Speedwagon's airplane made an unannounced,
0:40
middle of the night landing. This is my
0:43
friend Kyle McLaughlin, the star of Twin Peaks.
0:45
And he's telling me about how he discovered
0:47
a real-life Twin Peaks in rural North Carolina,
0:49
not far from where he filmed Blue Velvet.
0:52
What was on the plane was copious amounts
0:54
of drugs, coming in from South America. Supposedly
0:57
Pablo Escobar went looking for other spots,
0:59
quiet, out of the way places to bring in
1:02
his cocaine. My
1:06
name is Joshua Davis, and I'm an investigative
1:08
reporter. Kyle and I talk
1:10
all the time about the strange things we come across. But
1:13
nothing was quite as strange as what we
1:15
found in Varnam Town, North Carolina. There's
1:18
crooked cops, brother against brother. Everyone's got
1:20
a story to tell, but does the
1:22
truth even exist? Welcome

2:08
everyone and welcome to episode 348 of

the True Crime All the Time Unsolved
2:12
Podcast. I'm Mike Ferguson and with me
2:14
as always is my partner in true
2:17
crime Mike Gibson. Jimmy how are you?
2:19
Hey I'm doing okay how about you?
2:21
I'm doing very very well. Awesome. We're
2:23
on our third podcast of the night. We are. So
2:26
Saturday a new Patreon
2:29
episode dropped. And
2:32
it's on this guy named Lars Itso
2:34
who claims that
2:37
he thought intruders had broken
2:39
into his house. He goes out into
2:41
his hallway with a shotgun and
2:44
ends up shooting his wife in the chest. But
2:47
is that the real story? I
2:49
don't know because he tells a number of
2:51
stories. We also have a new
2:53
episode out right now on TCAT
2:55
and it's on Caitlin Armstrong, a
2:58
former yoga instructor who
3:00
was found guilty of killing
3:02
professional cyclist Anna Mariah Wilson.
3:05
Wilson briefly dated Caitlin's on
3:07
again off again boyfriend during
3:10
a break in their
3:12
relationship. It's a really
3:14
good episode. It's a fascinating case
3:16
because there's a mountain of circumstantial
3:19
evidence and then there's a
3:21
lot of things that this woman does after
3:24
Mariah is killed. Her behavior. Yeah
3:27
that just do not make her
3:29
look good at all. Let's
3:32
go ahead and give our Patreon shout

5:04
a to get into this absurd true
5:07
crime all the time? And so I
5:09
am ready. We're talking about Alvin Mauer.
5:11
Alvin. Matlock was a twenty one year
5:14
old army better. Who. Went missing
5:16
from his cabin outside the city
5:18
of Spokane in nineteen sixty one.
5:21
Rumors. Circulated after he disappeared in,
5:23
the police came to believe that
5:26
he met with sound play. But.
5:28
They had few li. Alvin.
5:31
Edwin Matlock was born on
5:33
January seventeenth, nineteen thirty. Or
5:36
who said he was only twenty one years old when
5:38
he was nice and. They're. Not a
5:40
lot of details about Albums
5:42
Life available on line. We.
5:44
Know that he communicated somewhat
5:46
irregularly with his mother and
5:49
his younger brother Cli. His.
5:51
Family called him bud or buddy.
5:54
In this is. The. Struggle.
5:56
right? With doing some of these cases, the
5:59
go back list. Ada like this
6:01
one does nineteen fifty wind here.
6:03
It. Is a little tougher. With. The
6:06
research in finding newspaper articles especially
6:08
you ought like on someone's early
6:11
life because that would have been
6:13
in the thirties and forward exactly.
6:16
Alvin served in the army, but details
6:18
about a service were not reported in
6:20
any of the source is used for
6:23
this episode. Alvin was living
6:25
alone in a cabin on Browns
6:27
Mountain outside the city of Spokane,
6:29
Washington. Investigators. Believe
6:31
him when missing around March First,
6:34
nineteen Fifty one. Your. Been
6:36
Washington. I think I did
6:38
one time. I believe.
6:41
We. Drove up. Part. Of Mt.
6:43
Hood. Yeah. That's the big now
6:46
in Washington. Think it is by
6:48
could be wrong. My mouth
6:50
to. See as a big Melman there.
6:52
Are. You waiting for need a jump in and
6:55
say. I've already
6:57
said I still. Mt. Hood is
6:59
there. I put myself out there and I you put
7:01
yourself out. Over or
7:03
distraught? Okay, that's a good story
7:05
it is. Alvin
7:08
was last seen alive in the
7:10
city of Spokane before you disappear,
7:12
he spoke to his family and
7:15
them the exact location of his.
7:17
Alvin. Was described as a
7:19
loner and an outdoorsman, so he
7:22
didn't communicate with them daily or
7:24
even weekly. Alvin. When months
7:26
without speaking to his family so
7:28
they didn't realize he was miss.
7:31
It. Was so long as you ever win. Without. Speaking
7:33
to your family, not not your kids and
7:35
wife. But. Your family. Out
7:37
not more than a week or two. Even.
7:40
When you're a grown up. You know college? Have
7:42
to say when I was growing up I was
7:44
with my family so. This
7:46
can hard not to talk to them. No.
7:48
Probably not couple of weeks, maybe?
7:51
Yeah, Although. I did go
7:53
on some bender so I don't remember all
7:55
of yeah. But. As you work
7:57
without talking to your families typically.
8:00
If it's only been a few weeks, the longest.
8:02
So. If you go month, they probably get
8:04
pretty concerned. Oh, a month for sure? Yeah,
8:07
No. Doubt they would be. Extremely
8:09
concerned Man it harder back then
8:11
when I was in south Sir
8:14
was when in have a cellphone
8:16
know. So. It was
8:18
hard for them to to contact me.
8:21
Your. You have like one pay phone in
8:23
the hallway. Yeah and then somebody had to
8:25
pick it up. Know. Who you were
8:27
in income find you. Instead. It
8:29
they go I'll tell me called never hang
8:31
it back on earth are just leave it
8:34
said on the top yes. New.
8:36
You ask me about going
8:38
to Washington. Washington does seem
8:40
like a good place to
8:42
be. If you are a
8:44
loner, if you are an outdoorsman,
8:47
Yeah. I think some of the states like. Colorado.
8:51
Wyoming, Montana. Places like
8:53
that get some more.
8:56
Wilderness. To see some
8:58
and undeveloped areas. So.
9:00
Obviously Spokane. Is
9:03
very developed but I know know he
9:05
was outside of that in the cabin.
9:07
Alvin family discovers he was missing
9:10
on November Twenty second. Nineteen Fifty
9:12
One. Thanksgiving. Day Alvin
9:14
didn't show up for Thanksgiving, Dinner
9:17
with his family is placed. Susanna.
9:19
Talked about your how do you
9:21
know. When. To
9:24
start to get worse. When. For them,
9:26
it was when he didn't show up
9:28
for Thanksgiving dinner. I think they were
9:30
pretty accustomed to not seeing him for
9:33
a long stretches, But when he said
9:35
hey, I'm going to be there for
9:37
Thanksgiving dinner and then doesn't show up.
9:40
Well. That starts to panic meet. Albums
9:42
mother was upset worried so the
9:45
family drove out to his cap
9:47
on Brown Mountains. They found the
9:49
cabin empty and albums vehicle gone.
9:52
Albums. Mother Marie was the one
9:54
who reported him missing. The. Police
9:56
launched an investigation. But.
9:59
There really was. To go on. And
10:01
I'm sure a lot of this had to do with
10:03
the fact that you know he was alone. In.
10:05
Living in this club and I don't know she
10:08
had name. Is. Nineteen Sixty one,
10:10
you know on T Cat this
10:12
week we talked about things being
10:14
caught on a ring doorbell Kim
10:16
right and tests kind of clued
10:18
police and on what it happens.
10:20
You're not going to have that
10:22
here though. you're not. Really?
10:24
Isolated I think. And it sounds like
10:26
that's what he wanted. A. little isolation.
10:29
Rumors. Circulated around town that Alvin
10:32
had packed up and moved to
10:34
Alaska. His. Family wondered why he
10:36
wouldn't tell them is plenty. None.
10:38
Of the sources mentioned any some
10:41
know your conflicts that would have
10:43
made Alvin want to cut off
10:45
contact. With. Her. Clyde.
10:47
Matlock was only twelve years old
10:49
when his older brother disappeared. He.
10:51
Said he believed the explanation that
10:54
Alvin moved to Alaska for years
10:56
because that was what he wanted
10:58
to boot. As more time
11:00
passed the family new and started
11:03
to accept that Alvin wasn't in
11:05
Alaska. And I do see how
11:07
that would have to said in that something.
11:10
Could you say well you know
11:12
he wonder fresh start somewhere else
11:14
and for whatever reason he didn't
11:16
tell. Us. Yeah. I did
11:18
see where you know you could
11:21
think that but eventually. He.
11:23
Gonna start to question why
11:25
he's not contacted us It
11:27
all away as the road
11:29
why as he visited. Hey,
11:32
I've got. Hey. I'm settled in
11:34
a one to give you my new
11:36
address, may a phone number or something,
11:38
or just to let you know that
11:40
I'm doing okay. Go to the
11:42
wasn't like. They. Disliked each over.
11:45
Another. Rumor was that Alvin had
11:47
been having an affair with a married
11:50
woman. He. Got into a fight
11:52
with her husband when he taught them
11:54
together. allegedly it was the one. Who.
11:56
Shot Alvin during the fight. You.
11:59
know what could happen when you go missing,
12:02
a lot of rumors can happen. If nobody
12:04
knows what really happened, you're gonna
12:06
have all these rumors floating around. Well, if
12:08
there's no evidence, then, you
12:10
know, people start to talk,
12:12
as people do. There might
12:15
be some, you know, over the
12:17
fence gossip, and, you know, people trying to
12:19
play a little bit of amateur detective. What
12:21
do you think happened to Alvin? Well, I
12:23
think he was having an affair, and this
12:26
lady shot him. I think he
12:28
went off to Alaska. Yeah, I think you're gonna have
12:30
a lot of that. Sometimes in these rumors, you have
12:32
a little bit of truth, you know? Maybe. But
12:34
not. You may not even know. Exactly. It's
12:37
the truth. The police and
12:39
Alvin's family believed that he met
12:41
with foul play, but there was
12:43
no evidence to prove this or
12:46
to implicate any suspects. So
12:49
Alvin's case went cold, and
12:51
decades passed with no new leads.
12:53
In 2016, Alvin's brother Clyde, who
12:57
was 77 at this
12:59
point, and his wife Patricia
13:01
spoke with the Spokesman Review,
13:03
a local paper for
13:06
Spokane. Clyde and Patricia
13:08
attended the first-ever missing person
13:10
event, hosted by the Spokane
13:12
County Medical Examiner's Office. People
13:14
who attended the event were
13:17
able to file police reports, submit
13:20
DNA and dental records, and provide
13:22
photos of their missing loved ones.
13:25
Clyde Matlock provided his DNA, in
13:28
case Alvin's remains are found
13:31
one day. His DNA is
13:33
currently entered into the National
13:35
Missing and Unidentified Persons System
13:38
database, or NAMUS, which
13:40
didn't exist when Alvin went missing.
13:43
And I do think this is a
13:45
big problem, Gibbs, when it comes to
13:47
some of these older missing persons cases.
13:50
The databases didn't exist.
13:53
DNA didn't exist. Let's just throw
13:55
that out there. And so, by
13:58
the time... some
14:00
of that technology did come about,
14:03
in some of these cases, the missing
14:06
person's family or a
14:08
lot of their family was deceased. But
14:10
good for Clyde, thinking ahead. Oh,
14:12
absolutely. And what a great event to
14:15
get people out and to give
14:18
them the opportunity to provide
14:21
information that could potentially
14:23
solve a missing person's case. Clyde
14:26
told the spokesman in review, he just
14:29
wanted to find out what happened to
14:31
Alvin. Patricia spoke on the
14:33
rumor that Alvin was shot by his
14:36
former lover saying the story was he
14:38
was crying for help and they
14:40
just let him die. Clyde
14:42
and Patricia started their own investigation
14:45
to try to find potential witnesses.
14:48
She believes someone knows what happened
14:50
to Alvin and that they've kept
14:52
it a secret for decades. So
14:55
I'm getting a little bit of season
14:58
three of True Detective vibes here. Yeah.
15:00
Did you watch that season? No,
15:02
I didn't see that one. I thought
15:05
it was a really good one. They spanned a
15:07
long period of time. So you have
15:09
two detectives who are probably in their early
15:12
30s and then at some point
15:14
they're in their like 80s. Oh,
15:16
wow. And they're still investigating
15:19
this crime. It's really good. You
15:21
should definitely watch it. I want to catch
15:23
the new one too. Yeah. Yeah. I haven't started that
15:26
one yet. A few years later
15:28
in 2019, the Spokesman
15:30
Review published an article on
15:33
a notorious local crime family
15:35
that may be connected to
15:37
Alvin's disappearance. The Klein family
15:40
who were, according to the Spokesman Review,
15:42
the scourge of police from the 1930s
15:44
to the 1960s. It's
15:48
a long run. Of scourgeness.
15:51
I don't think that's a word, but you're going
15:53
to be scurgy. That's a long
15:55
run. In 2019, Lila Peterson, the descendant...
16:00
of the Clines did an interview
16:02
with the Spokesman Review about her
16:04
childhood. Lila said that she
16:06
thought she had a fairly normal childhood,
16:08
but she learned the truth about her
16:10
family as an adult. What, that they
16:13
committed hundreds of thefts? Yeah,
16:16
it was said that the family committed hundreds
16:18
of thefts around the region during that
16:21
time frame that I mentioned, and I
16:23
do think that would be a little
16:26
strange, right? As a child, do
16:28
you know everything that your
16:31
parents, your uncles, your extended
16:33
family is into? Probably
16:35
not. I'm sure they were shielded from
16:37
it somewhat. And even if you did,
16:39
did you know it was not normal?
16:41
Yes. Did you just
16:44
think everybody did that? Yeah. Or
16:46
did you just know that you weren't hurting for
16:48
money and that, you know, life was
16:50
good. Life was pretty good. Her
16:52
mother, Jesse Cline, and her father,
16:55
Robert Peterson, both
16:57
had criminal records. Jesse Cline
16:59
died in a nursing home in February 2014.
17:02
She suffered
17:04
a stroke and was never able to live
17:06
on her own again. Around this
17:08
time, Lila started to question some
17:11
of the lies she was told
17:13
during her childhood, and she had
17:15
questions about two murder cases. Surely
17:19
before her mother died, she spoke to
17:21
her uncle, Jay Cline, about her family's
17:23
past. She knew her mother wouldn't
17:25
tell her the truth. Jay Cline died
17:27
in 2017 at the age of 90. But Lily spoke
17:33
with Jay before his death and his
17:35
wife, Phyllis. She wanted to know
17:37
if her mother ever said anything
17:39
about the murder of her ex-husband
17:42
and Lila's stepfather, Don
17:44
Folkman. She also wanted
17:46
to know if her mother and
17:48
father were involved or responsible for
17:50
the disappearance of Alvin
17:52
Matlock, one of Jesse's
17:55
former lovers. Phyllis
17:57
Cline told her yes, Jesse was
17:59
involved. involved in both cases.
18:01
Wow. Now we're getting into
18:03
some interesting stories. Yeah,
18:06
I'm trying to imagine what it would
18:08
be like to sit down with a
18:10
family member, start
18:12
asking some questions, and
18:15
then all of a sudden be told that your
18:17
mother was involved in the death
18:19
of two men. One
18:21
of whom was your stepfather. The
18:25
spokesman review described the Klein
18:27
family as a multi-generational Spokane
18:29
criminal enterprise that is among
18:32
the most notorious in the
18:34
region's history. That's some
18:36
title. Yeah, obviously they were
18:38
not known for doing
18:41
good deeds. So I'm
18:43
kind of picturing a Spokane
18:45
version maybe of like the
18:47
Genovese crime
18:50
family. Well, criminal
18:52
enterprise and most
18:54
notorious. There you go. Their
18:57
known crimes included petty theft and
18:59
major heist, but it's possible they
19:01
committed murders as well, although
19:03
they were not convicted of killing
19:06
anyone. But that doesn't mean a
19:08
whole lot. You know, if you think about
19:10
some of the more notorious
19:13
crime bosses or families
19:15
throughout history, I mean,
19:17
they got a capone on tax evasion.
19:19
Oh, they did. I mean, people did
19:21
that guy kill or have or
19:24
order to kill. Yeah. Jesse
19:26
Klein was the daughter of Lee and
19:29
Leon Klein. She had six older siblings
19:31
and their parents taught them how to
19:33
steal from a young age. Jesse
19:36
grew up in the 1930s when
19:38
most Americans were experiencing severe
19:40
financial troubles because of the
19:43
Great Depression. Her brother,
19:45
Jay Klein, recalled stealing when he was
19:47
a toddler. Hey, you go into
19:49
that store and put
19:52
some stuff down the front of
19:54
your onesie. Yeah. And if
19:56
they catch you, you just say, I'm a
19:58
toddler. Okay. It kind of reminds me of. of the
20:01
scene from the show Animal Kingdom, when
20:03
they had Pope go, you know, Pope and his
20:05
sister. I never watched it. You kept telling me
20:07
to watch it, and I've never seen it. Oh,
20:09
that's a great show. That's a great series. But
20:12
that kind of reminds me of that. The family
20:14
moved between Spokane and Western
20:16
Montana often, and they
20:19
spent a lot of time camping. They made
20:21
money from selling scrap metal, as
20:23
well as stealing fruit, vegetables, and
20:25
wool from farmers to sell at
20:28
markets. And there's a great
20:30
markup there, Gibbs, when you
20:32
didn't grow it, you didn't build
20:34
it, you're selling something based
20:37
off of someone else's hard work,
20:39
the margin is very, very high.
20:41
Oh yeah, you can do okay
20:44
with that. Jessie actually wrote
20:46
about how her family was one shot
20:48
at when they were stealing produce. None
20:51
of them were shot, but they found bullet
20:53
holes in the bumper of their car. Lila
20:55
told the spokesman review, that's the
20:57
only thing I've ever read or
20:59
ever seen from my mother's perspective
21:01
about her childhood. She didn't write
21:03
much down. She probably had to
21:05
hide things her entire life and
21:07
was just very careful. According
21:10
to the spokesman review, Leon
21:12
Klein wanted to give her children gifts
21:15
for their birthdays and Christmas, but she
21:17
had to steal them because she couldn't
21:19
afford to buy them. She
21:21
also did this for her grandchildren.
21:24
In 1946, two years after
21:26
joining the Merchant Marines, Jay Klein
21:28
and an accomplice were arrested in
21:31
Idaho for stealing a car in $8,000 worth
21:33
of goods in
21:35
a series of burglaries. They
21:37
confessed to stripping the car of its
21:40
parts, chopping it up with an ax
21:42
and dumping the pieces in the Spokane
21:44
River. Deputies found metal splinters
21:46
from the stolen car strewn
21:49
around the farm where they were arrested.
21:51
They used a large powerful magnet to
21:53
recover pieces of the car from the
21:55
river. Well, they definitely had this
21:58
criminal enterprise for sure. I'm thinking
22:00
about $8,000 worth of goods in 1946. That's
22:06
a haul. It definitely was a haul. What
22:08
do you think that would be worth today? Beep
22:10
beep beep boop boop. Yeah, it's like $120,000. Let's
22:13
go with it. Law
22:16
enforcement searched the family farm
22:18
and found stolen tires, fishing
22:20
gear, tools, and car
22:22
parts from years of robberies. So
22:25
it didn't sound like they were all that
22:27
particular about what they stole.
22:29
Oh, I think anything they can get their
22:31
hands on, they figure a way to make money on it eventually.
22:34
Tires, fishing gear, Kootunny
22:37
County Deputy Sheriff Arthur Aikman told
22:39
the spokesman review in 1946, they
22:43
had so much stuff cashed in the
22:45
brush of the Idaho farm, they
22:48
have forgotten where part of it is. You
22:51
know, if you're stealing that much all
22:53
the time, I get it. You know, you're hiding
22:55
it here, hiding it there. And
22:57
then you're like, forgot that you hit a bunch
22:59
of stuff over here. Jay Klein
23:01
was sent to state prison in August
23:03
of that year. Around that
23:06
time, Leon Klein was charged
23:08
with receiving over $15,000 worth of stolen
23:10
goods from
23:12
her brother. Well, that's a serious
23:15
charge. Yeah, absolutely. By
23:17
your calculation, that
23:20
would be what, a couple of
23:23
hundred thousand dollars. Yeah. Now
23:25
we still don't know if that's right, but let's go with it. Jay
23:28
was arrested again in Coeur
23:30
d'Alene, Idaho in 1949 for burglary. He
23:34
ran from the police on foot after
23:36
he abandoned the stolen vehicle and only
23:38
stopped once he was shot at. You
23:41
know, my thought is much easier to run
23:43
away from the police in 1949. I
23:46
believe so. No air support. I
23:49
mean, you're just trying to outrun
23:51
the radio. Well,
23:53
and even the radio was just going to be
23:56
local, right? It's not, I don't know how
23:58
far it was going to go. quickly
24:00
could they be putting out
24:02
an APB that would, you
24:04
know, encompass a large area. Jay
24:07
had stolen three safes from a
24:09
Safeway in Spokane, but he couldn't
24:11
crack them open. And that's
24:13
always a problem. You hear that
24:16
in some of these cases where, you
24:18
know, people run their
24:20
vehicle into like a convenience store
24:23
and then they chain up the ATM and they
24:25
drag it off. Yeah. Have you ever seen that?
24:27
Oh yeah. Yeah. It's actually a big
24:30
thing again now. Is it? Yeah. But
24:33
then sometimes they can't get them open.
24:36
It was a great scene in
24:38
Breaking Bad where
24:40
somebody stole an ATM and
24:42
they had it propped up. They couldn't get it
24:44
open. It fell over and killed him. But yeah.
24:47
Oh yeah. I've seen that. If you haven't seen it,
24:49
you know, yeah, I don't care because that shows old.
24:51
You should have seen it by now. Jay's
24:54
father, his brothers, Lee Jr.
24:56
and Leonard and Robert Peterson,
24:58
Lila's father were arrested in
25:00
Montana in connection with the
25:02
safe burglaries. The police caught
25:05
them in dumping a stolen car in
25:07
a river and covering it with tree
25:09
branches. In a December 1949 article,
25:12
the Spokane Chronicle dubbed the family,
25:15
the Kline gang. The Kline gang.
25:19
Once you get that moniker
25:21
with the word gang after
25:23
your name, you know, you've been up
25:26
to some shady stuff for some period
25:28
of time. Might be a little sketchy. The
25:30
Klines and several accomplices were also believed
25:32
to be part of a crime wave
25:35
that lasted from September 1st to December
25:37
31st, 1949. 37
25:41
people were arrested for burglary,
25:43
larceny and forgery in Spokane.
25:46
Jay served two years in prison
25:48
for participating in this crime spree.
25:51
In February, 1955, the
25:53
Spokane police impounded Jay's
25:55
stolen Buick, Which he
25:57
outfitted with a stolen engine. You
26:00
want his vehicle back? but he had been on
26:02
the run for about a week. And. The
26:04
police had a warrant out for his arrest. He.
26:07
Was able to steal the car
26:09
from the police impound lot. You.
26:11
Hear some balls? The go on to
26:13
the police impound lot and take his
26:15
car back. Yeah. The other thoughts
26:18
have friends or my mind was many
26:20
really wanted this car. Yeah he couldn't
26:22
just saw him another car that wasn't
26:24
in the police impound lot. but yeah
26:26
this is his Buicks. it's is got
26:29
a special stolen engine and ah yes
26:31
I want that car backed. By.
26:33
March nineteen to differ. Jay.
26:36
Was the Spokane Police Departments
26:38
most wanted? man? The. Police
26:40
put out a notice to the public
26:42
with his descriptions, but he was arrested
26:44
until August. I. Guess when you still
26:46
from the police you become. Most.
26:48
Wanted. To pry.
26:51
Two places you don't steal from. The.
26:53
Police. And the mob how
26:55
I was thinking yes, don't still from
26:57
the mumps The police found him and
26:59
Clark Fourth, Idaho. He. Committed the
27:02
greatest series of Sas in
27:04
the city's history. For. The
27:06
Spokane Chronicle Investigative are staking out
27:09
his parents' home. And
27:11
spotted leads and Leone
27:13
Klein leaving Spokane ballots
27:15
in driving towards Idaho
27:17
towing a mobile. That
27:22
are you aware? If
27:24
is not tied down or even have a tie down there
27:26
going to find a way to take it. It's
27:28
like everything they're doing involves
27:31
stealing something. or taking something
27:33
stolen some more. Law.
27:35
Enforcement and Clark for raided
27:37
the family farm and arrested
27:39
Jane, his brother Raul, without
27:41
incident, they had dozens of
27:43
stolen. On. The property. I'll
27:46
do these people and anything. Literally.
27:48
Everything they had the had
27:51
taken from someone else. The.
27:53
police searched three locations in
27:56
eastern washington in idaho they
27:58
found tv said a
28:00
jeep, fences, car
28:03
parts, law enforcement owned
28:05
saddles, sewing machines, and
28:08
even a bulldozer. Who
28:10
steals fences? Well, you know what?
28:12
They're probably pretty expensive back then. Probably worth a lot
28:15
of money. I mean, they're expensive today. They
28:17
also found the detective's radio, which
28:19
is how Jay was able to
28:22
evade arrest for months. One
28:24
of the search locations was Bob
28:26
Peterson's 60 acre ranch.
28:29
Peterson was convicted of possessing
28:31
stolen property. He also
28:33
confessed to stealing six cars
28:36
and 40 hay bales from a farmer's
28:38
field. One detective told
28:40
the Spokane Chronicle that the
28:42
arrests could help resolve burglaries
28:45
all the way to Wyoming.
28:47
People went to the police each day
28:49
with questions about their stolen items that
28:52
they thought the Clines had taken. This
28:54
is a multi state crime
28:57
spree. It's a big enterprise. Yeah,
29:00
it really is. Jay Cline admitted to
29:02
stealing 21 cars, six
29:05
safes, three house trailers,
29:07
and many smaller items.
29:09
He blamed the lack of supervision
29:12
and his choice of friends, saying in
29:14
court, when I get out this time,
29:17
I'm going to associate with the right
29:19
kind of friends like Detective
29:21
Al Stoser, for one. This
29:24
time when I get out, I'm going
29:26
to change. So my BS
29:28
meter just went through the roof. Oh yeah. I'm
29:31
going to associate with the right kind
29:33
of friends like a detective, like
29:36
this detective wants to be friends with you.
29:38
Exactly. Jay pleaded guilty and
29:40
was sent back to prison. He
29:42
served seven and a half years and
29:45
got married soon after he was released.
29:47
He and his wife, Phyllis, didn't talk
29:49
about his time in prison and he
29:52
continued spending time with his troublesome family
29:54
members. Phyllis told the spokesman
29:56
review, Jay was always so good to me
29:58
and to the kids. that it was
30:01
just one of those things that was part of
30:03
our life. Oh, dad got caught
30:05
again, boys and girls. We're seeing him in
30:07
about seven years. Which doesn't seem
30:09
like a lot for one of the greatest
30:11
crime sprees in the history of that part
30:13
of the country. It really does seem pretty
30:15
minimal. Not to mention the fact that
30:17
he'd already done time before, just a
30:20
couple of years, and he
30:22
continued stealing. For example, he once stole
30:24
a Ford Thunderbird and put the engine
30:26
into her car so she could drive
30:28
to Beauty City. He stole
30:31
cars, tools, and building materials
30:33
for his friend. I
30:36
never thought about that, but it is kind of smart,
30:38
I guess, to steal a
30:40
car, take the engine out, part
30:43
the car, and then put the
30:45
engine, which I'm sure was better
30:47
than whatever engine she had in her car,
30:50
into that, and then, bam, you got
30:52
a better car. That's right. Not
30:54
telling anybody to do that, obviously. A
30:56
little harder today to do it, but yeah.
30:59
Yeah, a little more computerized, right, today.
31:02
Jesse Klein was not implicated in
31:04
the series of burglaries, but Lila
31:06
believes her mother was arrested for
31:08
shoplifting around this time. Lila's
31:11
father, Bob Peterson, got out of prison
31:13
in 1959 after
31:15
serving four and a half years. The
31:18
family's criminal records are so well documented
31:21
because Leon Klein
31:23
kept the newspaper clippings that
31:25
detailed their arrests and sentencing
31:28
hearings. Most people have
31:30
pictures of family camping trips
31:32
and Disney
31:34
World, the Grand Canyon. Yeah,
31:37
birthdays, holidays, notebooks, graduations, all
31:40
that. No, they had a
31:42
scrapbook full of their crimes,
31:45
arrests, sentences. Jesse's
31:48
relationship with her husband Bob was described as
31:51
on again, off again. They got married in
31:53
1948 when Jesse was 18 years old. They
31:58
filed for divorce in 1955. and
32:00
the divorce was granted in 1957. Lila was born in 1958 when her
32:02
father was still
32:07
in prison. That same year the
32:10
couple filed for a second marriage
32:12
license. Okay we made a mistake we
32:15
were only married for a couple of years we got
32:18
a little hasty we decided the divorce we're
32:20
giving it a second shot. It
32:22
happens. Lila grew up on
32:24
her father's ranch on Brown Mountain south
32:27
of Spokane this is the
32:29
same area where Alvin Matlock was
32:31
living before he disappeared. Lila
32:33
said that her father worked the land
32:35
drove a truck for a living and
32:38
pursued a music career on the
32:40
side. She never knew he was
32:42
a criminal and that her childhood home once
32:45
housed thousands of dollars worth of
32:48
stolen goods. Her mother was
32:50
equally as secretive as her father.
32:52
She never attended any large gatherings
32:54
with her extended family. Lila
32:57
told the spokesman review that she
32:59
was happily oblivious to her family's
33:01
past. Her sister Liz was born in
33:03
1960 and the
33:06
family moved away from Brown Mountain. Jesse
33:08
and Bob divorced a second time
33:10
around 1965. Lila
33:13
doesn't know why they chose to end the
33:15
marriage. Jesse married a man
33:17
named Don Folkman around 1966. He
33:21
had two sons from a previous marriage
33:23
named Spike and Mike. They kind of
33:25
rhyme. Yeah they do rhyme. Yeah
33:27
Spike and Mike. That's almost what you would
33:29
name like a your son
33:32
Anna maybe a dog. Yeah yeah
33:34
Spike is kind of a
33:36
strange name really if you think about it. Don't
33:39
hear very often. Dogs? Yeah. You
33:41
don't hear a lot of kids
33:43
named Spike. Not for their real
33:45
name. No nickname.
33:48
Don worked in Spokane Washington but
33:51
soon purchased a business called Emerald
33:53
Cleaners in Wallace Idaho and moved
33:56
the family to Osburn Idaho to
33:58
be closer to work. work. Within
34:01
a couple of years, they moved to Wallace.
34:03
As a teenager, Lila stopped going
34:05
places with her mom and sister
34:07
because she was angry about how
34:09
often they stole things and she
34:11
didn't want to be involved in
34:13
their petty crimes. She recalled, she
34:16
thought it was a great sport. She
34:18
used to take us down to the
34:20
little drug store or something and in
34:22
essence was training us to get a
34:24
five finger discount. I realized what she
34:26
was doing wasn't right and I just
34:28
wouldn't go with them anymore. Isn't
34:31
that funny you know
34:33
mom training you to shoplift?
34:36
And the daughter is
34:38
the one realizing that it's wrong.
34:41
The mom's totally fine with
34:43
it. Lila said she started to
34:45
become more independent which caused her mom
34:47
and stepdad to stop paying attention to
34:50
her. Her parents moved to Hayden, Idaho
34:52
during her senior year of high school
34:54
but Lila lived with a friend. A
34:57
few years after she graduated high school,
35:00
she noticed that Jesse and
35:02
Don's relationship was deteriorating. Then
35:04
on August 7th, 1980, her sister
35:06
called her in the middle of the
35:08
night and told her she had to
35:10
go to Don's business as soon as
35:12
possible because something terrible had happened. Don
35:15
had been shot twice in the back
35:17
of the head while he was sleeping
35:20
in the apartment above his store in
35:22
Kellogg, Idaho. Jesse was home
35:24
at the time and she ran to
35:26
the police station when she discovered her
35:28
husband's body. She claimed a burglar
35:30
broke in while she was in the
35:32
bathroom. This story seemed
35:35
unbelievable and there was talk
35:37
that Don was having an affair and that
35:39
he and Jesse were about to get a
35:41
divorce. Jesse received 1.4 million
35:44
dollars from Don's estate and life
35:46
insurance policy. Back in 1980. That
35:49
is a boatload of money. It
35:51
is. I mean if you've got
35:53
life insurance today of over a
35:55
million dollars, that's a good
35:58
policy. It is. Depending on how much much
36:00
you make, but back then
36:02
that is a boatload. Don's
36:04
son Spike filed a wrongful death
36:06
suit against Jesse because he believes
36:08
she killed his father. Spike
36:10
won the lawsuit, but the spokesman
36:12
review didn't provide details of how
36:14
much money he received. So
36:17
that's pretty interesting that in
36:19
civil court they believed him. Yes, but
36:21
you know, she wasn't charged, even
36:24
though it didn't sound as though the police really
36:27
believed her story, I'm assuming
36:30
they just thought they didn't have enough to
36:32
really charge her. Court
36:34
documents seem to confirm the rumors
36:36
about Don's death. Don moved
36:38
out to live with his mistress for periods
36:41
of time. At the time of
36:43
his death, he was deciding if he was
36:45
going to move in with her permanently. Okay,
36:48
you could understand why maybe
36:50
that wouldn't make Jesse very
36:52
happy. No, because that means she'll
36:54
probably be cut off from all
36:56
that money. And you know who you don't
36:58
want to make unhappy? Somebody from
37:00
the Klein family. Somebody from
37:02
this notorious Klein family gang.
37:04
Yeah. Who has, you know,
37:07
all these brothers and sisters and uncles
37:09
who seemingly are willing
37:11
to do just about anything. Really,
37:15
anything. A scientist determined
37:17
that the bullet fragments found at
37:19
the crime scene match the shells
37:21
in the drawer under Jesse and
37:23
Don's bed. One of their guns
37:25
was missing from the house when Don was killed. In
37:28
her statement, Jesse said Don gave her
37:30
the gun as a present and
37:32
that she had fired a test shot earlier
37:34
in the day. Investigators seem to
37:36
believe her story, even when she told them
37:38
the gun went missing on the day of
37:41
the murder. I don't know if that would fly
37:43
today. I don't think it should
37:45
have flown back then either. I'm trying
37:47
to wrap my head around this test
37:49
shot that was fired earlier
37:51
in the day. Was this
37:53
fired outside or inside?
37:56
Because the bullet fragments
37:58
were found at the crime scene. So
38:00
let's do a test shot while we're in this apartment
38:03
above my store. Yeah,
38:05
that's that I wasn't sure about that. I'm sure
38:07
it was probably done outside, but then I don't
38:09
know how that really factors in.
38:12
Additionally, the court found that a burglar
38:14
shooting dock was too improbable to be
38:17
true per the spokesman review.
38:20
The shooter would have had to enter
38:22
the apartment through a high level window,
38:24
not disturb any furniture or other
38:26
items and get into the bedroom
38:29
without Jesse seeing or hearing. Then
38:32
leave without stealing anything
38:34
besides some, but not
38:36
all of the money in Don's wallet.
38:39
Okay, so when we talk about the
38:41
court finding this
38:43
improbable, it does sound improbable.
38:47
I mean, just take stealing some
38:49
of the money out of a man's
38:51
wallet after you've shot him. If
38:54
you've gone to the links of
38:56
shooting a man dead and
38:59
then you open up his wallet, why
39:01
would you just take some? You've
39:03
already committed the cardinal sin.
39:06
You might as well just take all the money and go.
39:08
Fair it out. Jesse was never
39:10
arrested or convicted of Don's murder
39:13
in criminal court. After
39:15
the lawsuit, Jesse married a
39:17
man named Tom Lane, who was described
39:19
as a family friend with a criminal
39:21
record. I think you had to
39:23
have a criminal record to be
39:25
a family friend of the clients.
39:28
I think that was a prerequisite. Yeah, I don't
39:30
think you could have been anything but that. You
39:32
can't have been on the straight and narrow. Tom
39:35
died in February 1982, a year
39:37
after getting married to Jesse. It
39:40
was determined that he died of
39:42
natural causes. I don't know. That
39:45
might be one that would
39:47
have been worth looking into. I don't know
39:49
if they ever did. Lila
39:51
was no longer on speaking terms
39:54
with her mother at this point,
39:56
but she continued visiting her father,
39:58
Bob Peterson, until he... died in
40:01
1986. In the early 2000s,
40:03
her sister Liz called her and
40:06
told her information that changed her
40:08
whole view of her childhood.
40:10
Robert Peterson was not Lila's
40:13
father. Don Folkman molested
40:16
Liz when she was a young girl
40:19
and finally their mother, Jesse,
40:21
killed Don. And Liz
40:23
helped her do it. That's a
40:25
lot of disturbing news. Yeah, well,
40:27
when you say it's news that changes
40:30
the whole view of your childhood,
40:33
that type of news would. Lila
40:35
tried to ignore everything Liz told
40:37
her and Liz died within a
40:40
year of making her confession. She
40:42
passed away from complications of alcoholism.
40:45
Lila thought that the sexual
40:47
abuse caused Liz to start drinking at
40:49
a young age. Lila went through difficult
40:51
times over the next decade. At one
40:53
point, she was homeless and living in
40:55
a tent in a friend's backyard, but
40:57
she saved up enough to rent a
40:59
house in Spokane. In 2012, a
41:03
woman named Patricia Matlock showed up to
41:05
her address. She said she
41:08
was looking for Bob or Jesse
41:10
Peterson. She explained that
41:12
her brother, Alvin Buddy Matlock,
41:14
went missing back in 1951
41:17
and that Bob or Jesse were the
41:19
last ones to see him alive. Patricia
41:21
explained how there was speculation, that
41:24
Jesse was having an affair with
41:26
Alvin and that Jesse shot
41:28
Alvin when he got into an
41:30
argument with Bob. In the
41:32
days after Alvin went missing, Bob
41:35
Peterson was reportedly seen covered in
41:37
bruises. He was the one
41:39
who told Marie Matlock, Alvin's
41:42
mother, that Alvin moved to Alaska.
41:44
So we're finally coming full circle here with this
41:47
tie-in. Yeah, it took us a little
41:49
while to get back around.
41:52
You know, there were these rumors
41:54
that Alvin was having an affair
41:57
and that the
41:59
woman's husband, found out. Well
42:02
Patricia is saying that
42:05
that speculation was that he was
42:07
having an affair with Jesse and
42:09
Bob was the jealous
42:12
husband and Jesse shot Alvin
42:14
when he was in an argument with Bob. Patricia
42:17
told Lila that she and her
42:19
husband Clyde had been investigating Alvin's
42:22
disappearance since 2009. Patricia
42:25
said that everyone knows who
42:27
killed Alvin and it was
42:29
just a matter of time until his body was
42:31
found. Patricia believes the
42:33
Petersons buried Alvin in his car
42:35
with help from a friend who
42:37
owned a tractor. Well if you
42:40
think about it it sounds like they probably
42:42
had everything they needed. They had stolen
42:44
a bulldozer. Oh say if they didn't have it then
42:46
then they would just go steal it. Yeah just take
42:48
what they need. According to Patricia
42:51
she and Clyde went to talk to
42:53
Jesse after Lila gave them her address
42:55
but they were too nervous to ask
42:57
her about Alvin. Jesse talked
42:59
about her disputes with her ex-husband
43:01
Don. When Lila talked to her uncle
43:04
Jake Klein in early 2014 he said Bob and Jesse
43:09
burned Alvin's body in their furnace
43:11
at their home on Brown Mountain.
43:13
He also told her that Liz allegedly
43:16
dumped the gun used to kill
43:18
Don into a paint bucket and
43:20
threw it into the Coeur d'Alene
43:23
River. Jesse told him about the
43:25
murder because she was
43:27
concerned about testing positive for
43:29
gunshot residue. According to
43:31
the spokesman review in early
43:34
2019 the police in Kellogg,
43:36
Idaho told the Shoshone News
43:39
Press that they determined Jesse
43:41
killed Don Folkman. No
43:43
surprise there. No I mean the story
43:46
was so unbelievable.
43:48
Unfortunately there doesn't seem to be
43:51
any hard evidence that would implicate
43:53
Jesse or Bob Peterson and Alvin's
43:55
disappearance and presumed murder but you'd
43:58
have to say Gibbs they make... pretty
44:00
good potential suspect. I think they
44:03
make really good suspects. I
44:05
think if Alvin
44:08
and Jesse were really having
44:10
an affair, because there was this
44:12
rumor that Alvin was having an
44:14
affair with a married woman. If
44:16
it really was Jesse, then I
44:18
think it's likely very
44:20
probable that Jesse
44:24
and most likely Bob were
44:26
responsible for Alvin's death. And
44:29
I'm sure there were some other family
44:31
members who probably were involved, helped bury,
44:34
helped burn, helped clean it up. Right.
44:36
Who knows? So hide it. Alvin
44:38
would be 93 years old if
44:40
he was still alive today. His
44:43
disappearance is the oldest missing
44:45
persons case in Spokane. In
44:48
2013, police representatives told
44:50
the news outlet KHQ
44:52
that missing persons cases
44:54
remain open until the body
44:57
is found or the missing person
44:59
is found alive. If the person
45:01
is not found within a year, the
45:03
police continue to follow up on the
45:05
case every three months, unless they receive
45:07
new evidence. If you
45:09
have any information about the disappearance
45:12
of Alvin Madlock, you can call
45:14
the Spokane County Sheriff's Office at
45:16
509 477-2240. So
45:22
I thought this was a very
45:24
interesting case. You know, you have
45:26
this Klein family. A gang
45:29
really committing crimes in
45:32
multiple states. You
45:34
have this guy, Alvin Madlock, who
45:36
goes missing. His family is
45:38
told that he's moved to Alaska.
45:41
Yeah. Well, many years
45:43
later, it starts to
45:45
come out that Jesse
45:47
and Bob Peterson were maybe
45:50
the last people to see
45:52
Alvin alive. If Bob
45:55
was the one who told the
45:57
Madlock family that Alvin went to
45:59
Alaska. I think that's
46:01
pretty damning if Jesse
46:04
was the woman that Alvin was
46:06
having the affair with I
46:08
think that's pretty damning when you
46:11
think about all the rumors and
46:13
Speculations that there was this affair
46:15
the husband got mad Alvin
46:18
died as a result There's a lot
46:21
of smoke there There's a whole lot of smoke and
46:23
if both of those things are true it just you know compounds
46:28
things very interesting Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
46:30
I mean, I think the one thing
46:33
that is certain to me is
46:35
that Alvin Matlock never went to
46:37
Alaska No, and
46:40
I think his family knew that he
46:42
probably wasn't going to miss You
46:44
know Thanksgiving dinner if he could help it
46:47
and he wasn't gonna go to Alaska
46:49
and then never Contact his family ever
46:51
again. I think he just got mixed
46:53
up with the wrong woman. Yeah
46:56
I mean, that's what it sounds like. We don't
46:58
know for sure, but that's it for
47:00
our episode on Alvin
47:02
Matlock we had some voicemails Gibbs you
47:04
want to check those out. Let's hear Hi,
47:07
Mike and Gibby. My name is Navea
47:10
Hone and I'm from Wilbur, Nebraska. I
47:13
am listening to your unsolved
47:16
case of the severed feet mystery
47:19
and I
47:21
just wanted to leave a voicemail on
47:23
this specific video because you guys mentioned
47:25
that One of
47:27
the bodies was found in Kitsap
47:30
County in Bremerton, Washington, and I'm
47:32
actually moving there in May So
47:35
thank you guys for making me nervous for
47:37
moving there I Also
47:41
wanted to do a recommended case
47:43
on something that happened in Wilbur,
47:45
Nebraska It is the
47:47
Sydney Loof case and I think
47:49
you guys would find it very
47:51
interesting. There's a lot of crazy
47:54
information But
47:56
if you guys look into that case, I think you guys
47:58
would have a lot of fun doing
48:01
that one on your guys's podcast. It
48:03
is sold. And
48:05
that's all I have to say. I
48:07
enjoy your guys's podcast so much. I've
48:10
been listening to it for about a
48:12
year. And Team Giphy, keep your own
48:14
time ticking. Thanks guys, bye. Well,
48:16
thank you for that. And Team Giphy.
48:19
He never heard that before, have you? That's new,
48:21
but I love it. I do like that. Maybe
48:23
it can become a trend. I love her first
48:25
name. Yeah, I do too. That is very cool.
48:29
Going to Washington. Hey, this case was
48:32
Washington. I don't
48:34
think you have anything to worry about in
48:37
Bremerton. Now,
48:39
that doesn't mean don't keep your head on a swivel,
48:41
but I think you'll be OK. And
48:44
keep an eye out for Sasquatch. That
48:46
may be the only thing. Yeah, he roams up in that
48:48
area. That may be the only thing you have to worry
48:51
about. Hi guys, my name
48:53
is Jude. I've been following you guys for,
48:56
oh god, years and years now. I
48:58
just love you guys. Nobody really has
49:00
the vibe like you guys. It
49:03
just has a lot of dad feelings to it.
49:05
And as someone who lost their dad about 10
49:07
years ago, every time I'm missing
49:09
him a little bit too much, I pop you guys
49:11
on. And it just makes me feel like I have
49:13
a dad around. I don't know how else to explain
49:15
it. You guys are so great. So
49:18
yeah, just keep up the good work and stay
49:21
safe. Keep your own time ticking. And I love you
49:23
guys. Oh, that was such a
49:25
nice voicemail. It was. Sorry for your
49:27
loss. Sorry about
49:29
that. I mean, we're more than
49:32
happy to take on the dad
49:34
moniker. We
49:36
are dads. We enjoy being dads.
49:39
We do. Again, like
49:41
we always say, if there's any little
49:44
way that we help somebody, that's
49:46
pretty cool. When I often,
49:49
people try to sing that song, Hey Jude, to you.
49:51
I bet a lot. Why don't you try it right now? Once
49:54
you hit us with a few bars,
49:56
that's a negative,
49:58
goes right. I
50:01
knew you wasn't one
50:04
of these days. How long have we been
50:06
doing this show? Seven years. It'll
50:08
be seven years. No, it'll be eight years
50:10
this year. You're going to have
50:12
to sing a little song. People
50:15
don't realize that you've
50:17
been called the songbird of your
50:19
generation. That's true. And you're very
50:21
much like Will Ferrell in that
50:24
movie Step Brothers. Or
50:26
I'm like Alfalfa from the,
50:28
yeah, little rascals. It could sound like that
50:30
as well, but people need
50:32
to find out one way or the
50:34
other. Exactly. All right. That is it
50:37
for another episode of True Crime All
50:39
The Time Unsolved. So for Mike, stay
50:41
safe and keep your own time picking.
