Amy G, our show's back and you're back.
0:22
months
0:29
sabbatical. That's right. After
0:31
three years of writing and promoting
0:33
my last book, I needed to mark the
0:36
end of that exhausting chapter. So no work,
0:40
no social media, no to-do lists
0:42
for three months.
0:44
It was very restful
0:48
and I have to say, I also realized modern
0:50
life is really busy, even when you take
0:52
out all of those things. So I'd like
0:54
to say I was like sitting in like Lotus
0:57
Yoga pose for three months, but
0:58
I was running around. Yeah, but do
1:01
you feel refreshed and restored? Refreshed
1:04
is maybe too strong.
1:06
I do feel like things became clearer,
1:09
like what mattered became clear, how I
1:11
wanted to spend my time.
1:13
And I just feel more excited to tackle
1:15
things. I was at the point where anything came in my
1:17
inbox or across my desk, my
1:19
metaphorical desk, and I was like, no. And
1:22
now I'm feeling like, oh yeah, that'll be fun.
1:25
You know, fall for me is sort of like a rebirth
1:27
season and I feel I'm feeling ready
1:30
and rested and, you know, let's
1:33
do this thing. Well, that's good because we have
1:35
a ninth season coming out. On
1:37
Monday, October 16th. So
1:40
let's go through the lineup a little bit. We
1:42
just recorded an episode where we revisit
1:45
our past professional failures.
1:48
That was fun. Vandar
1:51
producer asked us to think about failures
1:53
in advance of that recording, which it's a very
1:55
humbling task. Oh my gosh. I
1:58
mean, and did you did you toy with
1:59
question of,
2:02
you know, should I really talk
2:04
about my failures or should I have, you
2:06
know, a faux failure like, you know, I
2:09
got a story in late last week.
2:11
Would you agree to sweetness? It's actually my
2:13
greatest strength. Yeah. No, I did and
2:16
I did end up talking about a failure I had not
2:18
planned, which was very recent and I have
2:20
to say made my stomach
2:21
turn a little bit. Yeah, they always do. They're
2:23
really cringy, but I enjoyed that conversation
2:26
a lot. Yeah, me too. I would hope it'll encourage
2:28
our listeners to revisit their own
2:30
failures, like whether they're real or perceived
2:33
and put them into perspective. Right, because
2:35
failure is part of any job
2:37
and learning to take responsibility,
2:40
you know, but not more
2:42
responsibility than you ought
2:44
to, not more than your fair share is really important.
2:46
Yeah. And then
2:48
moving on, the most important thing. Yes,
2:50
moving on, which clearly we
2:52
are still doing. I'm excited
2:54
to listen to the conversations you had with those two
2:57
experts on adult ADHD. I haven't heard
2:59
them yet, but you mentioned how enlightening
3:01
they were. Well, first of all, I learned
3:04
that ADHD is a serious
3:06
problem. Someone first needs
3:08
to have a very robust understanding
3:10
of what it means to have ADHD.
3:13
If I just think, oh, I just struggled to focus,
3:16
then I'm not going to understand that it actually
3:18
affects every single aspect of
3:21
every single minute of my life. Did
3:23
you know that? I didn't. I really
3:25
didn't. Yeah, and it shows up in a variety of ways
3:27
that sounded painfully familiar to me.
3:30
We only have so much bandwidth, and
3:32
I have worked with women who
3:35
have told me no one at work would
3:37
ever guess I had ADHD, but
3:40
because it's so exhausting for me
3:42
to keep all that organized,
3:45
the rest of my life is in chaos.
3:47
So we will definitely talk
3:50
about that. Yeah. You
3:52
spoke with a couple of disability advocates,
3:54
Amy. Oh, they were fantastic. That
3:56
conversation for me so far
3:59
in this season... has just been one of the most
4:01
eye-opening in terms of understanding
4:04
what it's like to navigate
4:06
a workplace, what
4:09
accommodations you need when you're
4:11
living with a disability. And whether that
4:13
disability is apparent, people can see it because you're
4:16
perhaps in a wheelchair or non-apparent
4:19
and struggling with ADHD
4:22
or even autism. Especially
4:24
when it comes to behavioral things, people can be
4:27
very judgmental. I have found a
4:29
lot more willingness to accommodate
4:32
my physical disabilities
4:34
than
4:35
my neurodivergence.
4:37
I'm really looking forward to that conversation.
4:39
Oh, and I know we have a ton
4:41
of perspectives and advice to share from
4:43
women who've served on boards.
4:45
When I look back, I could have never imagined
4:48
that I would be providing
4:51
input in this way. Four years ago, I was
4:53
a student in that program, and now I'm contributing
4:57
to the future of this program.
4:59
And if you're worrying that you're not an expert in
5:01
that particular field or in that particular area,
5:03
consider that outside ignorance is
5:05
a good thing to really test what's happening
5:08
and why and whether that's the best way
5:10
of doing things. I didn't realise
5:12
the sense of satisfaction
5:14
doing something like this would give me. It
5:16
was only once I entered into it. And
5:20
the deep sense of purpose and meaning one gets
5:22
from contributing to things where
5:24
you stretch yourself and you're not so
5:26
sure, but you go there and you do it anyway.
5:29
And that's
5:30
only a sample of the collective
5:32
wisdom that you'll hear. For anyone
5:34
who's never considered joining a board
5:37
or assumed they weren't qualified, this
5:39
episode's going to change your thinking.
5:41
And then we've got one episode
5:43
that will be an Ask the Eamese, one
5:45
of my favourite episodes we do, where
5:48
you tell us, you listeners, not
5:50
Amy B, tell us about your interpersonal, managerial,
5:53
career problem. We think it over
5:55
and then give you our take. If
5:57
you want our advice on...
6:00
something you're struggling with right now, email
6:02
women at work at hbr.org
6:04
to contribute.
6:10
Again, season 9 starts Monday,
6:12
October
6:12
16th. More from
6:15
us then. And don't forget to follow
6:17
