Meryl Streep in a comedic role is one of the few good things in RICKI AND THE FLASH, and the N.W.A. biopic STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON sands down many of the rough corners of the ground-breaking rap group's controversial history. Alan Scherstuhl and Stephanie Zacharek of the Village Voice along with Amy Nicholson of the LA Weekly discuss those two films at length on this week's podcast before recommending three excellent new films. Amy recommends the comedy documentary CALL ME LUCKY, directed by Bobcat Goldthwait; Alan suggests the Hubert Sauper documentary WE COME AS FRIENDS, the turbulent story about life in the northeastern African country of South Sudan; and Stephanie encourages us to see TEN THOUSAND SAINTS, a story set in the Eighties East Village that finds a newly arrived teeanger living with his dad in the changing neighborhood. As always, follow us on Twitter at @voicefilmclub, and read all of our movie reviews, essays, and interviews at villagevoice.com/movies and laweekly.com/movies.
