Death, disablement and divorce. Welcome to this week's episode of WEtv, where we're talking everybody's favourite topic: insurance.

Before you switch off thinking this is dry and boring, Wealth Enhancers CEO Sarah Riegelhuth and Financial Coach Rebecca Pritchard are here to tell you that you need insurance now more than you'll ever need it in your life. In this ep, Sarah and Rebecca explain why.

"Around 10 years ago, I was sitting in a conference room listening to a speaker at a professional development day. I was making a list. The speaker was sharing an emotional story was to show us Financial Advisers in the room, the positive impact the insurance payout had on the family when they needed it most. He had me convinced.

The list I was writing was all of the dearest people in my life, and my best guess at the insurance cover they needed to put in place. I made a promise to myself that as uncomfortable as it might be to talk to my friends and family about illness, injury and even death, I wanted them to have insurance so that if the worst was to happen, at least money wouldn't be anything that needed to worry about.

At times I found it really hard and I honestly didn't push people as hard as I could to get them to take out the cover they need. I didn't want to come across as 'pushy' or 'sales-y'. When it came down to the crunch, I put my fears and insecurities of how I was being perceived, over and above my concern for them to have the right cover in place.

At the beginning of 2016 I got a call from one of my very best friends. Something had happened at work. She was being severely bullied and was going to take some time out. It was an awful situation that eventuated in her having a breakdown. For almost two years she moved through an ugly legal battle, unable to work, and seeing a therapist weekly.

The moment she called a pit opened up in my stomach. We’d talked about insurances several times over the years, but I’d never wanted to push. She didn't have more than the basic income protection insurance provided by her super fund. It had a 90 day waiting period and covered less than half of her salary. Although I knew her situation wasn't life-threatening, it was still incredibly painful to stand by watching as she struggled financially to meet the costs of her therapist.

She ended up moving out of her apartment and back in with her parents. She had no income at all during that period and I've never really forgiven myself for not pushing her harder. Last week I received a call from another friend. Her doctor had found a lump, and it really didn't look good. I burst into tears.

However, this friend is a WE member. I immediately knew whatever happened, at least money wouldn't be a concern for her. We'd recommended a comprehensive insurance plan and she was covered financially. We got down to chat about how the prognosis was looking, what the next steps were and when she'd be going in for surgery.

This is the thing about insurance. It's a tough thing to 'sell' to people because we're basically saying, pay this money every month for something we hope you never, ever need to use. But please, take out the cover you need to provide you (and anyone who might be reliant on you financially) with peace of mind should anything happen.
