Description

The phone hacking scandal that closed News of the World was big, but that was just the tip of the iceberg. At the bottom of that iceberg of 'dark arts' - hacking, burglary, bugging, and bribing bent cops - is the body of Daniel Morgan. It’s been described by an Assistant Commissioner of the Metropolitan Police as “one of the most disgraceful episodes in the entire history of the Metropolitan Police Service.” Over the three decades since Daniel was killed, five failed police investigations and an ongoing panel inquiry, his has become the most investigated murder in British history. The story moves from back streets of London, through the highest echelons of Scotland Yard, to the offices of Rupert Murdoch's best selling newspapers, to the doors of Number Ten Downing Street. If you haven't heard this story, ask yourself, why?

I came across the Daniel Morgan’s murder inquiry many years ago, but due to how the previous inquiries were described/ explained, I didn’t invest time seeking to know more. Personally, I was excited for this podcast when in stumbled on it, but the novelty wore off after few episodes in. It seems the producers wanted to unearth every single connection and frankly wasting precious time instead of editing unnecessary info. Season 2 lacked a clear direction which lead to dedicating a couple of episodes to unrelated crimes ( although they denominator was incompetent police forces) .
A strong series on a heinous crime which was intended to conceal corruption but instead lit the fuse to its eventual exposure. The feed hasn't been updated since 2018 despite major developments as recent as a month ago, however the story seems to continue sporadically on this team's ongoing show called Byline. The quality of work here is enough that I'm committing to listen to the entire Byline back catalogue.
