We wrap up the first season of the show with a chat about pancakes. We reminisce about eating our favorite hotcakes at the iconic Pamela’s Diner in Pittsburgh, where we recently took a family trip to watch our favorite pro sports teams. We discuss pancakes’ many forms across the globe and what entices us — pancake skeptics — to eat them.
Special No. 1: The world’s largest pancake, created in Manchester in the U.K. in 1994, measured 49 feet in diameter and weighed 6,614 pounds — more than the average hippo.

Special No. 2: McDonald’s sales rose 11% in the months after it debuted the McGriddle — a breakfast sandwich that uses pancakes as the bread — in 2003.

Special No. 3: Artists use pancake batter as a medium:
Special No. 4: In 2015, a judge dismissed a $3 billion lawsuit filed by two men who claimed to be the heirs to the fortune of Anna Short Harrington, who posed as Aunt Jemima for the brand. The judge said they failed to prove they were Harrington’s heirs. Regardless of the suit, Aunt Jemima is an example of racism and cultural appropriation in the food world.

During our Pittsburgh trip earlier this month, we saw games for two of our favorite sports teams, the Penguins and the Steelers. We ended our trip with crêpe-style hotcakes from Pamela’s Diner.

Pittsburgh is one of our favorite cities, so reach out to us if you’re headed there and need recommendations!
Research suggests that pancakes originated in the Stone Age approximately 30,000 years ago. Today, variations include okonomiyaki, hotteok, crêpes and latkes.
One of JuJu’s favorite pancakes is from Walker Bros. in Wilmette, Illinois. The German Pancake — or a smaller version called the Dutch Baby — is an oven-baked treat topped with powdered sugar and fruit.
