Prayer for Choosing to Believe God is Good

2:12

Romans 8, 28 And

2:15

we know that for those who love God, all

2:17

things work together for good, for those who are

2:19

called according to His purpose. An

2:22

absolute bundle of nervous energy, she sat

2:24

across from me in the small counseling

2:26

room trying to wrap her mind around

2:28

the positive pregnancy test confirmed on the

2:30

sheet of paper in front of her. Her

2:33

stress had everything to do with her stage

2:35

of life and the total and radical shifting

2:37

of priorities and plans a new baby meant.

2:40

Instead of the freedoms of retirement

2:42

calling her name, long sleepless nights,

2:44

pantrums, diapers, and the realities and

2:46

risks of being an older mom

2:48

now loomed in the not so

2:50

distant future, she'd been living

2:53

happily in one reality. And

2:55

now a new one inserted itself into her

2:57

life without permission, or so she thought.

3:00

I've never been a fan of, well, that

3:02

option, she said, but I just don't know

3:05

if I can do this again. What

3:07

if something's wrong with the baby? What

3:09

if it affects my health negatively? What

3:11

if having this baby makes it harder for me to

3:13

take care of the children I already have?

3:16

These were the questions plaguing her and

3:18

I understood completely. With only a

3:20

few years between us, I knew that

3:22

her fears would be my exact fears. What

3:24

if I were to find myself pregnant and

3:26

expecting a child in my mid forties? As

3:30

I listened to her rattle off statistics about all

3:32

of the things that could possibly go wrong, a

3:35

small question began to form in my mind. When

3:38

she paused to take a breath, I looked at

3:40

her and quietly asked it, do you

3:42

believe God is good? As a

3:44

professing Christian, she quickly said yes. But

3:47

then I asked her a follow up question. If

3:50

the very worst possible scenario were to

3:52

happen with this pregnancy, would you

3:54

still believe God is good and that his plans for

3:56

you are good? And then she began

3:58

to cry. Romans 8 28

4:01

is a familiar and beloved verse to Christians

4:03

around the world. Most of

4:05

us can quote it word for word and often

4:07

do, especially when things don't seem all that good.

4:10

I remind myself frequently that the words

4:13

all things really do mean all things.

4:16

God works the good, the bad, and the ugly

4:18

together for our good when we belong to Him.

4:20

But it isn't really the words all things that

4:23

I struggle with about this verse. No,

4:25

if I'm honest, I struggle with another

4:28

word entirely. Good. Most

4:30

of the time, I have to face the fact

4:32

that what I define as good may or may

4:35

not be what God defines as good. And

4:37

sometimes it takes what seems bad in the

4:40

moment to produce a greater good God wants

4:42

to work in my life for His glory.

4:45

Let's pray. Father, I believe

4:48

you're good and that your plans for me are good.

4:50

But in the heat of the moment, I

4:52

often confuse my definition of good with yours.

4:55

Help me to see the circumstances of my

4:57

life through the lens of your word and

5:00

to remember that I can trust you no matter

5:02

what comes my way. Make

5:04

me confident in your goodness so that I can

5:06

live in a way that others see you

5:08

in me. In Jesus name.

5:10

Amen. If you

6:21

you ever hear sayings make their way

6:24

through the culture and the church that

6:26

seem nice in theory but are actually

6:28

theologically problematic? My name is Shara

6:30

Donahue and I'm the host of The

6:33

Bible Never Said That, a podcast where

6:35

we examine these popular sayings under the

6:37

lens of biblical truth. We cover sayings

6:39

like God won't give you more than

6:41

you can handle, time heals all wounds,

6:43

and follow your heart. We also spend

6:45

time exploring how people use Bible verses

6:47

out of context. If you want to
