Dante Alighieri's epic poem is a 'comedia' in the classical sense, using the Italian vernacular and an upward-moving storyline. The Divine Comedy's first part, Inferno, features 'contrapasso,' a guiding principle for sin's punishment in which divine justice merges with man's free will.
