Hey, Witness listeners, it's Josh Dean here, your
0:02
host of the latest season, Fade to Black,
0:04
and one of the founders of Campsite Media,
0:07
the company that brings you all these incredible
0:09
untold mysteries. But today, I
0:11
want to tell you about another show and a whole
0:13
new franchise. It's our first ever
0:15
Campsite Original series, and season one is
0:18
called White Devil. It's the culmination
0:20
of two years of reporting that begins with
0:22
a tragic shooting of a decorated cop on
0:24
a pier in the tiny tropical nation of
0:26
Belize, and takes listeners on a
0:28
twisty roller coaster ride that leads straight
0:30
into the dark underbelly of a tiny
0:32
tropical country few of us ever think
0:34
about. Here's a little sample of episode
0:36
one of White Devil. I hope you dig
0:38
it. Now buckle up. Police
0:41
superintendent Henry Jomant was a father
0:43
of five and a law enforcement veteran.
0:45
His friends and family say they are
0:48
stunned by his sudden death and equally
0:50
shocked that a police officer could die
0:52
this way. Police in this Central American
0:55
country confirmed Jomant did not die
0:57
in the line of duty, but
0:59
instead in what they describe as
1:01
an incident, the details disclosed that
1:04
Jomant and a woman were drinking
1:06
alone on the pier and both
1:08
were fully clothed. Details
1:10
beyond that are scanned. The
1:15
exact truth of what happened in Belize on
1:17
May 28th, 2021, isn't knowable in any objective way. There
1:23
were two people there alone on an isolated
1:25
pier, and only one survived
1:27
to talk about it. There
1:29
were no witnesses, no cameras. And
1:33
as the saying goes, a dead
1:35
man tells no tales. So
1:38
with that in mind, here's what we know. Sometime
1:41
around 1230 a.m., a
1:43
security guard outside of some luxury condos on
1:45
Ambergas Key, the largest island off the coast
1:48
of Belize, heard a gunshot.
1:51
These condos are adjacent to a brand
1:53
new luxury resort called Alaya on
1:56
the outskirts of the town of San Pedro. If
1:59
you've been to Belize... you've probably stayed in San
2:01
Pedro. It's a party town,
2:03
which fronts the region's largest coral reef. So
2:06
it's filled with bachelors and bachelorettes, as
2:08
well as fishermen and scuba divers. It's
2:11
noisy and can be crowded as tourists
2:13
and golf carts buzz around its narrow
2:15
dirt lanes, dodging beleions selling t-shirts and
2:17
coconuts. But on this night,
2:20
it was very quiet. This was
2:22
pandemic times. When
2:25
the guards who heard that gunshot got to the
2:27
pier, they found just one person, a
2:29
woman they knew well, a young blonde
2:32
Canadian who lived in the condos they were protecting.
2:35
She was in a panicked state covered in blood
2:37
and muttering about an accident. Bobbing
2:40
in the sea just off the pier was
2:42
the body of a large black man who
2:44
turned out to be a cop named Henry
2:46
Jamot. And not just any cop either.
2:49
Henry Jamot was a boss, a
2:51
superintendent. At one time, the second
2:54
ranking police officer on the island. And
2:56
there was no doubt about this part. Henry
2:59
Jamot was dead. After
3:03
seven months of being a murder-free
3:05
island, San Pedro town was rocked
3:07
by the news of the death
3:09
of its former police commander. Just
3:11
after one, Superintendent Henry Jamot was
3:13
fatally shot, reportedly with his own
3:15
weapon. Questions are swirling this morning.
3:17
A high ranking police officer dead,
3:19
a woman connected to a billionaire
3:21
family alone on the pier when
3:23
he died. This morning calls for
3:25
justice. Police
3:27
commissioner Chester Williams believes his highest
3:29
ranking police officer spoke to
3:31
the press a half day later, on the afternoon of May
3:34
29, to update the
3:36
country on his initial findings in this incredible
3:38
case of the rich white woman and the
3:40
dead black cop. Upon
3:43
investigating, police
3:45
found the female on
3:48
a pier. She had
3:50
what appeared to be blood on
3:53
her arms and on her
3:55
clothing. A
3:57
firearm was also seen on the pier.
4:00
that firearm has been retrieved and
4:03
we have learned that the firearm
4:06
belonged to the police. And
4:08
inside the waters right
4:11
near the pier, police
4:14
recovered the lifeless body of
4:16
Mr. Jamot with one
4:19
apparent gunshot wound behind
4:21
the right ear. Behind
4:24
the right ear. That's exactly
4:26
where you would put a bullet if you were trying
4:29
to execute a man. But
4:31
the only plausible executioner here was a young
4:33
woman with no criminal record and a very
4:35
high profile around town. Her
4:38
name was Jasmine Harten. Jasmine
4:40
Harten. A socialite accused of killing
4:42
a police superintendent in Central America
4:44
is behind bars tonight. Jasmine
4:46
Harten was arrested and charged in
4:49
connection to this deadly shooting. Jasmine
4:54
Harten was taken into custody and put in a
4:56
cell. It looked bad, but
4:59
the way things worked and believed, everybody figured
5:01
that this rich, well-connected ex-fat would just buy
5:03
her way out of it. In
5:06
this case, everybody
5:08
was wrong. That
5:12
was a little preview of White Devil, my
5:14
new series, and the first ever campsite original.
