There is a common misconception out there that the fastest route to monetize a product or service online IS to build a following and then market a product to that following. However, for many business owners, social media audience building just adds another layer of complexity to the marketing process. Sometimes all you need to do is use social media ads to generate traffic to a product or service that people want. If you get the audience right you can bypass the "follower building/audience building completely and go straight the conversion. 

For this reason, the collecting of followers and building of audiences usually needs to come from a place of greater consideration. Why do you want your followers? If you are someone who is building a personal brand/movement or has a greater mission then serving an audience through social media may be the way to get the word out about what you do.
