When faced with difficult times, you have 2 ways of looking at things.  You can either look at the trial in front of you as an “obstacle” or as an “opportunity” to change something for the better.  When Gerritt was working in the Gang unit, he had a few experiences where he put his coworkers in danger, which ultimately led him to be removed from the gang unit.

After overcoming the shame that came with that time in life, he was able to turn things around and actually become an officer of the year, which was a huge honor for him.  Rather than focusing on the negative and wallowing in self-pity, he found a way to turn that obstacle of being removed from the gang unit into a massive opportunity to change himself for the better.
