Before we get to the show notes please consider donating to Australian charities and organisations as a show of support for the disaster relief. The Australian bushfires have significantly eclipsed the environmental effect of both the recent Californian and Amazon fires. The relief effort will take years and the environment in the affected areas may never be the same. More than one hundred fires still burn around the country, as both people and wildlife are displaced or killed.

Below are the links for RFS NSW and the Red Cross if you’d like to learn more about the situation or have the capacity to donate - it all counts.

Red Cross - https://fundraise.redcross.org.au/drr

Thank you for the support, from all over the world!

Today’s episode features the gut health whizz, Dr Orla O’Sullivan. Orla is a Research Fellow in Teagasc Food Research Centre, Moorepark and graduated from UCC with a BSc in Biochemistry and subsequently a PhD in Bioinformatics. Her research focuses on elucidating the microbiome from various environments including human gut and lung, rumen and food. Of particular interest to her is the role of exercise and diet, specifically whey protein, on the human gut microbiome both in healthy and diseased cohorts. Orla also has a keen interest in Science communication and sits on the education and outreach committee of the APC.

Orla was recently awarded the early career researcher of the year award from the Science Foundation of Ireland, and today Mark talks to Orla about the benefits to high performance athletes of promoting diversity in microbiome for gut health.

A fascinating discussion including real world examples from her work with the Irish Rugby Union team. Let us know what you think or if you’d like to hear more about gut health from another expert around the world!
