Hello from Wonder Media Network.

I'm Jenny Kaplan, and this is Encyclopedia

Wamanica in honor of the New
0:09
Year and New decade this month
0:12
recovering leaders from throughout history.
0:14
Today we're talking about a woman who was a key
0:16
figure of the Indian rebellion of eighteen
0:19
fifty seven against British rule. She
0:22
was the queen of Johnci, a state
0:24
in North India. Meet Lakshmibai
0:29
Mani Karnica Tambay, nicknamed
0:31
Manu, was born on November nineteenth,
0:34
eighteen twenty eight, in a town called
0:36
Varanasi. Her family
0:38
was part of the upper class Brahman caste.
0:41
Manu's mother died when Manu was four
0:43
years old. Her father worked
0:46
for the Peshwa, basically the prime minister
0:48
of the Bethur district. Manu
0:51
was a playful and independent child. She
0:53
was educated at home and learned how
0:56
to shoot, ride horses, fence and
0:58
more. In May eighteen
1:00
forty two, Manu married the Maharajah
1:02
of Johns. From
1:05
that point on she was called Lakshmi
1:07
Bay. The name was in honor of the Hindu
1:09
goddess Lakshmi, the goddess of prosperity,
1:12
good fortune and beauty. Lakshmi
1:15
Bay and the Maharajah had a son in eighteen
1:17
fifty one, but he died just four
1:20
months later. The Maharajah
1:22
then adopted a son. During
1:24
the adoption, the Maharajah wrote
1:26
a letter to the British political officer of the
1:28
region with instructions that the child
1:30
was to be well treated and that the region
1:33
of Johns was to be ruled by Lakshmi
1:35
Bay for the rest of her lifetime. But
1:38
when the Maharajah died in eighteen fifty
1:40
three, his wishes weren't respected.
1:43
The British East India Company annexed
1:45
the region. When Lakshmi
1:47
Bay heard what they were doing, she said,
1:50
I shall not surrender my Johnsi. But
1:53
in March eighteen fifty four, about
1:56
five months after her husband's death, Lakshmi
1:58
Bay was kicked out of the palace and given an
2:01
annual pension of sixty thousand rupees.
2:04
Three years later, on May tenth, eighteen
2:06
fifty seven, a widespread revolt
2:09
against British colonial rule began in
2:11
India. The skirmish was later called
2:13
by many names, including the Indian Rebellion.
2:16
The first War of Independence and the Indian
2:18
Mutiny. In June of eighteen
2:21
fifty seven, a group of Indian
2:23
rebels took over the star Fort of John
2:25
c, a key building that held both
2:27
treasure and arms. The British
2:29
surrendered to the Indian fighters with
2:32
the promise that they wouldn't be harmed, but
2:34
that promise wasn't kept. The
2:36
rebels killed around fifty British officers
2:38
and their families. Lakshmi
2:41
Bay's involvement in the Star Force massacre
2:43
is debated. The rebels also threatened
2:46
to blow up the palace where Lakshmi Bay lived,
2:48
but she gave them a sizeable sum of money not
2:50
to do so, and they left four days after
2:53
the massacre. In the aftermath,
2:55
Lakshmi Bay took over rule of the region.
2:58
She wrote to the British to tell them of her plans
3:00
and was approved to rule until a new British
3:03
superintendent could arrive. But
3:05
others caught wind of the power vacuum and
3:07
tried to invade Johnsy. Lakshury
3:10
Buy's troops beat back those of her husband's
3:12
nephew, who also claimed the throne.
3:15
When another group attempted to usurp lakshmy
3:17
By, she asked the British for help.
3:19
They didn't respond because by this
3:22
point they'd come to believe that lakshmy
3:24
By herself was responsible for the star
3:26
Fort massacre that had resulted in
3:28
the deaths of British officers and their families
3:31
all alone. Lashury Buy's troops
3:34
defended the fort and beat the challengers back.
3:37
From August eighteen fifty seven to
3:39
January eighteen fifty eight, lasury
3:42
By rule john Cy peacefully.
3:44
In theory she was holding the city
3:46
for the British, but the British
3:48
never came to help or to take over. Their
3:50
tardiness strengthened the arguments of certain
3:53
factions of lakshmy By's followers who
3:55
wanted full independence from the colonizers.
3:58
When the British finally did return, lakshby
4:01
Buy's intentions were no longer to give
4:03
over so easily. When
4:05
a British commander demanded the surrender
4:07
of the city, lakshby Bay responded
4:09
with a proclamation saying, we
4:12
fight for independence. In the
4:14
words of Lord Krishna. We will,
4:16
if we are victorious, enjoy the fruits of
4:18
victory. If defeated and killed
4:20
on the field of battle, we shall surely
4:23
earn eternal glory and salvation. The
4:26
British put Johnsy under siege.
4:28
Lakshby Bye sent word to a childhood friend
4:31
for help and more troops. Her friend,
4:33
Tatya Tope, pulled through
4:36
but got locked in battle with the British.
4:38
On April third, eighteen fifty eight,
4:41
the British attack Johnsy once more, and
4:43
succeeded by taking advantage of breaches in
4:45
the city's defenses. The fighting
4:47
was brutal, as the British fought through swaths
4:50
of determined loyalists throughout the city. When
4:52
it became clear that the city had fallen, lakshmy
4:55
By escaped with her adopted son to
4:57
meet up with other rebel horses. La
5:00
By continued to fight the British as a rebel leader,
5:02
and eventually died in battle in eighteen fifty
5:05
eight. There are multiple accounts of
5:07
her death. In one version
5:09
of the story, she donned a uniform,
5:12
was wounded by a British soldier, and then
5:14
shot him on her deathbed. In another,
5:17
she was severely wounded and asked the bystander
5:19
to burn her body rather than be captured by
5:21
the British.
5:30
Twenty years after her death. In
5:32
the History of the Indian Mutiny, Volume
5:34
three, British Colonel Mallison
5:37
wrote, whatever her faults
5:39
in British eyes may have been, her
5:41
countrymen will forever remember that she was
5:43
driven by ill treatment into rebellion,
5:46
and that she lived and died for her country.
5:48
We cannot forget her contribution for India.
5:52
Tune in tomorrow for the story of another leader.
