Welcome to Why I'm Voting, a production
0:06
of I Heart Radio. Listen.
0:09
You already know this, but it's an election year.
0:12
You might already be tired of fearing about it.
0:14
But here's the thing. Democracy
0:16
doesn't work without you. I'm
0:19
Holly Frying, and I'm sitting down with
0:21
many of my fellow podcasters, from Will
0:23
Ferrell to Stephanie Rule, as well as
0:26
other luminaries to find out about
0:28
their relationships with the ballot box and
0:30
ultimately just to find out why they
0:32
vote. I hope you're
0:34
exercising your right to vote, and if
0:36
you're not, I hope that their stories inspire
0:39
you. Hello,
0:45
and welcome to Why I'm Voting. This is
0:47
honestly a very exciting moment for me because
0:49
I have a guest on who I have watched you a lot of
0:51
amazing things. It is Laurie Hernandez.
0:54
You know her name because she was part of the gold
0:56
medal winning USA women's gymnastics
0:58
team at Summer Olympics.
1:01
She also took home a silver medal on balance
1:03
beam with those Olympics, and that business was
1:05
amazing to behold um. Since
1:07
then, she has competed on Dancing with
1:09
the Stars and One and she
1:12
appeared on a number of other television shows, but
1:14
now she is returning to gymnastics, which makes
1:16
my heart very happy. Lorie, I
1:18
am so thrilled to have you, it's not even
1:20
funny. So thank you, thank you, thank you for joining
1:22
me today. Thank you so much for having
1:24
me. I'm so excited to talk with you today.
1:27
I'm really really excited because you have
1:30
accomplished a great deal, and yet you
1:32
are just a youngster. This is actually your first
1:34
presidential election coming up. Yeah.
1:36
Yeah, I turned eighteen.
1:39
That was my first time voting. But yeah, like you said,
1:41
in terms of kind of first time presidential
1:43
votes, this is my first one. I'm very
1:46
excited. I'm
1:48
excited for you because
1:50
you have been a gymnast for so long, like
1:53
you have lived a life of great focus. So
1:55
I'm wondering if you can recall pretty
1:57
easily when you first learned about
1:59
vote and that you had a pretty
2:01
major part to play in the democratic process.
2:04
Yeah, I mean, well, so my
2:06
parents they felt it was very important for
2:08
me my siblings to understand the gist
2:10
of what's happening and then allow us to kind
2:13
of do our own research and figured it out because
2:15
they wanted they didn't want it to be biased.
2:17
But also they were like, you better
2:19
care about other human beings, and we were like iconic,
2:23
so we were all able to do our own research
2:25
and test things out. And sure enough, Thanksgiving
2:27
is a very enjoying time of year because we all agree. So
2:31
the envy in my heart over that statement alone,
2:34
I'm so sorry. I think it's
2:37
great. I love that you have that with your family. As
2:39
you said, you have voted in a local election, but
2:41
this is the first presidential On a scale
2:43
of one to ten, how excited are you, I'm
2:45
I'm at a ten, just because I
2:47
think, well, here's the thing. Gen
2:50
Z is seen as kind of like not
2:52
caring, apathetic, not very
2:54
in tune with what's happening around them,
2:57
And I would like, just
3:00
genuinely everyone to take a rain check on
3:02
that and to to re reevalue
3:05
reevalue that statement, only
3:08
because we're a lot more in tune with
3:10
what's happening in the world than you think, and
3:13
we're finding very witty ways to fix it,
3:15
which is so exciting to watch and be
3:17
a part of. Um. Yeah,
3:19
but in terms of just being like
3:22
a part of gen Z and in getting
3:24
to vote, I feel that we
3:26
all have a very big voice, and
3:28
we plan on using it. So that's why I'm excited.
3:31
I love it now you mentioned
3:33
and it's interesting to me to think about because I feel
3:35
like for most people, their first election is a presidential
3:38
but you have done a local one, so
3:41
you kind of got over what I think most people
3:43
find to be the scariest part, which is like getting
3:45
in the voting booth and realizing
3:48
they're all of these little elections that you maybe
3:50
didn't realize we're playing out. You didn't know
3:52
all these people. Do you have any nervousness
3:54
going into this one now that you've got like the local
3:57
one under your belt. I think the local home was actually
3:59
really helpful because it helped me understand
4:01
an idea of what I was walking into. Even
4:03
though I'm sure they won't you be too similar,
4:06
but they they'll have their their
4:08
ties. I remember going to the
4:10
local polling place and you know, you
4:12
sit in this little like divider
4:15
table, sing imagig,
4:18
and I remember going through the boxes
4:21
and googling like every other word
4:23
because I had no I
4:26
had no idea like and it was
4:28
terrifying to me because I was like, Okay, how
4:31
can I understand this in my
4:33
own language while like googling everything.
4:36
So it was very important
4:38
for me to actually understand what I was
4:40
checking off in the boxes. And I hope
4:42
that whoever's listening, I encourage you
4:44
to, like, just if you don't know something, take
4:47
the time to look at it. Don't just fill it out because you want to be
4:49
done with filling it out. Like actually understand
4:51
what you're voting for, you know, like
4:53
take a stand, don't pull an air and Burton. Now I'm
4:56
kidding, I love Hamilton's, but yeah,
4:58
I'm just saying, like, in terms of making that
5:00
you understand what you're checking off, I was
5:02
terrified of that, but I got through it. I'm alive,
5:05
so perfect. I will say. At
5:07
my polling place, they don't
5:09
let you take your phone in, Like you have to
5:11
turn it off. So you
5:13
gotta be a little ahead of the game
5:15
and get a sample ballot
5:17
and look that stuff up beforehand because they will dog
5:19
you for the phone. It's happened to be before you
5:22
know. I think, did I fill
5:25
out? There was one that
5:27
I had to fill out at home, and then one that I
5:29
did at the polling place. The polling place they took my
5:31
phone. The one that I took at home. I
5:33
was googling everything and I had my parents on speed
5:35
dogs. But that's great. That's like turning
5:38
to your resources to get the information you need.
5:40
That's exactly what a voter should do. How
5:42
are you prepping for the local elections on
5:44
the ballot this time? Are you basically like looking
5:47
ahead and getting all the information? Now? Are you
5:49
doing a mail in? And you're kind of going to do the same
5:51
you know, open book version a little bit of both.
5:54
I'm keeping my eye out, you know, in the
5:56
city that I live, and I'm in New Jersey right now, but i live
5:58
in California, So I'm keeping an eye out
6:00
for everything that's happening out there and making
6:02
sure that I'm at least in tune with
6:05
like all the stuff that I need to be
6:07
in tune for. But then, especially when it comes
6:09
time to vote, that's where the Google kind
6:11
of slips on in. I love it. Now,
6:13
I am maybe guessing that you are probably
6:16
mailing in this time or are you going to actually
6:18
get to go on election day and do the
6:20
thing festival style? Festival
6:23
style, like the way you said that, it sounds like a music
6:25
festival, but it's politics.
6:27
Um. Yeah, I'm definitely
6:29
gonna be doing vote by mail just because
6:32
it's Yeah, but seeing
6:34
everything that's happening with the post
6:36
office, and that's just all terrifying
6:38
to me. So I have to double
6:41
check my resources in this sense
6:43
of making sure that where I'm
6:45
putting my vote by mail ballot is
6:47
actually going to get sent to the right place and it's not
6:50
just going to be tossed to the side. I'm pretty
6:52
terrified of that. For those who aren't aware, vote
6:54
early, Vote early, give them time to route
6:57
that stuff. Vote
6:59
early, that's the best. Yeah. Do you have any
7:01
plans to celebrate your first big election
7:04
experience? Oh? I
7:06
mean, I'm one to celebrate
7:09
all the things, like,
7:12
oh man, I got a new pair of shoes. I guess
7:14
we all have to have some people over like,
7:17
so I wouldn't be surprised if we had like a mini
7:19
voting party or something. I mean, me and my friends
7:21
have been talking about doing theme parties for a while, so who
7:23
knows. I hope you have a huge
7:25
blowout and you send me pictures, because I'm sure
7:27
it is going to be a blast when it comes
7:30
to election day. Are you going
7:32
to be glued to the television watching or you
7:34
more the kind of person that's like I did my part. I
7:36
will find out when all of the votes are counted. I hate
7:39
my answers neutral again, but yeah, a little bit
7:41
of both. I'm probably going to be glued to the screen knowing
7:43
me. But with social
7:45
media nowadays, which a lot of it is, but
7:48
for the most part, you can be informed if you can
7:50
fight the right sources and you understand, you
7:53
know, the truth behind them, as long as you're looking
7:55
into that and looking for that. Yeah, a little bit of both.
7:57
I'll be tuned into that and making sure I'm checking
7:59
into social men because I know a lot of people have either
8:02
got awful opinions or really great opinions
8:05
and I want to see it all. So you
8:07
know you'll be getting them in real time if you just keep
8:09
an eye on social media. So you're
8:12
all set for my last question.
8:15
As you said, like your age group
8:17
is actually very very active
8:19
and motivated, despite what people
8:21
in my age group might sometimes think,
8:23
which is incorrect. But I'm wondering if
8:25
you encounter someone who is, you know, a peer
8:28
of yours who is maybe like, maam, I'm not going to
8:30
do this voting thing. What is the one
8:32
thing you would hope to convey to them that would
8:34
maybe get them inspired
8:36
to make that effort to mail in that ballot
8:39
or to get to the polling booth. So I
8:42
may or may not will not
8:44
confirm or deny that. On
8:47
my private story on Instagram and Snapchat,
8:49
I put like, if you register to vote, I'll
8:51
I will literally buy you coffee.
8:54
And so I got a bunch of that. I
8:56
got a bunch of people swiping and sending
8:59
me screenshots of their voter registration
9:01
for this year, and I was like, well, I guess
9:03
you get free coffee now, congrats, like and
9:06
you know, I just was hoping that's
9:08
like it's another one was like I have a
9:10
really close friend of mine who's just kind of very
9:13
easy going about it, and I'm like, come
9:15
on, you have to and she's like, you
9:17
know, I don't know. And I was like, I will literally
9:19
buy you dinner for a week, please
9:21
do it. Like I'm just trying to pull
9:24
a teeth at this point, my goodness.
9:26
But I guess, uh, you know, if
9:29
buying dinner isn't enough to convey, then
9:31
uh, let's look at the very small fact
9:33
that our country and the people inside
9:35
of it are relying us to do the right thing. So
9:38
you know, just that small little detail. Yeah,
9:41
you guys are the future, so you want to build
9:43
the future that you want to have. It's more
9:45
important than anything. I think. We're people
9:47
who are just now at that precipice
9:50
of being active voters to really get engaged.
9:52
So I appreciate that you are out there
9:54
proselytizing and encouraging
9:57
your friends and bribing them with treats buying.
10:00
Listen, bribery isn't
10:02
the worst thing sometimes.
10:06
In this case, we'll just call it like reward
10:08
motivation. That sounds a little better and less
10:10
dicey. I think reward motivation.
10:13
Oh, my therapist would be so proud of me. Right now. It's
10:15
just a little, you know, a little nudge
10:18
in the right direction. That's of it. So
10:20
there you have it. You have been nudged
10:23
by Laurie Hernandez, So get
10:25
out and vote because she says so, and she'll
10:27
buy you coffee. I'm
10:31
gonna owe so much coffee to the world, right,
10:33
You're just gonna have to buy like a blanket amount
10:36
of coffee from every major coffee vendor
10:38
in the country and be like, wow, there will be a
10:40
code you'll distribute. I'm sorry that I've
10:42
accidentally set you up for doom, but Laurie,
10:46
thank you so much for chatting with me about
10:48
this. You are so delightful and
10:50
this has been just like the funnest interview
10:52
every Thank you so much.
10:54
Who knew talking about vote and could be so
10:57
much fun? Hey?
11:02
Are you not registered to vote yet? But you
11:04
think it's something you want to do? You may
11:06
still have time. Voter registration
