Do you consider yourself to be a more traditional leader in the Army or as a veteran? If so, it may be time to take a look at the changes in leadership roles and development that have been happening both in the Army and the civilian workplace.Sergeant Major of the Army Dan Dailey has started to show signs of a new leadership style by addressing soldier's concerns in a recent article in the Army Times. Some of the issues seem like minutiae to many, but to the average soldier, addressing these types of small details can be a very large moral boost. The issue brings to question: what exactly is the correct approach to leading and developing soldiers? Is it the traditional way of yelling, barking orders, and hazing new comers in order to create conformity? Or is it possible that our advancing understanding of human behavior and interaction is showing that building trust (something we often talk about as soldiers) is the central imperative to creating a great unit?We would like to challenge you to assess your own leadership style and determine if your current practices are inline with how leadership is being described today. It is important to remember that veterans and soldiers are looked at for their leadership skills when they separate and enter the civilian work-place. Will you fit in as a leader in a corporate environment? Below are a few books and resources that we have found that can help you better assess your own style and determine what your areas of opportunity might be:BooksThe 7 Habits of Highly Effective PeopleThe Leadership ChallengeDrive: The Surprising Truth About What Motivates UsPodcastsCoaching for LeadersTed Radio HourOffice HoursOf course, as always, you can always reach out to us for further resources and any questions you may have.
