Сего́дня я предлага́ю ва́шему внима́нию три интере́сные фра́зы ру́сского языка́, кото́рые помо́гут вам звуча́ть ещё бо́лее по-ру́сски.

Today I offer to your attention three interesting phrases of the Russian language which will help you sound even more Russian.

Начнём мы с фра́зы днём с огнём и с приме́ров:

We begin with a phrase “during the day with fire” and examples:

Поря́дочных люде́й там днём с огнём не сы́щешь.

It is impossible to find honest and decent people there.

До́брых и поучи́тельных совреме́нных фи́льмов не найти́ днём с огнём.

It is impossible to find kind and educative modern movies.

Как ви́дно из приме́ров, не найти́ и́ли не сыска́ть днём с огнём зна́чит “о́чень тру́дно и́ли невозмо́жно найти́”.

As you can see from the examples, “can not find during the day with fire” (under “fire” we mean “torch”) means that it is very difficult or impossible to find something.

Перехо́дим к сле́дующему выраже́нию: по́сле дра́ки кулака́ми не ма́шут. Э́та ру́сская посло́вица напомина́ет нам, что всё ну́жно де́лать во́время. Фра́за применя́ется, когда́ кто-нибу́дь с опозда́нием пыта́ется измени́ть то, что сде́лано, когда́ измени́ть уже́ ничего́ нельзя́. Наприме́р:

Moving on to the next expression: “do not wave your fists after the fight”. This Russian proverb reminds us that everything needs to be done in time. The phrase is applied when someone is talking about changing what has been done, when nothing can be changed. For example:

Ты же уже́ подписа́ла догово́р, чего́ ты до сих пор размышля́ешь? Что сде́лано, то сде́лано. По́сле дра́ки кулака́ми не ма́шут.

You have already signed the contract, what are you still pondering over? What is done is done. Do not wave your fists after the fight.

Ну и после́дняя на сего́дня фра́за: за что купи́л, за то и продаю́. Несмотря́ на звуча́ние, к поку́пкам э́та фра́за не име́ет никако́го отноше́ния. Вот послу́шайте приме́р:

And the last phrase is: “I sell it at the price I’ve paid for it”. Despite the sound, this phrase has nothing to do with the buying thing. Here is an example:

– Ты слы́шал, что парко́вку собира́ются закры́ть?
– Как закры́ть, почему́?
– Я подро́бностей не зна́ю, за что купи́ла, за то и продаю́.

– Have you heard that they want to close the parking?
– How is that, why?
– I don’t know the details, I sell it at the price I’ve paid for it.

Т.е. я переска́зываю тебе́ то, что слы́шала, ничего́ не прибавля́я от себя́ и не руча́ясь за достове́рность. Передаю́ тебе́ но́вость и́менно так, как я её слы́шала.

I.e. I tell you what I’ve heard not adding anything from myself and not vouching for the truth of it. I tell you the news exactly as I heard it.
