This week I'm chatting with Body Positive Activist, Melissa Gibson (Melly). Melly seeks to engage with and cultivate conversations in the Body Positive Community addressing issues of body oppression and marginalization. She's a Juris doctorate candidate, holds an Masters degree in Women and Gender Studies and her research has focused primarily on Body Positivity, Body Politics, and Fat Studies. Melly uses her social media presence to foster conversations about marginalized bodies that hopefully get people questioning assumptions made about their own bodies and well as the bodies of others.
In this episode we talk about how finding the Body Positive movement changed her life, about being the person you want to be and not the person others want you to be, the true origin of the body positive movement (and how the movement has been co-opted), her fascinating Masters Thesis research, and our responsibility to hold ourselves to a higher standard if we say we're an ally to marginalized people.
