Hello from Wonder Media Network.

0:02

I'm Jenny Kaplan and this is

0:05

Encyclopedia Wamanica.

0:07

In case you're just tuning in, here's the deal.

0:10

Every week day for a year, we're

0:12

taking five minutes to tell the story of a

0:14

woman from throughout history and around

0:16

the world who you may or may not know

0:18

about but definitely should. Each

0:21

month is themed, and this month

0:23

we're talking about villainesses. Today

0:27

we're talking about a famous Indian bandit

0:29

turned politician and celebrity. She

0:32

lived an incredible life of crime for eighteen

0:34

years before transforming into a

0:36

politician and activist. Let's

0:40

meet our villainess of the day, Sima

0:42

Parihar. Sima

0:45

was born in nineteen seventy to a poor

0:47

family in the region of Uttar Pradesh,

0:49

India. When she was thirteen years old,

0:52

she was kidnapped from her village by two bandits.

0:55

Soon after, and perhaps with little choice

0:58

in the matter, Sima became a bandit herself.

1:01

Three years later, in nineteen eighty

1:03

six, Sima married another infamous

1:05

outlaw, though she eventually left

1:07

him for one of the men who originally kidnapped

1:09

her. Soon

1:12

Sima was running her own gang in the

1:14

regions around the behind Jungle and

1:17

the Chambal River. During

1:19

her time as gang leader, Sima earned

1:21

the nickname Bandit Queen. She

1:23

said she was inspired by another historic Indian

1:25

bandit named Fulan Devi, a

1:28

woman whose legacy is almost mythical. Over

1:30

eighteen years, Seema allegedly

1:33

killed seventy people, abducted

1:35

nearly two hundred people, and looted

1:37

many homes. But

1:39

in the year two thousand, Sima grew

1:41

tired of the criminal life and turned herself

1:43

in. She was put in jail and

1:46

faced twenty nine charges, including

1:48

eight counts of murder and six counts of kidnapping.

1:53

The following year, Indian political

1:55

parties started reaching out to Sima while

1:57

she was in jail awaiting trial, to see

1:59

if she might be interested in running for office.

2:02

Though a courting a former criminal to run for

2:04

public office may sound somewhat unusual,

2:07

it's actually not without precedent. Full

2:10

On Devi, the woman who Sema modeled herself

2:12

after, had become a popular politician

2:14

after leaving her own life of crime years

2:16

before. In two

2:19

thousand and six, Seema joined the Indian

2:21

Justice Party, and a year later

2:23

she ran for office. She lost

2:26

by only eight hundred and twenty four votes

2:28

as for the pending criminal charges. By

2:30

October two thousand and eight, Seema

2:33

had been acquitted of fifteen of the charges

2:35

and was on bail for the fourteen pending

2:37

cases. Sima

2:40

then went full on into political activism.

2:43

She's well known for her work around anti corruption

2:46

and voter turnout. In twenty

2:48

eleven, she was appointed head of the

2:50

Women's wing of the National Corruption

2:52

Eradication Council. Seema's

2:56

fame also grew for her involvement

2:58

in an entirely different industry. She

3:01

played herself in her own Bollywood

3:03

biopic. The film

3:06

Wounded the Bandit Queen was

3:08

unlike anything that had happened in Indian cinema.

3:11

The film was shot in the Chamball Valley,

3:13

where Sema actually worked as a bandit

3:15

and started the real life protagonist. It

3:18

was released a critical acclaim in two thousand

3:20

and six. But her movie wasn't

3:22

Seema's only foura into show business.

3:25

In twenty ten, Sema was on the

3:27

fourth season of the Indian reality

3:29

TV show Big Boss. For those

3:31

of us in the US, Big Boss is

3:33

the same concept as the popular US

3:35

reality show Big Brother. She

3:38

kidnapped three hundred people murdered around

3:40

seventy and looted approximately Petty

3:42

Holmes. Yep, we are talking about Sema Buddy

3:45

Hag who was seen in Big Boss four. Seema

3:47

almost didn't make it on her season. She

3:49

was actually in jail prior to filming

3:52

and had to file a petition in High Court

3:54

in order to get permission to appear on the show.

3:56

The petition was initially rejected before

3:58

the court reconsidered. The pre

4:00

filming drama and subsequent time on

4:02

the very popular Big Boss helped

4:05

to cement Sema Parry hearts celebrity

4:07

status in India. As a former bandit

4:10

turned politician turned activists

4:12

turned celeb one can only imagine

4:14

what she'll do next. As

4:17

always, we're taking a break for the weekend, but

4:19

tune in on Monday for the story of Another

4:21

villain s special thanks

4:24

to my favorite sister and co creator Liz

4:26

Kaplan. Talk to you on

4:28

Monday. This

4:31

4:34
