Radovan Ivšić wrote this Surrealist play “Kralj Gordogan” in 1943, and it was first performed in exile in Paris.
Translated from Croatian and adapted for Trafika Europe Radio by Carla Stockton; directed by Andrew Singer; with original soundtrack elements composed by Istvan Peter B’racz. King Gordogan is played by Jon Vickers-Jones.
Following the performance, we host a discussion with the translator and director of this work.
Ruthless King Gordogan rules his kingdom with an iron fist, and his leadership has created a cruel world, dominated by pain and uncertainty. The King is pitiless; he has a limitless bloodlust, and he enthusiastically murders anyone and everyone who stands in the way of his vaulting ambition, including his own son. The kingdom awaits a savior, and indestructible knight, who will surely slay King Gordogan and stop the madness. But will he come? And if he does, can he prevail?
