About your host:

I’m a clinical psychologist and yoga teacher based in Adelaide, Australia. I originally did a BA in philosophy, and I love connecting and integrating these areas to support the cultivation of mental health and wellbeing, because to me, these elements of my life are not discreetly different.

About this podcast:

Wisdom for Wellbeing is aimed to support you in creating a life that you find meaningful! A life in which you feel a sense of vitality, inspiration and have tools to effectively balance the fullness that comes with your many responsibilities and different hats… as opposed to that all too common survival mode experience.

The idea of this podcast format is that you can listen to it while you’re driving, stacking the dishwasher, or doing any of the other ‘life’ things, and, at the same time, you’ll be introduce you to incredibly helpful philosophies and practices that you can integrate into your busy days for an improved sense of wellness.

What is covered in this episode:

>> The wholistic, integrated approach to wellness we embrace

>> Episodes will be 30 to 60 minutes and feature interviews with an inspirational individuals, including experts in the realms of integrated psychotherapy, acceptance and mindfulness-based practices, and productivity gurus

>> Today is an ‘exception’ episode as it is an introduction to the podcast framework with ‘bonus’ material on values and tricks to cultivate values-based New Year’s Resolutions

Values

When I dare to be powerful, to use my strength in service of my vision, then it becomes less important whether I am afraid. – Audre Lorde

Values are ongoing qualities, actions or behaviours that you display in your life – day-in-day out. They act like a compass, guiding your life. Values are heartfelt and freely chosen– rather than being guided by societies “shoulds”

The Wisdom for Wellbeing values are:

  • Contribution
  • Health (physical, mental, spiritual)
  • Knowledge
  • Growth
  • Hope

Here is a cool game to play – download these values cards and you can ‘sort’ your values (remember, just focus on top 5 or it will get overwhelming!)

New Year’s Resolutions

Very few people keep their resolutions. Possibly because for a behaviour to be maintained it needs to be meaningful and reinforcing. Integrating values into your resolutions can bring a sense of power and vitality.

You may also develop SMART goals to support you in taking committed action to living your values. If values are a compass, goals are the signposts.

  • S = Specific
  • M = Measurable
  • A = Adaptive
  • R = Realistic
  • T = Time Bound

Research indicates if you break your goal down to smaller components you are not just more likely to meet those portions, but the entire thing!
