0:59
Not much to plug up top. A
1:01
big thank you to everybody in LA. Not
1:03
to plug, but to say thanks at
1:06
the Wilshire Evil Theatre. That was
1:08
last night for me the day I'm recording
1:10
this. It was so close to being sold
1:12
out. It was incredible. I'm
1:15
so glad so many people came out. It was over
1:17
a thousand, a thousand people came to the show. Melted
1:20
my heart to see people in
1:22
there. It's hard, you know, I've been talking
1:24
about it on the pod. It's hard during a festival. There's
1:26
so many shows and you
1:28
guys really showed up and it was
1:31
really heartwarming to me and an incredible
1:33
show and an incredible show for Matt
1:35
McCarthy and I had so much fun
1:37
with you guys. So just a big thank you to
1:39
everybody that came to the show in LA on May
1:41
the 4th. If you don't live near LA and you
1:43
want to see me, I'm coming to Chicago. We
1:46
added a second show on Thursday. I'm also
1:48
coming to Texas and Pennsylvania. All sorts of
1:50
dates on peat homes.com and if you are
1:52
in LA but you miss me or
1:55
you want to come see me again, I do a monthly show at
1:57
Largo. Go to largo dash l a dot
1:59
com. and look for Pete Holmes living at
2:01
Largo. That's always the highlight of my month, trying
2:03
out new stuff, doing some, some of
2:06
the act as well. It's always amazing. All
2:08
right, enjoy. David
2:11
Duchatny, I'm so glad you're here. Get
2:14
into it. I am thrilled to
2:16
meet you. I'm a big fan of yours.
2:20
I think you're very, very funny. I actually, you know,
2:22
I just did a movie with Judy Greer. Say
2:25
what? Oh, I love,
2:27
I love, I love Judy Greer. Judy Greer
2:29
is amazing, and she told me to
2:32
watch the TV set, which
2:34
I did. And I thought
2:37
you were phenomenal in it. And I'm also
2:39
friends with Jed, and Jed was like, that's
2:41
kind of me. And I kind
2:43
of saw you do a little bit of a character
2:45
study on Jed with the back problems and the, you
2:47
know, the heavy crown of the
2:49
producer. The paunch. And the paunch,
2:51
of course. Yeah, I, it
2:54
was funny with that, with that movie
2:56
because that was Jake Kasdan writing
2:59
and directing. And it really,
3:03
you know, Jake pitched it to me as this
3:05
is kind of my experience
3:07
with Jed on freaks and geeks. I
3:10
was like, oh yeah, yeah, I'll play,
3:12
I'll play Jed. You know, and nobody
3:14
fucking knew who Jed Apatow was. Yeah.
3:17
And the day
3:20
we did the table read, you know,
3:22
the week before we were gonna start shooting, we did
3:24
a table read for investors,
3:26
because it was cobbled together, like, you know,
3:28
20 bucks from this guy. And, you know,
3:30
it was just a true independent kind of
3:32
labor of love film for the Kasdan family.
3:34
Yeah. And we
3:37
fucking went to the screening, the
3:39
premiere screening of 40 Year Old
3:41
Virgin that night. And
3:43
I just remember sitting there and
3:45
watching the audience just go nuts. And
3:47
I was like, oh, they're gonna know
3:50
who Jed Apatow. Yeah, you're out of
3:52
the bag. I actually started
3:54
to play him when nobody knew his name.
3:56
And then by the time the movie came
3:58
out, he was an actor. There was
4:00
like, epitobian. Yeah, yeah, yeah.
4:02
This is how Jason Alexander must have felt
4:05
when Kerb came out. They're like, oh, there
4:07
it is. There's the guy
4:09
that I was kind of embracing the
4:11
whole time. And now Larry David is
4:13
almost, well, I don't know. I
4:16
don't know if you'd say more famous, but maybe
4:18
as famous as Seinfeld. I would say that. Yeah,
4:21
in his, in that way.
4:24
Yeah. I mean, I'm
4:26
sad that I never got to be on that show. You
4:29
would have been great on it. Yeah, that would have
4:31
been fun to do. It seemed like a bit of
4:33
improvising, which I like to do. Yeah.
4:37
But back to Judy Greer, just
4:39
such a talented, funny, beautiful woman.
4:43
I mean, I just love Judy Greer. No,
4:45
she was wonderful. And I'm glad she told
4:47
me somehow I had never seen, heard of
4:49
that movie. And as somebody working
4:51
in LA, that's, you know, I've created my own shows.
4:54
My experience, I worked with some
4:56
really, with TBS, I worked with a very hands-off
4:58
network. And then with HBO, I worked on
5:00
like a, like respectfully hands-off network. So I didn't
5:02
have the experience. Which were the shows that you
5:04
did? I did a talk show called
5:06
The Pete Holmes Show that was on after Conan. And
5:09
then I did a show that Judd
5:11
directed and co-created with me called Crashing
5:13
on HBO, which was about being a
5:15
comedian coming up in New York. But
5:19
in both cases, we didn't have the nightmare
5:21
that is the movie, the TV set of
5:23
like getting noted to death and all that
5:25
sort of stuff. I,
5:29
well, anyway, you're doing a podcast anyway.
5:31
I know. That doesn't get, what
5:34
is going, why, what's going on, David? Why are you
5:36
doing a podcast? It's called
5:38
Fail Better. Am I getting that correct? Yeah. Don't,
5:41
you don't just say it like that. Fail Better. Like
5:43
with a question mark and an exclamation point
5:46
and it's underlined. Yeah. No,
5:48
no, no. It's a great title. We say on this
5:50
podcast all the time, fail faster. We say fail faster,
5:53
find the fun, which I didn't make up. Oh,
5:55
where's that from? It
5:57
was framed in a video game. like
6:00
an independent video game company had it
6:02
framed as their mantra, fail faster,
6:04
find the fun. So if somebody was like, what
6:06
if this game was two dimensional instead of three dimensional
6:08
do it, they would just be like, just do it,
6:12
get to the fail because we know that
6:14
that fail yields the result. Is that sort
6:16
of the theme? I guess. I mean,
6:18
I don't know. I mean, one of the things that's
6:21
interesting about doing a podcast as I'm sure
6:23
you know, is that you don't really know
6:25
what you're doing or thinking or
6:27
saying until you're out there doing it. So my
6:30
sense was, and this happened during
6:32
the strikes of last
6:34
year. So my agent said, we
6:37
can't do anything for you. You know,
6:39
nothing can be done, but we can
6:41
do podcasts. Did you ever think about
6:43
doing a podcast? Cause that's covered under
6:45
SAG after or whatever. Yeah. And I
6:47
was like, uh, no, but I
6:50
guess I could talk to somebody about it. And
6:53
I came up with a couple ideas and had
6:55
a discussion with the, uh,
6:57
agent there. And then we just sold it. It was
6:59
like, I wish the rest of Hollywood
7:02
was this easy, you know, or the, or
7:06
the people making decisions could actually make decisions
7:08
that quickly. You know, it was kind of
7:10
beautiful in that way. And
7:12
I'm working with this company, Limonada,
7:14
which is they've been amazing and,
7:16
and really collaborative. But I
7:19
mean, my sense was, you
7:21
know, I don't know what I'm talking about. I
7:24
just know that a lot of things are
7:27
tinged with failure in
7:30
the creative arts and in life. And,
7:33
um, even, even the successes can
7:35
sometimes feel like that. And obviously
7:39
personal failures as well. I don't know. I
7:41
don't know how to process them. I don't
7:43
know. You know, we talk about resiliency and
7:45
we talk about all this. It's not like
7:47
I have any answers. All I'm doing is
7:49
having people come on and saying, are you
7:51
interested in this angle of the discussion? Looking
7:54
at your life as a
7:56
series of failures surrounded by
7:58
occasional successes, whatever. Right and
8:00
what did you learn how did
8:02
you grow resilience if you did that are
8:06
there some failures that stuck with you
8:08
forever that that continue to hurt you
8:10
know cuz we have this narrative that
8:12
yeah you know you learn from failure
8:14
is cool it's great you gotta fail
8:16
but some failures really kinda stick. Yeah
8:18
yeah what do you do about those
8:21
so yeah that's just
8:23
that's just the door opening i don't know
8:25
what the fuck i'm talking about i'm no
8:27
expert in it i'm not a psychologist that's
8:29
just. I think it's an
8:31
interesting angle on a discussion that's kind of what
8:33
i'm going after well i mean we've been doing
8:35
a show for a long time and i think
8:38
you're doing two things really really perfectly actually one
8:40
is being loose about your premise. Because
8:42
i'm gonna fall away as i'm
8:44
sure you've discovered the promise but
8:46
also inviting the guest to be
8:48
vulnerable. Yeah even if you don't
8:51
end up talking about failure you're saying like will
8:53
you come on in the spirit of someone who's willing
8:55
to talk about their failures even if we don't
8:57
end up doing that. Yeah
9:00
exactly and also i don't wanna. I'm
9:03
not trying to spring anything on anybody
9:05
i'm not interested in that's us too
9:07
yeah we let it getting i say
9:09
it i go it's not a got your podcast in
9:12
fact i'll say that you even if there is something in
9:14
a week and you go i wish i hadn't said that
9:16
we just take it out this is something. You
9:18
know we're making together and then
9:21
i feel like people actually do wanna share and that
9:23
was actually my first plan the
9:25
question was like how open. Is
9:27
david to company why won't you love me gonna be
9:30
on a podcast because honestly i have
9:33
you on your on my podcast right now. How
9:37
open is david to company why won't you let me
9:39
gonna be on my podcast. Yeah
9:43
i do because a couple of things
9:46
have been have been nagging at
9:48
me since i started doing my
9:50
own pockets which is. You
9:52
know i don't wanna give away my good shit you
9:54
know like i like you pete cool you know but
9:56
i if i come up with something good i'd rather
9:59
it was on my. podcast. So there's like
10:01
something... Well, let
10:03
me give you a tip. Just do it on
10:05
both. Because that's nobody cares. That's the other thing.
10:07
It's true. The problem
10:09
with doing a podcast now is
10:12
everybody is kind of hip to how to
10:14
do a podcast now or how to
10:17
speak on a podcast. Everybody's got
10:19
that rap down pretty good. And
10:22
I'm so not interested in that. And I'm not
10:24
interested in hearing it come out of my mouth
10:26
either. So I guess my answer would be, I
10:30
try to address whatever questions you
10:32
have in an original way. I'll try
10:34
to answer them as if I'm answering
10:36
them for the first time. I am.
10:38
But the
10:41
other part of the answer to that is...
10:48
I think I've lost it.
10:51
Whatever it was, I lost it. How
10:54
open are you going to be? How open am I going
10:56
to be? You don't want to use your shit on my
10:58
podcast. No, I might. No, I'll be open. I'll be open.
11:00
No, no, no. You wouldn't have said that if you were
11:02
really going to lock up the vault. Nobody would think that
11:05
you're big and tight. Yeah.
11:10
I think everybody just goes through this calculus now where
11:12
they go, we're
11:14
all fucking whores. We want to entertain. And I
11:17
want to make you laugh. And I want to
11:19
make your audience laugh.
11:22
But the calculus now, where you're like, well, is that
11:24
laugh worth it? Well,
11:28
I actually think that the podcast, we're a comedy
11:30
podcast, but we also kind of lean self healthy
11:32
sort of stuff. And like one of the great
11:34
reliefs of this show is that we're not really
11:36
trying to be funny. We have like huge laugh
11:39
moments, but you'll as an artist, you'll appreciate sometimes
11:41
they have a 90 minute or
11:43
a 45 minute setup to that moment. You
11:45
know what I mean? It's just kind of
11:47
talking, but then you actually score
11:49
in this like the best
11:52
feast, like a long thing that only has
11:54
one punchline. It's kind of like that. And
11:56
it became its own art form. And like
11:58
you, I get angry
12:00
that something podcasting that essentially was
12:02
like ham radio. It really was
12:04
like dorky and kind of underground
12:06
and like this is where we'll
12:08
have conversations that aren't slick. Now
12:11
the bigger the guest I have, which is why
12:13
I asked it of you because you're very famous,
12:16
I was like, is David Duchovny going to play
12:18
ball? Because if I have like somebody's like,
12:20
who's your dream guest for the show? You
12:22
could say Matt Damon,
12:25
but I'd worry that Matt Damon has been
12:27
through the PR machine and he's just going
12:29
to know the and where to pull back.
12:31
But you know, like where's
12:34
your line? You
12:37
know, it just depends because like
12:40
I said, I've got kids, I've
12:42
got an ex, I've got people
12:44
in my life now, I've got a girlfriend.
12:47
You know, again, I do the calculus like, yeah,
12:50
I'd love to be honest and I'd love to help like
12:54
if what I could say could help or be funny
12:56
or whatever. But I also don't want
12:58
it to rebound on me. I
13:00
have not had good experiences in the
13:03
public sphere with being understood. I've
13:05
been misunderstood a lot and there's
13:07
no way I can
13:09
make myself understood. It just has to happen
13:11
naturally. Is there a mantra that you carry?
13:14
Like if you're feeling like you're
13:16
slipping into some old pattern, is there something that
13:18
snaps you back into the David
13:20
you want to be? Is
13:22
there some advice that you've received? Whether
13:25
it's about addiction or marriage or relationships or
13:27
not, but that's what
13:29
I'm in the market for is like those things that can help
13:31
to you. I guess
13:34
I'm interested in and what
13:36
I'm interested in my podcast as well
13:38
is a shame,
13:41
you know, just how
13:46
difficult it is to figure
13:53
it out in your own life, areas
13:55
in which you have been shamed or feel
13:57
shame. To
14:00
go into those. To
14:02
go into those the. Areas.
14:06
A Even if it's just sex
14:08
or divorce, there's a lot of
14:10
same and bob at and I'm.
14:13
Same. Just kind of keeps upon
14:15
itself. You know, I kind of grows
14:17
exponentially in some weird way. Of course
14:19
it. and. That's.
14:22
The killer for me is like a
14:24
my my adult life has been. Why
14:27
do I feel ashamed? For.
14:30
Nothing. And. How
14:33
that same grows and then the it and
14:35
then act the same kind of. Pushes.
14:38
Me to behave in ways that
14:40
I. Don't. Feel are constructive,
14:42
were are loving or us or anything
14:44
like that. So that's been my my,
14:46
oh yeah, don't really have a mantra.
14:49
Ah, been as the some great twelve
14:51
step Montrose, but I already have one.
14:53
I mean I love expectations of future
14:55
resentments though. Be good for you on
14:57
this podcast Year for I like that.
15:01
And number of it? Yeah, As
15:03
so in others, there's good little touchdowns and
15:05
I find them and poetry as well as
15:07
such as like. Self. help type stuff
15:09
what I. Am. A reader. And
15:12
then I I find literature and
15:14
philosophy is like philosophy or final
15:16
religion as well. So there's There's
15:18
been so much riding in and
15:20
thinking and religion about. The.
15:22
Very nature of our our same as humans
15:25
original sin. I don't watch one call it
15:27
but it there are many different name for
15:29
it and that's been kind of. My.
15:32
Interests as an adult. As
15:34
an adult creator me to it's read
15:37
on below and kissed. I don't feel
15:39
like. You. Know it
15:41
doesn't sound like the funniest. Kind
15:43
of a concept to go out, but
15:45
it's it's. super funny. What
15:48
Is super funny? She. Said
15:51
ah fuck that noise as well. Were
15:53
trying to salvage through entertainment a lot
15:55
of the time. I mean, wouldn't you
15:57
say. You.
16:01
Know I had this guy government say
16:03
on my podcast that he's an amazing
16:05
addiction specialist and a a therapist than
16:07
I am a doctor. And.
16:10
It has bought them as a normal that we were
16:12
talking about. He said you know. All.
16:14
This traumatic shit happens between the ages of zero
16:17
and three. Like if you can get your kid
16:19
to three. Without.
16:21
Without fashion, I'm up in arms. You're
16:23
fine soon. And the so it's not
16:25
even like it's not even like the
16:27
shit you remember either. Get it is
16:29
what. we're kind of fucked because where
16:31
we we do have the shit we
16:33
can process since we were conscious and
16:36
we could put words on it. But
16:38
then there's other stuff like that lack
16:40
of attachment or or neglect that happens
16:42
between zero and three and and and
16:44
where I think we're very sensitive animals
16:46
and and lot of that stuff can.
16:48
Can. Happen to us before we can even put a
16:50
finger on. I. Completely agree at
16:52
allen Day Button and I some funny
16:55
I had a lane do but off
16:57
I don't even know. You know I'm
16:59
talking about yeah. He. I'm gonna
17:01
put this, you just blew me away when I
17:03
heard it. To. Talking about shame you
17:05
like why am I this way? Why am
17:07
I this way and I'm not looking to
17:09
blame, but I'm looking to understand And he
17:12
says, you can tell a person's mental health
17:14
by how badly they wanna be famous. And
17:16
when I when I heard that I was like
17:18
I knew I was fucked up. Not in a
17:21
bad way and not even in a finger pointing
17:23
way. But it was like yes you said attachment.
17:26
There. Was something just a little bit
17:28
off. Everybody was doing their best, but
17:30
there is something that was often. Nobody
17:32
gets into a business like I heard
17:34
you talking about. When you're working you
17:36
have what you called what's next disease.
17:38
Knowing it's like. It's not
17:40
even really about getting on the X files
17:42
and is enjoying add. It's like. Yeah,
17:45
I'm not putting words in I'm out am
17:47
saying for me it there's a temptation to
17:50
go. Let's fill the hole. Keep filling the
17:52
whole keep falling whole, keep proving that were
17:54
worthy that we're not shameful. I get this
17:56
way was stand up. I'll.
17:58
Be feeling like. Broken.
18:01
And weird I feel like a frankenstein on
18:03
the beach. like everybody's having fun on the
18:05
beach and I'm just like a monster and
18:07
I going to stand up. Strangers laugh the
18:10
hear me they understand me, I exist, really
18:12
exist, Where to gather? It's. Like
18:14
I took fifteen Xanax. I
18:16
feel fantastic for several days,
18:18
but. That that's is, that
18:20
is what is it. I'm not mad at
18:22
that, but I will also say I don't
18:24
think that's the healthiest or the most normal
18:27
situation Duel a spin up. Is this the
18:29
healthiest for you? It will deter me from.
18:31
Yeah, it it does. I'm not mad at
18:33
it. A lot of people think strategy. right?
18:35
Before as coping strategies
18:37
go, it's it's. productive.
18:40
You know it's it's It may not
18:42
ever work as long as you wanted
18:44
to and there may be urged a
18:46
deeper answer Butcher that you will find
18:48
or that you find one day or
18:50
are you don't? Yeah, But. They're
18:52
all just coping strategies was
18:54
whatever kind of. Discomfort
18:57
We have worked with ourselves. It's
18:59
how I don't know if I
19:01
would agree with. The
19:04
buttons a statement of being
19:06
you know, putting on Spain,
19:08
but he's definitely. His.
19:10
Deadly got a singer on some button which
19:12
is you know this? this desire to his
19:15
You know he is kind of the need
19:17
to be objectified and away you know it's
19:19
it's it's an impersonal kind of a. Approach.
19:22
To being loved is being of by
19:24
strangers are being loved by and isn't
19:27
that safe right? It's safe as we
19:29
keep it Paris social ties with as
19:31
means. we were objectified. At some point
19:34
some point we became objects to ourselves.
19:36
You know, like when we will stop
19:38
being subjects. We stopped. Validating.
19:45
Are subjective nurse and away on as
19:47
the sign spoken Know it it a.
19:50
But. You. Know just the
19:52
idea that you know you could sit in your
19:54
skin and enjoy the day and enjoy the sensations
19:57
coming your way and the people in your life
19:59
and just. The objects just be are
20:01
thinking feeling heartfelt social thing know I'm
20:03
an object. I'd been objectified in some
20:06
way and I aware that a my
20:08
life I was comfortable from a very
20:10
young age being watched and I don't
20:12
know what that comes from the you
20:14
know it's it was in sports. I
20:17
liked being in front of a crowd. I like
20:19
playing sports in front of people. Are
20:22
not comfortable with it. So the something
20:24
in me that was comfortable being an
20:26
object and that contains to this day
20:29
I guess that's funny. I just Sir
20:31
John C. rallied to the pot and
20:33
he was. In my mind famously
20:35
disagreed with the statement. but going with what you're
20:38
talking about what had the and senators got everybody
20:40
know they ask every actor the dead the show
20:42
as on this question Ted Danson as is called
20:44
that I love He does it take he walks
20:46
back to his other actors and he goes is
20:49
an acting embarrassing and I find that really funny.
20:51
That. It's like. Pretending.
20:53
Is kind of a transparent thing to
20:56
do meaning. Everyone knows.
20:58
You. Didn't just see an alien that turned
21:00
into a lizard like you were faking it.
21:03
So to me as as kind of a
21:05
performer when I do acting I find like
21:07
a lot of my job is getting over.
21:10
The. Sort of. Embarrassment.
21:12
Of. Playing. Pretend but it sounds
21:14
like. You. Like being watched. You feel
21:16
that way as an actor like it's not embarrassing.
21:18
It's natural. it's normal. Like a look at this.
21:23
Oil: Are you kind of like are you still
21:25
David Going like this is kind of weird. I was
21:27
just talking though. I've always been embarrassed by it.
21:31
And I have. I would have a president embarrassed
21:33
by the need. To. Get a need.
21:35
What? About actually doing it is that embarrassing
21:38
as well. It's
21:40
silly. You know, That
21:44
sort of what I'm getting out. Maybe that's a
21:46
better way. That doesn't mean it's not beautiful. Yes, Yes,
21:48
I. Know. It all silly.
21:50
the silliest things. know the most beautiful
21:53
things. I mean it. It's what, What?
21:55
I. I. mean
21:57
it it's more beautiful for for being ridiculous
21:59
And it obviously has a value in the
22:01
culture because
22:07
people pay us a bunch of money to
22:09
do it. So there's a service that's going
22:11
on. People love stories. They like to see
22:13
people go through stories. I
22:16
understand it's like a service. Like
22:18
it's not curing anything,
22:21
but we're storytelling animals and
22:23
we like to see the stories. We
22:26
love that. We wanna go on those
22:28
rides. And that's legitimate. It's legitimate to
22:30
be in the center of something like that. But
22:33
I think when
22:36
I think about why I became an actor, aside
22:39
from like talking about objectifying myself,
22:44
it's also, I grew up
22:47
kind of being an intellectual kid.
22:49
I was an athlete, but my
22:51
mother really drove home the
22:56
need for me to do well in school,
22:58
mostly because it was
23:00
just a safety net for life, that
23:03
I'd get a decent job. Or
23:06
she came from no money. My father came from no money.
23:09
But I was raised by my mom and it was very, you
23:12
know, the gutter. She's Scottish. She'd always wind
23:14
up in the gutter if you
23:17
don't get this A or that A or
23:19
whatever. And it was stressful, stressful. It
23:22
sounds laughable when I say it
23:24
out loud now, but it's stressful
23:27
for a kid. And again, I'm not blaming
23:29
her. She
23:31
came from a tough, tough time. Right.
23:34
But we can honor, I relate to that.
23:37
I was so stressed out in school, I had a bald spot
23:39
on the side of my head. I was just like, this is
23:41
life and death. So while I appreciate,
23:44
as I did, saying we're not
23:46
pointing fingers, we're not making ourselves
23:48
victims or whatever, we can all honor.
23:50
Like when you're little and you
23:52
were little, even in high school, you're still little.
23:55
It's like, you can't differentiate what is and isn't
23:57
the end of the world. No,
23:59
I Don't. The be another they're they're
24:01
doing brain studies now and the other
24:03
I've got a twenty one year old
24:05
son in. Their people tell me like
24:08
the male brain isn't isn't complete until
24:10
twenty five are some ridiculous I that's
24:12
why Enterprise while a rent a car
24:14
and software package I'd get a just
24:16
made that up a sir I Target
24:19
welcome to Buy Gonna get my be
24:21
twenty five months and I'm a fast
24:23
as a spell. But
24:25
for me like getting back to what
24:28
I would without games to say about.
24:30
What You know what acting means to me
24:32
aside from being silly and I love Marlon
24:34
Brando my favorite actor and he hated acting
24:36
I think is dangerous but he thought of
24:38
it is ridiculous and wearing makeup and all
24:40
the stuff he knows like what a what
24:42
a ridiculous way from and a make a
24:44
living. And. And.
24:48
He's. Like my Touchstone. But.
24:51
For. Me coming out of like
24:53
and and intellectual. Background.
24:55
Where emotions were not. Bitcoin
24:58
around. You know I'm A wasn't A.
25:00
what I felt wasn't the important thing
25:02
is what I thought was important that
25:05
I stumbled. I was can be writing
25:07
and I stumbled into acting classes. I
25:09
thought I should learn something about. Acting
25:12
if I was going right for the
25:14
stage or screenplays. Whatever it is I
25:16
thought I was going to be doing
25:18
and. Blonde. The
25:21
whole i was in this world where
25:23
that was the thing that got a
25:25
validated for was not what you thought,
25:27
what you felt. And.
25:30
All these exactly the deficit right? I mean
25:32
does your we are when the playground now.
25:34
Were. Absolutely. And And and.
25:37
Ah, As. A. Way.
25:40
I can. I can do
25:42
all these things and nobody's gonna get hurt. Him
25:45
yeah is you know my mom Save
25:47
a mom. Tough, tough
25:49
life. A fragile. You.
25:52
Know. Found. A depression. ah
25:55
so me being contrary
25:58
or me having
26:00
problems in my life were not cool.
26:03
That wasn't part of the deal. I
26:05
was going to be perfect. But
26:08
here was a space where that shit
26:10
didn't fly at all. It
26:12
was the opposite and nobody got hurt. I
26:15
didn't hurt my mom. I didn't hurt
26:17
the other actors. I
26:19
could yell in their face
26:21
and feel the anger that I
26:24
felt underneath it all. Then
26:27
we go out and hug. It all
26:29
felt amazing. Everything
26:32
you're saying is so beautiful. And it helps me
26:34
understand. So my wife left me when I was
26:36
28. That's what crashing is about.
26:39
And we did this scene where
26:41
we had this big fight and Jed is
26:43
directing. And Jed loves a good relationship fight.
26:46
So he's turning up the volume. I probably
26:48
wrote it very like how it happened. Did
26:50
he have the microphone yet? Honestly,
26:52
it's one of my greatest acting achievements. Thank
26:55
you for asking, is that he stopped directing
26:57
us during the fight and he told me
26:59
afterwards that that was the tip of the
27:01
hat. So thank you for that self-serving moment.
27:03
Because I felt so proud. It was one
27:05
of the first acting things I did. It
27:07
was very emotional. And he was like not
27:10
interjecting with the mic. Which Jed sort
27:12
of famously, I think McKay too, they
27:15
yell out lines into the mic. Yeah, they're just yelling
27:17
out alts. Which is awesome. Every
27:19
one of them is a little young. I loved it. There
27:22
was one time he yelled out in all, I
27:24
didn't understand it. And I just said it like
27:26
a question. That's
27:28
a good man. Did it make
27:31
the movie? Was this the bubble? Yeah,
27:33
it was the bubble. I don't know if
27:35
it made it in, but I'm having a
27:37
scene with Leslie Mann, who plays my on-again,
27:39
off-again wife. And it's his wife. We've
27:44
adopted a boy, like a
27:47
10-year-old boy, just to make us
27:49
look good. We're fucked up
27:52
actors. So we've adopted this
27:54
Latinx boy to make us look like
27:56
we're cool. And
27:58
I clearly have not. that much interest in them.
28:01
And I'm just trying to bed
28:03
Leslie again in the scene. And
28:06
I'm saying, you know, she's saying, don't look at me like
28:08
that. I'm like, I don't even know, how am I looking
28:10
at you? You know what you're doing.
28:12
And I'm not doing anything. And
28:16
Judd goes, and she goes, okay,
28:18
we're only gonna talk about our son, okay?
28:22
And I can't remember the kid's name.
28:25
But Judd goes, well,
28:28
our son looks really good in that
28:30
dress tonight. But
28:34
I didn't get it. I was like sitting there out there on the
28:36
scene and I was like, well, our
28:38
son looks really good in that
28:40
dress tonight. That is great. That,
28:44
and you said it anyway. Yes, I think.
28:46
That's just to your director. Incredible, I
28:48
love that. So to your point though,
28:51
in real life, when my real wife
28:53
really left me, I was very
28:55
quiet. You know, you're bringing up all
28:57
these thoughts as a
28:59
child. I don't wanna like get
29:02
into your shit, but
29:04
how open are you gonna be with me? Very
29:07
good. David D'Acavre.
29:10
So when she, you're
29:13
saying she left you, it was just,
29:15
she lowered the boom, said, I'm leaving
29:17
and you're quiet, or was it a
29:19
process of? Well, it was, I
29:22
can tell this story, I think pretty quickly, we were living
29:24
in Brooklyn because I wanted to be a comedian and she
29:26
had been following me around. I started
29:29
noticing this distance. We moved to Sleepy
29:31
Hollow, New York. Yeah, yeah. Tarrytown basically.
29:34
Yeah. Because she was from the country and she wanted to
29:36
be in the country. I was like, oh, this will fix
29:38
everything. We go up there and it gets worse. There's more
29:40
and more distance. Like you can feel
29:42
it. I was a baby boy, I was 28 years
29:45
old, so I didn't know what was going on. Looking
29:48
back, the signs were everywhere. You're in bed with backs to
29:50
each other and you're just like, what the fuck? I
29:52
thought it was because we weren't seeing each other
29:55
because now I'm commuting into New York City to
29:57
do three minutes, literally three minutes of standup comedy,
29:59
11. 11 p.m. in the
30:01
village and then going back two hours
30:03
with hell, I go home and she's
30:06
distant and I'm like, well, this move
30:08
isn't working. Lo
30:10
and behold, she was having an affair. She
30:12
had been having an affair. She tells me,
30:15
and I was like the picture of
30:17
Naivety, I just didn't know. I didn't
30:19
see it coming at all. And there
30:21
was no fight because to your point,
30:23
growing up as kids, that feeling like
30:25
there isn't enough room for my feelings.
30:27
Again, everybody did the best they could,
30:29
but I felt more like the
30:32
lion tamer for other
30:34
people's feelings. So having learned
30:36
that pattern, here's this devastating moment, there's no
30:39
fight. There's no moment of like, how dare
30:41
you? I trusted you. There's none of it.
30:44
Cut to all these years later
30:46
doing crashing and yelling
30:48
and letting it out and saying things
30:51
that you felt. So exactly
30:53
to your point, I was like, this
30:55
is wonderful. People pay
30:57
in therapy to do role
30:59
playing like that because it heals
31:01
you. Which actually
31:04
goes back to what you said earlier about acting.
31:06
It's like, we're not curing anything. I
31:08
don't want to be too self-involved actors,
31:10
but I would say, you mentioned poetry.
31:12
I know you're into literature. How
31:15
many times has your heart been healed by Mary
31:17
Oliver? How many times has whoever
31:20
your person is probably prevented
31:22
a disease
31:24
from forming because you felt represented on
31:26
a page of a book, right? I
31:28
mean, that happens. Oh
31:31
yeah, of course. And
31:34
I hope this doesn't sound super
31:36
egotistical, but it happens with my
31:38
own work sometimes, like when it's
31:40
good enough. And
31:42
especially having written novels now,
31:44
and it's just to hold it in my
31:46
hand and to look at
31:48
some of the passages that I would have forgotten.
31:53
And I'll go, I'm
31:55
happy leaving that behind. My
31:58
thoughts turn to death a lot. I'm
32:00
not being morbid, but I think about what I
32:02
leave behind. Not that it really
32:04
matters. I don't like talking about life,
32:06
I can see, and shit like, I always, like, what athletes
32:08
talk about that, I don't like, shut the fuck up, you
32:10
know. Bears, who cares about
32:12
the legs? But I'm happy
32:15
that I'm leaving some expressions behind,
32:17
some, whether it's in
32:20
some movies and television shows, or whether it's music,
32:22
or whether it's in the books. There's
32:24
parts that are really exactly
32:27
what I came here to do, you know? That
32:30
I'm looking through my own eyes and feeling with my
32:32
own heart, and thinking with
32:34
my own brain, and that's the, all
32:36
those things can come together occasionally. It's
32:39
super silly, and embarrassing.
32:42
But the vehicle might be silly, but the
32:44
results, sometimes I try to remember what
32:46
a movie meant to me when I was 17 years
32:49
old, you know what I mean? For me, it
32:51
was good to a hunting, I went and I saw it, it changed
32:53
my life. I was like, you can leave Boston? I'm from Boston. Like,
32:56
you can leave? Like, that
32:58
movie ends with Matt Damon doing
33:00
the impossible, which is leaving Boston.
33:03
Also, I mean, there's so many movies, Melania
33:05
has a great line where he goes, in
33:07
all Boston movies, the antagonist is Boston. Like,
33:10
it's like you're trying to just leave Boston.
33:12
And when I saw that in a movie,
33:14
so like, I'll do you one worse though,
33:16
meaning not egotistical, but to take it up
33:19
a realm. Richard Roy, the
33:21
Franciscan, he's a teacher of mine, and
33:24
he's a beautiful man, he says that the
33:26
meaning of life is to humbly and proudly
33:28
return what you've been given, right? So you
33:30
were given all of this experience, so there's
33:32
a paradox there, being humble about it, but
33:35
also being proud about it. That feels like acting
33:37
to me, that feels like writing to me. Like,
33:39
you should be kind of ashamed, and you sort
33:41
of are, it's a little embarrassing, but you do
33:43
it anyway. But we're in
33:45
this place that
33:47
is creation, and
33:49
is flow and expression,
33:52
and when you merge, and I
33:54
wanna put this all back to
33:56
you, but when you merge in
33:58
that river of movement, of
34:00
honest moving, if it's honest
34:02
acting, writing, directing, whatever you're doing, aren't
34:05
you sort of in sync with the nature
34:07
of reality? You're
34:14
in sync with something, you know. I think
34:16
you're in sync with... What
34:19
resonates to me, what you say is
34:23
giving back, because going
34:26
back to my mother again, and education, I
34:29
went to graduate school in English literature
34:31
to get a PhD. I
34:34
didn't get my PhD, but
34:36
I almost did, you know, I got close. So
34:38
I read book and
34:42
poems, and
34:44
I sat my aurals, and when
34:46
you sit your aurals for PhD,
34:49
you have to be responsible for 10 out of
34:52
12 subjects, and
34:56
those subjects are like Shakespeare
34:58
is one. Wow. This
35:01
is the oral exam. Yeah, you're gonna
35:03
wear it. It's an oral exam. You don't,
35:06
you have nothing with you, you might as
35:08
well be fucking naked, you know. You're talking,
35:10
you don't have a phone, it was before
35:12
phones anyway. You can't look anything up. Yeah,
35:15
and there's a board of scary, like, professor.
35:17
Board of scary professors. Yeah, and
35:19
they go, do they call you Mr. Dac company?
35:28
Mr. Dac aural
35:30
exam, and it was
35:33
snowing, because you
35:35
do two years of classwork and
35:37
teaching. Is this boring? I'm
35:40
loving this. Okay, so you do two
35:42
years of classwork. I actually
35:44
was just thinking you're going to be, I know
35:46
you already did your podcast, but you're great for
35:48
what it's worth now. Interrupting. But you do two
35:50
years of classwork. Go keep going. You're doing wonderful.
35:53
Two years of classwork, but you're also
35:55
a teaching assistant. And
35:59
apparently I had Sean Levy as one of my
36:01
students. Oh really? Much
36:03
later. I didn't remember him, but he was
36:05
one of many. So
36:13
they give you a full semester
36:15
after your two years to go
36:18
and just read. So
36:20
I'd spent the last five
36:22
months reading probably
36:25
10 to 12 hours a day
36:27
trying to shore up the gaps in
36:30
my knowledge for these 10 of 12 subjects. Like
36:33
I punted on Beowulf.
36:35
Like I knew I wasn't going to get that. So
36:38
I punted on a couple subjects, but I had
36:40
10 to do. And it's
36:43
like 19th century poetry, you know,
36:45
early novels. So these huge subjects,
36:47
all of Shakespeare, not just the
36:49
plays, but the poems and the
36:51
sonnets and everything. What? Because they
36:53
can go in, they can fuck
36:55
with you if they want to. It sounds like the
36:58
whole thing is designed to fuck with you. None of
37:00
this sounds like it's designed to make you succeed. I
37:03
mean, are we mad about this? I'm a little mad.
37:05
It's also just figuring. No, this is what I'm getting
37:07
at. Go ahead. I'm not mad at all. So
37:10
I'm mad. I'm walking
37:12
to that meeting on
37:16
High Street, New Haven. And
37:20
I just had the sensation that my head
37:22
was the size of a blimp because
37:25
it truly felt like that. I
37:27
couldn't get anything else in there. I mean,
37:29
I had just been reading for four months
37:31
every day. And in fact,
37:34
I was living with a woman at the time and
37:36
I wasn't paying a lot of attention to her. And
37:39
she came to find me in the library and there
37:41
was like three of us graduate students together. And
37:45
later that night I came home and she said,
37:47
I have to apologize because I saw the way
37:49
they look. And
37:51
I understand that. What you're
37:53
going through. Wow. I wanted
37:56
hail, malnourished.
38:00
Worried. Kind of a state.
38:03
So. I get in there and
38:05
the. Sunny. Way that the
38:08
the world's was fine I I passed
38:10
them and Emma in the scary professors
38:12
were were kind enough that they don't
38:14
actually trying to gotcha stuff. You know
38:17
they say they what's. In.
38:19
The best sense and and when I feel
38:21
like is wrong with American education as they
38:23
often test for what you don't know they don't
38:25
test for it. do now and then a nice
38:27
like to be a much better educational system.
38:29
If we tested for they do now. Get
38:33
them excited by what they now, rather than scared about
38:35
what. I don't know. I love that.
38:37
I love that. I've already trying to
38:39
tell me she's only five, but I try to
38:41
tell my daughter like. It's like
38:43
learning is stealing. Thank. You to make
38:45
it a sexy. That is a steal
38:47
a you taking these like a part
38:49
of his is stealing. Had sex in parts
38:52
are learning will will help you meet
38:54
people it'll get you better friends look any
38:56
better for food it was all your hotel
38:58
little get about. I know about that. it'll
39:01
get better hotels David I have to have
39:03
me to have no hotels food. the food
39:05
thing was weird will because you're gonna
39:07
get a better job. Okay, and
39:09
then you're going to be eating better food. Probably.
39:12
But it is certainly a to take it
39:14
back when I still had you. You are
39:16
going to make. Very. Interesting friends
39:18
and you And and it you know. I'm.
39:21
Also implying you're going to have better
39:23
relationships are gonna have in you're gonna
39:25
be interesting cause you. To
39:27
will be interesting yourself yeah that as
39:29
him back. Is. Like spock other
39:32
people? Yeah, Another arts yeah.
39:34
Show yourself some respect. And
39:37
put some good stuff in there. You.
39:39
Remind me here is Joseph Campbell. I remember
39:41
before he started teaching. When off into the
39:43
woods it's like that mythic. Yeah,
39:46
I'd have a trope and you did that
39:48
you read for twelve we taking notes, he
39:50
just cram hundred and up on shows like
39:52
an oven at. If. i run across
39:54
a book from that time that i was using they
39:57
all my notes or in the margins says when i
39:59
in a before we read electronically, you
40:01
could actually read with a pen.
40:04
I like reading with a pen because I like
40:06
having thoughts and writing with a margin, even if
40:08
I never come back to it. But
40:11
what I was getting to from
40:13
the beginning of that story was
40:16
you mentioned humbly and
40:18
proudly giving back. Returning
40:21
what you've been given, yeah. Returning what you've been
40:24
given. So it took me, I
40:28
published my first novel when I was 55. So
40:36
last year? Yeah, last
40:38
year. So it took me 30 years to
40:41
start to give that back. And
40:48
once I started to give it back, I realized
40:51
how deeply all that stuff was in
40:53
me and how much
40:56
I loved it and how much I loved
40:58
being in the conversation. And that's how
41:00
I see it. My work is a
41:02
conversation with what I was given. So
41:05
these books started a conversation in my head
41:07
and now I'm finally, and not that everybody
41:09
has to write a novel to have a
41:11
conversation, but that's my way
41:13
of joining the party and
41:16
saying I respect that party. And that
41:18
party means a lot to me. And
41:22
so yeah, I do respond to your
41:24
line about, even
41:28
though I can't get it right. No, you actually kind
41:30
of, I wouldn't say you improved
41:32
it, but you did make it quicker. Humbly
41:34
and proudly giving back is what you
41:36
said, which is returning what you've been given. So
41:38
you did make it a little more succinct. Weirdos,
41:41
I am so excited to introduce a
41:43
new pizza pick, which has improved the
41:46
quality of my sleep since the first
41:48
time I used it. I've been absolutely
41:50
hooked. It's a dramatic and drastic difference
41:52
in my life because it's dramatically and
41:55
drastically improved my sleep and it is
41:57
hostage tape. You've probably seen it on
41:59
so. social media, these guys are
42:01
everywhere. If you're like me, you
42:03
were skeptical, you thought mouth taping
42:05
was insane. Even if you've heard Dr.
42:08
Huberman talk about the benefits, even if
42:10
breathing through your nose means like
42:12
20% more oxygen, which is
42:14
incredible for your sleep, for your brain,
42:16
for your body. Even if mouth tape
42:18
reduces your risk of sleep apnea, even
42:21
if it helps with snoring, in
42:23
my case, eliminated it overnight, literally,
42:25
much to Val's delight and my
42:28
daughter's delight, even if it helps
42:30
with oral hygiene and bad breath,
42:32
I was still worried that if
42:34
I put on mouth tape, I
42:36
would feel trapped or claustrophobic or
42:38
would have restricted difficult breathing, but
42:40
I put it on and boom,
42:42
just like that, it was the
42:44
opposite. Immediately, your brain just gets
42:46
the message, oh, it's gentle. Oh,
42:48
I guess we're breathing through our
42:50
nose. No problem. Got it
42:53
done. I literally didn't think about it
42:55
until the morning when I was peeling
42:57
it off after an incredible night's rest
42:59
where I dreamt the whole night. So
43:01
not only did I feel fantastic and
43:04
ready to start my day, I had
43:06
literally memories of epic dreams and you
43:08
only dream when you're having deep restful
43:10
REM sleep. So I had proof right
43:12
there that my sleep had improved dramatically.
43:14
I went from a couple of dreams
43:17
here and there to a night of
43:19
dreams because of my deep, deep sleep
43:21
because of hostage, hostage tape.
43:23
I shed a kind of word because of
43:25
hostage tape. I tried it once. I'm hooked
43:28
for life. I've tried other brands in
43:30
the past and I hated it.
43:32
It was, it was the way it smelled,
43:34
the way it stayed on too strong. Hostage
43:36
tape is perfect. It doesn't smell like super
43:38
glue right under your nose and it's the
43:40
perfect mix of strong and gentle to take
43:42
off in the morning. Even if you have

do it. Honestly, I really, I'm not
46:29
looking. shut up and. Maybe
46:32
if I. If I'm
46:34
quoting something and I want to get
46:36
it right, I'll do that. World's gonna
46:38
paraphrase it, but I have so much
46:40
in my head still from that six
46:42
months of cramming that eight it looks
46:44
for places to come out. And
46:47
that is. You. Know is
46:49
it reminds me of Caso Thing, the great
46:51
artist Steel. It's like you're actually that what
46:53
actually is unique is the ball. It's not
46:55
what's in it, it's how those things dance
46:57
together. Now going to change the metaphor like
47:00
in the washing machine of your brain? Yeah,
47:02
he put all your tommy by call compost
47:04
heap. Even better, Hitherto.
47:06
Evolving. Yeah. It's shit.
47:09
It's all. It's all that shit
47:11
but in a sliding there it's
47:13
a beautiful dead shit is gonna
47:15
pack. Yeah, are expensive? Yeah, yeah
47:17
yeah. Ben. This is what
47:19
I would tell my kids cause they
47:22
they grew up just of the cusp
47:24
of on the phones were omnipresent. way
47:26
worse now. But.
47:30
You know, Yes, the phone has all the
47:32
knowledge you don't need to know these things.
47:34
And I hated memorizing dates and said like
47:36
that. I'm not talking about that. I'm.
47:41
But you need. You. Need a
47:43
lot of ideas in your head to
47:46
just sit there and are a lot
47:48
of stuff that doesn't seem interesting to
47:50
know if it's if it's all crammed
47:52
into that brainier as eventually they're gonna
47:54
knock and to each other and something
47:57
was going to spark. Anywhere,
47:59
Else. New for you're going
48:01
to happen That's exactly right. And isn't it
48:03
weird? Like why is something more interesting to
48:05
you that goes back to how you a
48:08
raise but you become this incredibly interesting. Searchlight.
48:11
Like your your own search engine, you and I
48:13
could listen to the same lecture and would write
48:15
down and underline a different thing. And.
48:17
It isn't that just exactly what we're
48:19
doing here. We're all holding different parts
48:21
of the mystery and somehow we all
48:23
come together. And. Hold. It all
48:26
up together. Pm and that's you
48:28
to go back to the the wound.
48:30
You know that that's what usually. You.
48:33

49:01
morning my wife and I went to coffee and
49:03
I was complaining about something my mother. Globe.
49:07
As just said, pretty innocently, but it really
49:09
set me off the rails. And I said
49:11
of Allah having had a coffee and a
49:13
little conversation a process that I was like.
49:16
Or at least I'll be useful now. Meaning.
49:19
We. Do podcast together My wife and I on Friday
49:21
and I do this by guess with you here it
49:23
is coming up. I'm like. I'm. Not
49:26
very useful in till I'm broken
49:28
broken. Pete is actually one of
49:30
my favorite. A
49:32
good he he got. Am I getting broken pay?
49:34
You might and oh yeah, this whole week. He.
49:37
Notices it's very Sigma Toyota was would
49:39
have with your mom or know I
49:42
will tell you know I had. My
49:44
parents had a very tumultuous relationship and
49:46
it's their fiftieth wedding anniversary and my
49:48
mom keeps asking me to do more
49:51
and more things like I'm going. And.
49:53
I and I keep telling her that's I go,
49:55
my presence is the present like that's what I'm
49:57
doing as he keeps asking me to like. Though
50:00
the ask that for some reason the was like
50:02
the third or fourth. And. By
50:04
the way, I. Don't know people
50:06
can judge this if they want. It's a
50:08
very complicated relationship that's a lot A So
50:10
when she was I can you print up
50:12
photos of me and dad for the party
50:14
and I just like. I. Basically
50:16
wideout, I am this close to
50:18
shaking that and then Vallas helping
50:20
me. She's going. Pete. And
50:23
again my parents I've I've done my
50:25
best to forgive them. It's an ongoing
50:27
process. I love them. I understand as
50:29
well as I can understand. but that
50:31
was the relationship that put me in
50:33
a crock pot and cooked me into
50:35
a to media Jesus Christ that somebody
50:38
that's not a natural thing away. What?
50:40
What? What? Why? Why
50:42
does you forgot about because suitors used
50:44
as hundred line or something to be
50:46
the party planner for a relationship that
50:48
is very complicated for me? Like will
50:50
you help us. Exotic. Watch
50:53
this whitewash it. Yes, it's It's
50:55
like. You. Know,
50:57
I don't want to overstate it, but it's like the
50:59
warden at the prison I used to go to being
51:01
like we were. You print up pictures of your time.
51:04
Remember. Those the art. And
51:06
have been. I'm exaggerating, but that is how
51:09
it feels to child Pete. you know nothing
51:11
about and I have to honor that child.
51:13
Be. That's. How he feels so
51:15
I start to white out and then
51:17
I. and then we unpack and and
51:19
cheops understand all that and ago that's
51:21
good because I know there's a lot
51:23
of people out there that are getting
51:25
flying off the handle at seemingly innocuous
51:28
things. Your. Mom as you to print
51:30
photos is not a big deal but we have these like.
51:32
Tsunami. Of response and that
51:34
is one of the it's but at
51:37
least I'm useful. I'm like I'm not
51:39
much use if I just walk around
51:41
going like and I've forgiven them and
51:43
everything. And I just
51:45
remembered as that long as they're they're at.
51:47
You know, I try. I try to remember
51:49
that at her core. My mother is the
51:51
exact same thing that I am. She's
51:54
just consciousness. I do that but that an
51:56
intellectual and and I need to bring it
51:58
into my body and my life is so
52:00
good at their vows. So good at that
52:02
is like she like touch she was having
52:05
me due to the coffee like to touch
52:07
your i have as much right is she's
52:09
grounding in the and she goes touch your
52:11
arms, you your extremities are getting no gun
52:13
and you're here now Exactly This resonates with
52:15
you. Yeah. My
52:18
girlfriend does summer things like that. She
52:20
was written like that her father would
52:22
would. Touch. her like that in
52:24
Lucknow did get or antibody. Yeah and
52:26
I'd never really I never seen that are heard
52:29
of. it was that he f t is that
52:31
would choose to I don't know I don't I
52:33
like this. Is at these
52:35
boys? One two, three, four, five, And
52:37
it doesn't matter I don't have like
52:39
that's because your your body goes into
52:41
for we just where i'm going to
52:44
throw this back to you might vow
52:46
was like fight, slight freeze and spawn
52:48
i forgot about fun. And.
52:50
My strategy has been meaning.
52:52
If I tell my parents they're the greatest in
52:55
the world, everything's a cop ascetic I never have
52:57
spotted on the reading of Iraq was part of
52:59
it. Me neither I thought it was a d
53:01
or thoughts are saying fun like a boss and
53:03
guy for on. That that's what a
53:05
long island but lots of boss and very similar.
53:07
yeah but out. But these coping strategies of of
53:09
going like just tell everybody that they're the best.
53:12
No room for your feelings or that's are stuffed.
53:14
Can him send it back out so you go
53:16
for it helps you get your body that's interesting.
53:18
Tell me what? Tell me what that made you
53:20
think of. Well when you were
53:22
saying that it made me think of this discussion
53:24
I had was. Job. Or another
53:27
that the government's yeah
53:29
far as because he's
53:31
a. He's like eighty
53:33
and the and his books that
53:36
we talk about he talks about.
53:39
His wife not picking of up
53:41
at the airport when she should
53:43
have and he's super tests on
53:45
his sky. Who's supposed to. Handle.
53:48
all the shit that up it's one
53:50
of the yeah know where it's at,
53:52
were talking about that and and. You
53:55
know for him, And I hope
53:58
I'm not getting i'm wrong and that may be. It
54:00
doesn't hate me, but for him. It's
54:03
lengthening the period between the
54:05
poke and the response. And.
54:08
Know it's it's because you never not
54:10
going to have the response that's that's
54:12
the false hope is like guess I'm
54:15
gonna get to that point where And
54:17
that's what Scientology. Is the
54:19
promise of where I'm not reactive? You'll
54:21
never had the reactive mind. Yeah, won't
54:23
have the react of mine. I'll be.
54:25
I'll be. I'll be the
54:27
actor, not the reactor. Frank? Not
54:29
possible. Like a special if that
54:31
happened pre verbal A it is is
54:33
soccer have but you can lengthen. The.
54:36
Time between. You.
54:38
Getting triggered and you lashing out or
54:40
leaving your body. Whatever it is that
54:43
your workout program however it's and then
54:45
you know. obviously you have somebody you've
54:47
chosen your wife's to help you to
54:49
regulate. Yeah so that's great to the
54:51
have somebody to help but you can
54:53
do south as well into a loan.
54:56
Yeah. To me, I'd gotten
54:58
so much mileage. Now to saying this,
55:00
you as you know you new pal.
55:02
The. Newly breath and in the long run
55:04
out the mouth I can't get over it.
55:07
I it it helps so much I heard
55:09
a doctor he roman talking about. it's it
55:11
lowers, your court is all. right?
55:13
Pretty incredibly so after that text, I'm in
55:16
the car drive. Nope. I guess I'm just
55:18
going to. Like.
55:20
I am alone in the car so who cares?
55:22
and I'm I'm telling you, Ten fifteen it I
55:25
was and your body starts to come back. Online.
55:28
And I was like poor little
55:30
pete. You and I loved to
55:32
known that he wouldn't allow seven year old
55:35
be What a fucking filled to know that
55:37
what had several beat them. He font. Seven.
55:40
Year old he'd find and any performed
55:42
he knows on a he got funny
55:44
and this is maybe when I learned
55:46
to be an object. You know the
55:48
mean lights? There's. Nothing.
55:50
And again and putting this back to you, it's like.
55:53
If I can get everyone last saying what
55:55
is more. Comforting. Then
55:58
getting the. I. Grew up
56:00
in a house where they were. there's alcohol
56:03
involved, there's tension, and then we go up
56:05
and clubs and there's alcohol. Their attention and
56:07
I and I turn them in the exact
56:09
same way I was. I'm. Not
56:11
going to say broken but in the
56:13
back of the crime back they always
56:15
come back to mess with a trenchcoat.
56:18
They always come back. We do you
56:20
look at be. I
56:24
knew you'd be back. Be. Just. A
56:26
matter of time, but it's a it's a
56:28
role play to go like. I know how
56:30
to com this dinner down and I know
56:32
how to com them the Miami Improv them.
56:35
About. The sphere. Of
56:37
not being funny when you know that
56:39
ship or but that's here I would
56:41
say I can see what is your
56:43
taxable in I can be great artists
56:45
if you go to the Shrank. Strongly
56:47
disagree. Yeah, I'm not even going for
56:49
a mentally while. I'm gone for straight
56:51
up spiritual realization that unlike the more
56:53
I clear up my shit about it
56:55
later I am. Now. It's
56:57
like who made that. Idea:
57:00
The Devil. Enough repeated shit
57:02
like that. idea. Ah. Maybe.
57:06
Because there's a lot of bad shrinks out
57:08
there, you know? So yeah, they can do
57:10
some harm in that way. You know they
57:12
don't plans on the practitioner like our I
57:15
really feel like. Bodies. Of
57:17
Knowledge. There's so many good ones out there,
57:19
it just depends on whoever is. Teaching.
57:22
Him: Yeah, no And and. And.
57:25
Why I'm missing Scientology again Because I have
57:27
no interest in in and I would have
57:29
been it. But if if you got guy
57:31
who's a great teacher in the app as
57:33
reducing scientology still get some good shit out
57:36
of it. yeah discuss the great teacher. Yet
57:38
as a when there's Buddhism or or or
57:40
Judaism christianity yes you teacher. Then.
57:43
You're going to learn. I. Completely agree to
57:45
in fact, Was. So funny.
57:47
I feel that way about your work as well
57:50
as I like hanging out with David. I know
57:52
you're playing roles but yeah but sometimes I think
57:54
as a comedian I say this all the time.
57:56
the jokes or an excuse to be in the
57:58
energy that were create. The together in a
58:01
row and I feel I way I was
58:03
watching Bucky Fuck Indent and it's wonderful and
58:05
I'm very happy for you that your book
58:07
is is becoming this movie age. Thank you.
58:09
And. When you come on. I
58:13
didn't know you are in it, I just threw it on
58:15
hours ago He directed at he wrote at your we are
58:17
and then you're the dad and as merely I don't want
58:19
to buddy or bread too hard but I go oh there's
58:21
that guy. When. I mean that
58:23
it was a familiar comforting oh,
58:25
I get to hang out witnesses.
58:28
I like that compost heap. It
58:30
as actually I like to put my seat in it.
58:33
Was set. Up
58:36
And I did. Go you, David Recovery,
58:38
Why don't you love is omitted? As
58:40
for analyzing means fertilizer Me when it
58:42
is. And well, that's right. I think
58:45
that's right. Yeah, like a date. Allen
58:47
De Botton also said, on a date,
58:49
you recognize wounds, are recognizing one another,
58:51
and there's something in the way that
58:53
you react as an actor that. Resonates.
58:55
With me that I go that's
58:58
authentic. I feel. Uncomfortable By
59:00
the things he feels uncomfortable. I
59:02
don't know if it's in the
59:04
eyes, it's in the faces in
59:06
the body. They're all these unconscious,
59:08
nonverbal things that my body goes.
59:11
Okay, I can, I can, I can
59:13
become. A part of this movie.
59:16
I see a place for me
59:18
in you. Wrote. Pretty.
59:20
Cool. As beautiful I I.
59:23
I don't want. I agree with you. Get three.
59:26
Unseemly butter. I get where you're
59:28
saying and I I was just thinking
59:30
about actors that I like. Being
59:33
in their space. Yeah. You know,
59:35
and. Sometimes.
59:38
The way it occurs to me is. Your.
59:41
As much as I don't know, as much
59:43
as I think acting is ridiculous whatever that
59:45
quote was are silly. Yeah, Or.
59:47
And I'm ashamed and in some ways
59:50
not occur muslims I'm sexual jokes now.
59:52
I love it though. The truth. it's
59:54
funny to me, it just makes you
59:56
happy. I'm. At
59:59
I say. I.
1:00:02
Really like actors who seem to
1:00:04
love acting. You have kids. Might.
1:00:07
Not be me. You know the
1:00:09
I love it on some level
1:00:11
that's not. John
1:00:13
Travolta to me like I just think
1:00:15
he loves acting. I just I watch
1:00:18
him and I just think he's having
1:00:20
so much fun, fear and like oh
1:00:22
man. I. Love being in that
1:00:24
space. Yeah, me too. It's not about
1:00:26
the acting that is it. A lot.
1:00:28
Killer or he just loves that man. I've
1:00:31
been so alchemy know that you might a
1:00:33
that he might hate it yet. Rocket is.
1:00:36
He's. He he loved the onset that day
1:00:38
in a year and and ops he's giving
1:00:40
it to me and downs on that love.
1:00:42
You know, the love of what you do.
1:00:44
Yeah, I agree. A I know
1:00:46
it's an inspired thing to see a person in the
1:00:49
state of non resistance. A Good I mean. That.
1:00:51
Guy's not mad that they kept him on
1:00:53
ice in his trailer for six. I have
1:00:55
no no no no themselves and of and
1:00:58
let me tell you I will let you
1:01:00
know when I'm resisting. You know out show
1:01:02
you in the performance that is so great
1:01:05
I'll let you off and as bad it's
1:01:07
bad Bad Bad I this is not morning
1:01:09
radio. You're a small act like you ear
1:01:11
Europe. While would you describe it, it's almost
1:01:14
like era. When.
1:01:18
As a small I mean you're You're doing
1:01:20
it with restraint. You're doing a kind of
1:01:22
cool. you're doing it school sounds wrong, and
1:01:24
I'm trying to compliments that, you know, doing
1:01:26
less. And I'm more interested.
1:01:30
I did you tell me it is a
1:01:32
very specific question? Are there times when you've
1:01:34
gone. Against. That that
1:01:36
being kind of a thing that you're known for one
1:01:38
of the things down for it's mates have you got
1:01:41
against it? May like a really big move and but
1:01:43
my god I hope they don't use that. Take. Oh.
1:01:45
Yeah, the certainly certainly that, but
1:01:48
has also been like roles that
1:01:50
I'll see. I'm taking
1:01:52
come my way where I go. Okay, this
1:01:54
is kind of a. Big. Swing
1:01:56
for me! And.
1:01:59
They they. Really mean. You
1:02:02
might not even see it as different, but. I
1:02:05
go back to like. Probably.
1:02:08
Like Zoolander? You know, that kind of
1:02:10
thing where I'm You know, this kind
1:02:12
of ridiculous character or or the Tv
1:02:14
said I feel like I'm a little
1:02:16
bigger and that or I'm. In
1:02:18
this. State I did a couple years
1:02:21
ago play really goofy funny character or I
1:02:23
played Howard Cosell on the History of the
1:02:25
Were all means like best Gray I'm another
1:02:27
thirty five seconds. But for me it was
1:02:29
like. Yeah well our camp
1:02:31
don't like sketch comedy economy are gay or
1:02:33
yes I've not done. Or when
1:02:36
I did as ah now I do enjoy it
1:02:38
as I like that kind of. I
1:02:40
like that I like tapping into that energy
1:02:42
which is not my natural yeah time. Artistic
1:02:45
way to go. With. It But
1:02:47
I do enjoy my due respect it and I and
1:02:49
I love it. Yeah, it's interesting when
1:02:51
I watch myself act ninety nine point
1:02:53
nine percent of the time and like
1:02:55
I wish I done less. And if
1:02:57
that's what did you come about your
1:03:00
style. From. Watching yourself Or was
1:03:02
it something you found in your shoes?
1:03:05
Yeah. I found it through through
1:03:07
failure. Really, I'm in. I'm. When
1:03:10
I got to L A. I.
1:03:12
Auditioned. My my manager has no longer
1:03:14
my mans overseas. The. She's.
1:03:17
To keep track of and helmet assists
1:03:19
the tell people how many auditions I didn't
1:03:21
get in, what. Have
1:03:23
you fire? It's first Natasha. I
1:03:25
like her way of giving me
1:03:27
a line or something, but. You.
1:03:30
And I said always seem like I'll have
1:03:32
to larger number but there was a lot
1:03:34
and I get. In.
1:03:36
I get the feedback in a river.
1:03:39
When you're always getting feedback member feedback
1:03:41
he back and see by a city
1:03:43
back asleep I can defeat. Feedback is
1:03:45
not get. The feedback as. Feedback
1:03:48
is great. Feedback as great as as as than
1:03:51
is not going to you with a C by
1:03:53
guy. Get it either direction. But they absolutely loved
1:03:55
the of beloved they really want actually about that
1:03:57
by the way that works on me when my
1:03:59
age and goes they loved you. I'm lion a
1:04:01
loving them. They know I'm gonna handle a degree
1:04:04
of a job I live over there. I don't
1:04:06
get a job that was enough that would have
1:04:08
gone for is wonderful of. That's.
1:04:10
Right now a job gather at
1:04:12
it dialed and so I get
1:04:14
the. Flat. A
1:04:16
movie star and was one I got a
1:04:18
lot like because I was auditioning for like
1:04:20
television say i his movie Star Wars I.
1:04:23
And I can't make my rent in.
1:04:25
I'm not a movie star. I'd like
1:04:28
to be like this tv job. so
1:04:30
I knew what I was doing was.
1:04:33
Because back then there was a distinction.
1:04:35
This is like Nineteen Eighty Nine Ninety
1:04:37
Ninety. In there was a pretty strong
1:04:39
distinction between T V. acting him back.
1:04:42
And and X files so change at N
1:04:44
Y P D Blue allowed to die of
1:04:47
of yeah yeah, little bit around us yeah
1:04:49
and then of course you know cable. Yeah
1:04:51
that. and and now the distinction is is
1:04:53
a race and may maybe even be weighted
1:04:56
the other way. Now where you know it,
1:04:58
do more than I am Beggars Star If
1:05:00
you're on a huge as is dances a
1:05:02
bigger star budget, the work you can do
1:05:05
is more speaking be more subtle actually and
1:05:07
in a rather than a ventures twenty two
1:05:09
or wherever in a race like rate. A
1:05:12
mit waited the other way now.
1:05:14
but then. You know Tv
1:05:17
was serve in I don't want a bad
1:05:19
mouth says that I love like Star Trek
1:05:21
or whatever but it was. It was considered.
1:05:24
The same caliber as great some acting like I
1:05:26
got it was a volume medium. I was like
1:05:28
we can do a thousand of these right? right?
1:05:30
As opposed to breaking Bad. Which. Is
1:05:32
reminding me of the X Files episode that
1:05:34
had yeah, that's that's where Brian med dance.
1:05:37
That's when I. Yeah, that's right it. yeah.
1:05:39
Exiles was the beginning of breaking that I
1:05:41
forget the last. Yeah, so cool. Yeah.
1:05:44
I'm. You. Have as
1:05:46
was going to is one of those actors in that car. And it
1:05:48
wasn't me, it was. So
1:05:51
are you integrate? Walter White
1:05:53
know shit. You. Would have
1:05:55
been a great Walter White. Vince's
1:05:57
again I'm sorry. Oh yeah, but.
1:06:00
So yeah I were I would get erm. Flat.
1:06:03
A. From. Flat
1:06:05
was the negatives. Movies
1:06:08
I was positive. Ah,
1:06:10
and. I. Just
1:06:13
knew. I'd
1:06:15
even if. Or his
1:06:17
He's doing nothing In a he's not doing anything.
1:06:19
Isn't And yeah, yeah,
1:06:22
And they're. Given.
1:06:25
It was like. If I thought I was
1:06:27
being dead pan funny. Which. Is
1:06:29
something I aspire to like Buster Keaton, the
1:06:31
sight of God to me, and stuff like
1:06:34
that. So I'm. But.
1:06:36
I knew. That
1:06:38
I was up to something, I knew I was
1:06:40
doing something. And I
1:06:43
knew possibly. I
1:06:45
had to work on my craft a little more
1:06:47
so that. People. Could say it.
1:06:50
But. I also know that that was
1:06:52
my natural like. Wavelength.
1:06:55
From that was two hours. Gonna do it like
1:06:57
that was my. Take on acting
1:06:59
was going to be doing it this way. Was
1:07:01
it because you hadn't seen it where you like?
1:07:03
I gotta. I know this is real because it's
1:07:05
me and I haven't seen it so many keep
1:07:07
ringing the bell. Yeah. It.
1:07:09
Was I that. Night. And look at
1:07:12
it. I I was got fired for love
1:07:14
one of the first movies I I. I
1:07:18
got called the Rapture. In this
1:07:20
is a really good. Independent
1:07:22
movie like Ninety Nine, Day In and.
1:07:25
I got sent home or dailies to like.
1:07:28
I don't recover out was phrase but as basic
1:07:30
like you Tagalog or how bad you are or
1:07:32
something like that. And.
1:07:36
I invited my friend dinah care
1:07:38
of as a writer. At
1:07:41
it and so can you watch these with me.
1:07:43
Because I I am not going to be able
1:07:45
to look at it objectively and I just need
1:07:47
to know. If
1:07:50
I should quit or what I'm
1:07:52
in no real else. I didn't
1:07:54
feel good. Yeah. And
1:07:56
I we watch Dailies and we're both
1:07:59
like yeah, you. Yeah.
1:08:01
It's good. You're fine, is gonna sound
1:08:03
bite damn damn with faint praise, but
1:08:05
we're both like your your girl dear
1:08:07
finder you know your your legitimate actor.
1:08:09
I mean I. I buy it whenever.
1:08:12
I'm. So
1:08:15
even when I was starting to work,
1:08:17
there was. There
1:08:19
was a little. Push. Back I
1:08:21
guess and you know some of that. I
1:08:23
don't. They fire you, Did you turn it
1:08:26
out on I'm I'm a member of Live
1:08:28
Spite Of. How does not?
1:08:30
They was too late for every fired you.
1:08:32
Who is the number one call? Who's the?
1:08:35
If literati get a job they go to
1:08:37
a rough allow. Who did I go to?
1:08:39
Whether they do and I don't know. nemesis?
1:08:43
Or that time he I've added and
1:08:46
for Billie Baldwin. Billie. Baldwin was
1:08:48
always Cuban. Yeah, Yeah. He was
1:08:50
seen as don't back draft. He was done
1:08:52
like his big moves are like that guy.
1:08:58
But. Ah right. Our rights, I wouldn't
1:09:00
have your style. Go ahead. My
1:09:02
daughter's acting. She's twenty four stone
1:09:04
quite well, but you know, like,
1:09:06
like all actors so. So. Sometimes
1:09:09
say no or that person by
1:09:11
person as I don't worry about
1:09:13
it because it's gonna change to
1:09:15
a regular, another new person to
1:09:17
get a his rights race. I'm
1:09:19
not trying to put down Bobcat
1:09:21
Goldthwait. He's a great writer director
1:09:24
now, but sometimes when someone flares
1:09:26
up in the comedy scene, people
1:09:28
go Bobcat Goldthwait because there was
1:09:30
a time again Bob All respect.
1:09:32
yeah it easy pal. I love
1:09:34
him. But. When he was
1:09:36
the number one stand up comedian. Yeah,
1:09:39
Don't forget the these things change and I
1:09:41
could name. A. Dozen more that
1:09:44
that that flare up and when it's happening
1:09:46
it seems like this is what it is
1:09:48
and then when it goes away. I just had
1:09:50
my friend Jonathan Kite on the show is like
1:09:52
what I do impressions and so funny. If
1:09:54
I do an impression of an actor who's
1:09:56
not currently in a movie people actually eat
1:09:58
it is like I'm doing. Giamatti again
1:10:00
because of the holdovers, but then
1:10:03
if Giamatti takes a little break.
1:10:05
Where. I want to hear Giamatti. I was
1:10:07
like were so fickle writer Giamatti my g
1:10:09
I he does it or you might as
1:10:12
well. Well. I didn't.
1:10:14
I get well as Sir David
1:10:16
to cover the battery. To say.
1:10:19
As. Much. as I understand this effect
1:10:21
but. Yeah
1:10:25
he's like always at the at the
1:10:27
end of his breath he's on his
1:10:29
at the end of his breath and
1:10:31
the end of his rope ladder is
1:10:33
a really all right he has insisted
1:10:36
on to explode you know why was
1:10:38
almost milder hurt like returns the grimace
1:10:40
the smile For this agreement it is
1:10:42
It is a great an easy way
1:10:45

Wasn't like almost Will Smith or something

1:15:19
There were just like two of us i

think that tested for they all much. As.

I recall and will you be Belly

Billie? Bonus! You
1:15:28
know Emmy, believe those really is really good and
1:15:30
were in. I have. Had it's

ups and downs and everything but term. Ya.
1:15:35
And for some reason I had in my

head like he was just his mom and
1:15:39
my lawn in I was like is get
1:15:42
married other top my lived with his his
1:15:44
own I'm sorry I interrupted you. We were
1:15:46
talking about how you arrived at your style,
1:15:48
your time at your daughter and and how
1:15:50
things change. That's how we went off on

that tangents. Did you feel completion on the.

What it did you say Dry? Small? What do
1:15:58
I don't know, I don't or doing of. Them.
1:16:01
The. Lesson our: I like I have
1:16:03
more. Yeah, maybe less is more. I
1:16:05
don't know, it's just the way I
1:16:07
do it And I'm not saying. It's
1:16:11
better than any other were or a or worse than any
1:16:13
other way or that I can't do any I was so
1:16:15
I would need. You know, how did.
1:16:18
Like. Help and
1:16:20
Support. To to to
1:16:22
come out at a different way and.
1:16:24
I'd love to. I'd love to try you
1:16:26
know, but I'm always going to try to
1:16:28
find that the truth and if it starts
1:16:31
to feel like just. I
1:16:34
guess the way I put it is like. If
1:16:37
if I feel like it's just a
1:16:39
point of view that I'm saying about
1:16:41
a character, like sometimes I feel like.
1:16:43
When. You get bigger when you go for things
1:16:46
and it's like. You. Must commenting
1:16:48
on it. You know an artist's
1:16:50
actually. Gallagher Boardwalk caricature.
1:16:53
You're. You're exaggerating it to make it. My
1:16:55
answer would so that the that the
1:16:57
people can hear can hear and in
1:16:59
and that's legitimate. You know that has
1:17:01
led to hear stuff too but. Yeah.
1:17:04
Just depends on what you think your audience's. That's.
1:17:07
True, we need pop music. There's nothing wrong
1:17:09
with yes, that's right. Yeah, Spob, you pop
1:17:11
music business. We need house And you know,
1:17:14
maybe it'll get you into something else. something
1:17:16
more title or whatever. But like him riders,
1:17:18
who can? Yeah, I think
1:17:20
that's really fun. Do you get the U F O
1:17:22
question? Now that you of us are fucking everywhere? I
1:17:25
I. I do. But.
1:17:28
I am. I just have nothing interesting
1:17:30
to about it at a gay. People
1:17:33
must. It will then let me ask
1:17:35
you this. how do you find being
1:17:38
David to come the in in the
1:17:40
public sphere like people ask me about
1:17:42
your foes People wanna have saved this
1:17:44
or that You enjoy. This life.
1:17:47
That you've built a word. Had a
1:17:49
hard. It's
1:17:53
funny because I think I i spoke earlier
1:17:55
about. Being. Misunderstood.
1:17:57
And how painful that is. How Painful.
1:18:00
That is, and. I.
1:18:02
Guess initially. When.
1:18:05
I was misunderstood for my character.
1:18:07
You know which is a. Ton.
1:18:09
Understandable thing you know to that's
1:18:11
how people. Know
1:18:14
me? And you will either mother. Yeah.
1:18:17
Yeah yeah. And.
1:18:20
When I misunderstood, what do you mean would
1:18:22
you like think that I'm older lady with
1:18:24
people mistaking you for malaria? It's. Not
1:18:26
Robin Williams. Get a More key. What
1:18:28
a heap. Remember I have story. He
1:18:31
won an Academy award next running. send
1:18:33
him yelled hey more can he was
1:18:35
eighty Another exchange right? right? So bad.
1:18:38
At it in like the heyday of it. As
1:18:42
the suggests. You know
1:18:44
and people don't think that I'm older
1:18:46
but cell phone? Call me that or.
1:18:49
Or. They'll ask me questions about your foes
1:18:51
or or your think that that I'm interested
1:18:54
in it. So at first it was. Frustrating.
1:18:57
Cause. The ego
1:19:00
army was like I'd like. I'm
1:19:02
way more interesting than that fucking
1:19:04
i haven't you question. We ask
1:19:06
me what I think about things
1:19:08
that I'm interested in. Arrive, Pay.
1:19:11
But. As city, ego and
1:19:13
and immaturity and eventually. Mostly
1:19:16
I just come in on is not a
1:19:18
sauna hundred percent. it's not always late a
1:19:20
mouse gray that but if I sizes com
1:19:22
the hundred percent routed of like holy shit
1:19:24
you know like it meant something. The people
1:19:27
you're still mean something the people they wanna
1:19:29
talk about it. Yeah. I'd I
1:19:31
spent a long time and a lot of
1:19:33
energy and a lot of my life force
1:19:35
doing at wanna honor it and say okay
1:19:37
let's we can have that Yeah. You.
1:19:40
Know those Tom Cruise stories where people say show me
1:19:42
the money and he'll just say it right back to
1:19:44
them. right? I always take
1:19:46
such. I don't know.
1:19:49
I do find it inspiring that he's
1:19:51
not like c'mon man. You. Know
1:19:53
what he means like look, there's a way
1:19:55
to do that that say. That.
1:19:57
You're just kind of like hitting the ball back as the
1:19:59
quick. His way out. but I think
1:20:01
you're doing it in really like us.
1:20:04
We know I was cheering acquire kinda
1:20:06
suck at believe it that way. I
1:20:08
see. I think it's you and Travolta.
1:20:10
I'm like this person's actually found a
1:20:12
way and I'm not in in the
1:20:14
same sphere is you guys. But like
1:20:17
if someone if someone comes up to
1:20:19
me now. And. They say something and
1:20:21
that happens to me. You know, most
1:20:23
days one time someone will say something.
1:20:25
I really try to take a moment.
1:20:28
To. Look At them. And. Say that
1:20:30
makes my day. Never and
1:20:32
and convert it as I just saw
1:20:34
you do it into gratitude not a
1:20:36
bump of he go. And
1:20:39
blow. But. Like holy shit
1:20:41
man. life is hard life
1:20:44
as long, life is lonely
1:20:46
and like you aren't. Moulder.
1:20:49
And you don't care about you don't have
1:20:51
to prove it to that person in the
1:20:53
nets raid. who isn't it? A
1:20:55
I'd this what I'm hearing you say is
1:20:58
that kind A magical and lovely that we
1:21:00
had any exchange. Were here on a planet
1:21:02
together. And that meant something to you
1:21:04
and that that I think the best thing
1:21:06
you can get from that. His. Gratitude
1:21:09
And that's that's what I heard he said. Yeah.
1:21:12
And I run into it like. If.
1:21:15
I if I'm signing books or
1:21:17
if I'm playing music, you know,
1:21:19
M. M. P. I
1:21:22
don't for myself, that. People.
1:21:24
Are interested in the at least at first
1:21:26
and my books or my music because they
1:21:28
they know me as an actor they'll want
1:21:31
me to. A
1:21:34
guy I will get prickly like if they
1:21:36
want me to sign this book of it
1:21:38
was created our californication called the of Unforgettable
1:21:40
as of take novel written by Hank Moody
1:21:42
and co op me to sign it and
1:21:44
and I'll get i'll get a little like
1:21:46
but I didn't write it I'm not sure.
1:21:48
I do. You know what's going on here
1:21:50
Like I've never read it? I don't. I don't
1:21:53
know what it is. I'm signing. that's your Larry
1:21:55
Bird who is a doctor. Jay restrict their
1:21:57
joke in each other on the Korea and
1:21:59
Larry won't. That that's your chokehold on
1:22:01
everyone's I know there's a lot of
1:22:03
things that people have a boundary and
1:22:05
I know therapist, but unlike specified boundary
1:22:08
auto added I didn't write it so
1:22:10
I don't I am. I won't sign
1:22:12
somebody elses book either like an Iguana
1:22:14
when I sign something else has been
1:22:16
staff and them. I.
1:22:19
Do. It. So
1:22:21
hard to even break even as
1:22:23
a music act when you're touring
1:22:25
these days, post covert and with
1:22:27
gas prices up, it's really difficult
1:22:29
time to. As
1:22:32
I say and I I just. Would.
1:22:34
Like to break even and so. What
1:22:37
I have to decrease like meet and greets
1:22:39
before. A concert. In.
1:22:41
A mirror. I will sign
1:22:43
and take a picture. And
1:22:46
this is how. I'm not
1:22:48
making money the Zoe breakeven and otherwise
1:22:50
forget it. Isn't the thirty Seconds
1:22:53
to Mars Strategy and sake? it's a
1:22:55
Jay Leno mean great. Anaconda.
1:22:57
I'm not putting down either Arab, your
1:22:59
me or his music. Obviously I'm not
1:23:01
op but to be fair, I mean.
1:23:05
Teeth. I have their big bands wow it
1:23:07
or don't mean greats Of course like bats.
1:23:10
it's it's it's hard out there it is.
1:23:12
Art of This. Know when I see Weezer
1:23:14
sharing a bell with Green Day? My.
1:23:16
First thought is. My. Actually
1:23:18
my first thought is that sounds really fun and
1:23:20
I ll I'm glad they're they're getting to do
1:23:23
it together and the and then someone else was
1:23:25
like it's cuz even big bands like won't sell
1:23:27
out a stay home anymore. But. Like
1:23:29
huge like already rang the bell, already done.
1:23:31
There are a trophy and it's like so
1:23:34
they they pair them up and you don't
1:23:36
have to tell me about selling tickets. I
1:23:38
know exactly how thick of it's own Some
1:23:40
of us are do these mean rates and
1:23:43
people? Have. Spent. Money.
1:23:46
And. Now they want a picture ml
1:23:48
sometimes go on the director in other
1:23:50
be like. In: can we
1:23:52
go back to back? Like with guns, you know,
1:23:54
and stuff like that. Other: Yes, you act like
1:23:57
you're scared of an alien amazon like that and
1:23:59
you know, Can. I.
1:24:01
Get. Early on a yeah yeah yeah
1:24:04
yeah maybe or not. but you
1:24:06
know what it leads year Priscilla:
1:24:08
look at my big dumb open
1:24:10
goofy face. I feel like a
1:24:12
nice splat. Details: me know. Is.
1:24:14
Still kind of allen. As. I've
1:24:17
said like no thanks, no
1:24:19
thanks, but I I'm like
1:24:21
no thanks. Yeah. I
1:24:23
I I I would Only here's
1:24:25
here's a outta your quickly. Yeah.
1:24:28
Ice I hear or
1:24:30
this guy comes. For
1:24:33
me, angry. And he's got. A
1:24:36
little horse. Like. From Californication.
1:24:38
And he's got a tiny little hammer
1:24:41
and he wants me to. Break.
1:24:43
The Headlight because the in the show. I
1:24:45
always had a broken headline on reports for
1:24:48
this fight and that's totally fine. You know
1:24:50
what I thought of this is kind of
1:24:52
people do at these mangers as in other
1:24:54
And then I realize you know I'm playing.
1:24:57
In. In Eastern Europe and and in
1:25:00
countries where. I've not been,
1:25:02
they haven't seen me ever and this is
1:25:04
the time. The. Know they've grown up
1:25:06
with my shows or whatever and. It's
1:25:08
kind of a it's a moment in
1:25:11
I'm like I know that I'm tired
1:25:13
or I gotta show to do later.
1:25:15
but fuck me I should show up
1:25:17
and be grateful for that. And
1:25:20
that gets back to the addition think as
1:25:23
I was in a as in a twelve
1:25:25
step meetings and the. I. Had to
1:25:27
go the golden globes and it was right after. All.
1:25:30
That notoriety. About.
1:25:33
Gonna way to rehab and are scared
1:25:35
of the red carpet as i I
1:25:37
didn't want people ask me questions I
1:25:40
do and and. Because
1:25:42
I didn't know what to say. Here. And
1:25:45
certainly wasn't any their business and
1:25:47
my kids were young and my
1:25:49
that mile mile my wife was
1:25:51
was hurting in arms like i'm
1:25:53
not that. I. Can
1:25:55
do a five second something?
1:25:58
I as a blurb. Whatever.
1:26:01
I don't have a book modern Eminem. I'm in the
1:26:03
middle of it. And what's going
1:26:05
on? Bomb exploded. I'm sandy and
1:26:07
rubble and how? You're asking me
1:26:09
enough Soon as the rubble. As
1:26:12
a rebel done who just you rebels
1:26:15
must still smoke and. So.
1:26:20
I was gonna complaining or just.
1:26:22
Expressing my confusion and as meaning bad for
1:26:24
I don't know I don't know how to
1:26:26
be as I I knew how to be
1:26:28
before That. I knew how to. I.
1:26:31
Knew how to do the thing. I knew how
1:26:33
to do the carpet. I knew how to make
1:26:35
a joke. I. Knew how to be
1:26:38
easy and of how to be winning. I
1:26:40
knew I had a do it and all
1:26:42
the sudden I did not do it and.
1:26:45
This. Guy goes. Why?
1:26:47
You just be grateful a are there. Was
1:26:51
like. Room. I
1:26:55
try that. And were
1:26:57
tried gratitude for. I'm.
1:27:00
So. What I did was as like okay,
1:27:03
And that's my master plan. It's it's
1:27:05
all I'm going to do. Like.
1:27:08
I'm only going to be grateful. So.
1:27:12
I get like energy, Him a teenager
1:27:14
maneuvers in one of those silly shells
1:27:16
and. Say. Hello David
1:27:19
Such year Tessier? hum yeah.
1:27:21
as as a as a
1:27:23
family. has an has
1:27:25
as as term effects. And
1:27:28
I and I go. Hey,
1:27:31
thank you for asking. I'm really.
1:27:33
it's really nice that you care.
1:27:36
And I I really appreciate your concern.
1:27:38
It's not something I'm talking about right
1:27:41
now, but I really am. I'm
1:27:43
really so thankful that you. The.
1:27:45
To ask. And I watch
1:27:47
this guy's face go from like. A
1:27:50
my poking a bear to I'm
1:27:52
a really good person I'm an
1:27:55
excellent person what you did find
1:27:57
that fun fitness as debate type
1:27:59
freeze. You. Find A by the vulgar I
1:28:01
just i just gratitude and him. And
1:28:04
the buzzer there was also true. You.
1:28:07
Know in a perverse way. There.
1:28:09
Was care. Ah didn't
1:28:11
you found the care yet that
1:28:13
I love the shared that and
1:28:15
that strategy. A brief framing,
1:28:18
Even something that is. And.
1:28:20
A task. Yeah, right. It's worse
1:28:22
than intrusive. It it it's it's you know
1:28:24
they're looking for. Rent. Money.
1:28:27
Blood for money. And like
1:28:29
this old, more eyeballs, more adds more
1:28:32
may. Run. Off your hurt.
1:28:35
But. To to. Find. What's
1:28:37
behind? I guess the humanity behind it.
1:28:40
And if you're a this what you
1:28:42
did you imposed humanity. yeah you boost
1:28:44
their humanity back into the and you
1:28:46
can always do that. And can
1:28:48
always do that in any situation and
1:28:50
I think. It's good for
1:28:52
me to remind myself that it's an
1:28:54
option. He. As far as a good
1:28:56
is always a good awesome. I completely
1:28:59
agree. I don't think I've ever gone to
1:29:01
shit. I wish I had spit some fucking
1:29:03
traits of know and they say you can't
1:29:05
feel afraid and grateful at the same time.
1:29:07
You know it's funny with that. What's.
1:29:10
Next disease that we all have. I
1:29:12
think all. Maybe. I'll people I
1:29:14
don't know, but certainly our creative that I know.
1:29:17
I kind of thinking about the next thing. And
1:29:19
one of things speed gratitude that I do in the
1:29:22
mornings at Gratitude Practice where you. Think.
1:29:24
Of three moments for one minute each from your
1:29:26
life that you can be grateful for. Him and
1:29:28
as bad as to me, it's better than writing
1:29:30
it down. He put on some music and you
1:29:32
just do it. And here's the hope
1:29:34
that I'm trying to share with you: didn't even
1:29:36
if you weren't enjoying it when you did, it.
1:29:39
Which. Is certainly the case for me when I was
1:29:41
on the head of shows I made You can go
1:29:43
back and relive it. Yeah. From this
1:29:45
perspective and go like oh my god,
1:29:47
it's you and and you're doing californication
1:29:49
her on a week. He doesn't even
1:29:51
have to be a big moment. in
1:29:53
fact, it often isn't. It's not like
1:29:55
I nailed that. take did that big
1:29:57
moment are there was a big star.
1:30:00
Who cares, you were just there
1:30:02
that wasn't funny as many players
1:30:04
like if if I'm watching. By.
1:30:07
Mistake. I don't do it on purpose if I
1:30:09
if I'm flipping channels and I I. See
1:30:12
Exiles come on. Usually x was
1:30:14
cause. Californication doesn't
1:30:17
really play like I fall says, but.
1:30:20
Ever ever show or come on.
1:30:23
That. I don't remember shooting, but I'll
1:30:26
remember what I had for lunch
1:30:28
that day and said or you
1:30:30
know I'll remember that week. I.
1:30:32
Don't remember the plot I care act Now I
1:30:34
can handle I memorized those lines. I don't remember
1:30:37
those those lines of just foreign to me. As
1:30:40
have like little slices of just human
1:30:42
laughter connections friends that as I am
1:30:45
our with what I was doing around
1:30:47
that time in my life. And
1:30:50
even very specifically, almost to that
1:30:52
episode that I don't remember, but
1:30:54
I remember shooting. And human
1:30:56
as you say in the process of it
1:30:58
and he talks about like what what next
1:31:00
there's a more whatever you call it was
1:31:03
next isn't when as is that you are
1:31:05
you gonna. I heard
1:31:07
you call a on your vanity fair thing. Either
1:31:09
gay guy have some code was an
1:31:11
art I'm sorry my the great I'm
1:31:14
grateful for than sit. I.
1:31:16
I I would say that. I
1:31:21
don't have the ice, I still have
1:31:23
a little bit, but I'm really. Aware
1:31:26
that the only thing that.
1:31:29
That's deeply as the process you know
1:31:31
I got. Be proud of the finished
1:31:33
product. Sure that's a nice feeling but.
1:31:37
The process of the all the.
1:31:39
In. We're all just try to make of
1:31:41
the shower, the movie, the whatever. Together
1:31:43
we're just doing our best trying to
1:31:45
do this thing and there's something beautiful
1:31:47
about that process and the slow some
1:31:49
time so well is. there was one
1:31:51
saying that just felt like I was
1:31:54
from god in a like a for
1:31:56
like gods. A slight was with me.
1:32:00
Yes, I'm sorry. Keep going. Yeah.
1:32:03
That's it and so says really. This.
1:32:05
Really? disturb? I guess it's
1:32:08
almost a cliche now, but as really, Embracing.
1:32:11
That the all of life's his
1:32:13
business process and not And that
1:32:15
results. I completely agree And that's
1:32:17
what I couldn't wait to tell you. It's.
1:32:20
Written On a lot of things are written on
1:32:22
my merit. One of them is everything is an
1:32:24
excuse to love which has a cliche but. When.
1:32:27
Know doesn't doesn't So many present. I'm glad
1:32:29
I'm worried that the word love is ruined.
1:32:32
Loved. Me as the recognition that you
1:32:34
and I have it a shared being that
1:32:36
in our essence where exactly the same and
1:32:38
when human beings struggle in the same direction.
1:32:41
Or there's there's great stories of that. Great
1:32:43
in every way. But in a world where
1:32:45
to London is being bombed and if you
1:32:47
interview the people that live there at that time
1:32:49
they were like right now. What?
1:32:51
That meant London right now. Are you really.
1:32:54
That. We know you go and see that the roundabouts
1:32:56
with the lions and they're still holds it up. You
1:32:58
know you see Obama to drop. The.
1:33:00
People at that time said it was
1:33:02
the happiest time of their life and
1:33:04
when they look at that psychologically to
1:33:06
like human beings struggling in the same
1:33:09
direction or. Reach a level
1:33:11
of filament that nothing else can do
1:33:13
and I know it's it's crazy. Look
1:33:15
out weight. Or. Like him that
1:33:18
to a lot of things not just
1:33:20
acting, but any project. It could
1:33:22
be at a high school project. in a
1:33:24
science project. it doesn't matter how how fleet
1:33:26
of are dividing through government. Was.
1:33:28
At Good Waiting For Government. That's exactly what Waiting
1:33:31
for Government is about The as you have a
1:33:33
lot of that they have the love. That's.
1:33:35
Right? An elite did for or best
1:33:37
and so all his movies are about.
1:33:40
And you did Larry Sanders and
1:33:42
and Gary. When he
1:33:44
gets handling. when he did the pot at I
1:33:46
had heard him say before though he said that
1:33:48
show was about people who love each other. but
1:33:50
show business gets in the way and I would
1:33:52
go farther and say. This. Podcast
1:33:54
is an excuse to love each
1:33:56
other. This this this day, the
1:33:58
every moment is. An excuse. To.
1:34:02
Find. Some connection and that's
1:34:04
what. So offensive. When. We
1:34:06
blow that and actually make more.
1:34:09
A dry summers are or whatever
1:34:11
more division. We're. I.
1:34:13
Like the phrase i like the like excuse
1:34:16
in the phrase that's what I that's why
1:34:18
I suffer because of that surprises me Yes
1:34:20
us with makes it not a cliche. The
1:34:22
me. Oh I'm so glad. Yeah, no
1:34:24
it's it's like. That's what we're
1:34:27
saying about performing to it's it's an excuse.
1:34:29
To hang out in this energy you thought
1:34:32
you can be here. My new material were
1:34:34
actually trying to create a little a little
1:34:36
bubble together fine. Let's you
1:34:38
mentioned at the top we always on the
1:34:40
show by talking little bit about spirituality. I'm
1:34:43
getting the sense that you you're interested in
1:34:45
that and have some take on it so
1:34:47
I couldn't be more interested As I'll I'll
1:34:49
say what if there have been things that
1:34:52
you've found. Ah, wait a minute.
1:34:54
You are kind of like a Richard Gere type.
1:34:56
Are you a buddhist? The. Was
1:34:59
you know my young my name
1:35:01
means to have new means spiritual.
1:35:03
Really? Actually means dose
1:35:05
and his spirit or ghost.
1:35:08
Or teacher or rabbi is my grandmother
1:35:10
was her. And
1:35:13
of new as like her
1:35:15
as Teibel ending like spiritual
1:35:17
or ghostlike or Rabbi Our
1:35:20
while. So it's right
1:35:22
there in your name. Is. A My name. I.
1:35:24
Can't hide from it. and I spurs
1:35:26
for yeah, I'm not. I'm not a.
1:35:29
Part. Of any group for or
1:35:32
or name's thing but that
1:35:34
that's it's all we've been
1:35:36
talking about. I agree. That's
1:35:39
that's all we've been talking about. And
1:35:41
that's when you when you talk about love. That.
1:35:45
That's the sentiment them for gone. I
1:35:47
mean that's the most these synonym for
1:35:49
guy god is love minutes the same
1:35:52
thing and it's or. You. Know
1:35:54
the buddhist have a really interesting. Relationship.
1:35:56
To A because. The you
1:35:58
know. Attachment and detachment.
1:36:01
How can you. How
1:36:03
can you be attached to something? Was
1:36:06
gonna die so painful. That's why lights
1:36:08
are suffering. That's why they acknowledge that
1:36:10
and the first noble truth. Lies are
1:36:13
suffering. while because there were these infinite
1:36:15
beings doomed to a finite existence. Very
1:36:17
painful, very heartbreaking. Think about it too
1:36:19
much, which he do on some level
1:36:22
all the time. And
1:36:25
them. So. Says constant
1:36:27
struggle between attachment, a detachment
1:36:29
and. Was acting
1:36:31
and was making art. You can
1:36:34
attach so intensely to something. And.
1:36:37
You know you're going to detach eventually.
1:36:40
You know you know the truth,
1:36:42
that it's just that, a fleeting
1:36:44
attachment to this job, or this
1:36:46
joker, this book, or the song,
1:36:48
or this performance. But.
1:36:50
The beauty of it is is really
1:36:52
attaching to it. Even so even some.
1:36:55
Is so you go into the flow and you give
1:36:57
yourself up to it. Even so
1:36:59
you you know it can break your heart
1:37:01
when you have to leave. it was detached
1:37:04
from and so unless you risk lab. Here
1:37:06
as way we love underdogs, choices
1:37:08
were all essentially underdogs. It's it's
1:37:11
it's maybe not Hires What buggy
1:37:13
fucking Dennis about when he says
1:37:15
you know. I. Got scared of
1:37:17
losing you and I couldn't attach again. Because
1:37:20
I I realize that being attached to
1:37:22
use too painful yeah that it would
1:37:24
kill me. If. You done? Yet
1:37:27
and. That's it. We're like that to. you
1:37:29
know where we have to. We.
1:37:31
Have to mature past that point where
1:37:33
were too scared to attach in him.
1:37:36
Cause. There's going to be painful. I
1:37:38
agree. I've actually had moments. I don't know
1:37:40
if I can articulate it now. But.
1:37:42
I've had moments is interconnected
1:37:45
ceiling. Like of the like out. A
1:37:47
piss in moment where I'm like oh my god
1:37:49
I ketamine as ketamine isn't Well, yes, it might
1:37:51
have to. This one wasn't ketamine, but it's similar
1:37:53
to ketamine. And and when it happens and you
1:37:55
just in the back of a car, that's where
1:37:57
I was. I was I, I, I was being.
1:38:00
In somewhere and who just looking out
1:38:02
the window and I thought like oh
1:38:04
my god the most hate filled people
1:38:06
are are too scared to love If
1:38:09
there's a group that's being murdered or
1:38:11
or oppressed. You.
1:38:13
Other them and it's horrible And then
1:38:15
I was like, but really and underneath
1:38:17
that like you're on the red carpet,
1:38:20
there's love. There's a secret love that
1:38:22
it's too painful for you to risk.
1:38:24
That's my brother. Not or
1:38:26
one level further. that's me.
1:38:29
And. Then not that's not another, so
1:38:31
is yours shadow. Was. That
1:38:33
was my shadow. That's that's the music.
1:38:35
but I bet I'm not going to
1:38:37
face or that I wish. oh. That's
1:38:40
right. and and then is. It is what
1:38:42
you give him another name, you make all
1:38:44
these excuses a different story, and then it's
1:38:46
okay that they're dying or it. Where they're
1:38:49
being oppressed to do this or that. And
1:38:51
and Rhonda talks about how costly it is
1:38:53
to love A He says the whole point
1:38:55
is to keep your heart open in hell
1:38:57
and I that a very interesting idea and
1:38:59
that sort of what we're here to do.
1:39:01
You could bring Jesus intuit. It's like look
1:39:03
at what they did to Jesus and the
1:39:06
whole thing is keeping his heart open in
1:39:08
Hell is. Again, richard
1:39:10
worse is the first forgiveness. We talk
1:39:12
about the forgiveness of Christianity because the
1:39:14
first forgiveness is to forgive reality. Isn't.
1:39:17
It is is to forget. Just look
1:39:19
at the nightmare. The. And
1:39:21
then to find your. You.
1:39:23
Could say your true self in the midst of
1:39:25
that nightmare. Because of the nightmare, you might find
1:39:28
your true self. How. Do you think
1:39:30
Jesus gathers apps? I
1:39:32
mean carpentry was actually different. back to
1:39:34
as as the manual labor yeah like
1:39:36
or a lab hammer. I had a
1:39:38
youth faster that was like it was
1:39:40
more like iron work because he wanted
1:39:42
to make the secular as a car
1:39:45
a buddy. His era flashdance is
1:39:47
like a welder. I mean Sexy Jesus.
1:39:49
We all have to make our peace
1:39:51
with Sexy Jesus. It
1:39:53
brings people into the Jews. Are you kidding? I
1:39:55
give the people with a lot. As
1:39:58
Rock and Roll, I mean that over. I
1:40:00
love the little different and rock and roll they
1:40:02
have. They. Have electric music. They
1:40:04
have the organ that was that without
1:40:06
arctic. And when you're absolutely right,
1:40:09
few imagine being a just a regular person.
1:40:12
You've never heard of I Am Electric
1:40:14
guitar. You've never heard of. Big drum
1:40:16
set. You walk into a church and
1:40:18
they hit you with that organ. Yeah,
1:40:20
See god. That's right. That's. right?
1:40:22
They hit you with the organ they they. Blow.
1:40:24
Incense and your face? Yeah, big if little
1:40:27
wine to give a little snacks. Yeah,
1:40:29
of course you're gonna come back. And
1:40:31
if you read the Immortality key by
1:40:33
my pal Bryan Murray rescue the it
1:40:35
is hinting that the wind might have
1:40:37
been a little. Back. In the deck.
1:40:40
While. He was gonna get him a rigid. The
1:40:42
original you chris might have been like ketamine, might have
1:40:44
been like a really low dose. That. He.
1:40:47
Thought he makes a very deeply academic
1:40:49
by has ever done the psychedelic in
1:40:51
his life. He's and I say this
1:40:53
with all love and respect keys exactly
1:40:55
who you want to read. this book
1:40:57
is is pretty square yeah and he's
1:41:00
like a real i've been the any
1:41:02
jones and he's like there's a Dionysian
1:41:04
the name going on here and anybody
1:41:06
that read the New Testament at that
1:41:08
time would have known they were talking
1:41:11
about Psychedelic Arrow It. L
1:41:13
uses the Greek the the continuation
1:41:15
of these in L a liaison.
1:41:17
Yeah, yeah, the and a bit.
1:41:19
I don't worry that. The.
1:41:21
New done psychedelic. Ah,
1:41:24
Yeah, I haven't done the new, the haven't
1:41:26
done the ketamine. I'm into law school but
1:41:28
it back. I'm a dad and my. I.
1:41:31
Tripped yeah there was that impacted that
1:41:33
have an impact is a leading question
1:41:35
or curious if it informed your spot,
1:41:38
how you you get that knowledge in
1:41:40
a bigger than ours that we're all
1:41:42
one and that I remember specifically. I
1:41:45
was tripping of my buddy. And.
1:41:48
Were. Walking down a year and a New York
1:41:50
and know where. Yeah
1:41:53
and. I
1:41:55
started like responding to other people's
1:41:57
conversations because I was convinced that
1:41:59
were. The only one conversation you
1:42:01
know? That
1:42:04
that is psychedelic in L A One
1:42:07
time That's exactly what a down the
1:42:09
walls came down I realized we were
1:42:11
just talking. Everybody was talking
1:42:13
to each other you know it's it was
1:42:15
so loud I could just to just like
1:42:17
chattering monkeys. the mahjong we were just in
1:42:19
an enchanting says we're terrified and we swam
1:42:21
to keep each other company when I was
1:42:23
gonna die or get hurt and I was
1:42:25
the site oh and was talk to you
1:42:27
for minimum and all I heard a word
1:42:29
over here. I won't respond to him and
1:42:31
it's true. Embarrassing. But.
1:42:34
I'm. You. Know just holding
1:42:37
onto those revelations of the hard
1:42:39
part. That's right, Leaving.
1:42:41
Church, But keeping church in your heart? Yeah
1:42:43
as that. that's all game. He reminded me
1:42:45
I was in Amsterdam and I took some
1:42:47
mushrooms and there were these. Is there a
1:42:49
funny or language to hear other than Dutch
1:42:51
when you can happening? I was so funny
1:42:53
to me and these two young women were
1:42:55
having a picnic. And. I was lying
1:42:57
on the grass next to them and they're
1:42:59
gonna. You know I'm not going to do
1:43:02
an impression of Dutch, but they're having the
1:43:04
sort of nobody dumber you don't want uncommon
1:43:06
for you you know, not the dots ah
1:43:08
Christmas about getting taken down sit with great
1:43:10
silly that's attempt but it it sounded very
1:43:12
funny to me to the i was like
1:43:14
wow there's another language had so crazy because
1:43:16
separation seems so funny. And
1:43:18
their unpacking their lunch and I and I remember
1:43:20
thinking these women have no idea that I'm at
1:43:23
the bottom of their cooler like it's mean. They're.
1:43:25
Gonna, they're moving the bagels and the bananas and
1:43:27
they're going to buy me laying in the bottom
1:43:29
of the cool acts. And even though
1:43:32
that's absurd, It. Was like I
1:43:34
am your lunch and I am you
1:43:36
and I'm your language and and allergies
1:43:38
if I am them body in the
1:43:41
blood exactly years what you were Jesus.
1:43:43
There's. A great reminder Maharishi quote where he's dying
1:43:45
and they and I think about all the time
1:43:48
and they go don't Leave Us has devote either
1:43:50
like don't Leave Us and he says. Don't.
1:43:52
Be silly, where could I
1:43:54
go? And that's exactly. I
1:43:57
don't think you'll find a more
1:43:59
refined summation that were. Were
1:44:02
like no, I. Don't know the
1:44:04
i there's a chance is my be interesting to you but
1:44:06
i think the whole thing is. When.
1:44:08
You have a saw it. And. Then
1:44:10
it goes away. From
1:44:13
where did a common? Where did it go and
1:44:15
you notice that there's a consistent. Sealed.
1:44:18
Like the screen and a movie this is
1:44:20
reports parents Things appear on the screen and
1:44:22
then they disappear but what remained was the
1:44:25
screen and he and he would say we
1:44:27
are like conscious. Screams.
1:44:29
Watching ourselves and that's
1:44:31
great fine fun thought
1:44:34
experiment. But. When you're having that
1:44:36
hard day. You or your on
1:44:38
a long road trip and you're bored
1:44:40
and you start going like let Six,
1:44:42
Let's experience really investigative that's real. I
1:44:46
don't think there's a better game in town
1:44:48
than to just step away from David and
1:44:50
step in to the the original name of
1:44:52
God I am? Just what do you mean
1:44:54
when you say I. Read. I.
1:44:57
I've had experience. With.
1:45:00
Writing songs Just like I know that there's
1:45:02
a song in this room right now. I'm
1:45:04
going to be too lazy to go. right?
1:45:07
It. And knock the pick up my
1:45:09
guitar right it. But I know every time I
1:45:11
pick up my guitar Ike I can open myself
1:45:13
up to a song and was can be different.
1:45:16
If I tried to day or if I tried
1:45:18
tomorrow laugh. And. He
1:45:21
now I'm not. I'm not make any great friends
1:45:23
from my songs that are coming from God or
1:45:26
whatever, but they are coming from a moment in
1:45:28
a while. Is. Not ever going to
1:45:30
exist again. And. What else? What a
1:45:32
good name for. Got a moment that some getting. This
1:45:34
is Abby like that. This reminds me of the Joan
1:45:36
of Arc what they say. You. Say you
1:45:38
talk to God. You talk
1:45:40
to him in your head. And Joan
1:45:43
of Arc said, where else would
1:45:45
I talk to him And that's
1:45:47
a person to me that understands
1:45:49
the shared nature of consciousness. Meaning,
1:45:51
there's only one I am. There's.
1:45:53
Only one. There's.
1:45:55
Only one light. And.
1:45:57
Were us some? As you know when
1:45:59
somebody. Some some adar dog died
1:46:01
and I'm explaining to my daughter's like it's
1:46:03
like the ocean is the great life and
1:46:06
Rodgers cups of water and then you pour
1:46:08
it back world or is an image that
1:46:10
I actually did have on ketamine was an
1:46:12
octopus and he's doing a puppet show from
1:46:15
cells. But here's the key. He's
1:46:17
a joyful octopus. Sure, I
1:46:20
linked. It's. For his you
1:46:22
said we chatter. You know how science
1:46:24
doesn't know why birds do the pre
1:46:26
dawn chorus. Like. A I like
1:46:28
getting up early in the morning and I hear the
1:46:30
birds certainly to chirp to brands gonna come up and
1:46:32
they thought it was mating. It turns out is not
1:46:34
mating. There's no reason for it. and I was like.
1:46:37
Or. It's the same fuck him thing
1:46:39
we chirp because we're here. Is
1:46:42
being grateful. Guess. And
1:46:44
I'm just letting you know. Damn. Hear.
1:46:47
You. I love when he said we've been talking
1:46:49
about got all time because that's exactly what this.
1:46:51
What? What I'm going for in my life. As
1:46:53
we don't have to talk about these things directly,
1:46:56
we don't have to say i love you I
1:46:58
see you at it is wonderful to share this
1:47:00
moment with you that says what's happening with thing
1:47:02
before the the sun comes up because. What's.
1:47:05
The Alternative. And
1:47:08
I get some. Get all out Now I'm very
1:47:10
clearly you don't have any peacocks and and I
1:47:13
wrote because you'd want to kill them You want
1:47:15
a on know peacocks. Know. Peacocks,
1:47:17
why are you in London and and will
1:47:19
get ya to are you? But you're not
1:47:21
Amazon show called Malice or another two weeks
1:47:23
here and then I'm actually gonna go to
1:47:25
Greece to finish it up and I've never
1:47:27
been. agree summer with him for that. I
1:47:29
that's the cradle of a western civilization and
1:47:31
I couldn't be happier to go check it
1:47:33
out for the first time in my life.
1:47:35
It be a great time to read them
1:47:37
of the immortality key. is it? It would
1:47:39
be an hour break. Bryan. Burrough
1:47:41
Rescue the of Immortality care of it.
1:47:44
Can and you'll be able to go. It
1:47:47
says if you die before you die you won't
1:47:49
die when you die is is the whole thing
1:47:51
and you could go to the temple where they
1:47:53
where it says that A Now let me ask
1:47:56
you that couple times there's been a thumbs up
1:47:58
on the screen. Yeah that's a mistake. oh
1:48:01
that is it is ill them along. With
1:48:04
a zoom thing I thought it was Robin
1:48:06
being like I love that was Robin Leventhal
1:48:08
as far as Rise and Bravo him. And
1:48:10
though it wasn't Robinette because here's what I
1:48:12
thought it's only happening when Pete stalking and
1:48:15
will make it so much while do a
1:48:17
thumbs up. Yeah.
1:48:20
That back it up a little bit. Get it in frames. Per.
1:48:24
I. Must be my settings. Don't
1:48:27
do that too much. As
1:48:29
a ah but let's let's let's get
1:48:31
you audio that the last question the
1:48:33
I love to ask. Arm.
1:48:36
And I really have enjoyed this very
1:48:38
very much. Thank you! I'm against my
1:48:40
my well. As a kid,
1:48:42
who did, you were coerced. That.
1:48:44
Coerce Assist. The
1:48:46
bug is hiding them. You know it's a
1:48:48
small movie there's there's no money behind. Been
1:48:51
a says to Psych. I've gotta go everywhere
1:48:53
I can go. And and yeah, And.
1:48:55
Talk and like. This is the form now and
1:48:57
it's intense. I'm India like you're good at what
1:49:00
you do and we have been tense conversation. It's
1:49:02
a lot. Yeah, It's not. It's
1:49:04
not Nine, it's not not. Then my my
1:49:06
aim is to sell my movie. I want
1:49:08
people to see. That's what I want more
1:49:11
than anything. Rash cup as kind of bullshit
1:49:13
because we're just having a conversation. but underneath
1:49:15
it is like tribe do right by something
1:49:17
that I love as well. So yeah, we'll
1:49:20
split school, split know you're You're right to
1:49:22
call it out. It it is is it.
1:49:24
Now I know what's happening I suppose. but
1:49:27
for what it's worth, you seem like a
1:49:29
very self assured person. I said the move
1:49:31
is wonderful and I was very happy. For
1:49:33
you that it came together I really i
1:49:35
I did have one do you want to
1:49:38
a bucket and question was i was like
1:49:40
are you Danny? Are you the dad. Oh
1:49:44
ah. A More the
1:49:46
A More the Sun I'm actually I wrote it.
1:49:49
A while ago. Yeah. And
1:49:51
I was around for myself. Play the sun
1:49:53
on but then I just got too old
1:49:55
and I'm. And I never
1:49:58
thought about plan the Dad and the. There's
1:50:00
nothing like my Dad. I realized that as
1:50:02
were like my mom, I think I'm playing
1:50:04
my mom about. Wow.
1:50:06
Your. Back to you know, gender
1:50:09
swapping your federal right and
1:50:11
sister And here you are
1:50:13
why I. You. Can't.
1:50:16
What? Was your last question. Yeah. Sorry
1:50:18
I was is gonna cut up movie again. I did
1:50:20
that was wonderful and people should definitely go check it
1:50:22
out. My last question is can you think of a
1:50:24
time and your life when you laughed really really really
1:50:26
really hard? Oh God. And
1:50:28
it doesn't have to be a good story but of
1:50:31
tears streaming down your fate as a fine of the
1:50:33
ground. Maybe your kid. Maybe. Someone farted.
1:50:35
Maybe it's in a situation where you're not supposed to
1:50:37
laugh. It but I'll it's.
1:50:40
It's that part. same and the
1:50:42
movie. that stuff. no way. It
1:50:45
really is because a. Will. There's
1:50:47
two parts to it. When when
1:50:49
we were editing it might have this
1:50:51
wonderful writer named Jamie Nelson and she
1:50:53
was. She's such a genius and but
1:50:55
she was like I, you know. Part.
1:50:59
Since and I don't have full screen it you
1:51:01
know, but I feel like you're going to want
1:51:03
to connect. And.
1:51:05
And I was like a says because we haven't
1:51:07
found the right farts and now we've really got
1:51:10
because the far as aren't. They. Weren't
1:51:12
telling me out? Here and
1:51:14
cyber Tesla. And see
1:51:16
another Tesla! Our my daughter loves the
1:51:18
Fords right? So I'll cite my car
1:51:20
farce or really good. So we went
1:51:23
out with my phone. I recorded the
1:51:25
Tesla farts on my phone and we
1:51:27
put it in the movie and then
1:51:29
I cried and then we went to
1:51:31
we watch One was a D remember.
1:51:34
As a few him I, his it is.
1:51:36
A couple of those are the Tesla farts.
1:51:38
They're all Tesla farts. wealth. And
1:51:40
the. And ends
1:51:43
at. And we get to
1:51:45
