If you don’t know where you’re going any road will do.

When I saw this quote on a poster in an office building a long time ago, I literally stopped on my tracks and stared at it. You see, I was in a situation where I really didn’t like anything I was doing. I was very unsatisfied and I just couldn’t connect my situation then to what I really wanted. In short, I didn’t find any meaning in my work life.

What’s fascinating about this was that when I read that quote, I felt a sense of relief… Relief… You see, I realised that I didn’t have to be sad or frustrated for being where I was. I was there simply because I had no clear destination in my mind — it was that simple.. and it was not because everyone and everything didn’t like me.

But wait, it didn’t stop there. You see, I realised that since that was the case, then I should relax a little bit because clearly I was not on the road of where I should be. That meant, that all I had to do was to trek my current road a little bit and leave it as soon as there’s a better road for me.

If you’re on “any road”, then you’re either on:
One – on a road leading to a place you don’t desire
Two – on a road leading to a place which “could do” but which is really not what is best for you.
Or Three – on a road leading to a destination you don’t know

Amongst these, the best “any road” you could be on is number three — that is, being on a road leading to a destination you don’t know. Why is that? On the number one and number two roads, you have an awareness of where they could possibly lead you. The reason for that is because you know the history of those roads. For example, if you study such and such course, then you can easily become a politician; or if you constantly spend more money than you make, then you’ll easily fall into debt.

However, on the third road — leading you to a destination you don’t know — there is a sense of mystery simply because it is different than what you know or even believe. This road can bring you new thoughts about a lot of things. Believe it or not, it can even lead you to think about what destination you should have. For these reasons, road number three might actually be a way for you to go to the RIGHT ROAD for you — leading to the best destination for you.

So yeah, if you’re on any road leading you to a place you don’t desire or leading you to a place which “could do” but which is really not what is best for you THEN just relax, trek it a bit and just move on to THE RIGHT ROAD as soon possible.. And yeah, if you’re on a road leading you to a destination you don’t know, still relax a bit. Try to see what you can learn and then move on to the RIGHT ROAD as soon as possible.
