And they pass a flyer out

1:38:02

with Joseph Pinscher in description of these places. They

1:38:05

use that FBI profile. Agent Douglas and his team put

1:38:07

together and they will catch him again. Just

1:38:09

a month after escaping from a police precinct, Joseph

1:38:11

Franklin is arrested October 28, 1980

1:38:14

in Lakeland, Florida. Special FBI

1:38:16

agent Fernando Rivera was going around to

1:38:18

different blood banks and plasma donation facilities

1:38:20

in Central Florida. And he

1:38:22

had given a wanted flyer of Joseph to

1:38:24

a lot of places, including Saratec Biologicals. Later

1:38:27

that day, Saratec, the receptionist, named

1:38:30

Claudette Mallard, sees a man matching Joseph's description

1:38:33

and his ability. He said

1:38:35

his name was Thomas Alvin Bonnert. Two

1:38:37

technicians see a Grim Reaper tattoo in his right

1:38:39

forearm and an American Eagle tattoo on the left.

1:38:43

They went into the manager's office and informed

1:38:45

him that Thomas matched the description of Joseph

1:38:47

Paul Franklin. Manager calls the FBI. Agent Bruce

1:38:49

Dando told him to keep Franklin there. Franklin

1:38:52

was told to rest for about 50 minutes after having his

1:38:54

blood drawn. And he asked, what if

1:38:56

I refuse to stay? Well, luckily

1:38:58

he did say. Dando called the

1:39:00

Lakeland PD. Then the FBI and Lakeland detectives meet

1:39:02

outside, wait for Joseph to leave and arrest him

1:39:05

outside the clinic. This

1:39:07

time, no one will let the slippery fucker out of

1:39:09

their sight. Three weeks later,

1:39:11

November 17, 1980, Joseph has arraigned on

1:39:13

federal charges in Salt Lake City for the murders of

1:39:15

David Martin and Ted Fields. Also accused

1:39:17

of three bank robberies, various weapons violations, flight

1:39:20

to avoid prosecution for his Kentucky escape, and

1:39:23

wanted for questioning about Larry Flint and

1:39:25

Vernon Jordan shootings. Following

1:39:27

spring, March 4, 1981, Joseph Franklin

1:39:29

is found guilty of

1:39:31

two federal civil rights charges in Utah. I thought

1:39:33

this was pretty brilliant. He

1:39:36

was convicted of denying Fields and Martin their

1:39:38

civil rights by killing them and thus preventing

1:39:40

them from using the public park due

1:39:43

to their race. March 23,

1:39:46

1981, Joseph ascends to two life terms

1:39:48

for this conviction. After

1:39:50

receiving his sentence, he calls the judge a communist agent and

1:39:52

a bastard tries to attack him in the courtroom. Also

1:39:55

leapt at the prosecutors, called the conviction of

1:39:57

Fars. Six months later, September 19, 1980, Joseph Franklin

1:39:59

all of this. Four days later, July 17, Joseph

1:44:04

convicted of the best shalom bombing in Chattanooga and

1:44:06

receives a 31-year sentence. Two

1:44:08

years later, February 14, 1986,

1:44:11

Joseph convicted of the first degree murders of Alphonse

1:44:13

Manning and Tony Schwinn in Dane County, Wisconsin, given

1:44:16

another life sentence. He

1:44:18

represented himself, showed no emotion when he heard the verdict,

1:44:21

and declined to make a comment. Dane County DA,

1:44:23

Hal Harlow, said, I'm opposed to capital punishment, but

1:44:25

Mr. Franklin put those beliefs to a sore test.

1:44:29

Mr. Franklin is a pathetic creature who will be

1:44:31

dangerous until the day he dies. The

1:44:33

trial lasted five days, and his closing arguments,

1:44:35

Hal Harlow described the murders as the closest

1:44:37

thing to killing for sport, which I mentioned

1:44:40

before he had ever seen. Joseph's confession also

1:44:42

presented a trial. He confessed to the murders the year

1:44:44

prior to 1984, that he came

1:44:46

to Madison to kill a former judge, Archie

1:44:48

Simonson, because of Simonson's ruling

1:44:50

in a sexual assault case. Simonson

1:44:52

testified he was criticized for being too lenient

1:44:55

in his sentencing of two black men who sexually assaulted

1:44:57

a white woman. Despite previously confessing,

1:44:59

Franklin denied killing the couple in his closing arguments,

1:45:03

and denied being in Wisconsin. He said in

1:45:05

the past that he lied in the confession to

1:45:07

get out of prison in Illinois and to move into Wisconsin. He

1:45:10

said, I did not kill Alphonse Manning and Tony Schwinn.

1:45:12

I did not come to Wisconsin to kill Judge Archie

1:45:14

Simonson. He described a life sentence as the

1:45:17

next best thing to being dead, and asked the

1:45:19

jury, would you sentence a loved one, a son, a daughter,

1:45:21

a wife, or a husband, based on the evidence? I

1:45:24

would imagine this is all a game to him, right? He just wants to see

1:45:26

how many times he can beat the system, maybe. Win or lose, right? He's still

1:45:28

never walking free. Jumping ahead

1:45:31

almost a decade now in 1994, Franklin confessed to

1:45:33

Gerald Gordon's 1977 murder that

1:45:35

had now went unsolved for almost 20 years. Franklin

1:45:38

claimed he was instructed to confess in a dream. He

1:45:41

would say, I was always having dreams on the streets telling me to

1:45:43

do things. I always felt they were messages from

1:45:45

God, so I would obey them. Eh,

1:45:47

did he tell the truth here, or was he working

1:45:49

some new angle, trying to get sent to a psychiatric

1:45:51

treatment facility where he'd have a better chance of escaping? November

1:45:55

9th, after confessing to federal agents, Joseph is charged

1:45:57

with capital murder and Gerald's murder, two counts of...

1:46:00

first degree assault for wounding two others

1:46:02

and three counts armed criminal action after

1:46:04

he confessed to the Richmond Heights, Brest,

1:46:06

Shalom, Knesset, Israel congregation synagogue shooting. He

1:46:09

confessed that he planned to kill as many Jewish people as

1:46:11

possible that day. He picked Brest Shalom

1:46:13

randomly after he visited other synagogues in the

1:46:15

area. Said he confessed because

1:46:17

he wanted to clear his conscience. Yeah.

1:46:20

June of 1995 while awaiting trial in St. Louis,

1:46:22

Joseph now confesses to the Vernon Jordan shooting. He

1:46:25

said simply, I will say that I did it. The

1:46:29

following year in 1996 after more than six

1:46:31

hours of interviews, Dr. Dorsey Lewis, a psychiatrist

1:46:33

from New York, concludes that Franklin has paranoid

1:46:35

schizophrenia and was a psychotic

1:46:37

whose thinking was delusional and confused. Lewis

1:46:40

will later review her records again in 2003 and 2013 and come to

1:46:44

the same conclusion. She also reviewed

1:46:46

reports and interviews with Franklin's family that lawyers

1:46:48

will cite her conclusions in their petition to

1:46:50

the governor to ask for a commutation or

1:46:53

reprieve of a death sentence that's still coming for him. The

1:46:55

petition said, Dr. Lewis finds

1:46:58

Mr. Franklin to be a chronically paranoid

1:47:00

schizophrenic person who suffers psychotic behaviors such

1:47:03

as blasphemous thoughts, auditory hallucinations, and

1:47:05

delusional beliefs such as the

1:47:07

belief that he is a Nazi and a Jew. So

1:47:10

he's Jewish now. Did he really believe

1:47:12

that or just play mind games? The

1:47:15

petition noted that Franklin had been this way since he

1:47:17

was an adolescent. Joseph Franklin and his siblings were beaten

1:47:19

by their parents and according to Franklin's older sister Carolyn,

1:47:21

Joseph always got the worst of it. Joseph

1:47:24

would later say in a 2013 interview with the Chattanooga

1:47:26

Times Free Press, I've been

1:47:28

diagnosed by Dr. Dorsey Lewis, a psychiatry

1:47:31

professor specializing in serial killers as I

1:47:33

think paranoid schizophrenic, something like that. I

1:47:36

would go to these periods man where I would just feel for

1:47:38

weeks really bad. I just after being locked

1:47:40

up a lot in your childhood and not being able to

1:47:42

socialize, you know, having to stay inside and sit on the

1:47:44

couch for a good part of your life. You find that

1:47:46

you don't have the social skills other people have. The

1:47:49

ability to socialize other people, it's kind of warps your brain.

1:47:51

I can't really explain it, but yeah, I've been

1:47:53

diagnosed with mental illness by Dorsey Lewis and also

1:47:55

by, and then it's inaudible. He

1:47:58

diagnosed me with the major case of obsessive compulsive. One

1:48:01

of the symptoms of that, you'll actually feel an inner voice telling you to

1:48:03

kill people. I don't think that's always

1:48:06

a symptom of OCD. One example

1:48:08

was when I was at the federal penitentiary in Marion, Illinois

1:48:10

during the 80s, one of the guards was escorting me out

1:48:13

to the wreck. He was by himself at

1:48:15

the time. This was before lockdown there. We

1:48:18

were cuffed in front and I was walking behind him. I had my

1:48:20

hands cuffed and I had a voice tell me to throw my hands

1:48:22

over the guard's head and strangle him to death. I immediately

1:48:25

rejected that thought because I liked the guard. He

1:48:27

was a good guy. That's one case I specifically

1:48:29

remember. I should be a fucking serial killer then.

1:48:33

You just can't blame it on these kind of thoughts. I

1:48:36

think about killing people on a regular basis. I'm like, ah, guy's

1:48:38

a piece of shit. We'll be better off without him, but I

1:48:40

don't do it. Also in

1:48:43

1996, Joseph Franklin confessed to those

1:48:45

two West Virginia murders, the young women headed

1:48:47

to that rainbow gathering. He confessed to

1:48:50

Deborah Dixon reporting on the case

1:48:52

for WTRC-TV. Deborah,

1:48:54

who worked for WTRC-TV for 44 years before

1:48:56

retiring in 2018, another

1:48:58

white, attractive woman. Did

1:49:01

you think confessing to unsolved murders, to these unsolved

1:49:03

murders would impress these women? That they'd

1:49:06

maybe want to visit him in prison and fuck him or something?

1:49:09

January 30, 1997, Joseph Paul

1:49:11

Franklin was convicted in Missouri now of capital murder for

1:49:14

that murder of Gerald Gordon and two counts of first

1:49:16

degree assault. And the jury recommends the

1:49:18

death penalty. So now he finally gets the death penalty. Joseph

1:49:21

Franklin represented himself in this trial and actually asked

1:49:23

the jury to sentence him to death. When

1:49:26

the jury voted for the death penalty, Franklin gave them

1:49:28

two thumbs up. That's

1:49:31

actually kind of funny. I wish that happened

1:49:33

more often. We the jury, sentence

1:49:35

the defendant to death. And then

1:49:37

the guy's just like, oh, oh,

1:49:40

fuck yeah, bro. Mama, I'm coming

1:49:42

home. This gets all excited and happy.

1:49:45

February 27, Jimmy Joe now sentenced to death. Yeah,

1:49:48

murder of Gerald Gordon, officially. Joseph

1:49:50

claimed he would kill again if the jury did not

1:49:53

have him executed. Joseph told the

1:49:55

Post-Dispatch he preferred the firing squad, but

1:49:57

he was sentenced to death in Missouri, a lethal

1:49:59

injection state. Also claims he would not

1:50:01

try to ever fight his death sentence. He even said it

1:50:03

disgusts me that these guys try to save their miserable lives.

1:50:06

However, he would end up fighting a lot for his life. They

1:50:09

almost always do when the time gets close. Franklin

1:50:12

represented himself at the Missouri trial. As I

1:50:14

said, he struck women from the jury because

1:50:16

he said they were compassionate. And

1:50:18

in Utah, women on the jury had voted for life in prison

1:50:20

instead of the death penalty and that pissed him off. Joseph

1:50:23

Franklin also told the paper that

1:50:25

he believed that the way to get rid of evil in the

1:50:27

world was to abort all the male babies. Keep

1:50:30

this up until the population is about 80% female. Most evil comes from

1:50:32

males. Yeah, he's

1:50:36

not totally wrong there. Why

1:50:38

do we cover so many more guys than gals

1:50:40

when it comes to episodes on dirtbags like serial

1:50:42

killers, serial rapists, cult leaders?

1:50:45

For the same reason every other true crime

1:50:47

podcast I've ever come across does. Dudes

1:50:50

are the ones doing the overwhelming majority of

1:50:52

this shit. According to

1:50:54

a 2000 study by the United Nations Office

1:50:56

on Drugs and Crime, men account worldwide for

1:50:59

about 98% of all homicide perpetrators.

1:51:03

And I can go on and on

1:51:05

with more stats, but I doubt any of you are like, I don't

1:51:07

know. That doesn't sound right. Lucifina

1:51:10

tells me it's obvious. February

1:51:12

28, 1997, the

1:51:14

Falls Church police announced that Joseph was a suspect in the

1:51:17

murder of Raymond Turner, that Burger King manager

1:51:19

he shot dead. Joseph had specific

1:51:21

knowledge of the crime according to one detective. He

1:51:24

had just admitted to the murder in that interview with

1:51:26

Janet tomorrow from Inside Edition I mentioned earlier. October

1:51:29

21, 1998, Joseph is now

1:51:31

convicted of the murders of those two children,

1:51:33

14-year-old Darryl Lane and 13-year-old Daunte Evans Brown

1:51:36

in Cincinnati, Ohio. The defense

1:51:38

presented no witnesses. The prosecution presented a

1:51:40

taped confession. Joseph Franklin confessed to

1:51:42

the Cincinnati murders the previous year in 1997 while

1:51:44

on death row in Missouri. Again,

1:51:47

an attractive white woman was the reason he confessed. According

1:51:49

to Cincinnati ABC local news affiliate, WCPO,

1:51:53

Joseph considered himself a ladies man. So,

1:51:56

prosecutor Joe Dieters sent a pretty young assistant

1:51:58

prosecutor, Melissa Powers, to interview with the court.

1:52:00

Franklin in prison. Prosecutor Dieters

1:52:02

knew that Joseph loved to talk to female

1:52:04

reporters, investigators, and prosecutors. Melissa

1:52:06

Powers was perfect. She studied Franklin, buttered him

1:52:09

up by sending some letters to him before

1:52:11

the interview that were a bit flirtatious. Franklin

1:52:14

was so into her he almost gave his confession before

1:52:16

she turned on the tape recorder. Powers

1:52:18

said after the interview, I sold my soul to the

1:52:20

devil in order to get what we needed. Powers

1:52:23

described the interview as traumatic and said I

1:52:25

was face to face with somebody very dangerous

1:52:27

that was capable of killing without any kind

1:52:29

of conscience or remorse. She

1:52:31

said she was scared, but I didn't want to show

1:52:34

it and blow this opportunity that Cincinnati may get in

1:52:36

order to bring closure to the families. I

1:52:38

flattered him a lot. I made him feel

1:52:40

that he was important. As for his assistance, definitely played

1:52:43

up the compliments and the flattery. Franklin

1:52:45

said the following in his confession video. I

1:52:48

just put the gun on the biggest dude first and I

1:52:50

fired one shot with that .44 Magnum. And

1:52:52

so I just heard somebody go make it sound

1:52:54

like they had just gotten shot. The

1:52:56

other guy bolted. It was just like through

1:52:58

a miracle that I got him. I did not even

1:53:00

aim the gun at him. I just shot in the dark hoping I would

1:53:02

get a lucky shot and sure enough I hit him. When

1:53:05

asked why he shot them, he said I was trying to get rid

1:53:07

of all the ugly people in the world. And I

1:53:09

considered blacks the ugliest people of all. Again,

1:53:12

he's talking about children here.

1:53:14

Biggest dude. Yeah, he was 14. The

1:53:18

jury took a whole 45 minutes to convict him of two counts

1:53:20

of aggravated murder. At one point, Joseph said

1:53:22

in court, your honor, I didn't even

1:53:24

have to confess to this in the first place. I

1:53:26

helped these people out solving this case. I

1:53:29

could not have done that. I should at least get credit for

1:53:31

that. And the judge, Hamilton

1:53:33

County common, please judge Ralph Winkler responded.

1:53:35

Throughout this case, you wind all the way. If

1:53:38

there was such a thing as a motion to wine, I'm

1:53:40

sure you would filed it. Motion

1:53:43

to wine. I like that judge. October

1:53:46

22, 1998, Joseph Franklin was sentenced to 40 years to life in prison

1:53:48

for the Cincinnati murders. Judge

1:53:52

Winkler also told him, I look at you and I

1:53:54

see the face of evil. August

1:53:57

14, 2013, the Missouri State

1:53:59

Supreme Court. the Joseph Franklin be

1:54:01

executed by lethal injection on

1:54:03

November 20th. Franklin had

1:54:05

now been convicted of eight total murders in Ohio,

1:54:07

Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin, and Missouri. He'd also confessed to

1:54:09

or was implicated in 13 additional

1:54:12

murders and confessed to the attempted

1:54:14

murders of Larry Flint and Vernon Jordan. That's

1:54:16

not even kind of all the fucking bank robberies and everything. And

1:54:19

just like catching this guy was complicated, so will be

1:54:21

executing him. Some interesting history here

1:54:23

illustrating how tremendously complicated carrying out a state

1:54:26

ordered execution can be. Initially,

1:54:28

both Joseph Franklin and another death row inmate

1:54:30

named Allen Nicholson were supposed to be executed

1:54:32

with the drug propofol. Nicholson

1:54:35

had murdered a

1:54:37

man named Richard Drummond in 1994, so

1:54:39

many dicks, Dick Drummond. Dick Drummer, that

1:54:42

guy clearly didn't have the easiest life with a name like that.

1:54:44

Now he gets killed. The murder was

1:54:46

labeled as a good Samaritan killing. Drummond

1:54:49

had offered him a ride after his car broke down in

1:54:51

the interstate, falling a robber he committed with two other men,

1:54:54

and Nicholson stole his car at gunpoint, loaded

1:54:57

stolen goods into it, then worried about the man ratting him out,

1:54:59

took him out of the woods and shot him. One

1:55:02

of the two other men, Nicholson's associate, Dennis Skillicorn,

1:55:04

had already been executed in 2009 for

1:55:06

the murder of Richard Drummond. And now

1:55:08

a guy named Richard Dieter. Yes, Dick Dieter, Dick

1:55:10

Drummer and Dick Dieter. What a world. Dick

1:55:13

Dieter was the executive director

1:55:16

of the Death Penalty Information Center, and he said

1:55:19

that there was concern about the use of the

1:55:21

drug propofol because the state of Missouri no longer

1:55:23

required a physician on the execution team. Propofol

1:55:25

is usually administered by a physician or a nurse,

1:55:28

anesthesiast, anesthesiast, oh my

1:55:30

god, not anesthesiologist, I

1:55:33

know how to say that word, Anna,

1:55:36

who fucking knows? A-N-E-S-T-H-E-T-I-S-T. I can't

1:55:38

figure out how to say that

1:55:41

word right now. Anesthesiast.

1:55:46

God damn it. Who was supervised by a physician,

1:55:48

and if the drug was administered improperly, it could

1:55:50

cause an inmate to suffer a little bit before

1:55:53

they're executed. You can't have that. Dieter

1:55:55

said about the decision, this is an experiment with a human

1:55:57

subject. This will be a sort of brute force of... where

1:56:00

you give them enough and they'll die. Okay?

1:56:03

Also, is it really wrong to experiment with a guy

1:56:06

like Joseph Paul Franklin? I don't think so.

1:56:08

Like for this level of guilty, do

1:56:10

we really have to worry about cruel and

1:56:12

unusual punishment? October 11, 2013,

1:56:15

Missouri Governor Jay Nixon postponed the execution of an

1:56:17

inmate that would be

1:56:20

executed with propofol because

1:56:22

now the European Union is threatening to

1:56:24

limit export of propofol if

1:56:26

it gets used by or in the

1:56:29

Allen-Nicholson execution, which would potentially cause a

1:56:31

nationwide shortage for hospitals and surgical centers

1:56:33

nationwide. So Governor Nixon issues

1:56:35

a state execution and the

1:56:38

Missouri DOC revises their execution

1:56:40

protocol. Propofol is the most

1:56:42

widely used anesthetic. There we

1:56:45

go. Fucking boom. Anesthetic. She

1:56:48

was an anesthesist. God damn it. In

1:56:50

the US, and 90% of it comes from Europe. So

1:56:53

getting the supply significantly reduced would have wreaked

1:56:55

havoc on the American medical system.

1:56:58

And the EU is and was the death penalty. Is

1:57:01

and was against. Words

1:57:03

are fucking tricky today for some

1:57:05

reason. The EU is and was

1:57:08

against the death penalty. What

1:57:10

if I talk like this the whole time?

1:57:12

I wouldn't be able to talk very long, but I

1:57:14

pronounce really crystal clear. And

1:57:16

they have legislation that prevents the export of

1:57:19

certain chemicals for capital punishment. And now

1:57:21

in 2013, the EU is considering adding propofol

1:57:23

to the list of these chemicals, but that

1:57:25

would greatly reduce the amount available in the

1:57:27

US and would hurt both pharmaceutical profits and

1:57:29

European and US relations. The

1:57:32

German manufacturer of the drug. Oh,

1:57:34

boy. For zinnis. For zinnis copy had

1:57:37

begun to require all US distributors to sign

1:57:39

a contract promising they wouldn't sell the drug

1:57:41

to any departments of corrections. But around

1:57:43

2012, one of

1:57:45

the suppliers accidentally, for legal

1:57:47

reasons, had to say that send a container to

1:57:49

Missouri. The supplier emailed the state, asked

1:57:51

him to give it back. The state did not give it back.

1:57:53

They kept it for a little months. But then on October 9,

1:57:56

because of all this mess, thanks to the

1:57:58

ACLU, making an open

1:58:00

records request, they do return it to the supplier.

1:58:03

Missouri now said they would still proceed with the executions,

1:58:05

but would just use US manufactured

1:58:08

propovol. But then there were problems with that. So

1:58:11

complicated. Department of Corrections

1:58:13

documents obtained by the ACLU showed that Missouri

1:58:15

bought 100 vials of propovol in June

1:58:17

of 2013 from Hospira, the

1:58:19

only US manufacturer that time. But

1:58:22

then when asked if they knew Missouri was going to

1:58:24

use the drug for an execution, a company spokesperson responded,

1:58:27

we have been providing information suggesting that the

1:58:29

state of Missouri has a supply of Hospira

1:58:31

propovol and that the state purchased

1:58:33

it from an unauthorized distributor. And

1:58:35

that distributor was Mercer Medical. In

1:58:37

April of 2013, a sales rep had emailed the

1:58:39

Missouri DOC to convince him to use Mercer Medical

1:58:41

as a vendor. The DOC bought the propovol from

1:58:44

Mercer a few months later. Then

1:58:46

returning now to October 11, 2013,

1:58:49

when Missouri Governor Jay Nixon ordered the state

1:58:51

of execution, he also ordered the Missouri DOC

1:58:53

to find a new drug for execution. So

1:58:55

he retired this propovol mess. I'm

1:58:57

sure privately he was like, why is it so fucking hard to kill this

1:58:59

motherfucker? This dickhead didn't have to jump

1:59:01

through any hoops when he decided to pull the trigger over and over

1:59:04

and over. A week

1:59:06

later, the DOC now proposed Pentabarbapatol.

1:59:09

Pentabar-but-ol. Fun

1:59:12

words. A sedative traditionally used

1:59:14

by vets to euthanize animals. The

1:59:17

DOC also changed the rules so they could hide the

1:59:19

identity of the supplier by adding them to the execution

1:59:21

team. The

1:59:23

ACLU sued, arguing that this change took away

1:59:25

public oversight of the process. I

1:59:28

get the importance of not setting the wrong precedent with all

1:59:30

this, but also so much time and effort and money being

1:59:32

spent to keep two sociopaths alive. In

1:59:35

the state of Missouri, a pharmacist needs a prescription

1:59:37

for a specific patient for a legitimate medical use

1:59:39

to dispense Pentabar-but-ol. Many

1:59:43

questioned if using Pentabar-but-ol for

1:59:46

lethal injection qualified as legitimate

1:59:48

medical use. A new

1:59:50

execution protocol was whipped up now for using

1:59:52

Pentabar-but-ol, and it stated that if the inmate

1:59:54

does not die after the first dose, the

1:59:56

DOC should take out a 32-ounce framing hammer

1:59:59

with a waffle. I'm going to put it on the top

2:00:01

of my mouthful head and swing it by a grown man. I have it

2:00:03

swung by a grown man into the

2:00:05

person to be executed skull, and it

2:00:07

should never take more than three good whacks to flatline

2:00:10

that motherfucker. No one survives the hammer.

2:00:12

That's an exact quote from the VLC. Now,

2:00:14

they said that if an inmate does not die after

2:00:16

the first dose, they just administer another syringe, but

2:00:18

only after a sufficient amount of time for death to occur. Okay.

2:00:21

Sounds good. Death throw inmates,

2:00:23

though, now argue that using untested drugs is cruel

2:00:25

and unusual punishment. Took a

2:00:28

lot of hypocritical balls from most of these inmates to make

2:00:30

that argument. Several inmates filed federal

2:00:32

lawsuits to delay their executions until the protocols

2:00:34

were reviewed. Even Joseph

2:00:37

Paul Franklin's shooting victim, Hustler publisher Larry

2:00:39

Flint, spoke out against the execution of

2:00:41

Joseph and worked with the ACLU to

2:00:43

stop it now, which is surprising. Larry

2:00:46

Flint wrote an article about his decision for The Hollywood Reporter

2:00:48

published on October 17, 2013. It

2:00:51

said on March 6, 1978, as I was still

2:00:53

in the steps of the Georgia courthouse where I was fighting

2:00:55

obscenity charges, a series of gunshots rang out.

2:00:58

I remember nothing that happened after that until I woke up

2:01:01

in the intensive care unit. The damage to

2:01:03

my central nervous system was severe, and it took

2:01:05

several weeks before doctors could stabilize me. From

2:01:07

then on, I was paralyzed in the waist down and have been

2:01:09

confined to a wheelchair ever since. In

2:01:12

all the years since the shooting, I have never come

2:01:14

face to face with Franklin. I would

2:01:16

love an hour in a room with him and

2:01:19

a pair of wire cutters and pliers, so

2:01:22

I can inflict the same damage on him that he

2:01:24

inflicted on me. But I do not want to

2:01:26

kill him, nor do I want to see him die. As

2:01:29

far as the severity of punishment is concerned to me,

2:01:31

a life spent in a 3x6 foot cell

2:01:33

is far harsher than the quick release of a lethal injection.

2:01:37

And cost to the taxpayer? Execution has been

2:01:39

proven to be far more expensive for the state than

2:01:41

a conviction of life without parole, due to

2:01:43

the long and complex judicial process required for capital

2:01:45

cases, as we are seeing. As

2:01:47

I see it, the sole motivating factor behind the death

2:01:50

penalty is vengeance, not justice, and I

2:01:52

firmly believe that a government that forbids killing among its

2:01:54

citizens should not be in the business of killing people

2:01:56

itself. Not a bad

2:01:58

argument. I still like knowing

2:02:00

these guys are dead though and that there's

2:02:02

literally a 0% chance that they will

2:02:04

ever get out and hurt anyone again. But

2:02:07

he does make a very intelligent argument. I do get it. Random

2:02:10

quick trivia about Larry Flint. Dude did

2:02:12

not just publish a hustler. He was a hustler. In

2:02:15

early 1965 when he was just 22, Flint

2:02:17

took $1,800 from his savings, approximately

2:02:20

$18,000 a day when adjusted for inflation, his

2:02:23

father's bar in Dayton, Ohio called the Kiwi, refitted

2:02:25

it, soon was making $1,000 a week, about $10,000 in today's

2:02:27

dollars, used

2:02:31

the profits to quickly buy two other bars, worked

2:02:34

as many as 20 hours a day,

2:02:36

had to take amphetamines to stay awake, used

2:02:38

the profits from his three bars to open

2:02:40

a new bar called the Hustler Club that

2:02:42

featured nude, hostess, dancers, and then

2:02:44

he got fucking super rich. Back

2:02:46

to his legal battle over what drugs

2:02:48

should be legally allowed to end a death row in a mate's life.

2:02:52

October 22, 2013, the Missouri

2:02:54

DOC announces that despite the protests, despite all

2:02:56

the lawsuits, they had adopted

2:02:58

a single drug policy for executions, and

2:03:01

the state would use pentabarbitol instead

2:03:03

of propofol. But

2:03:05

the ACLU, not done. November 9,

2:03:07

the ACLU of Missouri files a motion on

2:03:09

Larry Flint's behalf to unseal documents regarding the

2:03:11

executions, the organization seeking to

2:03:13

learn the identity of the anesthesiologist who

2:03:16

would perform Franklin's execution. The filing

2:03:19

stated Flint has learned about the secrecy shrouding

2:03:21

Missouri's execution process. This includes

2:03:23

recent revelations that Missouri appears to have used

2:03:25

unsavory methods to secure and maintain execution drugs,

2:03:29

and tried to hide that and other information from

2:03:31

the public. The motion also noted that

2:03:33

the DOC said their doctor was certified by

2:03:35

the American Board of Anesthesiology, but

2:03:38

that the organization has a rule that

2:03:40

states that a member should not participate in an

2:03:42

execution. Flint now argued that the

2:03:44

doctor helping with the execution was either lying

2:03:46

about being board certified, or

2:03:49

lacked the professional standing required to

2:03:51

maintain certification. How

2:03:53

crazy that is.

2:03:55

He's working so hard, spending so much of his own money, I imagine,

2:03:57

to keep a guy who put a bullet in his spine and parallel it.

2:04:00

They're realizing for the ways down alive. Also,

2:04:02

weird spots of being for a medical professional if

2:04:05

they did in fact swear to not take part in

2:04:07

an execution, should medical professional

2:04:09

organizations be allowed to state that their members

2:04:12

can't be part of an execution if the

2:04:14

nation or organization exists in does in fact

2:04:16

condone executions. Very

2:04:19

odd legal and moral territory waiting in

2:04:21

there. So why was the

2:04:23

identity of the execution anesthesiologist made public? Well, because

2:04:25

back in 2005, a federal judge had halted Missouri's

2:04:28

use of the death penalty because

2:04:30

the surgeon in charge testified

2:04:32

that he had dyslexia, occasionally

2:04:34

confused numbers, and didn't follow

2:04:36

written procedures. I

2:04:39

love that the guy straight up just testified. Yeah,

2:04:41

I get numbers wrong. I just kind of wing it

2:04:43

a lot of times. Imagine that doctor working on you. So

2:04:47

how much of that is it going to take to knock me out, doc? I

2:04:49

don't know. I can't read. Ah,

2:04:52

somewhere around, I don't know. This much just kind

2:04:55

of holds up his fingers. I'll figure it

2:04:57

out. I always do. This is my first rodeo. After

2:05:00

this testimony, the state then made it unlawful to

2:05:02

reveal the identities of the execution team. Despite

2:05:05

the efforts of the ACLU, it was looking more and

2:05:07

more like Franklin's execution date on November 20th, not going

2:05:09

to change. Joseph

2:05:12

Franklin would give several interviews during the final days of his life.

2:05:14

We've gone over excerpts from some of them. During

2:05:16

the last three weeks of his life, he did a

2:05:18

series of phone interviews with the Intelligence Report, the Southern

2:05:20

Poverty Law Center's magazine. Excuse

2:05:23

me. And he told the news outlet, I was mentally

2:05:25

ill when I was out there, man. I mean, I was just completely

2:05:27

out of control, to be quite honest. That was

2:05:29

not me out there in the streets doing that crap. I

2:05:31

would never even think of doing that stuff again. If

2:05:34

he was so mentally ill, so out of control,

2:05:37

how was he so good at avoiding capture? He

2:05:40

also said, I just had totally been

2:05:42

obsessed with Mike Komp and Hitler and wanted to kill some

2:05:44

Jews. That was another thing that was

2:05:46

crazy. That was obviously the work of somebody

2:05:48

who was mentally ill, because who would want to go

2:05:50

around shooting somebody worshiping at a synagogue? I just

2:05:53

cannot imagine myself committing a crime like that anymore. I've

2:05:55

actually covered the conclusion over the years, a

2:05:57

person that is anti-Semitic, that in and it's true.

2:06:00

is a sign of mental illness. Okay,

2:06:03

he's probably bullshitting here and being manipulative, but

2:06:05

I do like that sentiment. Being

2:06:08

a diehard racist, I don't know if that's a

2:06:10

sign of mental illness, but it's definitely a sign of a real

2:06:12

ignorant, defective way of thinking, since

2:06:15

there's no rational, logical basis for racism. Joseph

2:06:18

said that he cured himself of his mental

2:06:20

illness by meditating and reading while in solitary

2:06:22

confinement, saying it's called bibliotherapy. Franklin

2:06:25

spent most of three decades in solitary confinement. He

2:06:28

had to do so for his own safety after that time

2:06:30

in 1982, and he got stabbed 15 times by

2:06:33

a group of black inmates. He would

2:06:35

not be well received by

2:06:37

black inmates in general the entirety of his

2:06:39

time in prison. Franklin said

2:06:42

in his interview, I still think miscegenation

2:06:44

is wrong, but now I know it's none of

2:06:46

my business. Huh. So

2:06:49

he recognizes anti-Semitism as a sign of mental

2:06:51

illness, but still opposes whites and blacks getting

2:06:53

married. Is he saying or just dating?

2:06:56

Is he saying he's still mentally ill? Joseph

2:06:58

claimed that because he was abused for years by

2:07:00

his mom, he lacked the intelligence and maturity to

2:07:02

keep from losing control to his hate. Also

2:07:05

claimed that for suffering from years of undernourishment, it

2:07:08

delayed his mental development and left him susceptible to

2:07:10

wrong ideas. Joseph also

2:07:12

talked about his early involvement with hate groups, saying

2:07:14

I was convinced that the only good people were

2:07:16

in that organization and anybody not in line with

2:07:18

that belief, they were wrong. Just goes to

2:07:20

show you how you can be totally convinced

2:07:22

that something you believe in is true when nothing can

2:07:24

be further from the truth. I

2:07:27

agree wholeheartedly with that sentiment. So

2:07:29

many people out there in the world, right?

2:07:31

So absolutely certain that their view is right.

2:07:34

Everyone else is wrong, but they're

2:07:36

terrible people. People who oftentimes employ completely

2:07:38

morally reprehensible beliefs were such a tribal

2:07:40

species, still so quick to point at

2:07:42

the other, blame them for all

2:07:44

the world sins. Joseph claimed

2:07:46

that he no longer hated black or Jewish people

2:07:48

saying I'm pro-Semitic instead of anti-Semitic. He

2:07:51

also said that at the St. Louis County jail, he interacted with a lot

2:07:53

of blacks who worked there and I saw they were

2:07:55

people just like us. And one of the good

2:07:57

things about blacks is his quote. And one of the good

2:07:59

things about They forgive and forget. I think

2:08:04

he still has some work to do. Do they, all of them? Because,

2:08:07

you know, they all think the same thing, right? You know,

2:08:09

your melanin level totally dictates your

2:08:11

beliefs. I bet he was just

2:08:13

saying that shit to try to be spared from being executed. Saying

2:08:16

that blacks as a group forgive and forget

2:08:18

is still very racist. Assigning

2:08:20

any general qualities to any

2:08:23

race is, in fact, racist. Some

2:08:25

black people, I imagine, forgive and forget, and

2:08:28

some don't. Some white people, forgive and forget,

2:08:30

some don't. Personality traits

2:08:32

not hardwired to a race, and what even is a

2:08:34

race, right? Like I said earlier, there is no racial

2:08:36

unity. Franklin

2:08:39

also said he changed his mind about Jewish people when

2:08:41

he read a book titled How Your Mind Can Keep

2:08:43

You Well. He said he learned meditation from

2:08:45

the book, one of the chapters featured a discussion between

2:08:47

author Roy Masters and his rabbi, which surprised Franklin. He

2:08:49

said, I just thought I should continue with it and

2:08:51

see what this guy is teaching. Also

2:08:54

talked about his remorse for all the murders. To say I have remorse for

2:08:56

it would be an understatement. I don't think there

2:08:58

are words strong enough to put it in. That

2:09:00

was not my true self. I was out of control, out of my mind.

2:09:03

It was just not something that I would do or even think about now. Joseph

2:09:06

acknowledged that some would argue he was the only express remorse to save

2:09:08

his life, but he said, I ain't that shallow. People

2:09:11

who knew me for many years would know I ain't that shallow to come

2:09:13

up with something like that. He

2:09:15

said he felt like his life should be saved. He

2:09:17

said, quote, if the jury had to walk a mile in my

2:09:19

shoes, I'm certain they would not come back with a sense of

2:09:21

death. It's humiliating to put

2:09:23

a person to death with a drug like that. It's humiliating to

2:09:26

put someone like me in the same category as an animal. Tough

2:09:30

shit. It isn't moral to kill somebody using

2:09:32

that type of drug. I don't think it's right. God,

2:09:35

he's so full of shit. Actually hearing that

2:09:37

quote makes me want to kill him even more.

2:09:39

He made the same argument against giving him

2:09:41

a life sentence previously. He just didn't

2:09:43

want to pay the piper, just trying to save his own ass, like almost

2:09:45

all these serial killers. He also just keeps

2:09:47

acting like he didn't do this stuff. He's not that bad of a

2:09:49

person. He was somebody else. That was not

2:09:52

my true self. I was different. I was a

2:09:54

different person that did that thing. Not me. Buddy,

2:09:57

you didn't just have a bad day. You did that shit

2:09:59

for years. He tried to

2:10:01

downplay the time he murdered those two children in Cincinnati. He said

2:10:03

to the young victims, Dante, and Darryl, they just happened to walk

2:10:06

by on the sidewalk, to tell you the truth. I

2:10:08

basically set up an ambush for whoever walked by. I had

2:10:10

no idea how old they were. I

2:10:13

even blamed OCD for what he did. In an

2:10:15

interview with the Inquirer, he said, I had race on my mind

2:10:17

at all times. I was just very impressionable when I was young.

2:10:19

I just became obsessed with it. I

2:10:21

just warped my brain. I actually considered myself a

2:10:23

warrior. I felt that, as misguided as I was, I

2:10:25

felt I was fighting to preserve the white race. Franklin

2:10:29

told CNN in one of his final interviews, I felt like I

2:10:31

was at war. The survival of the white

2:10:33

race was at stake. I considered my mission, my three-year

2:10:35

mission. Same length of time Jesus was

2:10:37

on his mission. From the time he was 30 to 33. Yeah,

2:10:40

he's the same as Jesus. When

2:10:43

asked if he thought I was a hero to hate groups, he said, well, that's

2:10:45

what they tell me. I'd rather people

2:10:47

like me than not like me, like most people. I'd

2:10:49

rather be loved than hated. And they're not the only

2:10:51

ones who love me, though. There are a lot of

2:10:54

Jews who love me, too. Now,

2:10:57

when asked why Jewish people would love him, he answered, when

2:11:00

you commit a crime—this is maybe the best

2:11:02

quote of his—he said, when you commit a

2:11:04

crime against a certain group of people, a bonding

2:11:07

takes place. It seems like you belong to them.

2:11:09

Fucking what? Maybe he really

2:11:11

was mentally ill. He was mentally

2:11:13

ill. Saying

2:11:15

that killing members of a group is a way to endear

2:11:17

yourself to that group is insane. By

2:11:20

that rationale, Jewish people today should

2:11:22

fucking love Hitler more than any other person on

2:11:24

earth. No one worked harder to bond

2:11:26

with the Jewish people than Hitler

2:11:28

and Franklin's reasoning. November

2:11:31

18, 2013, two days from

2:11:33

Franklin's scheduled execution, Missouri Governor Jay Nixon

2:11:35

denies clemency. Now, the next

2:11:37

two days, a flurry of final motions will be made, quickly

2:11:39

spiraling up all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court. But

2:11:42

at 5.20 a.m. on November 20, the

2:11:44

U.S. Supreme Court denies Franklin's state

2:11:46

of execution. He's out of options. Moments

2:11:49

finally at hand. Finally,

2:11:52

November 20, 2013, now 63-year-old

2:11:54

Joseph Paul Franklin executed by the state of Missouri

2:11:56

for the 1977 murder of Gerald Gordon. He

2:12:00

was administered a lethal injection of pentabarbitzal

2:12:03

and it worked like a champ. He

2:12:05

was given a dose at 607 a.m. November

2:12:07

20, 2013, died peacefully 10 minutes later. Felt

2:12:11

a lot less pain than most of his victims. I

2:12:13

bet. He refused a final meal

2:12:15

and he made no final statement. After

2:12:18

all his talk, he died quietly. And

2:12:20

that will take us out of today's timeline.

2:12:25

Good job, soldier. You made it back. There.

2:12:29

There. Before

2:12:36

we move forward, as I often do at

2:12:38

this point in the show, it always seems like a good place

2:12:41

to do it. We do have another sponsor, of

2:12:43

course, a very, very real

2:12:45

one. Time's

2:12:47

up, kids. Brought to you today by

2:12:50

Jimmy Joe's All White Sandwiches. And

2:12:52

Jimmy Joe's, we don't do wheat bread. Like,

2:12:55

we do not do it. If you even

2:12:57

bring wheat bread or rye, are you kidding

2:13:00

me? Dark brown rye bread?

2:13:02

You bring wheat or rye into Jimmy Joe's, we'll shoot you.

2:13:05

We will literally shoot you. No, Jimmy

2:13:07

Joe's has the best all white bread.

2:13:09

And that's it. And

2:13:11

what will we put in between that bread for your tasty

2:13:14

sandwich? Mustard? Yellow mustard? Are you

2:13:16

fucking kidding me? You bring in

2:13:18

some fucking mustard to Jimmy Joe's? Try it, I

2:13:20

dare you. I'll literally have you killed. No. You

2:13:23

can have white mayonnaise. No veggies,

2:13:25

except white onions. What about

2:13:27

cheese? You can have cheese. You

2:13:30

can have white American kiddos. That's it. But also

2:13:32

Swiss. I guess that's not it. But don't call

2:13:34

it Swiss. Call it Holy White. You call it Swiss.

2:13:37

Sounds like some immigrant shit. Like

2:13:40

it might be some kind of secret Jew cheese. You

2:13:42

call it Swiss. I fucking dare you. I dare you

2:13:44

to call it, I'll shoot you. You'll

2:13:46

be shot. You can have white bread. White mayo.

2:13:49

White kiddos. Or Holy White cheese. Only.

2:13:51

You can have chicken or turkey. But only the

2:13:53

white meat. That's it. Bring

2:13:56

in a turkey drumstick. Bring in a Jimmy Jones. I

2:13:59

dare you. You do that and I'll fucking shoot you. We'll

2:14:02

fuck around with Jimmy Joes. All

2:14:04

white sandwiches. Coming during

2:14:06

the next two weeks, with every ten person with a

2:14:08

Jimmy Joes delicious master race all white sandwich, I'll

2:14:11

give you coupons for a free haircut at Dick Burt's

2:14:13

Hair Salon, where no one gets rushed

2:14:15

and everyone gets brushed. Just

2:14:17

don't put your Jimmy Joes all white with all white

2:14:19

sandwich anywhere near one of Dick Burt's hair

2:14:22

brushes. Don't make me tell you why. Come

2:14:24

on down, grab a bite of Jimmy Joes unless you're

2:14:26

not white or Jewish or dated non-white, or

2:14:28

aren't cool with the total annihilation of all non-white. In

2:14:30

that case, stay the fuck up! Here's our Jimmy Joes

2:14:33

material. Go choke on our big-ass

2:14:35

pile of dark-ass roast beef meat. You fucking

2:14:37

Tommy Race Trader sub-human degenerate. Last thing. Jimmy

2:14:40

Joes not to be confused with Jimmy John, who've

2:14:42

lost their way, their race freighter. They

2:14:45

implement zero racial integrity into the fine art of sandwich making. Plus

2:14:47

I find their meat to be quite salty and their sandwiches go too

2:14:49

carb-heavy. It's just too much bread. Fuck Jimmy John.

2:14:52

Fuck, come to Jimmy Joes. If you're white. Maybe

2:14:56

not a good sponsor. But they pay

2:14:59

surprisingly well. Joseph Paul

2:15:01

Franklin, AKA James Clayton

2:15:03

Vaughan Jr. He would have fucking loved Jimmy

2:15:05

Joes. What a waste of life. Right?

2:15:07

The dude had talent. Imagine if he would have

2:15:09

applied the same passion and intensity he put into robbing banks and

2:15:11

killing innocent people into a... I don't know, a

2:15:13

sandwich shop. He could have for

2:15:15

sure been a successful entrepreneur. Right? He could

2:15:17

grind. He could have employed

2:15:20

numerous people of various races, nourished people of various races, made

2:15:23

a bunch of money, raised good kids,

2:15:25

good grandkids. But instead, he let his childhood

2:15:27

anger cause him to give in to the dark,

2:15:29

mindless tribalism side of human nature. He

2:15:32

so badly wanted to belong, to feel important, to have a

2:15:34

higher purpose in life. And he found

2:15:36

that purpose in hate. Of course he did. Hate

2:15:38

was almost all he knew. What

2:15:40

if he would have had a father who remained a part of

2:15:42

his life, a good part of his life, someone who loved him,

2:15:44

someone who taught him that the color of your skin doesn't matter.

2:15:47

But what's in your heart does matter. What

2:15:49

if he would have had a mom who boosted him up instead

2:15:52

of constantly tore him down, someone who made him feel special instead

2:15:54

of someone who always made him feel less than. Special

2:15:57

shout out this week to all the good parents

2:15:59

out there. adoptive parents, birth

2:16:01

parents, step parents, grandparents who

2:16:03

have become parents, the grandbabies, guardians and aunts

2:16:05

and uncles and family friends who end up

2:16:08

in parental roles. Anyone using a

2:16:10

good chunk of their time and energy to actively build

2:16:12

up and nurture the next generation. One of

2:16:14

the most noble and important things you can do in life. If

2:16:17

we all parent to the next generation to have a

2:16:19

good, I take pride in being a contributing member of

2:16:21

society, work ethic. A solid, not everyone else has to

2:16:23

be just like me, empathetic heart. A rational,

2:16:26

let's lean on critical thinking more than

2:16:28

emotional reactions mind. Let's be guided

2:16:30

more by kindness and generosity than hatred and

2:16:33

selfishness life perspective. How

2:16:35

many Joseph Paul Franklins would the next

2:16:37

generation have? Maybe

2:16:39

none. Maybe absolutely none.

2:16:43

No Joseph Franklins, no Charles Manson's, no Adolf Hillers

2:16:45

or any of the other dirtbags we've covered. Maybe

2:16:48

to really have that is nothing more than just a

2:16:50

dream. But what a beautiful dream that is.

2:16:53

One certainly worth trying to achieve. In

2:16:56

the meantime, let's do our best to help law

2:16:58

enforcement lock these sick motherfuckers up forever. Time

2:17:00

now for today's takeaways. Time's

2:17:03

up. Top five

2:17:05

takeaways. Number

2:17:08

one, Joseph Paul Franklin was convicted of eight

2:17:11

total murders in Ohio, Tennessee, Utah, Wisconsin and

2:17:13

Missouri between 1977 and 1980. And

2:17:16

he confessed to or was implicated in 13

2:17:19

additional murders. He also confessed to the attempted

2:17:21

murders of both Larry Flint and Vernon Jordan.

2:17:24

For three years, he traveled across the country, robbed

2:17:26

up to 16 banks for money, donated blood for

2:17:28

money, dying his hair until it started to fall

2:17:30

out, shooting innocent people. Before he

2:17:33

was briefly arrested in Kentucky, no one knew who he

2:17:35

was or that all of his many crimes were

2:17:37

connected. He was the worst kind of thief of the night.

2:17:40

He just targeted lone black people, Jewish people,

2:17:42

white women who had dated a black man

2:17:44

at one time, interracial couples, killed mothers, fathers,

2:17:46

children, a lot of fast food workers, a

2:17:48

bunch of young couples in love. And a misguided sick

2:17:50

attempt to start some type of helter-skelter

2:17:52

race war. Number

2:17:54

two, two of Joseph Franklin's most

2:17:56

high profile victims were Larry Flint, publisher of Hustler

2:17:58

Magazine. and civil

2:18:00

rights leader Vernon Jordan Jr. Neither

2:18:02

man killed, but Larry Flint was left

2:18:04

permanently paralyzed from the waste town and suffered a lot of

2:18:07

other health problems for the rest of his life. Number

2:18:10

three, in 1976 Joseph changed

2:18:12

his name from James Clayton Vaughan Jr. to

2:18:14

Joseph Paul Franklin. His new name

2:18:16

showed his admiration for both Benjamin Franklin, a man

2:18:19

who disavowed his racist beliefs later in life, and

2:18:21

Nazi leader Joseph Goebbels who held his super racist

2:18:24

beliefs right up until the day he died,

2:18:26

right up until he took not just his own life but also

2:18:28

ordered the execution of his children. Number

2:18:31

four, Joseph Paul Franklin claimed that

2:18:33

he had a change of heart while on death row. In

2:18:36

the final weeks of his life, he did several interviews

2:18:38

with various news outlets and talked about it, recanted his

2:18:40

racist beliefs, kind of. Still didn't think black and whites

2:18:42

should date, and he expressed remorse for

2:18:44

his murders, kind of. He basically kept saying that the

2:18:46

other guy that did all the crime was somebody else,

2:18:48

not really him. Many believe,

2:18:51

including me, that this was mostly just

2:18:53

a last ditch effort to get a stay of execution.

2:18:56

And number five, new info. This

2:18:59

entire episode was fucking made up. Joseph

2:19:03

Franklin, how now would you be? Joseph

2:19:05

Franklin ended up having a relationship

2:19:08

with his daughter Lori toward the end of his

2:19:10

life. Lori was just one years old when her

2:19:12

dad was arrested. Lori told the intelligence report,

2:19:14

I knew he was in prison for killing blacks. I didn't

2:19:16

know how many. I didn't know any details until I got to

2:19:18

be 18. Then I looked it up for myself. As

2:19:22

Lori's a racist as her dad was, that's

2:19:24

a weird sentence. I knew he was in prison for

2:19:26

killing blacks, like they're different species. Lori

2:19:29

never saw her father in person after his arrest. She always

2:19:31

meant to visit him, but said something always came up. She

2:19:34

was one of five people allowed to witness the execution, but didn't want

2:19:36

to go and said she couldn't afford to if she did want to

2:19:38

go. Said that her father tried

2:19:40

to write her and call her. He sent her money from

2:19:42

prison before he was sent to death

2:19:44

row in 1997. Lori said despite

2:19:46

him being in prison all the time, he really tried being a dad

2:19:48

as best he could. A lot of guys don't even do that and

2:19:51

they're out here. Fair. Lori

2:19:54

said that she loved her dad and was praying for a miracle

2:19:56

at the end of his life so he could meet his great

2:19:58

granddaughter. Lori spoke to her dad for the first time. and almost

2:20:00

two years, a week before his execution. She

2:20:02

said her father was becoming too crazy and solitary towards the end of

2:20:04

his life and she needed to keep her distance. When

2:20:07

she didn't speak to him that last time, she said it was the first time

2:20:09

she'd ever heard him laugh and that he apologized

2:20:11

for not being a good father to me and asked me to

2:20:13

please forgive him. Of course, I said yes. And

2:20:16

I'm not sure that I like that he found

2:20:18

peace at the end of his life there. It's not

2:20:20

like his victims were given that

2:20:22

same opportunity. Time sucks,

2:20:25

top five takeaways. The

2:20:30

one man race for Joseph Paul Franklin has

2:20:33

been sucked. Thank you to the Bad

2:20:35

Magic Productions team, help in making Time Suck, such as the

2:20:39

2:20:45

sure Discord keeps running smooth and everyone over

2:20:54

on the Time Suck subreddit and Bad Magic

2:20:56

subreddit. And now let's head

2:20:58

on over to this week's Time Sucker updates.

2:21:03

You're up to it. Get

2:21:05

your Time Sucker updates. First

2:21:09

up today, speaking of good parents, we

2:21:12

have a message from one, Rich Lefevre,

2:21:15

maybe. Sorry, Rich, I'm pronouncing

2:21:17

your name right. Rich Lefevre,

2:21:19

Lefevrever, Lefefevrever. Rich

2:21:23

wrote in with a subject line of Proud of My Son. Dan,

2:21:26

I love your podcast. I was turned on to it by my

2:21:28

son roughly two years ago. He saw

2:21:30

me in Milwaukee and raved about the show. I binged all the

2:21:32

episodes and waited every Monday for the next one. My

2:21:35

son turns 22 on April 2nd. I'm so proud of

2:21:37

this young man. He's kind, caring, he's on

2:21:39

the right path in his business career. My

2:21:41

birthday started out with my wife calling me on April Fool's Day,

2:21:45

or his birthday, excuse me. His birthday started out with

2:21:47

my wife calling me on April Fool's Day and told

2:21:49

me she was going to be induced for labor, labor

2:21:51

because of her blood pressure being elevated. I

2:21:53

was at work at the time and told her, I'm busy,

2:21:56

quit joking around. Ha ha, April Fool's, and I hung up

2:21:58

on her. She called back crying. Not

2:22:00

a joke. I

2:22:03

don't want to have an April Fool's Day baby. We

2:22:05

rushed to the hospital and she fought him off until that night.

2:22:08

He was born April 2nd, 2002 at

2:22:10

2.22 a.m. and he's 22 this year. Oh,

2:22:13

that's awesome. If he could shout

2:22:16

out Happy Birthday to Peyton from

2:22:18

his proud father, he would get a kick out of

2:22:20

it. Of course, I give the show a 3 out of 5 stars

2:22:22

because it continues sucking. Thank

2:22:24

you. Thank you, Rich. And sorry this is a bit late,

2:22:26

but Happy Birthday, Peyton. You share the same birthday as my

2:22:28

dad, actually. April 2nd. He

2:22:31

turned 70 this year. Not sure if

2:22:33

he's still killing, but he's still capable. He's

2:22:36

doing great health-wise. Still strong. Still

2:22:38

got a certain look in his eye.

2:22:40

Thanks for turning your dad onto the show and I'm so glad the

2:22:42

two of you can enjoy it together. I

2:22:44

love seeing grown kids and their parents finding common ground

2:22:46

and enjoying life together. It's very special. If

2:22:48

you have it, treasure it. Let's

2:22:50

keep the family theme going with another fine family

2:22:53

message from Lane Lewis who

2:22:55

writes in with the subject line of You Finally Copy. I've

2:22:57

been coming to LOD. Let's see how this fine

2:22:59

sack bonded with the fam over that now. Lane

2:23:02

writes, Green suck master and all

2:23:04

the bad magic crew. I'm writing in to share my

2:23:06

Cummins' LOD story, but unlike most people, I was actually

2:23:08

Cummins' LOD by your standup. I

2:23:10

was driving home and listening to your Get Out of Here devil album

2:23:12

and I pulled into my driveway and turned my car off. Several

2:23:15

hours later, my family piles in my sister's car

2:23:17

to go eat dinner and my phone connects automatically

2:23:19

before my sister can connect hers and she shrugs

2:23:21

it off. As we go to pull

2:23:23

out of the driveway, you belt out over the radio.

2:23:25

Let's talk about hard dick, Father Sunstop. My

2:23:29

sister puts the car in park and just looks at me and

2:23:32

says, what the fuck was that? Both my parents

2:23:34

look horrified. I just shrug and say, you wouldn't get it.

2:23:36

And now for obvious reasons, I've lost phone privileges in

2:23:38

other people's cars. Sorry for the

2:23:41

long email. Love the show. Keep it up. Lane

2:23:43

Lewis. Lane Lewis, you sound like a superhero. Maybe

2:23:46

I think of Lois Lane. Lane Lewis.

2:23:48

Lane, what a beautiful moment. I hope your dad

2:23:50

is very nervous about how you want to

2:23:53

connect with him now. I hope it keeps him up at night. I'm

2:23:55

wondering where he went wrong with you. For

2:23:58

real though, I like that you We're all

2:24:00

heading off as a family to do something together now

2:24:03

even more family love From brother

2:24:05

lover, but not that way and sweet sack I

2:24:07

don't think and sweet sack Elizabeth Cruz who wrote in the

2:24:09

subject line of God is in the fourth dimension She

2:24:12

starts with okay. Hear me out If

2:24:14

we follow the theory that the existence of a higher dimension

2:24:16

means a lower dimension cannot exist except in the mind of

2:24:18

another Bean then in your own words, that means

2:24:21

we should only exist in the mind of a fourth dimensional being does

2:24:23

that not lend credence to? God I swear I'm not

2:24:26

crazy I wholly believe both science and religion can still

2:24:28

exist as someone with a degree in

2:24:30

religious studies Well, my professors who also happen to be

2:24:32

a Lutheran pastors said it best science

2:24:34

and religion are not in competition Because

2:24:37

they are asking different questions science asks

2:24:39

what and how while religion asks who

2:24:41

and why? So if

2:24:43

according to the Bible God is all-knowing and all around

2:24:45

us Then the only explanation is that we are just

2:24:47

figments of a fourth dimensional beings mind much

2:24:49

like the characters in a story all Known by

2:24:51

the author who wrote it This would also

2:24:53

explain why experiences of God by actual Prophets only appear

2:24:55

in dreams or visions as they are the only time

2:24:57

we would be able to break out of our forced

2:25:00

perception of the Third dimension or like

2:25:02

a character in a D&D game rolling for perception with

2:25:04

a natural 20 and getting a glimpse of the game

2:25:06

board Instead this would also allow

2:25:08

for people to have their own religious experiences and practices

2:25:10

because who can say there's only one being in the

2:25:12

fourth dimension Maybe your God is

2:25:14

there too. Maybe I'm rambling. Maybe I sound

2:25:16

like a loon Maybe you'll get it PS a

2:25:19

good trip on toad venom sounds like a successful

2:25:21

perception check to me three out

2:25:23

of five stars That's some good shit Elizabeth. Also if you read

2:25:25

the shout out to the best brother in the world Adam West

2:25:28

No, not that Adam West who would be Batman,

2:25:31

but still a badass Elizabeth

2:25:34

lovely you love your brother enough to think he's the best in the world.

2:25:36

That's awesome Also love the

2:25:38

thought that we could all exist in the mind

2:25:40

of some higher creator and that perhaps even multiple

2:25:42

higher powers exists Some kind of

2:25:44

creative force of other beings and

2:25:47

the different people have caught different glimpses of

2:25:49

you know different entities You

2:25:51

know what I really love about pondering the possibilities of

2:25:53

a higher power or higher powers The

2:25:55

magical mystery of it all then a sneak

2:25:58

it adds to lives that can feel a bit like like,

2:26:00

wash, rinse, and repeat sometimes. Be born, struggle,

2:26:02

love and hate, succeed and fail, then die.

2:26:05

Hard stop for you, but repeated endlessly

2:26:07

for billions like you with no ultimate purpose other than

2:26:09

to enjoy what time we have here, which is still

2:26:11

a lot. I am thankful if we

2:26:14

just have this life, but sure

2:26:16

is fun to speculate about what may else be

2:26:18

out there. That's why I love topics like

2:26:20

the fourth dimension episode. And the final

2:26:22

one today relates to a friend, Smart Sack John

2:26:24

Rand sent this message my way with the subject

2:26:26

line of a very trippy episode. He

2:26:29

writes, hello, Dan, Lindsay, all your glorious meat sack

2:26:31

staff. Listen to the Psychedelics episode,

2:26:33

loved it like I do most of them. Had to

2:26:35

ask a question in regards to the material, or maybe

2:26:37

a little missing material. I know Dan

2:26:40

is or was friends with Shane Moss from way back.

2:26:42

There's a part in the episode where you mentioned

2:26:44

MAO inhibitors. And I thought that might be

2:26:46

a segue into mentioning Shane in his documentary

2:26:49

called Psychonautics, a comics exploration

2:26:51

of psychedelics, which is

2:26:53

available on Amazon Prime. After the episode had

2:26:55

wrapped, I was a little bummed that one of

2:26:57

the foremost experts on Tripping Balls didn't get a mention.

2:27:00

Shane and his tales of synchronicity are something else,

2:27:02

yes. Maybe the Jason character

2:27:04

Dan had to break his mind at

2:27:06

the Tool Concert trying to distance himself

2:27:08

from being considered the foremost expert. No, it wasn't Shane

2:27:10

there. Anyway, I mentioned Shane because I'm

2:27:13

concerned about him. About a year ago, he disappeared from

2:27:15

all of the content creations on platforms I followed him

2:27:17

on. Since he's a known

2:27:19

manic, I worry that he's having one of his

2:27:21

episodes, hoping he's not back in the psych ward, or

2:27:23

worse, not one of his own choosing.

2:27:26

If he can't talk about his exploits on air, I understand.

2:27:28

Keep up the good work. Thanks for doing what you do.

2:27:30

Three out of five stars wouldn't change a thing. Excuse me.

2:27:32

Sincerely, meat sack John Rance. John, so

2:27:34

glad you brought up Shane. And

2:27:37

I definitely should have mentioned he is fine. Yeah,

2:27:39

he's doing great. We're

2:27:41

still friends. We talked several times this past year.

2:27:44

The doc on Amazon, I've watched it. It's phenomenal.

2:27:47

While he and I have not tripped together, we've

2:27:49

definitely had more of what I would call academic

2:27:51

discussions about psychedelics. And yeah, no, he's doing very

2:27:53

good. He's very healthy. He seems

2:27:55

very happy. He's touring right now with a

2:27:57

show about psychedelics called A Better Trip. He

2:28:01

just worked out the performance in Las Vegas

2:28:03

first, and had a little residency there. He

2:28:05

was just at South by Southwest, and also a

2:28:07

few weeks ago, he's been taking this all over

2:28:10

the place. He is brilliant, truly a brilliant man.

2:28:13

Shane Moss, it's M-A-U-S-S.

2:28:15

S-H-A-N-E. m-a-u-s-s.com. You can check out his

2:28:17

tour. He's going to be all over

2:28:19

in April, May, June

2:28:22

in America, in Canada, Portland,

2:28:24

Sacramento, Beverly Hills, Santa Cruz,

2:28:27

Tacoma, Boise, all

2:28:29

over British Columbia. Lucky bastard.

2:28:32

If you see a show, and you talk to him, tell him I said

2:28:34

hi. If you're just someone listening, you're

2:28:36

curious to learn more about psychedelics, he

2:28:39

knows a lot more than I do. Both from

2:28:41

the experiential side and the research side. Yeah,

2:28:44

he's a very, very interesting dude. Tell

2:28:47

him I sent you if you do say hi, and that

2:28:49

is all for today. Six

2:28:53

times, suckers. I needed that.

2:28:56

Yes, we all did. I

2:29:27

don't know. Just keep on sucking. And

2:29:44

last thing, anyone else still

2:29:47

really disturbed thinking about Dick Bird? Whew.

2:29:51

That guy's messed me up

2:29:53

a little bit. I've had trouble sleeping at night since I

2:29:55

learned about that demented pile of shit. If you still haven't

2:29:57

heard that true crime episode about that serial killer...

2:30:00

Make sure you listen to it next and listen

2:30:02

to the whole thing. I saved the worst for last on

2:30:04

that one, but you're gonna wanna tough it out and make

2:30:06

it to the end. I mean, Joseph

2:30:08

Paul Franklin was disgusting, but still

2:30:11

not Richard Bird. I will

2:30:13

never think of Nevada

2:30:15

the same way again. Time

2:30:19

for a quick break to talk about McDonald's.

2:30:21

2:30:30

2:30:32

better with a delicious medium iced coffee.

2:30:34

2:30:36

go wrong. Price and participation may vary,
