Motivational author Louise Hay was quoted as saying, “You are not a helpless victim of your own thoughts, but rather a master of your mind.” We have power and control over our thoughts. One of the biggest mistake that we can make is to let our thoughts run without being checked. An exercise that I have found helpful is — when a random, out of the blue thought runs across my mind I ask myself if this is what I am truly feeling? And I try to figure out where that particular thought came from.

As a person that comes from black heritage it scares me every time I hear or see something like what we have been seeing lately. I always think about my dad, my brother, my husband, son and all of my family members. To be honest, I get really scared because I don’t want that to happen to them. I think about that, I ponder what I should tell my son. But realistically, the only thing I can do is do the absolute best that I can do. I can’t worry myself to death about it. I have to take control of the thoughts that are running through my mind. I have to be the master of my mind. I have to find away to counter those negative thoughts when they come. I cant allow myself to become a prisoner of negative thoughts. So, an exercise that I do is as I said earlier, when its a thought that isn’t positive I try to trace it back to something. I try to figure out what made me think about this particular thing and once I identify I know that I need to maybe minimize the attention I am giving to that thing. I also have to say something, whether out loud or to myself to counter the negative thinking. What I refuse to do is allow bad thoughts to setup shop and invite its friends to the party. “You are not a helpless victim of your own thoughts, but rather a master of your mind.”
