Hello from Wonder Media Network. I'm
0:06
Jenny Kaplan and this is Wamanica.
0:08
Historically, women have been told to make themselves
0:10
smaller, to diminish themselves. Some
0:13
have used that idea to their advantage, disappearing
0:16
into new identities. For
0:18
others, a disappearance was the end of their stories,
0:20
but the beginning of a new chapter of their legacies.
0:24
This month, we're telling the stories of these women. We're
0:26
talking about disappearing acts. Sometimes
0:29
people don't disappear by choice. In
0:31
fifteen forty two, a French ship sailed
0:33
away from a remote island along the coast
0:36
of modern day Canada. From
0:38
its deck, sailors could make out the figures
0:40
of three people standing on the shoreline.
0:42
The captain had spoken the
0:45
crew was leaving a young woman and her two companions
0:47
behind on the unsettled island,
0:50
with its wild beasts and foul weather. They
0:53
were sure to vanish from history, but
0:55
somehow one of them survived.
0:59
Let's talk about Marguerite de la Raque.
1:02
We don't know much about Marguerite's personal history,
1:05
except that she was born in the early sixteenth century
1:07
in France. We also know that she
1:10
was related to Jean Francois de la Roque,
1:12
a powerful noble in the French court, he
1:15
was more commonly referred to by his title
1:17
Sieur de Roberval. In
1:19
fifteen forty two, Roberval captained
1:21
of voyage to a colony in present day Quebec.
1:25
Back then, Canada was still a French colony.
1:27
Marguerite accompanied him, but her presence
1:30
on board the ship ended in scandal. Roberval
1:33
discovered Marguerite was having a secret affair
1:35
with a young man aboard whose identity
1:37
is not known. Roberval condemned
1:40
his young relative's promiscuity and delivered
1:42
a harsh punishment. He
1:45
ordered his crew to row Marguerite and her handmaid
1:47
Demienne out to an unsettled
1:50
island on the Saint Lawrence River. It
1:52
was called Eel de des Mondes, the
1:54
Isle of Demons. Rumors
1:56
swirled that the place was evil and haunted,
1:59
and Robervl wha all was marooning Marguerite and
2:01
Damienne there with no plan to ever return.
2:06
As the crew prepared to leave the two women behind
2:08
stranded, Marguerite's
2:11
lover leaped off the boat to join her in exile.
2:15
Other stories speculate that he forced his way off
2:17
the ship against Reberval's wishes. Another
2:21
theory is that he was forced at gunpoint to join
2:23
his paramour and banishment. Those
2:26
details have been lost to time. We
2:30
do know that as Rubberval sailed away, he left
2:32
three behind with only some food and a
2:34
few firearms to aid them in survival.
2:38
It was a desperate situation, even
2:51
in the summer months. The island was cold by
2:53
evening, Unfamiliar
2:55
wild animals howled furiously at night,
2:58
and the small party fought wirelessly to keep
3:00
them at bay. Their
3:03
days were spent scouting around rock pools
3:05
for fresh water and foraging for food. Marguerite's
3:09
lover built a signal fire to alert any passing
3:11
ships to their presence, but
3:14
months passed and no help came. Soon,
3:17
Marguerite realized she was pregnant. At
3:20
first, she held on to hope that they would be rescued
3:22
and she and her lover could raise their newborn together
3:25
back in France, But
3:27
as their baby's birth approached, the young man
3:29
fell ill. With no medical
3:32
attention and so little food, he
3:35
died. As
3:37
winter approached, the two women continued to struggle
3:39
against the harsh climate. Marguerite
3:42
learned to hunt with the guns left behind by rubber
3:45
val bringing down caribou and bears
3:47
for sustenance. When
3:49
the baby was born, an extra mouth to feed
3:52
became an even greater strain. Desmienne
3:55
grew weaker and more hopeless. She
4:00
died too. Now
4:03
just Marguerite was left to try and keep her baby
4:05
alive, but
4:07
it was no use. The conditions were too rough.
4:11
Marguerite buried all three of the souls that had
4:14
ended up on the Isle of Demons. With her alone
4:17
and exhausted, Marguerite grew more
4:19
desperate. She was sure she'd die on
4:21
the island as well. With no one left to dig
4:24
her grave, she
4:27
continued to hunt wild game, dressing herself
4:29
in fur and skins for warmth. At
4:32
night, she fought off predators in the dark by
4:34
herself. Then,
4:39
more than two years into her exile on the Isle
4:41
of Demons, a fishing ship appeared on the horizon.
4:45
As the boat drew nearer, the crew on board
4:48
must have thought she was one of the demons said to haunt
4:50
the island. She looked the
4:52
part, ragged and hungry and dressed
4:54
in animal skins, But
4:57
no, she was still just a frenchwoman, one
4:59
who need to be rescued. The
5:01
fishermen took her on board, and Marguerite
5:04
sailed with them back to France. Against
5:09
all odds, she had refused to disappear
5:12
into the Canadian wilderness. Marguerite's
5:15
story of survival was recorded by two contemporaries,
5:18
Andrea Taveai, a Catholic clergyman,
5:21
and Queen Marguerite de Navarre. Their
5:23
versions remain the clearest pictures we have of
5:25
what Marguerite experienced on the island, but
5:28
both tales were likely influenced by her banisher
5:31
Roberval's perspective and were not edited
5:33
by Marguerite herself, so
5:35
it's hard to know what details were changed, added
5:38
or left out. The tale has
5:40
been retold and fictionalized many times
5:42
throughout history, but the full story
5:44
of Marguerite's exile remains a mystery.
5:47
Even the Isle of Demons has vanished today,
5:50
we're not sure exactly which present day Canadian
5:52
island it was. All
5:56
month we're talking about disappearing acts. For
