We all joke about gender. You know, the 'classy', "Did you just assume my gender?"But what if something as seemingly simple as gender was a life or death matter? 2016 was the deadliest year on record for the transgender community. 27 people died from anti-transgender violence. That doesn't even count the suicides, and transgender death rates in 2017 are only expected to climb.These statistics are ridiculous. My topic began as a question like, "Why are rates of depression higher in the transgender community higher than in the cisgender community?" Now it's more like a quest for the education of others.So, seriously, listen. I can't make you. I can't force any of you to change. All I can ask is that you become aware. Aware of the needless violence. Aware of deaths that never should have happened. Aware that human rights are in jeopardy.Be aware.
