The following episode involves scenes of sexual

0:02

abuse that some may find disturbing. Parental

0:05

discretion is advised. There

0:17

was once a place deep in the rural

0:19

hinterland of Bavaria in southern Germany,

0:23

Positioned half a kilometer to the west

0:25

of the village of Grubon. It sat

0:28

quiet and still alone in the

0:30

fields, surrounded by thick

0:32

pine forest. A farmhouse

0:35

made of stone and painted white.

0:38

The farm, known as hinter Kaifek,

0:41

had passed through many hands over the years,

0:44

all of which had, at one time or another

0:46

worked the rich, dark earth that

0:49

surrounded it, sewing

0:51

it, tilling it, and pulling

0:53

from it. Fingers plunged

0:55

deep into the black of it, and

0:58

all had, in one way or another, left

1:00

a piece of themselves in it too. By

1:04

eighteen eighty six, the property had

1:06

been passed to Cecilia Assam and

1:08

Andreas Gruber, the pair

1:11

having taken ownership of it shortly after

1:13

the death of Cecilia's first husband,

1:15

Joseph, for Cecilia

1:18

left to run the farm and raise two

1:20

young children alone. Andreas

1:23

was an apt partner, a farm

1:25

laborer with an intense and quiet disposition.

1:28

His hands were strong and his shoulders

1:31

broad enough for them all, not

1:33

that Cecilia's weren't also, and

1:36

so in April eighteen eighty six, Cecilia

1:39

Assam became Cecilia Gruber,

1:42

and together she and Andreas

1:44

worked the farm and the surrounding fields,

1:47

maintaining a fine and stable business.

1:51

In eighteen eighty seven, new life

1:53

arrives in the form of a baby girl named

1:56

Victoria. She is joined

1:58

by Sophie two years later, and

2:01

for those first few years joy

2:03

threatens to reign a hint kaifek, But

2:06

the joy is short lived. Like

2:09

almost twenty percent of children in

2:11

the local district at the time, Sophie

2:14

does not live to see her second birthday.

2:17

And now a cloud is descending over

2:19

this stark white property, cast

2:22

a drift from the nearby town and

2:25

seeming to move further away with each

2:27

passing day, the forests

2:29

surrounding it seeming to grow ever

2:31

denser, and the trees looming

2:34

ever taller. It

2:37

is a natural habit of humans to project

2:39

onto all that we see, and no more

2:42

so than with our interpretations of the

2:44

forest. For

2:46

some, the forest is foreboding

2:48

a locusts for unknown dangers that

2:51

lurk deep within. But

2:53

the forest does not think itself foreboding

2:56

the forest just is, And

2:59

yet for hinter Kaifek, it

3:01

is hard not to read those tall, thick

3:04

pines that surrounded the farm,

3:06

and the gloom of the forest beyond, as

3:08

some kind of psychic projection emanating

3:11

from the darkness festering inside

3:14

that white stone building, a

3:16

darkness that would one day come

3:18

to define that land in more ways

3:21

than one. How

3:23

fitting too that the patch of woodland

3:26

closest to the farm should be called

3:28

hex and Holtz, or the

3:30

Witch's forest, the notion

3:32

of the witch often being just a projection

3:35

of our own innate fears of the other, but

3:38

also two, as woman's suffragist

3:40

Matilda Josly Engage once noted,

3:44

the fear of women. But

3:46

perhaps it isn't just fear that manifests

3:49

this patriarchal image of the malevolent

3:52

witch, but guilt too.

3:56

You're listening to Unexplained, and

3:58

I'm Richard McClean smith.

4:08

The couple looked happy enough as they

4:10

stood reciting their vows under

4:12

the watchful eyes of the priest. As

4:15

they stepped out of the church arm in arm.

4:17

Some say, for a brief moment, the

4:20

clouds above parted and a ray

4:22

of sunshine slipped through. Perhaps

4:25

the bride are now twenty six year

4:27

old Victoria saw it too,

4:30

and perhaps for a moment there was even

4:33

the hint of a smile as she looked

4:35

into the eyes of her new husband, Carl

4:37

Gabriel, and saw there

4:40

the hope of a better future, a

4:42

future safe from harm

4:44

and full of warmth for the child that

4:46

would surely come. But

4:49

such thoughts were never kept long in her

4:51

mind before the sight of her father,

4:53

Andreas Gruber dissolved them

4:56

instantly, that unmoving,

4:58

impassive face, ever

5:01

present, always watching

5:04

the sight of him, never failing to catch

5:06

in her throat, congealing like

5:08

thick black tar. There

5:12

had long been rumors about the man, about

5:15

how he regularly beat his wife, Cecilia,

5:18

now sixty four years old and nine

5:20

years his senior, but

5:22

that wasn't all. It

5:25

was said to be common knowledge amongst the local

5:27

farming community and in the village

5:29

of Grubon de Tandreas

5:32

regularly raped his daughter, although

5:35

it wasn't called rape at the time.

5:38

Perhaps Carl knew this too when he

5:41

married Victoria, and perhaps

5:43

there was a hope that their marriage might put

5:45

an end to the abuse. Or

5:47

perhaps, as some have suggested the

5:50

union was more pragmatic than that

5:52

that it merely offered a buffer for Victoria

5:55

and an opportunity for Karl and

5:57

indeed the wider Gabriel family

6:00

to gain access to a successful, if

6:02

modest business. Only

6:05

a month before their wedding, Andreas

6:07

transferred all the rights to the farm to his

6:10

daughter, making her the sole

6:12

heir to the property. By

6:14

marrying Victoria, Carl had guaranteed

6:17

that any children of theirs would inherit

6:19

the land. But

6:22

for some possessions,

6:24

or at least what they consider to be their

6:26

possessions, are not so easy

6:29

to let go of, and no matter

6:31

where they turned nor what time

6:33

of day, there would be Andreas,

6:36

who, along with Cecilia, remained living

6:38

at the property, standing watch

6:41

stone, faced deep in thought.

6:50

Barely weeks after the wedding, Carl

6:52

moved back home to his parents,

6:55

complaining that he was being bullied and

6:57

that the fierce and uncompromising Andreas

7:00

had even taken to starving him. But

7:03

just as Andreas cast his shadow

7:05

over hinter kaifek So two

7:07

were other larger shadows being

7:09

steadily drawn across the land. In

7:13

late June of nineteen fourteen comes

7:15

the news that Archduke Franz Ferdinand,

7:18

heir to the throne of Austria Hungary,

7:20

has been shot dead. The

7:23

rickety, stumbling wheel of human

7:25

civilization takes another lurch

7:27

from the path and wobbles inexorably

7:30

toward war, and so

7:32

the men are summoned by appeals

7:35

to duty and valor. Perhaps

7:38

it is with trepidation that Carl packs

7:40

up the few belongings he'll need and

7:42

marches out of the farm toward Munich

7:44

to sign up, leaving behind

7:46

and now four months pregnant, Victoria.

7:49

Or perhaps at the sight of the stone

7:52

faced Andreas, pausing briefly

7:54

from his work in the field to nod

7:56

goodbye to his son in law, it

7:59

is with relief before

8:02

long. It is December twelfth, nineteen

8:05

fourteen, eight hundred

8:07

kilometers to the northwest of hint Kaifek.

8:10

A crow swoops down above a

8:12

field just north of the town

8:14

of Arras, coming to rest, and what

8:16

remains of an old beech tree in

8:19

the field below, freshly scarred

8:22

and pockmarked by shelling, there

8:24

lies a body, its

8:26

forehead split open and the lower

8:29

jaw obliterated, its

8:31

pale vacant eyes staring

8:33

up toward a slowly darkening sky.

8:37

The crow cause and swoops down

8:40

for closer inspection, but a

8:42

hand quickly shoes it away. Joseph

8:45

Bickler, a farmer from vadeh

8:47

Hoffen, a town close to Gruben, stands

8:50

over the body, recognizing it

8:52

instantly as that of his old school

8:54

friend Carl Gabriel. The

8:58

following week, back at hinter Kaifek,

9:01

a now heavily pregnant, Victoria watches

9:03

from the window as postal worker

9:06

Joseph Meyer draws near to

9:08

the house. With him,

9:10

he carries a copy of Andreas's regular

9:12

paper and a letter addressed

9:14

to Victoria written by Joseph

9:16

Bickler, informing her of her

9:19

husband's death. But

9:21

Victoria has little time to grieve when

9:24

three weeks later she gives birth to her

9:26

first child, whom she names Cecilia

9:29

after her mother. But

9:31

still the rumors refuse to go away,

9:34

as many in the village are left wandering

9:36

is the child karls or

9:38

is it her father's. At

9:47

some point in early nineteen fifteen, a

9:49

complaint is brought to the local police

9:52

that Andreas was committing incest

9:54

with his daughter. After

9:56

a formal investigation, rumor becomes

9:58

fact when on May twenty eighth,

10:00

Andreas is convicted for the offense,

10:03

with the court deciding to limit the period

10:05

of the crime to the year's nineteen oh seven

10:08

to nineteen ten, when Victoria

10:10

was aged twenty to twenty three.

10:13

This was most likely an arbitrary decision

10:16

to avoid looking into accusations that

10:18

it had in fact been going on much

10:20

longer than that, and thereby allowing

10:22

Andreas the opportunity to escape

10:25

the accusation of child abuse. He

10:27

is sentenced to one year in prison. Such

10:31

was the attitude of the day. Victoria

10:33

was considered to be a willing participant

10:35

in the abuse, and as such was

10:38

also convicted for the crime. On

10:41

January tenth, nineteen sixteen,

10:44

a day after her daughter's first birthday,

10:47

Victoria was taken to Neuburg Prison

10:49

to spend the first of thirty days behind

10:52

bars for

10:54

one relatively blissful year.

10:57

Victoria and her mother Cecilia run

10:59

the farm with help from their maid kretchens

11:02

Raiger. Together, they manage

11:04

all the livestock and harvest the fields.

11:08

On Sundays, Victoria makes the

11:10

short journey to the village of Vaidhoffen

11:12

to attend the trade fair, and on

11:14

occasion joins the church choir

11:17

to sing. She is

11:19

praised widely for her voice and

11:21

is known by the nickname the Lark of

11:23

hinter Kaifek. But

11:26

in February nineteen seventeen, Andreas

11:28

returns, and though Victoria

11:31

continues to sing, something of

11:33

her voice has changed. In

11:36

nineteen eighteen, Victoria

11:38

begins a relationship with Lorenz

11:40

Schlittenbauer, her neighbor from the

11:42

next farm over who is only recently

11:44

widowed. The affair is

11:47

brief, with some blaming the presence

11:49

of Andreas for Lorenz's reluctance

11:51

to pursue the relationship. However,

11:55

by the end of December, Victoria

11:57

discovers she is pregnant again, and

12:00

Lie nineteen nineteen, gives

12:02

birth to a son, whom she names

12:04

Joseph. Now

12:06

a single mother with two young children,

12:09

Victoria is convinced that Lorenz is the

12:11

father and approaches him for financial

12:14

support. In response,

12:16

Lorenz, who suspects the child

12:18

might instead be Andrea's, reports

12:21

her and her father again to the police.

12:24

With Andreas Julia arrested and awaiting

12:27

a second trial, Victoria

12:29

pleads with Lorenz to drop the charge and

12:32

claim paternity of the child to

12:34

help put an end toward the salacious rumors.

12:37

Lorenz later said that despite

12:40

agreeing to the claim, Victoria

12:42

paid him to say it. Meanwhile,

12:45

Cretans, the family's maid, is

12:47

growing increasingly anxious. At

12:50

night, she hears unusual sounds

12:53

in the house and what seemed like

12:55

footsteps moving about the place. Sometimes

12:58

her door even seems to open on

13:01

its own accord. One

13:03

morning in the summer of nineteen twenty

13:05

one, after pulling up water from

13:08

the well, Kretchians is walking

13:10

across the courtyard when she hears a

13:12

strange noise coming from the barn, unlike

13:14

any of the usual animal cries. Moving

13:18

slowly into the barn, she catches

13:20

sight of something in the corner and recoils

13:22

in horror. It is Andreas

13:25

raping his daughter, who lies motionless

13:28

underneath him. Kretchians

13:31

leaves the farm the following week. The

13:40

winter of nineteen twenty one is especially

13:42

cruel, with freezing temperatures

13:44

lasting well into the following year. By

13:47

mid March, there is still no end

13:49

in sight, with frost and snow

13:52

a frequent occurrence. One

13:54

gray afternoon, Victoria is

13:56

walking across the courtyard when she

13:59

is distracted by a movement to the south.

14:02

Looking up, she can just make out

14:04

a lone figure standing at the edge

14:06

of which is wood, that appears to

14:08

be watching her. Looking

14:10

away for a moment, she turns back

14:13

to find that the figure has gone. A

14:16

few days later, when postal worker

14:18

Joseph Meyer arrives at the property,

14:21

he has met by Andreas waving a

14:23

paper around a damp

14:25

and muddy copy of the munich Zeitung.

14:28

He'd found it while out in the field, close

14:31

to which is wood. He wants

14:33

to know if Joseph has dropped it, perhaps,

14:36

but Joseph has never seen it before, and

14:38

neither has he ever delivered one like it. Whosevers

14:42

it was, he suggests, was not local

14:45

to the area. It

14:47

is early in the morning of March twenty ninth

14:50

when Andreas is disturbed from bed

14:52

by what sounds like footsteps

14:54

shuffling about in the attic above. Grabbing

14:58

his rifle and a flashlight, he

15:00

makes his way through the darkness toward

15:02

the attic stairs and climbs

15:05

up into the opening above, each

15:07

step creaking as he goes. Pointing

15:11

the light into the roof, he could

15:13

see the whole attic stretched out in

15:15

both directions, empty

15:17

save for some old patches of straw that

15:20

were scattered about, and the pieces

15:22

of meat hanging in the smoke house above

15:24

the kitchen. On

15:26

the morning of Thursday, March thirtieth,

15:29

Andreas heads toward the engine room,

15:32

where much of the farmer's heavy equipment

15:34

is kept. The room is located

15:37

at the southwest tip of the L shaped

15:39

farm, tacked on to the end of

15:41

the barn. The snow

15:44

is still thick on the ground as Andreas

15:46

approaches, to find that the padlock

15:48

on the door is missing. What's

15:51

more, there are two sets of footprints

15:53

in the snow leading inside

15:56

the building, but none coming

15:58

out. A confused

16:01

Andreas stares down at the tracks

16:04

and then up toward which is wood

16:06

where they seem to have come from.

16:09

Andrea shouts for whoever is inside

16:11

to come out, but there is no reply.

16:15

Pulling the door open, he's relieved

16:17

to find the place completely deserted and

16:19

everything as he'd left it. Later,

16:22

however, he will find one of his

16:24

two house keys has gone missing.

16:31

17:58

Later that night, after a violent

18:01

altercation with her husband, Cecilia

18:03

Gruber is found to be missing, prompting

18:06

the rest of the family, including seven

18:08

year old Cecilia, to search or

18:10

knight for her. Concern

18:13

that she may have drowned herself, leads

18:15

the family to the banks of the river par

18:18

a kilometer to the south of the farm, but

18:21

there is no sign of her in the dark, icy

18:23

water. The seventy

18:25

two year old Cecilia is finally

18:28

found sitting silently on a tree

18:30

stump in the forest and is eventually

18:32

coaxed back to the farm. The

18:35

following day, with things appearing

18:38

to have abated, the family are joined

18:40

by forty five year old Maria Baumgartner,

18:43

who arrives accompanied by her sister

18:45

Francisca, to take on the roll

18:48

of a living housemaid. Francisca

18:51

had helped secure the job for her sister, who,

18:54

due to her learning difficulties and the slight

18:56

physical disability of having one leg

18:58

shorter than the other had often struggled

19:01

for work, her most recent

19:03

job in the nearby town of Unterwittelsbach

19:06

having been terminated simply because

19:09

the town's mayor deemed her too unsightly

19:11

for the local community. And

19:14

though Franciska had heard much about

19:16

the Gruber family and what was

19:18

rumored to take place at hint Kaifek,

19:21

it was an opportunity too good to refuse

19:23

for Maria. Even

19:25

still, it was hard not to feel a

19:27

little trepidation when, after

19:30

helping her sister settle in, she

19:32

made her goodbyes and headed out

19:34

of the property. With

19:36

the wind picking up and thick

19:38

storm clouds beginning to gather in

19:40

the sky above, Franciska

19:43

was approaching the main road when she

19:45

heard the voice of her sister calling

19:47

out from behind her. Turning

19:50

round, she saw Maria racing

19:52

toward her for one final good bye

19:54

before they parted. After

19:57

a brief hug, Maria asked

19:59

her sister to visit again soon, then

20:02

turned and headed back to the farm.

20:11

It is late the following night when

20:13

local carpenter Michael Plockell trudges

20:15

past the property and spots a fire

20:18

burning in the outdoor oven and

20:20

smoke billowing out of its chimney.

20:23

Perhaps it was the nauseating smell like

20:26

burnt rags that caused him to

20:28

stop, or perhaps it was just something

20:31

in the quiet of the night. But

20:33

as he stares, he is taken

20:35

aback by the sudden movement of a figure

20:38

stepping into the courtyard. Michael

20:41

watches as the figure slams the

20:43

oven door, shut, points a flashlight

20:45

in his direction, and then begins

20:47

steadily making his way toward

20:50

him, Frozen

20:52

with fear at first, as the figure

20:54

draws closer and closer, Michael

20:57

finally pulls his hands from his pockets

20:59

and speed off in the opposite direction.

21:04

It is two days later when Joseph

21:06

Mayer arrives at the property to deliver

21:09

Andreas's paper, only

21:11

to find the place completely deserted, with

21:14

no sign of Andreas or anyone

21:16

else for that matter, to be found. The

21:19

courtyard unnervingly quiet save

21:22

for the gentle lowing of the cattle coming

21:24

from inside the barn, assuming

21:28

they're out working the field somewhere. Joseph

21:31

leaves the paper on the kitchen window sill and

21:33

heads off to continue his round.

21:37

It is sometime around midday on

21:40

Tuesday, April fourth, when machinist

21:42

Albert Hoffner arrives at hint Kaifek

21:45

to make repairs to the family's threshing

21:47

machine. A

21:49

cold wind whips around him

21:51

as he pulls up to the courtyard gate on

21:54

his bicycle, Surprised to find

21:56

that it's still locked. After

21:58

waiting unsuccessfully for over an hour

22:01

for someone to meet him, Albert

22:03

makes his way to the engine room.

22:05

Grateful to find the lock is broken, he

22:08

lets himself inside and sets

22:10

to work on the machine. Four

22:13

and a half hours later, there is still

22:15

no sign of the family. With

22:18

the work completed, Albert heads

22:20

into the courtyard and notices for

22:22

the first time that the barn door is

22:24

wide open. I'm

22:26

sure if it was before. He moves

22:28

toward it, calling out for Andreas

22:31

or Victoria, but has met

22:33

with only silence. Peering

22:36

into the darkness beyond, he sees

22:38

only the cattle inside and some

22:40

hay piled up in the far corner. Hearing

22:44

the dog suddenly barking manically,

22:46

he wanders round to the front of the house and

22:49

finds it tied up by the front door. Ignoring

22:53

its cries, Albert cups

22:55

his hands over the glass and peers

22:57

inside to the kitchen, but sees

22:59

nothing untoward. Turning

23:02

back, he takes one final

23:04

look at the empty field to the

23:06

stretch of forest beyond, then

23:09

heads off to find his bicycle. It's

23:18

just gone five pm when farmer

23:21

Michael Pearl, another neighbor of

23:23

the Grubers, here's a knock at his

23:25

door. He opens it to

23:27

find a nervous looking Lorenz Schlittenbauer

23:30

and their neighbor Jacob Sig waiting

23:32

for him. After hearing

23:35

about Albert Hoffner's strange experience

23:37

at the farm, Lorenz had grown

23:39

increasingly concerned about the Gruber

23:41

family and his apparent's son Joseph's

23:44

whereabouts. With the young Cecilia

23:47

not having been seen at school since Saturday,

23:51

all was eerily quiet as the three

23:53

men stepped into hint of Kaife's

23:55

deserted courtyard, the silence

23:58

only becoming more deaf when

24:00

their desperate cause for Victoria and

24:02

Andreas brought no reply. Finding

24:06

all doors to the property now completely

24:08

shut and locked up save for the

24:11

engine room, the men made

24:13

their way inside from the back, only

24:15

to find that through door to the barn had

24:18

been deliberately blocked from behind with

24:20

a beam of wood. After

24:22

finally managing to dislodge it, and

24:24

with the light quickly beginning to fade,

24:27

the men carried on into the barn beyond.

24:31

The sudden appearance of a cow wandering

24:33

freely around inside startled

24:36

them momentarily as they continued

24:38

forward into the dark, feeling

24:40

for obstacles with their feet, when

24:43

suddenly Michael cried out,

24:46

Hey, there's something here. Michael

24:50

pulled back and realized with

24:52

horror it was a foot.

24:55

Whoever it was, was lying under a

24:57

large plank of wood that had been put

24:59

on top of them.

25:02

Together, the men pulled the wood to the

25:04

side and revealed the body of

25:06

Andreas Gruber underneath,

25:09

dressed in trousers and undershirt, thickly

25:11

matted with blood and crudely

25:14

covered over with hay. Pulling

25:17

the body out, the men recoiled

25:19

at the sight of its face. The

25:21

right side of it was completely smashed

25:23

in, its cheek, bones clearly

25:25

visible. But then

25:28

Lorenz saw the other limbs, all packed

25:31

underneath together. Pulling

25:33

out one after the other, the men

25:36

revealed the bodies of seven year old Cecilia,

25:39

dressed in her night skirt, her

25:41

mother Victoria, and her mother

25:43

Cecilia, both fully dressed

25:46

and hideously mutilated, their

25:48

clothes and faces black with

25:51

blood. Michael

25:54

and Jacob wretched at the sight of

25:56

them and stumbled back into the courtyard,

25:58

desperate for air. A

26:02

moment later, Lorenz appeared

26:04

in the yard, having opened the front door

26:06

to the main house from inside, and

26:09

beckoned for the other two to help him

26:11

search for his son. They

26:13

found him in the stroller at the foot of Victoria's

26:16

bed, his body partially covered

26:18

with one of Victoria's jackets. He'd

26:20

been killed by a heavy blow to the face. Finally,

26:25

after almost missing her at first, Michael

26:28

noticed a pair of legs peeking out from

26:30

under the bed in the maid's quarters. It

26:34

was Maria, her clothes

26:36

and face also soaked black

26:38

with blood. As

26:41

Michael and Jacob struggled to make sense

26:44

of it all, an eerily calm

26:46

Lawrence returned to Victoria's

26:48

bedroom, and, having found a candle,

26:51

sat down quietly on the bed and

26:54

lit it. Outside.

26:58

All about the and was silent

27:00

and still, save for the gentle

27:03

rustle of wind in the pines and

27:05

the occasional wail of cattle coming

27:07

from that solitary white stone

27:09

building of Hinta Kaife.
