You're listening to a Mama

0:03

Mia podcast. Mama Mia acknowledges

0:05

the traditional owners of land and waters

0:07

that this podcast is recorded on. Makeup

0:11

is my therapy. I'm

0:13

obsessed and I don't even feel guilty

0:15

about it. Hello

0:19

and welcome to You Beauty, the daily

0:21

podcast for your face. I'm Lee Campbell.

0:23

I'm Kelly McCarran. So, Kel, what's on

0:25

our Monday agenda for those who might

0:27

be new here? So on Mondays, we

0:29

answer your questions. I

0:32

couldn't help but wonder. Ask me anything. You

0:34

ask many questions. Lee

0:37

and I have 35 years of experience in

0:39

the beauty industry between us. Ooh. Makes

0:41

it sound very elderly. We started when we

0:43

were 11. I've got to get my cane

0:46

out. We are here to share

0:48

all of our knowledge with you so you

0:50

can hit us up via phone, email or

0:52

DMs with any beauty query under the sun.

0:54

And we'll reply with our top tips, product

0:56

recommendations and we're going to spill some host

0:58

tags. Lee, I'm very intrigued by yours today.

1:00

Yes, well, mine does involve a kitchen appliance,

1:03

but we'll get to that later. Let's

1:05

get into the questions from the UB's first.

1:07

We've got a question from a UB called Catherine.

1:11

Hi, I have a question for Lee and

1:13

Kelly. You talked a little bit

1:16

about your hair routine, but could you

1:18

give me a step by step rundown

1:20

of your hair routine from shampooing to

1:22

drying to styling? I'm really

1:24

confused what products I meant to use

1:26

after washing to avoid frizz, particularly when

1:28

I air dry. Also, how often are

1:31

you ladies getting your haircut to avoid

1:33

split ends? Thank you so much. Lol,

1:35

Lee, when I saw this question, I

1:37

was like, um. Well,

1:42

my hair routine is the most

1:44

neglected part of my entire beauty routine.

1:46

Your hair routine is some sort of

1:48

fabulous whip together top knot. And

1:51

that's it. Like I don't wear it down

1:53

because I don't have a hair routine and

1:55

it often looks like a woolly lion's mane.

1:57

However, that might make some of the UB's

1:59

feel. better because a lot of people, A,

2:01

can't be bothered, don't know what to do.

2:03

Just flick it back. So talk me through

2:05

a regular week. Let's talk about a good

2:07

week, shall we? Okay. Because otherwise it's literally,

2:09

I just shampooed it at some point and

2:11

then just used dry shampoo every single day.

2:14

Lots of people do that. So on a

2:16

good week, I would say that I wash

2:18

my hair two to three times.

2:20

I'd say probably two is more likely. And

2:23

one is a big, really good wash.

2:25

So I will use, like in your

2:27

everything shower. Yeah, my everything shower. So

2:29

maybe on a Sunday or I'll use

2:31

a clarifying shampoo or a scrub or

2:33

something just to really get at my

2:35

scalp. So I might even do a

2:37

pre-shower scalp cleanse, which is kind of

2:39

like there's different oils or serums that

2:41

you can use that really sort of

2:43

munch away at all of that dead

2:45

skin on your scalp because often your

2:47

scalp is so neglected. Mine is. So

2:50

if you're going to use a pre-wash scalp

2:52

serum or scrub in the shower, just to

2:54

really get at your scalp. And then I

2:56

will use an actual clarifying shampoo just to

2:58

get any excess product out of the rest

3:01

of my hair as well. So I've worked

3:03

it all into my scalp, cleansed better, and

3:05

then gotten it through the ends of my

3:07

hair just to product build

3:09

up a lot of

3:12

oil, sweat, probably like

3:14

crayon bits, who knows what's in my

3:16

hair at any given moment. Then

3:19

my second wash will just be any old

3:21

regular shampoo. And then if I'm doing a

3:24

proper everything show, I'll actually go on with

3:26

a purple shampoo, so three washes and

3:29

the purple shampoo. And that neutralizes brassiness

3:31

in blondes. So because I'm blond and

3:33

I throw a lot of red, like

3:35

my natural color is quite warm. Yeah.

3:38

I use the purple shampoo generally once a

3:40

week just to really like neutralize that and

3:42

get rid of the brassiness. And

3:45

then I will apply some

3:47

sort of a mask and some sort of a

3:49

protein filter in the... Well, this

3:51

is... I don't do it very often. I'm talking about

3:53

if I was like on my best behavior. Yes. Or

3:56

I'll just put in a regular conditioner and then when I get

3:58

out, I'll use the K18. after it's

4:00

pile dried a little bit. You don't

4:02

even have to condition but I do.

4:05

She's actually falling asleep everyone. And then

4:07

I let it air dry a little

4:09

bit then I will brush it otherwise

4:11

it's hell to brush. Like a wet brush? Yes. So

4:14

do you use a wet brush? Like a tangle tea? Yes. The

4:16

tangle tea is a wet brush. I've had it for a booing

4:18

use. It's mouldy. I really need to buy a new one. Mine's

4:20

all manganese. Mine's not mouldy but my prongs

4:22

have gone. And I keep thinking go and

4:25

buy another one. They're $20. Go and buy another

4:27

one. I'm going to come out after this. Oh

4:29

let's go. And then I'll put in some sort

4:31

of detangler or heat serum or just some sort

4:33

of a serum. I don't have any rhyme or

4:35

reason I'll just grab whatever I'm feeling. You kind

4:37

of feel what your hair's vibing right? And also

4:39

what you're doing. Where you going? Every single other

4:42

day I'll put in dry shampoo and put your

4:44

hair up. Put it on top of my hair.

4:46

Why don't you cut your hair short? Because

4:48

I don't like the feeling of hair on my neck. Oh

4:50

my god me too. I mean I've got very short hair

4:52

but that's the one gripe I have.

4:54

Sometimes I'm like get off me. And then I'm like

4:57

oh it's my hair. And also because of my frame

4:59

I tend to look very soccer

5:01

mum. Okay. With short hair. You know like

5:03

some people can pull it off and they

5:05

look chic but I don't know. I think

5:07

because I'm really tall and broad I look

5:09

like Miss Trunchbull soccer mum vibe. Well you

5:11

know just enroll Landon's soccer and then I'll

5:13

just be like yelling at him from the

5:15

sidelines with my Speak to the Manager haircut.

5:17

I love it. Okay mine's pretty simple but

5:19

I do things along the way that helps

5:21

that. So I'm a very oily

5:23

root girl and when my hair was very

5:25

long my ends were very dry. But now

5:27

my hair is short. I get it cut

5:29

every six weeks because six weeks of

5:32

hair growth makes a massive difference when you've got a bob.

5:34

I wash my hair let's say five

5:37

times out of seven. Wow. Yeah because

5:39

I'm so oily. Yeah. And also because

5:41

I've had keratin which I'll talk about

5:44

now. I have kerat silk straightening once

5:46

every five months. Because I've

5:48

had that I can wash and wear.

5:50

Yeah. So I don't have to then blow

5:52

dry, curl, whatever. And you're a morning shower.

5:54

I always forget that because I shower before

5:57

bed and most of the time I'm like

5:59

I don't know. I don't want wet hair.

6:01

Oh God, no. It feels so gross. It's really

6:03

the morning. I'm actually too busy. Yeah, I know.

6:05

It's hard, and that's another reason why I've kind

6:07

of nailed my low maintenance mum hair because oftentimes

6:09

I'm trying to get to preschool and work and

6:11

blah, blah, blah. So let's

6:13

say a shampoo five times out of seven, it's like the

6:16

day I've got Alexander, Thursdays I normally just try and slick

6:18

it back and not that I have much hair to put

6:20

in a bun. And then Sundays I'm normally like. You could

6:22

still claw click pit though. Yeah, I do. I put in

6:24

a tiny little paintbrush pony. But

6:26

I shampoo twice, same shampoo, don't bother using

6:28

separate ones. And then I condition. Sometimes

6:31

I'll do a treatment. Sometimes I'll do a

6:33

toner. So I have dark hair, but my

6:35

hair throws a lot of warmth through. Most

6:38

people's hair does. It's a big misconception that

6:40

you have to be born to use a

6:42

toning product. So I use the Davro Cool

6:44

Graphite color treatment. And you do it after

6:47

shampooing and before conditioning. And it just kind

6:49

of knocks out the warmth in

6:51

any of your ends, your brown ends. If

6:53

I'm not doing that, I'll use the Justice Hair Care

6:55

that I recommended a while ago. 10

6:58

second hair miracle, which is kind of like an

7:00

oily serum that just makes your hair feel delicious.

7:02

And you literally only need 10 minutes. 10

7:05

seconds. Oh, yeah, 10 seconds. Thank goodness. 10 minutes

7:07

is a long time. I've been waiting way too

7:09

long. You can pluck your leg hairs at that.

7:11

Oh my god, I did that yesterday. We've been

7:13

using that. Why? Because I had to play Lego

7:15

and I was bored. Anyway,

7:17

yeah, so I have the Kerasilk

7:19

straightening treatment once every five months now.

7:21

And that just kind of relaxes and de-frizzes

7:23

the roots. Obviously the ends have still got

7:25

it going on. Just keep growing it out.

7:28

So then I will just chuck

7:31

in some sort of like detangler,

7:33

protection, whatever. I'm pretty flirty

7:36

when it comes to those, I chop and

7:38

change. At the moment I'm using the Fakai

7:40

Clean Styler Prime Mist Serum. You can get

7:42

it from Sephora. It's

7:44

for protecting split ends, dryness, dullness, freeze, heat

7:46

protection. So it's just one of those all

7:48

over. Yes. But you know, there's so

7:50

many of those products. You don't have to spend a lot of money,

7:52

just anything. And that's a spray that I always

7:55

spray into my palm and then work it through because you

7:57

can accidentally go OTT with those. my

8:00

hair is dry and I've air dried, I just chuck

8:02

in some Kevin Murphy bedroom hair. I talked about that

8:04

a few weeks ago and I bought three more bottles.

8:06

I love it. It just adds this like editorial

8:09

grit of like cool

8:11

girl but not too much. You know, you can build

8:13

it up if you want to. So if

8:16

I'm going somewhere really fancy, once my hair is air

8:18

dried, I'll use a straightener or a tongue just to

8:20

do a little bend on the top

8:22

layer. That's it. Yeah. But I used to have

8:24

very long hair and I loved it when I

8:26

did it. I bit like you hated it otherwise

8:28

because it was back in a bun, but it

8:30

was a full hour. So maybe you're

8:33

cutting your hair. Yeah. If it suits

8:35

you. All keratin straightening. Yeah. Lucy

8:38

also has had that done and she said

8:40

she's really happy with the result. It's honestly

8:42

such a game changer and it's this kerasilk

8:44

one that I get is in and

8:47

out in an hour or an hour and a

8:49

half. They literally just put it in, dry it in,

8:51

shampoo it out. Like it's still for me, it's

8:53

not worth the money because I still wouldn't wear my

8:55

hair down. Yeah. It's the feeling of it on. Yes.

8:58

And I don't like the hair up. And when

9:00

I do wear it down, it's like such a treat

9:02

for everyone. Yeah. And I'm like, Oh, I miss

9:04

having up to it. So there's definitely a downside to

9:06

having short hair, but I've just nailed the, you've

9:08

nailed it. Working mum gotta go. He still, I also

9:10

forgot to mention how often I get my hair cut.

9:12

Oh yeah. It's probably helpful for someone with long

9:15

hair. I also am bleached. So

9:17

I do need to get it cut more than say, if you

9:19

don't have like colour in your hair, I

9:22

would say my hairdresser does it every second

9:25

visit, which would be every three months-ish because I

9:27

go every four to six weeks. That's pretty good.

9:29

I'm so easy with my hair. I'm like, you

9:32

do what needs to be done. I'm not pressured

9:34

about it. Yeah. When I was young, I would

9:36

be like, no, don't cut it. But then I

9:38

was walking around with like feral wispy, like

9:41

broken bits. Yeah. It's not a good look. So

9:43

I'm always just like, if you need to cut

9:45

it, cut it. I agree. People, you know, there's

9:47

that old myth. It's like cutting your hair will

9:49

help it grow longer. No, it won't, but it'll

9:51

keep the ends healthier. And it makes it look

9:53

better overall, because it's not like wisp.

9:56

Also, if you want to just have a quick

9:58

little hack, turn your show. The cold in

10:00

i'm sorry I don't do this. My husband does

10:02

my own of mile cold showers but it as

10:05

close to cuticle of the hair sauce and kind

10:07

of help control the phrase and if you just

10:09

that the freeze on the top. It's like we

10:11

said with a kind of the tenggulun something to

10:13

school said a little bit more on your part.

10:15

that's when I say to the I cancelled going

10:17

on underneath. Catherine. I don't know if we

10:20

helped you were bit of a hot mess that I feel

10:22

like everyone's here's a bit of a journey and I know

10:24

what the time I me answer is you do what you

10:26

know, yes and as much effort as he can be bothered

10:28

putting in. Next

10:35

that we have a question from Forty Cost.

10:38

Fi. Last apologists two questions

10:40

if I may. Firstly, if I play

10:43

lip balm with Sps in his thirties

10:45

and the with bull. So. Any

10:47

lip product or the top that doesn't

10:49

have Sps in it all that impact

10:52

the efficacy of the sps. Also

10:54

allows us or to him so award

10:56

or thankfully is that occurred he uses

10:59

with them with other than a disposable

11:01

thought I'd like to be more environmentally

11:03

friendly. With cleansing is this will

11:06

think. You look Veronica snuck into question

11:08

that's bit shaky about I like her.

11:11

Because. She's diligent with Scf and she

11:13

likes my cellar. what up? So I'll

11:15

I'll allow it safely. Can you apply

11:17

lip product over your Spf lip balm?

11:19

You absolutely can. So. Just

11:21

give it a bit of times. Raw five minutes. Method:

11:23

Dry like. sort of. Get. Tacky? Yes

11:25

exactly. And then you can apply you

11:28

glossy, can apply you Lippi whatever you

11:30

want. But don't forget you need surgery.

11:32

Apply on this. the As products frequently.

11:34

So bad you kind of starting from scratch.

11:36

Do you really want to every two hours?

11:39

Or. More if you're eating, drinking, We

11:41

can yell at the whatever do us

11:43

vs them yell at the semi y

11:45

su hearts. My recommendation would be to

11:48

look for an Spf lip product that

11:50

you have hinted feels like that So

11:52

Ultraviolet has some really beautiful shades in

11:54

their lip balm. It's an Fbs the

11:57

steal it bomb in his seven shades.

11:59

Twenty seven! Dollar for you can definitely

12:01

get some call of an author lip liner.

12:03

Maybe they lip liner to see give you

12:05

more definition an industry. Your Sbs products naked

12:08

Sundays through beautiful with oil always has a

12:10

foil say that looks like really fully can

12:12

kind of like go off last se pare

12:15

back with a knife flip Lonnie gonna look

12:17

like you've done properly absolutely and then you're

12:19

on a may that one top card or

12:21

if you want more of a traditional it

12:24

bomb the been by Sands what bombs are

12:26

all Spf fifty plus and then fly them.

12:29

You. Want to wait for the alone you want posted

12:31

cook cannot have a topical me were so yeah

12:33

totally up to you if you can be bothered

12:35

but it's not kind of put yes yes on

12:37

ellipses thing in the morning and then put your

12:39

so you're lucky you're have to keep reapplying and

12:42

semi. Cbs. Yeah cause

12:44

he bothers your second part of the

12:46

question. Absolutely. We probably were thirty cotton

12:48

pads he'd generically but I at all

12:50

mind that I use. Yeah, it'd be

12:52

very rare for me to use one

12:54

that wasn't a washable been correct. It's

12:56

why do we say that still at

12:58

an arts I think we dislike it

13:00

is what it is and you might

13:02

think we use results now sometimes when

13:04

I'm in a hotel or he as

13:06

little trouble fact that they give you.

13:08

but absolutely so he's a few options

13:10

that I like: the Alpha rates: Reusable

13:12

bamboo cotton pad. You get a Packers.

13:14

A. Lot for Twenty Four Ninety Five

13:16

their little triangle so they kind of

13:19

goods getting to the area in the

13:21

eyes yeah pockets. I hope it's great

13:23

for double cleansing. Metro has a range

13:26

of essential that they may called mecca

13:28

Essential are reusable cleansing safe pads twenty

13:30

four dollars have fights are which a

13:33

really good but my favorite one direction

13:35

the most affordable if I'm Norris life

13:37

and they called Last Basics reusable cotton

13:40

pads. The reason I like that means

13:42

they see now and more me a

13:44

cotton. pad as opposed them proper sabriya like

13:46

this in ones to yeah it's a really

13:49

like to see fabric your tally one stayed

13:51

up all your my cell aboard out where

13:53

is this feels more like a disposal competitive

13:55

scene but still does the jobs we small

13:57

brands would do really solid one The

14:00

white ones, you get feral so quickly. Well yeah, because

14:02

you're taking your makeup off. Yeah, it's nice to store

14:04

it in like, you know, an old candle jar or

14:07

something like, and then it's just so easy. You just

14:09

spot it, grab one, chuck it in the dirty clothes

14:11

pile. Yeah, I've got a little basket that I put

14:13

my dirty ones in, and you're right, because I've been

14:15

bleaching them, but that's not good for the environment. And

14:18

also it's like then they always smell a little bleached.

14:20

They're a little bleached, yeah. Like just brands, if you're

14:22

listening. Make a brown one. Just

14:24

like a peach one. Go to, you've got

14:26

them. Release it in your signature colour. Yeah.

14:28

And then the violet would imagine in that

14:31

beautiful deep blue. Blue. That would be

14:33

good. You're right. And sunnedays, purple. I

14:35

do have some grey ones that I got off Amazon. They're

14:37

bigger, like they're kind of almost like a face washer, but

14:39

they're microfiber. You know, I want like small, the thin ones,

14:41

in colours so they're not gross. I'm going to find them

14:43

for us. But the nourished, last ones are so affordable, you

14:45

get 10 for $4.95. So

14:50

there you go. Start with those, but yes, you

14:52

can also get disposable Q-tips, but they've got a little rubber

14:54

end, and I don't find them that effective because you can't

14:56

really wet them. They're good if you want to like get

14:58

off a flake of makeup or something like that. What

15:08

a hack. You

15:10

makeup packs. All

15:12

right. Host

15:14

hack. Host hack. Host hack. Doo-doo-doo-doo-doo.

15:18

Host hack. So minus put your hair in the toaster. Only

15:21

joking. That would not go well. Put

15:24

your pencils in the freezer. Why?

15:26

So a few weeks ago we

15:28

were talking about, we were recommending a product. Oh,

15:30

you were recommending the Kylie Lip Liner. And I

15:32

asked, is it a retractable or is it a

15:34

traditional pencil? And you said traditional pencil. So

15:37

a retractable eyeliner and lip liner is so good because you

15:39

don't have to sharpen, you just wind it up and off

15:41

you go. But ordinarily you get

15:43

a lot less products like that actual

15:45

stick of colour than you would in

15:47

a traditional pencil. Traditional pencil,

15:49

more product, annoying, must sharpen. Then

15:52

you sharpen, then the little plate,

15:54

the tip. The

15:56

titty tip snaps off because obviously it's a soft

15:59

kind of lip liner. or

16:01

eyeliner. So put them in the freezer.

16:03

You need to be there for 10 minutes before you sharpen. If

16:06

you're organized like Kelly and wash your brushes, you

16:08

could probably like put all your pencils in there

16:10

at once and then do a sharpening session. But

16:12

sometimes I'm just like, eek, that black eyeliner is

16:14

really just gross. It's really onto it. It looks

16:16

like an eraser almost, it's so stubby. And

16:19

you're like, this is not a nice neat detailed

16:21

eye. This is no. Mudge. This is a smoky

16:23

eye whether I like it or not. But

16:25

then because I like really creamy blendable formulas that

16:28

both lip and eye, often when

16:30

I go to sharpen it, that little bit keeps snapping off.

16:32

And I'm like, oh my gosh. So you stick them in

16:34

the freezer, 10 minutes is all you need, sharpen. And the

16:37

coldness has kind of crisped up that formula.

16:39

Then just let them thaw out before you

16:41

use them. But it honestly makes

16:43

such a big difference. At the moment

16:46

I've been using the Mecha Max black eye max

16:48

eyeliner pencil in blackest black. That was a

16:50

lot of black, it was 16 bucks. It's

16:53

a traditional pencil, perfect. Honestly, it'll even make

16:55

you not that great pencils better if you

16:57

keep them sharper. My host

16:59

hack is about how to

17:01

fix a pressed powder product,

17:04

whether or not it's an eye shadow, a

17:06

bronzer, whatever it is. So

17:08

about a couple of months ago, no

17:10

it was only last month, I was away on a girls

17:12

weekend and one of the girls, well I don't know, chatting

17:14

about makeup and she was like, oh, I've

17:17

broken my hourglass ambient light

17:20

powder. And she was like,

17:22

and it's just so expensive and I just cannot

17:24

justify buying a new one when it's just so

17:26

much product life. And I was like, damn me

17:28

on Instagram when we get home and I'm going

17:30

to send you instructions on how to fix it.

17:33

Anyway, and then I just kind of forgot about, and

17:35

then a week later she was like, because I also,

17:37

she's got two kids, she's a partner at

17:39

a huge law firm. I was like, I

17:41

don't know if she's gonna be bothered or if she's just gonna

17:43

end up going to Mecha and purchasing a new one. She's not

17:45

a makeup girl either, by the way. Has she been carrying around

17:47

in like a little sandwich bag? I've known friends

17:49

before. No, no, you think that broken bits? She

17:51

just wasn't briny, she wasn't taking any of it.

17:53

She was a glowy makeup girl as well. She's

17:55

very minimal product. And anyway,

17:58

so I've sent her the instructions. and

18:00

she sent me back with like, it looking

18:02

brand new. Yes. I'm sure like,

18:04

oh my God, I did it. So what do

18:06

people use? So all you need, and this is

18:09

the thing, most people have it at home, it's

18:11

just a rubbing alcohol. And I know that probably

18:13

sounds like, oh, I wouldn't have one. If you

18:15

have a look in your like, cleaning or medicine

18:18

cabinet, you probably have one. And

18:20

all you need, so you put all of the

18:22

powder crumbs into a little

18:24

dish, and then just a few drops

18:26

and mix it up, so it's like,

18:28

pasty? A dry-ish paste. And

18:31

then using like a piece of glad wrap

18:33

or whatever, just press it into the pan,

18:35

whatever it's, and you can do it with

18:37

any powdered product. Yes. Press it back into

18:39

the pan. Once you've got it into the position that you

18:41

want it in, use a paper

18:43

towel to sort of like, press out any

18:46

excess moisture, any excess alcohol, and then let

18:48

it completely dry. Yes, and then it just

18:50

like, makes it a brick again sort of

18:52

thing. It feels good. As good as new.

18:54

I almost want to break, everyone's gonna try it. As

18:56

good as new. Not ambient light. I

18:59

might try it with... Try it with something cheap, just

19:01

in case. But I absolutely know it works. I've seen

19:03

many friends use it. I guess with our jobs, we

19:05

just go, oh, that's a shame, but then we just

19:07

try something different. But I'm gonna try it. Try it.

19:09

Yeah. So it's not bumpy at all. It's

19:12

literally the same texture. I'll post a photo of what she sent me

19:14

versus it brand new online. Obviously you can

19:16

tell it's not brand new. But it's better

19:18

than spending another $100. Exactly.

19:21

It's just, I was so impressed, and I'm the one that

19:23

gave her the tip. It's like when you use hand sanitisering

19:26

hands and it just disappears. Yes. Wow,

19:28

we are saving money by fixing all

19:30

our old palettes. And that's it for

19:33

today. Thank you for sending your questions.

19:35

of another huge name in the beauty

19:48

world. We'll see you on Friday for

19:50

spendy-savy. We have been trying a lot

19:52

of products recently, so we're excited to

19:54

share them all with you guys then.

19:56
