There's blood around my mom. But
0:35
my first reaction was like she fell,
0:37
you know, she hit her
0:38
head. I'm
0:40
like, what's wrong, you know, not
0:42
realizing this happened hours
0:45
ago. She wasn't breathing
0:47
or anything and I wasn't
0:49
understanding you know why like things
0:52
were just they weren't registering
0:55
you know I was just seeing them but I wasn't
0:57
understanding what was going on why
1:00
my mom was tied up or you know
1:02
what happened I should
1:05
have known what happened but it was my mom you
1:07
know
1:15
Situated in a working-class Brooklyn
1:18
neighborhood is a group of eight brick apartment
1:20
buildings known as the Bushwick Houses. The
1:24
1,220-unit complex was built by New York City's
1:26
Housing Authority and provides much-needed
1:29
affordable housing for many families in the area.
1:32
Unfortunately, Bushwick also has
1:34
a reputation for attracting more than its fair
1:36
share of criminal activity. In
1:38
May of 2018, on Mother's Day
1:40
weekend, a brutal double homicide
1:43
claimed the lives of two innocent and unlikely
1:45
victims, neighbors in the
1:48
same building. Authorities
1:50
are convinced someone in the community has information
1:52
that can bring the killers to justice, but
1:54
so far, no one has been willing
1:57
to come forward. I'm
2:05
Steve French and
2:06
this is Unsolved Mysteries, Two
2:09
Mother's Day Murders.
2:21
On May 11, 2018, Mireya
2:23
is just getting off work from her job at Brooklyn
2:25
Hospital, where she works the 9-to-5 shift. It's
2:28
two days before Mother's Day, so
2:30
on her way home, she decides to pick up some flowers
2:33
as an early gift for her mother, Anna Delvaie.
2:36
Mireya arrives home at around 6 p.m.
2:38
with a bouquet of roses in her hand, takes
2:41
the elevator, and gets off on the fifth
2:43
floor.
2:46
When
2:49
I get to the door, I'm about
2:51
to open with my key, but it's open. And
2:55
I saw her on the floor. And
2:58
there was like a puddle of blood around
3:00
her. My first reaction
3:03
was like she fell, you know, she hit her head.
3:05
And I grabbed her and I'm
3:07
like trying to, you know, like,
3:10
what's wrong?
3:12
I'm banging
3:12
on her chest, you know, thinking
3:14
like, okay, you know, she's
3:17
gonna be okay. It
3:19
just wasn't registering in my head,
3:21
Dad. My mom wasn't breathing.
3:26
And when, you know, I lifted her up,
3:29
I saw, like, a hole by her ear. And I was
3:31
like, what is this, you know? Like,
3:35
then I noticed that she
3:37
had a hole in her forehead. I didn't
3:39
know what was
3:40
happening. I had never
3:42
seen a gunshot wound, let
3:45
alone my mom like this.
3:51
62-year-old Ana Del Valle is
3:53
dead from gunshot wounds to her head
3:55
and torso. Her hands have been
3:57
tied behind her back with the cord to her electrical cord.
4:00
massager. Overwhelmed by grief
4:02
and shock, Maria can't even process
4:04
what she's seeing. All she can do
4:07
is call 911 and wait anxiously
4:09
for help to arrive.
4:13
My mom was very cheerful, petite,
4:16
about five feet, really,
4:18
really curly hair. She
4:21
loved having the family together.
4:24
She made it a point where she
4:26
would always prepare a home-cooked
4:29
meal. That was her way of showing
4:31
us her love. Ana
4:35
immigrated to New York City in 1983 from
4:37
her native Honduras.
4:39
Starting over in a new country as a single
4:41
mother was a daunting challenge,
4:43
but she was determined to build a better future for
4:45
her three young children.
4:48
She started working in a sweatshop,
4:51
making sweaters. She worked there
4:53
for a couple of years. My
4:56
two brothers and I, we basically
4:59
just went to school while
5:01
she worked. We didn't let us hang
5:03
out much. She was pretty strict with
5:05
us. She wanted us to have
5:08
a better life than what she had to go
5:10
through. She was always there
5:12
for us.
5:16
Ana's kids grew to be responsible adults.
5:19
Her oldest son eventually left the apartment
5:21
to start his own family. while Mariah
5:24
and her twin brother continued to live at home
5:26
with their mother.
5:27
When the factory where Anna worked closed down,
5:29
she began to clean apartments to support her family,
5:32
then
5:32
eventually retired.
5:34
That's when she started enjoying herself.
5:37
She would go to the community center
5:39
that's there right across from the building where we
5:41
lived at. She would do cooking classes,
5:44
knitting, and you know, all types of
5:46
activities.
5:47
She loved keeping busy,
5:49
very lively, very happy.
5:53
In 2018, the Delvayé family
5:55
live in the Bushwick housing complex in Brooklyn.
5:58
Home is a three bedroom apartment. in building
6:00
number seven, unit 5C. The
6:03
building has 13 floors, each
6:05
with about 10 apartments. The Del Valles
6:07
have lived there for nearly 20 years, but
6:10
they aren't close with any of their neighbors. Based
6:12
on what they see going on in the building, they
6:14
just try to keep to themselves.
6:18
Downstairs in the main lobby, there
6:21
would be these young kids
6:23
just hanging around, playing dice. There
6:26
would be smoking weed, selling
6:29
drugs in the hallway, selling drugs in
6:31
the staircase. Anybody would come
6:33
in and out. They didn't necessarily have to
6:35
live there. It was also gangs, you
6:37
could tell. People would hang out in
6:39
groups.
6:40
There were shootings a couple of times. We
6:44
didn't feel 100% safe, but
6:47
unfortunately, that's where we lived at. It
6:51
was May 11th of 2018, and at around 6
6:53
o'clock in the evening, evening,
6:56
I received a call of a female
6:58
found shot in the head inside her apartment.
7:01
At the time, Steve Minucci works
7:03
as a squad detective in the NYPD's
7:05
90th precinct. The Bushwick housing
7:08
complex falls within his jurisdiction. We
7:12
got to the scene within a few minutes
7:14
of the call coming over. There was multiple
7:16
officers on location. One
7:18
of the family members, Maria, who discovered
7:20
Anna, had been removed from the immediate area.
7:25
Upon entering the apartment, we observed Anna
7:28
lying on the floor in a pool of blood,
7:31
at least two visible gunshot wounds, and
7:34
her wrists bound with a wire. An area
7:37
like that, you're going to see every type of call you
7:39
can imagine. Drug-related, occasionally
7:42
gunshots, men or women with firearms,
7:45
domestic violence. This was definitely
7:47
a more brutal fashion of crime than what
7:49
we typically see out there. In this particular
7:52
case, she was retired. She basically
7:54
lived for her family. She
7:55
had no prior criminal history whatsoever.
7:58
obviously as a detective you have to
9:45
Hours
10:01
later, at the crime scene, the
10:03
condition of Anna's body indicates to investigators
10:06
that she's been dead for several hours,
10:08
so it's assumed she was killed shortly after
10:10
speaking with Maraya at 9am.
10:12
A mop found just outside the apartment
10:15
suggests Anna had been cleaning the fifth-floor hallway
10:17
that morning, something she was known to do.
10:20
There are few other clues left behind.
10:22
No signs of force entry, no
10:24
fingerprints, and no murder weapon.
10:28
There was minimal forensic evidence
10:30
from that crime scene. A small amount
10:32
of DNA was recovered. But
10:34
forensically, there was not a great
10:37
deal to go on. She was
10:39
shot three times in the torso and
10:41
had two different caliber bullets, nine
10:44
millimeter and 380. The
10:46
fact that there was two caliber of ammunition found
10:49
would suggest to me that there was at least
10:51
two people kind of controlling the scene. The
10:54
apartment itself was not particularly disheveled.
10:57
No furniture knocked over, didn't look
10:59
like a serious struggle, which to be honest makes
11:01
sense. She was a small older woman. She was probably
11:04
very easily overpowered. The binding
11:06
suggests to me that she was being held
11:08
and threatened possibly to keep her quiet,
11:11
keep her scared. It's indicative
11:13
that it's two or more individuals who simply have
11:15
no regard for human life. With
11:19
few leads to follow, investigators
11:21
begin combing through hours of grainy surveillance
11:24
video from cameras in the lobby and elevator.
11:26
Dozens of people are seen coming and going
11:28
throughout the day, but nothing on the video
11:31
points detectives toward a suspect.
11:33
It does help us kind of narrow down the time
11:35
of death. It also obviously eliminates
11:38
both children of Annandale Valley as suspects,
11:40
being that they're both seen leaving the building and not returning.
11:43
But other than that, there's nothing more compelling on
11:45
the video. We don't see people running away or people
11:48
reacting to a gunshot. Sometimes
11:50
you get a good shot, you know exactly who it is. But
11:53
you have to remember, people are coming, they're wearing hats,
11:55
they might be wearing like a jacket covering up
11:57
their face a little bit. or the other sad fact
11:59
is that.
18:00
but several years. For the most
18:02
part, he lived alone. Occasionally he would have
18:04
people stay with him for short periods of time.
18:07
He had a family, he had an on and off girlfriend,
18:10
sisters, nieces, stepchildren.
18:13
He had a very, very minor criminal
18:15
history, nothing violent, nothing serious. Generally
18:18
speaking, he was a good citizen and a good man. Officers
18:21
received no response at Basil's apartment
18:23
while canvassing the building Friday evening, but
18:26
had no reason at that point to find it suspicious.
18:29
Investigators searched through the surveillance videos
18:31
again,
18:31
now specifically focused on Basil's movements.
18:35
The footage suggests that when the police knocked
18:37
on his door, Basil had likely been
18:39
home, lying dead in his living room.
18:43
We observed both Anna's children,
18:45
as well as the second victim, Basil, leaving
18:48
and then in the case of Basil, returning to the building
18:50
around 9 a.m. At no point has he
18:52
ever seen leaving after that.
18:54
He's coming back with a bodega cup
18:56
of coffee. He's seen walking in
18:58
with it, getting the elevator, getting off the elevator.
19:01
In the crime scene, that cup of coffee is
19:03
there, still three quarters full, on
19:05
his nightstand.
19:08
Based on the coffee cup and other available
19:10
evidence, investigators believe Basil
19:12
and Ana were shot by the same vicious killers
19:15
sometime between 9.30 and 10 a.m.
19:18
Detectives also speak to a few people in the building who
19:20
recall hearing what could have been gunshots Friday
19:23
morning around that time.
19:24
Still, narrowing down when the murders
19:27
occurred doesn't tell police who fired
19:29
the weapons or why they chose to kill
19:31
Ana and Basil.
19:33
As victims, I would describe them as unusual
19:35
but also vulnerable. They were two older
19:38
people at frequent times throughout
19:40
the day, they would have been by themselves.
19:42
They were neighbors, they were cordial, even friendly,
19:44
but not particularly close. No
19:47
one knew of any problems between the
19:49
two victims and anyone else in the building. So
19:52
Valley family has told me basically that they
19:54
tended to try to keep themselves, especially based
19:56
on the kind of things that were going on in the area.
22:00
And people would go sometimes getting
22:02
off on the wrong floor, knocking
22:04
on our door. And they would think they
22:07
were knocking on the sixth floor.
22:08
So my first thought was like, maybe somebody
22:11
got the wrong apartment. Maybe she
22:14
came out to do the floor, mop
22:16
the floor, maybe she saw something, you
22:18
know, when she came out. And maybe
22:20
she was a witness to it. And
22:23
maybe that's why they had to do what
22:25
they did to her. We just don't even
22:27
know.
22:29
Investigators have several theories
22:31
as to why the gunman may have been on the fifth floor,
22:34
but not enough evidence to know who they are
22:37
or exactly why they murdered Ana and
22:39
Basil. Based
22:41
on the investigation we've conducted
22:44
up to this point,
22:45
I don't believe it was just a completely random act.
22:48
I believe whoever did this went to one of those
22:50
apartments looking for something or someone,
22:53
and ultimately it
22:55
ended in tragedy. While
22:57
the victims themselves may not be connected
22:59
to the drug trade, based on our investigation,
23:01
we believe there may be a drug connection
23:04
to why they were killed.
23:06
It's absolutely possible that whoever did
23:08
this either had gone to the wrong apartment
23:11
looking for someone else who wasn't there, or
23:13
it's possible someone may have had information
23:16
that there was either drugs or
23:19
money coming from drugs in one of the apartments,
23:21
and they were looking for those things
23:23
and acting on just bad information.
23:26
But whatever the case may be, there were two people who were willing
23:28
to commit an incredibly violent crime, either
23:30
to get what they were looking for or cover their tracks.
23:34
After repeated in-depth analysis, investigators
23:37
are still unable to identify the killers
23:39
and security footage from the day of the murders.
23:42
It seems unlikely they could have made it in and
23:44
out of the building without being recorded,
23:46
but Detective Minucci believes there may be
23:49
another explanation.
23:50
The possibility is that rather than someone entering
23:53
and leaving the building, it could have been someone
23:55
coming from another floor and then simply returned to that
23:57
floor. The only time we might see them
23:59
if they didn't.
24:00
use the stairs would be on the elevator.
24:02
Could
24:02
the people who killed Anna and Basil
24:04
have lived in their building? Limited
24:06
evidence makes it difficult to establish likely
24:09
suspects or clear motives, but
24:11
with what is known, Detective Minucci
24:13
believes they have a good idea of what happened
24:15
during Anna and Basil's last moments.
24:19
What we believe happened is that the two perpetrators
24:21
enter the building, whether it's from another
24:24
floor or through the main entrance. And
24:26
sometime after 9 a.m., they confront
24:29
Anna either in her apartment or just
24:31
outside of it, bind her, and
24:33
at that point, what is
24:36
possible happens is that Basil hears what's going on
24:38
and comes to investigate. At that point,
24:40
I believe one of the perpetrators chased Basil back into
24:42
his apartment and shot him before Basil was
24:44
able to get the door closed.
24:46
Anna was then shot, and the perpetrators leave
24:48
the area.
24:49
What I have to stress is that that is opinion
24:52
and speculation based on what I've observed. I'm
24:55
fairly confident that is the case, but we
24:57
need a person who knows what happened
25:00
in those apartments. And right now, the
25:02
only people who know what happened are the perpetrators.
25:06
In the days following the murders, police come
25:08
into possession of something that is a possible lead
25:10
to the killer's identity. A mysterious
25:13
cell phone video allegedly recorded
25:15
the morning of May 11th through the peephole
25:17
of an apartment on the fifth floor.
25:20
An anonymous individual was able
25:22
to take what he claimed to be a cell phone video
25:24
around the time of the murders, which
25:27
shows two male individuals and a female
25:29
individual congregating outside
25:31
the apartment. And then there are what are
25:34
possibly gunshots heard in that video. The
25:36
video is not great quality at all.
25:39
Only one person's face is even remotely
25:41
visible. We have released a video to the media
25:43
to see if anyone could be identified on it.
25:45
We continue to investigate to determine
25:48
how accurate and useful that
25:50
video could be. Within days
25:53
of the murders, a $2,500
25:55
reward was offered to anyone with information.
25:58
Over time, the reward has grown.
26:00
to $20,000, but
26:02
it still hasn't been enough to convince someone
26:04
to come forward. After several
26:06
frustrating months without a major break, the
26:08
NYPD partnered with the FBI to
26:11
help move the investigation forward.
26:14
The FBI initially became involved as
26:16
they were conducting their own investigation into the
26:18
drug trade and gang problem in the
26:20
Bushwick community.
26:22
The FBI began to assist us and we worked together
26:24
to kind of pool our resources and try
26:26
to further this investigation. When
26:29
we came into the investigation, we
26:32
were trying to do various different things to
26:34
assist. And one of the ways that the
26:37
FBI and the federal government can't help is with
26:39
money. Special
26:41
Agent John Basso is part of an FBI
26:44
task force that works with the NYPD. In
26:47
March of 2022, the Bureau
26:49
takes a bold step, announcing their
26:51
own $50,000 reward in
26:54
an effort to generate new leads. information
26:57
to law enforcement is often a difficult
26:59
decision to make, especially
27:01
in communities that experience
27:04
violence and that sort of thing. So
27:06
we decided to add more to
27:09
what was already being offered by the NYPD, and
27:12
we're sort of hoping that the amount of money
27:14
plus the amount of time that has elapsed
27:17
convinces people that might be on the fence to
27:20
come forward.

28:30
Family and friends marking
28:32
the anniversary of an unsolved
28:35
double murder in Brooklyn with a vigil. Four
28:37
years later, the question remains why
28:39
with both the FBI and the NYPD
28:41
both trying to find that answer.
28:43
This case is not closed. We want
28:45
the families to know and the public to know. Every aspect,
28:47
every theory is being looked at. My
28:50
heart goes to her family, Anna, and
28:53
hopefully they'll catch this guy that did
28:55
it.
28:57
Now, years later, the FBI
28:59
and the NYPD continue to seek
29:02
justice for the families of Anna Del Valle
29:04
and Basil Gray.
29:06
Authorities won't reveal the details of everything
29:08
they've learned through years of investigation,
29:10
but claim to have developed several persons of
29:12
interest in the case.
29:14
However, more evidence is required
29:16
to file charges and get these brutal
29:18
killers off the streets.
29:22
Sometimes all you need is that one last puzzle piece
29:24
to bring everything you have together.
29:26
In a community like this, people know what
29:29
happened. There's people who have information. There's people
29:31
who know what's going on. And
29:33
the fact that people don't seem to care enough to come forward
29:35
and provide some help to this investigation, it's
29:38
frustrating. These
29:40
weren't two bad people. These were two good people.
29:42
It could have been anybody's mother. It could have been anyone's brother.
29:45
These could have been anyone's loved one.
29:48
So what we need is someone with knowledge, someone who
29:50
knows something about this to come forward and help
29:52
two families find peace after
29:54
losing their loved ones in such a violent fashion.
29:57
Supposedly, you know, everybody. Everybody
30:00
was going about their business and they didn't
30:02
see or hear anything. And of
30:04
course shots were heard. This
30:07
was in the morning. People are going
30:09
to work. People are taking their kids to school. Somebody
30:12
had to hear.
30:14
Maybe they don't want the same to happen
30:16
to them. People are
30:18
just being quiet.
30:20
Someone had to hear, but no one is saying
30:22
anything.
30:23
No one.
30:27
For the victims' families, as long
30:29
as this case remains open,
30:31
each year that passes is a cruel reminder
30:34
that Anna and Basil are no longer with them,
30:36
and they fear the killers may never be held
30:38
accountable. It's
30:41
hard every day without her. It's
30:45
harder on Mother's Day,
30:47
obviously, you know, it's when it happened.
30:51
It's hard to see everybody celebrating,
30:53
and we're not. I
30:55
hope this doesn't become a cold case,
30:58
you know, these people have to pay. How
31:01
these people can just go about their lives,
31:04
you know, like nothing happened. Here
31:06
we are torn apart, you know, not
31:09
knowing why, why her.
31:13
My brothers and I would just want
31:15
someone to come forward and
31:17
say something, make
31:19
these people pay. Between
31:31
the FBI and NYPD, a
31:33
combined total of $70,000 is being offered for
31:36
information leading to Ana and Basil's killers.
31:39
If you have any knowledge of the events surrounding
31:42
their murders or the people responsible,
31:44
You can share what you know by calling the NYPD
31:47
Public Information Office at 646-610-6700 or
31:52
the FBI's New York office at 212-384-1000. Tips
