Hey y'all , it's The Walking Well podcast . I'm your host

0:12

, Gilon Marts . Thank you for tuning

0:14

in , thank you for listening . We're in

0:16

season seven , and season seven is all

0:18

about when you find yourself in the wilderness , when you find

0:20

yourself in a place where you don't know what's going on

0:23

, where God seems silent or far away

0:25

, where you feel stretched beyond belief

0:27

, where things are just shifting and changing , and it's

0:29

very uncomfortable . And so

0:32

season seven is my tips for the wilderness

0:34

, not necessarily like answers or 'this is

0:36

how you get out of it' , but like when

0:39

you find yourself here these are the things that have helped me

0:41

in this space . And so we've talked about

0:43

having to be hopeful . We've talked about making

0:45

peace with time , participating in our faith

0:47

, prayer and praying , and

0:50

today is about words . And if you

0:52

follow the podcast , you know I'm really passionate about

0:54

how we use our words , because

0:57

they are just such an expression

0:59

of our authority as believers

1:01

. They are such an expression

1:04

of our autonomy

1:06

, our ability to speak to something and

1:08

see things shift and change based on what we release

1:10

into the atmosphere and to the earth . And

1:12

so this is- it's

1:15

not beating a dead horse , but it's just kind of like getting

1:17

on that pedestal again , or that soapbox

1:19

again to say here

1:22

even now , especially here

1:24

, in a space where things just feel like

1:26

out of whack , it's still important to pay attention to

1:28

our words . So

1:30

Proverbs 18: 21 is one

1:32

of my favorite verses when it comes

1:34

to how we use our words , which

1:37

basically says death and life are in the power

1:39

of the tongue , but they that love it will eat the fruit

1:41

thereof . And so two

1:44

really key ideas , which is you

1:47

have a lot of influence with your words . You

1:49

have a lot of influence with your words towards

1:51

yourself , towards others , your

1:54

world , but then also that

1:56

your reality may very well be based

1:58

on the words that you've released- you know, your existence

2:00

, the things that you're seeing or not seeing . You

2:03

m ay be able to trace that stuff , to go,

2:05

Oh wait, I might be delivering on

2:08

my words . You know this might be a

2:10

reflection of what I've said or failed to say

2:12

. And so my

2:15

main idea for this episode , the main

2:17

point I want to make , is that your words

2:19

shape reality , and

2:21

not shape reality in the sense of

2:23

like , oh , i can get myself up out of this

2:25

space if I just speak against it , like

2:27

that's not gonna work , don't try it . But

2:30

it is to say that

2:32

the way

2:34

that you experience this place , the way that you experience

2:36

and move through and posture yourself in this space , will

2:39

be very much so dependent upon and

2:41

influenced by your words . You

2:43

know , the scripture says that out of the abundance of the heart the

2:45

mouth speaks . And I know , for me , when

2:47

I realized like Oh , this is a place

2:49

that you've placed me and I'm not getting up out of it

2:51

anytime , sooner than you intend for me

2:53

to get out of it , i

2:56

was doing a lot of complaining . I was like

2:58

I was talking to my therapist , i was talking to

3:00

my mom , journaling , and all

3:02

of it was just like this is not working , that's not working

3:05

. What's going on ? I thought you said , you know , just

3:07

doing all of that , and I think there's

3:09

a place for that in the wilderness , like I think we

3:11

have a , you know , a reflection in

3:13

the Psalms of David and others

3:15

, just kind of crying out like this is what

3:17

it is , this is how I feel , this is what I'm

3:19

thinking And I'm just going to dump all of that at your feet

3:23

. But I think the wilderness is really tempting because

3:25

we can find that that's our only

3:28

declaration , that's the only

3:30

thing that's coming out of our mouth is this

3:32

is not working . This is uncomfortable . We hate

3:34

it here And here

3:37

. If not , it's just as important here as

3:39

anywhere else any other season in life to pay

3:41

attention , to be

3:43

intentional with our words . When

3:47

I was walking through anxiety in

3:50

2019- ish , the

3:52

importance of the words that I spoke was

3:55

so clear and like was

3:57

just so clearly demonstrated

3:59

to me , because I think that

4:01

whole faith comes by hearing , and hearing by the word of God

4:03

, but also making a daily declaration

4:06

in alignment with truth and alignment

4:08

with the word of God . Things moved and

4:10

shifted in ways that I was like oh , this might be a thing

4:12

, this is real , and it really changed my

4:14

posture on the words that I said Like you

4:17

just not catch me being like , oh my God , I'm dead , lol

4:19

. Like , no , I don't ever . I'm like

4:21

oh , my words are real important , they're influential . I'm

4:24

not about to declare death over me And you can think that's

4:26

deep, And that's fine , I don't care . I'm

4:28

real careful with my words because

4:30

I've seen the positive impact

4:32

. I've seen how my words have shifted

4:35

emotional spaces and

4:37

spiritual spaces for me , so I'm not just

4:39

going to throw stuff around willy-nilly , but

4:41

again in the wilderness , you can feel so much pressure that

4:44

that's just what's coming up out of you

4:46

, and I think my encouragement

4:49

, you know , to you listener

4:51

, a watcher , is to not

4:53

fall off of what you know to do , especially

4:55

in the area of your words . Right ? Your

4:57

words are still going to bring life or death . Your

5:00

words are still going to be something that create a reality

5:02

and shape a reality for you , and

5:04

so , you know , if

5:07

you're not intentional with them , you're

5:10

complaining . Not

5:13

that you don't get the right to vent to the Lord or to

5:15

your people- you do have that right . But

5:17

it can't be the only thing that you're doing with your words is

5:19

basically what I'm saying . You have

5:22

to be intentional . I've had to

5:24

be intentional with using my

5:26

words in a way that directs

5:28

my focus to what I want to see , to

5:31

the reality I want to experience , and

5:33

so sometimes

5:36

, a lot of times , you can use your words to direct

5:38

your focus . You

5:41

know , like I said , out of the abundance of the heart , the mouth

5:43

speaks , and so your words are belying

5:45

where your focus is , and if your focus is

5:47

in , nothing is working , everything is going wrong

5:50

. God's not listening . You're hearing

5:52

that , you know . You are hearing that first

5:54

. And if faith comes by hearing , then are you

5:56

building your faith in a reality that you don't

5:58

want to really experience right ? L ike , is

6:01

your faith or your unbelief being

6:03

built in the direction of 'God is not faithful',

6:05

'God is not listening' , 'he's turned his back on me' , 'he's

6:07

forgotten me' , 'his word is not true' , 'he

6:09

is not faithful' . 'I can't trust him' . Like

6:12

, if that's what you're saying and that's what's stewing

6:14

in your heart , that's

6:16

going to be what comes up out of you , and then you're going to hear it and it's just

6:18

going to feed into the system , the cyclical

6:20

system , and it's

6:23

going to have the opposite effect . I really think that

6:26

there were things that the children of Israel did that

6:28

kind of prolonged , obviously

6:30

, their experience in the wilderness . And

6:33

complaining and the refusal to believe

6:35

God , I think are two really key things

6:37

, because when you

6:39

complain , when you spew

6:42

out all of the things that go contrary

6:44

to what you hope to experience , you're hearing that

6:46

and your faith is being built in that . There's a scripture

6:48

that says Jesus was talking to

6:50

disciples , talking to people , and he's like hey , if you have the faith

6:52

of a mustard seed , you could say to this mountain , be

6:54

thou removed and cast in the sea and it'll obey you . And

6:57

obviously we're not watching mountains get tossed into the

6:59

sea , but I think what he's saying, I

7:01

believe what Jesus was saying in that space, is

7:04

a little bit of faith has a lot of

7:06

, a lot of bit of movement , right ? And so

7:08

if I'm building my faith or my

7:10

unbelief because faith is just belief in

7:12

the positive direction right , if I'm fostering

7:15

an unbelieving heart , if I'm going

7:17

yeah , God's not , God's not , God's not . And I'm

7:19

eating that , how can I expect

7:21

to see God move ? I can't even . I can't

7:24

pray faithful prayers . I can't wake up

7:26

in the morning with expectation that God is going to be

7:28

who he said he's going to be , and so now

7:30

all of my energy , all of my authority

7:32

is being partnered with an outcome I don't even

7:34

want . Right ? And so we

7:37

have to also be really mindful of that , that it's not

7:39

just going to be a way that we direct our focus

7:42

, but that we have to be mindful that we are creative

7:44

speaking beings , that we have authority all

7:46

up in our words . Our words are laced with

7:48

authority , and you can see this not just

7:50

in Christian spaces , but out in the world . The world

7:52

knows , hey , when I say something , I speak it , I'm

7:54

bringing it towards me because it's just a natural

7:56

law . It's a law that God has put in the earth that

7:58

impacts everybody . And so if I'm

8:00

someone that speaks- not if I , because I'm

8:02

someone that speaks and things obey me

8:05

because God created me in his image and that's how God

8:07

rules, I got to be mindful of what I'm partnering

8:09

my authority with right ? I have to be mindful

8:11

of how I take the authority the God-given the authority

8:14

I have to speak and see things move and change

8:16

, and what I'm

8:18

, what I'm associating that with right

8:21

? And so this is really just an encouragement

8:23

to be mindful . When you're in the , when you're in

8:25

the desert and things are tight

8:27

and you're feeling stretched and it's really

8:29

uncomfortable , it's okay

8:31

to journal , it's okay to vent , it's okay to say whatever

8:33

you- you need to say to get it off of your chest

8:36

. But man , regroup , regroup

8:38

, regroup . I remember there was a time I was writing in my journal

8:40

, I was just fuming just like God , this and this

8:42

and this and this and this and this . And I sat

8:44

back and I just was like , okay , we

8:47

just said a lot of negativity , not just negativity

8:49

, like you're not supposed to be negative . But , like we just said , God isn't,

8:52

God didn't, God this God , this God , this . There's

8:54

no way that God is absolutely not coming

8:56

through . There's no way . That's just- that can't

8:59

just be , that just can't be the truth , right ? So

9:01

now I had this opportunity to reflect and go,

9:04

that all-- everything was bad

9:06

. Is everything bad ? Like

9:08

, are there some good things happening ? Let's

9:10

be honest , sis , like , let's be truthful . And

9:15

for me in that moment it was like , oh wait , I

9:17

can see my perspective is off because I'm not

9:20

even going, God , thank you for breath in my body , Or

9:22

thank you that my family is healthy . God , I'm believing

9:24

you for healing for this person . I'm not seeing

9:26

it right now , but you said you're a healer . Like

9:29

, I'm not even engaging in that process . It's one

9:31

of those things like , so , as

9:33

a therapist , if someone sits down with me

9:35

and they're like this isn't going right , that's not going right , everything

9:37

is wrong . I

9:39

know , because I'm sober thinking

9:41

, I'm not as tight up in , as close up

9:43

in their circumstances- I know the likelihood

9:46

that everything is going wrong is

9:49

highly unlikely . There's something going well

9:51

, something is going right in their universe , right ? But

9:54

because they're so like , focused

9:56

so tight in on the thing that's not going well,

9:58

they can't see it . And so it's

10:00

my job to reflect and go wait , didn't

10:03

you get a promotion last week ? Well

10:05

, last time we talked , you said your daughter was

10:07

like having this conversation with you, was opening up and being

10:09

honest , and that wasn't something that she had done before

10:11

. So that's , I mean , that's a win , right ? So now I have

10:13

to reflect back to them like, wait a second . I

10:16

know that's what you're saying , but some of your perspective

10:18

is off , right ? And

10:20

so in this space , I think it's really important

10:22

that we not only have people

10:24

that can go, I hear what you're saying; that's

10:27

not the whole truth . It's important that we can do that

10:29

for ourselves , but I think the

10:31

main way that we're able to kind of step

10:34

back is to be able to go, Wait, what

10:36

has God said to me ? Right ? I'm talking

10:38

about the importance of words . What has God said to me ? What

10:40

are promises God made me ? What are whispers

10:43

that God gave me in night seasons ? What

10:45

are dreams that I've had ? Let me

10:47

go back through my journals , through times when I remember

10:49

things were really good and really tight , because right now

10:51

I'm just taking in information through my senses

10:53

and I'm allowing it to dictate who God

10:55

is to me . God has been faithful , God

10:57

has been good . This season is just a tight

11:00

one , and so I need to be reminded of what

11:02

truth is . And on top of that , I need to say

11:04

it out loud: God , I'm thankful for

11:06

. . . Lord, I see that you did this thing . I was concerned

11:09

about that . Thank you for working on it . Say

11:11

it out loud , because as much as we've complained

11:14

, as much as I've complained about the

11:16

tightness of the season , about feeling like God are

11:18

you listening to me As much

11:20

as I've complained about that or brought

11:22

up my

11:24

requests about how I wish things

11:27

were , I need to also

11:29

be mindful and intentional

11:31

with my words and building my faith . This isn't forever

11:33

, it's for now . This is

11:35

where you are today , but know that God is doing something

11:38

. Lord , thank you that my endurance is being built up

11:40

. God , you know , if this would have happened a

11:42

month ago , it might have crumbled me , but I know

11:44

that because I went through it before I'm getting

11:46

stronger . It's not impacting me like it used to

11:48

. I am speaking kindly to myself

11:51

. What ? ! That is such progress , Lord

11:53

, like I'm being gentle with myself . Whoa , this

11:55

is all good . These are all good things . These

11:58

are all testaments of God's faithfulness

12:01

. And so , while maybe some of the big things

12:03

are still on the way that you're praying for and believing

12:05

for , it's okay a nd it's important

12:07

that we pause and go, wait God is still

12:10

faithful , and I can point out his faithfulness

12:12

here , here and there . So

12:14

that's just my encouragement that , as as

12:17

much as you're feeling pressed on every side

12:19

or pulled in every kind of which way

12:21

, be mindful about using

12:23

your influence , your authority , in a way

12:26

that highlights the goodness of God , highlights

12:28

God's faithfulness , so that your faith can consistently

12:31

and continually be built up in the

12:33

God that you know as a deliverer , the God that you know

12:35

who sees you and knows you and cares

12:37

for you and carries you . So

12:40

that's my encouragement: Use

12:42

your words today to highlight God's

12:44

faithfulness in your life and

12:47

gratitude and gratefulness , and

12:50

just even the moment of like, You know what ? I

12:52

won't be- I

12:54

won't be dominated by

12:57

darkness . I'm not going to be overcome by

12:59

negativity . God is doing something and I

13:02

refuse to let it go unacknowledged Right . So

13:05

that's my encouragement to you this week . Pick

13:07

something that you know God is doing

13:09

that is a win for you , and

13:11

thank him for it out loud with your words and

13:13

be intentional with your words about highlighting

13:16

the faithfulness of God , the goodness of God and

13:19

how God is showing up for you , like he's showing

13:21

up for me in every

13:23

day , little and big ways . So

13:25

that's it for this week . I hope you have an amazing

13:27

one . Make it a great one . Talk

13:29

to you guys later . Bye .
