There’s a quote that comes to mind whenever I’m feeling overwhelmed or in despair: “When you feel helpless, help someone” (said by Nobel Peace Prize winner Aung San Suu Kyi)

Altruism can be a tool to connect with others and create more purpose and meaning in our lives, even in the toughest times. But when we are in a crisis situation, it can be difficult to think beyond our own immediate needs. But by shifting out of that state we can adopt a gratitude mindset, which diminishes fear and anxiety.

I’m inspired by people who take initiative to help others in a big way. Recently I connected with Marco Franco, a holistic practitioner in Playa Del Carmen Mexico, who recently started a project to deliver free meals to more than 100 seniors here each day so that they can stay and home and have their basic needs met. Playa Del Carmen is a popular tourism destination in Mexico and the Coronavirus Pandemic has put thousands out of work. Hunger is a real threat here in Mexico as well as many other parts of the world.

In this episode we discuss:

  • How to find opportunities to help even if you feel helpless
  • How Marco saw an opportunity and quickly mobilized an entire community of volunteers and donors to help.
  • How to balance your personal needs with helping others.
  • How to help even if you can’t leave your house.
  • How to safeguard your own health and boost your immune system during the pandemic.

About Marco:

Marco Franco is a medical doctor who said goodbye to the western medical system, looking for answers to improve health in other modalities of medicine. He currently practices traditional Chinese medicine and other alternative therapies at his studio Santulan Garden. Before arriving in Playa del Carmen, more than 6 years ago, he taught at the medical school of the National Polytechnic Institute and other universities. He has a master's degree in occupational medicine and a diploma in administration in health services.
