Faqih (Jurist) Abul Layth al-Samarqandi (Rahmatullâhi Alayhi) said: “Whoever visits an Alim (Islamic scholar) and sits with him, there are seven blessings for him, even if he is unable to acquire the knowledge taught:
He attains the honour of being a Talibul Ilm (Seeker of knowledge).
He spends time away from sins and errors as long as he is in the company.
Rahmah (Divine Mercy) descends upon him from the moment he leaves his home until he reaches the gathering of ilm (knowledge).
The special Rahmah (Divine Mercy) that descends upon Ulama (Islamic Scholars) also descends upon him when he sits in the gathering of ilm due to the lecture.
Rewards are recorded for him as long as he listens to the speech.
Angels spread their wings out of their reverence upon the seekers of knowledge, so they also spread their wings upon him as he is present there with the learners.
Every step he takes while going to and returning from the gathering of ilm becomes an expiation for his sins elevates his rank and increases his merits.
These are all for the person attending a gathering of ilm who can not learn what is taught there. As for those who learn something (the seekers of knowledge), there are innumerable rewards.
