You're listening to a

0:02

Mamma Mia podcast. Mamma Mia

0:05

acknowledges the traditional owners of land

0:07

and waters that this podcast is recorded

0:09

on. Welcome

0:12

to YouBeauty, Mamma Mia's daily

0:14

podcast for your face and

0:16

your hair and your wrists and

0:18

your elbows, everything beauty related. I

0:21

am Kelly McCarran, and as always on a Thursday,

0:24

I bring you something that is sometimes educational,

0:26

but hopefully always interesting in beauty land. Now

0:29

today, you bees,

0:30

you're in for a real sexy time because

0:32

I'm chatting about backne and

0:34

chestne and anusyacne and

0:37

legne, if that's even a thing, basically

0:39

body acne. Because now that we're in the colder

0:41

months, anyone that's generally more susceptible

0:44

to acne fears those pesky

0:46

bumps popping up. When I was

0:49

younger, I don't anymore,

0:51

but when I was a teenager, I got horrific

0:54

body acne, like all over my chest,

0:56

and it wasn't like it was just bumps, it was

0:59

red and angry looking. I also

1:01

had it on my face, but a

1:03

lot of people had acne, so it was like I hated

1:05

my pimples on my face, but I felt

1:08

like it was normal. But then

1:10

my body acne, I'd never seen anyone else

1:12

with it, but it is very

1:14

normal. It is so, so, so

1:16

normal. Body acne, it's a very common

1:19

skin condition that occurs when

1:21

the hair follicles become clogged. So

1:23

they might be clogged with oil or dead skin

1:26

or bacteria. If

1:28

you're not showering regularly, it could happen,

1:30

but sometimes it can also be

1:32

hormonal. There's so many different reasons.

1:35

There's three different types of body acne. So there's

1:37

comedonal acne, so they're the non-inflammatory

1:41

ones, like they might be a blackhead or whitehead.

1:43

I still get blackheads, my sister loves it. Sometimes

1:46

I'll just sit in front of her without my top on, and

1:48

she just goes hunting for some

1:50

blackheads on my back, because obviously I can't see them, so

1:52

I don't know if I have them, and she'll be like, yay!

1:55

Then there's inflammatory acne. So

1:57

this is when it's really inflamed.

1:59

This is what I had when I was a teenager, so it could be

2:02

cysts, pustules, pimples,

2:04

and then there's just cystic acne. So

2:07

it's quite severe and

2:08

the bacteria is very

2:10

deep and they're very, very,

2:13

very painful. So it's not just like a cyst that's sitting

2:15

on the skin. It's very, very deep and often

2:17

they can't even be squeezed. Body

2:19

acne differs from facial acne in several

2:21

different ways. So for example, the skin

2:23

on the body is thicker and has

2:26

much larger pores, which does make

2:28

it more prone to clogging. I

2:30

guess you get sweatier, you've

2:32

got clothes on which is causing friction

2:35

and that can all exacerbate acne too. Like

2:37

I said, it's so normal. So if you do get

2:39

this, please don't be embarrassed. I wish that podcasts

2:42

existed when I was in high school. I

2:44

wish that I knew how normal it is. It's

2:46

also not something that just affects teenagers. It

2:49

can affect adults in their 30s, 40s,

2:51

and above. It's just so common. So

2:54

why are you getting this body acne? There are

2:56

a couple of different reasons why you could be.

2:58

Number one, as I mentioned, it could be a hormonal

3:00

imbalance. So there are so

3:03

many different points in your life when you could be going through

3:05

a hormonal change like puberty or menstruation,

3:07

pregnancy. Some people get really bad acne

3:10

when they're pregnant, menopause,

3:12

a lot of these are women issues aren't they?

3:14

But they can cause the skin sebaceous glands

3:16

to produce more oil, which then leads to the formation

3:19

of acne. So if you are all of a sudden

3:21

getting really bad cystic acne, I definitely

3:23

would suggest that you actually go get a blood test

3:26

to check your hormones because there

3:28

could be just something so simple that's off.

3:31

So you don't even need to worry about going down

3:33

the route of all the different treatment options. Next

3:36

up, genetics. So a family history of acne

3:38

can increase your risk of developing

3:41

acne, which doesn't bode well for

3:43

poor Len Dog because I had such

3:45

bad acne growing up. Sweat

3:47

and friction. So sweat, when it's mixed with

3:49

oil in the dead skin cells, they can clog

3:52

the hair follicles and that can lead to acne.

3:54

So if you're wearing tight fitting clothes,

3:56

not washing your clothes enough, not showering enough,

3:59

backpacks and sport equipment, absolute

4:01

breeding ground for bacteria, so all

4:04

of those things can exacerbate acne. Some

4:06

science for these diet inclusions

4:09

and some science against it. And

4:11

then some skin care products can give you acne.

4:14

So if you're using something that's

4:16

really poor clogging such as some moisturizers

4:19

and some sunscreens, if they don't

4:21

react well with your skin, they can contribute

4:23

to the development of acne. And some

4:25

medications such as steroids and lithium

4:28

can cause or worsen acne.

4:29

So those are all different things to

4:32

consider. And because I always ask why

4:34

I'm more susceptible in winter. Why

4:37

does body acne in particular seem

4:40

to sort of appear or rear its ugly

4:42

little heads in winter? And

4:44

there are a couple of reasons.

4:45

Number one, dry skin. So

4:48

cold temperatures and low humidity levels causes

4:50

the skin to become dry and dehydrated. I

4:53

mean, it's like then if my skin's too oily, I'm

4:55

going to get pimples too. But basically your skin's

4:57

then trying to produce too much oil. So

4:59

your sebaceous glands

5:00

going, ah, and they're in overdrive. And

5:03

then you can get more pimples. You wear tight

5:05

clothing and you've got more layers. Then

5:07

there's more pressure and friction. So

5:09

that can cause acne or make it worse. Say

5:12

you've got a spot. If it's constantly being rubbed,

5:14

it might spread or get worse. Lack

5:16

of sunlight can cause your

5:18

acne to get worse. So sunlight helps to kill

5:21

acne causing bacteria. And obviously

5:24

in winter, you spend less time outside

5:26

and then you receive no sun exposure because you're so

5:28

covered up. Always remember

5:30

that sunscreen is so important. Find

5:33

one that works for your skin and that doesn't clog

5:35

your pores too much. And do not forget to

5:37

wear it because sunburn whilst

5:39

obviously being really bad for aging and

5:42

skin cancer can actually make your acne

5:44

worse as well.

5:45

And some say that because you're more stressed

5:48

and more unhappy in winter, your skin

5:50

can get worse, which

5:53

makes me giggle because I totally get that.

6:01

Taking all that in mind, how are we going

6:03

to prevent body acne and how are we going to treat

6:05

it? Some ways to prevent body acne. Wear

6:08

breathable clothing and if you go

6:10

to the gym in the morning, make sure that you shower after

6:12

sweating. I just realized

6:14

I did not do that this morning, but let's be real, I don't

6:17

work out that hard at the gym, so I really

6:19

probably didn't need to. So avoid tight fitting

6:21

clothes that are made with things like polyester

6:24

and fabrics that really don't let your skin breathe.

6:26

And then make sure you're using good skincare products

6:29

and just very diet, drink lots of water, all of

6:31

those things. If you have body

6:33

acne and you want to treat it, there are a bunch

6:36

of different treatment options depending on the severity

6:38

of the condition. There are topical treatments,

6:40

this is products that you're going to use. So

6:43

you might want to use something with salicylic acid

6:45

in it. That ingredient helps unclog pores

6:47

and prevent new acne breakouts. Benzoyl

6:49

peroxide, this is a lot stronger. This

6:52

ingredient helps kill bacteria and reduce inflammation.

6:55

It can also be quite drying, so make sure

6:57

that you use that sparingly.

7:00

And then retinoids, so this is the one

7:02

ingredient that's definitely not for anyone pregnant

7:05

or trying to get pregnant or breastfeed. So

7:07

it's a vitamin A, it's so good at

7:09

unclogging pores and reducing inflammation.

7:12

Have a look at Paula's Choice. Paula's Choice has got

7:14

such good body acne products,

7:16

so they've got this amazing weightless body

7:18

treatment with BHAs in it.

7:21

They've got this exfoliating body spray, because

7:23

you know how you can't really reach your back all the time

7:26

or it's so cold you don't really want to put

7:28

heaps of product on. So just give this

7:30

a little bit of a spritz. And

7:32

there's these amazing exfoliating

7:35

body treatment pads that you can get from Mecha from

7:37

Dr. Dennis Gross. I've recommended the face ones

7:40

before these are the body product. But

7:43

just any of those ingredients, have a look in

7:45

skincare products that you might have at home, because

7:47

you could just give them a try on those

7:49

areas without wasting heaps of product. In

7:52

more severe cases, oral medication

7:55

may be prescribed, so you could talk to your doctor

7:57

about potentially getting a referral to

7:59

a dermatologist. dermatologists because they

8:01

would generally need to be prescribed by a dermatologist.

8:04

Light therapy is amazing. So

8:07

red and blue light, blue light in particular,

8:09

is so good at killing bacteria and reducing

8:12

inflammation. So you could have a look

8:14

at light therapy. And

8:16

it's just important to note once again that

8:18

it's so normal. These treatments

8:20

can take time.

8:22

Make sure you go to the doctor if you're really concerned. And

8:25

in a couple of months, it'll start getting warmer

8:27

and hopefully our Norsea acne will start

8:29

to clear up. But that's

8:31

all the time that I have for today.

8:33

I hope I've helped in some way. I've given you a little

8:36

bit of assistance. Thank you so much for
