Texas Hail Storm Destroys Thousands of Acres of Solar Farms

Baltimore Port’s Closure Threatens Inflation and Bigger Deficits

• The Port of Baltimore has been brought to a standstill thanks to the collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, creating risks to the U.S. economy of additional inflation, diminished productive capacity, and larger government deficits.
• The Port of Baltimore was the 17th busiest port in the nation ranked by total tons in 2021, according to the latest data available from the Bureau of Transportation Statistics. It is the fifth largest on the East Coast, outsized by the ports of New York-New Jersey; Virginia; Mobile, Alabama; and Savanah, Georgia.
• Governor Wes Moore said last year that the port handled a record 52.3 million tons of foreign cargo, worth $80 billion, in 2023. That was a record high.It was the first in terms of the volume of automobiles and light trucks (including 847,158 cars and light trucks),roll on/roll off heavy farm and construction machinery, imported sugar, and imported gypsum, the governor’s office said.
• It was ninth overall as measured by the volume of foreign cargo handled and ninth in terms of the value of foreign cargo., according to Moore.
• The closure of the port could create serious supply chain disruptions for both consumer goods and industrial imports that go into goods manufactured in the U.S. It’s unlikely that all of the lost capacity will be able to be absorbed by the other ports on the Eastern seaboard of the U.S.
• This raises the danger of additional inflation in the U.S. Inflation has fallen from the very high levels seen in the first two years of the Biden administration but remains elevated by historical standards and above levels the Federal Reserve considers appropriate for a healthy economy. In the first two months of this year, inflation has come in unexpectedly high, creating worries that disinflation may have faded.
• “The worst thing that can happen for the Fed, the worst thing that can happen for the economy, are these kinds of supply side shocks because what they do is they reduce the productive capacity of the US economy boost inflation at the same time,” Citigroup’s Andrew Hollenhorst said on Bloomberg TV’s Surveillance program Tuesday.
• If the U.S. government steps in to aid in financing the repairs, as is likely, that will increase the budget deficit at a time when federal borrowing is already historically very high. Further government spending could exacerbate inflation.

SWIFT Planning Launch of Central Bank Digital Currency Trading Platform in 12 Months

• (Reuters) – Global bank messaging network SWIFT is planning a new platform in the next one to two years to connect the wave of central bank digital currencies now in development to the existing finance system, it has told Reuters.
• The move, which would be one of the most significant yet for the nascent CBDC ecosystem given SWIFT’s key role in global banking, is likely to be fine-tuned to when the first major ones are launched.

Special Counsel Report Reveals University of Delaware Misled Courts to Hide Biden’s Senate Records That Likely Hold Sexual Assault Complaint Filed by Tara Reade

• Conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch and the Daily Caller News Foundation petitioned the Delaware Supreme Court to reopen their case to release Biden’s Senate records after Special Counsel Robert Hur revealed the University of Delaware misled the courts.
• The University of Delaware refuses to release Biden’s records and said that the papers will not be released until two years after Biden retires from public office.
• “The collection of former Vice President Biden’s senatorial papers is still being processed, with many items yet to be cataloged,” an email from a school spokeswoman said. “The entire collection will remain closed to the public until two years after Mr. Biden retires from public life.”
• Judicial Watch and the Daily Caller News Foundation initially filed a FOIA lawsuit in 2020 for all of Biden’s senate records – 1,850 boxes of records.

Jordan, Comer Threaten Garland with Contempt over Special Counsel Hur Interviews

• Chairmen Jim Jordan (R-OH) and James Comer (R-KY) of the House Committees on Judiciary and Oversight, respectively, threatened Attorney General Merrick Garland with contempt in a Monday letter.
• The two subpoenaed Garland on February 27 for access to audio recordings of Special Counsel Robert Hur’s interviews with Biden and his ghostwriter Mark Zwonitzer during Hur’s investigation of Biden’s mishandling of classified documents. But according to the letter, the DOJ has only supplied the committees with redacted transcripts of Hur’s interview of Biden and continues to withhold the audio recordings, “which the Committees specifically prioritized” in a March 9 letter to Garland. The DOJ has not supplied either transcript or audio of the interview with Zwonitzer.

• The Monday letter to Garland reiterates its demands, saying “[t]he Committees expect you to produce all responsive materials no later than 12:00 p.m. on April 8, 2024.

Report: Prince Harry Named in Diddy Sex Trafficking Lawsuit

• Prince Harry’s name appeared in multiple U.S. court filings related to a $30 million lawsuit that claims rap and business mogul Sean ‘Diddy’ Combs sexually abused men and women and also participated in sex trafficking activities.

Taiwan conducts missile drills ‘in face of’ China military intrusions

• Taiwan conducted an air defence test on Tuesday deploying US-made Patriot missiles and its anti-aircraft artillery systems, saying it will ramp up training in the face of Chinese military “intrusions” around the self-ruled island.
• Beijing claims Taiwan as part of its territory and has said it will not rule out using force to bring the island under its control.

• Taiwan’s Air Force Command said it conducted an exercise between 5:00 and 7:00 am (2100-2300 GMT Monday) that included the island’s domestically made Sky Bow and US-made Patriot surface-to-air missiles along with army and navy units.
• “The aim was to verify the command and control of joint air defence operations among the three branches of the military,” it said, adding that the exercise went smoothly.

Biden vows to reopen Baltimore port, rebuild collapsed Key Bridge

• President Biden vowed Tuesday to rebuild Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge after it collapsed into the water when a cargo ship rammed into it, echoing what some Maryland officials said earlier but adding that he expects the federal government to foot the bill.
• “It’s my intention that the federal government will pay for the entire cost of reconstructing that bridge, and I expect the Congress to support my effort,” Biden said in remarks at the White House. “This is going to take some time, but the people of Baltimore can count on us though to stick with them at every step of the way until the port is reopen and the bridge is rebuilt.”

Francis Scott Key (August 1, 1779 – January 11, 1843)[3] was an American lawyer, author, and amateur poet from Frederick, Maryland, best known as the author of the text of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner“.[4] Key observed the British bombardment of Fort McHenry in 1814 during the War of 1812.
