Reopening houses of worship on a wing and a prayer.
They’re now allowed to hold in-person services in LA county…limited to 25 percent of building capacity. But according to Rabbi Richard Camras of Shomrei Torah Synagogue in West Hills (www.stsonline.org) (@shomreitorah)…it may take some time.
He says there’s no immediate date for reopening STS…a committee is working on it. He adds that at this point…it seems more parishioners are content to ”zoom in” than go to services in person. Also he says the temple’s first-ever ‘zoom bar mitzvah’ was an interesting experience…and that they had guests the world over tuning in.
He also says they’re making plans for the temple’s first-ever CAR-Mitzvah in the coming weeks…and says he and the temple staff drove to each student’s house…after this past week’s 7th grade religious school “zoom” graduation.
He says the reopening plan is extremely detailed…and that there may even be a hybrid of online and in-person services during Judaism’s High Holy Days later this year.
And there may be plexiglass screens set up to guard against spittle…caused by chanting in the synagogue.
