2:00
Just like superheroes, all
2:02
paranormal researchers have their own
2:05
origin story. The event that
2:07
launched them on their careers as investigators
2:09
of the unknown. Author
2:12
Steven Lancaster came to his
2:14
first supernatural experience earlier
2:16
than most. He was just ten
2:19
years old when he was attacked
2:21
by an invisible entity in
2:23
his bed. Lancaster
2:25
remembers the date vividly. It
2:28
was December fourteenth nineteen
2:30
eighty seven, and he was living in a
2:32
small town in Western Maryland with
2:34
his parents and younger brother. The
2:37
family had moved in several months before.
2:40
Stephen recalls that the Christmas was
2:42
to be their first in a new house.
2:45
As the older kid, his little brother
2:47
was just five, Stephen felt perfectly
2:49
justified in claiming the top
2:51
of the bunk bed set when the family
2:53
moved in. The boy's bedroom
2:56
was chilly at night. The
2:58
house was heated by a coal furnace
3:01
and its warmth struggled to reach
3:03
the second floor. Up
3:05
on the top bunk, it was even
3:07
chiller. But it was worth it
3:09
to Steven to have the prized spot.
3:12
On the night of December fourteenth, the
3:15
boys had gone to bed at nine
3:17
o'clock But of course, going to bed
3:20
and going to sleep mean two
3:22
very different things in kids speak.
3:25
Steven and his brother hoisted around for
3:27
a while, keeping quiet to
3:29
stay off the parental radar. After
3:32
a couple of hours of covert play,
3:35
Steven's little brother was ready to actually
3:37
go to sleep. He dropped
3:40
off almost immediately. Steven,
3:42
on the other hand, lay awake for a
3:44
while, tossing and turning in the
3:46
chilly room. Around
3:48
one in the morning, Stephen clocked
3:51
out too. He became
3:53
possibly awake to something pulling on
3:55
his ankles. He couldn't see
3:57
much in the dark room, but something was
3:59
tentatively grasping his ankles
4:02
and pulling gently. Of
4:04
course, Steven assumed it was his little brother.
4:07
Steven hung his head over the side of the top
4:09
bunk peering down to the bottom bunk.
4:12
His brother looked like he was sound asleep.
4:16
Steven shook his head. Leave it to a
4:18
pesky little brother to try a trick
4:20
like that. He snuggled
4:22
back down into his warm nest and
4:24
closed his eyes. He
4:27
almost dozed off when he felt another
4:29
tug on his ankles. This one
4:31
was harder. Again, Steven
4:33
poked his head over the bed rail hoping
4:35
to catch his brother, diving under
4:37
his own blankets with a muffled giggle.
4:40
But again he heard nothing
4:42
and his brother looked dead to the world.
4:45
At that point it occurred to Steven that his brother
4:48
might not be the one responsible the
4:50
ankle tugging. His sleep
4:52
fuzzy brain was waking up and he was beginning
4:54
to realize that it was originally
4:56
impossible for his brother to invade
4:59
Steven's domain. Give him a tug
5:01
on my ankle, then slip back under
5:03
his covers, undetected, and pretend
5:05
so convincingly to be fast asleep.
5:09
Steven was mulling over this puzzle. He
5:11
realized that some invisible something
5:14
was slowly pulling his blanket down
5:16
towards the foot of his bed. He
5:18
reached for his blanket to pull it back and
5:21
something grabbed both of his wrists. Imagine
5:24
someone grabbing you around the wrists. You
5:26
know what that feels like. This felt
5:28
exactly like that. Something was holding
5:31
on to me and not letting go. The
5:33
skin around my wrists was actually indented
5:35
as if someone were physically grabbing
5:37
me. Steven would write
5:39
much later in his book, true case files
5:41
of a paranormal investigator. It's
5:44
a straightforward description of
5:46
stark terror The
5:49
unseen entity had a hold of Steven,
5:51
and whatever it was had no intention of
5:53
letting him go. Within moments,
5:56
Stephen felt weak, drained
5:58
of energy, and the entity was still
6:00
pulling him down to the foot of the bed.
6:03
Moments before, Stephen had sat
6:05
upright to reach for the retreating blankets.
6:08
Now, the Phantom Yank Tim forward
6:11
flipping him so that his feet were on the
6:13
pillow. And still, he was
6:15
tug, pulled relentlessly toward
6:17
the foot of the bed. Steven
6:19
tried to drag in a breath to scream,
6:22
but it was like trying to yell in a dream.
6:25
Instead of a full throttled holler for
6:27
help, Steven's cries of mom,
6:29
dad came in thin,
6:31
whistling gasps, and yet
6:33
he still struggled. Fighting
6:36
with fiery kids' strength against the
6:38
invisible monster that had him in its clutches.
6:41
Suddenly, Stephen broke free.
6:43
He'd been tugging so hard. He over
6:45
balanced and crashed into the wall.
6:48
The back of his head hit the wall so hard.
6:50
It left a dent in the wood paneling. Steven
6:53
found his voice. Mom! His
6:56
parents came running, his little brother was
6:58
roused from sleep, everyone piled into
7:01
the room as Steven stammered out his incredible
7:03
story. Despite the
7:05
evidence of the head sized dent in the wall,
7:08
Steven's parents wrote the story off as
7:10
an amazingly vivid nightmare. The
7:13
boys were soothed back to sleep,
7:16
but a paranormal investigator was
7:18
born that terrifying night.
7:21
There was an interesting postscript to
7:23
this story. In nineteen eighty
7:25
seven, Steven's parents both dismissed
7:27
his tale. There's was a
7:29
Christian home and such talk was
7:31
discouraged. But many years
7:34
later, Steven was talking with his
7:36
mother about that long ago night,
7:38
and she decided to share a secret with
7:40
him. When Steven's mother
7:42
was herself ten years
7:45
old, the exact same
7:47
thing happened to her. Her
7:50
encounter with the invisible entity was so
7:52
violent. It left visible marks
7:54
on her wrists where she was pulled toward
7:57
the foot of her bed.

9:46
This story happened in Liverpool, England,
9:49
in the early nineteen nineties. It
9:51
has never been explained. The
9:54
story begins one foggy December
9:56
evening in nineteen ninety one,
9:59
on the evening of December twentieth at
10:01
seven PM. The Edwards family
10:03
of Dovecote decided to do a bit of
10:05
late Christmas shopping in the Liverpool
10:07
City Center. Mister Edwards
10:10
drove his wife and four children to
10:12
town in his old Volvo estate. Many
10:15
people had similar plans for the evening,
10:17
and finding a place to park was a chore.
10:21
Mister Edwards trolled to the streets
10:23
looking for a parking spot while his
10:25
daughter and three sons too excited
10:27
to fuss, watch the spectacular Christmas
10:30
decorations slide by the car windows.
10:33
Abbie, the youngest at six years old,
10:36
was especially entranced with the colorful
10:38
lights. As mister Edwards
10:40
grumbled about parking, missus Edwards
10:42
pointed to a secluded side street
10:45
called Bold Place. That's
10:47
perfect. Mister Edwards said,
10:49
He turned and drove up the poorly
10:51
lit cobblestone road, which ran
10:54
past the back of St. Luke's Church.
10:57
As soon as the car was parked, the kids
10:59
jumped out of the vehicle bubbling with
11:01
excitement. Meanwhile, an
11:03
icy fog began to roll
11:05
down the street. The family
11:08
was about to start off 4 the shops when
11:10
mister Edwards suddenly stopped short
11:12
and glanced around the short street. Where's
11:15
Abby? Everyone
11:17
looked around. Mister Edwards peered
11:19
into the windows of the car, but his little daughter
11:21
hadn't lagged behind. It
11:24
was a tremble in missus Edward's voice,
11:26
where is she? Three
11:28
boys looked around, but there was no one
11:30
else on the street. Then
11:33
they all heard a faint voice scream
11:35
out in the distance. Daddy, the
11:38
voice sounded like AbbVie's. It
11:40
seemed to come from the end of the lane
11:43
where Bold Place met Roscoe
11:45
Street. The Edwards family
11:47
rushed up the cobbled road with mister
11:49
Edwards leading the way. Abi, he
11:51
shouted, where are you? The
11:53
gates at the back of St. Luke's were open
11:56
and mister Edward figured that Abi had wandered
11:58
through the gate and onto the grounds of
12:00
the old church. He hurried into
12:02
the churchyard followed closely by
12:04
his wife and their sons And again,
12:06
they heard Abby call out for her daddy.
12:09
But the little girl was nowhere to be
12:11
found. In the fog, was
12:13
getting thicker by the minute. Mister
12:16
Edwards didn't want to say this in front
12:18
of his family, but he was beginning to wonder
12:20
if some stranger had grabbed Abby
12:23
and taken her into the ruins of the old church.
12:26
He handed his wife the car keys and told her
12:28
to get a flashlight from the vehicle. When
12:31
missus Edwards came back, mister Edwards climbed
12:33
up onto the ledge of the church window and
12:36
shown the light into the deserted church.
12:39
The interior was in ruins, with
12:41
nothing but rubble scattered around.
12:44
Mister Edwards knew that the Church of St.
12:46
Luke had been gutted by an incendiary
12:49
bomb in World War two during the blitz.
12:52
Only the shell of the building had survived.
12:55
The church had been left in that condition as
12:57
a reminder of the horrors of war.
13:00
Even though it was in ruins though, mister
13:02
Edwards couldn't shake the thought that
13:04
Abby's voice have been calling for help
13:07
from inside the church. As
13:09
he clambered down from the window ledge,
13:11
missus Edwards said, listen, The
13:14
faint eerie sounds of Oregon music
13:17
drifted through the open window. The
13:20
family went to the police station and told the
13:22
desk sergeant about their lost child. The
13:24
sergeant alerted all the patrol cars in the
13:26
area and told the officers in the city
13:28
center to be on the lookout for the young
13:31
girl. The family then rushed
13:33
back to Bold Place to keep looking for
13:35
Abby. They searched the grounds
13:37
of St. Luke's once again and
13:39
found nothing. They were
13:41
about to go to the car to warm up when
13:43
something happened, but continues to
13:45
puzzle the Edwards family to this day.
13:49
A tall man wearing a top hat
13:51
and a long black coat came
13:53
out of the grounds of St. Luke's and
13:56
walking with him, holding his hand,
13:59
was a little Abby. When
14:01
Abby saw her parents, she ran to them
14:03
and started to cry as her father picked
14:05
her up. The sinister, Man
14:07
in Black, looked like something out of the Victorian
14:09
age. He had long bushy
14:11
sideburns, a pallet face,
14:14
and staring, ink black
14:16
eyes. He stood outside
14:18
the gates of the churchyard and said in a
14:20
low creepy voice, Please
14:22
accept my sincere apology for
14:24
any distress caused. Then
14:27
he turned and walked slowly back
14:29
towards the rear of the ruined church.
14:32
A police patrol car came tearing
14:34
down the road, and mister Edwards told
14:37
the officers about the stranger who had just
14:39
returned his daughter. Three police
14:41
officers bolted from their car and rushed
14:43
into the church, but the police
14:46
found no one. The
14:48
church was empty. More
14:50
police came. The grounds were searched
14:52
with powerful flashlights, but the place
14:54
was deserted. Some of the officers
14:57
also heard the faint sounds of organ
14:59
music, but they never could find
15:01
where the mysterious music was coming
15:03
from. One of the
15:05
policemen asked Abby where she had been,
15:08
and that's when things got really
15:10
weird. Abby said that an
15:13
old woman in a shawl had grabbed
15:15
her and dragged her into the church
15:17
where a mass was being held. There
15:19
were many people dressed in old fashioned
15:21
clothes, The women wore big
15:24
hats, and the men were all dressed
15:26
in black. Abby had
15:28
screamed for her father, but the old woman
15:30
had put her hand over the girl's mouth to
15:32
keep her quiet. Sometime
15:34
later, a tall man had come into
15:36
the church and pulled Abby from the woman's
15:38
clutches. He had been
15:40
the man who had taken Abbie back to her parents.
15:44
The intrigued policeman continued to
15:46
interrogate little girl, and he asked
15:48
her if the man had spoken to her about what had
15:50
happened. Having shook her
15:52
head, then said, the man
15:54
said he had been a long time dead.
15:56
That's all. A
15:59
cold shutter ran up everyone's spine
16:01
when they heard Abby's reply. Since
16:04
that strange incident, Edward's
16:06
family refused to go anywhere
16:09
near St. Luke's, especially
16:12
during the Christmas season. On
16:42
December seventeenth, nineteen fifty
16:45
nine, the William Meyer House
16:47
near Gutenberg Iowa was the
16:49
scene of excitement that had nothing
16:51
to do with the upcoming holidays. A
16:54
poltergeist took over the house and
16:56
soon no one in the family
16:58
was in the Christmas spirit. One
17:02
evening, as the Meijers were sitting in
17:04
their living room, a crash thundered
17:06
through the house. The couple raced
17:08
into the kitchen where the source of the bang
17:10
was immediately apparent. They found
17:12
the refrigerator tipped over. As
17:15
they watched, horror struck,
17:17
a flower stand flew across the room and
17:20
exploded against the stove. Movement
17:23
near a basket of eggs on the window sill
17:25
caught their eye next. One egg
17:27
lifted out of the basket, floated
17:29
across the room and smashed itself on the
17:31
kitchen floor. The Myers
17:34
were dumbfounded. Missus Myers
17:36
was terrified, inexplicable
17:39
was in their home, in their kitchen,
17:41
the heart of the home, what
17:43
on earth was going on. The
17:47
Myers hadn't had supper yet,
17:49
but missus Myers was far too upset
17:51
to cook in that kitchen. The couple
17:53
went out to eat instead. Out
17:56
of the house, among the chatter of the other
17:58
diners, the Myers could almost
18:00
forget the high strangeness of
18:02
earlier. Mrs
18:04
Meyer spelled herself relaxing. Surely,
18:07
there was some rational explanation for
18:10
what had happened. When
18:12
they got home, the miners got ready
18:14
for bed. It had been a sorely
18:17
trying evening and all they wanted
18:19
to do was go to sleep and try to forget
18:21
the destruction in the kitchen. Missus
18:24
Meyer got a glass of water and put it
18:26
on the nightstand. Then she got into
18:28
bed and reached for a book. A little
18:30
light reading would relax her.
18:33
There would be no relaxing
18:36
reading that night. The
18:38
glass rose from the nightstand and
18:40
hovered over missus Meyer's head
18:42
as her husband watched in horror.
18:45
Then the glass was squeezed on a powerful
18:47
invisible hand. It exploded,
18:50
drenching her with water and shards
18:52
of glass. Missus Meyer
18:54
screamed. Her husband Bill,
18:57
just as terrified, insisted they
18:59
moved to the guest bedroom. Missus
19:01
Meyer dried herself off and they moved
19:04
to the other bedroom. They scooted
19:06
under the covers like children brightened
19:08
to the boogeyman. The 4
19:10
bill could even turn off the light. Missus
19:12
Meyer, sweet again. Little
19:15
black specks were appearing on the blanket.
19:19
The Myers looked up, mystified.
19:22
Soot was falling on them from the ceiling
19:24
appearing out of nowhere to shower
19:27
the bed with black grit. In
19:29
the morning, Bill called the sheriff
19:32
and came out to the house to investigate. He
19:35
was called away in the middle of his search, but
19:37
he promised to come back. When
19:39
the sheriff did come back several hours
19:41
later, the Myers met him on the front
19:43
lawn. They'd been spooked yet
19:45
again. The sheriff hadn't
19:48
witnessed any activity during his
19:50
walk through of the house. But after
19:52
he left, several chairs had skidded
19:54
across the floor. Even
19:56
stranger, every single window
19:58
in the house had cracked, but
20:00
the Myers hadn't heard any sounds of
20:03
breaking glass. This
20:05
was the most excitement Clayton County
20:07
Iowa had seen in decades. People
20:10
from Gutenberg and other towns started
20:12
to show up on and out at the Meijer's home
20:14
searching for ghosts. One
20:17
of these visitors was a Mississippi
20:19
River towboat captain who came with
20:21
some friends to investigate the strange tales.
20:24
He admitted to the Meijers that he didn't believe
20:26
in ghosts. Missus Meyer,
20:29
a gracious hostess, despite her supernatural
20:31
troubles, offered the man the use of
20:33
the guest bedroom for the night. The
20:36
captain turned in while his friends
20:38
stayed in the kitchen with the Myers drinking
20:40
coffee and getting better acquainted. A
20:43
ruckus in the bedroom brought the group
20:45
running. The befuddled captain was still
20:47
lying on the mattress. The mattress
20:49
however, was on the floor, eight
20:52
feet away from the bed frame.
20:55
After a few months of poltergeist activity,
20:57
Bill Meyer and his wife had had quite
20:59
enough. They moved away,
21:02
leaving the house empty. Curiosity
21:05
seekers and amateur ghosthunters made
21:07
the abandoned house their haunt for a while.
21:10
The Meijers eventually sold the house
21:12
to their former neighbors, The Finnegan's.
21:15
To combat the vandals that had started using
21:17
a house as a playground, while the
21:19
Finnegan turned the house into a barn.
21:22
Now filled with hay instead of ghosts,
21:25
the house lost much of its spooky
21:27
appeal. The vandals finally
21:29
left it alone.

23:43
Billie Plumber snugged the covers
23:45
up under his chin. He was finding
23:47
it hard to fall asleep on that December
23:49
night to nineteen thirty nine. His
23:52
side then turned over.
23:55
Suddenly he jerked. It felt
23:57
like his wife, Gert, was tickling his feet.
24:00
Startled, he yelled out, hey, nagging off.
24:03
A sleepy mumble met his ears. Billy
24:06
looked over at Gert who was just waking up
24:08
out of a sound sleep. Better
24:10
eyes widened and she twitched away from
24:13
him. Billy Gosh. Stop. That's
24:15
me and I hate being tickled. Gird,
24:17
I didn't do Yeah. Billy squared.
24:19
I said stop. I didn't
24:22
touch you. I've been asleep. Then,
24:24
Gert made a face and clamored out of the bed.
24:26
If you didn't touch me and I didn't touch
24:29
you, we need to check the bed for bugs.
24:32
Billy sprang out of bed at the mention
24:34
of bugs. And switched on the light.
24:37
Together, Billy and Kurt stripped the
24:39
bed. Sheets, pillowcases, even
24:42
the mattress pad landed on the floor after
24:44
a good shaking. No
24:46
bugs thank goodness, gurt said.
24:49
Two pairs of hands made short work of
24:51
putting the bed back together. The
24:53
couple lay down, their fears calmed,
24:56
to enjoy peaceful nights' sleep.
24:59
They got no such thing. The
25:01
invisible entity tickled them unmercifully.
25:04
The plumbers giggled, cry, mold,
25:07
square, pleaded, Eventually,
25:10
the entity relented and allowed the exhausted
25:12
couple a few hours of sleep. At
25:15
four o'clock in the morning, the thump
25:17
rattled the bed frame, jerking Billy and
25:19
Gertz from an uneasy dose. Billy
25:22
slapped a light switch, but no one was in
25:24
the room with them. At least
25:26
no one they could see. A
25:29
sympathy of taps, rattles
25:31
and bangs played up and down the
25:33
bedroom. For months,
25:36
the strange nocturnal noises continued.
25:39
One night in February, a deep voice
25:41
came from somewhere underneath the
25:43
bed. Is the baby asleep.
25:47
Gertz shot from the bed and into the baby's
25:49
room. To her immense relief, their
25:51
infant son was. Sound asleep.
25:55
In mid March, Billy decided to
25:57
try and experiment. He twisted
25:59
a copper wire onto one of the bedspread
26:02
and ran it to a gas pipe in the kitchen.
26:05
That night, for the first time in months,
26:07
the plumbers slept peacefully. They
26:10
won't the next morning refreshed and
26:13
rested. The next night,
26:15
the tickling and bumping was back
26:17
in full force. Billy
26:19
had had enough. So and gurt.
26:22
On the first warm spring day,
26:25
Billy took the bed apart and hold it
26:27
off to the Wichita Dunn. A
26:29
new bed was a small price to pay
26:32
4 a good night sleep. If
