The MacPhail Center for Music was named after the Founder, William S. MacPhail, who was an original member of the Minneapolis Symphony (the Minnesota Orchestra today). He first established the MacPhail School of Violin in 1970 at Minneapolis. Then later on, the school became the MacPhail School of Music and Dramatic Art. When the school needed a bigger space they moved to 1128 LaSalle Avenue, the four-story building located in downtown Minneapolis. The building was so kind that they allowed the MacPhail School of Music and Dramatic Art to expand and then offer conservatory education with the college level. And after World War II, with the help of the GI Bill, the school provided more choices and enrollments. The school gathered almost 3,000 students and has a hundred faculty. Mr. MacPhail passed away in 1962.In 1966, the MacPhail College of Music was given by the MacPhail family to the University of Minnesota. Then later on, the university changed the name of the school to MacPhail Center for the Performing Arts. The university used the school for their extension program. While the school was in the university, they started to make new ways on how to teach young children. And in the 1960s, the Suzuki method program was first launched in the whole nation. The university and MacPhail’s school worked together for almost 28 years, until the university announced that they want to work with institutions that work primarily for the college level. So, in 1994 the MacPhail Center for the Performing Arts became a nonprofit private school again. And in 2003, the MacPhail Center for the Performing Arts changed its name to the MacPhail Center for Music. Now the MacPhail Center for Music, the nonprofit education center for music, is located in the Mills District of Downtown East, Minneapolis. They have now over 13,200 music students. From 2006 they made the registration based on programming in Apple Valley at Paideia Academy. In 2007, a site was open at Birch Lake School in White Bear Lake. In January 2008, a facility flagship was first opened in Minneapolis downtown. In the month of January 2014, they opened another site at Chanhassen. And in 2015 of the same month, the MacPhail started their individual lessons at the Perpich Center for Arts Education.Photo Unique MacPhail Center for Music Building by Richie Diesterheft is licensed under CC BY 2.0
