Theological musings on culture, politics, and all the other things we like to argue about. Paul prefaced his thoughts about things Jesus did not specifically address with the phrase "To the rest I say". This is the spirit in which I will address these issues. Nothing here is authoritative. Some of it will be wrong. All of it is based in a masters level theological education, decades of scriptural study, some basic awareness of the world around us, and of course prayer. Many things in this world are of great importance, and can be instructed by the faith and ethics of the way of Jesus, while still having ample room for debate even among his followers. As a Lutheran pastor, I refer to these things as "adiaphora", things neither commanded nor forbidden by God. They are mostly found in the application of those things that are commanded or forbidden by God. Jesus explicitly commanded us to love our neighbors as ourselves. We enter the realm of adiaphora when we ask the question of "how" to do that. It is an abuse of the privilege of the pulpit for any pastor to pretend to answer that question with the divine authority we ascribe to our ordination, but that doesn't mean we don't all have some ideas. In this podcast I apply my theological education, congregational experience, and faithful study and prayer to all the other things that can't be addressed with the authority of the Sunday morning pulpit.
