An excellent piece of journalism. As a victim of a controlling (and violently abusive) relationship, I appreciated the discussion of how Kirat *was* controlled, abused, and harmed by this relationship even though it was long-distance (not to mention fraudulent) one. The fear she has of being thought gullible mimics the fear many victims of abuse have of being thought stupid. I've had people quite unthinkingly say to me that they're surprised to hear my history of a near-decade-long abusive relationship because they "thought [I was] too smart for that." It's actively harmful and only perpetuates abusive and controlling relationships to engage in what really is a type of victim blaming where you other the victim as some sort of 'gullible' or 'stupid' or 'crazy' person; the reality is that *anyone* could fall victim to such a dangerously manipulative, abusive person.I'd recommend this podcast to anyone, but I will warn that the content may be triggering to those who have suffered through a controlling relationship of some kind.
Wow! Where to begin?? A jawdropping account of malicious catfishing over many years and the devastation it left behind. Catfishing is a concept new to me and listening to this story has made me think it's high time it was made a procecutable crime. The lackadaisical attitude towards this case by the police added insult to injury for the victim and I can only wonder at her strength and ability to rise above it all and carry on. Perhaps this crime - and that is truly what it is - needs a #MeToo movement of its own.
Alexis Mostrous was just absolutely wonderful! He was compassionate to Kirat, but he told her story -- a story that needed to be told. I felt so very sorry for Kirat and I also wanted to shake her and say, girl, RED FLAGS!! But, I get it. There were family members that were Bobby's friends, etc. I hope telling her story heals her quickly and I also hope that she finds happiness, love and peace with her family and friends. Thank goodness for her friends that stood by her! Great job, Alexis. I'd listen to anything you talk about!
Podcaster presents self as an investigator yet, the podcast is nothing but lies and assumptions. No true investigation or evidence
Riveting! I binged this series. I can see it becoming a Netflix documentary.
The first podcast that I’ve listened to from the start to the finish is in one seating. Which is not good for my productivity. But it is good for my true crime-obsessed brain. It was a wonderful podcast that just hooked me on just through the premise. How did someone catfish a person for 10 whole years? This is the sort of stuff that you read in headlines and never delve deep into it because you think that obviously, the victim would be someone gullible who fell for one of those catfishing scams. But this, this is something different. This happened to a seemingly normal person and it devastated her. You can really feel how a person can manipulate and coerce another person to the point that the victim becomes nothing but a shell of their older self. The most surprising part of it was the identity of the real perpetrator, no one could’ve guessed the identity by listening to the initial 2.5 episodes of the podcast so I’m not surprised by the fact that Kirat (the victim) couldn’t digest the fact that the person who had been manipulating her for a whole decade was them. The last 3 episodes unfold in real time which is an interesting concept as we see Alexi, the podcast host trying to confront the perpetrator to get their side of the story. Although I must say listening to the last 3 episodes would’ve been much more enjoyable when they were released as opposed to later on where you quickly find out that a lot of the stuff that happened during that period led them nowhere and the length of the episodes could’ve been shortened. But overall I would say this is one of the best true crime stories I’ve heard in a long while and would recommend giving it a listen.
Pretty good dive into a catfish story. Told mostly from the side of the victim, it really goes in to how sick and dedicated the catfisher was, and honestly, how good they were at it. Respectful of the people involved and well done.
