During the second debate that Lincoln has with Douglas during his run for the Senate in Illinois has him answering questions that Douglas proposed he answer during the first debate. Lincoln answers them at the beginning of the debate and shows that he is mostly interested as being perceived as a middle of the road kinda guy that would be a people pleaser - not necessarily a man with an opinion. But Lincoln does have an opinion. He cares more about keeping the south in the union than he cares about freeing the slaves. Something Lincoln tried to lie about until he needed a way to end the war of northern aggression.
